A break from atla yes! Lol
I watched a couple of netflix and prime episodes and it just grates me that maybe copyright laws won’t let them play the original anthems.
90s charmed features awesome 90s music
Tumblr media
Like this scene from Dead Man Dating guest starring Jon Cho (who never ages btw) they used a beautiful anthem with this
And when Andy died, <*SPOILER ALERT 25 YEARS AFTER for the new fandom 😝> they used this anthem 😞
Tumblr media
youtube
These anthems alone have me and my sister bawling our eyes out at every re run prior to corporations changing everything. And I’m not sorry to say that the songs they choose to use on Netflix and Prime don’t have that much impact if we’re all being honest.
And you’d think they actually already paid for the rights to use and maybe feature their songs? I guess they’re using the loopholes after a decade or so in a clause somewhere.
So it’s really important for me to have preserved the songs originally used in the series for nostalgia. They wont even let ‘How Soon Is Now’ play during the intro. You can add my playlist below if you have Spotify.

As you laid down the final piece for dinner you smiled to yourself, any minute Seungmin was going to come out of his home office and you were going to share the most exciting news you had with him. Things between you were good, things were more than good they were fantastic. You were happy maybe even more than that.
The two of you were both wanting to tell each other something and there was no way you were ever going to let him go first when you had something so exciting to tell him. Something that was going to change your lives together forever,
"Hey, sit down and grab something to eat." You said as Seungmin slowly walked into the room, carefully sitting at the table and taking notice of everything that was in front of him. Candles were burning, fresh flowers had been laid out it was obvious that whatever you wanted to share with him was good news.
"I should go first," You said only half-jokingly as you plated some vegetables up and began to sit across from him at the giant table. The two of you lived in a huge house together. It was bigger than the average family home since Seugngmin wanted to start a family with you...A big family.
The two of you had discussed it a lot before, you wanted to have your own children as well as looking into adopting further down the line in your marriage. It was something you'd both always wanted, a large and happy family in a nice big home which was why you were so happy tonight. You'd finally had your first scan and you'd discovered that you were in fact pregnant. The house was no longer going to feel too big to you and you were going to start filling it.
"Yn, I know you're excited but I think I should really go first." It was weird to hear him call you by your first name. Normally, he would only ever use the pet names he loved for you so much, it was honestly jarring to hear him call you anything but those.
"Oh...Okay, just..." You sighed a little as you tried not to come across as excited as you were. Seungmin knew you like the back of your hand and you were honestly surprised he hadn't caught on to the fact that you were pregnant long before now. It had taken you a long time before you even realised your period was late and you were experiencing symptoms.
"Go for it," You shook your head and looked down at your plate. The whole meal was baby-themed since you were trying to make him guess before you gave him the big news. There were baby carrots, baby cauliflower springs, and a bunch more things you thought would try and give him an inkling of what was going on. If he didn't guess before dessert you'd ordered a cake with the picture of the scan printed on the top, you really wanted to go all out for this first announcement.
"I need to have a serious talk with you," You nodded, reaching for your glass of water and smiling a little.
"Oh? Is something wrong at work?" Seungmin worked for a big law firm and he was constantly getting stressed with everything that was going on. He did his best not to bring home any of the stress he carried but sometimes it was a little hard for him to do especially when he would work in his office hours after finishing at the official office downtown.
"N-no, not with work." He hadn't touched his food, he was just staring down at the plate and your stomach began to twist. It was obvious that there was something wrong but he didn't know how to tell you, it was something he always did. If he was lying he wouldn't look at you, if he needed to talk about something serious he would do everything but look in your direction.
"What's wrong?" Seungmin swallowed the lump that was in his throat, it was going to be now or never. If he waited he knew there would be worse consequences, it would be just like ripping off a band-aid. Quick and easy.
"Here," A brown envelope was placed onto the table and he slid it over to you, you frowned before trying to open it. The last time he'd given you an envelope like this he'd taken you on a spontaneous holiday to Greece, you could only imagine that it would be something to do with work though. Especially with the way that he was acting so strangely about it all. But nothing would have made your stomach sink as much as it did when you saw the writing on the paper,
Petition for divorce dissolution of marriage.
Your heart hammered against your chest as you read the names on the paper. Kim Seungmin. Kim Yn. A divorce? The two of you barely got into any fights that would involve him sleeping on the sofa much less leaving one another. You couldn't even remember the last time you'd even fought with one another.
"Seungmin..." You frowned, neither of you had been having any kind of marital problems. In fact, things had been the happiest lately, just last week the two of you had gone on a spa trip together after he'd lost a bad case. You'd wanted to make sure he relaxed after the client had threatened to get his own back on him.
"I don't understand..." You trailed off as you looked from the papers and over to Seungmin who didn't even seem phased about all of this. He simply drank from the glass of water on the table and stared directly behind you. It was as if he was pretending to look at you but you knew he wasn't.
You'd been together for 6 years, for one year you'd been married and he was ready to throw in the towel? Without even giving you a reason. The one written on the paper wasn't even true "Unreasonable behaviour." Followed by a bunch of words claiming that your "Unreasonable Behaviour" was due to a "lack of socialising with each other". None of which were true. The two of you were always speaking with one another, you'd lay in bed cuddled closely while listening to how his day was and vice versa.
"You should be happy I didn't send someone to meet you at work with it," You scoffed at the thought, it sounded as though he was doing you a favour when it was far from it.
"Yes, because god forbid my husband actually decides to sit down and talk to me about what he thinks is going wrong in our relationship." You snapped bitterly at him, slamming the papers onto the table as you waited for some kind of explanation from him but he just shrugged his shoulders at you,
"It was fun while it lasted." You couldn't breathe, it suddenly felt as though you were trying to suck every breath you took through a straw while Seungmin seemed to have no issue. Just casually ripping out your heart as he sat across from you.
"Fun?"
"Yeah. I mean, you're good at taking dick but I'm bored. You're getting old and disgusting," Hurt splashed across your face and you did everything in your power not to burst into tears in front of him. That was all it was to him? Just a little bit of sex? You didn't believe him for even a second,
"That was all this was? For six years? I know I mean more to you than that! We got married!" You choked up on your words and Seungmin looked down at the plate in front of him, taking notice of all of the food and he glanced back at you.
"You're a good lay but there's plenty more out there. I didn't expect you to get so attached to me." He mumbled, further digging the knife into your chest as he began to spit harsh words in your direction.
"Good pussy always gets dried up eventually," You whimpered a little as he stared back at you.
"Don't worry, you can have the house and I'll find somewhere new. With what you're getting in the divorce you'll be well off. Never have to work again," You stared at him, it was never about money when it came to your relationship. It was the reason why you still worked instead of being a housewife for him, you wanted to earn your own money.
"It's not about money, it's about lo-"
"Don't." He cut you off harshly, staring directly into your eyes as he watched you cry.
"I've already packed up most of my stuff today, I'll see you around." He got up as if this wasn't even up for discussion. As though he was just expecting you to just accept what he was saying to you instead of fighting him against it.
Because you couldn't. Even if you got the second-best lawyer in the world there was no way you were going to beat Seungmin in this. He was the best of the best.
"We need to talk about this," You struggled to get the words out as you got up from your chair and tried to follow him out of the door. He paused, his shoulders tensing when he heard the crack in your voice and for a second you hoped he would turn around and tell you it was some kind of joke. That he wasn't serious about all of this.
"Seungmin." You begged,
"Please don't try and contest it. It's easier for both of us if you just sign it. I'm being more than generous with the house and the money." You shook your head at him, crying and begging for him to notice that you didn't want this to end this way.
"M-Minnie," You cried out as he walked away from you, getting into his car. For one fleeting moment, he spared a glance at you but he quickly looked away and drove off down the street.

                                        ~~~~3 Years Later ~~~~
Tumblr media
You'd never slept in that house after that night, it didn't feel right being there without the man of your dreams by your side. So you took your savings, you bought a crummy flat and you lived alone until your son came along.
"Binnie, wait." You called out when you noticed your son running away from you in the store. He'd never been the one to sit still or concentrate long enough on things and he was much more interested in the balloons that they were selling inside of the store.
"Binnie," You giggled rushing after him, completely abandoning your trolley and going after your son. One of these days you were going to have to invest in some of those reins you'd seen people have with their kids before. As you were about to reach your son he walked straight into someone's legs and you hissed as your son went crashing down onto his bum and began to wail out.
"Binnie, be careful." You whispered as you helped him up from the floor, brushing down his denim shorts and checking him for any bumps or cuts that might have happened. He sniffled at you before looking up at the man who he had run into and he fell completely silent.
"I'm sorry, he doesn't look where he's going. He sees what he wants and runs after it," You laughed standing back up and turning to look at the man dressed in a smart and expensive-looking suit that your son had bumped into and you instantly wished you hadn't. Standing there was Seungmin who was brushing down his outfit and hadn't noticed who you were yet. You didn't want to look away from him and yet everything inside of you was screaming at you to look away so he wouldn't see that it was you.
"My fault really, I wasn't...looking..." Seungmin trailed off as he saw you standing in front of him, both of you saying nothing as your hearts raced rapidly against your chest. It was the first time you'd ever seen one another in three years and he hadn't changed much,
"Yn?" He sounded almost hopeful as he said your name, his eyes softening and a smile beginning to play on his lips as he noticed you standing in front of him. All of a sudden it was as though a switch had flipped inside of you and you stood up straight and smiled friendly at him.
"S-Seungmin," You greeted, doing your best to appear amicable with him in the middle of the store. It was the first time you'd seen him in three years. You'd not shown up to the court dates with him, instead, you'd sent a lawyer on your behalf and signed whatever you needed to to make sure you didn't have to look at Seungmin. You didn't want him to see the fact that you were broken by everything, you didn't want him to see you pregnant either.
After the final court hearing, you'd blocked him on every form of social media and changed your number, you didn't want to ever have the chance to go back to him, you needed a clean break.
"You look good...So does your son?" He was questioning who the kid was and you nodded, glancing at Binnie who was now swaying back and forth as he picked out a balloon from the stand.
"Yeah, my son." Your voice had cracked even though you were doing everything within your power to seem unphased by Seungmin's sudden presence.
"Are you married?" You frowned at the question, turning to look him in the eyes,
"Why?"
"I just-"
"You lost the ability to ask me questions when you walked out on me." You suddenly snapped, not knowing where it came from but you weren't going to back down from it when everything you were saying was true. He'd lost everything when he divorced you.
"I was just being nice and asking questions,"
"Nice? That's funny, I thought you lost that ability three years ago," You mumbled as your son waved his balloon around hitting your legs playfully with it, gaining Seungmin's attention and you stilled for a moment.
"How old are you little guy?" You wanted to shield Binnie behind your legs, make sure he didn't speak to him but he was at that age where he would talk to whoever he wanted. Despite your conversation about stranger danger.
"3...Mummy says that I'm a big boy now because I can use the toilet all on my own," Binnie held up three fingers as you stared down at your son, smiling a little. You were proud of him but you knew Seungmin had been staring at you ever since Binnie had told him how old he was. It didn't take a mathematical genius to work out who Binnie belonged.
"I have to go." You mumbled looking at your son and picking him up carefully, heading back over to your trolley as you spoke nicely to your son.
"Say bye Binnie."
"Bye." He waved his hand, going back to playing with his balloon. You were happy he was too young and innocent to understand what was going on around him. At least he wouldn't have to get involved with Seungmin's questions too much.
"Yn...Wait," You kept your head down as you began walking toward the trolley. You knew if Seungmin found out that he was his and you hadn't told him you were pregnant at the time of your divorce there would be consequences. Seungmin could take your son away from you and you were never going to let that happen.
"We need to talk." He told you as he reached your trolley. You needed to talk three years ago when he served you with a divorce but just as he did then you weren't going to let him.
"We have nothing to talk about." You told Seungmin as you placed the items you needed into your trolley and continued walking around the store. Seungmin followed you and for a momentary moment, it felt like the old times. When you would go food shopping together, walking side by side as you used to whenever you would take him food shopping after a long day. He'd be dressed in his suit, mumbling about work and you would distract him by suggesting different dinner options.
"He's my son," Seungmin grumbled at you as you continue to walk together, your head staring straight ahead as you tried to come across unbothered by this whole thing. You could have gone the rest of your life without telling Seungmin about the pregnancy and now it was all fucking up.
"I didn't know I was pregnant when you decided to divorce me or during the divorce," You were lying through your teeth and he knew that but he said nothing. He wasn't going to take your son away from you, not when there was so much more to the divorce that you needed to know.
"I don't care about that," He mumbled as he watched you, his heart breaking as he realised that you hadn't been back to that house in years.
"I care that I have a son and you didn't bother to tell me, even after we got the divorce and you found out." You looked down at the floor, you knew it was a shitty thing to do but you didn't want him to stay out of obligation to you and your kid.
"I have a son and I find out while I'm out buying eggs!" He whispered-yelled at you making you stop in place and turn to look at him. Suddenly feeling angrier and angrier,
"You would have found out that night if you hadn't served me with divorce papers!" You yelled out before gasping a little, Seungmin stared at you and down at your son. That would be the only fuel he would need to start a custody battle, the tears began to build in your eyes as you shook your head.
"S-Seungmin, please...You can't take him away from me," You whispered breathlessly whimpering a little as he stared back at you in silence.
"Nice to see you both together again," A worker said with a smile as you stared up at Seungmin who was still silent about it all. He said nothing as he reached into the fridges and pulled out your favourite milk products and placed them into the trolley as if it was the most casual thing he could do.
"You didn't stay in the house..." He moved on from your pleading and you bit down on your tongue not knowing if you were supposed to talk to him about this now. Would it only fuel his custody case if he got answers?
"I didn't want to be somewhere with bad memories," You admitted slowly as you both began to go down the next aisle together, Seungmin's eyes were on you the entire time as he felt his heart being crushed under your words.
"Bad memories? Yn, we were together in that house for almost six years." You shrugged your shoulders, it didn't seem to matter to him then so why should it have mattered to you? There was no way you could have ever stayed in a place where he'd divorced you and left with no looking back.
"We were married for one when you decided to leave me."
"I had my reasons...If you let me explain." You stopped still and twisted around to look at him, there were tears in his eyes but you didn't let this stop you.
"It's three years too late to explain all of this." You snapped and he stood still, he knew you were going to be angry but all of this could have ended years ago if you'd just stayed in the house like you were supposed to. If you'd stayed in the home you would have had all of the answers you needed.
"If you'd stayed in the house...If you hadn't blocked me and changed your number none of this would have happened!" The yelling was beginning to gain attention from some of the workers but neither of you seemed to notice.
"What are you talking about?" You frowned, folding your arms over your chest as Seungmin shook his head. There was no way to explain it, you had to go and see it for yourself.
"Go back to the house...P-Please...Go to my office, just-" He sighed, you didn't owe him anything and after three years he didn't even know if it would change a single thing between you both.
"Just go...Please?" You didn't have to do a single thing for him and yet hearing him beg the way that it was only made your heart sink.
"Fine. On one condition." You told him as he nodded, he knew you weren't going to let him get away with anything for free.
"Go."
"You don't try and take him away from me. You can see him...Whenever you want but you can't take him away from me," Seungmin stared at you and nodded, he didn't even have to think for a single moment. There was no way he was going to take your son away from you.
"I won't. Please go to the house" You sighed but agreed to do it, taking your trolley to the till to go and pay for everything. Seungmin was nowhere to be seen after that and you didn't know if you felt good or bad about that.
Tumblr media
When you entered the house you could hardly believe that it was still spotless and warm. You figured the maids that Seungmin had hired to keep the place in check had been doing their jobs even though no one was living there.
"What-" You stared at the small table at the entrance to the home, there were letters personally addressed to you "Mrs Kim Yn," all in Seungmin's handwriting and dated on the tops of the letters. Most of them were from the first few months of the divorce and one at the end of the same year. You pulled up the letters and then remembered what Seungmin had said to you,
Just go to my office.
So you did just that, walking toward his old office, it was still in amazing condition even after all of these years. Floods of memories came rushing back to you as you walked into the room. All of the times you'd bring him breakfast in here, all of the times you'd made love or gotten into fights inside of the room. You walked further inside when you spotted something on the desk.
A white envelope with your name written across it, followed by the word "What you need to know..."
Tumblr media
Yn,
Since I cannot imagine there is much I can say to make you forgive me or even begin to understand why I have done this I need to start somewhere.
Someone is watching me, threatening me and they've threatened you too. The only way I will get them away from me and protect you is if I divorce you, it'll only be until I can find them.
I hope that you find this letter and realise that none of this is real. That I don't truly want a divorce but I need it to appear real. Whatever I say to you inside of that dining room is far from the truth I am deeply in love with you and I always will be, I know you will be angry but I'm ready to welcome your anger, please. When you read this letter I hope you're not too upset.
I will send word to you soon, please respond with a letter too.
Forever yours,
Seungmin
Tumblr media
You could have sworn your heart clenched inside of your chest and you stared down at the paper that was beginning to get ruined with your years. You were happy you'd left Binnie with a babysitter right now.
"I don't truly want a divorce but I need t to appear real." Was any of it real?! You shakingly put down the letter after rereading it over and over again, looking for a sign that this was real, that this was what had truly happened. Then you remembered the other letters. Your hand carefully opened the next envelope and you began to take in all of his words, flicking through every letter in the order that they were dated.
Yn,
We can talk here, it's a free space. I miss you and I hope you're not too angry at me but I know why you would be. I am sorry. I love you.
Forever yours,
Seungmin
Tumblr media
Yn...
I know that you're mad but please...Please reply to me. I messed up but please, I need you to write to me and tell me that you're okay! That you understand why I did what I did. Maybe you didn't understand my first letter. We're not getting a divorce, none of what I said was real.
Write to me.
Come back to me. Yell at me, scream at me, fight with me. Just come to me.
Forever yours,
Seungmin
Tumblr media
Yn.
This is childish, You're not even responding to my letters and I hate this. It isn't funny...Are you playing a game? Playing a role in case you're being watched? I assure you no one is following you.
Please let me know if you're getting the letters.
Forever yours,
Seungmin
Tumblr media
Yn.
It's over. You can stop playing the role of the divorced woman and come back to me. It is the only reason I can imagine for your overcautiousness. I'm letting you know it's done. The role you're playing can end.
We caught him and you're free to come back to me...I'll come to the house soon.
PS. So we're clear...The divorce was never real. You're still mine.
And I'm...
Forever yours,
Seungmin.
Tumblr media
You were already shaking and crying by the time you finished the final letter. None of it was real, you weren't divorced? You'd been married for four years and he hadn't tried to find you in all of that time? Your head was spinning, you didn't know what to do with yourself. All you knew was that you wanted Seungmin with you.
"Call me...Please, Seungmin I had no idea...I just found the letters," You spoke into his voicemail as you left his office, hoping for him to call you when you stopped in your tracks.
"I had to make sure you came..." He trailed off slowly, it had been the first time since he'd stepped into the house in over three years and nothing had changed.
"I know you're angry but I had to lie...I-I had to protect you. Then when you never replied to me I figured you would never come back," His voice broke as tears began to roll down his face, you stared at him in silence giving no indication of what you were feeling right now.
"I messed up, but I meant every word. I am forever yours..." He trailed off before looking down at the floor, you had no reason to forgive him for anything but he wanted you to at least know the truth.
"If you want a real divorce after this-" He stopped in his sentence when you suddenly threw yourself at him. Locking your lips with his own, his arms snaked around you slick and hot and he pulled you closer to him. You didn't try to resist and neither did Seungmin, all of the love you felt for one another was still there. The sounding of fireworks, the racing hearts and the electricity you felt whenever he would touch you.
"I love you," You whispered as you pushed your forehead against Seungmins, it may be scary after three years but everything you loved about Seungmin was the same.
"I love you too," He whispered softly bringing you closer to him.
Tumblr media
"Binnie! Put your sister down, you can't carry her like that you might drop her!" Seungmin cried out as his 10-year-old son carried his 5-year-old sister on his back and ran around the garden. It was going to be a long day of looking after the four of your kids and their friends at a birthday party.
"He'll be okay," You breathed out as you put your hands on Seungmin's shoulder, rubbing softly as he shook his head. Smiling when he turned to look at you,
"You should be sitting," He scolded before moving you over toward a chair, you were wobbling with how big you were with the twins inside of you.
"I'm fine," You laughed swatting his hands away from you when you carefully sat down on the chair. It was enjoyable to see Seungmin taking care of the party all on his own and you smiled up at him thanking him for everything he was doing.
"You can thank me by resting," He warned you, leaning down and kissing you softly before going after Binnie who was now throwing his sister onto the bouncy castle.
You grunt as you drop the last set of boxes in front of your apartment door. After finally getting your needs for moving in, you take a break to catch your unsteady breathing. You took a long set of stairs because the elevator was not working. Scrambling through your jeans pockets, you find the key given to you.
You put the object in the keyhole, hearing a 'click', twisting the doorknob as you push the door open. You sigh as your eyes roam around the place, and it sure did look spacious and very empty. Too bad you didn't have a roommate to help you with moving in, so you had to do everything by yourself. Your eyes land on the clear large windows just near the balcony, you enter the room as you walk on the wooden floor, passing the marble kitchen counter.
You slide open the balcony door, the wind hitting your face. Birds fly in the clear blue sky, cars honking in the little busy street as you smile in peace. At least you got a nice view. And at least you were starting new.
-Flashback-
1 year ago…
“Fuck, that party was legit shit,” Your boyfriend laughs softly as his hand intertwines with yours and the other on the steering wheel of his car.
“Hoseok was going crazy on the dance floor." You giggle, gosh you shouldn't have not drank too much.
"Yeah, the man's got his moves- Jin was literally dying on the couch after Jungkook told him something." You wondered what Jungkook told Jin, but some things can't be revealed.
And then your mind travels to the scene where a couple of girls were staring at your boyfriend. Flirtatious glances and giggles were all sent to him, completely ignoring the fact you were standing by him, also not knowing you were his girlfriend. To make it even worse, the man flashed his dimples and bit his lower lip.
Being pissed at that moment was very right as you stomped on his feet, the wailing was loud and clear as the girls stopped talking and looked at him.
"Namjoon, are you alright?" You question him in 'fake' worry. Namjoon's face scrunches in pain, replying, "Ah, what the hell, you stepped on my foot Y/N!" He exclaims, grabbing his foot.
"Oh my god, I just saw what happened, let me help." A voice said aloud, one of the girls reach their hand towards your boyfriend's shoulder, but no way were you going to let her touch him. You step in front of Namjoon, blocking the girl's way. You cross your arms, taking a step forward, instantly saying, "Sorry, my boyfriend's off limits, he's alright though, you don't need to worry about him." You turn around, grabbing Namjoon by the arm as you purposely flip your hair, smirking as you enter the living room.
"Seriously, all of that for some girls?" Namjoon asks, still grabbing his foot.
"Not just some girls Namjoon, girls who clearly just want you and be yours." You hiss, giving him a look of disappointment. You huff, turning away from him. You suddenly feel a pair of arms pulling you back, holding onto your waist.
"I'm sorry, I really shouldn't have done that Y/N, it was a joke at first, but please forgive me." You hear the soft plea in his voice, instantly giving in. Of course, you were going to forgive him, you just taught him a lesson.
"It's okay Joon, I love you." You hum, pecking his soft lips. “I love you too,” Namjoon looks at your lips before returning the kiss.
"What would you do if some guys did the same thing to me?" You pull back, this time reversing the situation.
“I would have kicked their asses,” his chin rests on your shoulder. Namjoon smiles before speaking again, “More shots?” He hums as you nod in agreement.
“More shots.”
Now you knew how you were effortlessly drunk. “Gosh it’s so quiet today,” Namjoon mumbles. Your eyes trail to the empty streets you were driving by, street lights flashed their bright white lights as the wind was picking up. It sure was quiet for a typical Friday night.
Vrooom
Your ears pick up a nearby noise, clearly loud, gradually getting louder, and louder. Your pupils constrict from the bright light, as you look to see what it is.
You gasp as it’s already too late, shouting, “Joon, watch out!” Another car speeds from the right side, immediately smashing into Namjoon’s car. The impact was brutal as it sent the car hurling in the air before dropping with a sickening thud, tumbling as glass shards were pricking your skin and your forehead bleeding.
The car was upside down as the tumbling stopped, and as you try to open your eyes, they instantly fall on Namjoon’s state. You try to pull yourself closer to him but you were stuck, your hands were only able to cup his face, as you start crying.
Namjoon was bleeding severely, and his eyes were closed.
“Joon, Namjoon.” You wake him up, his eyes fluttering open.
“Y/N…?”
“Oh my god Joon, w-we need to get out of this car, we need to go to a hospital.” You ramble, your hands wiping the blood away from his forehead.
“I love you Y/N.”
“What?” You look in shock as Namjoon’s head hits the steering wheel and his hand drops dead. Your heart thumps loudly as you try waking him up again.
“Joon, Joonie please wake up.” You continue crying, you try to hear a heartbeat by using his wrist but there was no pump, no flow…
No, no, no
You let out an involuntary scream, as your tears start to mix with blood. You can’t believe it at all, you won’t believe it at all. You try to pull yourself out of your seat but something was stopping to do so. You scream again, your throat feeling hoarse already.
The energy drains out of you, sweat dripping as your eyes start to shut down, and your hand falling on Namjoon’s cold ones.
Before falling into blackness, someone yells, “Someone call an ambulance, fucking hell!”
-End of Flashback-
The tears slip from the corner of your eyes. It was a year since that happened, and you're still not over it. You moved out of his apartment because you couldn't take it anymore. Too many memories to handle. You grip onto the black railings, trying to calm down your breathing, wanting to stop thinking about that day every hour.
Thump
Thump
You raise your head hearing the sudden clangour, you lean onto the railing using your back as you push yourself to see the floor above you. Curtains were covering the glass doors, but you expected some nice decoration. But there were no small tables or pot plants at all, it all just looked gloomy. That's all you saw before residing back to your normal position, though, you couldn't see much.
Walking back inside, you hear the thumping again.
Thump
Thump
You wondered if it were some couple... nope, probably someone doing something. You crouch down as you decide to open the first box as you find your clothes, shoes and some other personal stuff in it. And piled on top of it was a photo in a glass frame. The black colour outlines the shape. You glance at the small photo, protected by a golden frame, chiselled and swirled to make it look like a royal artefact.
Slowly standing up, you took a shaky breath. Your hands barely touched the frame, grazing past the sharp corners, alluring you towards the perfect picture that would stay in your heart forever. Your hands touched the glass that was covering it and the person you loved so much.
It was a snowy day as there were dark oak trees that were naked, shrivelled and covered in frosty snow. Namjoon was grinning happily, hands around each other's backs, the soft fabric you and he wore kept both of you warm during the chilly season, and the faded snowflakes flew in the background.
You hug the photo you loved dearly and then kiss the taken photo.
Your stomach grumbles as you groan. Gosh, you forgot to go to the groceries.
Well, nothing's better than a little takeout.
Tumblr media
The evening flew by as you wipe the corner of your lips with a napkin. You were sitting cross-legged on the couch, currently watching a Netflix drama on your iPad. You were getting to the good part until a deafening racket scared you.
Your eyes follow the sound and it was still coming from the floor above you. Whoever was causing this ruckus really started to piss you off. For half the day you barely had any quiet time.
"That's it," you mumble "I'm going."
You leave your apartment room, stopping by the elevator. Your fingers were crossed, hoping they would work this time, and when you heard the ding, you were satisfied.
The doors slide open, as you step in and press the button to go up. The doors shut, feeling the elevator move, going upwards.
With another ding, you trek outside, eyes roving for the right door to knock.
Your apartment room was on the left side of the hallway, the very end, so you assume it should be the same for the person who was causing their racket.
Your sneakers scraped against the smooth tiles, shining in the light. The reflection reflects your steps as you stroll to the end of the hallway. One of the ceiling lights flickers, going on and off, repeating over and over again. It annoys you, sure it was a different colour but the repetitive movements made you feel weak.
It's always the sirens.
Your mind speaks, you put a hand on the wall, steadying yourself as you hang your head low.
It was your fault.
You shake your head, the words consuming you whole.
If you weren't so desperate to go home, you could have avoided the situation.
"No," you whisper, your hands going on your head as you keep shaking your head.
If you weren't so fucking stubborn, he still would have been here.
"NO!" You internally yell, crumbling down into a soft little ball.
They told me it wasn't my fault.
You notify your mind, attempting to convince it.
They told me it was the other driver's fault.
Not me.
Are you sure, Y/N?
Because it doesn't look that way.
The voice disappears, your tears stop trickling down your cheeks as you look up. The bright light finally ceased flashing. You sigh, trying to grasp the situation. Gosh that voice, that fucking voice never shuts up. You've taken medication, gone to therapy, done everything to stop yourself from seeing that day, to stop hearing that voice.
It just loved to pester you so much, it loved it when you lose your mind and become such a fragile mess. The voice loved to test your patience, and it loved you, even more, when you couldn't move on from the past.
You get up, wipe your eyes, and prepare to knock on the dark brown door.
Knock
Knock
Knock
No answer, of course.
You knock again, bellowing, "Hello?"
You roll your eyes dramatically, ready to leave until a crash made you jump.
Is someone hurt?
Without thinking twice, you seize the handle, thrusting the door wide open. It was completely dark, you step in, finding the main light.
You flicker it on, and your eyes widen. Glass, everywhere.
Weird, however so, there was no blood or blood-curling screams.
That wasn't even the weirdest part, all the broken glass was aligned in one straight line, all pointing to a room at the end of the corridor.
You wondered if anyone was behind that door, and they did all of this... but that wouldn't make sense if it was already dark and no way they could have done that in seconds.
You muster up all your courage, walking straight to the room. You hear a crunch or two, avoiding the glass which was structured so perfectly.
Perfectly to hurt anyone.
Just like you.
The door creaks quietly, presenting you with another dark room. Your search to find another light switch vanishes as sudden moonlight glides in. You gaze at a bookshelf, it looked centuries old. Dust covers the stack of books together until one caught your attention.
Take it
You flinch upon hearing a voice. A voice that was not yours.
You hesitate, but a glimmer grabs you back. You take the book, blowing and dusting the dust away, feeling the material. It was so hard and so rough, that it had to be a hardcover. It was chocolate brown, and the pages were thick and looked stained from the outside. However, there was no title nor a blurb.
What made it even more interesting was how you couldn't open the book at all. No matter how hard you tried, you failed immediately.
The lock.
Open the lock.
The voice whispered again, and you shivered. Your hands delicately traced a silver locket, a crescent moon shape designed on it, that looked like a miniature book. Just like the one you were holding.
As you fiddle with it, you open the lock. But there was a diminutive hole and, you press your thumb in it, not thinking distinctly.
"Agh, shit!" Something protruded a tiny hole on your thumb, the red liquid already springing. You drop the book, bringing your thumb immediately to your lips. The lights suddenly turned on and your heart skipped a beat. It was deadly quiet and for a second you thought you heard faint footsteps. You stand still, almost tripping over your own feet after something warm tickled your neck. You glance around the room, maybe the room itself was just stuffy.
Or maybe you were just imagining things.
“You shouldn’t be here.” You yelp, turning over to find someone.
“Oh sorry! I didn’t mean to frighten you,” a young feminine voice said. You gazed at her, she was conceivably in her twenties. She had fairly smooth skin, and sharp green ebony eyes, perhaps she wore lenses, and her hair was a dark chocolate brown curled just past her shoulders. Her lips were delicate and underneath her eyes were shady circles as if she hasn’t slept for days.
She wore a dark velvet green coat, golden buttons closed and shining in the light, matching the colour of her eyes. Her black pants looked silky and brand new, a golden belt, designed with miniature diamonds coiled around her waist. This person went someplace special or presumably met someone.
“My name is Jia, and um, as far as I know, you aren't allowed to be here- wait how did you get in here without a key?” You look at your surroundings, walking towards Jia until you noticed something.
“The glass... where did the glass go?” You mumble to yourself, eyes plummeting to the spotlessly clean floor.
“What?” You glance up, realising you haven't conversed with the girl at all.
“When I came in here there were shards of glass.” You pointed out.
“Well, when I came in here, there wasn't want any glass.” Jia retorts, this time seriously looking at you.
You shake your head, responding, “Right, um my name’s Y/N, I heard some noises up here so I thought I should talk to the owner but turns out they aren't here.”
Jia looked pissed and tired, tapping her foot impatiently. “So, no one told you that nobody lives here?” She says a matter of fact, scanning you up and down. You peer at yourself, knowing that your hair was messy and not brushed, making yourself look wild and your pants had sauce stained on them from today's early dinner. Now you kind of knew why she was here all looking serious with you. You looked like a nasty person who broke into someone's apartment.
You bite your lip, nodding your head. “Yeah, I’m new so I didn't know.”
Jia signals you to leave, turning off the lights. You both exit the place, the door shutting with a thud, large black numbers presenting ‘101’.
“You didn't answer my question...Y/N, I asked you how you came in here without a key?” Jia waits for your answer, gazing at you with large deep green eyes.
"When I knocked on the door, I heard a crash, thinking that someone was injured. It turned out the door was unlocked."
“I didn't mean to intrude.” You add, finally wanting to leave.
"Okay, maybe next time let a staff member know before entering someone's unoccupied room." Jia mutters quietly as she asks you another question. “Is that book yours?” You glance at the book, then at Jia, not realising that you were taking the object with you.
You didn't like Jia, this attitude of hers was annoying you. Why does she have to know if it's your book or not? Why does she care? This time you attempt a question at her.
"Do you work here?" You query with a raised eyebrow, folding your arms. Jia looked startled when she heard the unexpected question. She opened her mouth as she struggled to find the words to say.
"I got access to this building because my uncle owns it, and he granted me permission to access certain facilities." Jia mimics your step, confidently standing up in front of you. You lift your eyebrows even higher, laughing softly, taking small steps towards her.
“But do you work here?”
“No, I don’t.”
“Then why do you care?”
“Because I can.”
“Then leave me the fuck alone.” You exit, leaving Jia speechless and irritated.
But you didn't notice how she fell, how it looked like someone pushed her.
You didn’t notice the smirking figure behind you.
But he noticed you.
Tumblr media
You rub your eyes vigorously from being tired, dropping the book on your bedside table, just right in front of your and Namjoon’s photo. You turn the lights off, almost subsiding into a deep slumber, the fluffy blanket bringing you warmth. That was until you heard pages flipping. You turn the bedside table lamp on, discovering the closed book now wide open.
“What the-.” You grab the book, surprised to see black ink words in the middle of the blank page.
“You offered blood, and he has been released.” You furrow your eyebrows in confusion, repeating the words aloud.
“Whisper his name, and you will be his next feast.”
“Hide me from him, or he will kill you when he sees me.”
“Don’t be a fool, and listen, for the devil has come for you.”
“And its very existence is now in this room Y/N.”
The ink disappears, the book shutting itself. You bury it under your pillow, scared because the book has your name in it. Your eyes travel around the whole room, your own breathing heard and hot. It’s just a silly joke, you tell yourself.
It has to be fake, it’s a dream.
You shut your eyes, scrambling to cover the blanket over your head. The words repeating in your head, “And its very existence is now in this room Y/N.” WHO’s existence? Who is in your room right now? How the fuck does the book know your name?
Just sleep, Y/N, it’s probably a coincidence. Your voice tells you.
You agree to yourself, calming down and thinking about something else. You stop worrying and proceed to sleep, after all, it has to be a dream. You never found the book, you never met Jia, and you never certainly heard noises above you.
Poor you, you would want to wish this to be true.
You’ve fallen asleep in a couple of minutes, deep. The pair of black eyes watch you, his lips curling into a smirk. He feels his pointed tail moving in excitement, oh what fun he was going to have with you.
He wants to talk to you,
He wants to touch you,
He wants to love you,
Because you saved him from falling further into his nightmare. He wants your delicate lips on him, he wants you to repeat his name over and over again because he knows it’ll drive him crazy. He would do anything for you as long as you obeyed him. He just has to make sure you fall in love with him only. The demon is alive and back well, ready for you.
You were his next… victim? No, the demon shakes his head. You were his next lover.
Oh, what fun he was really going to have with you.
Miss Buckley-Wheeler
I set this mentally at like 10 years after high school. Born from the idea of Nancy cleaning guns as a way to silence her anxiety. It got longer than intended as well❤️
+
Robin sighed when she got out of the bathroom and nancy wasn't there; she wasn't in the bedroom, wasn't in the living room or in their shared office space.
Robin had felt it on the car ride home watching Nancy fidget; hands switching from one position to the next, tightening and loosening her grip on the wheel.
Robin would be lying if she said it hadn't jogged a touch of anxiety in herself. Nancy brewing with unspoken emotions while Robin tried not to breathe too loudly.
Thinking back now, Robin wasn't sure why she hadn't turned on the road. Passenger controls the radio, that was the rule in their relationships. A lot of relationships really when it came to carpooling.
So game night hadn't gone well. Okay that was putting it lightly. Game night had been a wreck, a catastrophe even. It was their first game night; Robin and Nancy, with Steve and Eddie, in something just shy of six months. Of course things were going to be a little rusty, it'd be naive to think otherwise.
Nancy and Robin had been working tirelessly, endlessly, long days and even longer nights, getting their detective agency open.
Trying to be taken seriously, seen as more than just Daphne and Velma wannabes. Psh.
And Eddie and Steve? Well they were doing god knows what. So yes, everyone was a little frayed at the edges, strung tight and gripping onto their last shred of patience or sanity or both. A breeze away from tipping.
Robin knew how much Nancy wished, and hoped for everything to just naturally fall back into place. For things to just flow like the four hadn't even missed a beat.
Foolish dreaming, but it didn't mean Nancy deserved to have that drea crushed.
Robin looked up at the ceiling, "if anyone is up there" she was going for intimidating, her face scrunched, eyebrows pulling together and lip slightly curled, but Nance would definitely describe it as adorable, "she's been through so much...you know. All of us have." Robin gave a one shoulder shrug, "but none more than Nancy Wheeler..." she cleared her throat, "Nancy Buckley-Wheeler. Give her a break!" The last words fell short of aggressive and more along the lines of an exasperated sigh or beg, as Robin raised her hands and let them smack against her legs loosely.
Robin went to the backdoor. Of course the light was on in the shed. Of course it was!
The job that kept her and Nancy afloat while they ironed out the kinks of the agency, legal paperwork, copyright and all that mumbo jumbo, but also the place Nancy went to escape. To forget. To avoid.
Nancy had gotten better with emotions; feeling them and speaking on them. But time. She still needed time. Couples counciling and self reflective mentoring could only go so far without being rushed.
Without being forced.
Years, more than half Nancy's life, had been spent repressing and undermining and giving her emotions the cold shoulder. Living, trapped, in an environment where that was the norm. Where that was deemed okay, preferred even.
Robin took a deep breath as she slid into her loafer style slippers.
Robin knocked, although more than anything she just wanted to burst in, her heart a jackhammer in her chest--
"God nance why do you always have to be such a know it all!" Steve had shouted. Everyone knew he didn't mean it, but their third game of the night, maybe strategy and brain games weren't the right choice. "You have it out for me, why don't you take Robin's plot?!" -
Robin knew she wasn't doing it on purpose,  Nancy Wheeler...Buckley-Wheeler, look she was still getting used to the hyphenated name, both of them were. For a long time marriage had been off the table.
(And she had respected Nancy's wishes on that, she didn't need a paper or government law to see how much nance loved her.)
Was not playing favorites, she was playing the game to win.-
Robin shook away the thoughts, the hurt that Nancy had ignored...swallowed and masked in the moment.
"Nance can I come in?" Robin opened the creaky door. Gosh that sounds was awful, but Nancy said she loved it, found it cathartic.
Loved that it reminded her of how old the she'd was, compared to the house that had undergone many renovations. Many, so many, renovations.
"Can you ask to enter if you've already broken the seal of the threshold?" Nancy counter asked, her lip turned crooked as she cleaned the barrel of a gun.
A bit melodramatic.
"I-" Robin's mouth moved, opened and closed, blinking a few times as she thought of something to counter with, instead settling on "I'm coming in." She closed the creaky door behind herself; pressing her back to it.
It was silent, save the soft sound of the fluffy tool entering the barrel. A jag Nancy had called it on several occasions when Robin found herself inside the shed.
Robin let another moment pass before opening her mouth. "Nance. I know today was," she tilted her head and made an awkward sound in exchange for an actual word, "but you know the guys...well they're guys and Steve is...he can get emotional always a bit too-"
Nancy held up her hand, not to be rude, but because her mind was swimming.
Usually if she talked long enough, Robin, she knew it would work. It was odd maybe. Talking was. It was their thing. Robin's talking.
Robin could fill the silence, say a few things before maybe something would click, or hit the right nerve, and then that would set Nancy off. Give her the go ahead spark.
Nancy sniffled.
Fuck, Robin thought but she didn't move because Nancy still had her hand raised, the silent begging for Robin to pause.
It had been a signal they came up with in counseling. Most would see it as rude, maybe like a power play. But it was a way to help Nancy. Something special that many wouldn't understand.
Like when people wondered why Nancy would "settle" for Robin. Or how Robin could "manage" Nancy's attitude.
When Nancy's hand finally dropped, her mind probably relaxed or aligned just enough to speak, Robin moved slow, carefully taking the gun from Nancy and placing it gently on the work bench against the wall. Though it was more of an elaborate organization system filled with tools and other knick knacks fitted for gun modifications.
"Bucks I just...I ju-" Robin could practically see the make shift seems coming undone, Nancy's breath uneven, voice slightly strangled. But the nickname still brought a small, affectionate, smile to her face.
They were both kind of Buckleys now, in a way, yet Nancy still used that nickname solely for Robin.
Nancy took a breath, letting it out slow and shaky. Robin watched leaned up against the varnished wood.
"I just thought that we'd go there and it'd be like old times. We've been through worse together, y'know?" Nancy let out a watery laugh vaguely gesturing, "everyone has been through worse then playing scrabble or yatzee...monopoly or whatever with Nancy Wheeler. It's not like I do it on purpose. I don't go out there and decide who can I make feel stupid today..." Nancy shrugged and tilted her head, "I mean let's face it some people can do that on their own-"
"Nance," Robin tried, practically seeing steam coming from the working engine of her brain.
But it had no effect as Nancy continued, "God, i use that term as a general...not in the sense of god...like a person. I...I just. I just wanted to have one night to reconnect. Steve was...is my friend...our friend. He knows I can't just turn off my brain." Nancy shrugged helpless, "I can't. It was supposed to be fun I mean Steve hasn't even seen the HQ. He didn't even ask about it tonight-"
"Nancy." Robin tried again. But a switch had clearly been hit because Nancy was taken away by her worries or fears and emotions. Taken away and they were all trying to come out at once.
"Wheeler!" Robin shouted, pushing herself off the counter before taking a step forward, and then another Crouching down in front of her girl.
"It's Buckley-Wheeler actually" Nancy mumbled with a slight eye roll. "You always tell me that".
Robin smiled crooked and nodded. "You know I would never ask you to turn that big beautiful brain off. But put it on pause-" Nancy raised an eyebrow, ever so sharp and scrutinizing.
"Just let me talk, please." Robin pressed her hand to her own chest and when Nancy nodded she couldn't help but grin.
"We've all been through hell. And you have been through so much. So, so much," Robin moved her hands to gently cup Nancy's cheeks before moving one farther to tuck hair behind her ear. "I don't think it was necessarily you tonight that got to Steve, you were just the tiny pin cushion that happened to crush his poorly built house of cards."
Nancy rolled her eyes at the metaphor, and Robin knew that meant she was right.
"Maybe we should've saved game night for another night. It's always been competitive," Nancy offered up, a bashful smile, "maybe I do just like seeing that dumb look on Steve's face when I use words he's never heard."
"Like baisemain?" Robin smirked.
"Like baisemain." Nancy confirmed, taking one of Robin's hands and kissing the top ever so softly.
"I love you Nancy Buckley-Wheeler." Robin smiled, leaning up so she could meet Nancy's lips.
A Couple of Essays I Did On Artists' Rights And AI Art
So, I'm gonna be posting a couple of essays I did on Pillowfort on AI art and the talk about datasets, the second one having been written a couple of weeks after the first.
Long story short, while I'm sympathetic to traditional artists' concerns about the dataset issue, as a copyright minimalist I'm also scared about how much they're parroting copyright-maximalist rhetoric in a way that's taking some dangerous routes to be used as tools for big Copyright to further increase its death-grip on culture, and maybe we should use this occasion re-examine the way we think about copyright and how we handle the idea of the moral rights of the artist in light of this issue.
Long story long... well, that's why I'm putting it past the break:
On AI Art Datasets, Copyright and "Theft"
...On the AI art issue, I will confess as someone who's cared about how bloated and awful copyright law is for years, it genuinely disturbs me that everyone's talking about the dataset for... well, really most AI art as an act of deliberate theft, when the reality is significantly more complicated, and the conception of it as theft feels like it's pushing people down a dangerous path they're not entirely aware of.
The thing is, the LAION dataset, which everyone refers to, is basically an attempt to crawl the entire internet for basically everything that has alt-text and sort it by how well the alt text matches up with the images. That's it. It's literally like a search engine crawler with the intention of "map the internet" rather than "find art".
And it is very; very dumb and brute force. That's how it ended up going through medical records, not any sinister intent, but because it's so stupid it looks for anything public with alt-text.
You can and probably should take issue with that, because it indicates failures to anticipate this on LAION's part and massive security failures on the part of those holding the data (And really this whole issue is more about data privacy than copyright) but it's not an issue of their intent being bad; it's an issue of the failure to account for that factor.
Another thing, it is actually very bad at categorizing artists by name. Like, through my multiple checks in the "Have I Been Trained" site; unless you're a big name professional artist, it almost definitely will not catalogue you by name.
If someone's looking to use your name in a prompt to avoid commissioning you, they are fools swindling themselves, and you should disabuse those cretins of their illusions, if only to discourage that behavior.
That's not to say I haven't run into the works of smaller artists I know (Who I've informed when I have, for the record), it's just that for better or for worse their work is genericized...
....Tho if you run into any works from artists you know in a dataset search, you should probably tell them, just so they're informed and can have it removed if they want.
And, following from that, for clarity's sake, even if you are informed, I don't think it's invalid to be scared of the potential impacts of AI art and the issue of data privacy (Which issues with the dataset are, as Tangibletechromancy talks about). In fact, I did see a post on Pillowfort expressing those sentiments that was relatively understandable.
And it's not like there's no issue with the way they draw from the commons. As I've talked about before on my Tumblr, it's abhorrent that certain models draw from the commons but then make their models closed source and put them behind a paywall. Because it's taking from the commons and giving nothing back.
Hell, the only reason I'm able to find other artists' art and inform them so they can have it taken out of the dataset is because Stablediffusion at least makes its model Open Source and its dataset publicly visible, both of which I think should be required for anything that uses that public data scraping.
And it sucks that Midjourney and OpenAI are getting a lot less scrutiny than Stablediffusion when SD is arguably the one doing it the most correctly (Though I have heard MJ plans to eventually make itself Open Source, which, we'll see), and the former two ought to be looked at with a lot more skepticism...
...But my point is, it's less of an issue of deliberate theft and more Google Maps finding that one house of Barbra Streisand's she didn't want found. It's a survey of the commons of the internet trying to get as wide a picture as possible, for a set of "rules" as to what images look like (Note the AI model stores none of the actual images) and the conception of that as "theft" is what disturbs me.
Because, the idea that that 1/600,000,000th of a random image might end up influencing another's work without authorization relies on the idea of any derivative works as theft.
With that 1/600,000,000th it takes less direct inspiration than an artist doing a pastiche or; arguably; even drawing from common experience would; even accounting for the other factors influencing it in an artist's mind because; hey; the AI has that too; as this post from friend of the blog Tangibletechromancy talks about.
It's an alien form of such compared to humans, but it is a form of that, because the dataset is big and dumb and anyone who's worked with stuff like Stablediffusion knows it reflects how dumb that sort of learning is.
And criminalizing that would definitely have knock-on effects, as this post by Trent Troop points out. Disney doesn't want to outlaw AI art; it has enough of a treasure hoard of works which it owns the copyright to to train its own. It wants an AI only it can use while drawing from copyrighted works, while copyright walls off access to it to everyone else.
And it disturbs me so, so much that a lot of people against this are fanartists not knowing the precedent this could set; or hell; even the fact that the guy who started the train rolling on this moral panic; RJ Palmer; got his start doing Pokemon fanart, because the legal precedent that criminalizes this could very easily criminalize that too.
And, on a personal level, I have heard that argument well before that people should "stop stealing and Be Original," by people who... basically want to criminalize the concept of derivative works in general. People who believe that copyright should be perpetual, despite the concept of copyright as anything other than a temporary legal protection being very; very young from a historical perspective.
Like, you would not believe the shit I have seen. I have seen my producing teacher in college, who's most prominent producing credit was one of the worst modern horror remakes, argue that copyright should be perpetual in a metaphor comparing art to a family gas station. I have seen one person argue that the concept of derivative works itself should be outlawed to prevent them from diluting the original author's intent.
That person ended up rallying most of the other folks on a Discord server against me and driving me off of there. Not that I'm bitter or anything.
And I see that pattern in AI art, the animating sentiment that "derivative works are theft," with the same old "But it's different this time" framework laid over it. And believe me, I have seen enough "It's different this time" sentiments to be deeply skeptical of "but it's different this time."
In fact, that is why I'm scared in a way that motivates me to post this, because upon seeing anti-AI-art arguments going on like in the comments of this one post by the Staff of Pillowfort, I'm like, "oh god, I've heard this before," and where I've heard it before ain't good.
I see people trying to make the treatment of AI art akin to the way the RIAA treats music, despite the fact that that would be a horrible idea as this post points out, and people talking about wanting Disney to "save them" from AI art even though; again; Disney's more likely goal would be to use their own in-house trained AI to cut jobs while preventing anyone else from using it.
And I am deeply demoralized by the fact that over the time I've cared about it, from a perspective of material change this issue of fighting back against the bloat of copyright maximalism has basically never gotten any better (beyond the "Luigi wins by doing nothing" concession of stuff finally being allowed to go into the public domain very slowly in the US), and is very likely to get even worse
I have been angry for years that there's been no real legislative efforts to; say; decrease copyright duration or expand fair use, and now I'm living to likely see fair use shrunk even more. I will curse RJ Palmer's name until the day I die for single-handedly sparking this moral panic and basically undoing decades of work by copyright minimalists to kill the copyright cop in people's heads over a matter of months.
I come to my positions on AI art from years of being angry about copyright bloat and seeing the same patterns in the idea of it as "theft" as I do on people who were defending our current copyright nightmare before this, and I wish more people would push back on that.
And if you have concerns about AI art and want to shape it right, I will point out, we have a Discord server...
Thoughts on AI Art and Moral Rights
I had some Thoughts wrt the debate on moral rights with regards to AI art datasets that I figured I might as well share with y'all, because I think the issues raised are more complicated than a lot of people say, and not in the ways y'all might think.
Like, it's a common talking point in the pro-AI-art circles that, even if the fair use defense were cracked down on, big megacorps that own huge swaths of images; such as Disney, Warner, ect, could still use the images they legally own; without the permission of their creators; to train their own AIs.
Which could, of course, lead to the same nightmare job loss scenarios that folks are talking about; again using artists' works to replace them without their permission, except the tools are behind a corporate wall and with no copyright ambiguity because; again; they own the images wholesale.
I've in fact heard it argued that; with the whole attempts by anti-AI-art people to join with Big Copyright's astroturf organization to expand copyright, that's what Disney wants, more crackdowns on copyright so they can use their own AI and you can't.
So, it's not a case of respecting artists' rights or don't. It's a case of whether everyone gets to use this tech at full power, or only Disney/Warner/et al are able to use it while the public gets a significantly weaker version trained on Wikimedia et-al.
The artists' rights; as articulated by those who are against AI art; are already fucked either way. Which, I am not saying as a gotcha.
Rather because, while I know which of those two options I'd prefer,I sympathize with the fact that it fucking suuuuuucks for those creators who care about the moral rights of artists, and I want to examine institutionally why things are like that.
To start, a question: Why; beyond the legal reasons; is it okay for monopolists like Disney to violate creators' rights to control their work in that way; but not for wider-scale open-source projects like StableDiffusion to?
Some would say that it's because the megacorps pay and ask them. But, those often also end up as theft far more egregious than image synthesis programs do.
We all know the way that Spotify's "royalties" pay only pennies to creators and most of the actual profit to Spotify and the record labels that own the music themselves. Some even predict that that's how a license for using one's images in AI would go, which I think should give you pause.
And, we all know those stories of Marvel artists and writers wasting away in poverty and disease in their old age while Disney makes billions of the MCU and doesn't give them a dime. Totally legally allowable, they did get paid a pittance, once, but the billons more they never saw a dime of makes the difference in money not given to artists between them and the AI's unauthorized use more or less academic if we're going by sheer proportion.
One could argue it was even worse in the long-run, because AI's use doesn't technically force the subject's art behind a copyright wall and prevent the original user from using it, whereas the copyright landlords do, but that's probably it's own debate I can't get into at the time.
My point is, what the megacorps do is just as much theft if not moreso than what image synthesis training does, and the thin veneer of payment only obfuscates the vast degree of theft they do, which they only get away with because of how thoroughly it has been normalized.
And that's even before we get into the fact that it's hard to say you "consented" to it when your choices were "have the thing not exist and starve on the street" or "give us total control over what you create/"
But then, the natural answer of course you'll probably say after that to my first question (Why is it okay if Disney trains on my work without consent but it isn't for SD) is, of course, that it isn't.
But then, if you think of it purely in terms of copyright law (ignoring the fair use arguments for datasets), there should be no problem with what Disney does. They were "given" the copyrights fair and square, in the same way you would "give" a mafioso protection, but it was still fully sanctioned by the copyright system.
And yet, in a moral sense, there is. And, I think an important idea to articulate why this is a problem is the idea of moral rights.
The concept of "moral rights" in art is one that I don't see talked about much directly. Long story short, it is the idea that the artist has the rights to not have their work mangled and to be credited. Notably, it is considered a separate right from copyrights, non fungible in the way those are.
Note also that, it does not legally exist as a concept in the US, at least not to the significant degrees it does in other nations. But, I've noticed that the way a lot of people talk about copyright basically conflates the two.
Which makes me wonder how much this debate comes from a US-based perspective, but I digress.
Like, a lot of the dialogue I've heard on why copyright is sacred; and especially from those who think it should be perpetual, isn't just about economic fears, but about the fear of your work being messed with and warped by those who don't understand it.
They see copyright as the end-all be-all when it comes to protections for moral rights, because of how interchangable the two concepts have been made in the public dialogue. Copyrights require authorization from the holder to work with, they place the mark of their creator upon them, therefore they are thought of as valid insurance of those.
But, the point I'm leading to is this viewpoint doesn't really work. Because copyright on its own is a godawful protector of moral rights.
Like, the problem with copyright as a protector of moral rights is, it depends on a landlord model of security, IE the idea that individual ownership of "property" (even intellectual property( rather than collective protections will keep you safe.
The trouble is, as Cory Doctorow has pointed out with regards to regular landlords, not only does that sort of commodification create a grotesque incentive to make things harder for those who don't have it (Such as, say, small creators with new ideas crowded out by legacy IP), but in the end power always gets consolidated under that system under the big guys.
Lucas sold his creation to Disney, Eastman and Laird sold theirs to Viacom. The fungibility of copyright; the ability of it to be bought and sold on the market, makes it a terrible means of protecting moral rights if you have to sell it to make a living, because once it belongs to a megacorp, they can do whatever they want with it, and that consolidation makes it harder for artists like you to show up.
In the case of collaborative works done under big megacorps, it's even worse because you have to give away those rights from day one to allow it to even exist. Look at what happened to creators under the whole HBO Max purge, copyright did nothing to prevent their work from being erased.Copyright did not do a thing to protect their moral rights.
Even in the case of estates, Doctor Seuss would be rolling in his goddamn grave at the Ilumination Lorax, and I'm pretty sure you can faintly hear Tolkien clawing his way out of the earth at Rings of Power being made by Jeff "Sauruman" Bezos.Copyright did not protect their works from desecration.
But the way we conflate moral rights with copyright in the conversation is very useful for those IP hoarders who want to expand their grip over the collective creative commons. It creates a broad base of public support amongst working creators for these copyright power grabs even if, as Doctorow mentions, it only benefits the top players due to their ability to buy everyone out and use their monopoly power to squeeze smaller creators further.
In fact, to bring it full circle, that's why I talked so much about why we need to push back against the idea of "theft" in datasets. Because the rhetoric of "theft," only makes coherent sense through a copyright lends, because how different piracy or derivative works actually are from; say; physical theft.
There's a reason why "You wouldn't download a car" is a widely mocked concept. And I think that the accusations of theft are doing that exact same work of conflating moral rights for the artists to control their work to copyright, and as I have stated before, that is a very dangerous game.
This is why, I think, those of us concerned about moral rights need to start imagining means of protecting moral rights beyond and in place of copyright, because the conflation of them with copyright not only is ineffective, but also leads to those massive power grabs that undermine moral rights via monopolies.
And, when you think of moral rights beyond the lens of copyright, it opens up far; far more avenues of thought to you.
Like, for example on AI art, the idea I've heard to focus on image scraping as a data privacy issue and not as a copyright one, because as a friend said the copyright angle is the least concerning use of scraped data for machine learning TBH.
Or, to encourage practices such as Are We Art Yet's rules of ethics, which I think is deeply useful as a framework for engagement, and any AI art community should adopt them or something similar...
...Tho, thinking about it, a lot of the fears with regards to AI art and moral rights relate to Pillowfort user osteophage talking about how Tumblr; and to an even greater extent other social media sites like Twitter I'd assert; undermines community and the process of building communal norms, and how a lot of the fear is regarding to the breaking of communal norms in ways that'd devastate the commission/small artist economy.
Though that's its own ramble, which a friend of mine has sorta-addressed, but which I do want to give my own two cents on in the future.
Point is, I think the issues raised with regards to rights via AI datasets raise much deeper; more long-term questions regarding the nature of moral rights and the way they've been co-opted by copyright monopolists, and I urge you to direct your thoughts to those questions and what answers you might have for them.
If only because it will allow you to act much more wisely upon this topic rather than being lead around by the nose by copyright monopolists on it...
How Audible steals from creators (an Audible exclusive)
Tumblr media
If you listen to audiobooks, chances are you get them on Audible, Amazon’s monopoly platform with a 90+% market-share in many genres. But my books aren’t for sale there, even though that means foregoing the majority of the market. I explain why in a chapter of “Chokepoint Capitalism,” my forthcoming book, co-authored with Rebecca Giblin.
Audible is a classic “chokepoint capitalism” story — that is, it’s a story about a company that has corralled an audience inside some kind of walled garden, and used its control over the audience to demand greater and greater concessions from the creators who want to reach them, eventually abandoning all pretense of fairness and literally stealing from creators.
In Audible’s case, the walls are made from DRM, or “Digital Rights Management” — this is the “copy protection” system that Audible requires of all creators and publishers who sell on its platform. The company claims that DRM prevents listeners from stealing from creators by making it impossible to share the books they buy.
In reality, though, removing Audible’s DRM is not hard; if you’re a dishonest person who wants to share an Audible title widely, you can figure out how with a couple of quick searches. But while removing DRM is easy, it’s also very, very illegal: under Section 1201 of the DMCA (a 1998 US copyright law), selling someone a DRM-bypass tool is a felony carrying a 5-year sentence and a $500k fine.
That means that DRM never prevents copyright infringement (because infringers don’t care if they break the law), but it always prevents competition. If you’re a rival of Audible, hoping to unseat it, you have to convince potential customers to give up their Audible titles or maintain two separate libraries. You can’t just give them a tool to convert Audible files to MP3s or even another DRM format.
Audible doesn’t give creators a choice about DRM. Whether you’re Penguin Random House Audio (the audio division of the largest publisher in the world) or an independent producer, Audible requires you to use its DRM. This is so transparently abusive that I actually coined “Doctorow’s First Law” to describe it: “Any time someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you, and won’t give you the key, that lock is not for your benefit.”
Every time a publisher or creator allowed Audible to sell their work on its platform, they put another brick in the wall that surrounds audiobook listeners, making it more expensive and cumbersome for those listeners to defect from Audible to a rival platform.
The higher the walls got, the harder it was for listeners to leave.
The harder it was for listeners to leave, the worse Audible could treat creators.
This reached its apotheosis with the slow-moving crisis dubbed Audiblegate, in which the independent creators using Audible’s self-serve ACX discovered that the company had stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from them, an act of wage-theft to rival any media baron’s most brazen crimes:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/11/03/somebody-will/#acx
Audiblegate was discovered by Susan May, who publishes on ACX, and worked with Colleen Cross, a forensic accountant who also publishes on ACX. Now, a growing cohort of Audible authors are banding together, trying to recover their stolen wages from a trillion-dollar behemoth that was careful to subject them to binding arbitration waivers that take away their right to file a class-action lawsuit. We interviewed Cross for Chokepoint Capitalism, as the centerpiece of Chapter 13, “Transparency Rights,” which explains how if state legislatures in just three states (NY, CA and WA) passed laws requiring certain accounting disclosures, we could shift millions of dollars from monopolists’ balance-sheets to creators all over the world.
“Transparency Rights” appears in the second half of our book, which is entirely given over to shovel-ready, realistic ideas for providing immediate, material returns to creators of all kinds — proposals for local, state and national governments, but also creators, artists’ groups, tinkerers and entrepreneurs, and fans.
This solutions-based approach was really the reason we wrote this book. For 40 years, the only lever creators thought they could yank on to improve their situations was labeled “MOAR COPYRIGHT” and despite the ballooning of copyright term and scope, creators’ share of artistic revenues has contracted, even as entertainment industry profits soared.
That’s why we called it “Chokepoint Capitalism.” The tech and entertainment monopolies have created hourglass-shaped markets with creators on one side and audiences on the other, and they sit at the pinch between them, demanding all that creators have to give as a condition of entry.
Giving creators more copyright under these circumstances is like giving your bullied kid more lunch-money. No matter how much lunch-money your kid brings to school, the bullies at the gate will take it from them. Indeed, the bullies will lobby for you to give your kid more lunch money — the more you give your kid, the more they can take from the hungry little beggar:
https://doctorow.medium.com/what-is-chokepoint-capitalism-b885c4cb2719
“Chokepoint Capitalism” is built on the idea that we make creators richer by restructuring the arts market by neutralizing monopolies — not by giving creators more easily expropriated rights for monopolists to take off them and use to increase their power.
After all, giving creators more copyright — the power to prevent DRM-removing tools, even when used for legitimate purposes — didn’t make us richer. Instead, it made it possible for Audible to lock up our audiences and then steal hundreds of millions of dollars from us.
Cory Doctorow and Rebecca Giblin’s new book, Chokepoint Capitalism’, tells us how the vampires crashed the party and provides protective garlic. Your brain must remain your own concern, however.’ — Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale]
The book is getting amazing advance notices. Margaret Atwood loved it and Publishers Weekly named it one of the most anticipated books of the fall. You’ll be able to buy it anywhere as of September 27.
https://twitter.com/rgibli/status/1563648065197981697
Well…almost anywhere. We won’t be selling the audiobook on Audible, for reasons that I hope are obvious by this point. Instead, we’re running a Kickstarter campaign for an independent audio edition, and we’ve raised nearly $100k that way! Better still, our backers have added on 377 hardcover library donations and our publisher has pledged 200 more donations!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/chokepoint-capitalism-an-audiobook-amazon-wont-sell/description
Now, I say that the book won’t be available on Audible, but that’s not quite true. As from today, you can buy an “Audible Exclusive” edition of Chapter 13, “Transparency Rights,” which explains in eye-watering detail how Audible locks in its listeners and uses that control to steal from the creators they love:
https://www.audible.com/pd/Transparency-Rights-Chapter-13-of-Chokepoint-Capitalism-Audiobook/B0BCR3J8WJ
This is the only part of the book that’s available on Audible. Instead of audiobook listeners who hear about our book and search for it on Audible getting no results, they’ll get this “exclusive” book, which is 35 minutes of Stefan Rudnicki’s outstanding narration of our detailed indictment of Audible’s business practices.
The price of this “Audible Exclusive” is different for every listener, because Audible won’t let its creators set their own price. It shows up as $3.95 for me. But rather than buying this short excerpt, I hope you’ll back the Kickstarter and help us blow the doors open on Amazon’s rampant wage-theft and abusive monopolism.
We’re about to head out on the road with the book, with several tour stops that are still being finalized. The first one we’re ready to unveil is coming up in NYC on Sept 23, sponsored by NYU’s Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chokepoint-capitalism-funtime-book-party-tickets-411552222777
We hope you’ll come, and bring the creators in your life. We’re giving space to several grassroots groups that are organizing resistance by creative laborers and other workers, and we want this to be as much about sharing tactics as it is about presenting the book.
hi there, sorry if this is a silly question, but is having text printed by services like staples allowed? because wouldn’t that mean the company is technically profiting off copyrighted work? thank you
Hello!
Totally not a silly question, and definitely one I asked when I first started!
You are correct in that it is not permitted, because the company is profiting off of the work. While you are less likely to be caught printing at Staples versus, say, Lulu or Barnes & Noble Press (print-on-demand sites that have put out statements specifically calling out people trying to print fan fiction).
Unfortunately, whether you’re publishing your own fanfiction to sell on our bookstore or ordering a printed copy of your favorite fic for your bookshelf, using Lulu to print fanfiction is illegal.  Printing Fanfiction For Private Use This is arguably the most often misunderstood part of copyright infringement, at least for how it relates to fanfiction and self-publishing. There has been a recent uptick in fanfiction readers ordering individual print copies of their favorite works to add to their book collections. What it all boils down to is profit. If anyone other than the copyright owner makes a profit off copyrighted work, without the permission of the copyright owner, it is copyright infringement. And even if you are printing the work for private use, not selling it, we are still making money off it. Lulu makes a small profit off every book we print, which means even a book printed for your own personal use is not completely profit-less. What Is Fanfiction And Why Does It Matter?, 2/4/2021, Lulu
The same applies to Staples - Staples makes money off the prints you purchase at their store. I've never used Staples printing, but a quick look at their website tells me that their Simple Print option - pure B&W printing - is $0.19 a page. On average, an inkjet printer using moderately priced paper can yield about $0.10 a page. That's a $0.09 profit on your page which might not seem like much, until you do some quick math:
800 page book = 800/4 = 200 sheets of paper = 200 x 0.09 = $18 profit.
Now think about how many books you'd like to make. I myself have already made 60 books - not all of them 800 pages, but still. I plan to make many more! And then, if you want color printing - they're making more off of you, and moreover, the business never asked for that liability, re, breaking copyright laws.
THE GOOD NEWS: printing at home is fine! Printing at work, or school, if you have free printing, also fine.
But, I hear you saying, what if I don't have access to a printer at any of those places? You're in luck. There is ONE place I know of on this capitalistic hellscape of an Earth that offers at-cost printing.
YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!
Most libraries offer printing ranging anywhere from $0.06 to $0.10 a page, or at-cost printing. I just checked my local library, and they actually offer 10 pages free! So if you were really dedicated, or doing a tiny book, you could go and print a couple signatures a day, absolutely free.
Hope that helps, & my ask box is always open for questions (or my DMs!) Happy Binding!
Whale Couple Filipino Memes
Fun and witty Filipino memes about the Whale Couple from Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Tumblr media
The Filipino people are known for finding laughter out of painful stories and experiences. Filipinos do not tone down or dismiss a painful or sad story but it is in their culture to uplift each other and to smile despite what one is going through. What happens when this culture encounters a painful and sad Korean drama story?
The Philippines is one of the first overseas country where Korean dramas became popular. Not counting the 1990s Korean dramas, Il Mare (시월애) (2000), My Sassy Girl (엽기적인 그녀) (2001), Winter Sonata (겨울연가) (2002), Jewel in the Palace (대장금) (2003), Stairway to Heaven (천국의 계단) (2003), were very popular in the archipelago nation of more than 100 million citizens. Korean dramas were so popular that some titles were locally adapted and it dethroned Latin American dramas off the airwaves.
It is no surprise that the Filipino culture is reflected in Korean drama memes. One such example is the break up of Woo Young Woo (우영우) and Lee Joon Ho (이준호) in Extraordinary Attorney Woo (이상한 변호사 우영우) (2022). The break up in the series was felt by many fans of the Whale Couple, many fans were able to relate to it when they too once experienced it.
This led to various cool memes about the Whale Couple. Check out a select few below!
Image Regulations.
Australian Copyright Laws
The regulation of copyright in Australia is governed by the Copyright Act of 1968. This Act offers legal protection for original works, including literary, artistic, musical, and dramatic works, as well as films, sound recordings, and broadcasts. Typically, copyright protection lasts for the lifetime of the creator plus an additional 70 years.
The rights of copyright owners include exclusive control over the reproduction, publication, performance, communication, and adaptation of their works, except for some exceptions such as fair dealing and educational use. The Australian Copyright Council is an organization that offers guidance and resources to both creators and users of copyrighted material, helping them navigate the intricacies of copyright law. With the protection offered by copyright law and the assistance of resources like the Australian Copyright Council, creators can feel secure in their rights to their original works.
Explain what Copyright means.
Copyright is a legal concept that grants creators of original works the exclusive right to control how their work is used and distributed. This includes works such as literature, music, films, photographs, and software. Copyright provides a way for creators to protect their intellectual property and to earn money from their creations by controlling who can use them and how they can be used. Copyright can also provide incentives for creativity and innovation by giving creators the ability to profit from their work. In most countries, including the United States, copyright protection is automatic upon creation of an original work, although registration with a government agency may be required to enforce certain rights. Copyright protection typically lasts for a certain number of years after the creator's death, although the exact duration varies by jurisdiction.
Why do we have Copyright laws?
We have Copyright laws;
To encourage creativity and innovation: Copyright laws provide an incentive for creators to produce original works by giving them exclusive rights over their creations for a limited period of time. This allows creators to earn a living from their work and encourages them to continue creating new works.
To protect intellectual property: Copyright laws protect the economic rights of creators and prevent others from using their work without permission or compensation. This helps to prevent unauthorised copying, distribution, and exploitation of creative works.
To promote cultural diversity: Copyright laws help to promote cultural diversity by protecting the works of creators from different backgrounds and allowing them to share their perspectives with a wider audience.
To foster knowledge sharing: Copyright laws include certain exceptions and limitations that allow for the use of copyrighted works in certain circumstances, such as for educational purposes or criticism and review. This promotes the sharing of knowledge and ideas while still protecting the rights of creators.
How long does Copyright last?
In Australia, copyright protection typically lasts for the life of the creator plus 70 years after their death for literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works. Copyright protection for sound recordings and films generally lasts for 70 years from the year of first publication or release. Copyright protection varies from country to country.
What happens if you break Copyright Laws?
Rogers vs. Koons
Art Rogers a photographer captured a image of a couple holding eight puppies in a line between them. He ended up selling this photo to be used in greeting cards. An intern
ationally famous artist by the name of Jeff Koons saw Rogers photograph one day and decided to create a set of statues based on the image.
Koons ended up selling these statues for a large profit, when Rogers discovered this he sued Koons for copyright, Koons responded, claiming fair use by parody.
Tumblr media
The Associated Press vs. Fairey
Shephard Fairey a famous street artist created that Hope poster during President Obama’s 2008 presidential run. The poster quickly became a symbol of Obama’s campaign.
In January 2009 Associated Press revealed that photograph Fairey allegedly his poster on was shot by Mannie Garcia. Associated Press demanded compensation and Fairey responded by stating fair use claiming that his poster didn’t reduce or undercut the value of Garcia’s photograph.
Fairey and Associated Press came to a settlement privately in January 2011. The profits from the work were then split between the two.
What percentage if any, of a Copyrighted image are you legally allowed to use in your Artwork?
There is no specific percentage of a copyrighted image that you are legally allowed to use in your artwork without permission from the copyright owner.
In general, any use of a copyrighted image in your artwork without permission could be considered infringement, regardless of the amount or percentage of the original work that you use. However, there are certain situations where the use of copyrighted material may be considered "fair use," which is a legal exception to copyright infringement.
The determination of whether a particular use of copyrighted material constitutes fair use depends on several factors, including the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and the effect of the use on the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
In general, if your use of a copyrighted image in your artwork is transformative, meaning that it creates something new and different from the original work, and if your use is not likely to compete with the market for the original work, then it may be more likely to be considered fair use. However, it's always a good idea to consult with a legal professional if you have questions about the use of copyrighted material in your artwork.
What are Moral Rights?
Moral rights are a type of legal right that are designed to protect the non-economic interests of creators in their works. Unlike economic rights, which focus on the financial benefits of ownership, moral rights are concerned with the integrity of the work and the reputation of the creator.
Moral rights are designed to protect the personal and cultural value of creative works, and to ensure that creators are given proper recognition and respect for their contributions to the world of art and culture.
How can you assert your Copyright and Moral Rights when publishing your original Artwork?
To assert Copyright and Moral Rights over your own artwork you should;
Register your copyright: This can help you establish a record of your ownership of the work and may be helpful in the event of any disputes or infringements.
Include a copyright notice: When you publish your artwork, include a copyright notice that identifies you as the owner of the work and specifies the year of first publication. This can help to put others on notice that you assert ownership over the work and may deter potential infringers.
Consider licensing: If you want to allow others to use your work in certain ways, you can consider licensing your work under a Creative Commons license or another type of licensing agreement. This can help you retain control over your work while allowing others to use it in specific ways.
Assert your moral rights: When publishing your artwork, include a statement asserting your moral rights, such as "All moral rights reserved" or "The moral rights of the author have been asserted". TICKET TO PARADISE (2022)
Starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Kaitlyn Dever, Billie Lourd, Maxime Bouttier, Lucas Bravo, Sean Lynch, Arielle Carver-O'Neill, Ling Cooper Tang, Charles Allen, Francis McMahon, Geneviève Lemon, Romy Poulier, Dorian Djoudi, Ilma Nurfauziah, Agung Pindha, Ifa Barry, Cintya Dharmayanti, Nom Gunadi, Inaya Servais and Ida Pandita Putu Wirata.
Screenplay by  Daniel Pipski.
Directed by Ol Parker.
Distributed by Universal Pictures. 104 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Ticket to Paradise is a fun, sometimes silly rom com filled with some of the most gorgeous views of Bali that you could imagine. The entire film could undoubtedly be turned into an advertisement for the Bali Tourist Bureau to sell a million trips.
The film is directed by British writer and filmmaker Ol Parker, known for his past romantic comedies in exotic locales like Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and both The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies.
There is an exceptional cast. You really can’t go wrong with stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney because, while they already have built-in chemistry, they are both über talented and charismatic. Also let’s face it, like the scenery, they are also extremely attractive to look at as they continue to age so gracefully.
The story starts when Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) graduates from college. She leaves on a fun vacation to Bali with her crazy, often drunk roommate Wren, (Billie Lourd) before she is due to settle into her cushy law job back in the States. While partying through the vacation, Lily meets and falls in love with handsome seaweed farmer Gede (Maxime Bouttier). Somehow this extended vacation becomes the lead up to their traditional Balian wedding. Lily finds she is willing to give up all of her aspirations for a new one; to live in Bali with the man of her dreams.
When her divorced and always bickering parents – Georgia (Roberts) and David (Clooney) – find out about Lily’s upcoming nuptials, they decide to put their differences aside and work towards a common goal. That goal is breaking up the engagement and bringing their daughter home to live out her dream – or theirs – of being a successful lawyer. When they teamed up, I started enjoying the film more because the constant fighting early on between the two of them was somewhat over the top, in my opinion.
After joining forces, the two parents cause some bumps in the road for the couple but also learn a whole lot about themselves. Georgia’s current boyfriend/pilot Paul (Lucas Bravo) follows her around like a puppy dog and beyond giving David more fodder to throw his ex’s way, doesn’t seem to have much purpose.
The best scene of the film for me is when out at a bar as a group, David and Georgia relive one of their favorite memories from college – playing beer pong. After challenging the soon-to-be bride and groom to a game, with House of Pain’s 1992 hit song “Jump Around” blasting in the background, you are reminded why you love Julia Roberts and George Clooney so much as they dance around, goofing off and just having fun. No dialogue, just fun.
Although you won’t see any of this talented cast up on the Oscar stage for this specific film, it’s okay. It was still a fun, light film that’s easy to watch on a cold night and to fantasize about being in Bali… with Clooney, Roberts and some friends.
