I love it when I'm surrounded by books. The smell of it is just so nostalgic. Don't you think so too?

Would you recommend working in a bookstore if you are an introvert? I want to but I'm a little worried about speaking to customers all day.
Well, it depends. I'm an ambivert myself; I'm great with people and I can also be just fine not leaving my house for a week, and I love my bookstore job. I work for an indie bookstore and I've known the owners since I was ten years old (theirs is the first shop I was allowed to cross the street all by myself to visit; I remind them of this regularly, lol), so I'm pretty relaxed when I'm there--but then, I've come to the realization that I don't need to be super "on" all of the time in order to do a good job. Generally I greet customers as they come in, ask if they need any help or wish to have a browse, and tell them to yell if they need me or make suggestions as necessary. But I don't follow the customer around and try to sell them books! I'll put books in their hands if they like, but it's not like clothing retail in that way. In that sense, working at a bookstore is pretty good for an introvert because the people who come into bookstores generally want to be left alone until they need help or ask for a recommendation, so you can get away with merely checking in on them every so often.
That said, you will get regulars, you will get talkers, and you will get people who demand your time and attention the entire time they're in your store. Having tricks and methods of dealing with these people is unique to each of us and I do recommend coming up with coping methods before you begin working. "I need to take a moment" and then hiding in the stacks is perfectly reasonable. :-)
And then go home, have a nice hot shower and a cup of tea and decompress in your preferred way, because any kind of customer service is tiring, and can be draining if you're an introvert. But it's also fun! You get to read for work! You get BOXES full of ARCs and free merch! You get to meet writers and poets and artists and all sorts of interesting people! Book people are lovely, so remember to have fun.
I really hope this helps. Good luck!

Yesterday a woman entered the shop and spent a great deal of time silently browsing through books about animals. She took several books down from the shelves and stacked them neatly on the floor. After about 45 minutes, she put every last book back exactly where it had been before. Then she turned to me and said:
"Kangaroo mothers keep their babies in a stay-fresh pouch."
And then she left.
I do not know what this means. I do not understand who these people are, or why they come to my shop.

“Democracies die by foreign invasion, but they also die by homegrown authoritarian malignancies. That is happening now in the United States, and Writers for Democratic Action calls on YOU to stop it!  Join us in protecting representative government with the most powerful weapon we still have: the Vote.
WDA is launching BOOK THE VOTE, a drive to bring together readers, writers, booksellers, publishers, and librarians to register voters before the 2022 elections. Books themselves are threatened now, which is no surprise since books have always been essential to democracy. The Bookstore and the Library can be the frontline of the campaign to rescue it.”

I’m on vacation at the coast for a few days and I got to go to one of my favorite independent bookstores!

I’ve loved this book store since I was a kid. It’s aisles are stacked to the gills with new and used books. It’s honestly one of the coolest bookstores I’ve ever been to.
And my little book haul!
On this trip I picked up:
Winters Orbit
Rosalind Palmer Takes the Cake
Glass Syndrome

I know Barnes & Noble is like the only chain book store around, but like it just feels so wrong to go in there. Like overly sanitized. Everything's so spread out it's got strong mega church vibes.
Verses like a local bookstore of any size is a bit cramped, the books aren't all lined up perfect at the edge because people have been looking through them. There's a tad bit of dust and maybe a cat. Feels cozy.
