A new analysis out Friday confirms that the number of U.S. households with kids that report not having enough food to eat has surged in the months since corporate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia joined Senate Republicans in refusing to extend the expanded Child Tax Credit benefit beyond mid-December.

"Continuation of the advance CTC payments could help children avoid food insufficiency, with immediate and lifelong personal and societal benefits."

Data from the Household Pulse Survey (HPS), a nationally representative internet survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, shows that from April 27 to May 9, 15% of households with children reported food insufficiency—defined as sometimes or often not having enough food to eat in the past week. In early August, the percentage of families with kids that reported struggling with hunger was roughly 9.5%.

Food has become more expensive in recent months as a handful of corporate grocery giants and meat, egg, and dairy conglomerates have raised prices while cutting frontline worker pay and raking in record profits amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But Manchin and the GOP's decision to allow the enhanced CTC benefit to expire at the end of last year is making it even harder for millions of families to make ends meet.

Right-wing lawmakers let the enlarged CTC lapse despite ample evidence that the popular measure improved the lives of children nationwide. In January, the first month since July 2021 that eligible families didn't receive a monthly payment of up to $300 per child, 3.7 million kids were thrown into poverty.

In a guest blog post published Friday by the Economic Policy Insitute, Julia Raifman, assistant professor at Boston University School of Public Health, and Allison Bovell-Ammon, Director of Policy Strategy for Children's HealthWatch at Boston Medical Center, wrote:

"In prior work using HPS data, we found that the advance CTC was associated with a 26% decrease in food insufficiency in households with children relative to households without children. Our findings were consistent with those of other researchers, who found that the advance CTC was associated with a 25% decline in poverty and improved dietary quality for children.

In a new pre-print using HPS data, we find expiration of the advance CTC was associated with a 12% increase in food insufficiency in households with children relative to households without children by February—and rates of food insufficiency continued to climb since February."

"While HPS data are not directly comparable to data collected prior to the pandemic," Raifman and Bovell-Ammon noted, "rates of food insufficiency in March–April 2022 were about three to four times pre-pandemic levels."

"Food insufficiency among families with children poses a short- and long-term moral and economic threat to the United States," they wrote. "Even brief disruptions in access to food can have lasting consequences."

The pair continued: "Not having enough to eat often disrupts children's cognitive and emotional development and education. This was the case for a child who disclosed that the reason she was fidgeting and not paying attention in class was that she did not have enough food to eat. There may be lifelong ramifications of not having enough to eat in childhood, including increased likelihood of poor health outcomes and avoidable medical expenditures across the lifespan."

Despite Manchin's baseless and dehumanizing claim that parents would use federal cash to buy drugs, Raifman and Bovell-Ammon pointed out that several analyses "indicate families with low incomes overwhelmingly used advance CTC payments on basic needs for children, including food, rent, utilities, clothing, and educational costs. There is also no evidence suggesting a reduction in employment among parents in families receiving CTC payments."

It's not too late, Raifman and Bovell-Ammon stressed, for Manchin and the GOP to change course.

"As Congress turns its attention to the next reconciliation package, there is an opportunity to reinstate the expanded CTC monthly payments," the pair wrote. "Amidst continued inflation, rising food insufficiency in households with children, and the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to affect work, health, and the economy, continuation of the advance CTC payments could help children avoid food insufficiency, with immediate and lifelong personal and societal benefits."

"The most recent wave of HPS data," Raifman and Bovell-Ammon noted, "show that food insufficiency is concentrated in the lowest-income households with children."

"Implementing an expanded CTC without exclusions due to work or immigration status will best reach children in families with the greatest need, to the benefit of all children and society," they added. "While some policymakers have considered work requirements to receive CTC benefits, such requirements carry an administrative burden for states and families that often prevents those who most need benefits from receiving them and results in negative outcomes."

Smiffina Episodes - Episode 240

Smithy and Kerry are handed over to one of the Radford goons to be murdered and disposed of. At the station June calls off the raid because it hasn't been signed off by a senior officer. Panicking Rob tells her it's all in the bag, they just need to do the raid. They know they'll get them - it's their only chance. June reluctantly agrees.

Smithy tells David that the police will never rest until they find their two missing officers. He says they'll promise to never repeat anything they've seen and heard and that they should just let them go. He tells him it's inadmissable evidence and would be thrown out of court. David laughs. "Shall I just let you go then?"

The van races to the club, June gives them orders and tells them it's got to go without a hitch. Rob and Ken are worried as Smithy still hasn't rung like he said he would. As the gunman prepares - the van arrives outside. Kerry sobs how sorry she is to Smithy. "You didn't have to come back." "Yes I did." Just as he's about to shoot the first one - David comes in and tells them the club is being raided and to dispose of the gun.

Rob runs upstairs and comes face to face with Irene as Ken finds David. The police start to search for drugs and Ken splits off to find Smithy and Kerry. He insists that they can't get away with what they've done but Smithy says they have to - they can't be found there or tell what they've done.

No drugs are found in the club and the raid is a complete bust. Smithy and Kerry appear with the cover story have just 'having a drink and getting caught up in it'. Rob finds Wayne Radford and orders him to empty his pockets - finally some drugs are found! Even if just on him.

In custody Wayne is shocked to see Kerry in full uniform. She's scared he'll blab but Smithy assures her he won't, even he's not stupid enough to cause a full scale investigation into his family. Smithy covers with June, telling her that Kerry was having a full scale crisis about being a copper and that because she was off sick they went somewhere they 'wouldn't be seen' so she could talk about it properly. He asks her not to tell anyone that they were at the club when the raid happened - she does, with Ken and Rob taking the flack.

...Until Wayne shoots his mouth off in interview, in front of Gina, about an undercover officer being in the club.

Gina reports it to Adam, who calls for June. He questions her about David Radford having a relationship with one of the officers. She has no idea at all - but it doesn't take long for the penny to drop. Gina is adamant that Kerry would have taken the undercover job - and is furious she's dragged Smithy along with her.

Kerry tells Gina it's all rubbish, Gina tells her to wait and not go anywhere else. Kerry asks why and Gina outright says she doesn't believe Kerry is telling the truth. She goes to talk to Smithy. Smithy knows he can't bluff Gina and tries to tell a version of the truth that sounds innocent. Gina knows what he's doing and is curious why he'd do it given that Kerry made his life hell with the rape allegation that never was. She tells him she backed him then and she'd back him now.

"... I don't know what you're talking about, ma'am."

"I'm not an idiot! I know exactly what Kerry has been up to!"

"Honestly ma'a-"

"Look Smithy, your job is on the line here! If she goes down, you go down with her! Is that what you want? To lose your job because some silly cow couldn't take no for an answer?"

And Smithy, being loyal stupid Smithy, refuses to take Gina's lifeline offer.

Smithy admits to the other three that Gina is on to them, but urges them to stick to the same story as they'd be home and dry. There's nothing she can prove.

"Wanna bet?"

In the canteen Ken and Rob panic and Rob tries to blame Kerry. Smithy points out he put his neck on the line to get Rob and Ken out of trouble and they're going to pay him back by doing the same for Kerry. Rob just scoffs and asks him why he's going out of his way to protect her. Kerry looks at him, clearly wondering the same thing.

In Gina's office, Irene and David enjoy playing word games with the truth, but ultimately deny knowing Kerry and say she wasn't in the club and Wayne must have his facts wrong. David does know a blonde Kerry, but she can't be a copper. She's far too irresponsible for a role like that.

Both women, whilst waiting for David to speak to Wayne's solicitor, clearly know the truth and they both know that the other knows the truth. They make a formidible pairing.

Gina confronts Kerry in the locker rooms and tells her that she knows what happened and, not only that, she's about to make it her mission to ensure she gets thrown out of the MET. (and away from Smithy!)

Outside Rob doesn't know when to let things lie - he follows Kerry out and begs her for some information against the Radfords. She tells him she has nothing - but in her bag there are passports that she took from the stack in the office...

Smithy follows Kerry out and tells her to get some rest. She asks him why he risked his life and job for her. He replies "Why do you think?" She tries to kiss him and he pulls away, telling her she doesn't need that now and he hurries back inside.

At a high rise carpark, Kerry waits for a car to approach her. Inside is David - and she shows him the passports she stole. "You better get in."

A-T-2 249 Y Records Pt. 2

Second look at Bristol's Y Records (pt.1 here A-T-2 049.) Y was set up in 1980 by The Splits and The Pop Group manager Disc O'Dell, it would fold in 1983. Here are a few more of my favourites from their catalogue, all released in 1982

This cover of Bali Ha'i from the 1949 musical South Pacific became a cult mutant disco favourite. Optima Music picked this up for reissue https://optimomusic.bandcamp.com/album/bali-hai. On the bandcamp page they point out Captain Sensible (The Damned) had recently had a number 1 in the UK with Happy Talk, which is also from the musical South Pacific. Angela Jaeger provides the vocal, she was soon to join another Y act Pigbag

Mouth - Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Winter 1982 Y released The Birth Of Y compilation on it was a new track form Mouth called Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Mouth has released two singles on Y, they're most notable for having Paul (Nellee) Hooper in the band. Nellee Hooper was also a member of Maximum Joy. The band were formed by Janine Rainforth and included members of two Bristol post-punk bands The Glaxo Babies and The Pop Group. I shared the extraterrestrial single White and Green Place (Extraterrestrial Mix) on my previous post. Maximum Joy released their only album in 1982 Station M.X.J.Y. Demon king of a famous wuxia stallion novel where he gets all the girls also is the most powerful in the world and is overall unstopable, like gary stu levels of character, suddenly gets transmigated as the world's villainess from a western romance novel he heard in a passing story from one of his many many model girls.

The plot of the stallion male lead novel is absolutely tame and easy, almost boting from its complexity.

The hero lived in a world once upon a time with his only family menber, adding in a bit of a mysterious background as to why there is no one else in his family and what it coukd all mean.

Then a tragedy hits! His only family dies! And its not only a minor casual death, it was a murder!

Vengace! The boy can only think as he goes to cuktivate under the strongest of cultivators and become the strongest so that his family member can rest in peace.

He fails time and time again at becoming strong, often being pranked, tricked and used as a servant instead of being thought like a normal student, but this doesnt stop him at all and after so many setbacks in his life he is finally strong.

Oh but its not only that, he gets to be the strongest of his class, the smartest and most importantly, the most beautiful of them all! Everyone gets so jealous and all the girls swoon at him but out male lead cares none for that, since his only objective is revenge.

And revenge he does! Killing and kilking left and right all the evil teachers, corrupt officials and vilkainous demons tgat get in his was until one faitful day.

His knowledge is full, he has found the killer of his family member.

The demon king.

And not only that, the demon king was planning to kill him because he too is a demon, in fact the heavenly demon! One of the most powerful royal demons from the former demon king!

The story ends as he draws his sword and ends the evil demon begore croening himself emperor of all realms.

Yet, the world becomes a boring haze of black and white, boring and useless to live in. Not a single reason worth living for.

One day a story enters his ears, one from a far land, a young maiden destined to marry a prince, the girl is so kind and beloved that she starts getting suitors from knights to servants to squires to kings and even other demons want her, but she is oblivious to it all, thinking that she is ugly when ifact she one of the most humblest person he has ever heard of. She is stupid is what the demon king thinks, no wonder the heroine falls so easily to the villainess and her obvious traps to make her look like a fool, if it wasnt for the heros and the male lead, the choseb savior who will kill all demons, in love with her then she would be dead or imprisoned.

At the end the horine becomes the next queen alongside tge chosen savior who is revealed to be the long lost brother of the prince and lives a happy ending ruling with kindness, killing all the demons and bringing happyness to the kingdom.

The fairytail ends.

So does his life, awoken in a crucifix of sort, inside a circle with weird inscriptions and weird runes on them, gems and roks laid out.

It was a summoning ritual, he looks at the body that he has been inside of and screams.

Then looks at the mirror and screams even louder.

He is now the villainess, a petty woman in love with the prince, hates to death the heroine and is also the one who will die at the end after abusing her servant for so long who is, in fact, the chosen savior, the male lead she brought as a slave.

He, she, they are both so fucked.
