I love it when you can see an author in their works. Specifically, I’m talking about when people write an ultimate evil into their stories and you can clearly see what they hate and fear the most.

Tolkien’s villains are an industrial sort of evil. They are represented by factories, pollution, and huge faceless armies. Middle Earth faces a single ultimate evil, but it feels more like a machine. Tolkien supposedly hated allegory, but you can see World War 1 and the industrialization of the early 1900s in his work. I love it.

Jack Kirby, a comic book author who defined the medium and invented so many of the heroes that dominate pop culture, fought in World War 2. He once said “The only real politics I knew was that if a guy liked Hitler, I’d beat the stuffing out of him and that would be it.” He was one half of the duo behind Captain America. Later on, Kirby made a comic book mythology called Fourth World. It’s a battle between the ultimate good and the ultimate evil and it definitely feels like a 1970s superhero comic, but the biggest bad guy is clearly a space nazi. The villain’s name is Darkseid in case you want to read more on your own. I recommend it if you are already used to old superhero comics.

Nate Stevenson’s works often have huge institutions as their ultimate evil. Nimona and Ballister Blackheart battle an ancient Institute that rules through conformity and fear. The final villain of She-Ra, Horde Prime, was modeled after cult leaders. The crew behind the show looked at megachurches while designing his ship, and Horde Prime constantly monologues about purity and light. Stevenson was raised evangelical Christian, and you can see the echoes in his work. Relatedly, it’s a common joke that Brennan Lee Mulligan always makes the players in his campaigns fight capitalism, the church, or both.

To clarify, not every villain says something about the author, and villains can be very good without being personal. I am a random person with a tumblr account. I just think that these four people and their art are neat.

As a final note, can anyone who remembers Harry Potter well (and still wants to engage with it despite everything) tell me if the ultimate evil in that story feels like this? I remember Voldemort being pretty generic, but it’s been several years.
