You’re the one with all the pet tarantulas right? How are they doing? Any new ones 👀
Yesssss!!! Mostly all still doing good. Spider talk and pictures under the cut!
I did loose my two Neoholothele incei sadly, (lost as in died not lost in my house that would be horrible in a different way) when winter came. I turned the heater on in my critter room and thanks to seasonal depression didn’t notice soon enough that their enclosures had dried up super fast 😭
But everyone else is doing well and growing so fast! And I added a new friend earlier this month as a birthday present to myself. Got a Brachypelma albiceps. Sex unknown, but named it Spindle 🥰

And a few updated pictures of some of the other babies I’ve shared before:

Tarantula Rankings (Or Which Child I Love the Most)
Sphaerobothria hoffmani / Central American Horned (Female) - my most unique - fantastic eater - fairly active and feisty - creates interesting landscaping in her terrarium - my most expensive - first ‘experienced’ acquisition
Cyriopagopus lividus sp. Green Femur / Cobalt Blue Green Femur (Unsexed) - my first Old World tarantula - I haven’t seen it yet, but I love it - it still might just be a tube of dirt
Acanthoscurria geniculata / Brazilian White Knee (Female) - amazing eater - visually attractive - out and about frequently - not sure if feisty or paranoid - first tarantula I sexed myself - did not die when I accidentally flung her out of her cage... twice.
Acanthoscurria brocklehursti / Brazilian Black and White (Unsexed) Nhandu bhromatus / Brazilian Red and White (Unsexed) - fucking lying cunt that sold it - is not a A. brocklehursti. - idk, just has been endearing - visually my second least favorite - first tarantula I saw doing a long drink, which was hilarious  - originally the runt of the three slings I raised - did not die despite multiple housing crises  - kind of being a dick by just sitting in the same divet, but does come say hi
Brachypelma Tliltocatl albopilosum / Honduran Curly Hair (Unsexed) - actually my favorite to look at - amazingly calm and non-confrontational  - my least favorite because she(?) has been a pet hole lately  - amazing to watch when she does build
Tliltocatl albopilosum /  Nicaraguan Curly Hair (Unsexed) - tiny little thing; smallest sling I’ve worked with - managed to burrow massive tunnels in a very short time - will it upsurp my Honduran? Probably not.
Grammostola pulchripes / Chaco Golden Knee (Unsexed) - has gold knees - probably going to battle for A. brocklehursti’s spot with B. albiceps
Aphonopelma seemani (blue form) / Guatemalan Blue, Blue Stripe Knee, Blue Zebra (Female) - is blue - a big chunky lady - eh, interesting to have by not my ideal - probably has a great personality - is my most XTREME climber
Aphonopelma chalcodes / Mexican/Arizona Blonde (Unsexed) - waiting on receipt - probably going to battle for A. geniculata’s spot.
Brachypelma albiceps / Mexican Golden Red Rump (Unsexed) - waiting on receipt - probably going to battle for A. brocklehursti’s spot.
Idiothele mira / Blue Foot Baboon (Unsexed) - waiting on receipt - totally an impulse purchase * There will be no actual tarantula battles.

I had a male tarantula (Nhandu chromatus, Brazilian Red-and-White) mature recently, and I felt like sharing some tarantula info with everyone. For those of my followers who aren't too familiar with tarantulas, male tarantulas have what's called a "ultimate molt" in which they fully develop their sex organs. They develop big, bulbous pedipalps (the little limbs near the mouth) and tend to get very leggy-looking. At this point, they usually stop eating and only really focus on finding a mate, as they don't usually molt again and consequently they die shortly. Depending on the species and their metabolism, a mature male can live anywhere from 3 months to a couple years. Occasionally, they can have a penultimate molt after the ultimate but they usually don't survive it or live long afterwards.
In the tarantula hobby, it's pretty common for people to sell or trade their mature males to breeders. There's also breeding loans where you agree to ship the male to another person who breeds them and promises you a certain percentage of the resulting spiderlings. I like to send out my males any way that I can because it's kinda sad to just watch them waste away plus it contributes to the continuation of the hobby. This male in particular I sent off through a trade:
Tumblr media
(Notice the legginess I was talking about, mature males are all leg)
For sending off my male, I got 3 spiderlings in return:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first two are of the same species as the male I sent out. It's amazing to think something so small could grow into that, he was about palm-sized and the females of the species are even bigger (fingers crossed one of my slings is a female). The third one in the little jar is a Brachypelma albiceps, aka the Mexican Golden Rump. It's a species I've always wanted but never had. They grow up to look like this:
Tumblr media
That little guy in comparison to the other two is about half the size, but that gap's gonna keep getting bigger because B. albiceps are extremely slow growers while N. chromatus are heavy eaters who grow fast. That mature male I raised from a sling and he matured in about 3 years, while I have a sling of a similar Brachypelma species that I got at the same time that's still a little transparent spiderling and has many years of growing left before it reaches maturity.
So there's your weird spider info! I tag my tarantula/spider posts as "/tarantulas" and "/spiders" just in case any of my followers are squeamish about spiders and don't want to see these kind of posts.
