i remembered something i eventually wanted to make a post about and idk if its something i'm personally just looking into too much or whatever but it's just been simmering in my mind almost forgotten since march i think.
i thought it'd be kinda interesting if the time/date of the areas (past, future, etc), specifically in relation to n. gin, n. brio, cortex and n. tropy, correlated to the way they think.
n. gin's behaviour in crash 4 kinda says to me that he isn't one to dwell on the past all that much even though he definitely could considering all he's been through. His mind is on his current objective(s), whether that objective is work related or personal is irrelevant because it's about figuring out how he's going to get there and what's next.
n. brio is very obviously caught up in the past and is what's driving him forward at this point. it's a pretty significant thing he talks about in his levels, getting even with cortex being the main one. lamenting the fact that he doesn't truly have any friends either is another.
cortex is a little similar to n. brio albeit different reasoning. he's stumbling a bit on his past failures which i'd say would be hard ignore when you have someone like uka uka to contend with, though it's not really something that holds cortex back. he even tries (fails) to fix his biggest failure by physically going back to the past.
the fact that the year for n. tropy's area is unknown suits him well imo. since time is his speciality he might not always look at things from a particular view in time but also, he's just kinda spiteful which just backfires on himself and his plans considerably no matter the angle he's looking at things from.
i'm not sure if i worded that all in the best way but it's still interesting to me.

What A Crash Bandicoot Character Can Teach Us about Toxic Relationships
This fantastic article by Cole D from plumjuicegaming unfortunately went down with the site it was hosted on. Luckily, the Wayback Machine archived a copy, which I now share with my fellow N. Brio fans on tumblr. ^w^
Note that it was written in Aug. 2019, before the announcement/release of It's About Time. Text in (italics and parentheses) was a caption for an image that is no longer viewable.
Video game platforming villains are repetitive, predictable clowns.
As much as I love them—and I do—these characters do the same thing every single time. They kidnap a princess or steal a MacGuffin or attempt to seize power in some kingdom, and they never. Change. Course.
Of course I'm mainly talking about the ones who appear in more than one game, so I can't be too hard on the Lord Fredriks or the Sorceresses of the world, however one-note they may be. You know who comes to mind when I say "platformer villain"—Bowser, Eggman, Dr. Wily, King K. Rool...all of these jerks try the same thing over and over, and they just never seem to truly give up, even when their skin melts off in a pool of lava.
It's sort of an inevitability of the genre, you could say; most platformers don't have super involved stories, so when you need to crank out an Excuse Plot for the ninth installment of your jump'n'run franchise, you usually don't feel the need to pull out all the stops in the villain department. You stick with what's familiar, with what the fans will recognize. It's why the Mario series never branches out with new bad guys anymore. It's why we're still seeing Dr. Wily after all of these years. It works, people like these characters, so the developers keep on using 'em! No problem, right?
Well, no, not really. I mean, I freaking love Bowser. And when King K. Rool was replaced by a walrus copy of himself, that decision was met with cold disappointment. Usually, there's no problem with using the same villain over and over again—not at all.
But the way the Crash Bandicoot series does this is...interesting. On the surface it fallows the same practice as your Marios and your Mega Men: you've got Neo Cortex as the main villain in nearly every game, with a rotating cast of misfits serving as henchmen for boss fights. But there's one dork who stands out as the one guy who called it quits, seemingly, for good. Of course, I'm talking about Dr. Nitrus Brio.
(He doesn't have one screw loose, but he is a little nuts.)
You may not remember if you haven't played the games in a while, but this guy was once just about as important as Cortex. The two doctors stood side-by-side and worked together to create crazy mad scientist stuff like deranged kangaroos and gun-toting weasels, and Brio even served as the penultimate boss in Crash 1 instead of siccing another mutant on the poor bandicoot. The problem was that Cortex never really seemed to respect the contributions that Brio made to their work—he took credit for the Evolvo-Ray, the device that mutated all of Cortex and Brio's minions as well as Crash Bandicoot himself. Brio never had the self-esteem to step up and claim ownership despite the fact that he invented the thing.
Fast forward to Crash 2: Cortex Strikes Back. We see Brio again, via hologram, and he finally airs his grievances out loud to a very confused Crash. We learn that he invented the Evolvo-Ray, and that he's now developed an intense hatred for Cortex as a direct result. Brio gets his revenge on Cortex by having Crash gather up the gems, and the frenemies use their energy to destroy his spaceship.
And that...was the end of N. Brio's story.
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, the most popular game in the franchise, did not feature N. Brio in the slightest. Crash Team Racing doesn't even offer him as a racer. His and Cortex's union was now just a memory, like a middle school friendship that fizzles out before ninth grade. It's strange, too, because CTR even brought back some characters who had been long abandoned, like Papu Papu and Pinstripe. But they didn't think to include the guy who created Crash?
The thing about the Crash Bandicoot series is that villain characters are rarely retired. You'd be hard pressed to find a game after Crash 1 that doesn't feature Tiny Tiger, Dingodile or N. Gin in some way, to say nothing of Cortex himself. So why did this once-prominent figure go gently into the night? Why did Naughty Dog throw him away like a broken beaker?
Well, I believe that Nitrus Brio was less a villain in this scenario, and moreso a victim. A victim of a toxic relationship with Dr. Neo Cortex, who stole his inventions and never showed even a modicum of respect for his colleague. That's why after settling the score in Crash 2, Brio removed himself from the situation—there was no longer anything to be gained by involving himself in the affairs of Cortex or Crash or Nitrous Oxide because he'd had enough. He'd done everything there was to do at this point—playing the villain? Didn't go so well. Siding with Crash? Worked out pretty great, but now that was done. Brio never really had a reason to return to center stage of a Crash game, so like any autonomous human being would do, he decided to end his involvement with all parties.
This might seem silly given that, well, this is a silly series—a series where most of the villains you fight are mutated animals who speak with accents or broken English. A series where you collect fruits to get extra lives like you're some kind of ape with a tie. In other words, it's a cartoony platformer—the developers Naughty Dog probably weren't intending to include subtext of an abusive partnership, were they?
I would argue that this doesn't matter.
Regardless of authorial intent, N. Brio's story is inspiring. Have you ever been friends with someone who never seemed to care about you or your accomplishments? Has anyone ever taken credit for something you've done, whether that be at work or in your personal life? N. Brio was in a situation just like this, and he...just left.. No coming back for round three, not even coming back for the fun kart racer where even the Japanese bootleg character was invited! Why would he want to race go-karts with the man who stole his inventions and wasted years of his life? No, as far as Naughty Dog was concerned, that was where Brio's tale ended. That was the last we were to see of the Simpsons-looking scientist, and that was for the best. Perhaps he went on to become a bartender, or a disc jockey, or even a well-regarded inventor in his own right—as long as he was away from Cortex, I'm sure he was happy.
It's just too bad that the other developers didn't pick up on this.
Now, I know: this is all just fan interpretation to begin with. There's no real evidence that Naughty Dog strictly intended for Crash 2: Cortex Strikes Back to be Brio's final appearance for the rest of time (though I could argue that leaving him out of the all-star kart racer was pretty damning). This is just how I've come to understand the character over the years, but regardless of what I thought or wanted, N. Brio would go on to appear in several games after the Crash Bandicoot series left the hands of Naughty Dog.
And I think that's kind of a shame.
The very first post-ND game was Crash Bash, and wouldn't you know it—Brio's back, aligned with Cortex once again like nothing ever happened. Yeah, it's a party game, but it still has a story justifying its events in-universe, and with only eight playable characters it would have been so easy to throw in Pinstripe or Komodo Joe or the freaking hog from the first game to take his place on the roster. But as if to intentionally poke a hole in my entire theory, Eurocom reintroduced N. Brio and deleted any kind of progression he might have made in his past two appearances. He was Cortex's buddy once again, fighting for the evil side! Woohoo!
Next was Twinsanity, and this game has the decency at the very least not to partner him up with Cortex again. Instead, he works with Dr. N. Tropy to find...treasure, or something, and gets defeated by Spyro (this was a weird game). It's not an awful portrayal, but frankly, unnecessary. Why is Brio involving himself with these rejects again? When has he ever been motivated by wealth? Didn't this game have enough villains already? At the end of the day, I can only be thankful that he and Cortex weren't buddy-buddy again—although partnering up with someone who was still allied with Cortex is...an odd strategic decision.
Brio's final appearance, and likewise the series's final appearance for about eight years was in Mind over Mutant, an even weirder game than Twinsanity that has South Park cutscenes and self-aware humor. For once I believe he was actually done a little bit of justice. He's back with Cortex, but this is actually portrayed as an anomalous development in the dynamic of the characters—it's made clear that Cortex and Brio were not on good terms prior to the events of this game.. He's gone slightly mad like any good scientist should be, constantly taking credit for things he didn't invent in a humorous over-correction of his previous passive nature. It's also pretty funny that drinking from strange beakers, something he did in his original boss fight for practical purposes, is now something that he just does for fun. It could just be his portrayal by the always-fantastic Maurice LaMarche, but I really like this take on Brio. If they couldn't leave him be, at least they gave him a continuation that made sense for his character.
(All of these screenshots are from the same game.)
Personally I tend to ignore Brio's appearances in later games (but I don't ignore the games themselves—how does that work?). I think his story was told best in the span of two games, and also by nature of his absence in the following two. There's no need to bring back every single character who's ever appeared, whether you're in charge of a dumb video game franchise or an HBO original series, just because you want to have fan service and continuity nods in a shallow attempt at recreating the good old days. A healthy balance of old and new is always best, and if something seems to be a relic of the past, maybe that's for a reason.
So what can we learn from Dr. Nitrus Brio? I think it's important to realize that if you find yourself in a toxic or abusive relationship, whether it be personal or professional, it's always best to leave that relationship behind. Of course, this is sometimes hard for those who rely on their abusers for financial support. Some don't even know that they're in an unhealthy situation until it's too late. Whatever the case, it can be a complicated, sticky mess; but at least N. Brio shows that if you're given a clear out, you should just take it. That's advice I live by, and N. Brio deserves all the credit for that.

Hi! I just read an extremely popular Brio fic and it was wonderfully well written but I found I kept losing interest. I realized it’s bc while Rio felt somewhat authentic for the AU, Beth seemed like a completely different character. There wasn’t really much background information on her so the changes didn’t really make sense to me, even in an AU setting.
How do you approach AU settings to make sure the characters feel connected to the originals? Like in your pornstars AU I can still see Beth in there, even if it’s not something I would have ever expected of her! So I’m curious as to how you approach that.
Also why do you think this seems to happen more to Beth versus Rio? Are people just projecting themselves onto her you think? Idk I just feel like she has such a strong personality that I’m curious why I seem to feel that way in some fics.
Anyways, love your work 🩷🩷🩷
Hi! Thanks for your lovely words, although I'm sorry for your experience with that other fic. It can be such a bummer when we're overall enjoying a story - whether fic, or books, or shows - but for whatever reason it's just not quite landing. I know the feeling pretty well, haha.
For me, I find that capturing a character in all writing is basically about distilling two things:
What they want
What they need
These two factors in so many ways embody the main narrative arc of a story. In fact, many author talks I've been to suggest that plot in its entirety is a matter of asking three questions - what does a character want? What's standing in their way stopping them from getting what they want? And how will they overcome this obstacle? I don't entirely agree with this, and it's not a method of plotting that I personally subscribe to these days (although I have used it in the past and still sometimes find it helpful when I'm stuck), but I do think it can be useful to think about in terms of the role character motivation contributes to story overall.
More to the point though, I find dividing a character's wants and needs to be super useful, both in terms of analysis and writing, as to me, it's those wants and needs that really feed into everything when it comes to characterisation.
Beth's actually a great example of this as her want vs need are both complimentary and frequently in conflict with each other:
What Beth wants is to earn enough to save her house, provide for her children and get herself, her sister and her best friend to a point of financial security that doesn't leave them in a state of constant free fall.
What Beth needs is to feel real self worth, to connect with the woman inside of herself beyond wifehood, motherhood and even sisterhood, and to be seen and acknowledged as that woman by people she respects (i.e. Rio, but not just him). She needs to be seen as capable, and to feel autonomous and in control of her future.
Both of these wants and needs have greater implications when filling in the details of a character. In Beth's case, her adultification as a child in raising her sister feeds her lack of identity as an adult at the start of the series and her need to find herself (she's been raising children her whole life!), Dean's cheating compounds those feelings of self-worth, and him losing the family house is what becomes the catalyst for Beth to act. Her wants are created due to the situation Dean forces her into, her needs have been there for a lot longer than that.
When writing fic in general, but especially AUs, I try not to change the wants or needs of the characters. Like I said, I tend to view them as pretty crucial to the character overall, but I also think those wants and needs are what makes me feel connected to them as opposed to other characters or other shows. Those are the things I like! Why would I want to change them?
And anyway, I tend to find it super fun figuring out how those wants and needs might guide characters in a different setting. In both the porn star AU and the pirate AU, I really wanted to use the time period, the industry and the context of those story worlds to see how Beth might navigate her needs and wants, and to see how those factors might influence the shape of her story arc. It was pretty interesting to realise that I didn't think much changed, even in the pirate AU which is set so far in the past. I hope that means I understand her as a character, or at least, I guess, my interpretation of her, haha.
As for other writers - - yeah! I mean, in some ways I do think Rio's probably easier to write because his own wants and needs are more ambiguous on the show and he's therefore a little more malleable in fic. A lot about him can be true when we ultimately saw so little of him, whereas Beth, as you said, has such a strong personality and defined character that to change elements of her voice or her background, or to make certain decisions for her, can leave us with the age old feeling of: 'she wouldn't do / say that'.
I do think that, especially by the end of the series, there was a not insignificant portion of the fandom who didn't like her so ultimately wrote her differently (I personally had issues with the fact that so many people wrote Rio as punishing and Beth as both taking and deserving that punishment, which is why some high profile fics in the fandom aren't of particular interest to me), but I think there are other factors as well.
Yes, some projection, yes, some who mostly wrote her to be able to write about Rio, yes, some who were simply disinterested in her interiority, but I also think GG was a lot of people's first fandom, and a lot of people's first time writing fic, and that ultimately, Beth was a complicated character who only got more complicated over the four seasons of the show. She's not easy to write, and I do think the fandom was chockfull of talented writers, but a lot of talented writers who were still ultimately pretty new to writing.
I've been writing for a long time (man, I think I worked out that I posted my first fic when I was about 13 which was like, twenty years ago now, haha, and I had my first short story published in a journal at 19 too), and ultimately writing is a skill like anything else - you get better the longer you do it. :-)

So I’m kinda new to your page, but from what I’m seeing so far I LOVE your posts! Anyways I’m not sure if you’ve answered this question already or something similar, but I’m curious; how do you think Good Girls would have ended/how would YOU have wanted Good Girls to end? Very interested to hear about your theories!
Thank you, Anon! That’s so nice of you!
Would you care to read 66 chapters and 272,000 words of what I wanted the Brio ending to be? 😂😂😂
But in all seriousness (as much seriousness as fiction analysis can warrant), canon left these characters in a place of guarded amicability. And this means that almost anything is possible for them. I would imagine Rio would always be a touch more emotionally honest and volatile than Beth. And Beth would be both obsessed with and in denial about what Rio is to her. I don’t think Beth could separate this new life from her feelings for Rio. He’s too integral to her self discovery, so she wouldn’t want to individuate from him despite claiming that she does. And Rio is equally as fixated on the possibilities he’s denied himself, but no longer can because he’s seen how willing he is to compromise everything he’s believed in for so long because of Beth.
So what this means is that they’re bound forever. They could keep dancing around each other, pretending and denying. They could sometimes give in to their desires. They could use their feelings for each other against each other, or they could use them as an excuse for some much-needed softness. Whatever it is, they’re doing it together. They need each other’s validation too much and they can’t replicate it in anyone else. So they’re basically married. 😂
What do you think, Anon? Where do you think they’ll end up in a post-canon world?

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Tumblr media
The New York Times Bestseller, A Winner of the Alex Award, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for First Fiction, named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything--instead, they check out large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele's behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore's secrets extend far beyond its walls.
Rendered with irresistible brio and dazzling intelligence, Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore is exactly what it sounds like: an establishment you have to enter and will never want to leave.

Do You Want Your Website to Appear on The First Page We Are Here To Help You
What Is SEO?
SEO Is an Acronym for Program Optimization, Which Is the Process of Perfecting (Optimizing) A Website So That It's More Readily Set Up Online. SEO Primarily Focuses on Perfecting a Website’s Rankings in Search Engines Like Google and BING. The Upper and Internet Point Appears in The Hunt Machine Rankings, The Lesser the Liability It Will Be Visited. When An Online Point Receives Further Business, Further Business Is Liable. There Are Several Different Types of Website Optimization. Please Find Below an Overview of Colorful Types of SEO Services
Specialized SEO Analysis of The Website’s Specialized Factors That Impact Its Rankings.
Tumblr media
Code Efficiency
An Important Factor for Website Optimization Is the Effectiveness of The Law with Which the Website Is Developed. Bloated, Hamstrung Law Can Hinder a Website’s Cargo Time and Dilute Law-To-Textbook (On-Page Content). Formerly We Optimize On-Page Content, The Optimization Is Stylishly Entered by Google When the Website Law Is Minimized. Google More Readily Understands the Semantic Meaning of a Page When There Is Lower Law. This Helps to Support Rankings.
Website Speed
Google’s Ranking Algorithm Is Continually Streamlined to Support the Experience of Its Druggies. Also, To Deliver Accurate Results That Address a Question, Google Factors into Its Rankings the Speed of An Online Point. A Brisk Website Provides a Superior Stoner Experience to An Online Point Caller. All Other Effects Being Equal, Google Will Deliver a Brisk Website Before a Slower Point Because a Caller Will Presumably Have a Far Better Experience with The Brisk Website. Page Cargo Times Should Be Below2.5 Seconds.
Mobile Responsiveness
Another Important Ranking Factor Is Whether or Not or Not a Website Is Responsive, Which Suggests That the Layout of The Website Adapts to The Type of Device Being Used to View the Website. When An Online Point Is Responsive, It Delivers a Much Better Stoner Experience. Websites That Aren't Responsive Attempt to Deliver the Entire Range of a Web Page Meant for A Desktop onto A Smartphone or Tablet. To Make the Page Fit, The On-Page Content Must Be Reduced in Size, Which Generally Makes the Page-Viewable. All Other Effects Being Equal, Google Will Deliver a Mobile-Responsive Website Before an Anon-Responsive Point
Https
Google, Like Its Druggies, Prefers Secure Websites. An Online Point with Malware Is an Extreme Illustration of a Poor, Insecure Website. Of Course, Nothing Wants to Infect Their Computer by Visiting an Internet Point That Isn't Secure. Google Has Been Steadily Adding the Significance of Getting a Secure Website by Adding the Significance of HTTPS Websites Over HTTP Spots.
On-Page SEO Optimizing Visible Page Rudiments That Affect Rankings
Page Title And Meta Description
For Two Reasons, An Online Page’s Title Label and Meta Description Are Critical to SEO Rankings. First, Both Should Contain Your Primary Keyword(S) To Help Google to Understand the Semantic Meaning of Your Page. Rather Than Keyword Filling (Old-Academy SEO), Use A Variation of Your Keywords. It's A Best Practice to Use Antonyms and Word Variations and Alter the Order of Words Within a Keyword Expression. 909holdings best marketing agencies in the world Understands How to Best Optimize Title Markers and Meta Descriptions to Help Google Hunt Queries Rank and Ameliorate Organic Business.
Page Titles and Meta Descriptions Are Important Because They Present an Occasion to Separate Your Web Page Result from Your Challengers. Current SEO Best Practices Consider Newer Optimization Factors Employed by Google, Which Include Stoner Engagement Criteria Like Time on Point, Brio Rate, And Click-Through Rate. When Google Identifies That One Website Is Being Viewed for An Extended Period and There's Further Caller Engagement with The Website, The Page Will Out-Rank Pages with Lower Stoner Criteria. Accurate And Interesting Page Titles and Descriptions Help Increase Click-Through Rates and Reduce Brio Rates.
On-Page Content
The Content (Textbook) Of an Online Page Is Critical to The Implicit Ranking of That Page. As Mentioned Over, Google Is Tracking Caller Operation Criteria Like Time on Page and Brio Rate.
Eventually, The On-Page Content Must Give Value to The Caller. Simply Listing Services, For Illustration, Is Boring. When One Also Includes the Benefits or Value of Those Services to The Implicit Client, The Page Becomes More Applicable to The Caller. When The Page Is Terse, Has A Charming Layout, And Uses Rich Media (Vids, Plates, Etc.) That Ameliorate Caller Engagement, The Rankings Enhancement Has Lesser Abidance.
Off-Page SEO Perpetration of Optimization Rudiments Not Related to The Page Itself.
Off-Page SEO Ways Help Increase a Website’s Sphere Authority, Which Measures a Website’s Credibility And “Capability” To Rank Well. While On-Page SEO Positions an Online Point to Rank for Hunt Terms Well by Helping Search Engines Understand the Semantic Meaning of a Website and Its Web Pages, Off-Page SEO Helps Increase the Authority of An Online Point And Google’s Interpretation Of What Websites Should Rank Ahead Of Others.
Tumblr media
Social Media
The Use Of Social Media Helps To Produce Brand Mindfulness And Eventuality For Website Callers. The More an Online Point Participates in social media, The Lesser the Liability of Social Media Druggies Visiting the Online Point. Regarding Off-Page SEO, Google’s Precedence Is to Deliver Quality Content to Its Druggies. Among The Only Pointers of Quality Content, Is the Frequency with Which Content Participates Online. Social Media Marketing May Be a Superb Way to Encourage the Sharing of a Website’s Content.
Backlinks
At the Center of Google’s Ranking Algorithm Are Backlinks. To Google, Backlinks from One Website to A Special Bone Are Analogous to Word-Of-Mouth Referrals. The Further Referrals (Backlinks) An Online Point Receives, The Further Google Deems the Online Point as Applicable, Latterly, The Lesser a Website’s Rankings. Because Backlinks Are Critical to Sphere Authority and Ranking Well, It Tends to Be the Earth with The Topmost Abuse in Terms of Spam.

gonna start this one by just saying that this is only focusing on the first 3 games + 4 IAT, just so ya's know.
more thoughts on n brio but i definitely don't think n brio hates n gin bc he wants to be cortex's right hand man. it really doesn't make much sense especially considering that the flashback tapes indicate that he was plotting against cortex even before n gin was there.
this man now lives out of his hate and spite as a result of the way cortex treated him. his ire is purely directed at cortex and anything that obstructs it. unfortunately this means anyone that associates with cortex, regardless of intention, is going to be affected too.
by crash 4, this has gotten so detrimental that getting vengeance once in crash 2 just isn't enough any more.
he's so lost in this cycle that he's dug himself further into that he won't take into account that it'd probably be much more beneficial for him to get along with n gin or that maybe you probably shouldn't test out potentially deadly chemicals on people you consider to be your only friends.

Arghhh, I generally don’t like complaining about the show and I have been good with the way its been progressing this season. In the end, its a TV show and I can choose to not watch it if I am super unhappy with it. But last night’s episode made me sad/mad in a way that I cannot not say anything.
We all know that Beth is a curvy woman. They have never tried to hide that before and I don’t feel like it has ever been downplayed in any way by the way they have dressed her. But....BUT!!! Why in God’s green earth did they feel like they needed a body double with a perfectly flat stomach?????? Not only is it completely unrealistic, based on anyone looking at Beth’s body the last four seasons, but I am sure there has got to be at least one curvy body-double in all of Hollywood that they could have found.
The message this sends is quite troubling, in terms of the ideal body. So, as viewers, we are supposed to be dumb enough to believe that a mom of FOUR kids and a woman that has enormous breasts has a completely flat stomach???? It’s ridiculously unrealistic, and further perpetuates the “ideal” body, which is actually anything but ideal. For a show that is supposed to be all about female empowerment and positivity, they missed a huge chance to prove that.
I understand that it’s triggering to me, being a curvy mom myself. But this is not the bullshit body-image crap I want my daughter to see and think that she should strive for. Yuck, writers, you did us wrong. Please be better. For our sake and the sake of our daughters....

is there any significance to the duffel bag at the bank in 4x07 that rio and beth deliver being filled with costume jewelry or whatever that slip of paper says? that went over my head
Hi Anon! TY for the ask. ❤️ Such an angsty episode, too. My favorite.
Idk that the bag itself has any specific significance. The slip of paper was, I think, a pawn shop receipt showing that all the jewelry was paid for and there’s nothing illegal about what he’s doing. Maybe the fake jewelry was commentary on how fake Beth is being? That seems like a stretch though. If you’ve seen other analysis on this specific choice for Rio I would love to read it! But I think it was just Rio covering his tracks with the feds while clueing Beth in that he’s aware of the game she’s running.
To me, there’s this standoff with Brio up until that moment, where they both know, but they won’t say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really believe Rio knew she was responsible for a hit on him when he realized “Dave” wasn’t SS and that Beth sent him to execute someone she knew had Rio as his mark. And I think he suspected she was responsible for making him the mark. I also think Rio decided to heed “Dave’s” advice and try to be careful “with a woman like that.” It took this man 4 seasons to stop underestimating her ability to be cold blooded. I also think this is when he decided to change his approach.
Tumblr media
I view Rio as trying to work with Beth for the entirety of season 4. I don’t think he was ever going to give the cops that gun with her prints and I think he struggled a lot with the emotions of making the decision to resign himself to her. I have some discussion of it in this post. But everything he did leading up to asking her to choose him was him actively trying to show her he’s on her side and that they can work together. He made her The Banker. “He trusts you.” He told her he’ll show her how his operation is structured. He showed her not only his business, but also his family and how he mixes work and emotions constantly. He showed her his capacity for gentleness, for protectiveness, for offering her the things she likes and values. He tried to get her to see that he is like her. That he is human. He flirted with her, he acknowledged their connection out loud, he noticed when she dressed up for him, he appreciated her gestures even when she herself denied that they were gestures at all. He was so gd gentle with her that whole season! And I think it worked.
Beth’s incremental softening to him happened because of his choice to stop antagonizing her at every turn. He didn’t always get to see her thawing resolve, but I think he put his trust into it happening. For a while at least. He had no other choice. She had control and he had to work within her limits to get them to a point of honesty. 4.07 was a very honest episode. Rio actually used his words for once and asked for what he needed instead of making it a test of loyalties or some riddle. And despite her lies, Beth heard him.
My favorite line of this episode is when Rio so openly airs his hurt with, “I just thought that things were different now,” and Beth looks him over as he’s turned away and stutters out, “If Carolyn makes you feel…” It’s almost too intimate. Such an uncomfortable line both for her to say and us to hear. It’s this acknowledgment that she sees his feelings on him. That she’s aware she’s hurting him. These cracks in her denial and her little shows of the compassion and empathy and whatever else she feels for him that she’s been stuffing down are so engrossing to me. I love to watch her watch him hurt. Love to see the guilt bubbling up despite herself. The way she sits beside him with her hands up, almost bewildered. Not by the situation. I give her more credit than to underestimate him like this. She’s sitting in her discomfort at his candor. At his open choice of her and his brazen ask to be chosen back. Like, they don’t do that. Or he doesn’t, at least. He doesn’t ask her to save him. He doesn’t ask her to see him as a fellow human, one whom she cares about. They’ve sat in a car like this before and she asked him for help and to remember what she means to him. And he said no, that she was just work. And now they’re back in a different car, him asking her to remember what he means to her. Him asking her to pick him.
Tumblr media
The duffle bag was just another gesture. Another way for Rio to show her that despite her lies he still would choose her. Over and over. And over again.

yes hi i have a question - i agree with you. beth and rio should throw more things and hit more stuff. what is on your list of things they should destroy??? many thanks ma'am
x scary to know people are reading my tags!!
but thank you so much for your question!! this is such an important discussion and i’m honored to be entrusted with this!
Dean’s living room spa
i think the dream for me would be beth with a sledgehammer but she seems weirdly okay with him having tub time with his fake friends in it?? so maybe it’s more of a rio with a crow bar situation
either way i want dean to be in the tub when it happens
Nick 💜
ideally this would be a teamwork situation involving gardening tools being wielded as weapons
however i will accept almost any scenario involving his destruction as long as beth and rio are present and nick cries
the g wagon (i refuse to spell it correctly bc its a dumb car and it doesn’t deserve it)
i want beth to take a fucking crow bar to it (sorry it’s ugly)
to be clear, i want them to fuck in it first THEN destroy it
maybe beth can take her brick on the gas technique from season 2 and drive it off a cliff
or into a river 🤷🏻‍♀️
Nick 😎
i don’t think either of them could throw him bc he’s a lil bit thicc- maybe if they worked together?? - might need to be more of catapult situation
however, i think it could also be fun to put him in a dunk tank and everyone takes turns hitting the button
a picnic table
maybe they fuck on it first or maybe it happens while they’re fucking on it
idk maybe they’re having a picnic
i have destroyed one before (don’t ask) and it was fun so i think they’d have fun and i want them to have fun
Nick 💕
i want rio to assume matilda-like powers and just humiliate him like trunchbull (omg matilda au???)
i want rio to egg him and his crisp white shirt with rotten eggs until he and the eggs become one being
i want to personally throw a shoe at him during a councilman speech a la the bush shoeing incident
Additional things i want them to throw/destroy: a watermelon, a gingerbread house, a pie, a roasted turkey, maybe i just want them to have a food fight??

If Boomer is alive, why the 200+G's and more importantly, whose body does Rio have?
Duuuuuuuuude…… the most me. There are multiple scenarios playing in my mind but they’re not spelling out cute for Brio at all. Firstly, assuming that Rio has no clue that Boomer is alive (which I highly doubt), he’s not all that boss™. && the reason I say that he’s not in the dark about Boomer is because he’s been sending her body parts feigning that they’re Boomer’s, so he fkn well knows that the “body” he recovered is not Boomer’s, so whose is it??????? Did he even recover a body in the first place????
&& assuming that he does know, like why??? Why would he ask for an exorbitant amount of $$$ that leads the girls to drive the dealer to the ground?? For shits && giggles??? Or is it because like the great chess player && baller that he is in the game, he knew that Beth would clean out the dealer to wash the cash && that allows him to fill the dealer with his cars in order to flip his game && move pills???? Did he need the 200K to buy the merch && then push it around for ten-fold??? That whole spiel Beth gave him about numbers struck me because I’m sure he had no idea that Beth would go ham on him about numbers, which is hilarious because any parent hustling around more than one kid knows the power of accounting && making sure to get more bang for your buck. I’m convinced Beth is one of those parents that have extreme couponing binders. So, she knows the numbers Rio is counting on && I’m wondering if he just fooled them to flip his game.
He did give her that Boss Bitches Lesson 101™ way back in season one when he said that he’s always flipping his game && while others are happy pushing dime bags, he’s out here pushing bitches to do his dirty work. Not just any bitches, but suburban bitches that opened a whole new wooooooorld for him (yes, Aladdin style… old Aladdin not the new live action one lol). He’s a businessman && I do think that he does find Beth attractive && amusing && he may be having “feelings” but he’s not soft!rio! at all.
Either way, what a dick. I’m livid now lol. It just makes zero sense that he’d ask for money && then either admit that he ain’t shit or that he IS shit. lol. Do you get what I’m trying to say???? That’s kind of why I’m annoyed with these “twists” && “grand gestures” because every time they do one, I don’t know if the writers realize that they leave loose ends && this hellbent need to romanticize the ship is unhealthy. Why is Rio sending her body parts? We all assumed that he opened the bag && started cutting up Boomer && now we know that Boomer is living in his Nana’s attic. So, why do it?
Many of us have been discussing that Rio wants Beth && he’s catching feelings but there’s nothing romantic or healthy about his intentions at this point if we take into account your question && dilemma anon. Nothing. Rio only cares about his needs && has zero fucks for Beth’s. Granted she did ask to be a part of “it” but the “it” was the $$$ everything that came along with it I’m sure surprised them both. However, post-Boomer, Rio appears to be cornering Beth && manipulating her for his agenda && that’s fucked up but very boss like, too. I mean, he deadass has been sending her body parts to fuck with her && keep her && if that’s the case, Beth needs to drop the D && buy herself a wand. I don’t know but it just doesn’t do good for Rio to be romanticized when this thread is still out there && we have no answers.
