Weekly Studio Spotlight - Carissa Tanton

This week, we’ve had the pleasure of speaking to Carissa Tanton. A super fun & creative artist & illustrator from North Wales. Carissa works traditionally, ink & paper, to create some beautiful illustrations inspired by the outdoors, her love of tea & the beauty in everyday life. What are your biggest inspirations?

The natural world is my biggest inspiration, whether it’s the landscape, the details of the plants and flowers around me, or the cyclical natures in accordance with the moon and flow of the seasons. I’m also very inspired by the everyday, sitting to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, or the simplicity of ones daily walk in the woods.

How did you start your career in art?

I moved to Paris in 2012 after graduating with a degree in Psychology and English and no idea of what to do next. There I fell in love with art and drawing (and wine and croissants). I slowly started to develop my own drawing practice and when I returned to Wales a couple of years later I went back to college for a year to study art and design. Inspired by minimalism I simplified my practice to just pen and paper and have been drawing ever since.

What is your favourite piece that you have created?

I think it would have to be my continuous sea line drawing. I really love playing with line work, from drawing with closed eyes or my non dominant hand. Continuous line is a playful way to create too and I really love the way this came together and represented the continuous motion of the waves.

What is your biggest challenge with your work?

I feel quite challenged by imposter syndrome as I am mostly self taught and my art comes from a place of playfulness, and sometimes I think I should be a bit more serious. The other challenge is prioritising time to draw, to create and develop my craft, as running your own business involves a lot of other, less fun, things to fill your time with.

If you could trade lives with someone for a day, who would you choose?

Elizabeth Gilbert. Her approach to creativity is so inspiring to me, and she seems to live her life very joyfully with an inspiring group of other creative, thoughtful and strong women as her friendship circle.

What is the most important thing to you in life?

Peace of mind. We live in such a hectic world and our mindset affects everything.

Can you name one of your fondest childhood memories?

My dad is one of 5 children so we have a big extended family with lots of cousins. We used to spend every summer going away together in our caravans, a big group of us and we’d spend every evening sat around a fire and all day in nature, usually at the beach. I loved those summer trips, we’re all quite silly and I just remember laughing a lot.

What do you listen to / watch when you're working?

I love to listen to inspiring podcasts, YouTube videos or audiobooks when I’m working. I’m currently listening to Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer which is filling me with a love of nature.

What would your dream house look like?

It would be very small (less cleaning to do!), filled with white walls, wooden furniture and a few treasured possessions. A huge garden and a beautiful view so I could admire my vegetables and flowers growing whilst I do the washing up or draw.

What has been your biggest achievement in life?

At 31 I still feel like I have so many achievements ahead of me. But so far I think having carved out a job for myself that I adore and means that I get to draw for a living is just magical and unbelievable to me most days.

Other than creating art, how else do you like to relax?

I’m a huge fan of meditation. If I don’t meditate daily then I just feel off. And then the other big love of my life is my garden, I find weeding to be one of the most relaxing pastimes.

Im not an Artist. Hell Im not even a writer.

The stuff I do is for my enjoyment. Im here to portray my love for a very rare Hetalia ship that is 99% dead on tumblr (Me being the 1% that still does art for it lol)

If you want to see something in my style then just send in an ask I’d be more then happy to get to it once I finish out my current ones. - OR

If you want a commission or to see some real artist who are amazing then I will happily point you in the right direction, they deserve the love and fanbase they have. Go support them because they deserve it all. 

Lets see: @bowietea - Has commissions right now and they are a fabulous person. I got a commission off of them and I’ve been so happy with it. (Will buy again!)

@syrupyyy-art - currently commissions are closed but when they open get one, again another artist I got something from and I would happily buy again.

To drive my point home?  I follow 520 accounts on tumblr of artist, writers and overall amazing people who deserve your love and support for what they do. Listed here are just some examples of super awesome people I get to interact with -

and too be honest I look up to every single one of them for inspiration on my artwork or writings. 

So to answer your question anon - sorry but I wont ever do commissions but I hope I gave you enough people to get the art work you desire
