I hate what gritty realism has done to how we tell stories in fiction. Apparently, a story isn't compelling anymore, unless a beloved hero dies in it. If you want to get extra spicy, the beloved hero should be killed for no reason. Because shock value, I guess.

That's stupid. If a beloved character is in trouble, you don't just leave them there, you rescue them. You save them. That's what stories are about.

"But Arkon," you say, "That's not believable! When people get trapped in those same kind of situations in real life, they die! Getting rescued from impossible situations is unrealistic!"

Yeah, no shit.

But if I want disappointment and gritty realism and death, I can just read the news. I want triumph! I want redemption! I want victory for the characters I care about! A noble sacrifice has its place, but not in every story. Give me something to believe in, give me a reward for getting invested in these characters. Don't yank the carpet out from under me for daring to care about them and then point and laugh when I'm upset, as if vulnerability is a weakness. If this is fiction, prove it! Defy those impossible odds! Show me why they are heroes!

In conclusion:

A daring rescue against impossible odds is always better than a pointless heroic sacrifice.
