I have this theory that we never get robin's real name bc the book is written in english. This can go two ways:
One, we start to follow Robin's story the moment he leaves China, so what we see is basically people trying to westsize him, we can see this by the fact that kuang keeps giving the emphasis to people saying "he looks english under certain lights", and is there a more english name than Robin Swift??? So we didn't get his name cause the moment he got it back, it was him returning to his roots, finding himself whole again and not half of two things that cannot coexist, therefore we, as english speakers, we're not invited to be a part of that. Bonus point that the only other non-western character he's close to never calls him Robin, but Birdie, and when Lettie tries to use it he feels weird, like it's wrong.
Two, the simple fact that it's written in english stops it. I study chinese and I can undoubtedly say that she couldn't just throw a name there with no explanation, she'd had to put the character, and then the 拼音, and then she'd have to translate it and explain it, and something would still get lost in translation. Choosing to give us his real name would totally break the narrative.
Anyway, be it one way or another, I think it's great

Fantasy Romance Recommendations Pt.1
I'm a big fan of Fantasy Romance books but I've noticed that a lot of recommendations lists have the same books over and over again. Nothing against Sarah J Maas, Jennifer Armentrout and Holly Black, but I have read their books already and I'm looking for new suggestions. And thus, I decided to make my own little list (with help from @housebaylor and @shirewalker). Maybe it will help someone somewhere. XD ***Some of the books listed here are not Romance novels officially but all have romance and have HFN or HEA endings Fantasy Romances The Fallen Empire Trilogy by Grace Draven The Kraelian Empire has ruled with an iron fist for centuries, its grip unyielding until the power of three women, and the men devoted to them, break it.
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden Vasya Petrovna is a young woman gifted with the Sight which allows her to see spirits who inhabits the world. The arrival of Christianity spells trouble for her and the world of the spirits at large. This story has her rebel against her fate as a woman in medieval Russia, go on a great adventure and meet amazing characters.  One of my favourite.
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher A subversive take on Fairytales! After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra―the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter―has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.  It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. Celia and Marco's beautiful story of challenges, love and magic. Beautiful haunting magic. Radiance by Grace Draven Two people brought together by the trappings of duty and politics will discover they are destined for each other, even as the powers of a hostile kingdom scheme to tear them apart. The Bird and The Sword by Amy Harmon Magic is forbidden and gifted people are sentenced to death. Lark, a voiceless young woman, has a gift she must keep hidden. The day her mother was killed, she told lark's father she wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if Lark's died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky. A Fate of Wrath and Flame by K.A. Tucker Portal Fantasy! Gifted thief Romeria is transported into another world into the body of a treacherous princess. Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom. Only read the first book so far Married to Magic Trilogy by Elise Kova Shared Universe, Fantasy Romance, Stand Alone Novels About Young Women and their Unexpected Romances with Magical Men Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer and everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects. Only read the first book Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them? If you like S.J.Maas you might like this YA Fantasy Romances Uprooted by Naomi Novik Agnieszka lives in a quiet village bordering a corrupted Wood. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik Multiple POVs fairytale Miryem gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk--grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh--Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. The Girl who fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh Mina's people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering. An Enchantment of Raven by Margaret Rogerson With a flick of her paintbrush, Isobel creates stunning portraits for a dangerous set of clients: the fair folk. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes, a weakness that could cost him his throne, and even his life. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson Elisabeth was raised in a magical library where dark magical grimoire are kept. She hopes to become a Warden whos job is protecting the Kingdom from their powers. Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. Shielded by Katlynn Flanders Hidden Princess, arranged marriage, yearning! A kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her. Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment - a condition which makes her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season - but when the strange, handsome and utterly uncouth Lord Sorcier discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into dangerous and peculiar faerie affairs. A Crown of Wishes by Rosha Chokshi Book 2 of a series. A captured princess and a wise prince team up and to win the Tournament of Wishes, a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor. ****Part 2: Urban Fantasy recs to follow.****

BOOKS BY MIEKO KAWAKAMI
Tumblr media
🍳 Breasts and Eggs Breasts & Eggs paints a portrait of contemporary womanhood in Japan and recounts the intimate journeys of three women as they confront oppressive mores and their own uncertainties on the road to finding peace and futures they can truly call their own. It tells the story of three women: the 30-year-old Natsu, her older sister, Makiko, and Makiko’s daughter, Midoriko. Makiko has traveled to Tokyo in search of an affordable breast enhancement procedure. She is accompanied by Midoriko, who has recently grown silent.
👁 Heaven Hailed as a bold foray into new literary territory, Kawakami’s novel is told in the voice of a 14-year-old student subjected to relentless torment for having a lazy eye. Instead of resisting, the boy chooses to suffer in complete resignation. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate who suffers similar treatment at the hands of her tormenters.
📓 All the Lovers in the Night Fuyuko Irie is a freelance copyeditor in her mid-thirties. Working and living alone in a city where it is not easy to form new relationships, she has little regular contact with anyone other than her editor, Hijiri, a woman of the same age but with a very different disposition. When Fuyoku stops one day on a Tokyo street and notices her reflection in a storefront window, what she sees is a drab, awkward, and spiritless woman who has lacked the strength to change her life and decides to do something about it.

Hii, dearest!
I've been reading some of your posts and analysis about the Darkling/ Darklina and I have to ask you, do you have any recomendatios of books with a vibe like them (or better, a vibe like want tbey could have been) but that won't make the reader revolted with the end?
Well, love your posts and thank you. Hope this find you well. ☺️
Hi and thanks!
I can’t think of books with similar vibe, but I can recommend those I’ve read to get rid of the bad aftertaste:
The Shadows between Us by Tricia Levenseller- different kind of shadow powers, not physically badass heroine, but ruthless and actually hungry for power, Slytherin romance; light reading for fun
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik- Slavic & Jewish inspiration, enemies to lovers (2×), badass ladies winning thanks to their wits and humanity; demands more attention from reader
The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black- he hates that he has feelings for her, originally abusive behaviour (They’re not in relationship at that point.), lies over lies, powercouple ruling the realm, truly outsider heroine, Jude would have Alina for breakfast- sunpowers or not; well-written YA, obsessed
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab- the embodiement of Darkness, toxic relationship, immortality, he ISN’T human at all, romance-wise- this is what LB would want us to see in Darklina if Alina had personality; almost a year later and I’m still not over it, beautiful, poetic
I hope you’ll like at least some of these.

Are there anymore books like the winternight trilogy? I've been in love with the winternight trilogy since I read it and now I want something similar lol. I'm obsessed.
Hey oh my gosh I literally just noticed this ask so sorry!
The FIRST thing I think of when I think of books like the winternight trilogy is definitely spinning silver or uprooted by Naomi novik, they’re similar to the extent I actually posted about that at one point, but still have a lot to enjoy on their own. They’ve got similar fairytale vibes and similar characters. Definitely check it out!
I also recommend City of Brass (the Daevabad trilogy) for a similar high fantasy rooted in history feel and awesome characters, or anything by Robin McKinley for a classic medieval fairytale vibe

October reading recap!! 1. Eleanor Oliphaunt is Perfectly Fine. 3.75/5. well-written novel following Eleanor as she struggles to make peace with a traumatic childhood and challenging relationship. 2. Brief Intervals Of Horrible Sanity. 3/5. School teacher attempts to lead a class in an experimental progressive school. Funny, but unfortunately unsatisfying. 3. No Parking At The End Times. 3/5. Abigail struggles to come to terms with her parents religious convictions and brother's rebellion.Interesting plot, but not followed through.
4. The Memory of Animals. 4.5/5. Easily one of the best dystopian novels l've read. It follows Neffy, a young marine biologist taking part in a vaccine trial during the deadliest pandemic the world has ever encountered.
5.Nimona. 4/5. Humorous graphic novel with surprisingly deep musings on government, relationships, and politics.
6. Butts: a Backstory. 4.80/5. Easily the best non-fiction I've read this year! An amusing examination on society's attitudes towards butts, and how it connects to feminism, racial politics, consumerism, and the human brain.
7. East of Eden by John Steinbeck. 5/5. Breathtaking and intense story inspired by the garden of Eden. 8. (not pictured) This Is How You Lose The Time War. 4.90/5. Intensely well-written sci-fi time traveling queer romance, told in the form of letters. I layed on the floor and sobbed after 😭
9. (not pictured) Generosities by Luci Shaw. 4/5. Beautiful poetry in the tone of Mary Oliver with a more pronounced Christian basis.
10. (not pictured) confessions of an alleged good girl. 4/5. A HAPPY QUEER CHRISTIAN SIDE CHARACTER HELLO?? amazing discussion of sex ed in the Christian church and the failings/successes. Highly reccomend!!
HAPPY READING!!!

@dragonanne I have finished The Killing Thought, and I have Many Thoughts
Guys, I HIGHLY recommend this book, it's so good
(Spoilers under the cut)
Lune is SO delightful to me. I love her pouch of throwing knives, and I love her snark, and I love her political skill. I also love how you showed her being upset about killing Zezri, that was a good addition! But stars, was that bit INTENSE!!
Kenneth seems like a darling, and so did Dake. I love them
Gardzrin is an EXCELLENT villain. I loved the epilogue, and how it showed his dynamic woth his siblings some more, y'know? He's very interesting and also I hate his guts
Gabryl, I still love SO much. I adored the part when he escorted Aril into the ball to keep her away from Gardzrin, it was so sweet
Speaking of loving, I ADORE Captain Torin and Lady Vaulus, they're so fun. I loved Lady Vaulus shipping Cam and Korthi, it delighted me. (Speaking of, I also highkey ship those two as well. Korthi and Cam, to clarify. Obviously I do not ship Torin and Lady Vaulus) Through the whole book, I kept having to be like, self, stop getting attached to these two, they could be TRAITORS. This did not go well, because I love them. Luckily, they didn't betray anyone, so we're good!!
Ugh, speaking of traitors, Lord Vazet??? How COULD he??? I KNEW he was suspicious, though, when he was all, I must, uhhhhh, go attend to something.... not traitor stuff I MEAN WHAT (Okay, he was actually a lot more subtle than that, I just noticed cause I was PARANOID, but I think I'm funny. So)
Matsen. I love him. So much. He's snarky, and loyal, and FASCINATING. I cannot WAIT to learn more about him!!
Your illustrations are GORGEOUS. The one of Cam holding Korthi when she was breaking down over Ferthe (FERTHE MY BELOVED HOW COULD YOU KILL HIMMMMMM) hit me RIGHT in the feels. So did the one of Gabryl hugging Lune. You evoke emotions QUITE well through your art! And I loves seeing those illustrations, because while they're not the exact same as my art by any means, they're similar enough that it gave me hope that I could illustrate a book someday!! So, y'know, thanks!!
To wrap it up, I ADORED this book. The characters were SO great, the plot was fascinating, and the world building was EXCELLENT!!!! I was utterly DELIGHTED by it!! 10/10, would and will recommend!!

I guess I'm a TikTok girlie now?? Anyway here's two of my all time favorites!! Neither are very romance heavy but relationships drive both plots and the dynamics between characters drive me insane (complimentary). They're also just so funny? Like, I actually honest to God laughed out loud?
They work as standalones but you absolutely have to read both; context from Swordspoint will leave you crying halfway through Privilege of the Sword at the line "I brought us some fish".
Alec is my darling, awful, limpwristed disaster man, and Richard is the sweetest patientest most autism-having utterly ruthless swordsman ever. I love Katherine too; her butchification is so important to me.

It's brilliant art if you reading a book where the protagonist is a ginger-blond beauty with a quick silver mind and a boyfriend with special needs:)
