My Review of Dorohedoro

How did I get into this anime? I swear to God, 2020 was weird in every section and with an anime like this, Dorohedoro was made for that fucked up year. I heard the name and immediately thought to myself if Dororo got a weird-ass spin-off or if someone at Netflix is smoking moonrocks.

Let me try to get through this synopsis without getting a headache. So there’s this lizard man named Kaiman. He has the head of a lizard and chomps down on its victim’s heads looking for “the one”. The victim then sees a mysterious human inside Kaiman. And usually the end results of these outcomes are either the victim dies or have their face ripped right off her. Kaiman is assisted by a young girl named by Nikaidou. Her job is to assist Kaiman in finding the person who changed him and give him food and booze. They live in this place called “The Hole”. It’s a gringy, dirty-ass district where the citizens are often test subjects for magic users.

And one of the most powerful of them is simply known as En. He’s kind of the mafia boss of these magic users and has these people like Noi, Shin, Fujita, and Ebisu go on certain missions to experiment on people in the hole or to take out people that are a threat to them. And to describe these people I just mentioned….How can I really? En is a freaky-looking fella that can make mushrooms! Shin is a straight-laced man in black who is partners with Noi, a thick (and I do mean THICC) chick! And then there’s Fujita with the ever-so eccentric Ebisu!

I’ll get to Ebisu later!

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: This here is a Netflix exclusive, so enjoy all the languages this anime has to offer. I personally stuck with the English version. My fortunate ears got to hear Aleks Le and Screamy McYellsALot in the main cast.

Fortune or curse? Actually, this is the first time I’m hearing Aleks Le in a role where he wasn’t a simp or…Zenitsu. Gotta say, I’m fine by this. And then good old Bryce Papenbrook…Not as screamy this time. But stand-out was definitely Christina Vee as Ebisu. In fact, Ebisu is like the best character! Anyways, here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

*Ebisu is played by Christina Vee (known for Rei/Sailor Mars on Sailor Moon [redub], Homura on Madoka Magica, Mio on K-ON, Sakura on Fate/Zero, Darkness on Konosuba, Kotori on Love Live, and Louise on Familiar of Zero)

FAVORITE CHARACTER: I know a lot of the characters are really colorful in a dingy environment. It does seem hard to choose the best character. I mean you’ve got Noi, Shin, Nikaidou, Kaiman…

But the clear winner is Ebisu!

Yeah, no one beats out the randomness that Ebisu brings. Not the androgynous guy that annoys En, not the cockroach that wears sneakers, not the old doctor that looks like a slumdog millionaire, not Kaiman, not anybody! And it’s so hard to choose the best moments of Ebisu. Ebisu dancing in the shark costume, Ebisu with fake breasts, all the random lines Ebisu speaks of, she’s the best!

Although the fake boobs was a bit much, even for her.

SHIPPING: I think the two notable ships go to Shin x Noi and Kaiman x Nikaidou.

I’ll talk about Shin x Noi first. These guys are total partners in crime with quite the healthy appetite. One notable moment I think we all would mention was when Noi was being consumed by some very unstable black powder that belongs to Ebisu, En’s acquaintance had to get some things from Shin because apparently he’s someone Noi cares very much for. And one of the things Shin had to do was think of a special moment the two shared. Maybe I’m reading too much into that one moment due to the fact that neither of them ever said sweet nothings to each other.

And then we got Kaiman and Nikadou. Kaiman has a love for Nikaidou’s food, particularly the gyoza. If Kaiman sees someone talk to Nikaidou (particularly men), Kaiman would get angry. But I think Kaiman is really in love with her food instead of her as the person. But he cares enough for Nikaidou if she’s in trouble, he’ll help her out. For now, they’re just friends. JUST friends!

…

Okay, and that one scene where Ebisu chooses Fujita to be partners with was pretty cute.

OVA: There are six short episodes available to watch on Netflix as well. These are just side-stories featuring many different stories. We do get a few good ones including Nikaidou obtaining the shop and the day Kaiman was introduced to gyoza. Me, I’m always entertained when Ebisu is involved in some kooky way.

And then we get weird ones involving the Gyoza fairy.

Because of course!

ENDING: Well…let’s get through this enigmatic brain-fart.

We learn quite a bit each episode involving the mystery around Kaiman and many of the other colorful characters. Most notably is that Nikaidou is living in the hole despite being a magic user. But Kaiman seems to be cool with her and I don’t think he even really brings it up, so that made her worry all for naught. Then you have that gentleman that’s been inside of Kaiman’s mouth since the beginning of the series. After being recreated by En’s mushroom magic, Risu made some discoveries including that he’s really dead, he was betrayed by someone close to him, and that Ebisu’s magic had something to do with it all.

Kaiman ends up leaving his home in the hole without a word to anyone and goes to the world of the magic users to get some answers. But Kaiman ends up there during a four-day festival known as the Blue Night. Thankfully, Kaiman really didn’t do that much damage when there for the festival. It wasn’t until after the festival that En made his move. He has been saving himself for a special person with special magic to become his partner.

And he has set his sights on Nikaidou. So he kidnaps her and her friends from the hole, imprisons them, and forces Nikaidou into a contract where they both literally swap pieces of flesh from their body. With that, Nikaidou is under En’s control and will do as he says. Thankfully, Nikaidou’s friends that were imprisoned by En were saved by En’s comrade Shin due to knowing him. So we don’t have to worry about them! As for Kaiman, he ran into Nikaidou and things didn’t go well.

Nikaidou says she won’t return to the hole with Kaiman and he was ready to take her by force, which resulted in Nikaidou fighting back. Nikaidou ends up back to her senses after a mysterious person stabs her and a jealous acquaintance of En’s came upon Nikaidou’s near-death body to take her contract that was inside her. Once Nikaidou was feeling better, she went to find Kaiman, but Kaiman was very defiant of her.

Yeah, it seemed like Kaiman’s been keeping quiet about his feelings over Nikaidou being a magic user until now. He even goes as far as to chomping down on her head to see what the man inside Kaiman says. Naturally, “she is not the one”, but Nikaidou recognizes the man as Risu. Nikaidou and Kaiman end up together in hiding from En’s men. She explained that she has a rare kind of magic that caused the death of a friend and so Nikaidou swore off doing magic and went to the hole to try and be like a human. She swears to stay friends with Kaiman and never use her magic again.

So Kaiman and Nikaidou are hiding out. And En is with a fake Nikaidou that’s really a flamboyant guy that really loves En.

The rest is hidden in chaos. And that is Dorohedoro!

Okay, you cannot leave us hanging like that. We gotta get a second season to this! How the hell does Nikaidou know about Risu? Is En going to eventually catch up to Nikaidou and Kaiman? This story is so hard to describe that you just have to watch it yourself. It is bat-crap crazy and great at the same time. It’s gory, gritty, but…no it’s just gory and gritty. But it’s still awesome! And when I mean it’s gory, there are body parts that are chopped up and the dude is still talking. People do die too! So, I can’t recommend it to people with weak stomachs. I gotta give credit to the creator, artists, background designers, everyone in those departments. These were out of the world designs and characters.

But seriously, can we please get a second season to this? This is just the beginning! Right?! That’s what it says at the beginning of each episode during the opening sequence. That means that there’s a butt-load more material that we don’t know of yet. God, all good things leave me in such suspense!

Brainstorming my Otabek backstory (REALLY LONG)

First child born to a quiet, reserved, high-strung, workaholic man (idk what his job is yet but he works A Lot and makes a lot of money) and a kind, strong, loving, outspoken woman

His mother has some kind of health problem (which I have yet to determine) meaning she can’t work a 9-to-5 so she mostly does housework as well as some kind of work-from-home thing because she wants to contribute to the family even though his dad’s salary would be plenty enough for them (part of the reason he works so hard is to pay for her medical treatments at private facilities since the public one kind of sucks so she probably feels guilty for that) (and also she just hates not contributing)

They had plans to have more kids but her health is declining and it isn’t really feasible anymore

Otabek discovers at a young age that he loves ice skating and his parents take him to the local rink on weekends so he can skate for fun

Otabek’s dad worries that Otabek should be focusing on developing skills that will prepare him for a career but his mom insists that it’s important to have passion without pressure and to save career stuff for when he’s ready to think about it

This kid is like 5 btw and these are the things his dad is worried about

Yes he is Like That

Over the years, Otabek’s mom’s health continues to decline, to the point where she can’t keep up her job or do a lot of the housework she used to do, so Otabek has to do it instead and take care of her while his dad works

She tries to do as much as she can for herself but even little Otabek can see most of it’s just not possible at this point

Eventually Otabek’s mom dies

This sucks for everyone involved

Otabek’s dad becomes even MORE reserved (can you imagine) and also meaner, probably

Okay I’m gonna go back and say Otabek’s mom also loved music and would sing songs to him all the time and they would have dance parties in the kitchen together and laugh and etc and he never really had a talent for music himself but he loved listening to it with his mom

Anyway she dies and life sucks

I’m gonna say Otabek is like… 9? 8? 9?

Otabek’s dad remarries WAY too fast

To this woman who’s like the polar opposite of Otabek’s mom but also similar in weird ways

She’s got three kids and she’s divorced

She doesn’t work and she gets support from her family (parents, siblings, etc.) but she wants more money so that she can live more comfortably

She’s outspoken but rather than in a passionate way like Otabek’s mom she’s just loud and cantankerous and complains all the time

And like yes, on one hand it’s hard to raise three kids and also work

But on the other, SHE’s the one who divorced her husband because he got sick of waiting on her hand and foot and tried to stick up for himself and find a compromise and work together as a couple

She didn’t like that

So she likes Otabek’s dad because he has money and will just go to work and leave her alone

And she makes Otabek do everything her ex-husband used to do

And every once in a while she’ll cook a meal or clean a room or something but complain all the while and make a huge deal out of how hard it is for her to do all these things at the same time as raising her kids right

Meanwhile the kids are like, absolute terrors

They’re just totally out of control

I haven’t decided on genders for them yet

The oldest is a total know-it-all, super sarcastic and critical, thinks everyone is beneath them

If Otabek is 10 then this kid is like 8

They boss around the younger kids in the spitting image of their mother

Then the middle kid is just. Loud

Loud and rambunctious and likes to wreck things and somehow always gets mud everywhere even when it hasn’t rained in weeks

And they fight with the oldest kid a lot but the oldest kid is playing mental 3D chess while the middle kid is just trying to brute force their way through arguments

And usually the oldest ends up winning because they’re too good at making people feel bad about themselves

If Otabek is 10 and the oldest is 8 then the middle kid is 7

And really all they want is attention

But all they know how to do is Yell

and Smash

and Mud

So then we have the youngest kid

And they’re significantly younger than the other two

If Otabek is 10 and the oldest is 8 and the middle is 7 then I wanna say the youngest is 4

And dude they’re just fucking terrified

They spend most of their time hiding from everyone else and trying not to cry

But dude this kid is a genius though

And they’re very angry but they don’t outwardly show it

Instead they stage pranks (increasingly elaborate with age) on whoever they’re mad at and frames the other two kids and usually those two end up fighting too much to realize what actually happened and the youngest just snickers to themself in their room

This kid is the only member of this family that Otabek ever really forms a bond with

At first he doesn’t know exactly how to deal with them

He figures the other two kids out pretty quick: placate and then avoid at all costs

But the youngest is like

Just kinda a scared little creature

So he just kinda coexists with them at first

And then eventually he catches onto their pranks

And the kid is scared he’s gonna get mad but really Otabek is just impressed

And so they kinda bond over that

But like okay so

The stepmom makes Otabek take care of the kids basically

And one day he’s sick of it

His stepmom orders him to do something for the youngest kid and Otabek just snaps

And he’s like “Why should I do anything for them? They’re not even my sibling!”

And ofc the kid overhears this and is hurt

And Otabek tries to apologize but by now (I figure Otabek is well into teenhood at this point) this kid is way too smart and is like “No you’re right. I’m not. You shouldn’t have to deal with me.” And stops talking to Otabek

And it’s a whole thing

ALSO okay okay okay so

I don’t have an explanation for the moving from country to country yet BUT

I figure Otabek gets his motorcycle as a way of getting the fuck away from this crazy family

He’s sick of just being treated like a servant and he wants independence and shit

ALSOOOO okay so for the skating part

The stepmom is DEFINITELY not cool with him just fucking around on the ice for fun

She’s like “if this kid is gonna waste my precious time over at that stupid rink then he better be damn good”

So between that and the pressure Otabek’s dad is already inclined to put on him, they end up forcing Otabek into competitive skating

So that’s why he starts a year early, they lie about his age because it’s already quite late for him to start training and they want him to be Good

And that’s why he can’t keep up with the juniors

Because he’s never been trained

And that’s why he’s not good at ballet because that was just never his inclination and he never was taught otherwise

So that’s why he gets put in the novice class aaaaaaa fmwgwfywshdhwwhnd

And like

His stepmom probably has delusions of grandeur

She probably wants him to be the hero of Kazakhstan lmfao she’s probably the one who comes up with that whole concept

And takes the local interviews and stuff

Because lord knows Otabek’s dad doesn’t wanna talk to any fuckin reporter

So Otabek’s stepmom takes all the credit and shapes this story about how this amazing little boy came into her life and she did everything she could to support his success and she’s so proud of him and blah blah blah blah

And she’s like “My little Beka [she doesn’t call him that at home] is gonna be the hero of Kazakhstan!”

And so he feels kinda obligated to accept this and fight for it and like the stepmom is probably also really mean to him about it

Like “it’s the only thing you’re any good for so you better start getting real fuckin good”

And like even though he hates her he’s still an impressionable kid so he kinda believes her

And his dad doesn’t disagree with anything she says

He doesn’t outright agree either, but he just kinda lets it happen

And that’s enough to fuck a kid up

OHHHH OH OH OH OH ANDDDDDD

I bet he fucking

I bet Otabek goes to his dad and he’s like “Mom always said I should have fun” or whatever

And the dad is probably like “yeah, when you were a kid. But you’re becoming a man now [this kid is like 11 btw]. And if your mother could see how useless you still are, she’d be so disappointed.”

And that probably fucks Otabek the fuck UP

And he remembers how hard she used to work and feels like a failure

And so now he’s motivated extra hard to do it

And if he can be the hero of Kazakhstan then he can be her hero

And he’ll make her proud

RIGHT okay so then last thing

That is where the DJing comes in

That’s his escape

He works hard all day training and taking care of the kids and his stepmom and so whenever he gets the chance he speeds off on his bike and goes to clubs

Because it reminds him of the fun he used to have dancing with his mother

But he feels awkward and alone there without her and without any friends and he’s just like

“This isn’t right”

“I don’t belong here”

“But I could”

“I could be the one with the power to make all the people dance”

“Wouldn’t that be the ultimate connection”

“Just like Mom used to do when she’d sing her silly songs and I’d twirl around on the kitchen tile”

“Wouldn’t that be such a powerful thing”

And so that’s why he becomes a DJ

Yeah okay the end

And like obviously he meets Yuri and sees how hard that kid works and he’s like “wow this guy gets it” bc he too works so fucking hard every day

And yeah

I am excited to start writing again lmfao

I am very happy with where this backstory is taking me

“Beka,” Yuri said, “What are you doing right now?”

“I’m on lunch,” Otabek said, “What’s going on?”

“Tell your boss you have to leave. I’ll be there in twenty minutes,” Yuri stated, “Meet me at the construction gate.”

“Yura, what the hell is going on?” he demanded.

“It’s Mom, Beka,” Yuri finally said, hearing Otabek’s sharp inhale, “She collapsed while the nurse was taking her to the bathroom during chemo. Her blood pressure is extremely low and her oxygen saturation is way below normal. They admitted her to the hospital and are doing tests. The hospital called me when they couldn’t reach you.”

Okay sorry this is going to be a long one because I am passionate about the anime boys that deserve more love.

There is really no method to my ordering and these are just personal opinions.

1. Takeda Ittetsu- Haikyu: This is a hard pill for some of us to swallow but no matter how much you love the Karasuno boys, they would be nothing without him. Ittetsu is honestly just amazing. He would be one of those teachers that always goes above and beyond for their students. Although he had no experience in volleyball he worked SO HARD. He did not let his pride takeover and sought out additional help with coaching his students. He DID NOT give up. He was at Ukai’s shop constantly asking for his help. The scariest part is, Takeda Sensei knew exactly how to get Ukai to agree (practice against Nekoma) and orchestrated it perfectly. I still love him. He needs more love and recognition.

2. Iida Tenya- Boku no (My) Hero Academia: I did not realize how awesome Iida is until I watched the Heroes Rising movie (sorry I have been non stop gushing about it ever since I first saw it). *Spoilers* When the Villains attacked, Iida handled things perfectly. He did not panic, and he immediately made important decisions. He delegated the hell out of the situation and the students. Grouping them together based one their abilities and assigning roles. He is also there with moral support and reminding heroes what it means to be heroes.

3. Yut Lung- Banana Fish: Yut Lung isn’t particularly my favorite character but I do feel that he is underappreciated solely because he is such a complex character. It is often difficult to understand what he is thinking? Is he a bad guy? Is he good? Is he bad? He is bold and ambitious and willing to dispose of those he has no use for. He can act any part.

4. Iwatani Noafumi- The Rising of the Shield Hero: Naofumi is the protagonist of the series. He has encountered several unfavorable situations that leaves him a pariah. He has only a few loyal companions. I don’t know if it is just because not enough people have seen it but I almost never hear anyone talk about it??? It was so good. And why is Naofumi not on your list of husbandos??? He’s gorgeous, intrinsically good, although he pretends he is displeased and a mean guy, he actually helps people. He is GOOD.

5. Aburame Shino- Naruto: I know that I am totally being biased here because Shino is MY BOY from Naruto. He is totally that outcast weirdo but I AM NOT MAD. Remember when he fought Torune, his ANBU cousin, and WON. Shino is not as weak as you would think. I know the movies aren’t canon but the movie “bonds,” Shino literally sunk an entire enemy ship without breaking a sweat and it took like 2 seconds. Stop hating on my baby bug boo. I also hate how he looks like Robocop in Boruto but I think it is AMAZING that Shino became a teacher. He has grown so much since we first met him in Naruto.

6. Otabek Altin-Yuri!!! on Ice: Otabek is a skater from Kazakhstan. He doesn’t get much screen time but the moments with him are great. He aids Yurio in escaping fan girls just so they can have a hear to heart. Yurio is a little brat (and my fav character) and it is nearly impossible for him to make/keep friends. Otabek reveals that they met during childhood and that he always admired Yurio and they became friends. It was real beautiful when Yurio cheered for him at the skating competition because moral support from Yurio is unheard of. Otabek is basically Yurio’s character development catalyst and I AM LIVING FOR IT. Also one of my OTPs and if you have not already seen the “Welcome to the Madness” PV for Yuri!!! on Ice, do yourself a favor and watch it.

7. Mumen Rider- One Punch Man: Mumen Rider, the class C hero is never going to be anyone’s favorite hero. He is not going to be seen saving the world from alien monsters. But you know what else he won’t be seen doing? GIVING UP. He races around on his bike doing the right thing. He puts his life on the line to do everything and anything he can to ensure safety for those around him. He knows he does not stand a chance against these monsters but if he tries just a little harder, if he keeps on going, he can maybe make even a small difference. For example, distracting the monster from attacking the town and citizens while also buying time for a hero, that is capable of destroying the monster, to arrive. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS. AND HE NEVER COMPLAINS.

8.Zenitsu- Demon Slayer: Zenitsu, from what I can tell, universally isn’t admired as much as the other characters, rightfully so. Zenitsu spends the majority of the time crying, running away from his problems, and engaging in awkward social situations, but let’s be honest, are we not? He is relatable. He is afraid to die, he is afraid of things he does not know, he is afraid of things he isn’t sure he is strong enough to defeat. he is afraid BECAUSE THINGS ARE SCARY. But you know what, even as he is shaking in fear he always comes through. He finds motivation or inspiration and it fuels him forward. I also think the artwork surrounding him is beautiful. Also let’s not forget how he saved Nezuko, before he even knew she was a pretty girl. Zenitsu endured a damaging beating from Inosuke to prevent any harm coming to Tanjiro’s traveling box (that happened to contain Nezuko). Zenitsu even admitted knowing a demon was in there but his friend, Tanjiro, said the box is more important than his life and did whatever needed to be done to protect his precious friend’s important items. ZENITSU IS ALSO A TOTAL BOSS WHEN HE SLEEP FIGHTS.

Okay, I’ll stop there. This took forever to put into words lol. I am sorry if I left out any of your babies. These are my opinions based on animes that I have seen. I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Yuuri’s eyes were still red and raw from crying when he showed up at Minako’s house a week after the docks, feeling fragile and exhausted. He didn’t want to be there. He wanted to be curled in the blankets in his hotel room with a tub of ice cream but he knew that if he didn’t go to Minako, she would just come to him.

His fingers clenched tight around his cup of tea as he waited in Minako’s sitting room, Victor’s last words to him ringing in his ears.

“Goodbye, Yuuri.”

Yuuri pressed his eyes shut, heart aching in his chest.

Victor should have shot him. Yuuri had expected him to shoot him, to get rid of the witness… but he hadn’t. He’d let him live. He’d let him go...

“Yuuri-”

Yuuri jumped to his feet as he heard Minako’s footsteps a second before her voice, setting his cup down on the coffee table with a clatter. He hadn’t seen her in over a year now.

She froze in the doorway the second she saw his face though, eyes going wide at his drawn face. “Yuuri, what are you doing here?”

Yuuri sucked in a shaky breath, tongue darting out to wet his dry lips.

“I-I had to see you...”

He blinked fast to keep his eyes dry. He couldn’t cry now. He wasn’t a child that needed comforting anymore.

He’d been given a job.

“What’s taking so long?” Minako asked, stepping forward with shrewd eyes. Of course, she’d know something was wrong - Yuuri wasn’t supposed to be here until the mission was done and she’d know that that wasn’t the case... “You’ve been assigned this job for a year now - surely that’s more than enough time to kill Victor Nikiforov?”

Yuuri sucked in a sharp breath, a barb going through him hearing Victor’s name again. He moved his hands behind his back, hiding his clenched fists and digging his nails into his palms to distract himself from the sting in the corner of his eyes. He didn’t want her to see him weak.

“You don’t understand,” he said, voice just about steady. It was nothing short of a miracle... “It’s not that simple.”

“What do you mean?” Minako’s eyes narrowed. “You got the information we needed to take his business months ago. We don’t need him alive anymore.”

Yuuri’s stomach twisted sickeningly. He’d almost trained himself to forget his mission...

“He trusts you now. You even live with him!” Minako folded her arms tightly across her chest. “It shouldn’t be hard at all.”

It wasn’t supposed to be. It had been the perfect plan - seduce Victor and get close enough to steal his business, then dispose of him to drive the rest of the Bravta off of Japanese soil. It had been Minako to suggest Yuuri would be perfect for the job, his relative obscurity working in their favour. Victor would never see it coming that his new lover was actually the youngest son of a Yakuza boss.

“That’s the thing…” Yuuri took a deep breath, unable to meet his mentor’s eye. “I trust him too.”

Minako went stiff. “What are you saying?”

When Yuuri didn’t answer, she took matters into her own hand - literally! Yuuri gasped as she closed the distance between them and cupped his chin, jerking his head up. Her gaze bore into his, unescapable. Yuuri knew it was hopeless…

“Oh…” she breathed, eyes going wide as she understood. Fear seeped into her gaze. “Yuuri, no ... please don’t tell me...”

Yuuri reached up and grasped Minako’s wrist, fingers digging tight into her skin. He didn’t pull her away though. He didn’t deny it.

“I tried my best to stop it…” he blinked, eyes blurry.

And he had. He had really tried, knowing how the mission had to end, knowing what he had to do. He’d tried desperately not to get attached… in the end though, it hadn’t been enough.

Minako shook her head. “Yuuri, please don’t say it...”

“He cares about me!” Yuuri stopped bothering trying to hold back the tears now, knowing it was a futile battle. He felt the wetness stream down his cheeks, helpless to stop it. “He’s not like everybody says he is. He’s different, if only you got to know him-”

“I don’t want to hear it!”

It was supposed to have been simple. Victor was supposed to have been a monster driven with greed that would be easy to kill … but he simply wasn’t.

Minako let Yuuri go with a hiss, eyes like razors as they bore into Yuuri. For the first time Yuuri had ever seen it, she looked terrified. He guessed it was her life on the line as much as his... “I can’t watch you throw your life away like this!”

It would be the end of everything.

His father might save him from death, but he wouldn’t have a life anymore. He’d be shut away, hidden away in shame. He’d never be free.

He’d never see Victor again.

That thought stopped the tears, stopped the quivering of his lip. Victor had no idea that they were even coming! He really wouldn’t stand a chance, long dead with all the information that Yuuri had leaked back to his family over the last year undercover. Yuuri might get exile - Minako probably wouldn’t be so lucky, family friend or not. She’d be desperate to spill Victor’s blood for his father.

Yuuri wouldn’t let it happen - but the dark look in Minako’s eyes told him that it wasn’t up for discussion.

“I won’t let you kill him,” he said, strong enough to surprise himself.

He’d hoped to negotiate. To set the record straight. To explain that Victor wasn’t trying to invade their territory like they’d thought, but Minako clearly wasn’t in the mood to listen.

He let his fists fall back to his sides, still feeling the bite of the gold band on his finger that Victor had given him on their wedding day. It hadn’t all been a lie. He was never supposed to have gotten in so deep, so bound to him, but that was real. The vows that he’d said that day had been real for him.

It didn’t matter if Victor had used him too, if Victor hadn’t loved him back. He still didn’t want to see him dead.

Minako’s jaw set, her eyes hardening. “I know.”

Yuuri saw her eyes flash too late.

He whipped round to the open door behind him just a heartbeat before the butt of the gun slammed into his temple. His vision swam, legs giving out beneath him. His fingers burned as his hand swept the tea off the table as he went down, limp as a doll.

His eyes were still rolling back in his skull as he caught a glimpse of his sister standing over him, gun in hand.

“I’m sorry, little brother,” she said.

In the Bravta headquarters, a guard barged into the Pakhan’s office. “Boss-”

“What?!”

Victor snapped up from his papers, headache throbbing and temper short. His eyes were bloodshot. He hadn’t been sleeping well since that night at the docks...

He recognised that guard that had burst through his door in a heartbeat though, irritation melting away into sharp concern - it was Yuuri’s surveillance guard.

He’d hoped that breaking Yuuri’s heart would have been enough to keep him away and safe, but he hadn’t wanted to take any chances. Yuuri was still a target. He still knew too much. If he had been anybody else, Victor never would have let him live. But he was Yuuri… and even if he had ruined things between them, there was no way he’d leave his husband undefended.

The dark look in Otabek’s eyes told Victor all he needed to know long before he opened his mouth though.

His blood ran cold.

“It’s Yuuri,” Otabek said. “He’s missing.”

Mafia AU

“Altin.. the Boss’ll see you now.”

Otabek stood, adjusting his leather jacket on his shoulders as he followed the door man past the double wooden doors that lead into the ‘Office’. Behind a heavy wooden desk at the far end of a long room, flanked on either side by some of the Elite sat an older, balding man, fingers laced together. Fierce, knowing eyes watched every step he took.

It wasn’t the men standing behind the Boss that worried him, despite being known, skilled assassins and killers. The power radiated not from their presence, but from the man sitting in the leather seat between them.

“Otabek. Come. Sit..” Hands that had seen the hard labor of work in youth gestured to one of only two other chairs in the room, placed facing the desk.

Otabek did as he was asked, sinking cautiously into the chair – body tense and ready for anything. If today was the day they decided he was done, he wasn’t going to go without a fight.

“I’d ask you to relax,” the Boss started, “But I can see that won’t do any good.” The Boss sank back in his seat, arms crossing in thought. “Good. You’re ready go take me and my boys on if that’s what it comes to. You don’t stand a chance. We both know it. But you’ll try anyway.”

Otabek tensed further, but tried to remain as outwardly calm as possible.

“That. Is exactly the kind of man I’m looking for.”

Otabek raised an eyebrow but remained respectfully silent.

“I have heard a lot of good things about you. Not much of a talker, but you get your job done at any cost. I can see you’re not afraid of taking on the impossible and you aren’t a quitter. These… are fine qualities in a man. And you’re loyal – it seems until you think your life might be under threat.” The boss gestured at Otabek’s current posture. “Then you’re willing to take as many with you as you can. You don’t trust too easily – that’s good, too.”

Otabek’s jaw tensed, but he waited.

“I have a job for you. Something I think.. you in particular might be able to handle.”

Otabek killed the engine, pushed the kick stand down on his bike and pulled his helmet off outside a lavish apartment complex. His dark leathers were in stark contrast to the pristine white walls surrounding the gated community. He could hear the running water of fountain just out of sight and the green fronds of a manicured garden just inside peaked over the edges of the walls.

He took a deep breath, hung his helmet on the handlebars and palmed the keycard in his hand.

He wasn’t sure if this was punishment or praise…

Otabek slid off the bike, pressed the card to the sensor and stepped into the tiny oasis that was a central courtyard overlooked by the second story of each apartment, heavy rod-iron railing of the balconies breaking up the white lines of the building.

Instinctively, he reached just inside his jacket and flipped the safety off his gun, before following the winding path through the garden to the back of the property, where the largest apartment sat on its own small patch of land.

The card allowed him past the second gate, surrounding the home.

He paused one more time, before gently rapping a knuckle on the door.

“Plisetsky? I was told they would text ahead. It’s Altin… your new bodyguard.”

mafia hcs: the beginning

inspired by @kawaiilo-ren but also a ton of my own ideas because my dream job has always been mafia trophy wife and this isn’t my first time at the mob boss hc rodeo.

yuri is, of course, the heir of the the russian mafia, under his grandfather. otabek was hired at nineteen to be sixteen year old yuri’s bodyguard because he’s been making trouble for himself and the mob.

though yuri was attracted to otabek at first sight, he hated him for quite awhile simply out of spite. he’s not a child. he’s the grandson of the most powerful man in russia. he doesn’t need to be protected.

otabek is very much the silent type at first, only speaking when he needs to. when yuri starts to get curious about the man watching him, he begins starting conversations and slowly chipping away at otabek’s resolve.

over time, they form a fierce sort of friendship. all friendships are fierce in the mob, where danger is pulsating in the air. otabek has always taken his job seriously, has always been attracted to yuri, but he’s starting to fall in love and this love is life or death now. he knows he would throw himself in front of a bullet for yuri in more ways than one.

for so long, otabek denies himself and denies yuri’s advances because he knows the danger of falling in love with the son of the bratva. but yuri flirts relentlessly, teases to no end, and otabek only has so much self control to fight off the things he wants.

yuri’s eighteenth birthday is the first time otabek doesn’t pull away from one of the kisses yuri is constantly trying to sneak in the back corner of the club. he lets yuri kiss him and when yuri realizes he isn’t pulling back, he just melts. he kisses otabek hard, lowering himself down into a straddle over one of otabek’s thighs. he’s shaking, whining, begging, pleading into otabek’s ear in a breathy whisper. but otabek won’t fuck him tonight. despite being a dangerous man, otabek is sentimental and he wants his first time with yuri be special, not just a messy fuck built on years of sexual tension in a dirty club bathroom. so, he just grips yuri’s hips hard a he grinds against otabek’s leg, biting marks into yuri’s skin that scream “you’re mine”. that night, otabek told him he loved him. yuri blushed, hiding his face in otabek’s chest, and said it back.

for yuri’s birthday, otabek gets yuri his first gun. it’s one of otabek’s, the one that yuri would meticulously clean for him, the one he would drag his tongue across the barrel of when he was done, making sure otabek was watching.

otabek taught yuri to shoot, but that day ended with them kissing each other hard on the shooting range, stumbling into yuri’s bedroom, avoiding all of the guards and servants. the way yuri aimed with such steady hands, the way he smiled when he hit his target, and the way otabek imagined him looking, covered in blood, sent him over. otabek took yuri to fucking pieces that night. despite being a trouble making teenager, yuri was still a virgin. how could he not be, when he was being constantly watched? otabek was yuri’s first and yuri, as vicious a little kitten as he is, couldn’t help but cry from the intensity of it all.
