Why do we hate wasps so much?
We are all too familiar with the site of wasps disturbing people in pub gardens at the height of the summer or at a picnic site, foraging sweet foodstuffs. But did you know that earlier in the season wasps prefer to build themselves up on protein?
Often like so many other insects, if you look closely, you will find wasps scavenging carrion.  The attached image is a picture that I took whilst out yesterday, the image is both green bottle flies and wasps on a dead chick.
In fact without this particular facet of wasp behaviour, our gardens, farms and roads would be full of pest insects like aphids and caterpillars that cause major damage to our plants and roadkill would linger for much longer.
Wasps will hunt and eat a wide variety of insects including other smaller flying insects and their larvae and some wasps will even catch and eat small spiders, using their infamous sting to first paralyze their prey.
In the early part of the summer season, just like our beloved bees, wasps do in fact pollinate our plants and flower stock, so although they can be a very real nuisance to us, Wasps really do have their place in our natural world.

Green-bottles galore feeding alongside two female worker wasps on protein filled chick carcass, this time of the year worker wasps feed on protein to build themselves up to enable them the energy they need to carry out their associated duties as workers, going to and from the nest collecting materials and food for the grubs, before changing their feeding habits, as later on in the season their diet changes to sweeter foodstuffs in preference.
