the way tom is both shiv to logan and logan to shiv right now... call your wife tom call your fucking wife and tell them to get their own fucking idea. you wanna be my dad's little bitch boy why don't you deliver him a message bitch boy tell him to fuck off and stay out of my life.
shiv married a man who she thought of as the opposite of her father because she wanted to be better than her parents and she ended up getting 'mommed.' she wanted to become the inverse of her father and she turned her husband into her father instead. and because her husband is her father she can't manage to sever herself from either of them, because they won't let her and because she doesn't know what she'd do or who she'd be without them. she still pulls up tom's contact and thinks about calling him. she's the one who talks about getting a divorce but she's also the one still consistently wearing her ring out and about.
logan's always been attached to shiv in a particular way as his only daughter, his favorite, his baby girl. he loves her the most and that means he thinks the least of her. he lashes out at shiv in particular for the pierce deal because of all people his daughter can't be undercutting him. how can she dare when her own husband, the one who was too weak to betray her up until he did, chose logan over his own wife? but while logan respects tom for that, at the same time, tom is nothing to him apart from the lingering connection to/stand-in for shiv - and tom's ability to be that connection/stand-in is jeopardized by the fact that he's thrown his lot in with logan over shiv.
it's fucking unbelievable tom's still trying to play both sides under these condition, and he also has no option but to try to play both sides under these conditions. if either of those supports goes down so does the whole house of cards. shiv got him in at atn and hated him for being in at atn and when/if the deal goes through logan will only be atn. yeah man you were right when you were like 'our family' but i don't think you knew exactly what you were signing up for

@Wellnoe and I made a little one-page Orth/Ibex zine for the Sam’s Club Zine Exchange, themed around reunions. Of course we HAD to write about our favorite difficult old men in a situation. Art and lettering by them, script and dialogue by me.
If you are interested in printing out and folding your own physical copy, you can download one here.
Image description below the cut!
Traditionally drawn black and white comic in simple grid layout. Orth Godlove and Ibex are older, wearing suits as described in the dance during the Counter/weight finale.
Page 1/Front Cover
Top half of the background is flowers. Bottom half is leaves.
Title: A postscript after Orth and Ibex’s dance.
Caption:
Script & Words: Wil Xia (boo-cool-robot)
Art & Letters: Wellnoe
Page 2
Orth sitting on a marble bench in a lush, artificial garden. His tie is loosened and he looks tired.
He looks up at the night sky.
Ibex approaches, silhouetted in the foreground.
IBEX: May I join you?
Caption: You scavenged data. You fed blueprints to me and I, well, I executed them.
Page 3
Ibex lets himself down onto the bench. Orth cocks his head at Ibex.
ORTH: Bringing me another offer?
IBEX: I brought you chips.
Close up on Ibex’s hands holding a cup of potato chips.
Caption: I comb through the data myself now. What’s coming. What used to be.
Page 4
Orth makes a grossed-out face that’s surprisingly unguarded and expressive.
ORTH: These the ones on the little platters inside? Awful things.
Orth is already reaching for a chip.
Caption: The moment his hand lifted free from my back, I’d realized. In another world, Attar Rose could have loved him.
Page 5
Orth is turned toward Ibex on the bench, looking down a little at him, amused. Their hands are close, hovering over the chip cup, postures mirrored.
IBEX: I could make better chips than these.
ORTH: I remember.
Caption: You had told me what to say, how to take his hand in order to turn him to me.
Page 6
Orth and Ibex with their backs to the camera, looking at a fountain in the distance. Ibex hesitates, looking at Orth. Orth has turned away already, the moment gone without him even having been aware there was a moment.
Caption: I thought I had mastered you. But in your absence, I realize that I instinctively feel for your guidance on the lead before I bite.
Page 7
Orth leaving the garden, stepping out of the pool of light. He looks back at Ibex, who looks weary.
ORTH: Are you ready?
Caption: I was like a very good dog.
Page 8/Back Cover
Chip cup, crumpled in the dirt below a blooming rose.

“My mother loves me in the only way the fey know how to,” Brenna laughs bitterly as she eyes Astarion.
“Is that not beneficial, to have the love of an Archfey?”
“I do not believe you understand,” Brenna says through lidded eyes as she watches the flames dance. “Fey are not mortal, nothing near that. They love in a manner that mortals cannot understand, nor appreciate.”
“Are you not part fey, too? Do you not love like them?” Wyll asks, curiosity clear on his question. Brenna raises her eyes from the flames and stares at him tiredly.
“I might be half fey, but I am mortal enough,” she says with a near shrug. “I am fey enough to understand her love, but mortal enough for it to feel like a choking fungi growing on the back of my throat, ready to smother me for my own good.”
She takes a breath, before returning her gaze to the flames.
“I am part fey, yes, but I am mortal enough not to want her love,” she admits, voice low. “Not when she loves me like a possession she must subjugate.”

She's not sure how it's come down to this - the two of them standing in the long abandoned drugstore, guns aimed at each other, both seconds away from being the one to pull the trigger. But the sound just outside the door has her hesitating. Infected, more than she'd like to deal with on her own from the sound of it. And she knows he can hear it too. She can see his eyes darting between her and the door. If she wasn't worried he'd pull the trigger on instinct, she might consider making her move while he's trying to assess the growing problem out front. But she wants to live to see tomorrow. And something tells her he feels the same.
Her voice is low, a mumble just loud enough for him to hear but not enough to attract much attention from what's on the other side of the old glass. "Look, either you kill me now and deal with those fuckers outside by your lonesome. Or we deal with it together and live to kill each other a day. So what's it gonna be?"
Her eyes track his every micro expression. The way his jaw clenches, practically able to hear him grinding his teeth. His finger's still on the trigger but there seems to be a hesitancy towards her that wasn't there a minute ago. Nostrils flare as he breathes out a long, frustrated breath before the quick jerk of a nod. "Fine. But just remember if you change your mind and shoot me, better make sure it's a good one. If it's not, I'll find you and kill you with my bare hands."
"Back at ya, big guy," is all she says in response, swinging her aim towards the door that's started to rattle when he does and braces herself for what's to come.

Anyway remember when I said I'd post more in depth Silicon Valley-Succession meta? Well, the time is now.
And honestly, I have to thank @tomwambsmilk for this because she understands Silicon Valley far better than me and we have had multiple conversations about this. I will probably end up making a prettier gif parallels post about this stuff, but this is the base stroke I wanna establish.
But essentially while I have been watching Silicon Valley, it's fascinating to me how some of the specifics are very similar to Succession. Like Brenna mentioned to me, some parallels and arc of certain characters closely resemble that of Succession.
Specifically, I was thinking of Dinesh x Gilfoyle (Dinfoyle) in regards to Tomgreg, and for me, it's about how DG close mirrors TG. Aside from one obvious difference where Tom has an obvious power dynamic over Greg and as a result, Dinesh has the position to retaliate more because Gilfoyle is his equal. There, however I would argue, is a subtle power dynamic that gets established between Dinesh and Gilfoyle in the early days where Gilfoyle is able to far easily able to outmatch Dinesh.
Also similarly, there is almost an instant pairing of both of these couples as soon as the show begins which lasts till the end of the show (for Succession, I obviously talk about the S3 ending) and funnily, none of these couples realise that they are part of a pair until it gets pointed to them by a third party.
("I think you're each other's best friend" vs "... a tom sundae with a greg cherry on top")
It essentially comes down to the fact that TG is borne from almost the same stuff that makes DG, but is worse somehow. They go through the same rounds to trust, betrayal and understanding and it's interesting to go through the curves.
(There's also the individual coding of characters in the ship as a duality of Tomgreg and it's funny to get into but I won't yet)
Another notable similarity is Richard and Kendall. (and Logan). For me, Richard is the more competent version of Kendall (as Brenna put it) where he has a specific vision for the company that gets closed to being bulldozed as he keeps changing over the seasons. In certain points, he turns into Gavin Belson despite vowing to start a company completely different from Hooli. That's extremely similar to the Loganifiction of Kendall. There's a ton of more meta that could be thought off when I'm not incredibly sleep deprived.
So that's it folks, two of my HBO shows are showing themes, symbolisms and motifs and they are interesting as heck.
(also if this does not make sense, I am sorry - I wrote this while being incredibly tired)

I once read a piece from a TV critic that talked about how many professional critics will form their initial opinions of a show from its second episode. That's because second episodes are really, really hard to pull off. If your show got picked up, that means you've set up a really interesting premise in your pilot (or at the very least one that a studio deemed marketable), and you've started to build your characters. In your second episode, you have to figure out what beats from the pilot are going to become recurring plot and character beats; you have to hold the interest from the pilot (especially since no one's had the time to get invested in your show yet - if the energy drops in your second episode that can kill your whole show, regardless of how good the rest of your season is); and you have to do all this before getting real audience feedback (beyond maybe a test audience) on what they do or don't like about the show.
With all that in mind, "Shit Show at the Fuck Factory" is a phenomenal success. While it's definitely not one of my favourite episodes (overall, I think I'd still rank it as a bottom ten), I think it's definitely the strongest episode in the first half of season 1. (And this is especially impressive given that filming for 1.02 picked up six months after filming wrapped on 1.01). And it does such a good job of setting up the show and the season. We get to explore more of some of the relationships that 1.01 only briefly set up (Shiv and Roman in a pretty major way, as well as everyone's relationship with Connor and Shiv's relationship with Tom, among others), we get the key "suits" introduced (Gerri and Karl), and most importantly - we get to see everyone's interpersonal relationships in the absence of Logan. Obviously, he still looms over them, like he looms over everything, but removing that direct influence shows another side of these people and their really important dynamics.
It also crucially establishes that all of the Roy kids love their father, no matter how tumultuous their personal relationships with him might be. And I think this is a really important fact to establish early on because if we don't think they love their father (something which would be easy to believe without this episode, I think), it's very easy to fall into the incredibly misguided position of reducing the interpersonal relationships on the show to being about "strategy" or "tactics" or "optics." "These people do love each other" is a foundational idea on the show; if you don't get that, you don't get the show.
There are also just so many great individual character beats that I'm not even going to try and list them all. Succ does such a good job of rounding out the characters even early on, and making them feel realistic - we're still learning who they are, but in hindsight, you can already see some of the assumptions the audience has probably made by the end of 1.01 unravelling, and there are beats and dynamics here that carry all the way through season 3. While it's not my favourite episode it does such a good job at what it needs to (and it sort of makes me sad that so many people struggle to get through it on first viewing, as understandable as it is).

We don’t value writing in the university.
I want this to not be true — I have the English doctorate and the nine years of full-time college academic writing instruction to prove it — but it is. Consider who does the labour of most writing instruction in our institutions, especially at the foundational level: graduate students and precarious sessional instructors. This labour is underpaid and the work often done without benefits, a commitment from the institution, funding for professional development, and so on. Within courses that are not academic writing courses, writing instruction is typically limited and surface, with the pressures of course content far outweighing the need to learn to write in the discipline. Coverage is king, after all. Again, this demonstrates a lack of value for writing instruction: if we valued it, we would make time for it.
But we all want students to write. We want them to write well.
It’s never been a tenable relationship and it has resulted in the kinds of writing instruction that John Warner articulates so clearly in Why They Can’t Write: without time, resources, and a sense of institutional priority, student writing instruction and assignments are perfunctory at best and empty simulations of argument at worst. They’re shallow. They’re boring. And they don’t teach students how writers approach the task of writing.
And then there’s ChatGPT.
Once again, I find myself amused and dismayed at the energy being poured into the anxious intersection of ChatGPT and writing assessment. The essays ChatGPT writes are objectively bad. They are vapid. Bullshit. Or, as I said on my podcast a few weeks back, bafflegab. But that kind of surface writing that obsesses over forum instead of content — oh my god, you guys, ChatGPT can make citations now!! — is exactly what we have been training our students to do since the advent of the five-paragraph essay. We trained our learners to write like robots, following patterns and scripts and worrying less about content than the fact that it looks vaguely like an essay. And shockingly, robots are also good at writing like robots. So is the problem really ChatGPT?

Sursh I have to defend the original Star Wars trilogy which is in fact good and fun!! Kind of stupid but that’s part of why it’s so much fun. It has Chewbacca and Leia in the gold bikini (and also she gets to choke out the slug mf who put her in the bikini ❤️), the Darth Vader character arc is actually pretty interesting, Luke is kind of milquetoast imo but I think the Han-Leia and Han-Luke dynamics are a lot of fun. (Crotchety old man gets stuck with two people with magic space powers he doesn’t want to believe in that drive him bonkers). Also that post about how Han and Luke and Leia each believe they’re the voice of reason when in fact none of them are is very very true. Leia is pretty badass (thank you Carrie Fisher bc the original writing for her was apparently Not Great and Carrie fixed her ❤️). The Ewoks are kinda cute. Threepio and R2 are iconic ❤️ Idk this isn’t my best pitch but it is a lot of fun and I do still love those movies despite everything else thats happened with the fan base franchise!!! They should have just stopped after Return of the Jedi and they wouldnt have these problems 😭
(Also a lot of the Expanded Universe novels are actually pretty good, which is why I’m so mad they didn’t just use either the Zahn trilogy or the Bloodlines series as the basis for the new movies….. they were right there!!! They were so good!!! So in my mind those are canon and not the new trilogy)
for you brenna i will watch the original trilogy. at this point not watching them has basically just been me committing to the bit. i swore when i was 5 or something that i would never sit through it because my brother was really into it. same with the bourne trilogy. but i dont think he’s been into star wars for 15 years.... so can i really claim it’s the principle of it?..probably not
even though i have no star wars knowledge, though, i have always loved han and leia. how? idk. i think i wandered in while my family was watching it. and i used to love indiana jones. and carrie fisher is carrie fisher. who knows why. but invoking them has convinced me. i do need to see the story behind what i’ve shipped all my life
the only scene i remember seeing of star wars is when vader cuts off luke’s hand (if that doesn’t happen, ignore me, maybe it was a simpson’s episode)
also.. the star wars fanbase does seem v intense ... i will say that
