📖 A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin

“I have everything to gain, and everything to lose.”

I am not someone who stays up late, usually going to bed by 10pm every night, but I stayed up until 1am so that I could finish this book. It had me in a vice grip from the time I started it to the time I finished it. There were never any dull moments and I audibly gasped a couple of times while I was reading it.

Ning accidentally brews a cup of poison tea that kills her mother and makes her sister deathly sick. In a bid to save her sister, Ning travels to the capital city to compete in a magical tea-making competition, claiming that she is an official Shénnóng-tu, apprentice of a Shénnóng-shu.

Within the capital and this competition, there are lies, treachery, danger, and a mysterious boy who is hiding more than he seems. Will Ning be able to survive this and save her sister?

I cannot wait for the second book, A Venom Dark and Sweet, releasing in August 2022. I am totally taken by A Magic Steeped in Poison. I highly recommend it! There’s drama, intrigue, a strong character story, and lots of interesting side characters, plus commentary on the ruling class. Check it out!

I’m always on the hunt for a good New Adult novel, and with comparisons to Red, White & Royal Blue and Boyfriend Material, I was eager to dive into Never Been Kissed. Unfortunately, it failed to deliver.

SYNOPSIS

Wren Roland has never been kissed, but he wants that movie-perfect ending more than anything. Feeling nostalgic on the eve of his birthday, he sends emails to all the boys he (ahem) loved before he came out. Morning brings the inevitable Oh God What Did I Do?, but he brushes that panic aside. Why stress about it? None of his could-have-beens are actually going to read the emails, much less respond. Right?

Enter Derick Haverford, Wren’s number 1 pre-coming-out-crush and his drive-in theater’s new social media intern. Everyone claims he’s coasting on cinematic good looks and his father’s connections, but Wren has always known there’s much more to Derick than meets the eye. Too bad he doesn’t feel the same way about the infamous almost-kiss that once rocked Wren’s world.

Whatever. Wren’s no longer a closeted teenager; he can survive this. Often when trans women ask me when I'm performing next, and I tell them that it's a queer/trans event, they will tell me that they'd rather not go because they do not feel comfortable or safe in those spaces, that they have been dismissed or belittled at such events before. Even trans women who are dyke- or bisexual- identified often don't feel welcome or relevant in queer/trans spaces. And whenever a trans woman or ally points out aspects about the queer/ trans community that contribute to these feelings of irrelevancy and disrespect—such as the way our community coddles those who support trans-woman-exclusionist events or who make trans-misogynistic comments—we are described as being "divisive." This use of the word "divisive" is particularly telling, as it implies that "queer/trans" represents a uniform movement or community—a "oneness"—rather than an alliance where all voices are respected.

📖 The Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit

I have a fantastic love for dragon books, especially collections of short stories featuring our scaled friends (or enemies). Having had this book ever since high school, I finally picked it up, reading it aloud to my rabbit.

We had a grand time with our merry heroes, who were all youthful and young. Some of the stories definitely had some overshadowing of the times they were written (1899), in their depictions of “white and pale means good”.

I’d have to say my favorite story was “Uncle James, or the Purple Stranger”, in which two kids outwit their evil wizard uncle and defeat a dragon at the same time.

“Who?” Tim wasn’t the only one to startle, seeing as Bruce had practically froze, a downturn to his lips in a silent show of confusion. 

Damian scowled. “Are you deaf Drake? Grandmother is coming to Gotham to, quote, make sure I am being properly cared for.” None of them had known that Ras was with anyone actually. At least Tim was pretty sure that would have been in the files.
