“Come on, Boruto! Hurry up!” Sarada was absolutely ecstatic. The grin on her face, as well as the pink tint on her cheeks, were starting to look permanent. And if Boruto just wasn’t such a sore loser, he might have found it cute. Maybe.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” he muttered and stuffed his hands in his pockets. His lower lip jutted out as he watched her walk ahead with a spring in her step, short hair swaying along with the cool spring breeze, and that sweet smile on her face.
Yeah, he definitely didn’t find her cute. At all.
It was a bad idea, letting her taunt him into making a bet that she could hit more bullseyes than he could. But his stupid pride and his stupid want to look cool in front of her had won over. Sarada was the best at shuriken jutsu. Everyone knew that, including Boruto. But despite knowing the facts, he took her up on her bet.
“Loser buys coffee after training.” She grinned slyly.
“Ha! You’re on. But if I win, we go to Thunder Burger,” Boruto huffed.
“It doesn’t matter where you want to go, because we’re surely going to Ninbucks,” Sarada replied as she crossed her arms across her chest.
And that is exactly what happened. Boruto should have already known—Sarada was always right. Now he was standing outside the coffee shop, gazing up at the green logo and sighed. Of course, she would want to take advantage of her win and come here. Boruto could kiss that pack of Ninja cards goodbye.
He followed her into the store, the aroma of coffee enveloping his senses. Boruto took a deep breath and closed his eyes, and a small smile formed on his lips. Okay, maybe coming here wasn’t such a bad idea.
“What should I have, what should I have,” Sarada mused to herself as she tapped her lower lip with her index finger, those dark eyes gazing at the menu board overhead. “What will you be getting, Boruto?”
His eyes widened a bit, he hadn’t thought about it. All he thought about was getting Sarada her coffee. He didn’t think that they would actually be staying in the cafe. “I don’t know yet,” he admitted and stood next to her in the queue in order to see what they were offering.
“I think I want to get a cake, too.” Sarada looked at the chiller before her, her dark eyes going wide with excitement. “Their chocolate cake here is good.”
“Hey!” Boruto puffed his cheeks. “Our bet just involved coffee!”
“Yes, yes,” Sarada waved her hand at him dismissively. “This one’s on me. Let’s share.” She turned her gaze at him and smiled.
His eyes widened and turned his face away. “O-okay, fine.”
Sarada walked up to the cashier and said her orders. She then turned to look at Boruto and asked what he wanted. “I’ll have what you’re having.”
This surprised her, but she grinned. “Good choice.” She said before turning to the cashier to finalize her order. Boruto pulled out his wallet and handed the cashier some bills, and Sarada did the same.
They both walked over to an empty table and sat across from each other. The couch was surprisingly comfortable. Paired with the smell of coffee and Sarada’s warm presence, Boruto allowed himself to relax and lean back. The two of them spoke about their training routine, and it wasn’t long until they called Sarada’s name to pick up their orders. She made a move to stand, but Boruto stopped her. “Don’t worry, I got it.” He got up on his feet and picked up the tray.
Blue eyes widened when he turned and caught sight of her. The way Sarada was leaning back on the couch with a tired yet soft smile on her face as she watched him approach, the light from the window giving her an ethereal glow. His heart stuttered for a moment.
Okay… Maybe he did find her cute.
Boruto carefully put the tray down on the table in front of them, cheeks tinted pink as he was now so painfully aware of her attention on him. He peeked at her, deeming it safe now that she was cooing over the cake and coffee. Boruto swallowed and his cheeks burned all the more.
If buying her coffee meant seeing her smile like this, he wouldn’t mind doing it a little more often.
The cake really was good, and Boruto enjoyed sharing it with her. The coffee that Sarada chose was also pretty good, just the right amount of bitter and sweet mixed into one smooth hot concoction.
“Better than Thunder Burger, huh?” She asked slyly.
“What?” How could she even suggest such a thing? “No way!” He scoffed.
Sarada giggled and took a sip of her coffee. “It was worth a shot, but this is nice for a change, don’t you think? You shouldn’t be eating too many burgers, too.”
“I can eat what I want,” Boruto sulked, taking a small sip of his coffee. The taste was far from his favorite, but he had to admit, Sarada was right. “Though… I guess you’re right. This is nice,” he muttered.
That put a wide grin on her face, cheeks turning pink. “I’m happy.” Sarada scooted off the chair and pulled her phone out. “We should take a photo. The day that I almost made you admit Ninbucks is better than Thunder Burger, and treat me to a coffee date.” She took her glasses off, picked up the coffee cup and looked back at him. “Ready?”
Boruto was shocked, too little time to react to what she just said.
A coffee date?!
His cheeks burned. So this is a date. And with Sarada, too. He turned away, a pout on his face.
Sarada took a barrage of photos, and captured a portion of Boruto looking surprised, one with a pout, another peeking at her, a soft smile forming on his face, before finally turning into a wide smile.
If this is what dates were like with Sarada, maybe Boruto would want more of it.
Sarada stopped taking photos, put her glasses back on, and looked at the photos, laughing upon seeing his expression. “Boruto, what was that pout for?” She showed him the screen. “It’s not like you to be this way for photos.” She kept on scrolling and found the last photo—of her and Boruto with wide smiles on their faces. “That’s the smile I was looking for.”
She showed him a photo of the screen, and Boruto couldn’t help but smile warmly. “Send me that, would ya?”
“Sure. I’ll post it, too.” Sarada got on her phone, thumbs going over the screen, sending him the photo and posting it on Ninstagram.
Right when Sarada posted it, she put her phone away and went back to her coffee, chatting about what her hopes were for their next mission. Boruto did the same and took a slice of cake, happily exchanging wishes for a higher ranked mission next time as well.
Boruto walked her home, just when the sun was setting and the sky was painted with colors of pink and orange. He waved at her, and waited until she was inside before turning heel and walking towards his own house. The phone in his pocket started vibrating like crazy, and he pulled it out, looking at all the notifications his guy friends were sending in their group chat.
His eyes went wide and heat filled his cheeks as he read the messages from his friends, all filled with teasing—teasing him with Sarada. Boruto couldn’t even speak right, choking on words and feeling his face heat up from all of their messages. Boruto stuffed his phone in his pocket and marched away.
As much as he tried being huffy about it, whenever he would think about Sarada, his heart would feel so much lighter and at some point, he couldn’t stop smiling. He caught himself, groaned and stuffed his hands in his pockets.
Great. Boruto’s crushing on Sarada.
He kicked a rock on the pavement and pouted. Well, it’s not like he would ever admit it.
At least, for now.

Your name
Coming out of Hokage tower, she did not expect to see Boruto. He stood leaning against the pillar waiting for her.
"Hey," he approached her with a wide smile.
"Hey," she answered and smile back, but she was still surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm taking you for a walk," At this moment she noticed that he was dressed in a civilian outfit, light pink shirt, black jeans and jacked. It looked casual and elegant at same time. Although her day at work was quite busy, she nodded and followed him.
"I hope my father doesn't give you all his paperwork. Maybe you are the candidate for his successor, but it's still his duties " he sighed as they passed streets of the village.
"It's not that bad, and I think I can handle these documents better than he does," she said, giggling slightly.
They walked slowly along the sidewalk, through crowd of civilians returning home from day at work. After some time, she realized that they were going towards the training fields. Rather, none of them were dressed for the sparring, but at this time of day grounds should be empty. There will certainly be less people there than in the park. Her thoughts were interrupted by the feeling of his hand gently brushing against hers. A delicate blush appeared on her cheeks. It seemed embarrassing to her that after 3 years of relationship, she always reacted this way. Being in the crowd of people she always felt embarrassed to show feelings. It seemed terribly unnatural to her. Boruto was exactly opposite, but he respected her space, for which she was grateful. Although there were also moments when both of them get lost in emotions and forget the whole world around them ...
They went  through green areas marred by craters, burnt plants or other remnants of shinobi training. As she expected, so far they have seen only two genins. Despite this, the blond continued to lead her towards the area belonging to her family. A training field where once stood Uchiha compound. At least, this part which wasn’t given for other village investments. As they walked, they reached a stone tablet with an engraved text that only few were able to read.
She felt that Boruto grab her hand. She smiled slightly and gently squeezed his. They stood there for a moment in complete silence. The blond man was acting strange, a bit nervously. His hands were sweaty, she even could feel his pulse. Looking at his behaviour, she would think that he wants to propose. The problem was that they had been engaged for half a year ... She couldn't think of what would made him this nervous.
"Maybe we'll sit down" he said pointing to a place under the nearest tree.
"Okay" she replied, doing what he told. They sat on the grass facing each other, but Uzumaki still did not release her hand holding her between his.
"Boruto ... What's going on?" She asked, unable to hold on longer, was something wrong?
The blond shuddered a little, as if she woke him from a trance.
“I ... I've talked to my parents about it ... And I wanted to ... I wanted to ask you... I would like to take your surname after marriage ...” It was something she didn't expect. To be honest, she hasn't thought about it so far. She remembered that when she was little she was annoyed by the fact that traditionally the girl is the one who takes her husband's name. But now, from the perspective of spending all her life with the person she love, it didn't seem so important to her. " I mean ... I thought that considering everything that happened and history of your family. I would like ... I would like you to become Hokage as Uchiha.”
She looked at him for a long moment. She didn't know what to say. She remembered the day her dad told her the whole truth about her clan history. It was one of the most difficult moments in her life. After such a thing, she was not able to look at the leaf village in the same way, there was a moment when she wanted to give up her dream of becoming a Hokage, and even drop shinobi carrier. Now she wanted to become a leader who would be able to protect all the inhabitants of the village, including those who would disagree with her views. To do everything she could to that tragedy like this never happen again. She felt tears appeared in her eyes. Seeing this Boruto embraced her face with his hands and gently pulled her to him.
“Sarada?”
"T-thank you," she cried, leaning on him “ It’s mean so much ...”
Not wanting him to see her tears, she put her arms around his waist and buried her face in his torso.
"I know," he replied, stroking her hair. They sat so cuddled up for a moment before she heard his laughter.
“What is so funny?”
"Nothing ... You just reacted more emotionally to this than to my proposal, it hurts ..." he sighed, making a dramatic pose.
"You mean when I asked you to marry me?" She smirked.
“I remember it different ...” The blond man embraced her around waist and pulled her on his lap. “I started to ask a question exactly 1.5 seconds before you...  And unlike you I planned to propose that day...”
She leaned closer, embracing him and gently tangled her hands in his hair.
“You say like I could married anyone else ...”
They stared into each other's eyes for a long moment, and the distance between them was getting shorter.
“Thank you for everything...”
“I love you too” said Uzumaki, making her blush. After being together for so long, she still couldn't understand how he was able to talk about something as important as love so easily. Reminding her of his feelings towards her whenever she needed it. The problem always appeared when she wanted to answer, for some reason she could never find the right words. So she kissed him. It was a slight touch of lips, much different from the hot kisses that they used to share nowadays, but still filled with the same emotions and need. It wasn't long before her fiancé deepened the kiss, gently embracing her face and stroking her cheek. They separated, and Sarada press forehead against his, once again looking at these beautiful blue eyes, expressing so many feelings at that moment.
“I ... I love you” she whispered softly, but she seen in his eyes that he heard her, that he really knew it “And I will... Always ...”
..............................................
Soooo I thought a lot of that it would be cute if Boruto take Uchiha name after their marriage. (although I think that they would be equal cute as Uzumaki)
I hope you like this short story, happy BoruSara week everyone <3

When I Was Promised Love, This Is Not What I Expected

❀ A/N It’s still the 25th in here so please don’t judge. This Soulmate AU has been sitting on my drive for so long I decided to show it to the world. I’m not very comfortable with my writing recently, hence why I’ve been barely posting but I’ll try to manage my time better so I can come back here and have my priorities straight. This is not a promise. Anyhow, I’m thankful for being part of this amazing fandom through which I met people I can’t picture my life without and I’m ready to celebrate one more BoruSara week!
BoruSara Week Day 1
“Sarada, do you think we will ever find love?”
The vibe of the slumber party had suddenly changed when the girls started to talk about their frustrating love lives. Chocho’s words were a trigger and Sarada, even though having nothing to share about the subject in general, had made that same question to herself many times, never coming to a result.
“Maybe. We supposedly will,” she managed to answer sincerely.
During the long silent period that followed, all the girls got immersed in their own minds, including Sarada. She held back the urge to check once more the words written over her forearm in look for explanations that were impossible to reach.
‘Will we ever find love?’ she wondered incessantly.
If they weren’t supposed to, what was the meaning of everything? She thought about her parents’ story, about how they met at a young age and the long way they went through before actually getting together. Their promised words were simple and clear: Sakura had his name on her arm and Sasuke had the sentence “what’s your name?” Meanwhile, Sarada didn’t possess the same luck, holding an unhelpful “hey” on her arm. Ever since she first learned what it meant she got frustrated; those words should be used to guide a person towards their soulmates and she couldn’t believe hers meant nothing.
‘Will I ever find love?’ she tried to settle but it was unlikely.
Every new person who greeted her with “hey” or anything in that area made her look if the golden words over her arm had turned into a black tattoo, a long-time habit that was becoming old as she progressively gave up. She had seen people finding their soulmates at events, parties, stores and even concerts she went, but her time never came and she was done waiting for it.
Maybe she would meet the love of her life but she was decided to stop looking for it. Let it happen. Maybe it would. Supposedly.
Her friends were gone in the morning and since her mom had left to work in the break of dawn Sarada was alone rather early for her liking. Although being used to it, for some reason, she felt the urge to be outside and enjoy the beautiful day that had just begun. With no purpose for staying at home, Sarada was soon at the streets, feeling the always delightful summer breeze and the warm sun rays against her skin. It felt good to be outside for once, in a way she couldn’t understand. Passing by an ice cream shop, she decided it could do no harm and went in.
Many flavors were listed on the menu and she took her time to decide; it needed to be different but tasteful and match her summer feeling. She got closer to the cashier and smiled.
“Hello! I want a pineapple ice cream.”
The attendant was a polite and slightly older man. “You’re a lucky girl! We don’t have much left, only enough for you.”
She smiled fondly, happy that they still had that flavor and that the morning was indeed so pretty. The girl had just taken her ice cream in hands when a blond boy entered, and seemed so bothered that his negative vibe made her chill. It was an instant dislike.
“Do you have pineapple ice cream?” He asked and the attendant looked at Sarada; she couldn’t do much but laugh at the situation.
“I’m sorry, that girl just took all we had left.” The man apologized.
The pair of blue eyes, that didn’t look at her once since the owner’s entrance, suddenly locked on her. He was simply pissed and Sarada would take a step back but she was no woman to run away.
"Hey! This ice-cream should mine!" He said, looking at the cone on her hands.
Sarada smirked and took a bite, laughing even more than before. "Too bad I already licked it then."
"This is not funny! My sister will be so mad at me! No other place has a pineapple flavor at all, this was my only chance." He complained in a quite aggressive tone. If Sarada didn’t like him before he said any words, she disliked him even more after.
"This is not my problem and you're being extremely unreasonable." She mimicked his tone.
He rolled his eyes. “What do you know?”
“Apparently I know how to talk to people better than you do.”
“You say that but you’re doing the exact same thing I am.”
“Listen here. I don’t…”
It was then that they both felt a burn on their arms, right over the words Sarada stared so profusely the night before, one that made their hands go straight into it. She was scared to look but the boy in front of her did it and started to laugh right after, suddenly relaxed.
Boruto had deliberately denied telling anyone his soulmate's first words as he was the only one that could see it. He asked himself how could a person ever say such a thing in a first encounter but smiled when thinking about how unique they would be together and about what could his other half have on their arm. He never thought it could be it. The girl in front of him was pretty; even if he thought destiny was just joking when brought them together that way, he wanted to know more than her favorite ice cream flavor.
Sarada looked at him one more time before seeing the black tattoo over her arm. She took a deep breath and thought about it for a second. It was impossible to avoid your soulmate, she knew it, even when apparently there was a mistake. She would never love anyone that screams at others for no reason.
"Well, that's unusual," the attendant of the ice cream shop broke the awkward silence that had settled with a smug expression. "I've never seen soulmates fighting when they traded their first words."
As the couple didn’t show any reaction, the man started to get uncomfortable as well. It seemed like they didn't know what to do next; everyone always talked about what happened before, about the first words and that exact moment where they found their soulmate and knew they were for life. No one ever talked about how to deal with it.
At his constant stare, Sarada felt completely different from anything she had in life. "I can't believe that you, out of all the nice people I've met, are my…"
“For all you know, I could be really nice.”
“Or you could be terrible.” She said matter-of-factly.
“To be fair you can also be really terrible. If that’s the case then we can be terrible together and scare little kids in public spaces.” A smug grin grew on his face; Sarada knew he was proud.
“Yeah, I’m thinking no… But thanks.” She held back her own smile.
Boruto chuckled and walked away, closer to the booths in the back of the shop, followed by a confused and kinda mad Sarada. “I’m Boruto by the way. You?”
With narrowed eyes, she slowly enounced her name. “Sarada.”
He turned away and sat, waiting for her to sit across. “I think we began in the wrong way.”
“Oh, you think?” Sarada wondered if that was the time to use her self defense skills and kick his snob ass to space, however, something about his smile of the way he moved his hair away from his face made her stay still and appreciate it.
"Sarada… Your name is Sarada right?” She tried to glare him but whenever she looked at his direction a blush spread itself all over her face. He was it. He was her long-awaited love. And he was a jerk.
“What.”
“Don’t be mad at me,” Boruto said, smirking. “It’s none of our faults that fate wants us together.”
Sarada crossed her arms. “Does fate have a customer attendance service? I want to file a complaint.”
“We’ll have a long time in our lives for you to complain about it as much as you want.” He looked to the other side. "I'm sorry for screaming at you."
"It was extremely uncalled for."
"I’m not just a rude person, I swear. My sister is sick so she can't leave the house. It's kinda stressful but, since it's summer, I just wanted to sneak in some ice cream to her and I know pineapple is her favorite. I think I went too far."
"You did. Nonetheless, if that was the case you're forgiven."
Boruto lightly took her arm from over the table and checked the single word on it. His smile made her blush.
“I always wondered what my words to my soulmate would be and I cannot believe that it’s only 'hey'." Boruto grinned while he showed his extended left arm for her. "I wanted to know how you'd be like. Those are bold words, the kind of thing you listen once or twice in a lifetime, if ever." Sarada could read ‘too bad I already licked it then’ written in black over his arm and she immediately got red all over. It was not a great sentence, she should've shut her mouth. Seeing her reaction he retrieved his arm. "Well, it could be worse. You were just talking about ice cream. Which by the way we should probably take another one for you." He pointed at her long-forgotten pineapple-flavored ice-cream that splashed against the floor.
Sarada denied his offer but he asked for a coconut ice cream himself. She watched as Boruto called his sister saying he would be late and explaining the situation and overheard the screaming answer he got. Truth to be told, Sarada had never felt so vulnerable. He was just a random guy that all of a sudden had a lifetime promise by her side. As Boruto looked inside her eyes she felt like he could read her thoughts. She couldn’t understand why she wanted to stare deep in his blue eyes for the rest of her life. Maybe she wasn’t supposed to understand the way he had such an effect on her, even when rationally he was not on her good side. When he finished his ice cream they got up and walked towards the door in silence.
She fidgeted her dress, looked everywhere else but him. Words were trying to escape her throat as she walked nervously through the streets. In a deep breath, she let it go. “Do we really need to get together now? We barely know each other.”
He chuckled. “No. Destiny is not decided for us. It’s entirely our choice as to if we want to follow this path. We were only given an option. I understand if you want to walk away.” He casually said.
Sarada stopped on the spot and her sight suddenly couldn’t leave him. After all his positiveness towards the situation, she was afraid he was backing out on them or in what they could be because of how she placed her words. However, when he took both her hands, blue eyes captivating and blond hair slight hovering over her face she couldn’t help but think if that was how having a soulmate felt. It felt like coming home after the storm, relieving and warm, safe and comfortable. His smell intoxicated her nostrils while his hand carefully interlaced their fingers. Only then she noticed that the important part was not the first words like she grew to believe, it was what happened next.
“But if we have this chance, I'd like to try,” Boruto whispered.

Behind the eyepatch
Author: Myself, also known as Draco Jenkings Target Audience: New Adults Pairings: BoruSara Genre: Romance | Angst by trauma Length: snippet with 1.681 words
Written for @borusaraweek2020, Day 3: Eyes
A/N:  To find the complete fic you’ll need to search Draco_Jenkings on Wattpad
A/N 2: The events on this fanfiction happen after 5 years from the manga. | Boruto’s looks are inspired on Dimitri (Fire Emblem: Three Houses).
A fluffy snippet bellow
At Konoha airport, the ninjas saw something that they never would imagine in their wildest dreams, an airship. It was a cigar-shaped, trussed and covered frame supported by internal gas cells, or at least, what the guide that accompanied them to it said. Inside it, they grabbed their new gear.
When Sarada saw Boruto wearing his new outfit: a new black leather eyepatch, a black and white-furred Hyüga cape, black tactical Ambu vest and her father’s katana, she almost fainted for getting too excited. In her eyes, he looked as hot as fire, and she wished it.
Sarada, in her turn, had received the same black tactical Ambu vest, new shades and a red and white Uchiha cape, which she decided to put in her bag because she found Boruto’s salmon coat more comfortable. When equipped her shades, she noticed that it wasn’t a regular accessory, but an information machine, capable of identifying and analyzing objects at her will, at a small chakra cost. A useful ninja tool.
Finally, Mitsuki had received a new Konoha white and blue robe, with extralong sleeves, a tactical Ambu vest, and some potato chips. He liked it.
Along with the presents, there was a letter addressed for the team:
___________________________
Dear Team 7,
Most of the shinobis didn’t  endure what you did nor had a greater record and sense of responsibility. You  have proven yourself worthy of this promotion from now on I, as the Hokage of  the Hidden Leaf Village, Naruto Uzumaki, recognize you as top elite ninjas  and name you official members of the Ambu, reporting directly to me.
Arise, new members of the Ambu  of the Hidden Leaf!
Uzumaki, Naruto. Hogake of the Hidden Leaf
___________________________
“Seems like from now on we’ll be getting more difficult missions,” Mitsuki commented.
“Are you complaining, Mitsuki?” Sarada said jokingly
“That never was a problem for us, was it?” Boruto smiled for the first time since he survived hell.
“Gentleman, may I accompany you to your ride?” asked the man in a tuxedo, wearing white gloves and with an odd mustache. Then, he conducted the team to their seats to travel this long ride “The estimated flight time is about 5 hours. Konoha Airlines appreciates your choice for a safe and comfortable journey and wish you to have a nice experience. Enjoy.” Then the man left.
To enter the zeppelin, they had to access a door that led to a tight corridor that had two doors, one for the pilot room and another for the living lounge. The lounge had a fancy decoration, with vintage furniture, expensive lights, the yellow wallpaper, and green carpet, equipped with a piano and a bar. There was only a bartender in the area, seems like that no one besides them was taking that flight.
At the lounge, the friends sat in two sofas blue sofas that were placed around a table and a window, showing the astonishing view of the sky.
“So, Boruto, I see that you really fostered this black eyepatch style. There is a reason for it?” Mitsuki was dying to ask him the reason behind it since he couldn’t find out by himself.
“I find it very attractive.” Added Sarada, grabbing her boyfriend’s arm and looking at his face.
“I know you everyone may find it strange since I still have both of my eyes … but I feel more comfortable hiding the eye that I share with Momoshiki from the world.” He clenched his fist “Not just it, but I rather use as little as possible the Jougan … since it activates my Karma … I …” he was feeling the weight of what he was about to confess “I cannot let myself lose control another time because. This is not just fearing losing control of my body, but because I fear to unleash the murderous monster that I became.” There was sorrow in his voice.
It was unusual to Mitsuki extend the discussion of emotional affairs, usually, he would just make a short observation that summarized it all, but this time it was important because he could see how broken ‘his sun’ was “Doing what is necessary to survive doesn’t make you a murderous monster. Boruto, listen to me you did what you had to do.” He was sad for seeing how trauma can destabilize someone, especially someone as positive and vivid as Boruto was.
“I didn’t, Mitsuki … my duty was to assure the security of the delegates, and I failed … Shikadai, Shikamaru, Master Sasuke … all of them died because of me because I wasn’t able to fulfill my duty.” Boruto was telling.
“It was a treasonous ambush! Omoi and Kumogakure were considered good friends of Konoha, they surprised everyone, no one expected that. They did this coward move, poisoning and betraying because they knew that wouldn’t be possible to defeat all of you in a fair battle. That’s why they wanted the Hokage, they wanted to destroy Konoha’s most powerful forces.” Mitsuki raised his voice, trying to make his friend see what he wasn’t being able to.
“It doesn’t matter, Mitsuki! I failed and then killed everyone, even the innocent. My hands are stained red. How could I truly hope to don’t be what I became … a murderous monster … As the personification of failure and as the sole survivor of that day, do I … do I have the right to live for myself?” his sad and dark expression was becoming the new trait of his personality, and that was how he questioned his friend.
The logic of his argument was enough to make Mitsuki think, instead of answering right away something that could make him feel better.
“I … I remember Shikadai asking me to help … me being held by the enemies, until I heard him pledging for mercy and being slain like an animal by those cowards, right in front of my eyes. He died lingering fear, and I regret not being strong enough at the right time to save him. This will not lose hold on me. So, tell me, how can I silence his desperate pleas? How … how can I save him? His voice is what kept me alive, the voice that now plea justice, this is what keeps moving me forward.” Boruto gave another question to Mitsuki think about.
Mitsuki was sad because he finally understood but couldn’t find words to make his pain go away because he wasn’t the one who could forgive him. In fact, they were surprised by betrayal, but it is understandable of Boruto to feel like he should be prepared in any situation. He was blaming himself, not just for failing, but for surviving, and now seeks retribution.
Sarada held Boruto’s face with both of her hands and looked very deeply to his sorrow eye “Everyone died because of that hosted betrayal, there wasn’t much that could be done. I don’t blame you for surviving, and you shouldn’t blame yourself. I am glad that you’re alive.” She embraced him, hiding her face in his furry cape.
Suddenly Boruto’s expression softened, remembering the caring and positive man that he once was “Sarada, I’m so sorry … I’m glad to be with you. Now I remember …” he reciprocated the hub, embracing her tightly
“What? What came to your mind?” she was curious and bright to see him looking more alive.
He finally smiled, even which made Mitsuki widen his eyes “Beyond living for bringing them justice, long ago I decided to live for that promise to you, don’t I, my cuddlepeanut?” Boruto whispered in her ear, which made blood pump heavily inside her body and feel the well-known sensation of “butterflies” flying inside her stomach.
“Baka-Boruto! And you better keep it, my sunshine” he adverted and went for a kiss which was instantly reciprocated, and getting more intense at the moment that she nibbled his lower lip and pressed her tongue inside of his mouth, at the same moment, intensifying her grab and bringing him closer, which made them fall in the sofa with Boruto had landed above her and then, just then making them remember that Mitsuki was in the room.
“Don’t mind about me, I’m already used to watching you do this all the time.” He was smiling, but no one could tell if that was because of Boruto’s emotional restoration or because of the of them making out in front of him.
“Oh lord, I forgot that you were such a pervert, Mitsuki.” He gave Sarada one last kiss before helping her to get up and then started to laugh.
Sarada, on the other hand, placed her hand in his tight and whispered in his ear “We’ll continue this later.” Kissing his cheek.
“Sorry for that, Mitsuki, It’s just that Sarada and I still have so much to catch up, you know?” he was scratching the back of his head and smiling until his expression get serious once again and proceed “I just need to say one last thing for both of you … I’m sorry for everything and, I promise that I will never commit the same mistake again, never again I'll let my guard down nor my friends die. I rather give my life away than that”.
Mitsuki stood up, jumped the table and joined their sofa, which was in front of the window, sitting on the left side of Boruto “A promise, humph? Don’t worry about, me. Just do me the favor, both of you, of looking into the camera, the window view is amazing” Mitsuki used his abilities to stretch his arm and take a perfect photograph of them, in which even Boruto had a shy smile … making the reptilian man think how much time he would need to heal completely.
After a few hours, they heard a horn.
The zeppelin trip was over, and now was time to finally, begin the mission to bring justice for their friends and loved ones, preventing an official declaration of war from Hidden Leaf against Hidden Cloud.
It was night-time when they disembarked the airship.

Not Together, Part I - BoruSara
Tumblr media
Art by @lovelysheree !
Rating: T+ for violence (ish)
Genre: Romance /a lil bit of action/lots of denial
Beta read by: @ss-tyytyy
Written for @borusaraweek2020, D1: Free Day!
A/N: Sequel for [Not A Date]
...
Boruto walked to Hokage tower with a spring in his step. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and he was called to the office for official ANBU business. Everything was right with the world. It had only been a week after his promotion to ANBU captain with his partner, and crush—Woah wait—no, not crush. Friend. Yes, that. Or like, best friend. They have been friends since they were in diapers, after all. Perhaps best friend suited it more.
Anyway, Sarada Uchiha was one of the best ninjas out there. And it only made sense they were partners because other than being in the same three-man cell back during their genin days, their chemistry was perfect. Chemistry being like, fighting. Totally not like, with romance or anything. Nope. Chemistry with fighting. They were both so in sync and just got each other.
It was a shame they aren’t together.
Boruto shook the last thought out of his mind. There was no time for that. The summon he received was urgent, and it was a task only the unstoppable duo could do. He walked up the steps and bumped into a young couple. The woman was hiding her face and weeping. Her husband—Boruto assumed—was tapping her shoulder. His face was crestfallen, but he tried to console her… he was failing at it though.
The young Jonin didn’t know what to do. He wanted to help, but he didn’t know what was going on… a quick look at the clock that hung overhead told him he was going to be late but…
“Excuse me, sir,” Boruto nearly stumbled over his own feet trying to catch up to them down the hall. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to intrude but… what happened? Is there anything… I can... do?”
The woman ceased her crying and sniffed as she looked at him. She was still young… but the way her eyes puffed and the dark circles under her eyes suggested she had been crying for more than just a few hours. “My… son…” She choked out. “He was… mi-missing and n-now he’s…”
Boruto gaped. Perhaps it was better he didn’t even ask anymore. “I’m… I’m sorry.”
The man wrapped his arms around his wife and gave Boruto a tight smile. “These things just… happen, right?”
He blinked and opened his mouth, but closed it right after. Being a shinobi meant being familiar with loss. But it didn’t mean he liked it or ever got used to it. “I’m so sorry…” it came out as a whisper. The couple walked out of Hokage tower and Boruto stood there for a few moments, feeling his heart weigh a ton. The clock tolled. He was late, and will probably get an earful. But that didn’t matter much to him anymore.
The door opened and he was face to face with his father, Shikamaru, and Sarada. The latter was tapping her foot, but the moment she looked at his eyes, she stopped and her face fell. “Boruto…”
“Sorry, I’m late!” He pulled a fake smile. “Bumped into someone and thought they might need help, ya know? I thought wrong.” He laced his fingers behind his head and grinned. “What’s up?”
Naruto and Shikamaru looked at each other before the latter gave their brief. “The AkaKuro, a notorious gang, was seen terrorizing a small farming village a few miles from here. Your mission is to apprehend them. We will send a group to… clean up the mess after.”
“There have already been reported casualties…” Naruto's voice started wavering, blue eyes burning. “A number of them women and children.”
The two jonin looked at each other before nodding. Shikamaru handed them a scroll, to which Sarada took and tucked it into her pouch. “Understood.”
They left the room without another word. Although Boruto was silent and cooperative, it didn’t mean his heart was as calm. His partner knew that.
As they made their way to the gate, she asked gently, “do you want to talk about it?”
He shook his head. “I… I don’t even know why I’m so affected.”
Her dark eyes softened and she fell in step with him and linked their hands together. “I’m sure it was a lot to make you feel this way.”
Boruto looked at her, and gave her a soft smile and squeezed her hand. “A couple… lost their son. He must have been no older than six, they both looked so young…”
She bit her lower lip and said nothing. Their walk to the gate was silent, and they never released their hold on each other’s hands.
Again. It’s a shame they’re not together. Yes, they’re not together. Not even dating. Just friends.
Best friends, at most. But don’t tell Mitsuki that.
Once they reached the gate. They exchanged looks, gave their hands one last squeeze before putting their masks on and disappearing in a flash, jumping for the trees. Their steps were fast, light, soundless. A passerby would think they were seeing and hearing things should they chance upon them.
There was no time to waste. Boruto could feel his heart pounding, adrenaline filling his body. The smell of fresh leaves and the damp ground exhilarated him. But most of all, he couldn’t allow this gang to hurt anyone. The thought that an innocent little boy could be part of the fray stung his heart. As a shinobi, it was his duty to protect people. He was not going to let anything bad happen.
Sarada zipped by, now she was running a few steps ahead of him. He smiled. It was his duty to protect people, but her most of all. It was his promise and Boruto intended to keep it.
Yes, they really aren’t together. Despite the promises and support for each other. Totally not together.
They’re a duo. An unstoppable duo. But not together.
Keep up.
Sarada jumped off the tree and landed with a soft thud. Boruto landed right next to her and adjusted his cape. Before them was a small village with straw roofs. Screams and cries could be heard in the distance as black smoke rose to the blue sky. Flames licked the roofs and bamboo walls.
Behind the mask, Sarada frowned and her blood boiled. Boruto looked her way, feeling her killing intent flare. Oh damn. She was angry. And not in a he-did-something-stupid way. But more like, this-isn’t-right-and-she-was-going-to-kill-whoever-is-responsible-for-this-carnage kind of way. His blood ran cold.
Note to self, don’t ever anger Sarada if you wanted to live.
“There’s fifteen of them,” she muttered. “We take all fifteen of them.”
He nodded. Not that she was in charge or anything but the way he could feel her anger emanating from her very being, it was best he did exactly as he was told.
“You got it.”
Agreeing to what the angry partner is saying without hesitation? Totally not together.
Boruto counted down. They were going to take action in:
Three
.
.
.
Two
.
One
There was a reason why they’re partners. Not only because they were in sync, but because they were equally ruthless. Moving as fast as lightning, one look in their eyes and their enemies would be frozen with fear.
Enemy shrieks filled the air. Confusion swam in the civilian’s eyes. A mother holding on to her child, dark irises reflecting the orange flames, flashes of yellow lighting, and merciless red eyes.
Boruto and Sarada swung and slashed, expertly telling the difference between friend and foe.
A man came yelling, holding a club up in the air at Sarada. Slash.
Fourteen.
Boruto turned around and came face to face with a Goliath. His sword must have been as big as his leg. The Goliath slammed his sword down, Boruto escaping his blade by an inch. That was too close.
The jonin made two shadow clones to distract the monster. He slashed them away, smoke covering his vision when the clones disappeared. The last thing he saw was a swirling ball of chakra and Boruto’s jogan before he fell to the ground.
Thirteen.
He dusted his cape and turned around to find his partner faced with three enemies. Boruto lifted a brow. Huh. Someone was taking their sweet time. Crossing his arms he stuck his foot out, tripping one of the gang members, Boruto then kicked the back of his head, knocking him out.
Twelve.
Honestly. These guys had no respect. He was trying to watch his not girlfriend at work here! Totally not his girlfriend. Just a partner.
Sarada balled her fist, and with a shout, slammed her fist down on the ground, making rocks fly and the ground split open, engulfing three of the members.
Eleven, ten, nine.
Well, Boruto better hurry the fuck up or else Sarada was going to stay ahead and win the higher score. To be fair, that giant had to got to count as three at the very least. That fucker was huge!
Sarada - 4
Boruto - 2
Six down, nine to go.
Boruto made a bunch of clones and dispersed. Some of them were herding civilians out of the way, while the others used jutsu after jutsu to get rid of the pesky gang that did nothing but hurt this innocent farming village. With every injured woman, and child Boruto saw, his anger only grew.
Eight. Seven.
At his peripheral vision, Sarada was also multi-tasking. Holding on to a child that got caught in the field with one hand, and blocking a katana-wielding foe with a kunai on the other. Finally, she found an opening and aimed right for the jugular.
Six.
This confirmed it, Boruto never wanted to anger Sarada. For real.
Sarada - 5
Boruto - 4
Blood stained Sarada’s mask, making the child cry out in fear. Sarada removed her mask to show her face, trying to calm the girl down. This did nothing for the little girl, as Sarada’s eyes were blood red. The girl tried to escape Sarada’s grasp, and the Jonin was about to put her down but the little girl grabbed on to Sarada’s neck as soon as two other members of the gang came running towards them.
One threw shuriken, the other had a whip. Sarada jumped back, holding fast on the little girl, dodging every single whip and star thrown at her. “Boruto!”
Oh finally. She asked for help. Time to be the savior, now, huh? Boruto smirked and created more clones. Two to jump at the enemy, while his original self came running in from behind, creating a Rasengan.
The two clones disappeared, badly injured by a whip and a knife. Boruto’s Rasengan missed, and his shoulder was grazed by the knife. He grimaced. Not exactly what he had in mind.
The two turned to face him. Knife and whip held at the ready to strike.
This was looking bad.
And then, the Jonin smirked, before ducking down on the ground.
A large fireball engulfed the two. Screams filled the air before they both dropped to the ground. Boruto looked up to reveal his partner. Eyes flaming with fury, Sharingan still activated. “No one hurts my partner,” she declares menacingly.
Boruto removed his mask and gaped at her. Fuck. That was hot. Too hot.
But they’re not together. Don’t forget that. All the heated action, sexual tension, and sincere care they had for each other merits them single. Besides, saving each other and dropping threats like that, doesn't mean a thing.
It's totally not like, a declaration of undying love or anything.
He swallowed hard, didn’t even make a move to get off the ground.
“You need a hand over here?” She asked, walking towards him.
“N-no!” Boruto shook his head frantically. I’m fine. Just—just ah… Give me a sec.”
She raised her brow but turned around and started to jog away, heading back to help other civilians and maybe knock another gangster out.
Lifting himself with his hands, Boruto looked down at his pants and cursed. Apparently, another part of him felt the heat as well. “Now is not the time!” he scolded himself.
In the distance, another manly scream was heard, and Boruto cursed yet again.
Sarada - 8
Boruto - 4
Little Boruto - 1
Getting these kinds of… reactions are perfectly normal when with… friends, ya know? Totally no crush or anything. Just… pure… admiration at one’s… skills. Yeah, that.
And Boruto was losing. Like, embarrassingly losing. Dammit.
Gotta up the game! Not little Boruto though... He needed to chill the fuck down.
After hobbling for a few steps and then getting back in the game, Boruto surveyed the scene before him. The fire engulfed the other side of town, and more and more civilians were running towards the bridge, over the river. In the distance, he could see Sarada’s form, perched on a rooftop, looking for trouble.
Either those in trouble or made trouble. Boruto initially didn’t want to be the first, but recalling how Sarada barbecued those two guys, he definitely didn’t want to be the latter.
Boruto scanned again and found two bodies sneaking up behind Sarada.
Oh no they don’t. Not on his watch.
Chakra concentration. A series of hand seals. Crackling and light emitted from Boruto’s hands.
In a flash, lighting darted towards the two, their own screams the last thing they hear before tumbling to the ground.
Sarada - 8
Boruto - 6
She looked back at him from the roof, a smirk on her face. Her mask was still off. How he loved seeing her face.
Smitten by her beauty? Yeah, no crush here.
Moving along. There was one left.
Boruto made a circling motion with his index and middle finger. His partner nodded and jumped off the roof, running towards the rest of the civilians herding towards the other side of the river.
That last fucker was Boruto’s.
Perhaps in number, Sarada would win. But when they laid down the difficulty level, Boruto always got more points… Most of the time.
A shrill scream came from behind Boruto, making him turn around, kunai up and ready. The enemy was wearing a black and red mask, holding on to a small sword. With ease, Boruto blocked the slash aimed toward his shin and then used his gale palm to blow him away.
The mask came flying off, and Boruto’s blood drained.
It was just a kid.
What was a kid doing with this gang?
Scruffy clothes, messy brown hair, and scrapes on his arms and knees… He didn’t look older than eight or nine. Just a kid Boruto could bump into when he was walking near the academy…
All in all, that made fifteen.
.
.
.
“Good job, you two.” Lee gave them a thumbs up. “We will take it from here!”
“Yeah, you two really didn’t hold back, huh?” Kiba snickered.
Despite his effort to try to lighten things up, it didn’t look like it was working… for Sarada, at least. Killing was part of the occupation but it wasn't something those in the profession liked.
"What about the kid?" Boruto asked sheepishly. "Is he…"
"He's fine," Kiba assured. His eyes shifted from side to side, and Lee seemed to have mirrored the gesture. “No parents, or anything like that… Looks like an orphan and,” He sighed loudly. “It’s going to be a pain trying to figure out what to do with him and all.”
Boruto released a breath of relief. At least he didn’t kill the kid. It all happened so fast that Boruto didn’t even get to assess who he was dealing with. “Good…”
“Beating a kid up?” Sarada smirked. “That’s low, even for you.”
“Hey!” He retorted. “I didn’t know, okay? ‘Sides he was pretty fast.”
Sarada nodded and added teasingly. “Far too much for the great Boruto Uzumaki!”
He stomped his feet and Sarada giggled, running around as he tried to catch her.
Kiba and Lee exchanged a smug look.
Nope. They’re totally not together.
.
.
.
Despite things looking good, and really, when will they ever learn? Things were never good even when it seemed like it.
The duo was given another task, which was to report to the next village. The damage had been extensive and will require some support in the meantime. It wasn’t all that bad, a very low profile mission like this would be a piece of cake except… it was more than a day’s walk away. Neither of them looked forward to sleeping on the forest floor. Just the two of them. Sharing a blanket. Alone.
But hey! They’re just friends, and friends share blankets, right? Nothing couple-y or romantic and it’s not like this was one of those oh-my-god-there-was-only-one-blanket scenarios.
Boruto handed Sarada the scroll containing the full report and they were off. No running this time, just walking. Their chests still felt a little heavy, coming from the cull. Boruto noticed that Sarada was wiping at her hands, despite it being clean. Her thumbs rubbing on her palms were getting harder and harder, her jaw clenching.
For a moment, Boruto thought against reacting, but as he heard her whimper, he closed his eyes and took her hand in his, lacing their fingers together. She didn’t say anything. He only squeezed his hand and looked at the floor as they walked.
It wasn’t uncommon for shinobi to find ways to cope… taking was always a little harder than giving for Sarada but for now, she chose to take the comfort his warm hand offered and Boruto was glad to offer it.
Still not together, though. Stay with me, fam.
After a few minutes of walking along the path, he heard rustling behind them and gave Sarada’s hand a squeeze. Her eyes met his and they gave each other a slight nod. They kept walking. Waiting.
And.
“AAAAAAAA!”
They both let go of each other’s hands and turned around. Swords at the ready. As soon as they saw who their opponent was, their eyes widened.
Boruto put his sword down and groaned. “Oh come ooon!”
It was the little boy. But despite the lack of enthusiasm from the blond, the little boy kept going. That kunai he held was pointed right at Boruto, running full force.
“Aren’t you gonna get that?” Boruto asked Sarada, boredom dripping from his voice.
Her brow lifted. “Excuse me? You were the one lagging behind the score.”
His eyeballs were about to pop out of their sockets. “You kept count?!” Not fair. Only he was supposed to keep count.
Sarada stepped back, a smirk on her lips. “You need the points more than I do.”
With his shoulders slumping and lower lip jutting out, Boruto sheathed his sword and tripped the little boy over. The poor thing stumbled and fell on his face.
Hands on her hips and a scowl on her face, “Did you have to do that?”
His response? Sticking his tongue out at her. Real mature.
Boruto walked over to the kid and poked at his cheek. “Hey, kid, what’re you doing here? You’re supposed to be on the way back to Konoha.”
The little boy got up and tried to bite his finger. Boruto pulled back just in time, and had half a mind to swat this kid away. He only stopped himself because Sarada came behind him to get a good look.
“He looks fine,” Sarada grinned at him and extended her hand to help him up, but instead of accepting her offer, he tried to hit her! “Hey!” She exclaimed and took a step back, a pout on her face.
Boruto sniggered and asked her smugly, “Still think he doesn’t deserve it?”
The two argued for a bit and the child watched on, a twisted and confused look on his face. What were these fools doing?
“Are you, like,” He started, confusion still swimming in his eyes. “Married or something?”
Woah what? Married? No, way. They weren’t even together!
“NO!” The two yelled in sync, faces red and flustered. “WE’RE NOT TOGETHER!”
His boyish features drooped down. “Ya coulda fooled me.”
After a round of bickering, kick blocking (from the kid) and one throw of rock-paper-scissors, a conclusion was made.
The two jonin would drag the kid along to bring the report over to the next village, and then bring him with them back to Konoha. Seems easy enough, right?
Wrong.
“Ouch!” Sarada pried his hands off her hair. The boy insisted to be carried, and because Boruto did not oblige (only his precious little sister was allowed in his arms… well… and maybe Sarada. If she was like… dying or something… or asked... But, whatever. Beside the point!) “S-stop moving! Boruto!” She exclaimed. “Help out, would you?”
He sighed. “This is so lame. We’re jonin, not babysitters.” Alas, he had lost the rock-paper-scissors match. He wanted to go back and drop the kid off with Kiba. But no, Sarada had to win, and she wanted to be more “efficient.” Now they were stuck with a little kid. “Just drop this kid off somewhere, will ya?”
“Renji!” The little boy snapped. “I have a name, and it’s Renji!” In a fit, he began hitting Sarada’s head with closed fists.
This ticked Boruto off. “Hey, knock it off, don’t hurt her!” He plucked the boy off of Sarada’s shoulder and put him back on the ground. But not as gentle as Sarada would have liked.
Heh. Served the kid right.
Renji puffed his cheeks. “See!” He cried. “You are together! If not, you wouldn’t care!”
“NO WE’RE NOT!” the two screamed in unison.
The little boy only raised his brow and smirked at them. “You so are.”
...
A/N: That concludes part 1! I don’t write much adventure/action fics, and I think a lot of you know that. It’s always been a challenge for me, but I hope this turned out okay!
Thank you so much for reading, and yay for BoruSara week! I have a lot more fics coming in the next few days!
Cheers, darling.
