Went into this patch without any clear direction - most importantly, I knew I wanted to pan around some drums a bit, since I picked up Jumble Henge which I've wanted to get a bit more space on the kit forever.
Marbles acts as the master clock, with T2 clocking Zularic Repetitor and Data Bender. ZR on pattern 01000 controls Daiko for metallic percussion through IDUM, and ABD Kicks without trigger modulation. Taiko is triggered directly from T3, acting mostly as a snare.
T1 clocks Bloom (acting as a clock multiplier and sequencer) and triggers Sinc Bucina, which is where we get to the lead? Distorted bass? I really have no clue what to call it - it's a sound I cam across just patching and re-patching. Telharmonic receives Tonic CV from Bloom and Degree CV from X1. Phase output plays through Sinc Bucina, getting heavily filtered, then Strega. Strega applied heavy distorting saturation, very light reverb, and hi-pass filtering. The voice finally goes into Data Bender with additional saturation, in micro mode, with low repeats. All of these processing stages together create that noisy sound, as well as the novel rhythm. There's just something about it.
Some additional pings come from Ts-L, bitcrushed by o_C and through Ikarie and panned around with an LFO.
Ultimately a very cool patch, and one that's pretty much impossible to recreate. Very happy to have Marbles back in the rack right now, it is an inspiration machine.

I had my first shipment of modules in about 2 months - Maths, Erbe-Verb, and Milky Way 1u now reside in the rack. There will be more in-depth details on those as they're relevant. This current patch came about just trying things with new modules and fleshing out existing ideas I'd been exploring.
Rhythm-wise, the kick is finally on a jitter from Marbles to breathe more life into the patch. The Y LFO controls Cold Mac, acting as a macro controller for a number of drum parameters as well as rhythm selection on Zularic Repetitor. This means that over time, just about all of the percussion will change to familiar but novel arrangements. I want to explore this more, with different random sources and some longer loops to let it meander, but give it more structure.
The bowed voice takes Banshee Reach through Sinc Bucina gated as an AD envelope, then Ikarie as a "twin-peak" formant filter, then Erbe-Verb and finally Data Bender. This was just the second patch with it, but I'm already so fascinated by the workflow and sound design opportunities. I'll be keeping this voice patched up to try out an expressive sequencing method I've had brewing for a while - this should be coming in the next day or two!
As expected, options for patching increase exponentially as you add more modules. So many patches to try out, so little time. I've really valued having the opportunity to leave things patched up across multiple sessions with this new case - but it does admittedly slow down the discovery that comes with a new patch. I'll keep going, and strike a balance eventually.
When I first started making these Isolation Tapes, we were in the midst of worldwide Covid lockdowns and it was a way for me to share the music I was hearing on the radio with others.
Of course, now were all allowed back out the house again, the name isn't really as apt as it once was...
Although its still made of songs that I hear on BBC6Music, whilst in my car or my home office, which I mix on my own, and then listen back to again in my car. So to be fair, the term Isolation Tape has probably never been more true!
Usual fun and games for Vol 6: some techno, some drum & bass, some soundscape stuff, a bit of weirdness, some jazz, a bit of old and new funk, soul & R&B, and a smidgen of hip-hop, all mixed up and smashed together in a completely un-cohesive way...
I mean, you know what this is by now. You know what you're getting!
