Celebration World Book Night April 23, 2021

Reading is vital for a child 19s growth, but with all the hassles of adulthood, not many adults have the time to read. The factors present in why people don 19t read range from poverty to mental health.

It 19s important to read because of how it provides relief from the everyday world. Reading inspires people and educates people about the world around them.

However, not many people can see the benefits reading provides. World Book Night aims to change the way adults view reading by encouraging adults to take the time to read during the night with free books.

History of World Book Night

World Book Night began back in 2011 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, when Jamie Byng, MD of Canongate, conceived of the idea. It came to be after discussing it a year before with those present at Book Industry Conference. It created another way for adults to read more and since then, the holiday has become a success.

However, because World Book Day existed for children, World Book Night became a day for adults to read more books. In 2012, the holiday moved from March to April to coincide with UNESCO 19s International Day of the Book. In 2012 and 2013, the holiday was celebrated in the United States. Over 50,000 people gave books to others on this day.

In late 2013, World Book Night then became part of the Reading Agency; an organization focused on helping and encouraging others to read more books. Each year, books are given to people in hospitals, prisons, libraries, colleges, homeless shelters, and their communities.

The giveaway for these books has since helped bookstores sell more books and continue their businesses. Volunteers go around their local communities and give away books, encouraging others to read and grow in their knowledge of the world.

How to Celebrate World Book Night

Volunteer at your local reading library or bookstore to see about celebrating World Book Night and give away some free books.

Give books to those in a hospital, a care center, a homeless shelter, or a child day center. You can also take the time to read a book late into the night and relax. Start a library of your favorite collections of books and share those books with others.

Share this holiday with your friends and family and ask them what their favorite books are. Recommend your favorite books to others and share your love of reading with everyone.

Creative minds have led the way throughout all of histories innovations and growth. Through poetry and art, they challenge the idea of what 19s possible, and shine a spotlight on the society that birthed them. Poetry And The Creative Mind Day is set aside to honor the bright and glittering jewels that are the minds of these creative pioneers. Most of us are introduced to poetry and art at an early age, whether it 19s the nursery rhymes sung by our parents, or the combination of poetry and art in books like Dr. Suess and Shel Silverstein, the artist of Where the sidewalk ends.

Poetry and Creative Mind Day is a great time to dig up some of your favorite old poems and read them, or sing a favorite old nursery rhyme. If your talents lean more towards the physical mediums, you can take out your paints or pencils, or any other form of art you enjoy. If you 19ve never been the creative sort, Poetry and Creative Mind Day is a great day to pick up that opportunities.

There are so many great ways to celebrate it, including memorizing old poems, or writing your own. If you 19re the adventurous sort you can leave poetry in creative places today. You can leave snippets of poem on the inside of bathroom stalls on sticky notes, print them out and leave them on desks, drop inspirational poems in the collection bowls of the needy, or anywhere else. Poetry readings are another great way to celebrate, and are still a common sort of gathering of creative minds. If you can 19t find a poetry reading, you can certainly try to organize one.

There are many ideas regarding the poets role in society, as the compressed nature of information in poetry tends to directly reach into the subconscious of a people. It creates imagery and evokes memories and emotions of events going on in and around people. It has been said that 1Cwriting is where thought meets impulse 1D, allowing the conscious mind to communicate with the subconscious. It is the opinion of some that it becomes the responsibility of the poet to use this communication to reveal the truth to those unable to see it.

Poetry comes in many forms, from William Shakespeare 19s Iambic Pentameter, to the rigid structure of the Japanese Haiku, to the simple rhyming nature of children 19s nursery rhymes, poems can come in many different forms. Take for instance acrostic poetry, that form by which a word of a person 19s name is used to write poetry, using the letters of the first name to form the framework of the poem. If you 19ve ever seen poetry done in a particular shape, such as a rainbow or tree, you 19ve read examples of concrete poetry. And these are just a few of the hundreds of different types to be found throughout the world and its thousands of cultures.

For Poetry and Creative Mind Day, take your brain out, dust it off, and introduce it to the beauty of poetry again. Remember that we hear poetry every day, as every song on the radio is based off of a poem, called lyrics simply because they are placed to music. Poetry isn 19t just for High School English and Liberal Arts classes, it is a very powerful and real way to express our thoughts and emotions and share them with our fellow man, or just get them out onto paper. Celebration World Storytelling Day March 20, 2021

Once upon a time, a long time ago (well, actually, back in 1991 in Sweden), a Storytelling Day was held. The ethos behind this event caught on around the globe, and now we celebrate World Storytelling Day on an international level.

The aim of World Storytelling Day is to celebrate the art of oral storytelling, with as many people as possible around the world telling and listening to stories in their own languages on the same day. People taking part can link up with others around the globe who are also contributing 13 making it a truly international festival that creates new friends and promotes positive understanding of cultures around the world!

Celebration Small Press Month March 2021

Have you written a book or hope to? There are so many options for writers today that did not exist a few decades ago. Small Press Month celebrates this fact by shining a light on many of the great authors around the world. It celebrates not only the authors but the publishing houses as well. It takes courage and strength of spirit to stand up and publish in the face of the large publishers.

History of Small Press Month

Small Press Month began in 1996 when it was created by the New York City-based Small Press Center and the Publishers Marketing Association based in California. The goal was to highlight the smaller publishing companies and to encourage them in the fight against the traditional big publishing houses. It is also a time to put a spotlight on the authors that are being represented. Many small publishers are standing up to the status quo and working with authors that the traditional publishers have chosen to reject.

In 1999 there was a survey done by the Book Industry Study Group that surprised people with its conclusions. It stated that at that time, fifty thousand small publishers accounted for $14.3 billion that year in sales! Independent publishers have only grown since then so today the figures would be larger. It can be difficult for the small press to get their product on the shelves when they need to go up against the larger companies.

How to Celebrate Small Press Month

Celebrating Small Press Month is important to keep ideas and information flowing from these independent sources. Many libraries and bookstores will have displays or sections devoted to highlighting them. If there is one of the small publishing houses in your community, they may even be hosting an event to bring awareness to their authors. It is common for book fairs to spring up to support these offerings as well. If you are looking for information on what is going on in your community, you could contact a local librarian for direction. Head on over to any of these events and check out their offerings. You just may find a new favorite book!

Do you already have a favorite author who is represented by an independent publisher? Share your experience and ideas on what and who you are reading with your friends or on social media. This is a great way to help support the idea that books matter. It doesn 19t matter if it is one published by one of the largest or one of the smallest companies.

There is much more to learn about Small Press Month and if you head over to your trusty search engine, you will find many pages full of information on events in your area. Grab the kids and head to your favorite bookstore or library! The trip can be made into something special and have time to make a memory that will encourage reading later in life. Darcy, to an Iconic journey of Harry harmoine and Ron, I have seen the world, the magical mythical mystical and with the eyes of a reader, there is a passion behind those eyes, the level of trust they bestowed upon their writers to take them to world beyond reach and reason so they can forget all about the weight they were carrying around,

The weight of expectations, disloyalty, hurt, molestation, lose of a parent or a child, the journey to finding the love and have it slipped from their finger, the pain, heartaches and many more, the safe space books had created for me inside them is unimaginative...

Who this server is for.

This server is intended for those who write fanfiction. If you have written 1,000 words or more of fanfiction, then you can assume this includes you, if you want it to. This is an all ages server with a few important exceptions. At present, there are three text-channels that are marked NSFW, meaning you will need to verify that you are of age to view them. Those text-channels are: nsfw-warren, nsfw-celebritiesrpf, and nsfw-musicbands. They are marked that way for these reasons: #nsfw-warren is a place to talk about writing fic that is rated M or E, #nsfw-celebritiesrpf and #nsfw-musicbands are marked that way because they are under increased moderation and discretion because they may deal with real persons who are living.

This server is open to individuals 13+ with the nsfw channels being restricted to those 18+. Any user found to enter an nsfw channel under the age of 18 will be subject to disciplinary action. Your curiosity and maturity is not wroth getting someone else in trouble.

Metamorprose is intended as a place for people who have a current or frequent interest in writing fanfiction. This does not mean that you must be writing at a certain pace or publishing a specific amount. Writer’s Block happens and so does real life. What this does mean is that if you are just a casual fanfiction reader who rarely writes that this might not be the most fun place for you. If you are an avid reader who has a lot of recs, even if you don’t write, you are welcome to join and see what happens. Any specific entry requirements or rules will be implemented and updated on an as-needed basis. For now, it is up to your discretion whether or not you would be a good fit.

How is it set up?

Metamorprose is vaguely rabbit themed in honor of ‘plot bunnies’ and their legacy. You do not have to care about or like rabbits. It was just the first naming scheme that came to mind.

What is Discord?

Discord advertises itself as “Free Voice and Text Chat for Gamers.” In addition to self-proclaimed gamers, it is also a place where one might find those who are interested in “memes” as a way of life and anime/manga fans with some overlap with tech-savviness. These are all generalizations, though.

Discord, in my personal experience, is very similar to Skype but with many more options. It is also, at present, ad-free, and to my knowledge plans to stay that way. If you are interested, the Discord team has provided a comparison chart of their features: https://discordapp.com/features

If you do game, do voice chat, or anything else, then it is my understanding that it really is a great application to use for that. For simple, text-based creatures like myself who rarely play games, however, it is a perfectly serviceable place to keep organized chats and PMs, all under one roof.

Another great thing about Discord is that you have several options to use it. You can use it in your browser simply by pressing “Open Discord” on the app’s homepage. You can use it in a desktop program/application, available for download on the app’s homepage. You may also use their mobile app, which to my knowledge is available for both iOS and Android. (I use Android, so if you have iOS issues with it, not my area.)

What are Roles?

A “Role” is a discord feature and term that determines aspects of a user’s status, permissions, and abilities within a server and its individual channels. For the purposes of Metamorprose, you should choose the one or two most-relevant genre/media roles and the posting medium (where you put your fic most-often) for yourself. The genre/media role will determine your username color, and if anyone hates their genre’s color I would be open to putting it to a poll. If you have more than one genre, you will inherit the color of the genre that comes first in the alphabet. AO3/Fanfiction.net/tumblr roles do not impact your name color.

How do I set a Role or Roles for myself?

First, you need to be in the text-channel #rabbithole. I am just learning about bot usage for this venture, but at present I use a bot called Nadeko. She is a bot who sits there on the channel at all times and will, unless she is having server downtime, respond to your commands. The commands you need to know for self-assigning roles are:

you: .lsar

Sending the message ‘.lsar’ will show you a list of self-assignable roles.

you: .iam ROLE

Sending the message ‘.iam ROLE’ will assign the role typed in place of ROLE to you. For example, if I want to assign myself the Anime & Manga role, I type this exactly: ‘.iam Anime & Manga’. Nadeko will message you back when the deed is done. If It doesn’t work immediately, try again in a few minutes.

you: .iamnot ROLE

Sending the message ‘.iamnot ROLE’ will unassign the role typed in place of ROLE to you. For example, let’s say I am finished with my current Anime & Manga fic project or am moving on to another fic for now. I can type exactly this: ‘.iamnot Anime & Manga’ and Nadeko will tell me when she has unassigned the role from me.

Please note that using these roles most effectively is not assigning yourself every single one of the genre/media roles that you sort of like. Having one or two genre/media roles active at once will make it easy for people to see what you are currently interested in writing, are writing, etc. There are plenty of places you can ping-pong from liked-topic to liked-topic at the speed of your fingertips, tumblr included. This server will be the greatest resource to you if you use roles and the genre-specific text-channels judiciously. You can alter your roles as much as you want, within reason, so you are not stuck just because you have an interest shift. (Trust me, I am the queen of multifandom lack of focus.) Just don’t abuse Nadeko. She is a free service who does not belong to me.

What/why Metamorprose?

I just wanted a name for the server that was kind-of unique and meant something.

“Metamorphose” is a verb meaning to change the form or nature of; transform.

“Prose” is what most of us write in, striving for the middle ground between purple and beige.

In the age-old fandom tradition, therefore, it is a portmanteau for the process of creative transformative works: metamorprose.

Rules for Metamorprose.

1. Treat others with courtesy and respect. Do not insult a person, disagree respectfully, and only offer constructive criticism.

2. Do not bait or otherwise goad another user into misbehavior. This will be considered misbehavior as well. If you are having an issue with a user, please come to the adminabun or any assigned mods to deal with it.

3. Do not post NSFW material in non nsfw channels. This does NOT include posting clearly marked M/E-rated fics in fic rec channels.

4. Keep on-topic within reason in the text channels that are not the #foxden. Reasonable and brief rabbit trails are fine, but don't turn them into niche off-topic channels.

5. Use good sense. Use discord's features appropriately. If you don't know how to or if you can do something, Google it first. If you can't figure it out from the first page of Google results, ask someone you trust. The adminabun is willing to take your questions about discord operation, within reason, after you have tried googling it yourself.

6. Non NSFW-channels should be kept at a PG-13 tone. There are no nsfw or profanity filters set up on the non-nsfw channels, so this is based on the honor system and abuse of this WILL get you warned.

7. Theft or plagiarism will merit a warning or an immediate ban, depending on context and severity, at admin/mod discretion. 8. Do not direct people directly to your patreon or ko-fi page. What you do in PMs with friends is up to you but do not otherwise promote monetary gain for yourself on this channel.

9. Do not offer financially-compensated commissions on this channel for fic or for art.

10. More rules may be added and will be announced, but ignorance of a rule is not an excuse to not follow it.

Punishments on Metamorprose.

Egregious and flagrant violation of any of the above rules or other abusive behavior may be cause for immediate ban. However, the general rule is that 3 warnings result in a softban. This will ban you but will allow you to rejoin the channel again after you’ve had a cool-down. 5 warnings will result in a permanent ban.
