'I'm in Love with the Villainess' English Audiobook Debuts
On Thursday, November 16, Seven Seas Entertainment released its unabridged audiobook adaptation of the first volume of Inori's I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou). The audiobook, released under Seven Sea's audio imprint, Siren, is narrated by Courtney Shaw (Liz and the Blue Bird).
Initially released in English in 2020, the first volume of I'm in Love with the Villainess follows office worker Ohashi Rei, who is reincarnated as Rae, the protagonist of her favorite otome game. However, Rae is not interested in the fantasy world's many eligible royal bachelors from the game and instead only has eyes for Claire François, the antagonist. Rae uses her knowledge of the game and its world to get close to her beloved villainess and swears that she will save her from her ultimate fate when the revolution comes.
The audiobook edition is 6 hours and 54 minutes long. It is produced by John Marshall Media.
This seminal Yuri series is notable for its explicit focus on and discussion of different LGBTQ+ identities, including queer marriages and families. The series, which began as a webnovel on Shosetsuka ni Naro, is a sleeper hit. It was initially licensed in Japan as a digital-only light novel series by GL Bunko but gained popularity, especially in international markets, leading to multiple rereleases, adaptations, and spinoffs.
YuriMother gave the first light novel volume a perfect 10/10 review, calling it "A stunningly profound, entertaining, and queer title that eclipses other isekai and Yuri series."
Tumblr media
An anime adaptation of the series is currently airing on Tokyo MX and streaming internationally on Crunchyroll. It is produced by Platinum Vision and directed by Hideki Oba.
The I'm in Love with a Villainess Volume 1 audiobook is available on Audible, BookWalker Global, Spotify, Google Play, and other major audio platforms. The second volume will be released on December 7.

PLEASE READ FIRST!!
Before proceeding to the chapters below, I'd like to highly encourage you (if you are financially able) to purchase the volumes for yourselves either digitally or physically. Even if you're unable to read them, it shows support for this amazing franchise, so that maybe one day we can get an officially licensed version. I put all this work into this project for the English-speaking fans of the games who can't enjoy the (frankly incredible) manga version. But I'm always hoping for it to get picked up by an English publisher to distribute in a legal capacity. Until then, this blog will go on!
For instructions on how to do so:
Thankfully, it's easier (and cheaper) than ever to purchase thanks to BookWalker. They have both an English and Japanese site, so you can easily make your account on the global site, then switch over to the Japanese version to purchase Japanese copies of manga. It's all under the same account. But what you might have to do is first if purchasing from the Japanese site is buy "Coins", which you can then use to buy whatever you want. (I've had issues directly paying with Yen, but if it works for you, awesome!)
Here's the link to the entire series by volume
After putting something in your cart, you'll press this orange button
Tumblr media
then on the payment page, ignore the right side, you're going to buy Coins first on the left (though as of this writing they'll be called Points by March of this year). Press the green text button.
Tumblr media
Then it should look something like this, where you'll click the orange button
Tumblr media
And you should be good to go!!!! If you run into any trouble or have any questions though, feel free to message me so I can help you through it.
For those who'd like physical copies, I bought mine through CDJapan.co.jp , just put "被虐のノエル" in the search bar and filter out sold out items. Just be careful not to buy the light novels by accident. This is also where you can still buy the Drama CD! Which is excellent!! I'm in the middle of translating that too, but what's great about it is that it comes with a script book, so you can always get the gist yourself with google translate camera. Highly recommend for fans of Fugo and/or Oscar.
If you read all the way down this far, thank you!! I hope you enjoy my passion project <3

[Eng] Yumi Tamura's Message to Fumi Yoshinaga in Ōoku Vol. 19 Special Edition
Tumblr media
[^Image is a cropped & monochrome copy of original*]
Fan translation of Tamura’s congratulatory message to Yoshinaga. The original message and accompanying illustration was included in the Special Edition of Ōoku’s final volume, released on February 26, 2021.
—————————
“Fumi Yoshinaga,
Congratulations on the completion of Ōoku!
Well done on your hard work throughout the 16-year serialization! It’s a crowning achievement! The series was magnificent! Captivating! Just amazing. I was fully immersed in it. I can’t help but be green with envy, wondering how you could create such a work of art.
As I read your work, I constantly thought about what you wanted to say in it. I kept looking at the predicaments, conflicts, and heroic way of life of each man and woman, while being swept up in the interpretations that my mind could reach, but also by a strong belief and suspicion that there must be something different hidden in them. I really enjoyed it.
Due to a plague like (just like!) in the story, we can no longer see each other as often, but you always have my support. And someday, I would love to taste your scrumptious home-cooked food again.”
TAMU
Yumi Tamura
(In a side comment, Tamura explains that she drew Yoshimune because Yoshimune is from Wakayama/Kishū Domain like Tamura)
—————————
*For the full image in color (not to mention other great content), please purchase an official copy of the special edition. Digital version available on Bookwalker Japan (using a registered “Global” account is OK). Physical version available on Amazon Japan, CD Japan, or wherever you typically order similar products. To find the edition, input the following keywords in the search bar: 大奥 公式ビジュアルファンブック大奥-没日後録-付き特装版

Apologies for how random this question is, but I figured you might know the answer: when you buy both English and Japanese books on bookwalker, do both releases show up in your library without any fuss, or are there separate apps needed for bookwalker global and bookwalker jp?
Uh, I don't...buy English books on Bookwalker? I much prefer physical books to ebooks in general and really only do ebooks for Japanese stuff because it's much easier to read with a dictionary open that way and I have to pay less in shipping (and faster, for the monthly magazine releases, of course).
(Plus I have an ereader that is much less painful to read on than my phone regardless)
But at least on my browser, I can peruse the English store on my normal account with my Japanese library. So I'd...assume they go to the same library?
I honestly don't know. Sorry.

Japanese Comics of the 2010s Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing my retrospective on Japanese comics during the 2010s, to go back a smidgen further Shojo Beat Magazine had its last issue in July 2009. However, the label itself has soldiered on (next year marking the 15th anniversary) and still publishes many volumes of manga each month for an audience from teens to adults. Admittedly I’ve had my ups and down with the imprint over the years and my purchases over time are fewer than before. However, VIZ Media also brings such titles out occasionally in its general or signature line as well. I’ve previously reviewed the ongoing Shakespearean inspired Requiem of the Rose King (VIZ) by Aya Kanno. Bloody Mary (Shojo Beat) by Akaza Samamiya, a slightly odd vampire series is also another more recent title that made my shelf since I enjoy different and quirky takes on one of the most popular creatures of folklore.
Though in English Shojo Beat is still without a doubt the iconic brand of Japanese comics aimed at girls and women, I’ve got titles from five more publishers on this 2010s list too…
  The Angel of Elhamburg
Just as gorgeous and melancholic as previous titles by Aki, The Angel of Elhamburg is about the long-term relationship between two friends, one who will rise to become King aided by the other and the presence of a reappearing angel at the castle. The English edition by Yen Press is particularly attractive in hardcover with colour inserts.
  No. 6
No. 6, a novel series by Atsuko Asano which began in 2003 published by Kodansha, in 2011 also saw an animated adaptation and with artist Hinoki Kino a nine-volume comic adaptation. A sci-fi story set in a utopian country (or is it dystopian?) with action, thrills, tragedy and queer characters is a fine example of genre fiction. With stronger and growing English light novel market in recent years, here’s hoping the original source material will also make its way over in the future.
The Prince in His Dark Days
A gender bender variation on The Prince and the Pauper this is one series that if you’re unfamiliar with artist Hico Yamanaka can unexpectedly carry a punch.  Or maybe if you’re having some dark days yourself this is a comic that will speak to you. In English from Kodansha Comics USA.
  Orange
Something of a sensation with an animated adaptation as well, Orange by Ichigo Takano is a title still on my TBR list. I could use the excuse the series hasn’t exactly ended with a seventh volume in the works. But I also know its subject matter around the suicide of a classmate and the effects to a group of friends isn’t going to be an easy read. Also, because it’s a story that shows some of the very powerful capacity of fiction. Exploring what is impossible, trying to change the past. Available in English from Seven Seas.
  The Full-Time Wife Escapist
Mikuri Moriyama is a young adult out of college with a good degree, yet struggles to be employed. When she ends up working as a housekeeper it’s the start of a surprising relationship. This 11-volume series with a large cast of adult characters in different phases of their lives has also been adapted to a live-action drama. A title that is part of the digital-first initiative by Kodansha Comics USA, it’s unfortunate The Full-Time Wife Escapist may be one series that is overlooked.
  Stories from 311
Unfortunately, the decade also saw a disaster like the March 11, 2011 Great Tôhoku Earthquake. Many creators responded in the aftermath, one example Stories from 311. This two-volume charity anthology with 10 artists contributing short comics is digital-only in English available on Bookwalker Global.
Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card
Of the many titles the team of CLAMP have developed over the years their mid-90s to 2000s magical girl series Cardcaptor Sakura might be counted as one of the few that fans could recommend for a story with decent length but, also actually having an ending. An exploration of different forms of love and relationships it holds a lot of nostalgia for me as I’m sure others. However, return to it all these years later they have with these characters a little older, and the cards too once again changing. Available in English from Kodansha Comics USA.
  She and Her Cat
With so many stories making a jump to the screen, here is one that came from screen to page. A year in the life of a woman and her adopted cat. Simple yet profound artist Tsubasa Yamaguchi does beautiful justice to this story by Makoto Shinkai. Available in English from Vertical Comics.

I guess this deserves a bigger announcement:
Lotus Eaters is now available officially in English through Bookwalker Global. The first three chapters are already up (and free). As with Forbidden Scrollery, this means I will stop my fan translations.
Ah, finally I get to retire.
