Incredibly Rare Velvet Worm Found in the Costa Rican Rainforest
Brave Wilderness is a website and YouTube Channel that has been known for it’s host, Coyote Peterson, and his love of venomous and stinging insects. Videos of him experiencing painful stings are all over the internet. But in this video, the show’s producers come across an incredibly rare red Velvet Worm in the Costa Rican jungle, and Peterson is overcome with excitement as he goes into great…

Today I watched Brave Wilderness' video Deadly Snake Bite - She Died? and I have some thoughts. You can watch the video here
To preface, I have been diagnosed with PTSD and have experience dealing with my own (non-snake related) trauma. I love snakes and am in favor of education and destigmatization of them. I'm not a doctor or psychologist or anything. I can't speak for anyone but my own experiences and am just looking to put my thoughts and concerns out there. They may or may not accurately reflect the reality of what happened, especially behind the scenes.
In this video, Liila tells us her story of her bite back in ~1970. It's a story of medical neglect, judgement, lack of control, pain, confusion, and just a severe medical emergency. Afterwards, Liila is asked by Coyote Peterson if she's now afraid of snakes. She says that she's not and that she respects snakes and recognizes that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She clearly is a sweet soul and loves animals.
Coyote Peterson then announces that he has a surprise for her! She gets to meet the venomous tiger snake! The type of snake whose venom was used to make the antivenin that saved her life! Since she's amazing and not afraid of snakes, would she like to meet it? She agrees, though clearly a bit unprepared and nervous, made evident by her body language. Awesome! She'll even get a chance to pet its tail! She's not thrilled about this idea and makes it pretty evident without exactly saying no. Coyote Peterson declares that they'll just have to see! (She's going to pet that snake's tail, don't you worry)
They meet the snake, she clearly has Emotions(tm) but puts on a brave face. They talk about snake bite emergency treatment and such. She pets the tail. Huzzah. She's so brave and and inspiration. The end.
I feel like this video could have been better. Obviously the Brave Wilderness channel is about animals and learning about and respecting them and not about trauma or stuff like that. That's not an excuse, however, to not take some of those things into consideration when interacting with guests with experiences like this, though.
I seems like there was some light manipulation going on to get her to meet with the snake. First, she's only told about the plan while they're recording. And that's only after they establish that she's not afraid of snakes like all those OTHER silly trauma victims who clearly hate animals and are irrational and silly. Surely She's strong and brave and not like that. And once she says she's not afraid, then she's told about the surprise and backtracking would be a pain. "Oh you ARE like that, huh? You ARE weak. Ha! Caught you!" And the fact that he doesn't respect her soft 'no' about touching the tail is just another small disrespect, imo. She doesn't have to touch the snake tail if she doesn't want to and she should feel free not to. It's not hurting you if she doesn't. So why not accept her boundary? Why not assure her that it's ok if she doesn't?
She has nothing to prove. She has nothing to prove! She doesn't owe you anything. She's not failing morally if she doesn't want to see the snake. You aren't a licensed psychologist she's hired to help her work through her trauma. Read the room. Address her emotions and work with her about what she really is comfortable with instead of pressuring her so that you can have a show. Don't make her your Inspiration(tm). Don't pit her against other trauma survivors. Don't pit her against herself.
I'm just calling for a bit more awareness for situations like this. Trauma is so much more than it's often thought to be. I love the Brave Wilderness channel and think they're doing a lot of good. I just think they could have done a bit better this time. We all have room for improvement and growth.
I acknowledge that my own experiences may be coloring how I'm perceiving this whole situation, and honestly I think that's a good thing. I think it's important to consider perspectives such as this to maybe make the world a bit more understanding and comfortable for people who react to trauma in the same way. It's also totally plausible that it wasn't this deep. Or that they had some really good behind the scenes discussions. It's also important to acknowledge that Liila had the chance to say no and also only she knows how it all really was for her. And she holds some responsibility of setting and maintaining her own boundaries and communicating clearly (or having an advocate available if she needed one).
