Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega
Alexander Volkanovski (25-2) went up to 155lbs to challenge for the title and came up just short. It was an amazing fight between two of the very best fighters in MMA right now and honestly it did nothing but boost my opinion on Volk.
Now Volkanovski is back at 145lbs and is set to defend his title against a fresh challenger - Yair Rodriguez (15-3). The two are scheduled to square off in the main event of UFC 290 this Saturday (July 8).

For the love of boxing, somebody help T-city.
Coz them hands can't do a Rodriguez vs Ortegua 2.
youtube
It's bad enough that his punches are "procrastinating".
Yair will not let him breathe.
Pummeling will be in order.
Unless Yair tries some really classic schmegular BJJ, I don't see Ortega winning.
Hell, Yair might just put that shoulder back in its socket so He can have a proper win.
He's that hungry, and will be in Mexico.
Abeg, one shoulder at a time.

Makhachev or Volk on Feb11?
I'm so bad at predictions that I feel like I curse every fighter I pick so I don't wanna say anythin 😭😭😭
To be entirely honest though, I don't think Alexander has faced anyone like Islam, I don't think he's ready for the weight Islam can put on top. Alexander also goes into this fight with only 3 pro-fight submissions; Islam has 11. On the other hand, Volk does have 12 (T)KO wins, and 9 UDs, I can't deny his stand-up power at all.
Goin off his last six fights, these are my thoughts on how Volk may hold up against Islam, and why I think Islam will snub him out:
Volk did alright against Jose Aldo in their 2019 fight, he put the pressure, he controlled the clinch, and he was attackin the hell out of Jose's lead leg. But he never got a takedown. No matter how hard he tried with trips, he couldn't get Jose down to the matt. Islam certainly won't let Volk trip him if Arman Tsarukyan, a Sambo league s-70 two-time champion, couldn't trip him. And Islam knows to check kicks from the get-go, we've seen it. (Plus, Aldo was on a bit of a decline since his own fights w/ Holloway so I don't know how good Alexander really did against Jose.)
All three of the Holloway vs. Volk fights seem a little useless in relation to this fight in my opinion, Max is a huge boxer, he's not a ground guy the way Islam is, their only similarity is height and we know height doesn't mean shit to our little-bitty-munchkin Aussie. If anythin it just shows how easily a taller fighter can pop right back up after Volk takes them down bc Max was right back to his feet 2/3 takedowns. Islam fought Arman Tsarukyan back in 2019, Arman got the first official takedown of Islam, if Volk (by the grace of whatever higher power you like) gets a takedown, I can assure you Islam will pop right back to his feet.
The Ortega fight was great, Alexander showed his submission defense and reversal ability very well even though his ground and pound looks a little sloppy to me. Not to mention how often Ortega landed massive head strikes and Volk seemed to just shake them off after bein a little dazed. We know Islam has KO power, he doesn't use it often and sometimes he looks a little unsure on his feet, but he has the power and I wouldn't be surprised if he used it next month. Also, (sorry buddy) Ortega just does not have the ability to put down the amount of weight in his hips that Islam can when he's on top and in the clinch. Volk reversin a BJJ-guy isn't applicable to tryin to reverse a Sambo-guy.
And then of course his fight with Chan Sung Jung. I didn't really know how to react to that one, Zombie looked so off his game that Volk did just dominate by default. I don't want to take anythin away from Alexander, he's a spectacular fighter and for sure the best Featherweight in the UFC currently, but that one just wasn't great. I really have no comparison between this fight and the upcomin fight, sorry.
THAT BEIN SAID- I hope this doesn't jinx Islam, the fight is a day before my birthday and I rlly want P4P Champ Islam as a gift 😭😭

'My arm just popped out': Brian Ortega injures shoulder, loses via TKO to Yair Rodriguez at UFC Long Island
‘My arm just popped out’: Brian Ortega injures shoulder, loses via TKO to Yair Rodriguez at UFC Long Island
Yair Rodriguez was landing hard, clean punches. He had just hit a front kick. Brian Ortega had just knocked Rodriguez to the ground, exactly where he wanted it to be. It looked like it was going to be the big fight everyone wanted to see. But then, it became a huge disappointment. Kerley wins the American men’s world 100m final Ortega’s shoulder was injured while he was trying to position…

Yair Rodriguez beats Brian Ortega by shoulder injury
Welp, there you go.
We saw glimpses of old Ortega in this one. He came out aggressive, pressuring Yair backwards. Much more boxing centered attack from Rodriguez too, though he was still throwing those kicks. Especially to the legs. Ortega came out looking to wrestle, which we haven’t seen much of honestly from him. Got Yair on the fence with a deep underhook and was really trying to get him down. Managed to get him down but almost instantly his shoulder popped out. Looks like Yair was trying to go for an armbar to defend but it just kind of popped out when Ortega pulled it out. Sucks, this was looking to be a fun, interesting styles clash.
I guess Yair gets Volk? or they do Yair-Emmett? Honestly, don’t know what they’re doing next.
