What’s the difference in their treatment?

penelope has always been the production’s favourite. shonda has made no effort to hide as much. meanwhile kate and simone have been sidelined and disrespected every step of the way.

penelope has been a regular character for two whole seasons before her own, given her own arcs as well as storylines for her entire family (who have inexplicably been regulars too since s1 in spite of having little to offer to the story).

meanwhile kate, introduced in s2, wasn't even explored as a character in her own right during her season, never mind earlier on in the show. as for her family? while portia was getting her second season's worth of screen time and side plots, the FMC’s mother figure mary was just there to silently stand in the background for most of the story.

during kate and anthony's season, penelope was at the centre of all the promo, featuring in the EW photoshoot secured for the show instead of the main couple, getting a solo promotional poster when she was just a supporting character, even having her face on the thumbnail of the s2 teaser (meanwhile the official s2 trailer, with kate and anthony on the thumbnail, has been made private by netflix for two years now on youtube. make of that what you will.)

nicola also had the opportunity to do promo with her future co-lead back in s2. not the leading lady though! why give simone her time to shine when you can sell a love triangle instead?

as i said: all that for penelope in another couple’s season. before it was even her time to shine.

moving on to season 3 it's pretty obvious who's the sidekick and who's the main event (hint: it's not the one named bridgerton). while kate (supposedly the leading lady of s2 and future head of the titular family) was relegated to supporting character in her season, a love interest for the bridgerton male lead along with edwina, things aren't quite the same anymore. suddenly it's not the bridgerton brother this story is about– it's the “wallflower” waiting to “bloom” instead.

and of course you're not gonna make your star share her poster with another woman, are you? after all, her name’s not kate sharma.

it's all well and good to do that with kate but not with penelope. with her it seems that shondaland know what “leading lady” means.

just to recap: kate sharma is the only FMC in bridgerton who didn't have an official poster with her romantic lead and got no backstory over the span of “her” season. simone is the only leading lady in the bridgerton franchise who never got a photoshoot with her male co-lead or even did any promo with him as the leading couple.

penelope on the other hand is the only bridgerton character to get the star treatment for two seasons straight.

Once more I’m quite unsure as to why everyone feels the need to ignore the source material. Season 3 not being about Benophie still boggles my mind because why???!??!! Not to be a hater but Colin is uninteresting and unattractive (no hate to the actor he’s just not my type) to me. And I personally can’t stand Penelope (once again no hate to the actress) so I’m not really interested in this season tbh. On a side note there is a possibility to make Sophie a illegitimate granddaughter of Charlotte especially since in Queen Charlotte she says along the lines of how there are 50 illegitimate grand babies that [she] the crown ignores.

I know what you mean anon. Nothing against either of the actors playing the characters or the fans who like the ship, but Polin just isn't my cup of tea.

We all have our faves and mine is Benophie. I’m a Benophie and then a Franchael girl through and through.

That being said, despite me being a Benophie girl I don’t mind that they’ve skipped over Benedict. I mean I was initially pissed the hell off about it, but I think I understand now why Shonda did what she did.

This is gonna sound nonsensical, and weird, and is probably going to piss someone off(lol I’m the queen of that apparently👑), but there have been back to back to back interracial couples in Bridgerton.

I’m almost positive Sophie is going to be Black(🤞🏽) and while this show prides itself on diversity, I think they wanted to give white audiences a bone. So for that reason, she chose to push Polin’s season ahead.

Plus I think Shonda sees herself in Penelope(writer, “working woman,” the wallflower, and hater of other women💀).

I’m kinda glad she did push Polin’s season forward given what happened with the strike situation…

I do not mind waiting another two years for Benophie. I’ll “suffer” through this season for them and who knows, this season may surprise me and I may end up loving it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Now regarding, Sophie’s parentage, it would be interesting if they made her an illegitimate grandkid of Queen Charlotte and see how she has to deal with that. How the queen interacts with her, as well as the rest of the ton.

(I don’t think that in this scenario her being a bastard would be hidden or not common knowledge).

I know some people aren’t too fond of Sophie being Black🙃 a maid while Benedict is who is.

Her being QC's illegitimate granddaughter would be a way to kinda pivot from her being a maid while keeping the fact that she’s a bastard without a proper place in society.

I feel like the former is less important than her being the latter. She’s more than just her employment.

Sophie has to deal with the fact that she was robbed of a proper childhood, protection, financial security, love, and a sense of belonging. Yet she still manages to be a kind considerate human being with staunch morals and principles.

(I love girls who’ve been through so much, but still manage to survive and thrive. I blame Jane Eyre).

As long as Shonda tackles those issues and we see Benedict falling head over heels for her(even when he thinks he’s fallen for two different women🤣)I’m good with whatever happens.

The show has already made a lot of changes to the book. Some good some bad, but making Sophie one of many bastard grandchildren of the crown makes the most sense and has the potential to be the most interesting(for me at least).

A/N: I started this with the intention to have it be a little fluffy snippet but as always it's truly gotten away from me so! Enjoy this fluffy peek into our favourite large Regency family and their loves.

Pairing: Anthony Bridgerton x Reader

Loud laughter greeted Anthony as he pushed open the doors to the drawing-room of his home. Having left Bridgerton House for a brief meeting with the Duke of Hastings (eventually, they'd returned to their schoolboy friendships since his sister's marriage, after much cajoling from their respective, and formidable, wives), the Viscount was taken aback by the sudden presence of his eternally-expanding family. Anthony had hoped to find his wife alone on his return, fully looking forward to kicking off his boots and throwing his coat to one side before spending the rest of the beautiful day enjoying the love of his life in every place across the estate he could come up with. It appeared, however, that society had other intentions for him seeing as the said object of his affections was currently the centre of his siblings' attention in the centre of their brightest receiving room instead. Y/N had taken up prime position on his favourite chair, as she so often did when entertaining without him as if it provided her with a sliver of the comfort and support his presence did, and was flitting expertly between a conversation with Benedict about an exhibition they were hoping to visit across town and braiding Hyacinth's hair so that it sat just as she'd seen in a new kind of magazine.

His wife. His Viscountess. The reason he got up most mornings, the woman with the twinkle in her eye and usually the extra bun in her hand, the friend (how odd his younger self would have found him, he thought, to consider his wife his best friend) who had him laughing into his soup and lounging, among other activities, under the trees across the grounds. The person whose laugh always seemed to call to him across ballrooms and the face he sought whenever her hand was not against him. This woman who had him chase her through the season, asking for dances, bringing flowers, reading her favourite books, even sitting with her mother through tea on more than one occasion. His partner in all things public and private but importantly his biggest champion, even when perhaps he himself was not. This was the woman he would fight all the Dukes and Princes in the world for one moment with, let alone to have pledged his every day for the rest of his ridiculous and chaotic life.

It wasn't until he heard a most ungentlemanly guffaw erupt from the brother who had slid next to him, with a sandwich he'd clearly pinched from a tray by their family, that the eldest Bridgerton was finally pulled from his reverie. Anthony's siblings had never pulled their punches about ribbing their oldest brother at any opportunity, but since the arrival of their newest sister-in-law, they simply couldn't believe how much new content they had. As it was, Colin was still chuckling around his stolen sustenance. "Doesn't it just make you want to recite poetry from the rooftops dear brother mine? I can practically see the hearts in your eyes, Prince Charming."

Thankfully, Colin was rescued from his inevitable fate at the hands of the Viscount by a sudden eruption of laughter from the room before them. Their attentions are caught by the bright red blush now making its way across Benedict's face across from the bizarre sight of Eloise struggling to breathe and clinging to the Viscountess as if she were the only thing keeping her in her seat. Even their usually better-reserved mother appeared to be tittering behind her teacup and Y/N looked rather bashfully pleased with herself at the effect her comment had clearly had on her family.

"Are you sure you didn't happen upon our long lost sister and marry her accidentally?"

Anthony instinctively prepared his signature glower and what would inevitably have been a rather well-rehearsed and utilised chastising, but one glance across the room had the breath knocked from him rather uncharacteristically at the dazzling but mischievous smile being shot at him by his equally ethereal wife. As it had been since their very first meeting, all the noise and bodies around them seemed to melt away into a fuzzy haze. The bustle of rooms ceased to exist and there was nothing even his meddlesome family could do that would draw him from the gaze of the one person who seemed to peer directly into his soul and still come away beaming and with a face mirroring his own adoration.

Both elder Bridgerton boys wiggled their brows at him suggestively, inches away from making some unseemly joke or another, but Viscount Anthony Bridgerton was far too busy striding towards the woman grinning at him with their niece now settled contentedly atop her lap. Society be damned, he thought to himself, a wide smile gracing his face as he took her cheeks in hand and kissed her with every ounce of love and passion he held - for their past, present, and future.

People seem to misunderstand, particularly in a British context that racism is not merely using slurs but in the undertone of words and actions.

Whistledown's blasts tend to describe characters of colour using aggressive, dehumanising terms - such as referring to Kate as a beast and making Simon be this aggressive rake.

But Marina is where the racism shines. She knows that Marina is desperate, and scared with very few chances for her and her child. But what Penelope does is straight out of the white woman's burn book - slut-shaming a black woman and then having a cry about it as if she is a real victim.

If she genuinely did this because she cared about Colin or Marina, she could have told Eloise or even Colin privately that Marina was pregnant. But she was jealous that Colin genuinely cared for and liked Marina and that there was a chance that he would marry her anyway (something he confirms twice). This was not some mistake she made; she knew that writing that blast would not only embarrass them both but ruin Marina and chase her out of London.

And for the people to say that she was justified because of what Marina said about Colin viewing her as a wife, as an object of desire and Penelope as a sister - where was the lie? At that point, that's exactly how he viewed her. She was his friend, his little sister's best friend. He was not checking for Pen like that but he was falling in love with Marina and Marina liked him because he is nice and cared about her.

If you think Marina stating plain facts is a good enough reason for Penelope to cause her to try to k!ll herself, ruin her reputation and lead her into a loveless marriage, then you need to check your biases because, like Penelope, you might be a bit racist.

Let’s Talk Barlow & Bear v Netflix

[To my moots and anons who wanted S3 asks sorry yall I got carried away with this jksdfh so we’ll visit those asks tomorrow, anyways let’s dig in!] 

Shoutout to Franzi @anthonykatebridgerton​ for sending the court document link, bringing this up in our GC and to my attention. It was a wild ride reacting to it and discussing it with you and Lavi @sweetestviscount

It’s best to read everything to be well informed but I’ll do my best to summarise and will mostly be focusing on the highlights that caught my eye. Aights let’s get into it!

This case is basically a copyright infringement case against Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the creators of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical . If you just joined the fandom and watched the show for S2, here's some context. This musical started as a song for Saphne called Burn For You put on Tiktok by Abigail who did the vocals while Emily composed the music. The song blew up right after the show and they ended up making a full track list of songs that eventually ended up being released as a full album on various audio platforms

This is where the case for infringement starts because - I was surprised to find out that - Barlow and Bear never got permission to drop the album on offical platforms. This is bad because the rights fully belong to Netflix and B&B are profitting off it via the streams they get on the various music platforms.

It now ramps up because the girls put in a request for them to be able to perform live shows which was a big no no for Netflix. However, they said it was for charity to help out West End actors struggling post-pandemic. Here's the full rundown from the official complaint document from Section 34 to 36:

It's the way B&B and their legal team constantly kept telling Netflix it was a one time thing and their brand moving forward would be different and not attached to the Bridgerton Musical.

Take a shot everytime you read the line "Barlow and Bear assured Netflix..." That they wouldn't do [insert thing] then proceeds to do The Thing.

B&B really said "No, we don't do live performances and we don't want to be known as the Bridgerton girls."

Then proceeded to do exactly what they said they wouldn't.

I think the case is happening now because the biggest gripe Netflix and Bridgerton's team seems to have is the latest Kennedy Centre performance that happened a couple days ago and it was for profit unlike the UK charity performance. They brought out new songs and continued to exploit and profit off the show despite still not having a licence or permission to do so. And yet advertising that they did have permission from Netflix on their posters. Like guys why would you do that 💀💀💀

Netflix is also upset that this show took away from their official Bridgerton show which is The Bridgerton Experience which has also been set up in DC. Basically they're pissed they lost sales to an unofficial Bridgerton event. This is what I think acted as the catalyst to file for the suit.

Also want to hear the stupidest part and what made me firmly take Netflix's side? Netflix offered them a special licence to move forward with the live performances and look what these clowns decided to do:

This is PEAK "play stupid games and win stupid prizes". This bit especially frustrated me because I've heard how some drama teachers have had to pay out of their pockets for licensing for their clubs to put on plays and musicals but the Tiktok girlies think they are above it?? Especially when they have the money to pay for it too and it would have solved their 'permission' issue and wouldn't be in this mess.

All in all, usually I say Fuck corporations and big companies trying to take down the little guy aka independent artists but in this case, B&B are fully in the wrong. Especially the way they conducted themselves after Netflix told them multiple times not to do live performances and didn't even authorise permission for the album to be dropped on official platforms in the first place.

This post doesn't even begin to cover all of it so I really do recommend reading the whole legal complaint because the attorney who wrote it, Ginger Anders, did an extremely good job. It's easy to understand and very digestible, laying out all the facts and context from beginning to end.

I also liked her style of writing and I don't know if she intended for it to sound like that but at some point you can just tell she was done with their shit and was exasperated. Aside from the above image where the paragraph just ends with "Barlow and Bear refused." I could hear the facepalm lmao. This is my other favourite bit:

I can't wait to read the answer to this from B&B's lawyers and if the girls ever put out statements. Muliple news outlets have already picked this up so they must have seen it and now we wait. How do you picture your favorite Bridgerton couple after 20 years of marriage?

Hello, Eyra! 💜

It's actually a bit hard to answer (mainly because I've always struggle imaging the future 😂)... I'll answer focusing on a Modern Alternative Universe rather than focusing on the books, but I think the answer would still make sense if we omit the modern aspects!

I'd say they would be living happily together in their dreamt house (or flat, or bridge, or wherever), full of the things and memories and achievements that they have built together as a couple and individually (like titles degrees, prizes, diplomas, and the sort); perhaps with children because they would be that kind of couple that say "I want to know what the result of mixing our genes would be like".

They, of course, have faced pretty much "uglies" in their life (because life is not easy), and they have worked together, even if angry at the other, to overcome said uglies, bringing them even closer together.

I'd hope, after all those years together, their passion, dedication, thrill, and excitement are not lost, and they look at the other as the first day they discovered they loved the other.

Does this make sense? I don't know, but worth the try. 🫠😂

Hi!! I’ve been thinking about Polin & the inevitable Lady Whistledown reveal, and wondering whether they are going to actually have it all come out that Pen is LW publically or not. Obv Colin will have to find out in this next season, but I’ve kind of been thinking that actually Colin would LOVE being in on LW and maybe he and pen will continue to be LW together going into season 4–maybe with LW becoming more of an agent for social change? Obviously I am not a bridgerton book reader so idk how any of this plays out in that world, but I am just wondering what the tv show will do to resolve the LW secret identity thing for pen.

I can't see the show stretching the LW reveal TO THE PUBLIC after S4 (and in my opinion that's still pushing it. And yes S4 is not a typo). In the books, LW's identity was revealed to the public towards the end of RMB and it happened at a Hastings ball where Colin proclaimed his love for Pen and revealed her as LW at the same time. However, idk how they'll do it with how different show LW is to book LW (and most of it not in a good way 🥴)

I do like your idea anon of LW being an agent for social change -- we know Eloise has talked to Pen abt these topics when they were talking abt LW and LW/Pen already took some of Eloise's suggestions to heart. And I think that's the reason why I'm thinking Eloise is a more likely candidate to succeed or assist Pen as LW.

Also, I am still going back and forth with Colin's (possible) reaction to LW's reveal in S3, as one of the things I did not like abt book Colin was his angry outbursts. 🙃 (bless his heart, I love that man, I REALLY DO... but UMMM YEAH. 💀) I hope that is one of the changes they make with show Colin, bc I also worry that if they play into that book Colin trait in the show when he eventually finds out abt LW, then we will be in for an angsty as f*ck 3x07 and 3x08 😭😭😭

I like Simon and really enjoyed his banter with Anthony they are good scene partners. I’m going to ignore all the chauvinistic stuff with Daphne tho. I’d like to see how they interact with their newly found character development. Simon was clever and snarky so I could see him being suspicious. Realistically more people will realise that Pen is Lady W, I think the next to know are Portia, Colin, Kate and/or Anthony and maybe Lady Danbury. So bridgerton really skipped Eloise, Benedict and Francesca for Cunt hungry Colin and man pleaser Penelope. They both give me nothing but people who think they have it bad but literally live in luxury. Literally over the whole Bridgerton series after queen charlotte I don’t care anymore

Eh, Bridgerton is on a probation period for me. And I’ll say that even though I don’t particularly like either Colin or Penelope, at this point, I don’t care that they skipped over Benedict’s story for them.

(I have a theory of why they did this and if my theory is correct I’m happy as a clam).

And if we are going by book order Polin’s season should come before Eloise(who is book #5 and it doesn’t matter but I personally am uninterested in her character) and Francesca’s (love her/her book is my second favorite and I am excited to see her and Michael, but her book is #6).

Now the real reason why Bridgerton is on probation for me isn’t Benophie being skipped, it’s the issue of Sophie’s casting and how everytime you mention her (possibly) being Black, people start crying.

I’ll be honest and say if Shonda pulls another stunt and doesn’t finally cast a Black girl for Sophie Beckett my Black ass ain’t watching this shit anymore.

I don’t want to hear any it’s “bad representation” especially not from a bunch of non-Black women. Sophie isn’t a slave(she literally says she could’ve left anytime she wanted to which is something that slaves never could) and more importantly, she gets a happy ending.

And yes I know about Gregory’s book and no I don’t want to wait another five to six years for that child’s boring season(I give Polin crap, but their book is actually better than that dry mess) where he is spending half of it pinning after another girl. It’s a very strong possibility his season never happens or if it does happen it combines with Hyacinth which is unacceptable if that’s our only representation on this show.

Fortunately the rumors are that a casting call went out for a Black female lead for season 4 and people speculate Masali Baduza (who is stunning and talented) was the one who landed the role.

So I’m remaining cautiously optimistic that one of the these two rumors is true, but if not (as I’ve stated) season 3 will be the last season of this show I watch.

I already have one show(and racist fandom) that acts like Black women are the plague.

Hell, might as well say Black people period because some of these dumbasses have been crying about Michael being (more than likely) Black and saying there are “too many Black people”(it’s giving me HOTD fandom war flashbacks) on the show and it not being “diverse enough.”

Mind you they say all this even though the showrunner is a Black woman(which is why I expect Sophie to be Black cause I would never expect nor demand that from someone else), but instead of being understanding why most of the diversity would and should be Black they want her to mule for them, but I’m not supposed to say that since it hurts their feelings.

This show is plenty diverse, but because Shonda hasn’t completely stopped featuring Black people they are upset.

People want every season to be like season two and that’s fine and dandy, but Black people are under-presented in the media and not only that our representation is absolute shit riddled with stereotypes.

I don’t think Shonda(or I hope not) created this show to further sideline us so a Black Sophie is the hill I’m willing to die on. I’m not watching three seasons back to back to back with a non-Black lead and definitely not five seasons back to back 5x over with a non-Black female lead.

I will not be suffering through another anti-Black fandom whose showrunners prioritize and appease said non-Black racist fandom at the expense of Black people. That’s my grievance with the show.

Edwina not being at the wedding doesn't make sense to me? Why would the writers say that Edwina and Kate made up but then say she wouldn't be at the wedding? Also, it just negates their growth?

Here, we ignore stupid writing and Edwina was Kate's maid of honor at both ceremonies because they love one another and don't hide things anymore. Edwina helped make sure everything was perfect because she wants (as she said in the final ep) Kate to shine.

These are two sisters who love and support each other.

Also the book couple had chemistry, the show version does not!! All this education and they can’t fucking read our full arguments. The Greek shit aside, I knew adding the education qn would be a slippery slope this whole fucking convo is SO condescending. It’s giving the assholes who put down Simone for being a college dropout in comparison to CC’s Oxford degree.
