keeping up with competitive pokémon is an absolute nightmare because you either choose a favorite gen for Smogon Singles and pray the servers for that game never shut down lest you be forced to spend 12 minutes in queue for a match on Pokémon Showdown or you make a new team every year to keep up with VGC

Consider Captain Dex always punching up but never punching down. If anything always reaching down to bring up.
Dex always researching teams beforehand, including each individual player. As a result, he's not only well-informed about how to play; he's also known for being a nightmare (and doing so legally) to the arrogantly affluent and teams that are especially problematic. Yet he can also be encouraging (without being patronizing or going easy) to opposing players from sympathetic or marginalized backgrounds.
Dex's interactions with sports media. Him being suspicious of sports media is an understatement to say the least. It doesn’t stop him from usually being courteous and informative in his awkward way (even more so than the usual hockey speak), but he also isn't afraid to scoff or bristle (with some of the reactions reaching meme status) at stupid or inappropriate questions... even on national tv. Yet he'll be amicable with reporters who are just starting out. Kid reporters always get a good reaction from him, even after a bad game, and he'll even help them out with their interviews.
Dex interactions with fans and spectators. Sportsmanship dictates that players aren't supposed to talk back to the stands, but he clearly didn't get the memo. He's a catankerous smartass on the best of days and won't hesitate to vocally intercede when people jeer stuff that the officials should act on but don't. Yet he'll never brush off interactions with fans, especially if they are kids. Be it smiling for a picture or someone's selfie, giving away sticks... or even sometimes doing a little tricks and maneuvers on request. And under his captaincy, SMH increases its involvement in a lot of community programs and events.
All of this confuses the hell out of the talking heads when they discuss sportsmanship.

Sending a legendary/special pokemon out near Drayton has become a form of art to me (I don't even know why- it just started happening one day) and my broken humor particularly appreciates the 𝚙𝚒𝚗𝚔 𝚛𝚘𝚘𝚖.

Excluding the 'bring back the national dex' crowd, I'm one of like 14 people who are upset that ultra beasts aren't in scarlet and violet, but if they were we all know I would introduce Drayton to a Xurkitree at a moment's notice

Anyway, I finished Everblaze like three days ago but then I had to process a few theories and reread the information bit of Unlocked so this is technically late. But besides all that, which will be coming on a “half way there” wrap up style post after Lodestar, here are my thoughts after my Everblaze reread!
NOTE: I will be going back to my previous KOLTC reread thoughts and adding this as well because I forgot to but SPOILERS! I will be discussing everything I felt/noticed regardless of whether certain things were revealed in this book or in later books. So if you haven’t read the whole series I wouldn’t recommend this. (And if you don’t care then go off)
- I feel like this books strength is that when it starts it doesn’t stop. From Fintan’s healing onward it’s just bam bam bam with action or drama or mystery.
- Sophie is so iconic in this book. The Blackswan told her no and then she said, “UNO REVERSE!”
- Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeffffffffffffffffffffffffffeeeeeeeeee He hurts me in this book. Like look, it gets worse. We’ve all witnessed Neverseen Keefe, Legacy Keefe, UNLOCKED KEEFE! *shudders* But this is his early on set trauma pain, and I hate it.
- Fitz is actually nice in this book. Yes he has a lot to make up for after Exile, but I found his care for Sophie amid everyone detesting over the healing extremely charming and sweet.
- B I A N A !!!!!! Finally, after two books of being absolutely horrible she can have her icon arc. I love her in this book. I mean, the scene where Edaline gives some of Jolie’s old dresses to Biana rather than Sophie brings me some, shall we say, pain. But, that was unintentional on all fronts so it’s fineeeee. Plus Biana going bop bop to Gisela on Everest is a personal favorite moment of hers for me in the whole series.
- Oh Dex, where do I begin… mannnnnnnn, that circlet plot still annoys me to this day. I mean seriously, Dex? Your father is talentless and you’ve SEEN first hand how poorly people treat him over it but you’ll subjugate someone else to that WILLINGLY? For shame.
- I always wonder what his family thought in this moment. Specficlly, Juline. While we don’t know that she’s in the Black Swan at this point in the series, nor do we even meet Squall yet, I can’t help but wonder how she felt about witnessing this. Given that she’s in the collective, I doubt she was even happy that Dex was working with the council to create weapons, and then she had to witness Emery swear that anyone associated with Black Swan would be hunted down (aka her, lmao), AND THEN, she had to witness Sophie (the Moonlark) literally be nerfed in-front of the nation. Yikes.
- Generally speaking, the circlet plot is still really messed up. I would argue it’s one of the worst things the council present in the series did. Regardless of how many people perceived Sophie to be a danger to society, considering the circlets first version left her litteraly unconscious, then it’s second attempt left her physically and mentally weak, I would argue that’s torture to one of your citizens. But oh well. This is the council we’re talking about so are we really surprised?
- Can we talk about all of the non-council adults in that scene? Oh my god, we all know how protective Grady is of her, but seeing protective Edaline, Tiegran, and Elwin is so legendary.
- Grady in this book is double the pain. Like he was going through it in Exile, but that’s honestly worsened in this book. While his blame shifts from himself/The Black Swan, it immediately goes to the mysterious pyrokinetic (aka Brant) who he KNOWS killed Jolie and tortured Sophie during her kidnapping. At that point, he’s suffering from the fact that both his daughters suffered at the hands of the same person but he doesn’t know who it is. Then it’s revealed to be Brant, aka the person him and Edaline have been taking care of like a son for the past sixteen freaking years. WHEN I SAY THIS SERIES HURTS! I MEAN IT HURTS!
- That whole sequence is still sooooooo good. Grady’s rage, Sophie’s protectiveness, Brants mania. MY GOD! (Then there’s that really really really messed up line where Brant basically says he’ll kill Sophie but leave Grady alive basically just to make Grady suffer even more is still probably one of the most horrible throw away lines in this series. And that’s saying something)
- Silveny’s role in this book will forever pain. Not as much as in Flashback but close.
- The whole aromark subplot makes no sense to me as a student currently in biology. This is my favorite series of all times, and yes, it is fantasy, but I don’t think Shannon Messenger entirely understands what an enzyme is…
- The Fintan healing scene still pains me to this day. Especially when you find out Kenric kind of knew he probably wasn’t gonna make it. Plus those scenes are just so well written.
- Kenric is still a character that baffles me, something we’ll touch on further when I get to my rereads of Unlocked and Stellarlune. I always find myself wondering if he GENUINELY cared for Sophie. His constant gentle teasings when he’s around her, the fact that he’s the councilor with her during her second inflicting session after her really horrible first one, you get the gist. Did he genuinely care for her and see her as a symbol of hope? Or is it simply that he looks at her and sees Oralie’s daughter? I doubt we’ll ever get the full answer to this given that he’s dead as of this book, but it’s still something to consider.
- Okay, here’s where my notes come in. FIRST NOTE! Page 89, and this one isn’t about future theories or anything, I just find it really interesting that one of the poems Brant writes to Jolie is both an ode to her an ode to fire. Again, at the end of this book we know WHY, he’s a pyrokinetic blah blah blah. I just never noticed.
- Pages 156-158 are both sad and cute. Seeing Sophie try to comfort Keefe about needing more of his skin melted off pains me. Worsened by when he’s later like, “My mom actually seemed like she cared about me this time.” (Not verbatim) PAIN PAIN PAIN PAIN PAINNNNNNNNN!
- Page 189. Here begins cognates Sophie Foster and Fitzroy Vacker. From here on out dear Keepers, take a shot of Lushberry Juice.
- HERE WE HAVE A MADDDDD SKIP: 324-325. I’m sorry, but I could really use some somnalene. My restless anxious can’t sleep ass really needs somnalene. Why can’t this exist irl?
- Page 409. This is something that just, bothers me. Keefe says, “Though of course my mom told me I fastened it to loosely and insisted I repin it. Twice.” (Verbatim) So like, Gisela is 100% a horrible person who just didn’t want Keefe to lose the pin because that would mean they couldn’t find them. I HATE HER! *angry pillow punching*
- Page 482. Emery calling Sophie, “Not Normal” is so shitty. I don’t care if she technically isn’t. Shamming a thirteen year old in front of the world before maiming her? NOT COOL MAN!
- Chapters 43-44. Peak Sophie dumbassery. “Read the ogre kings mind!” Her dumb dumb brain said. “It won’t be that bad!” Her dumb dumb brain said.
- It went bad
Anyway, Everblaze was fun. But most of the mysteries presented here have been solved. The next book, Neverseen on the other hand, well, that’s just getting started isn’t it?
(I’m so melodramatic sometimes lmao)

Forever going to romanticize the Gen V games and experience. People went on how terrible the Pokémon designs were so the games by default sucked snd that's a damn shame. You can play them now and appreciate them but you just had to be there with the DreamWorld and all the neat little skins you could get for the C-Gear and the Pokedex which you just cannot do anymore. Like I could never restart my games cause I do t want to lose my cute Bianca Pokedex and my Piplup C-Gear. DreamWorld was also super fun with bring able to play games and make a little house for yourself and plant berries to take to the main games. And also catch Pokémon with special abilities.
Also, maybe people weren't impressed with Gen V Pokémon and pissed that they couldnt use any previous Pokémon BW prior to National Dex but I'm still to this day impressed that they were able to make an entire Pokedex's worth of new Pokémon. Even more than the original Gen I games.
Though they did open the Pokedex up a bit more in B2W2 which rectified the issue people had with it. Still, I didn't mind having no previous Pokémon available in BW. But B2W2 was great in it's own right with being sequel games, giving you a different path to go through Unova, and thar phenomenal post game. It was so fun going through the Black Tower/White Treehollow gaining exp for my mons and then being awarded with a shiny Pokémon at the end. And the world tournament? *chefs kiss* I was fortunate enough to have a Japanese copy of White 2 so I got to download and participate in the special tournament against Ash's BW rivals. How happy I got to battle Stephan. Not to mention how the tournament brought back almost every notable trainer from previous games to battle.
tl;dr Gen V was great and underappreciated upon release.

im glad theres no national dex in pokemon sv bc its impossible to get 1000 pokemon reasonably PLUS theres no fucking reason to bring back every single pokemon. i hope we keep at having limited pokemon in games bc god. its too many. bring some pokemon back make new ones whatever, but make it Small and the focus on making them quality. also legendaries should Not leave their og regions

i dont mind any dex cuts. i think trying to bring some fresh life into each generation's metagame is a good decision. what i do mind is that the national dex numbering system is completely gone. ever since gen 8, we have no idea what pokedex number the pokemon really have. there is internal data, but it's all messed up and full of holes. i remember back in the day learning important pokedex numbers (legendaries and starters) like if you go 493 i go that's arceus yo. can't do that shit anymore

I have no evidence for this other than it makes sense to me, a rando on the internet, but given we are at 905 Pokemon, I think it would make sense if Gen 9 introduces 95 total Pokémon, (maybe like 85 in the main game and then 10 in Legends/ScarVi extra content/whatever)
Then Gen 10 introduces no new Pokémon but brings back the national Dex so you can use all 1000 species of Pokémon.

Did you or did you not protest to “bring back the national dex” in “pokemammals roller and brella”?
Agent 3: As long as Keepaflu isn't in the game I'll probably play it regardless.
Not a big fan of it at all. I'm probably the wrong person to ask though...

I think modern pokemon has some issues at the base design level that stems from the pushback against bw and the subsequent success of b2w2 which, also happens to run up against the jump to 3d which brings its own issues.
First: there are so many pokemon from older generations in each new game. This is a weird one because it doesnt feel like a problem. Havent pokemon fans been bitching about dexit for years? It is and here's why. It doesnt give new pokemon room to shine, and it reduces the number of new pokemon it's reasonable to expect. The two games with the most new pokemon are RB and BW, and thats no accident. Each one started with an empty dex and had to fill it on its own. With RB that was because they were the first, and with BW it was an intentional choice.
The key difference between BW and modern switch pokemon is that you could still bring every single pokemon (except certain rarities like spiny-eared pichu) into BW. They were still programmed into the game, despite not having wild encounters in most circumstances. All the same, many fans panned the idea. They hated the games before playing them specifically because of what makes them great. B2W2 was in many ways a response to this blowback. "Oh, you want older pokemon back? Here. Fucking. Take as many as you want i guess. Early Riolu or whatever fuck you."
Unfortunately the message they took moving forward was not "B2W2 were successful because we built a full dex of pokemon and THEN added in the old favorites" it was closer to "people mostly just wanna see their old favorites so lets get those in first and worry about new mons later."
This is also incidentally an attitude that pervades many pokemon fangames and rom hacks. Sometimes its fun to have access to every pokemon ever. Sometimes it feels like they really REALLY want me to ditch my new friends in favor of the old standbys.
To me, an ideal gen 10 game would have every old pokemon programmed in, but access would be limited. Just like BW. I want to have my buddies in there eventually, but for the first adventure I just want to meet something new and exciting! I think ideally wild encounters of old pokemon would be hidden behind the national dex. Remember that? Once you obtain the national dex (and you SHOULD obtain the national dex) i think every area should have a much wider variety of pokemon that suddenly includes previous generations. I think there should be outbreak-exclusive encounters too.
Of course, this could also be put behind a dlc paywall which..mm no thanks please stop doing dlcs
I just. I miss being forced to use new pokemon rather than handed a fuckton of old pokemon and a few newbies. You know?

I want to make a series where I discuss ghost pokemon which are my favorite type.
Tw//mentions of death because these are ghost type Pokémon and death… I’m not sure if there are any more triggers so tell me if they are and I’ll watch out for them in the future!
I decided to do it based on the National Dex so the first one we have is Ghastly, on National Dex #92. So most basic information is that Ghastly are Ghost and Poison types. Their ability is Levitate, which causes them to not be affected by ground type and spikes and poison spikes.
They have a 50/50 gender ratio and their egg group is Amorphous. The average height is 1.3m and 4 '03". The average weight is 0.1kg and 0.2lbs.
Ghastly are 95% gas made up of Carbon Monoxide and Iodine Vapor. (Thank you Scientific Pokedex) the other 5% are apparently souls according to an Alola research paper and their pokedex!
So we have the most basic information. Now onto more complex information about them. Do not enter abandoned buildings, which is where Ghastly’s like to hang out!! As most poison types, Ghastly are actually poisonous however since this is the first in the evolution line their toxic is actually not fast acting however they are deadly so if you encounter a wild Ghastly and have been touched by it. Actually even if you haven’t, please check with the pokemon center or a hospital.
Ghastly’s most of the time actually suffocate their victims. So they never have to use their poison, but they still have it. They tend to stay in abandoned buildings or go out in the darkest parts of night so either bring a really strong flashlight or a pokemon with a wind move.
However despite the warnings that I put on, non wild ghastlys are really affectionate and can even shapeshift which is something I should have said earlier.
Now onto more historical uses of ghastly… it was mostly assassinations… Ghastly leaves a small portion of its gas on whatever it touches and so until about roughly 50 to 60 years ago Ghastly’s were untraceable since you could either have died from poison or from suffocation. So back then if you have a Ghastly you could have been a suspect for murder. It still applies now, but only if Ghastly’s gas was found around them.
So yeah! First ghost pokemon down and 69 more to go!
(Ooc: this is a new series I want to try where I get to talk about ghost pokemon and talk about hc lore! Which is basically really obscure stuff like what type of materials their clothes would be made from. Cultural food and just food in general. Stuff like that. I love researching these things and I guess expanding pokemon lore in a really minuscule way. If anyone is interested in these, or have blogs similar that I would love to read, then message me or something… i should really figure out how this site works lmaooo)
