actually no i WILL elaborate re: #and the punchline is: salem’s playing the dragon variation (here)
ok. so. rwby’s chess motif is chiefly there to foreshadow and then articulate the paradigm shift that occurs between salem and cinder in V8; insofar as any other characters are involved in the chess symbolism it is largely in service of clarifying what’s being said about those two. but first we have to talk about
✨chess theory✨
for context. some basics. briefly.
if you’re not a Chess Person you probably have at least a vague idea of what the pieces are, how they move, and their relative value. but that’s as good a place as any to start, so:
a chessboard has numbered ranks (rows) 1-8 and lettered files (columns) a-h. you can notate a specific square this way: a1 is the dark square in the bottom left corner of the board. white’s pieces start on 1, black’s on 8. the queens start on the d file, the kings on e. pieces that start on a,b,c are called the queen’s or the queenside and likewise pieces that start on f,g,h are the king’s or kingside.
from the edge of the board in, the pieces go on in this order: rook -> knight -> bishop. then the eight pawns start in ranks 2 and 7.
pawns (P) can move 1 square forward and capture pieces that are 1 square diagonally in front of them (so a pawn on the light square e4 can move to the dark square e5 if it’s empty, or capture a piece occupying the light squares d5 or f5). from their starting position only they are allowed to advance 2 squares if both are empty. they also have a special and highly situational pawn capture (en passant) that Isn’t Important but i have to mention it because it’s really fucking funny to catch the unwary with. look it up. they cannot move backwards, but if a pawn travels all the way across the board to reach the 8th/1st rank they can be promoted to a piece of the player’s choosing (knight, bishop, rook, or queen)—usually queen but there are certain circumstances where a knight is preferable.
rooks (R) move in straight lines vertically or horizontally across any number of unoccupied squares. if they land on an occupied square the piece is captured. rooks also have a special move they can perform with the king if 1. neither the rook nor king have moved yet, 2. the king is not in check, 3. the king would not move through or into check, and 4. every square between the rook and the knight is empty. this move is called castling and it moves the king two squares in the direction of the rook whilst jumping the rook over the king into the light square adjacent to the king’s new position. so if white castles kingside, the king moves e1 to g1 and the rook moves h1 to f1; if white castles queenside the king moves to c1 and the rook moves a1 to d1.
knights (N) move in an L shape (1 square either horizontally or vertically, then 2 squares at a right angle to the first direction, or 2 then 1), jumping over any pieces in between. if they land on an occupied square the piece is captured; pieces they jump over are not captured.
bishops (B) move in straight lines diagonally across any number of unoccupied squares, capturing a piece if they land on it. both players have a dark square and a light square bishop; bishops can never move onto squares of a different color from their starting square.
queens (Q) can move and capture like a rook or a bishop; so, in a straight line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally across any number of unoccupied squares.
kings (K) can move 1 square in any direction (outside of castling). if an adjacent square is occupied they can capture the piece. the king has the unique restriction that it cannot move into a square where it would be under attack, so if there is a white rook on b3 and the black king is on c2, b2 and c3 are not legal moves.
a piece is attacked when it occupies a square that could be taken by an opposite-color piece; if the king is attacked it is in check and the player must use their turn to get the king out of check (by moving the king, blocking the path of attack with a different piece, or capturing the attacking piece). the goal of chess is to checkmate the opponent by forcing the king into an inescapable check; you do not win chess by capturing the king, you win by trapping the king in a position in which your opponent has no legal moves.
(if the king is not in check but one player has no legal moves, the game is a stalemate and ends in a draw.)
so it’s not about overpowering the enemy… :)
anyway. chess pieces are conventionally given relative valuations (standard is P=1, N=3, B=3, R=5, Q=9) for the purpose of having a loose rule-of-thumb to quickly assess positions during a game. but—and this is the important part—piece valuations are only rough approximations of the actual strength any given piece might have on the board, because how strong or weak a piece might be is contingent on a lot of things. the queen isn’t always the strongest piece on the board; pawns are extremely important in the opening and can be really strong in the endgame. etc
so! chess strategy and tactics! basic ideas:
space—that’s how much of the board you control—is very important. space can be evaluated by counting up how many squares a player currently occupies or has attacked (including empty squares that an opposing piece cannot safely move into because they are in an attack line) on the opposing side of the board.
control of the center—d4,e4,d5,e5, the four squares in the center of the board—is achieved by developing pieces to attack those squares. controlling the center is the goal of the opening because the player with the strongest control over those four squares has the advantage in
initiative, which belongs to whichever player is able to attack in a way that their opponent has no choice but to respond, like putting a king in check or otherwise forcing the opponent to defend rather than develop their own position.
placing one piece on a square from which it can attack a square currently occupied by a friendly piece defends the friendly piece; if the opponent captures a defended piece and the defender captures the captor that’s called an exchange. a piece in a defensive position to more than one other piece, or a piece under more than one attack, is overworked and therefore weak.
the strongest piece on the board at any given time is a piece that: 1. can attack through the center, 2. is defended, 3. is not overworked, 4. is not closed in by friendly pieces, and 5. is able to capture, put the opponent king in check, or defend another piece doing those things.
ok! this:
Tumblr media
is the setup for an opening called the sicilian defense, dragon variation. black has just moved the kingside knight’s pawn to g6 and will on the next turn move the kingside bishop to g7, then castle kingside. this is notoriously one of if not the sharpest openings—a risky, aggressive, highly tactical play. if you open with the dragon your intention is to spend the rest of the game attacking and counterattacking; ideally you keep the bishop on g7 and knight on f6 until you can capture with the knight and reveal the bishop’s attack up the long diagonal. in this game the fianchettoed bishop on g7 is THE strongest and most strategically and tactically important piece on the black side, to the point that every major line for white to counter the dragon aims to weaken the bishop.
ok done talking chess theory now
back to rwby:
in the essentials, the chess symbolism is constructed around the metaphorical game between salem (playing black) and ozma (playing white); the white king is the relics and the black king is remnant freed from the brothers, basically. and the black queen—
—isn’t cinder.
the black queen is a virus written by arthur watts which cinder deploys in tandem with the grimm and the white fang to shatter beacon’s defenses and keep ozpin’s guardians pinned down while she captures the fall maiden and then takes down ozpin.
and that’s the dragon. conceptually. cinder is the bishop fianchettoed on g7 biding her time until the black queen, knights, and pawns launch the attack on white’s queenside defenses and open the long diagonal for her to go in for the kill.
the same setup happens at haven except that this time cinder’s chief opponent is raven, who can see what cinder is doing and counters by baiting her into a more vulnerable position with a decoy and then whacking her.
and then it happens again in atlas, twice, first when cinder plants the black queen in ironwood’s office to force the winter maiden into the open and second when she remembers how this play actually works and gets watts and neo to tear open the line for her before she forces checkmate.
ironwood is the white queen, and he believes salem is the black queen—hence them being positioned as such in the V8 opener. he sees the black queen as salem’s calling card; ruby connects it to cinder. but the black queen is watts—his virus, his icon—and salem identifies herself in both 3.12 and 8.1 as the one playing black; beacon was the first move and it’s her game to win. cinder “holds the key to [salem’s] victory” and cinder is “more valuable to [salem] than a pawn,” so much so that salem values her more highly than the notionally higher-value queen.
because salem plays the sicilian defense, dragon variation. and. well,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…cinder’s the dragon.

♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
You looked down at the map that had come in the envelope the Council had handed you, studying the faded landmarks that your ancestor had drawn decades ago. The first Gifted Y/L/N, you had concluded upon a second look when you noticed your family name signed on the bottom right corner. It matched the writing in the journal you had found anyway.
But, there were few, and each one distanced far from your final destination. You had been forced to walk (a rule set in a letter that had come with the map) through town, and head toward the Angelos burned estate until you were in the section of the kingdom between the Angelos and the Lee’s.
You had entered the forest then, where the landmarks were nothing you had seen before. Twisted branches and roots protruding the ground in peculiar shapes.
With all the trees you were walking past, you couldn’t be sure that you weren’t walking in circles.
Just looking at the sunlight seeping through the gaps in the leaves, you knew that it had been hours since your parents and Olivia had seen you off from the gate of your family home. The sun was past its highest point in the sky, and it probably wouldn’t be long until it set, and the moon replaced it.
At this point, you just hoped you would get to the ritual site before that horrid Lee Sangyeon. The forest entry point was closer to his family estate, after all. Maybe, you’d be lucky, and he’d decided on having a late start on the trek. No specific time had been listed. Heaven forbid they’d take your lateness, your absence as your forfeiture of the crown.
Your jaw clenched at the thought.
Like hell, you’d ever let a Lee take the throne when you were able and capable.
Your nose scrunched in distaste. Just thinking about Sangyeon, or any Lee, felt disgusting.
But all thought of Sangyeon left you when you lifted your gaze from the map and found the final landmark.
Beyond the tree with a hollow hole in its trunk and vines hanging off its branches like a curtain, hiding whatever was beyond it, was the place you were supposed to be. The ritual site. The place where it had all begun.
The place where it would all end.
You walked forward, fully intent on pushing through the vines when you heard his forsaken voice.
“Y/N!” Sangyeon shouted.
He came from the left, into a running stop in front of you, and forced you to turn and look at him by pulling on your arm.
“Listen to me. Please. I’m sorry. Nothing—“
“Save it,” you snapped, yanking your arm from his grip. “I don’t care about your sugar coated words anymore.”
“They aren’t sugar-coated,” he huffed. “Nothing of what Sunwoo said was true. You have to believe me.”
You were silent. You didn’t understand why you stood there, rooted in place as if you were just another tree that belonged to the forest. Still, you trained your eyes on the dirt beneath the soles of your boots.
“Everything you heard him say—“ he placed a hand on your arm, begging for you to listen to him, “Everything. It was all idiocy.”
“It doesn’t matter,” you insisted. “Whether you used me or not. The silence you gave him while he spoke about us— me. I used you in the end too.”
Sangyeon was silent for a moment. Then, in a voice you’d almost say was desperate and disbelieving, he said, “You can’t have meant what you said.”
“I did.”
“No,” he whispered. “After everything we’ve been through together, everything we did, you can’t have felt nothing for me.”
You remained silent.
“I was silent while Sunwoo talked about us so displeasingly because I thought it would get him to be quieter quicker. But I was wrong. I should have defended you, us, our love, and I was, in the end. But, I saw you, and I couldn’t just let you leave having heard all that.”
“A likely story.”
He paused as if contemplating the words he was going to say next, “Y/N, I love you.”
“Don’t,” you scoffed, brushing his hand off you. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“Y/N,” he sighed again.
You lifted your gaze then and looked at him. From his brown eyes staring at you pleadingly to the dark royal cloak with whirling golden accents running up his chest and the black boots, he was wearing. He was dressed identically to you. He even wore the same black belt as you with his own sword attached to it.
Then, you looked away, “It won’t matter for much longer anyway.”
With your gaze fixed toward the curtain of vines again, you marched forward.
The side behind the curtain of vines was nothing like the side you had just come from.
A clearing, you thought, like a meadow without all the flowers and trees. Except, there were trees, shaping the grass clearing into a perfect circle. But, while the forest had had sunlight filtered through leaves, the sunlight here was unnaturally bright and clear.
There were four large stepping stones immediately in front of you, spread out evenly from each other. Each one was almost five yards from the other. They framed half the circle perfectly.
But two of them, you realized as you walked to the center of the four, were cracked in two and half-submerged into the ground, jutting out like jagged rocks.
The curtain of vines rustled behind you, Sangyeon finally following after you. You didn’t turn, but you could feel him stop and take in the new surroundings just like you had.
“What is this place?” He asked.
“Ah, the last of the Gifted,” a voice marveled calmly, though its sudden appearance startled you. You ripped your gaze away from the stones and found the source.
An old, frail-looking man with white hair cropped close to his scalp stood at the center of the circle.
He smiled. “My wife and I have been waiting for you. Please,” he looked at you and motioned to the last stepping stone on the far right. “The Gifted one of the Y/L/N family represent your lineage. Stand on your family crest.”
You nodded wordlessly, still startled at the old man’s sudden materialization. You glanced at the cracked stone as you passed it and recognized the Mons family crest decaying.
“The Gifted of the Lee family, please stand on your family crest.  Represent your lineage.”
You waited on your family crest, watching the old man watch Sangyeon reach his own family crest, then turn and look at you.
“Prosperity shall come for the Kingdom,” he said in a voice no louder than the one he had been using when you were closer, yet it stayed constant even with the distance between you, “when the Gifted are in harmony. Old horizons brought new shall arise, and together live in peace. The throne shall only be won by one. The head and the heart together, a hard-earned balance to be worthy. This is the prophecy of the Gifted.”
You swore he had stolen your ability to breathe while he talked.
The prophecy was longer than the one you had heard about. The one you knew, the one you had been told about, only explained that peace and prosperity would come when a Gifted one sat on the throne.
You risked a glance at Sangyeon and found him looking just as confused as you felt.
“Today, Gifted ones, your challenge is to find your way out of this forest and to the Castle. The ritual cannot end, will not end until one of you sits on the throne and becomes the next ruling monarch.”
The two of you were silent.
“That’s it?” You asked.
It was incredulous, you realized, how little anyone knew of what you and Sangyeon would be dealing with for a crown that came with a world of responsibilities.
Is this why the rest of the Gifted refused to speak of what the trials consisted of?
“Indeed,” the old man mumbled, though it sounded just the same. You couldn’t even tell if he was talking to himself or the two of you as he went on, as he stared off in the direction the two of you had come from.
“The others have had this same challenge as well. Though it seems that after centuries of conferring it, no point has been made, and rules have been broken. Greed indeed.”
He sighed.
“The unintended fall of two houses, and the worsening of a such a simple challenge.”
He hummed and was silent. He bowed his head as if deep in thought, then straightened like someone had poured a bucket of ice water on him.
“Nevertheless, this remains your challenge. I thank you for coming and bid you well. You may begin.”
He pointed at the curtain of vines where you had come, and you turned to look at it, expecting to see something there only to find it just as it had been. You turned to look at the old man again and found he was gone.
“What?” You spoke mainly to yourself. “Where? Where did he go?”
“I- I don’t know,” Sangyeon answered. “I turned to look at where he was pointing, and when I looked again, he was gone.”
You looked at him despite your better judgment and glared at him when you noticed he was starting to make his way toward you.
You shook your head. “Do not come any closer to me.”
The sky was orange when you finally paid attention, and the sun was beginning to set. Shooting Sangyeon a final glare, you set off in a run, pushing past the vines and setting off in the direction you had come from.
♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
Goosebumps littered your sleeve-covered arms as you paused next to a tree you swore you had passed miles ago.
You turn in place, looking through all the gaps in the trees, trying to decide which way you should be going. Which way looks the most like the one you had entered from? Then, you looked at the sky through the gaps between leaves.
It was still orange.
The sun was still setting.
You rubbed at your cheek worryingly. Nothing felt right.
Everything felt off.
You’d discovered your map had disappeared from your possession not long after you’d set off in a run. You had even retraced your steps only to realize you didn’t recognize anything. The curtain of vines was gone, and the trees looked nothing like the ones you had seen coming into the forest.
It had only taken you another mile of walking to take note of a strange gray-colored haze over everything. That’s when you started to feel the panic set in.
Where the hell were you? And why had the sun not set if you were sure you’d been walking for a longer time than enough.
You remembered the path you had taken into the forest and counted the exact steps, and yet you were nowhere near the edge. If anything, you realized horror-struck: you seemed to go deeper inside. The trees were bigger, growing in throngs that made it feel like you’d suddenly be cut off.
All the while, you swore it felt like something was watching you, though it would come and go.
You shuddered at the thought. It would do you no good to become more paranoid and frightened than you already were.
Instead, you studied the ground. Perhaps you could find traces of the dandelions that grew near the edge. But there were none. The ground was devoid of any greenery.
You sighed, and that’s when you felt it again, the feeling of being watched.
You gulped. It had to be Sangyeon, right? So why did you hear warning bells and the hairs on the back of your neck stand?
You turned in place again, slowly raking your eyes over the spaces between the trees.
Then you saw it. Something tall and wide charging at you from the shadows.
The need to run was clear, but you found yourself rooted into place, watching as it grew closer, grew clearer. It was as dark as shadows even when it stepped into the light, and when it extended its claws, you knew exactly what it was.
A single strangled gasp was all you could muster.
“Run, Y/N!” Sangyeon yelled as he ran toward you, though it didn’t seem like you heard him.
Without waiting for you to respond, he grabbed your hand when he reached you and pulled you into a run next to him, running west of where you had originally been heading.
He ran, pulling you the entire way, turning to look behind him. The thing followed the two of you through the forest, forcing Sangyeon to weave through the trees and change directions as often as he could without accidentally turning toward it. Eventually, he turned and found it disappeared.
The two of you stopped then, using the break to catch your breaths and soothe your burning chests.
“Have— Have you been following me this entire time?” You snapped.
“Okay. I know what you’re thinking.”
You huffed and turned on your heels, stalking away toward a random line of trees.
“Y/N, stop. Yes, I followed you. Okay? But, we need to stick together—“
“No,” you grunted, “no, we don’t. Look, you go your way, and I’ll go mine. There’s no point in the two of us being together.”
“Yes, there is. This place isn’t normal. Haven’t you noticed there hasn’t been a single animal near us? There’s hardly any sign of life besides the trees. We have to stick together.”
You glared at him but contemplated his reasoning. You didn’t want to stay together. You didn’t. But, the forest was strange, and it’s not like you had ever been far into the endless forest. Maybe he had a map. And that thing. The shadow creature from your first ou—
The shadow creature was dangerous. It could kill you, and though you didn’t want to admit it out loud, would have if Sangyeon hadn’t been there to pull you out of your paralyzing fear.
“Fine.” You grumbled. “Where should we—“
You had only blinked, you were sure. It hadn’t even been a second, so how had the sky gone from sunset orange to deep nighttime blue.
“W-What?” You stuttered. “What happened? Where did the sun go?”
“It’s not just that,” Sangyeon mumbled as he placed a hand on your arm.
“What do you mean?”
“Look around you.”
You did, “I don’t get it. The forest still looks the same.”
“Exactly. We have no lit torches or candles. How is it we’re still able to see our feet?”
“I don’t like this.” You whispered to him. “None of this is normal. What do we do? Do you have your map? Maybe it can hel—“
“I don’t have my map. I lost it.”
“What?” You stared at him like you couldn’t understand what he had just said.
“I don’t have the map. I swear I put it in my pocket when we found the vines, but when I checked again, it wasn’t there anymore.”
“Oh, that’s just great,” you groaned. “What are we supposed to do now?”
“Get rest,” he suggested. “It’s night, and I’m not sure how much I trust these woods to traverse it. Especially with that thing in here with us.”
“Okay,” you nodded, “Okay.”
“Over there,” Sangyeon pointed behind you. “I see a cave. We can sleep in there.”
You followed him as he set off, eyeing the cave ahead. “It’s small.”
“But, it’ll give us cover.”
“Do you really think that thing won’t attack us there? We’ll have nowhere to run.”
“I’ll summon knights. They’ll keep guard for us and wake us if it appears.”
“Will that be enough?” You asked as you entered the cave.
It was as small as it looked outside, almost as if it were more of a mound of dirt or clay fashioned into a cave. You could see the back of the cave from where you stood, only a foot inside.
“It’ll have to.”
♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
Waking next to Sangyeon felt like a fever dream, EVEN when ‘waking next to’ him really meant he was sleeping only a yard away from you. That was inconsequential. Especially, it seemed, since your hands had a mind of their own and had outstretched themselves in his direction while you slept.
His had as well, but you couldn’t be sure he hadn’t done that before he had fallen asleep.
Still, you thought to yourself, you didn’t want him to wake up and see. Rather begrudgingly, you pushed yourself off the ground, grabbed your sword and the leather pouch you had unfastened from your belt, and headed for the mouth of the cave.
You stopped right at the edge and stared outside. Two knights marched between the trees, eyes raking over the surrounding area at a speed you couldn’t fathom. Though, when they saw you, they paused and bowed to you before resuming.
You were looking at the sky through the gaps between leaves when he woke.
“Were you really going to leave without saying anything?”
“I wasn’t going to leave,” you answered him after a moment of silence. “I wanted to check on my supplies in peace. In the sun.”
“Oh.”
“We should get going now before it gets dark.”
“It’ll be a while before it gets dark. It’s barely morning.”
“The sky would say otherwise,” you mumbled and motioned for him to take a look.
He moved almost instantly, pushing himself off the ground roughly and coming to a stop next to you. He looked at the sky for a minute as if trying to will it to change, and when it didn’t, he glanced at the knights.
“You’re right. We should get moving.”
You had probably only walked a mile before Sangyeon decided to speak to you again. The knights had been sent back to the realm of the dead, and your mouth was full as you had just pulled out a plain bun wrapped in a handkerchief to eat.
“You brought a bun? What else did you bring with you?”
“Another bun, some cloth for bandages, a healing salve, and a small dagger.” You responded once you had swallowed. “You?”
“I brought berries, a bottle of wine and myrrh, strips of cloth for bandages and wrappings, a small dagger, and a bag of gold coins.”
You nodded and took another bite out of the bun in your hands. You chewed slowly, trying to make it last. After all, there was no way of knowing how long you would be stuck in the forest. But you really didn’t want to think about that.
He waited for you to take another bite out of your bun before speaking again.
“Y/N, I know you don’t want to listen to me. But, please—“ you choked at his words, and he spoke even quicker, “Please. Just listen to me. Nothing of what Sunwoo said was ever my intention. I approached with knowledge of who you were that day I went to the apothecary. And asked to court you because I wanted to court you. Honestly.”
You spared a second to look to glare at him, then resumed ignoring him. Rather pointedly, you took another bite out of your bun.
The silence was heavy. You could practically feel his stare on your face. Then he’d look away, and not even a second later, he was staring at you again.
“You mightn’t believe me, but it’s the truth.”
He paused.
“Did you mean it?”
You glanced past him from the corner of your eyes. You couldn’t tell if he had noticed, but it felt like had when he continued.
“Did you really court me solely to keep me close? As your enemy?”
Your throat burned at the sudden swallowing of a larger chunk of bread.
You considered your words. The answer was inevitable, and, in the end, you could find no other way than simply answering, “Yes.”
A sharp intake of breath on his part was all you needed to know it wasn’t the answer he had been hoping for.
“Alright,” he relented, a hint of resignation in his voice, “I… can accept that. But I don’t believe it was the only reason you courted me. At least, not after a couple of months.”
He stopped, and while you fully intended to keep walking, he grabbed your arm and pulled you backward.
“You loved me. The way I loved you. I know you did.”
There was the silence again. He waited, staring at you as if you would disappear if he stopped.
“I didn’t. I—“
A roar, low and garbled, interrupted you. Bells went off in your head. The two of you had heard that sound before.
But, before you could turn and look for it, Sangyeon had pulled you aside, yelling for you to watch out.
The monster was on you in an instant, stretching its long, spidery arms like long pointed needles as it tried to swipe at you.
You yelped as you dodged and fell to the floor. You scrambled to stand up, unsheathing the sword at your side.
In front of you, Sangyeon had already unsheathed his sword and was attempting to fight it. He swung at its arms the same way it swung its arms until it was able to fling him aside.
You gasped as you watched him hit the trunk of the tree a few feet away. You almost ran in his direction, but the shadow monster charged at you again.
You lifted your sword, deflecting its claws before swinging it as fast as you could and swiping at its torso.
It screeched and swung at you again.
Hit. Dodge. Hit. Dodge.
It was taller than you, much taller. You had to look up at it while you fought, craning your neck to try to read its next move.
It was only when it managed to hit you, claws managing to graze your cheek, and it sent you stumbling backward, that you realized its back was hunched. It leaned forward to get a better look at you.
Then it charged at you.
You braced yourself, sword up, ready to counter its blow for when it reached you. Then it did, and your sword did nothing.
The strength it possessed doubled for a brief moment, and it managed to hit the sword strongly enough to send it flying.
It wasted no time to lunge at you again, swordless and defenseless as if it knew it had gotten rid of your only weapon.
But, just as it was milliseconds away from killing you with a blow to your head, Sangyeon got in its way. He pushed you back, sword in the air to block its attack, and it worked.
He grunted as he swung again, pushing it back.
You gave a shuddering breath of relief as you watched him drive it backward, away from you through several trees. But the work wasn’t done, and you knew it. Sangyeon’s work was slow, though effective. You didn’t want to admit it, but it was clear that Sangyeon had been practicing his sword-fighting skills for much longer than you.
You’d have to thank the heavens that your trails hadn’t consisted of a one-on-one battle.
Still, you reminded yourself, Sangyeon needed help. You needed to find your sword.
You ran through the layer of trees, searching for your sword frantically.
The monster roared again, and you turned to look. Sangyeon was beginning to lose his advantage, fatigue starting to take away his edge.
He hit and dodged twice before landing a hit on the shadowy monster again.
“I’m coming, Sangyeon!” You yelled to him as you resumed your frantic search for your sword. “Just hold on a little more!”
A glint from the ground feet away from you sent you running in its direction. You grabbed the hilt of your sword and pulled it from the ground, turning on your heel as quickly as you could.
You had only taken a couple of steps forward before you were forced into a sudden stop. Shock ran through you as you witnessed the shadow monster bring its claws against Sangyeon’s torso.
“Sangyeon!”
His sword, still up in the air, slipped out of his hand before he buckled. He kneeled on the floor for another moment before the monster roared and took another swipe at him, tossing him aside as if he were weightless.
He stuck another tree, then fell to its base, slumped over, and from what you could tell,
“Sangyeon?!”
unresponsive.
It roared and screeched as it turned toward you again, then took off running.
It ran past Sangyeon, deeming him unimportant.
“Knights!” You screamed, closing your eyes, as you attempted to summon them. You hoped you could summon them. You had found your sword, you were holding your sword, but you couldn’t find the strength to lift it again.
You felt a whoosh of cold air rush past you, the first sign of the outside world that you’d felt the entire time you had been inside the forest. Willing the knights to be there, you opened your eyes and took off running.
They were there, and while you would normally take a moment to marvel at the fact that you managed to summon someone, this time two someones, there was no more time for them than for a mere glance of confirmation.
They fought the shadowy monster perfectly in tune with each other, and the longer they fought, the farther they drove him away from where Sangyeon lay slumped over.
“Sangyeon,” you called to him as you reached him. His shirt had been shredded across his chest, and blood seeped through the five slashes etched into him.
You shuddered at the sight, then looked up at his face. “Sangyeon? Sangyeon, I need you to open your eyes,” you asked him as calmly as you could, though, with each passing second, you could feel the gravity of the situation increasing.
“Sangyeon? Sangyeon, please.”
He mumbled something under his breath that you couldn’t make out. Still, it sent a wave of relief through you.
Then, you blinked, and it was night again, and you heard another roar from far away.
“I can’t. I can’t try to heal you here. It’s not safe. We have to get somewhere safe. I’ll— I’ll,” you struggled to explain yourself. Sighing, you took off his cloak and what remained of his shirt. You proceeded to tear the rest of his shirt into strips, tying them into five longer pieces that could wrap around his torso.
“There,” you said to him, tying the last strip around the shortest of the slashes as tightly as you dared, “that should be enough for now.”
He grunted as you forced him into a standing position, pulling one of his arms around your shoulders. He was barely lucid. Besides his whimpering and grunting, all you could hear and feel was his ragged breathing against the crook of your neck.
You carried his entire weight as you walked, though his feet dragged against the ground.

There was no way to know how long you had been walking, only that you’d spent a good time shaking under Sangyeon, fear coursing strongly through your veins. Your eyes kept jumping between the knight leading you forward and the spaces between the trees around you. The shadow monster could return at any moment, and the idea of it attacking, right now, while Sangyeon continued to bleed terrified you.
The knights had found you not long after you’d started to move, and you’d asked them to find a cave and lead you there. Only one had gone, disappearing in front of you before appearing again sometime later. So, when that same knight stopped and pointed you forward, you sagged in relief.
You laid him on the floor of the cavern, not much bigger than the cavern you had slept in before, carefully. And, after ordering the knights to patrol the trees and protect you from the shadow monster, you dug through your satchel for your dagger, the slave, and the cloth you’d brought for bandages. Then, rummaged through his for the mixture he had brought.
You undid the makeshift bandages you’d tied around him, wincing at the groan that slipped past his lips. You cleaned his wounds first, dabbing them dry with the inside of his cloak, then slathering the healing salve over it before cutting bandages and wrapping them tightly around his wounds. He moaned as you did, and you flinched as if you could feel his wounds on you.
It was only when you’d finished, and you’d used your own cloak to blanket Sangyeon, that you realized there were tears streaming down your face and onto Sangyeon.
You crawled away and slumped against one of the walls, wiping your tears as they fell.
Sangyeon. He couldn’t— he couldn’t die, could he?
Choking on a sob, you began stuffing all the materials you had used on Sangyeon into your satchel. You paused when you were done, and your hand brushed against a thick piece of leather. You pulled it out and stared at the journal you’d pulled out of your wall, suddenly remembering everything you had read from it.
You flipped through it, searching for one of the passages you’d marked.
‘The Shadow Soul,’ you read silently from the top of the page where it had been squeezed into the thin margin that had been created because of the first line written on the page.
‘I tried summoning Min after his funeral. I know a Gifted has never been able to be summoned, but I wanted to try. The others didn’t want to do it, though. They didn’t want to see him after what he’d done. But I did. So I did so on my own. I wanted to scream at him, fight with him for having cheated. If he hadn’t tried to get ahead of the rest of us, he might still be alive. We all thought he was going to be the one to win the throne anyway.
But I’m going in a direction I don’t mean to.
When I attempted to summon Min, I found I was unable to. It took all the power I could muster and utter concentration to summon him. But, when I opened my eyes, I found myself standing in front of a monster. It was tall, towering over seven feet, and its limbs were spindly, like broken needles that had been enlarged. Its back was hunched, and its claws seemed permanently clenched until it decided to attack me. It followed me as I ran through the forest, but I think I lost it on the way out.
I was worried that it had gone into town or into our family estate, but it’s been a couple of hours, and if it had, I assume I would have heard screaming by now.
I don’t know what that thing was, but I’ll be going back. I’ll bring a sword, and I’ll try summoning Min again, and if that thing shows up again, then I’ll fight it and try to kill it.
I know I should probably tell the others about what I saw. But I don’t think they’d believe me. I don’t even want to believe it myself. I mean, how crazy must I be to feel like I saw Min’s face before it transformed into the monster’s? No. I can’t.’
You flipped the page. The entry had ended there, but you knew what came next. Your eyes burned into the inked drawing of a shadow monster that looked similar to the one you kept encountering, but you knew wasn’t it. Eventually, your eyes trailed to the page that followed, where another entry had been added, but no title had been given.
It seemed like a regular journal entry, at first glance, like the ones that had come before the shadow monster. But, it had taken you no more than the first line to understand why. The entry that followed was a continuation of the last. They’d most likely gone back to add the title to the first entry after they realized the contents of their journal were about to change drastically.
You read it again, ‘I attempted to summon Min again, and it did not go as planned. The shadow monster appeared again when I attempted to summon him. At first, it simply seemed to stare at me like it was waiting for something. I studied it while I could, trying to convince myself that I was merely imagining this beast. But, as I took a step backward to get a better look at its face instead of having to crane my neck, it attacked me. By a stroke of luck, it missed, and I managed to unsheathe my sword.
It’s strong, though, and while I attempted to fight it and lasted what I hope was more than a minute, it managed to fling my sword to the side. I had no other choice but to run. I’ll have to go back and collect it later. Hopefully, it’ll be gone by then. Since it does seem to need to be summoned to appear.
I guess I should be patting myself on the back for having decided to try summoning Min in the forest. I kept a closer eye on it as I ran. I fell twice and barely got away from it, but I did get away, and I managed to discover that the forest may be acting as a boundary. It was incapable of following me out.
I don’t want to. I still doubt they’ll believe me, but I need to tell them.’
You flipped the page again.
‘They came with me to see me summon the shadow monster…,’ you skimmed the pages now. ‘It attacked us again… We tried attacking them together. It worked for a while. But then it actually managed to strike one of us. Lee has a cut across his cheek. I don’t know how we’re going to explain this…. we ran away again….’
You flipped the page again.
‘Nothing’s working. Nothing’s working. I don’t know what we’re supposed to do. Maybe we should just stop summoning it… Mon’s been keeping a journal of his own. I saw him writing in it, but he put it away as soon as he noticed I was near…they won’t listen to me…’ another flip of the page,
‘It’s getting harder for us to meet. We’ve all got scratches, marks from when we got too close or weren’t fast enough to dodge it. They think we’re fighting with each other. We keep denying it, but I don’t think they believe us…. It did as I asked. I don’t know why or how I even thought of doing this. But just as it was about to attack, I panicked, and instead of running, I ordered it to stop…. I think I understand now. We’ve tested it multiple times…the person who summons it, that’s who it’ll listen to.…’
Another flip of the page,
‘They’re demented. But I must be too to just do as they asked. At the very least, we learned something new. It can’t stay long after it’s summoned….’
You flipped the page again, skipping through everything to get to the end of the entry,
‘It’s Min. I don’t know how I know it’s him. But I do. I wasn’t hallucinating when I thought I saw his face. The shadow monster, it’s Min.’
♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
You fell asleep clutching the journal to your chest, back against the wall, and neck bent awkwardly. When you woke, you did so because you felt like you couldn’t breathe.
You checked on Sangyeon first. There was no way to tell how many hours had gone by, you didn’t have to stick your head outside much to know that the sun was well up in the sky, but you knew it had probably been long enough for you to change his bandages. But, as you undid them and you reapplied the slave, you noticed the heat on his skin.
You only finished tying the new bandages around him before placing the back of your hand against his forehead. Then, you were sure.
Sangyeon had a fever.
You pushed back the panic trying to creep back inside you and focused on putting your cloak on him. Then stuffed his and the book back inside your satchel, pausing as an idea formed.
You walked to the mouth of the cave, watching the two knights patrol your surroundings a couple of meters away.  They were beginning to flicker in and out of existence, but they persisted on your order.
“Knights!” You yelled to get their attention. They stopped and looked at you. “I thank you for keeping watch. You may go now.”
They nodded, and a moment later, they dissolved out of existence.
You bit your lip then, before closing your eyes, exhaling as calmly as you could.
The portraits of your Gifted ancestors were easy to remember even if you had stopped paying attention to them past the age of ten. You could picture her there, painted onto a canvas, sitting on an elaborate, silver encrusted throne, staring at the painter with a pair of dull, lifeless eyes.
You pictured her writing in her journal, sketching out the shadow monster she’d accidentally summoned.
“Please come,” you whispered, hands clenched into fists as you tried to summon her. You could feel your energy dispelling, sapping itself, and when you felt as if you could keep going no longer, you heard shuffling in front of you.
When you opened your eyes, gasping for breath at the same time, you were startled to see a man standing in front of you.
You blinked.
“Who are you?” You asked him, expecting him to answer, only for him to pull on the cloak he wore.
You eyed the breast pocket where his family’s sigil was sewn on.
“Lee?” You shook your head. “I’m not a Lee, I’m a Y/L/N, and I called my ancestor.”
He stared at you unblinkingly, as if he couldn’t understand what you were saying. You had half a mind to dismiss him until Sangyeon groaned behind you, and you remembered why you had tried summoning your ancestor in the first place.
“I need you to show us the way out of this forest. Can you do that?”
Sangyeon’s ancestor nodded.
“Okay,” you nodded, “just give me a minute. Then we can leave.”
♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
Sangyeon’s feet dragged against the forest floor as you supported his weight on your side. You knew you weren’t strong, not that strong, at least, but you were glad you were able to shoulder his weight for miles. Even if you could feel your shoulder burning under his weight.
Sangyeon’s ancestor walked confidently a couple of steps ahead of you. He took a left, then a right, another right, straight ahead. He walked as if he had a map of the forest in his hands.
The knights had to look for what you asked of them, but this man walked as if he owned the land.
You weren’t sure how long or how far you had walked, only that your own feet were beginning to drag, and your shoulder was beginning to feel numb.
Eventually, the Lee spirit stopped and pointed past a line of trees.
“Past those trees? Are you sure?”
He nodded and, without waiting for you to dismiss him, disappeared.
You waited wide-eyed for him to return, and when he didn’t, you released a shuddering breath and made your way forward.
You maneuvered your way through a line of trees, wondering where the forest ended. As far as your eyes could see, trees were the only thing present going forward. But, as you stepped through a second line of trees, you found yourself on dull, green grass.
You paused. The trees you had seen for miles in front of you had disappeared in the blink of an eye, and now, you stared at the street in front of you. You were at the edge of town. You didn’t even need to turn around to know what you’d find behind you.
“What?” You asked yourself as you stared at Lovers forest. “How? This is nowhere near the actual forest. Sangyeon. Sangy—“
Truthfully, you’d forgotten Sangyeon was unconscious until you turned to look at him. One glance at him and the appearance of Lovers forest was unimportant.
“Hold on, Sangyeon. The castle’s only a couple of miles away.”
You walked as quickly as you could through the rest of the park, headed in the direction of the cobblestone road that you knew if you followed, would lead you through town and directly to the castle.
You breathed heavily, lungs burning. It was a long walk to the castle, but you comforted yourself in the thought that you were so close to the end.
Time moved quickly though it felt like an eternity to your legs and shoulders. Before you knew it, you were nearing the center of town.
You had just turned the bend when you were forced into a stop. Only a couple of streets away, you could see three shadow monsters walking aimlessly outside the shops.
Beside you, Sangyeon moaned again, his head lolling against your shoulder as he wriggled uncomfortably in your hold. You didn’t have to look at him to know what was wrong. You could feel his blood seeping through his bandages.
That single second went unnoticed, though it remained invaluable. Sangyeon’s moan, though several streets away from the monsters, caught their attention.
They turned together, staring in your direction as if they couldn’t believe what they’d found. They were still for a moment that seemed to last forever. But, at that same moment, you spied the apothecary out of the corner of your eyes.
The shadow monsters moved at the same time you set off. It was a race where they gained greater ground than you did and hoping that it would give you a moment longer to reach the apothecary, you veered off the main road.
Instead of the apothecary, you set eyes on the door of the physician's cottage. It was close. So very close.
You stumbled over your feet the closer you got until you heard a roar behind you, and you fell to your knees. You gasped, breath stolen from your lungs.
Compulsion led you to turn around and check how far they were from you.
Just a corner away.
You struggled to stand up, legs buckling as you tried to pull Sangyeon up into your previous position.  Your panic grew as they grew closer. You could hear yourself breathing as if the sound was independent of yourself.
On the brink of giving up, you half carried, half pulled Sangyeon toward the cottage. Even hunched over, you felt like your feet were glued to the ground, and it took everything you didn’t know you had inside yourself to get closer to the cottage.
You could feel them getting closer, like an incoming typhoon of rage. It was a wonder how you hadn’t noticed that before. Perhaps it was because there had only been one before.
You grunted as you reached the cottage, laying Sangyeon on the ground so you could open the door. It was horrible, you admitted to yourself, the way you grabbed Sangyeon’s arms and dragged him into the cottage. But, there was time for nothing else. Your strength was diminishing, and they were nearly on you.
Sangyeon’s feet had just cleared the arching width of the door when they reached the cottage.
You flung yourself across the foyer, slamming the door shut with a sigh of relief.
They screeched on the other side, unable to step inside. Though, with how they were in town instead of the forest, you feared they’d be able to step inside too. Maybe they’d been summoned in the streets, and they were bound there.
You shuddered and backed away from the door when they roared again, and you caught a glimpse at their jagged, rotten, blackened teeth.
Sangyeon’s loud, ragged breathing forced you to focus on him rather than the monsters at the door.
You flinched at the blotch of blood that was growing on the bandages around his torso. It was bright red and fresh, rather than the dry, reddish-brown blood you’d seen on the other bandages.
“Hold on. Hold on, Sangyeon.” You threw another glance at the shadow monsters scratching at the door, making sure the door was holding before bending down and forcing him into a sitting position. Then you squatted next to him and pulled his arm around your shoulder so you could pull him into a standing position, though your knees practically begged you not to.
Shaking the entire time, you lugged Sangyeon in the direction of the backdoor, which you remember led to the patient rooms as well as the apothecary.
You carried him through it until you reached the final two rooms, the physician’s office, and the final patient room.
You struggled to get into the final patient room, pushing through the swinging door slowly.
You were breathing heavily when you got to the table where you laid Sangyeon as gently as you could.
Time was of the essence, so you set off without delay to the apothecary. Everything you needed for bandages and salves would be there, and if you could find it in yourself to make a second trip, maybe you could find the ingredients you needed to make a salve for the pain that was beginning to set in on your knees.
♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕☈♚♕♚♕
Night came as it had been coming before, suddenly, in the blink of an eye.
You’d been staring out the window behind the counter, mixing in the final ingredient for your ointment before you put it on fire to boil it when the sunset sky disappeared. You’d already seen it happen twice before, but it continued to catch you off guard.
You’d kept guard from the window, watching the streets for a single shadow monster to appear. It was only then that you noticed that everything in town, around you, even in the apothecary, seemed to be plunged into a slimy gray.
Though the absence of the townspeople had skipped your attention, it was very clear now that you weren’t in— hadn’t been — in your kingdom for a while.
When the ointment was done, you rushed to apply it before scurrying back to Sangyeon’s side. You slept in one of the chairs next to the patient’s table, waking up with every scratch and creek you heard.
Eventually, when you woke up and felt you had slept for more than an hour, you changed Sangyeon’s bandages again, then made for the apothecary. The sun was back, and though you didn’t know when it had come back, you took it as your sign to get a move on.
You peered out the windows. No shadow monsters in sight. The castle? In sights. A blotch of dark gray. Close enough.
This was your chance, you thought as you grabbed Sangyeon and headed for the front door. While the ointment had helped you a bit, you were sure that if you tried walking any faster than you were, you’d only end up falling.
You took a deep breath at the door, throwing a quick glance out the window before pulling the door open.
You walked as quickly as you dared, looking down all the streets that intersected with yours. There were no shadow monsters that you could see, though you feared they’d suddenly appear when Sangyeon moaned in pain.
The paranoia followed you until you were nearly at the top of the hill where the castle rested. Though your breathing was heavy, you could feel clouds under your feet, the distance to the door of the castle growing smaller.
“Y/N,” you heard Sangyeon say breathlessly.
“Sangyeon?” You asked, coming to a stop.
His breathing was shallow, and his face pale, you could have sworn he was passed out, but here you were, watching his eyelids crack open.
“Behind…us.”
“What? What’s wrong? We’re almost there. It’ll all be over soon, Sangyeon.”
“Behind… us.” He tried again. “…Mon…ster.”
You whipped your head around, Sangyeon sliding off a bit from your shoulder.
At the base of the hill, a single shadow monster raced up. Its screeching carried up the hill and to your ears, quiet enough that you would have missed it if you hadn’t been paying attention.
You gasped and almost stumbled over your feet as you scrambled to keep walking.
Up the rest of the hill, through the front gate— it reached the top of the hill. You pushed open one door first, the second with your foot— it had made it past the gate, and you slipped past the crack of the door.
It felt like your breath had been stolen the moment you stepped into the castle. You were dizzy for a single moment before the castle knights appeared, kneeling in two single-file lines, one to your left and the other to your right.
Their eyes widened at your appearance, and outside screaming thundered.
“There’s a monster!” You gasped, through heavy breaths, rushing forward. “Help me! Do something!”
“Apologizes, your Highness. But, we are not allowed to interfere with your trial.”
The shadow monster roaring screech outside sounded closer than ever now. You grunted as you carried Sangyeon forward, following the man-made path the knights had made to the throne room.
The knights gasped behind you— the shadow monster was inside now. But it ignored them as if they weren’t even there.
Ahead, the doors to the throne room were wide open. Your family stood to the right, and you could see them straining their necks to glimpse outside.
A smile flashed across your family’s faces when they caught a look at you, then it disappeared, and confusion laced their expressions of shock. They’d noticed Sangyeon, then.
Their faces blanched as you reached the door. Sangyeon’s parents screamed for Sangyeon. They took a step forward—
“You are not to move,” a council member spoke, voice booming down to his parents as they stood next to the throne. “Until one of them sits on the throne—“
The shadow monster shrieked behind you, and you only had enough time to duck your head as you turned to look before it took a swipe at you. Your family screamed.
Beside you, Sangyeon gasped for a breath at the sudden jerk.
“Run,” he struggled to say, voice coming out quietly and strained.
A sudden burst of energy traveled through him suddenly, like magic, and he managed to push himself off of you, pushing you toward the throne at the same time.
“Run,” he gasped out again as the shadow monster took another swipe at him. It clawed his chest again, new scratch marks spread across his chest, and blood began to seep through them.
“Sangyeon!” You yelled as you watched him be thrust aside. He fell into a heap at the foot of his family, unresponsive to the screams of his family urging him to stand up.
The monster let out another screeching roar, bearing its fangs at you as it stared you down.
Time froze.
Then it ran.
You couldn’t say when it was that your feet began to move, only that one moment you were frozen in fear, staring at the shadow monster, and the next, your head was whipping around to face the throne, a lot closer than you had been.
Everything around you was a blur, the throne was the only object in focus, and you could hear yourself exhale, slowly and loudly.
Time sped up again, and you were nearly tripping over your own two feet as you bound up the steps in front of the dais and threw yourself onto the throne. Twisting around as you did, you held out your hand, palm outward.
“Stop!” You screamed, something inside you urging you to curl your hand like a claw.
In an instant, the shadow monster fell to its bony knees, claws digging into its head as it screeched in pain.
Behind your parents, your tutor gasped and fell to her knees, holding her head in her hands, groaning.
You breathed raggedly as you moved your gaze between the two. Then, you locked eyes with Olivia.
“Guards!” She called as she seized your tutor.
“Leave!” You ordered the shadow monster, a feeling inside you telling you what to do again.
“Search her,” you told Olivia when it disappeared, and your tutor slumped onto the ground, then gazed at Sangyeon.
 His family crowded around him.
“Lee family, Y/L/N family,” Lord Kwan bellowed, “Bow to your new Queen!”
Sangyeon’s family froze. Those who had been crouching, fanning his face as they cried and tried to wake him, straightened, eyes hard as they faced you.
“No. No. No.” You shook your head. “Please. Take him. Help him! Don’t bow! Go!”
They bowed, nonetheless, and a moment later, his father scooped him into his arms and rushed out of the room. The rest of his family glared at you for a moment longer, then curtsied and rushed after them.
No one else said a word. They all listened to Sangyeon’s fiancé lament over his current condition, wailing over the blood he was losing. They all watched as you stared at the pool of blood where his body had laid,
and the tears that ran down your face.

.div1 { background-image: linear-gradient(to top, red, white); }
La div 2 (on va appeler sa class .div2) correspond à :
.div2 { background-image: linear-gradient(to right, red, white); }
:root { --maVariable: #FFFFFF; }
De fait, revenons sur notre exemple de div et de linear-gradient. Réécrivons-le :
.div1, .div2 { background-image: linear-gradient(var(--direction), red, white); }
Et ensuite dans chaque div on peut spécifier :
.div1 { --direction: to top; } .div2 { --direction: to right; }

For the last couple weeks, I've been on a big grinding kick in Genshin again... it's been something, that's for sure. But I got a lot done (for some reason).
On alt:
Obtained Baizhu C2
Obtained Ayato
triple crowned Diluc, Kaeya and Zhongli, with also enough books for Childe to be triple crowned whenever I finally get him
Did the Narzissen quest line and explored a good chunk of Fontaine
...bought some cute wings...
I'm more or less finished off the Mond book domain. There's only Anemo Traveler left at 6/6/6, but since swirl scales from EM anyway, the talent levels aren't important enough for me to do another 114 gold books right now (for context, that's two weeks or so of doing the mond book domain every single day).
I did buy Welkin, so I'm going to keep logging in for the next few weeks, but I'm going to take it easy otherwise. My only current plan is to mess around in the teapot. I've finished another of the farming achievements, so I'll take the opportunity to rearrange the second area of Emerald Peak (since I can remove those fields). That should complete it, since I finally furnished the fourth area, and I've got some plans for Floating Abode next.
For future grinding, I should do artifacts (Deepwood/Gilded, then Emblem) and also the slow march to triple crown the next batch (Baizhu, Qiqi, Ayato). For future pulls, my priority will be Itto, Childe, and Neuvillette (for his kit lol), but since I don't care about the 4 stars now that I have C4 Thoma, it's just a matter of dumping everything I have into whoever comes around first and whether I get them or not isn't really pressing. The pity will carry over anyway. (Alhaitham and Wriothesley will be skips for now.)
On main:
prefarmed Navia levelling stuff (no artifacts or weapon for now, pending what the build guides will say)
obtained Kirara, currently finishing her last ascension
done most of Fontaine exploration, with every area except the Court at 100%
finished all world quests that aren't gated by the archon quest
finished all achievements except the commission and archon quest ones
Man, Genshin exploration is so... you just turn your brain off, and then suddenly it's six hours later. Repeatedly. Still kinda fun seeing the numbers go up though. Hopefully, the final region will be pretty small and easy to complete... But I'm 8 hydroculi short, which is not a good sign, since I can't get the resonance stone formula (no archon quests = no reputation).
The world quests this time were kind of a mixed bag, but mostly a miss. I liked the stuff about the Melusines and Elynas, very uh Durin-style. Generally, the Melusines kind of grew on me, though I still don't like their design, especially the bottom half. I liked the Pahsiv quest too, and unexpectedly the final little quest with Lanoire. (The handling of the camera on the small interactions at the very end?? Dang, who knew Genshin could do that kind of fine detail.) However, I really did not care about the Narzissenkreuz at all, or the Fontaine Research Institute stuff. The Narzissen fiasco was especially very tedious and convoluted. I know it's setting up Sandrome, but like... a perfect example of the issues with Genshin's lore and how it negatively warps the current day storyline, plus the worst of their excesses.
I'm going to be rolling for Navia in 4.3 because she is Geo (easy guarantee to get her, with 150 saved wishes, 10 pity, and 22K primos), and I'm considering the weapon banner. I think it'll come down to what the 4 stars will be (I really want Akuoumaru refines, so I might decide based on which half it's on). I did also fish for Kirara on the Ayato banner, and I did get her within 20 pulls, so that was great. She was the last pre-Fontaine 4 star I was missing, and I wanted to go ahead and build her. I'm not taking the Fontaine 4 stars past lv20, and now the only "backlog" character I am missing is Dehya.
I also... got Qiqi C1 in those twenty or so pulls. So hey, guarantee on Navia, which will put me quite a bit over budget. I can save for supposedly-Geo Chiori and Arlecchino, who has actual pants, holy shit. (That said, where's my Mond boy, Mihoyo??)
This 4.2 patch and the upcoming 4.3 one have some nice QoL updates, which bring some much needed minor conveniences. For me, the most impactful was probably the ability to quickstart weekly bosses. (Farming Apep on my alt to finally get some Dendro crystals, god...) But shout out to being able to unlock but not start story quests, and being able to replace daily commissions with exploration or events.
For next patch, we'll be able to one-click collect and resend expeditions and start at the key when doing a domain multiple times. Tiny things but holy shit, they're finally actually updating something. Man, if I drag this out enough, maybe they'll let you quickstart reputation too. And maybe even a goddamn skip button one day... we can dream.
But I gotta say the most exciting thing for next patch is probably the annual Lost Riches rerun with the new water-capable mini seelie. Really want that for my alt, where I have almost no pets.

Stompbox Studies - Class 1
Want to build your own effects pedals? A good place to start is understanding how transistors work. Transistors are those three legged devices seen populating many stompbox circuits.
Transistors are are a core building block in electronics. Integrated circuits, like op-amps, are made up of many transistors! Transistors are used in all of the circuits you’ve probably played or heard on recordings: Rangemaster, Fuzz Face, Tonebender, Big Muff, Tube Screamer, and too many more to list here.
The goal of this series of blog posts will be to present concepts you can use to understand how guitar effects pedals work, apply these ideas to debug, and make your own pedals.
Why I am I doing this? I have been building Stompboxes as a hobby for years now and want to build a deeper understanding of the electronic concepts underneath it all. I have been building pedals for years but it has always been sort of paint by numbers. I had some friends get into the hobby recently and they had lots of questions. Here are the answers I could come up with.
This class will be broken into three parts: a discussion in this blog post, a lab where your goal is to build the Dallas Rangemaster, and a reading assignment and study guide.
Discussion: Dallas Rangemaster
The Dallas Rangemaster is classic guitar pedal. Created by Dallas Muscial Ltd. in the 1960s. With a name like “Dallas” you’d think they were from Texas but in fact the company was located in London England!
The Rangemaster is a booster. Basically it’s a single transistor amplifier that filters the lower frequencies. It takes your guitar signal and shapes it and amplifies it.
Original Dallas Rangemaster
DIY Rangemaster
The Rangemaster was used by so almost every guitar player you can think of from the 60s. Here’s a short list of notables:
Eric Clapton
Tony Iommi
Marc Bolan
Rory Gallagher
… too many more to list
Many more used other pedals similar to or derivatives of the Rangemaster. Many companies sell boosters that are direct copies of the Rangemaster or are built from a single transistor like the Rangemaster for the same purpose. It’s definitely a pedal worth study.
Zvex Super Hard On
Electro Harmonix LB1
Hornby Skewes Treble Booster
Brian May Treble Booster
… and the list goes on
The Rangemaster circuit represents a basic building block that can be used in many guitar pedals. Understanding this circuit is a gateway to explaining how lots of classic effects work. It’s also a building block you can apply to effects of your own invention.
The circuit
Electronic circuits are expressed with schematics that have their own symbols. This is similar to the way music is expressed in notation or way a roadmap may be drawn.
Usually we give each part a number and a value. The lines represent an electrical connection between parts. Here is a list of the part numbers and values for the Rangemaster.
PartValueR1470KR268KR33K9C10.005µC20.01µC347µPOT1A10KQ1PNP
Rangemaster Parts
The parts here are four types: Resistors, Capacitors, Potentiometers, and transistors. lets look at each of these.
Resistors
Resistors are all listed with the prefix R in the parts list. There are three resistors R1, R2, and R3. Resistors impede the flow of electrons. We can use resistors to limit how much current is at any point in the circuit.
POT1 is a potentiometer, which is an adjustable resistor. Use a “pot” when you need a variable amount of voltage or current at a point in your circuit. For example a pot is often used as a volume control.
Capacitors
Capacitors are like little electrical reservoirs. They act as a gap that DC can’t pass but they allow and AC signal to pass! Capacitors used in the Rangemaster are C1, C2, and C3.
Capacitors are used to affect how audio is passed through your circuits. Capacitors are used to create filters and control the frequency of AC.
Some capacitors are polarized! One leg is marked with a + and that leg should go to the more electrically positive side of the circuit with the other leg going to the more electrically negative side of the circuit. Notice C3 has a + on the bottom that connects to the +9V in the schematic.
The transistor
In the original Rangemaster the transistor was OC44 or OC71. This was a germanium transistor. Transistors come a few varieties. Two of the most common are PNP and NPN. The OC44 is a PNP transistor.
You can build Rangemaster type circuits with almost any transistor. This is great because the OC44 and OC71 are hard to get and expensive these days. Some common transistors that would work as replacements are: 2N3906 or 2N5087. These are silicon transistors rather than germanium.
Typical transistors
The symbol for PNP and NPN transistors look like this. These are almost the same. Note the arrow! You can remember which is which with this: NPN = Not Pointing iN, PNP = Pointing iN.
PNP and NPN Transistors
The original Rangemaster was built with a PNP transistor. You could also build a Rangemaster type circuit with a NPN transistor. Some common part numbers for NPN transistors are 2N3904 and 2N5089.
NPN Rangemaster
Notice the changes to the circuit. (1) the transistor Q1 is NPN. (2) the +9v and -9v are swapped. This is where your battery would connect. (3) the capacitor C3 has been flipped around so that the + terminal is pointing towards the more positive side of the circuit and it’s other terminal connects to the -9v the more negative side of the circuit.
OHMs Law
OHMs law is a basic principle of electronics. OHMs law determines the flow of electrons through a circuit. If you thought of electrons like cars and the circuit diagrams above like a roadmap OHMs law could be used to predict the flow of traffic!
OHMS has three ideas:
Voltage (abbreviated E) is the electromotive force (measured in Volts, millivolts, and microvolts)
Current (abbreviated I) is the number of electrons in the flow of “traffic” (measured in amps, milliamps, and microamps)
Resistance (abbreviated R) is the opposition to the flow of electrons (measured in OHMs)
We can use math to calculate the flow of electrons through our circuit. Use the diagram above to help you remember the formulas.
E = I * R (find the voltage from the current and resistance)
I = E / R (find the current from voltage and resistance)
R = E / I (find the resistance from voltage and current)
The numbers you use need to be in the same realm. If you are working with Volts (E) then Current (I) needs to be amps. If you have voltage in millivolts then current needs to milliamps. If the units are mixed you can multiply or divide by 1000.
Volts VAmps AMillivolts mV (V / 1000)Milliamps mA (A / 1000)Microvolts µV (mV / 1000)Microamps µA (mA / 1000)
What does this mean? Take a look at the images below. You can use OHMs law to calculate the current and voltage.
In the first image we have 9 volts going through R8 which has a resistances of 2000 ohms (or 2K ohms). Whats the current? Using OHMs law we can figure it out!
I = E / R
I = 9 / 2000
0.0045 Amps or 4.5 milliamps or 4500 microamps
What about the second image. Image we don’t know the voltage but we do know we have 2 milliamps going through 1000 ohms resistance.
E = I * R
E = 0.002 * 1000 (Notice I converted milliamps to amps)
2v = 0.002 * 1000
Voltage Divider
Traffic moving down a road divides when it reaches an intersection some traffic will go one direction and some traffic will take the other route. The same is true of electrons moving through a circuit. If you were watching the road from a helicopter you’d see more traffic take the larger roads and less traffic take the narrow roadways. Think of the size of roads as resistors. Larger roads have less resistance and narrow winding roads create more resistance that slows traffic.
Look at the first example. There is 9 volts going through R1 and R2. What is the voltage at the intersection ?1. You can solve this if you understand voltage dividers. The formula is:
?1 = 9V * ( R2 / (R1 + R2))
?1 = 9V * ( 1K / (1K + 1K))
?1 = 9V * 1000 / (1000 + 1000)
?1 = 9V * 1000 / 2000
?1 = 9V * 0.5
?1 = 4.5V
Here I walked through the steps to solve the problem. Notice I converted 1K to 1000 ohms. Then finished up from there.
The formula is: V * R2 / (R1 + R2)
The shortcut here is if both resistors are the same value then voltage is divided in half. This would be true for any values for R1 and R2. Try it yourself. Imagine R1 and R2 are 10K. Then try R1 and R2 at 47K and 100K.
What happens when the values are not equal? What’s the voltage at the intersection: ?2.
?2 = 9V * 100K / (100K + 20K)
?2 = 9V * 20K / 120K
?2 = 9V * 20,000 / 120,000
1.5V = 9V * 0.166
Solve number 3 on your own!
To solve ?4 we have to know that resistors in series are added together. That means that we have a total resistance of 16.7K. To solve ?4:
?4 = 9V * (10K + 4.7K) / (2K + 4.7K + 10K)
?4 = 9V * 14.7K / 16.7K
?4 = 9V * 0.88
?4 = 7.92
Solve ?5 on your own…
With this knowledge you can start examining the Rangemaster circuit. Notice R1 and R2 for a voltage divider!
POT1 is also a voltage divider. Let’s take a moment to look at potentiometers.
Potentiometers
These are adjustable resistors. You’ll use potentiometers or “pots” when your circuits need to be able to adjust the resistance at a point in the circuit. A pot has three legs. Imagine the center leg is located between two resistors. The resistances change as you turn the pot!
We draw the pot like the image on the left. Internally it acts like the images on the right.
Imagine we have a 10K pot. With the knob in the center the resistance is divided equally with 5K on the top and 5K on the bottom. This is a voltage divider! In this case you would see have the input voltage at the center leg!
If you rotated the pot clockwise the resistor on the top (R3) might be 0 ohms and the all of the resistance 10K might appear at the bottom.
If we went counter clockwise it would be reversed.
If you rotated the almost to the end you might have 2K resistance at the top and 8K at the bottom. Imagine there was 9V at the top, use the voltage divider to calculate the voltage at the center.
Transistors modeled as a current controlled resistor
With these ideas we can now look at the transistor, which is the heart of the Rangemaster. The Rangemaster is an amplifier. It takes a small audio input and produces a louder audio output. The transistor is used to amplify the signal.
A transistor has three legs. For NPN and PNP transistors the legs are called: Emitter, Base, and Collector. The Emitter is leg with the arrow. The Base is in the middle.
To explain how the transistor works we will model it as a current controlled resistor. For this discussion we will use the NPN version of the Rangemaster schematic and the transistor will be NPN.
Take a look at the diagram above. Imagine the transistor drawn on the left is in your Rangemaster circuit. Imagine that inside the device is a resistor. The value of this resistor is controlled by the amount of current present at the base. Outside the transistor the Rangemaster has a 10K resistor (POT1) at the collector and a 3K9 resistor at the emitter.
With no current applied to the base there is so much resistance you can image that there is no connection at all. We would see about 9V at the collector.
When a small amount of current is applied to the base the resistance between the collector and emitter starts to decrease. Imagine the collector/emitter path is now showing 100K resistance. Now we have a voltage divider! You could use the formula above to calculate the voltage at the collector!
With more current applied to the base the C/E path might go down to 10K resistance. Using the voltage divider formula the voltage present at the collector goes down as more of the electron traffic goes through the 3K9 resistor.
With a lot of current at the base the C/E path might go as low as 100 ohms and the voltage at the collector would go even lower!
Did you notice when the current at the base goes up the voltage at the collector goes down. And conversely, when the current at the base is low the voltage at the collector goes up. A transistor amplifies because it allows out circuit to turn small changes in current to larger swings in voltage.
Notice the diagram above. When the current is high the voltage is low! This is an inverting amplifier. The signal at the output will be a mirror or opposite of the input signal.
Biasing the Transistor
There is a little more needed to make this work. Imagine the incoming signal might swing between +1v and -1v. When the input is above 0V the transistor starts working. When it’s 0V or less the CE path is closed off.
Look at the diagram above. The signal going in is a sine wave but the signal coming out is getting chopped. This would cause some distortion! In this case it probably wouldn’t sound too good. It also explains why your transistor circuits sometimes don’t sound right!
To make the amplifier work we need to bias the transistor so with no input the output settles at a point somewhere between the extremes.
Take a look at the diagram above. Here I’ve added R1 and R2 from the original schematic. These provide an amount of current to the base so that it sits around 7V. With this arrangement positive input pushes more current to the base opening the CE path and lowering the output. When the input signal is negative this pulls current from the base which increases the resistance of the CE path and the voltage at the output goes up.
Biasing is the term that describes applying a DC current to the base of a transistor such that it is it near the middle of it’s range. It needs bias so the output can go up and down from the bias point.
All 4 of the resistors play a part of the amplifier. R1 (470K) and R2 (68K) provide the current to bias the transistor. POT1 (10K) and R3 (3K9) also determine where the bias should be since the lowest voltage output is determined by the voltage divider created by these two resistances. Imagine the CE path had 0 ohms resistance.
? = 9V * 3.9 / (10 + 3.9)
? = 9V * 3.9 / 13.9
2.5 = 9V * 0.28
This concludes the discussion of the Rangemaster. From here the goal is to build your own! Along the way think of this discussion.

Stompboxology was a news letter put out in the early days of DIY when the internet was young. It never caught on and it and it’s creator mysteriously vanished. That said I found this issue to contain one of the best discussions of transistors for stompbox usage I have read. It also contains a discussion of core concepts for electrical engineering that you will need to know to build effects pedals.

Some months back I noticed this display in Draenor and decided I would name each and every one of these. Since I’ve a spot to share, I thought I’d do so now here. Each row is designated as a letter top to bottom, and each column a number. I only went up to 8 as the right most display is identical to the left. Row D refers to the bags. A1. Ground Flame- Fireweed reduced to a powder, used to give heat and a smokey flavor. A2. Starflower petals (Ground)- Used as a stimulant in dishes. Most frequently used in preparing breakfest. A3. Salt (Sea)- You know what salt is, I hope. A4. Vraetin Petals- Petals of the vraetin flower, dried. A5. Moonlit Herbs- Though it provides a flavor not unlike oregano, it is usually used decoratively, garnishing dishes and giving them a soft glow. A6. Pharii- A mix of Chakbo Flour and lunarblossom, used to thicken and color. A7. Talador Orchid- Used more often as a garnish than a direct ingredient, though its stamen are often used in cooking. A8. Kela- A spice not unlike nutmeg or mace in flavor. B1. Rice- You know what rice is. B2. Skian’bo (ground)- A slightly sweet, pepper like spice. Ground up. B3. Dragon dust- Dust collected from faerie dragons. Though more typically used for its magical properties, some dishes make use of it. B4. Skian’bo (whole)- A slightly sweet, pepper like spice. Whole dried seeds. B5. Purple lentils- They are lentils, but purple. B6. Anchorite’s Weed- A spice, functionally similar to ajwain. B7. Chakbo Flour- The dried ends of Chakbo leaves turned into a powder. Used typically as a thickener for sauces and soups, but can be use do bread things. B8. Lunarblossom- Though more often used as gifts to show affection, lunar blossom is sometimes utilized in cooking, used more for color than its flavor which is comparable to roses. Seeds of this plant are dried to make Skian’bo. C1. Shimmerspores- Spores collected from shimmershrooms. C2. Or’vren- Talador Orchid Stamen. C3. Vraetin (Ground)- Seeds of the vraetin flower, a climbing plant. Most comparable to cumin. C4. Slumberbloom powder- A spice with sedative properties. Usually used in dinner to add flavor and help one to get to sleep, or make sure the kids are not up all night. C5. Saffron- Self-explanatory C6. Agrin Root- The root of the Agrin plant. Most comparable in taste and use to ginger. C7. Riot Dust- Ground riotvine. Typically used more for remedies than it is for its almost pungent flavor. C8. Violet Curry- A spice blend that ultimately holds a violet hue. Used to make curries or just to spice things. D1. Dried Arinor- Dried Arinor petals. A stimulant, often used in making drinks. D2. Draenor Pumpkin Seeds- The seeds of a large yellowish-white spiky gourd grown by the draenei, typically referred to as pumpkins. More often roasted than not. D3. Chakbo Leaves (Sliced)- Sliced up chakbo leaves. Used similarly to aloe or cactus in food. D4. Starflower Petals- Used as a stimulant in drinks. D5. Arrowbloom Petals- Petals of Arrowbloom. Has a taste most comparable to basil. D6. Draenor Pumpkin Spines- The spines of the draenor pumpkin. Typically soaked then boiled before eating. D7. Pink Lentils- They are lentils, but pink. D8. Flytrap Teeth- The teeth petals of the Gorgrond Flytrap. Tart in flavor.

The GunCon[a], known as the G-Con in Europe, is a family of gun peripherals designed by Namco for the PlayStation consoles. The original controllers used traditional light gun technology, while newer controllers use LED tracking technology.
Background[edit]
The first GunCon NPC-103 (G-Con 45 in Europe) was bundled with the PlayStation conversion of Time Crisis. To make the gun affordable to consumers, the force feedback feature of the Time Crisis arcade gun was omitted, and an additional fire button was included in lieu of releasing a pedal controller for the game's ducking mechanic.[1] A second version of the GunCon, known as the GunCon 2 NPC-106 (G-Con 2 in Europe), was bundled with the PlayStation 2 conversion of Time Crisis II and Time Crisis 3. Time Crisis 4 came out for the PlayStation 3 bundled with the GunCon 3 NC-109[2][3][4][5] (G-Con 3 in Europe[6]). In Japan, all three GunCon models were also available for sale as a separate accessory outside of a game bundle.
Prior to the GunCon, the Konami Justifier was the first light gun peripheral for the PlayStation and a few games support it. With the exception of the North American localization of Elemental Gearbolt and Maximum Force,[7] games that support the Justifier are not compatible with the GunCon and vice versa. This was because Namco designed the GunCon so that it would only work with Namco games.[8]Electronic Gaming Monthly's Crispin Boyer said that a Namco public relations representative was shocked when he informed him that he'd tried the GunCon with Maximum Force (not a Namco game) and confirmed that it worked.[8]
Models[edit]
GunCon[edit]
The black GunCon controller for the PlayStation
The GunCon controller (known as G-Con 45 in Europe) uses the cathode ray timing method to determine where the barrel is aimed at on the screen when the trigger is pulled. It features a button below the barrel on either side of the gun (buttons A and B, both performing the same function) for auxiliary in-game control, such as to take cover and reload in Time Crisis. The controller is released in black in Japan, and gray (and eventually, in orange) in both Europe and North America. The controller is compatible with some PlayStation 2 GunCon titles, but is not compatible with PlayStation 3 due to its lack of controller ports. Many games that support it allow the A and B buttons to be swapped, making it comfortable for both right and left-handed players.
Tumblr media
GunCon 2[edit]
GunCon 2, Japanese domestic model: a d-pad has been added to the rear of the gun
GunCon 2 (G-Con 2 in Europe) features a smaller body, as well as a more rounded shape when compared with the original GunCon. The side buttons, A and B, have been moved rearward to a position directly above the trigger. Two new smaller buttons, SELECT and START, have been added to the left side of the shaft. Prominent additions to this second GunCon model is a D-pad at the back of the gun barrel and a C button added at the bottom of the gun handle. These new buttons served to open new gameplay opportunities, such as character movement in Dino Stalker or the ability to use two guns at once in Time Crisis II. The gun uses a USB connection as opposed to a PlayStation controller port of the GunCon 1 and also hooks into the video signal of the console (either composite video or the Y signal of component video). The controller is released in black in Japan, blue in Europe, and orange in North America. It is not compatible with original PlayStation titles or PlayStation 3 titles. The GunCon 2, with compatible games, can work on older models of the PlayStation 3 featuring any form of hardware-based PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility.
GunCon 3[edit]
GunCon 3, Japanese domestic model: two analogue sticks have been added to the gun for advanced aiming/movement controls
The GunCon 3 utilizes two infrared LEDs as markers, placed on the left and right sides of the screen. An image sensor in the muzzle tracks the markers as reference points for determining where the gun is pointing on the screen. As opposed to the GunCon and GunCon 2, which are only compatible with CRT-based displays, the GunCon 3 supports a wide variety of display types, including LCD and Plasma.[9]
The GunCon 3 features a 'sub-grip', mounted underneath the barrel and extending to the left side for use with the left hand. On the sub-grip is an analog stick and two shoulder buttons, like in a modern gamepad. At the back end of the gun barrel is another analog stick and two buttons, B1 and B2, underneath. Another two buttons, C1 and C2, are placed along the left side of the barrel. The analog sticks allow the player to play first-person shooting games with manual aiming/firing of the light gun.
In regards to appearance, all Japanese GunCon 3 controllers feature a black coloring, though due to US toy gun laws, the US/PAL release of the GunCon 3 controllers are molded of bright orange plastic. This controller has been criticized for being uncomfortable for left-handed gamers.

iGunCon[edit]
iGunCon for iOS was released on July 21, 2011, which allows players to use an iPhone or iPod Touch in a similar fashion to the GunCon on Time Crisis 2nd Strike, an iOS exclusive entry in the Time Crisis series.[11]iGunCon, along with Time Crisis 2nd Strike, was pulled from the app store in March of 2015.[12]
Reception[edit]
Electronic Gaming Monthly's four-person 'review crew' gave the original GunCon scores of 7.5, 7.0, 8.0, and 7.5 out of 10. They criticized Namco's decisions to make it compatible only with Namco games and make Namco games incompatible with other light guns, but praised the GunCon's extreme precision and accuracy, in particular when firing near the edge of the screen (a common trouble spot for light guns). Lead reviewer Crispin Boyer was also pleased with the low price of the GunCon/Time Crisis bundle.[8]

Machine learning for Data Analysis, Week 1: Building a Decision Tree with Python
First I selected also an age variable (quantitative) and gender variable, but ended up using only these three for simplicity:
Y=Depressed (1=depressed, 0=not depressed)
X0=Alcohol_bin (1=heavy drinkers/more than twice a week)
X1=Dinner_bin (1=DO NOT often have dinner with family, twice a week or less) (this I turned around compared to before, so that 1 stands for “being neglected” and therefor is similar to 1 being depressed and 1 drinking alcohol)
Output:
Tumblr media
Here is the model. which classified 87% of the sample correctly.
Tumblr media
Above is the confusion matrix. Here we see that even though the accuracy score showed 87%, it is only the non-depressed that are classified correctly. 865 are true negatives, but 0 is true positives. The 129 in the bottom left, shows the amount of false negatives, classifying depressed as non-depressed. On the top right we see the false positives, classifying a non-depressed as a depressed, which is zero as well. From this we see that the model classifies non-depressed well but not depressed.
Tree: The blue leaf node shows that out of those who are likely to eat dinner often with family (first split is by variable X1), and NOT drink alcohol often, 110 are classified as depressed (10%) and 964 as not depressed. The red leaf shows those who eat with family often (more than twice a week) but do drink alcohol more often, and here 7 is depressed (13%) and 46 is not. The  yellow shows those who do NOT have dinner with family very often and do NOT drink alcohol, and here 56 is depressed (17%) and 279 is not, and last the green leaf node shows those who do NOT have dinner with family often and do drink alcohol, and 9 is classified as depressed (32%) and 19 not depressed.
Most people are placed in the group of not drinking and often eating family dinner, and the highest depression percentage is definitely shown in the group with few family dinners and more alcohol.
My Code pasted:
from pandas import Series, DataFrame import pandas as pd import numpy import os import matplotlib.pylab as plt from sklearn.model_selection import train_test_split from sklearn.tree import DecisionTreeClassifier from sklearn.metrics import classification_report import sklearn.metrics
