Randomly Selected Botanical Terms: Phyllaries
Flowers in the aster family have one of the most recognizable shapes in botany – a circle with a series of petals surrounding it. If you were asked to draw a flower, there is a good chance your drawing would look something like a sunflower, a daisy, a cosmos, or an aster. It’s one of the most basic flower shapes, and yet it isn’t a single flower; it’s a pseudanthium – a false flower. This is…

#MentzeliaInvolucrata / #SandBlazingstar, my new love. Check out those #BRACTS! White with a dark green edge and such a pretty shape. The flowers are gorgeous too. Ghost flower (Mohavea confertiflora, in the last photo) has evolved to mimic sand blazingstar. It lacks nectar of its own and relies on looking similar to the blazingstar with the addition of a marking in the center that (apparently) resembles a female bee. I can’t blame it. I would totally copy this flower’s good looks if I could. #mentzelia #blazingstar #loasaceae #californianativeplants #anzaborregodesertstatepark #anzaborrego (at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnOMib-uW6O/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Bracted
Astra carefully pulled the petals off the bright white flower she was holding. He loves me; he loves me not. Well, technically they were bracts, not petals. Lara would care about the distinction. She wasn’t here, though.
He loves me; he loves me not. Astra didn’t know who he was, but he seemed particularly cruel. She’d lost three games in a row. On the other hand, it probably wasn’t his fault he didn’t love her. Astra glanced down at the flowers. Ending on “he loves me not” every time meant the petal number was even. Astra wondered if all the flowers had the same petal number. Lara would know. She wasn’t here, though.
Astra heard footsteps behind her. She knew it would be Max. He was watching over her, she knew, because he thought that’s what Lara and Jaya would want. He loves me; he loves me not. Max was sweet. It was easy to see why Jaya got so attached to him, living in the same house for years. It could be hard to tell if he really cared about someone, though, or if he just felt obliged to be kind. When it came down to it, his politics made it clear his kindness had limits, whilst he’d fight forever for the people he cared about.
He loves me; he loves me not. Lara would have a sharp, insightful comment that made the world clear and obvious. She wasn’t here, though.
