Starkid moments where you can never quite recapture the sheer visceral feeling of seeing them happen for the first time:
• Quirrell walking onstage for the first time in AVPM
• Paul starting to sing ‘Inevitable ’at the end of TGWDLM
Feel free to add on

I recently got back into watching Atlanta and forgot what an amazing show it is. I had to do a poster illustration for it. It’s like The Wire mixed with Seinfeld and a bit of Twin Peaks but written by Donald Glover. Really worth a watch if you haven’t seen it, I love the bits of surrealism in it. Can’t wait to start season 3!

If you follow this blog, you know I absolutely love everything Earth Two written by Roy Thomas at DC in the 1980s, from All-Star Squadron to Infinity Inc to Young All-Stars and beyond. So when this issue of Alter Ego magazine arrived in the mail yesterday, I was pumped and read it from cover-to-cover in one afternoon. Such fantastic stories about an amazing series that didn't survive very long. I particularly have always been taken with Thomas's theory about the Crisis erasing the big Golden Age heroes but not their energies. I thought replacing the DC trinity with brand new heroes and adding in a few other young guns was an ingenious solution. That's something I miss in today's comics; a commitment to continuity and the clever retcon to solve a continuity problem.

Rewatching 'Private Practice': "Contamination"
This episode of #PrivatePractice is the measles outbreak episode and this one's a doozy. #rewatch #review #recap #blog
As a new segment on WhatSamWatches, I will now be doing more informal reviews/commentaries on what I’m watching. And it’ll include shows I’ll be rewatching just because I feel like it. I did a review on Private Practice not that long ago but I’m binging the show from the beginning all over again, anyway. So since I rewatched the tenth episode of season two last time, we’re now onto the 11th…

Ginathon Episodes: Episode 232
At the end of the last episode there was an explosion at the Lord Banbury pub where the summer party is being held. Most of the Sun Hill staff are able to make their way outside on their own feet, some with light injuries and most just shocked or coughing from the smoke. Gina looks for Adam but noone has seen him come out yet. There's secondary bangs inside the building from the structure being unstable and Gina quickly calls for a fire officer to come assess the situation. Tony can't wait and runs back in to find Adam and get him out before the building collapses. There's a further collapse that blocks the exit but Tony manages to kick the fire escape doors open and carries an unconcious Adam out over his shoulder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unknown to everyone except Gina, Adam has been receiving racist hate mail for quite some time through the internal mail. Back at the station and unaware of what has happened, Rob slips an envelope into Adam's pigeon hole whilst wearing a glove.
The pub is sealed off and SO13 are called to attend. Sam suggests a gas leak but Gina says none of the witnesses or officers mention smelling gas. She did spot Wayne Radford driving away when she arrived however. Instantly Rob is riled. "It could be a bomb!" Jack tells him not to get ahead of himself and to go make himself useful.
The latest news is that Adam is critical and Gina heads to her car to go and be with him at the hospital. Jonathan arrives, having rushed to the scene. Gina is still obviously in shock and worried about Adam but assures Jonathan she's OK and that it would take more than an explosion to get rid of her. Jonathan hugs her and says their last few conversations had been snapping and things could have ended so differently. He offers to go with her but she assures him she'll be ok and doesn't know how long she'll be so she'll call him when leaving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at the station, Jack has found the note in Adam's internal mail and has started to think that he could have been targeted by a racist. Rob says he was sent one too and that it has to be Wayne Radford, panicking when Jack won't be swayed.
Gina is still sat at Adam's bedside when Neil comes to see how he is doing. It still doesn't look good as he's inhaled so much smoke. [Out of interest, they're saying it doesn't look good. but noone appears to have contacted his wife. It's Gina who's at his bedside for hours. This is all of a day after she called him out for being jealous she was seeing Jonathan too...] The next 24 hours are critical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning Adam starts to come round with Gina at his bedside. Jonathan is worried as he hasn't heard from Gina. It's early days but the signs are good. Jack tells uniform that the explosion was caused by a bomb and that Adam received a racist hate note.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rob and Terry look into The Radford's involvement in the potential planting of the bomb. Rob watches the CCTV from a furniture shop across the road. Wayne arrives 2 minutes before and carries a parcel from the boot in the direction of the pub. Wayne gets back into his car seconds after the explosion and drives off. When spoken to, Wayne tells them that he was dropping off a birthday cake at Mario's, the bistro around the corner from the pub for a surprise party. Before they can leave the Radfords, it appears as though the 'bomber' may have struck again. Jerome Taylor, a local black councillor, reports he has been beaten up, told to leave Sun Hill and that he's been receiving hate mail. Rob doesn't look all that convinced, not least because it's been him and Taylor sending Adam the hate mail. He's horrified to hear about the bombing and Adam being hurt however - aware that if the notes are discovered to have come from him and Rob it makes them the most likely suspects.
Adam recounts what he remembers to Gina though it isn't especially helpful. He tells her that Denise has already asked him to leave Sun Hill over the hate mail. Gina admits he gave even her quite a scare and made her wonder if it was worth it. Adam tells her that she'll never walk away from the job as she has 'copper' coursing through her veins. She just smiles and says she's going to make times for other things - relationships for one.
Adam: "You mean Jonathan. For you to even be considering resigning there must be love in the air." Gina: "Oh give over!" Adam: "It's nothing to be ashamed of. You should tell him how you feel." Gina: "It's not me is it... all that lovey dovey stuff." Adam: "So you do love him then." Gina: "Something like that." Adam: "You can go out into the streets, take on dangerous criminals but when it comes to the man you love, you can't say three little words"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jonathan and Gina finally catch up where she apologises for not ringing. Gina spots Lance before she can take Jonathan to her office to tell him something special and asks him to wait a moment. Tony has told Gina that Lance is struggling after he was unable to go help Tony get Adam out the pub and she goes to speak to him to make sure he's alright. Now Lance has gotten his phone and jacket back from Gina he's rather concerned by some messages that he has received. One in particular asks him to meet him by the gents toilets in the pub - where the bomb was - sent moments before it exploded.
Gina finally gets chance to speak to Jonathan. She wants to tell him that she's fallen in love with him and wants to prioritise their relationship, but unfortunately Jonathan is fed up of playing second best to the job. He speaks over her and tells her he thinks it's best to split up. "It's not that I don't love you, Gina. I'm sure I always will but I can't be in a relationship where I'm playing second fiddle." "But that's what I was going to say to you!" "Being a copper is what you are. It wouldn't be fair for me to try and change it, you'd only resent me for it anyway. It's time to call it a day." The barriers come slamming down again and Gina turns her back on him. "You know it's for you too... it's best all round." Instead of replying and telling him the truth - that she wanted to make more time for them and loves him - she shuts down and literally turns her back on him rather than let him see the truth, tears pricking her eyes.

She also turns down an invite from the relief to go out for a drink, still sounding rather choked ad she does.

The thing is, Steve has learned, that becoming untouchable isn't all he wants it to be.
People were too quick to try and reach out for him, ask for more than he was willing to give. He hadn't wanted to give up his first kiss to some random girl at some random boy's twelfth birthday party because of spin the bottle. He hadn't wanted to play Seven Minutes in Heaven with Jenny Jackson or Linda Simons at Tommy's birthday party the following year. He did want to take Mary Linscott to Snow Ball, but she just wanted to make out behind the bleachers instead of dance with him. He didn't want to do that but then Brian called him stupid for not wanting to, and asked if he was queer. So, Steve had turned right back around and dragged Mary back under the bleachers, kissing her until it was time to go to prove Brian wrong.
(Even though Steve knows Brian isn't wrong. That Steve had wanted to ask Brian to the dance as much as he'd wanted to ask Mary but knew better than to do that. He saw how they treated Eddie Munson last year for the suspicion of liking other boys and Steve wasn't going to let that happen to himself.)
Brian had congratulated him after and asked what base he got to. Steve didn't want to get to any bases, but he couldn't say that, so he just punched Brian in the arm and said 'more bases than you' which was true because Brian's date didn't kiss him even once.
Then Carol Perkins approached him at lunch, shortly after Snow Ball, and asked if Steve would be her first kiss. Not because she wanted to kiss Steve, but because she wanted to kiss Tommy H, but didn't want to be bad at kissing. Steve agreed because he liked Carol. Not in the way she liked Tommy, but mostly because she'd asked.
No one had done that yet.
She came over to his house on a Saturday because she didn't want Tommy to catch them and think she didn't like him. They made out in his room because, despite his parents being home, they didn't really care who was in his room with him or if the door was open or shut. Probably didn't even notice he had someone over. She leaves an hour later.
By Tuesday Tommy and Carol are an item and by Friday they were Steve's best friends.
However, for reasons Steve doesn't understand, more girls keep asking him to be their first kiss. And maybe it's because he's already got a reputation, or maybe Carol let slip he'd said yes when she asked, but Steve finds himself kissing a lot of girls he doesn't want to. He doesn't know how to say no. Can't find a reason too. Brian's words play in the back of his mind every time he thinks about saying no.
(Are you stupid? Are you queer? He doesn't want to be either of those things, and given his grade in biology and pre-algebra, he's really only got a hope of avoiding the queer label. His father would tolerate a stupid son. He doesn't think he'd survive if his father had a queer one.)
There are a few girls he's been crushing on that ask him and that was nice. One, Alice Baker, even becomes his girlfriend for a month. His first relationship.
Soon eighth grade gives way to being a freshman and Steve, who has always been handsome and cute, catches the eye of upperclassmen now.
And Steve's not sure how it happens, but he ends up moving past first base with another girl whose name he can't remember, or possibly never knew. He doesn't remember asking her for hers when she led him into one of the bedrooms at the house this party was at while he was way too tipsy.
And then it just grows. The reputation and what people expect from him, and he doesn't want it, but he's never said no before so can he start now? Doesn't he need a reason to say no? If he doesn't have a reason, does that make him queer? He should be wanting this. What boy doesn't want this?
And maybe he does want it. But not like this.
He doesn't want to be slightly drunk at yet another party, following the first girl that grabs his wrist and pulls him after her into whatever secluded area they can find. He doesn't want to keep saying yes when he wants to say no.
The summer between freshman and sophomore year he confides in Carol. It's a risk. Carol can be cruel, quick with her words to tear you down, to spread the rumor that will ruin your life. But she's also fiercely loyal.
He tells her he's tired of kissing people he doesn't want to.
Carol is quiet for a long time, and Steve almost thinks he's made a mistake. But then she speaks.
"Okay. Let's make a plan."
And they do. Then suddenly Steve is untouchable. Carol teaches him how to see the weakness in people and call it out. How to wield his facial expressions as a weapon and a shield. How to put on the air of being the most important person everywhere you go so well that everyone else begins to believe it. How to fall back on the fact his parents are rich, gone often, and, almost most importantly, well known in the community. It gives Steve's name a weight to throw around.
More importantly, all of that culminates in people no longer asking things of him. Instead, they look to him to take the lead, they wait to be asked. It makes Steve feel in charge of his life for once.
But now.
Now, years later, having survived a spring break from Hell and averted the apocalypse, Steve watches Eddie hang off Argyle with ease, fling an arm over Jonathan's shoulder while laughing at a joke, easily pull Dustin into a headlock or wrestling match.
Easy touches that Steve should be able to do, too. A jealousy wells inside him almost as much as the unease he feels in his stomach at the mere thought of letting them know they're allowed to reach out and touch him, too. That Eddie's allowed to reach out and touch.
But then he remembers what happened when he let people have that power over him and he can't bring himself to do it.
It settles in Steve, then, the realization. When you become untouchable, you're unable to touch.

Well dang so if TJ Health Pavilion presses charges against me because they’re afraid for their life because apparently a person who has severe health problems that are not being addressed by monkeys that’s a very threatening thing to you guys three of you are just our is it everybody I don’t know it seems like they get in a really tight net work at the pavilion the receptionist and everybody just join into this very anti-human behavior they sit around and talk about peoples conditions all day long and everything else the medical doctors there real pieces of shit
A person who is a public figure is a frightening thing because she doesn’t own a gun even though she can buy a gun she doesn’t carry a knife even though she could carry a knife and should carry a knife she doesn’t even carry pepper spray because of that thing that happened when she was eight years old seven years old eight years old now now I was eight yeah that’s so scary Doctors I can see that 5 foot one 100 pounds dealing with osteoarthritis or a misaligned back dealing with classism dealing with sexism from you motherfuckers and I am going to mess up Dr. Christopher but you know what here’s the funny thing is that actually yeah Dr. Ken is going to mess Dr. Barringer up and Dr. Barringer I don’t think he’s going to live I just have a bad feeling you guys that’s one of those who saying things he thinks he’s being a goddamn funny motherfucker and he’s not who sang is that what you said is there an Indian joke is that a pistachio joke that I haven’t heard doctor? Why don’t you go fuck your fucking idiot self go back to Florida besides I have a doctor down there who already wants to cut your fucking face off
#Dr.JamesHeltsley #LieutenantColonelDoctorJamesChickenBabyRapistHeltsley
My ears … Jesus
Oh also you guys that Betty Jean woman that mafia lady that works for Brian? Do you know the one with the false teeth
Oh I was supposed to leave Bryant in there because that was the ironic joke I understand well Betty Jean keeps bothering me with spam messages oh she’s one of those is it suggested than that if it’s a Nelliebell Bettijean situation that they’re being forced to molest or rape people
There’s a possibility to it but if they want their freedom they will write out the medical doctors
And besides why is Betty Jean messaging me with these weird text messages and shit about like photos of me on some kind of photo booth thing or something what is that Betty Jean like it was like stock images or some shit
And then he decides that he wants to call the Pepper Pike Police Department on me and they are calling me so much that I already know that they are trafficking little babies among other disgusting things but the FBI is watching that as well
You see officers this is not a situation for your egos to be out of control this is a situation where you need to sit the fuck down shut the fuck up and figure out how you’re going to get out of life imprisonment for trafficking those children in Ohio Pepper Pike Police Department harassing bastard son of a bitches
You could’ve just left me the fuck alone and I might’ve actually thought that you were a person who did police work instead of being a harassing white male as usual fuck yourselves
But Brian is so much smarter than you he says so much smarter I don’t think he is I think that he and James Heltsley both feel really really scared
Is Ricky OK?
Oh Catherine I don’t know if you’re familiar with Ricky Perkins or not it’s a very very important situation and I think that Dr. Brian might’ve been laughing yesterday but we really really need to make sure that these kids are being watched and taken care of because these doctors are going to try to kill the rest of us traffic survivors I mean
