I love looking into taxonomy, so I made taxonomical names and did a little redesigning/headcanonifying for the great fairies, malanya, lord of the mountain, and the blupees For Lord of the mountain and malanya, since they’re horse adjacent, their genus is Equus Ferus, which contains wild horses, horses, and przewalski’s horse.
For lord, the species name specifically is Cerulean. I chose that because for fucks sake he’s blue /lh. But also because I like to think that the fairies and their tendency to be blue is what inspired the hero’s tunic coloration. and perhaps that maybe blue is the preferred color of the royal family for said reason. who knows.
And for Malanya, the species name is Deus, meaning God. He’s the god of horses. But I still consider him to be a fairy, and closer related to the great fairies, so you can see his spooky little head under his mask in his picture. For the Blupees, they actually have two Genus names, That being Tyto (Barn owls) and Lepus (Hares and Jackrabbits), along with the Cerulean species name to match their very horsie counterpart. With the rest of the fairies, they take up the genus name Diva, meaning Goddess.  For Tera, we have her species name being Desertum Album, making her “White Desert Goddess”. My initial thoughts when I saw her for the first time was “oh cool albino fairy” and i really rain with it in my design for her. I really like how her scales and lipstick contrast her pinkness.  Also, when it came to making the Hyrulean and Great fairies, I decided I wanted to go for a kind of mermaid-y thing with making their tops(?) more scaly looking and giving them fin ears instead of winged ears.  For Mija, her species name is Lacus Purpura, making her “Purple Lake Goddess”. I really really pushed it with the lake thing. I know she’s near the lake but she’s not exactly on the lake. Some of these names are a little bit of a stretch. For Kaysa, her species name is Mons Rosa, making her “Rose Mountain Goddess.” I know she’s more pink than a rose color but i think it fits. I wish i had changed the color of her eyeshadow, because it’s kind of hard to see and doesn’t really look good against her skintone so if I ever draw her again I intend to change it. And for Cotera, her species name is Valle Aureum, making her “Golden Valley Goddess”. She’s only a valley goddess because she’s right next to Kakiriko and they’re like, under the cliff her fountain is on. Whatever. Whatever. Again, wish I had changed her eyeshadow color to something softer. It’s just really kind of neon on her face. and it’s just too bright.  For the Hyrulean fairy, their species name is Lepidoteris, which is the order name for butterflies. or well. Lepidoptera is the order name. But yeah butterflies. Originally they *were* going to look more like butterflies but they just kinda look like bats to me now. They’re the size of butterflies, so I suppose that’s what counts?

i think more people should aknowledge malanya and how the stables are modeled after them. like, that has so much potential in terms of lore???
I mean, Malanya is kind of a folk spirit, he's at a similar level to the great fairies where there are legends about him but people have also visited and can actually see him. Unlike the rumors of dragons who can only be seen by children and those blessed by Hylia, Malanya is more real to the people. Also stables are the most widespread part of Hyrule, they're literally everywhere (except gerudo desert but like horses can't go there anyway so there wouldn't be a point).
There's also a big thing about travelers in this world, like those little statues with alters that you see everywhere and is usually hiding a korok? those are referred to as "travelers' guardian deities", being some kind of wandering traveller is so common in this Hyrule that there are dozens of waypoints where there are beds and people to hold on to your horse and to tell you directions.
Anyway I think that the valuing of a good steed and the abundance of traveling make Malanya a really important god. Unlike Hylia or the golden three, he's tangible and provides important services and is also a silly guy. He's well known enough that there's literally a path and a bridge to get to his spring, though I do think that a lot of the information about him was lost during the calamity, so though people knew of him, they didn't know quite where to find him.
I also prescribe to the theory that there's some connection between Malanya the horse god whose ambient music is the Lon Lon Ranch theme, and Malon, the og zelda horse girl. It wouldn't make sense with Malanya's design but maybe being turned into a god for a 10,000+ years transed her gender or something.

So I decided to make Malon the goddess of Horses! As she should be! Hope you like her!
Imagine going to the fountain, and she finds out that you somehow lost Epona..... I would be absolutely terrified! If this is how the horse fountains deity looked. Imagine what Wild would feel like after meeting Malon? Would she react when Wild brings the chain and she sees Time? I feel like she would be like 'well I'll be... There's my fairy boy..'

Goddess Malanya
Divinity of Travelers, Horses, Merchants, Nomads, the Poor and Farmers.
...
Malanya is worshipped by almost everyone in the Era of Wilderness but before then the Royal family disapproved of her worship (putting it lightly) and most had to keep her shrines hidden away. Malanya was once a mortal Gerudo traveler who was so devout to Din that the Goddess offered her divinity. (aka Din was embarrassed what her son Demise had become and adopted a new kid)

“Well now,” he hummed. “You’re late. I expected you to seek my aid sooner, little Hero.”
“I-I’m sorry,” Link stammered, caught off guard. He'd expected Link? “I wanted to ask…”
“About your Epona,” Malanya interrupted. He waved a glittering hand and, for a moment, Link’s heart sank. Malanya sounded and looked so casual, so dismissive, that Link expected an instant no.
“It has been one hundred years,” Malanya said, waving a finger in Link’s face. Sparkles landed in his hair. “Yet your Epona still demands I send her back to you. She worries for you, little Hero. Ah, Heroes and their steeds…I admit, I am always impressed by the strength of your dedication to each other. Not many mortals care for their steeds as much as you and your past incarnations have. Why, the Hero of Time was never without his own Epona, and the Hero of Twilight took pity on Ganondorf’s mare, claiming her as his own…Ah, but it is not them we need to speak of.” Malanya drew himself back up, stretching. “Reviving horses takes energy, little Hero. It requires much of my power and energy. To revive a horse that’s been gone for so long…Well, it will exhaust me.”
“Do you need more endura carrots?” Link asked. But, really, when were things ever so easy?
“Ha! I would not say no to such a treat. But no. No, no. If I am to use so much of my power, I want to ensure it will be worth it. She died for you once, little Hero. Can you protect her this time?”
*
During the siege of Highland Stable, the giant stallion comes to Link and Yuki's aid. After the battle, the duo go in search of Malanya.
But if Malanya is going to even consider resurrecting a horse that's been dead for one hundred years, he's going to need some incentive.

Things I’ve learned from rereading the botw creating a champion book:
Sidon was light grey colored up until they rendered him for the game
The concept art of modern guitar playing Link says he’s popular with the ladies
We could’ve had horses that sway to music and poke their heads through window to say hi to you ;-;
Malanya’s concept art is tingle-level terrifying
Wind waker Link’s hero clothes are waterproof

My Special Horse
Fandom: Breath of the Wild
Summary: Her life was lived in a limited sort of freedom until he came along to show her what freedom could really feel like. They roamed Hyrule on a grand adventure, facing many challenges on the way. This is the story of Link’s horse.

Her last day of true independence was spent as any other, roaming the fields with her herd. They grazed on the same grass she had eaten her whole life, mindful of the same monsters who protected their long established territory. The breeze was blowing into her face, and she was unaware of the hylian crawling behind her until he had leaped onto her back. She bucked around wildly, the intruder atop her clinging to her mane with one hand, patting her neck with the other and making frantic soothing sounds with his voice. After a minute of this she calmed, accepting the foreign weight on her back. The hylian nudged her sides with his boots and directed her to the small settlement at the far side of the field. He communicated with others of his kind, and she found herself outfitted with a saddle and bridle identical to those worn by the horses who passed by with their riders. The hylian who had taken her offered an apple, which she ate from his hand. He made a joyful sound. He smelled of the wild, happiness, and freedom. She allowed him to climb on once more and she felt him shift his weight to speak softly into her ear. She did not understand the words, but she could feel their meaning. “You’re my special horse.”
They traveled to places she never knew could exist, far beyond her tiny, tiny home. They explored many settlements, some larger than others, full of many kinds of beings who walked on only two legs. She refused to gallop through the crowded villages for fear of trampling any small children. The hylian on her back was frustrated at first, but realized her intentions quickly and praised her. “You’re my special horse.”
They spent much time traveling the wilderness, him allowing her to follow the roads on her own as was her instinct. When night fell and the screeching swarms of keese swooped at them, he guided her to a quiet area to make camp. They waited silently for the sun to rise again, listening to the sparse sounds of the owls, crickets, and the crackling fire. His head drooped, eyes slipping shut, and he accepted a few hours of sleep. She stood a careful watch for the infested bones of monsters long gone that so often sprang out of the earth with no warning. Occasionally he awakened with a shout, breathing fast and heavy, grabbing for his weapon. She startled for a moment before neighing softly, bending down to assure herself of his safety. The hylian smelled of fear, confusion, and loneliness. He wrapped his arms around her neck, pressing his damp eyes into her coat and whispering gratefully. “You’re my special horse.”
They discovered a couple of challenges in the corners of the land designed for horses and their riders. After many attempts, they obtained special gear for her to wear. He brought her to female hylians who were more than happy to equip the gear and decorate her mane and tail. Her rider fed her apples and carrots as she stood still for her mane to be braided. He gave her words of congratulations and pride. “You’re my special horse.”
They passed many other traveling horses and their hylians, sometimes pausing to greet them. She eyed her wild cousins frolicking in the fields, free of burdens but also confined to their homes. On a few occasions, they came across horses that she could feel were unusually special. Her rider dismounted and snuck up behind them, taming them long enough to bring them to a settlement similar to the one he had brought her to that first day. She regarded them with indifference, with just a bit of jealousy. He must have noticed, always ready to assure her as they rode away. “You’re my special horse.”
They adventured together for months, and explored much of the continent. He began to have streaks of recklessness, running her closer and closer to the expansive fields in the center of the land. They ventured near the massive building which sent pulses of evil and death. Eventually there came a day when he had been urging her on for ages now. She was tired and nervous, but kept running. There came a clanking sound, followed by a high pitched beeping. The hylian yelled in panic, kicking her sides and snapping the reins until she had no stamina left. She heard him fumble for his bow, felt a blast of hot energy streak through the air inches from her tail. Much to her displeasure, he directed her to run circles around the monstrosity responsible as he loosed dozens of arrows upon it. He was so close to disposing of it, but he forgot to look ahead as he jerked on the reins. She was forced to almost charge into a tree and halted abruptly, rearing in surprise. Her rider saw another blast of light heading for them and launched himself from her back, sending one last arrow into the monster. She had no time to move out of the path of destruction, and the discharge hit her straight on. Pain erupted through her, and she screamed and fell to the burning grass. The hylian screamed too, forgetting about the dead monster as he rushed to her side. Her legs were numb, her heartbeat slowed, and she drew her last breath as he sobbed into her mane. “You’re my special horse.”
She opened her eyes, finding herself in a lush green field which stretched as far as she could see. The sun gently shone from the brightest blue sky. She was surrounded by other horses. Her face was unobstructed by a bridle, her back absent of a saddle for the first time in a long, long time. She did not question her new circumstances, choosing instead to enjoy her stay in this wonderous new land. An indeterminate amount of time passed, which she spent eating the sweetest grass and bonding with the herd. A few minutes or perhaps an eternity later, she heard a booming voice in her head. “I am Malanya, god of horse kind. Your time in the realm of the living is not yet complete. Come, my child. Your partner is waiting for you.” In a flash of purple light, she was returned to the mortal world. Her hooves landed on a soft layer of pink flower petals. She reared and neighed, reorienting herself to a physical body. The hylian stumbled to her and clung onto her neck in what she had learned was a loving embrace. He smelled of guilt, sorrow, and relief. He dug in his bag for as many treats as she desired. “You’re my special horse.”
Her life was again one of constant travel. He rode her through the whole day, and many nights as well. They came across a beast with the body of a horse, but with the torso of a man. The hylian gave it a wide berth, pretending not to notice the look sent their way. The beast trotted parallel to them for a bit before deciding to send a more obvious message. It whipped out a savage bow, nocked it with a handful of flaming arrows, and shot them at the trespassers. She received an arrow to the side, and she bolted in an attempt to extinguish the burning hair. Her rider growled, letting it grow to a harsh battle cry as he dismounted and met the beast in battle. They fought for a few minutes, the hylian occasionally straddling its back and pummeling it in a violent mockery of his usual riding habits. Eventually the beast gave in and her rider returned. He smelled of protection, anger, and blood. He led her to a creek and gently splashed water on her to soothe the burn, murmuring equally soothingly. “You’re my special horse.”
He discovered a unique saddle and bridle, and was quick to equip them on her. He ran away until he was a speck in the distance before bringing his fingers to his lips and letting out a piercing whistle. She experienced the unnatural sensation of dispersing into bright blue wisps of light, only to rematerialize right in front of him. She had seen him do this a few times herself. Now he was able to call upon her from anywhere in the world, and she would be there in an instant. He stopped leaving her with the other hylians at the small settlements, instead abandoning her whenever he bored of riding or when she got herself stuck. He seemed pleased when he realized he could whistle for her rather than wait for others to retrieve her from precarious positions. He always followed his whistle with a quick greeting before settling on her back and starting off towards his destination. “You’re my special horse.”
They visited the corners of the land once more. He left her alone while he completed whatever business he had with the other people. Each time he reunited with her, he seemed different. More powerful, more aware. He had her take him to the raised area of land near the field of death and disappeared at the top for a few days. When he finally came back, he had something to show her. It was a small contraption which vaguely resembled a horse, but there was nothing natural about it. The hylian swung his leg around the object’s back and suddenly sped off with a loud rumble. He looked over his shoulder to where she was staring, betrayed, and called out to her. “You’re my special horse.”
She stood there for days more, waiting for the faraway whistle to summon her. When one eventually happened, he patted her in apology and rode her seemingly for the sake of riding her. He became distracted by every little thing, pulling on her reins every few feet to bring her to an annoyed halt. He grew reckless once more, and it was not long before he had forced her too close to a steep cliff. She lost her footing and plummeted to the bottom, dead before he reached her. She did not hear him say something sadly, regretfully. “You’re my special horse.”
She was back under the care of Malanya, but soon was summoned once again. Her rider gave her carrots and apples and pats, then left her to stand in front of the overgrown flower among the butterflies. He called for her less and less frequently, and these reunions nearly always ended in a tragic accident. She visited the god’s domain often, spending almost as much time there as in the corporeal world. She listened to the hylian tell her the same words, missing the days when they were spoken with complete truth. “You’re my special horse.”
Many months, or maybe even years, passed. Then came the strangest day of her fragmented life. She was minding her own business near Malanya’s spring when her body diffused into golden white light rather than blue. She was instantly transported to the field of death close to the massive building. Her rider appeared beside her and climbed on with purpose. Together, they stared up at a giant demon which reeked of evil. The hylian directed her to gallop around the demon, staying dangerously close to the malicious substance. He shot curiously bright arrows at the demon before they made their way back to the head. He dismounted, running a few yards away as the demon roared. The mouth opened and released a vicious pink light across the field, straight towards her. She was unable to escape, and succumbed to the unbearable evil of the blast. The last thing she saw was her rider using the updraft of the fire burning around her to ascend into the sky to deliver the killing blow. He glanced down, mournful yet determined. “You’re my special horse.”
She woke up in the spiritual realm once again. Surely, after so long, her rider would let her have her eternal rest. She had grown fond of him, but it was time for her to move on. She was ready to enjoy her life after life alongside the other herd, exploring the endless green field under the impossibly blue sky. These thoughts had barely crossed her mind when she heard the familiar voice of Malanya. So it was not to be. She braced herself for the dizzying feeling of regaining her body and greeted the hylian. He patted her neck and gave her treats as usual. He smelled of tiredness, triumph, and hope. He spoke fondly into her ear as they rode out into a new world. “You’re my special horse.”
“And you’ll be mine forever.”

Malanya is pretty cool. That's really all I have to say.
...
also did you know that in the Japanese version she's just called マロン (Malon)? That's cool. I'll let y'all decide what that means.
I'm slowly compiling words that might be Hylian in origin. Malanya is one of those. It probably means "horse god" but that's not the important part.
Sometimes I think I have too many projects. This little korok is busy.

Got the spotted horse!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I named him Cookie, short for Cookies 'N Cream 🍪
I may or may not have been eating a cookie while I got this horse and that definitely did not influence the name lol nope :)
If anyone else wants this horse, it's actually for a quest from Lester, the stable guy at Lookout Landing. It might take time to appear for you, depending on how much of the story you've done I think. And the mini-stable needs to be completed.
Tumblr media
Sir, please turn around—
Tumblr media
Also, I saw another spotted horse in the mini-stable after registering Cookie, which makes me wonder if I can find more spotted horses now? Hmm.
