Every fan interpretation of the Fifth is like “oh they’re the parents of the group and the Wise Old Elders” meanwhile they’re fully in their late thirties. Magnus is 38 and Abigail is 37 when we meet them in Gideon. If they died today they would’ve been born in the late ‘80s. Those aren’t grandparents. Those are millenials. They’re not even the oldest people at Canaan House (Colum may or may not be the same age as Magnus and Protesilaus is older than both of them), it’s just that they’re married and have stable jobs that aren’t Battle Butler and Death Wizard. They don’t use mid-twentieth-century British slang because they’re old, they use it because they’re from the Fifth and also because Abigail’s just Like That.

What does it mean to erase a people – a nation, culture, identity? In Gaza, we are beginning to find out
“Earlier this month, Gaza’s oldest mosque was destroyed by Israeli airstrikes. The Omari mosque was originally a fifth century Byzantine church, and was an iconic landmark of Gaza: 44,000 sq ft of history, architecture and cultural heritage. But it was also a live site of contemporary practice and worship. A 45-year-old Gazan told Reuters that he had been ‘praying there and playing around it all through my childhood‘. Israel, he said, is ‘trying to wipe out our memories’.
“St Porphyrius church, the oldest in Gaza, also dating back to the fifth century and believed to be the third oldest church in the world, was damaged in another strike in October. It was sheltering displaced people, among them members of the oldest Christian community in the world, one that dates back to the first century. So far, more than 100 heritage sites in Gaza have been damaged or levelled. Among them are a 2,000-year-old Roman cemetery and the Rafah Museum, which was dedicated to the region’s long and mixed religious and architectural heritage.
“As the past is being uprooted, the future is also being curtailed. The Islamic University of Gaza, the first higher education institution established in the Gaza Strip in 1978, and which trains, among others, Gaza’s doctors and engineers, has been destroyed, along with more than 200 schools. Sufian Tayeh, the rector of the university, was killed along with his family in an airstrike. He was the Unesco chair of physical, astrophysical and space sciences in Palestine. Other high-profile academics who have been killed include the microbiologist Dr Muhammad Eid Shabir, and the prominent poet and writer Dr Refaat Alareer, whose poem, If I must die, was widely shared after his death ...
“As the ability to tell these stories publicly comes under attack, so do the private rituals of mourning and memorialisation. According to a New York Times investigation, Israel ground forces are bulldozing cemeteries in their advance on the Gaza Strip, destroying at least six. Ahmed Masoud, a British Palestinian writer from Gaza, posted a picture of him visiting his father’s grave, alongside a video of its ruins. ‘This is the graveyard in Jabalia camp,’ he wrote, where his father was buried. ‘I went to visit him in May. The Israeli tanks have now destroyed it, and my dad’s grave has gone. I won’t be able to visit or talk to him again.’
“A memory gap is forming. Libraries and museums are being levelled, and what is lost in the documents that have burned joins a larger toll of record-keeping. Meanwhile, the scale of the killings is so large that entire extended families are disappearing. The result is like tearing pages out of a book. Dina Matar, a professor at Soas University of London, told the Financial Times that ‘such loss results in the erasure of shared memories and identities for those who survive. Remembering matters. These are important elements when you want to put together histories and stories of ordinary lives’ ...
“This is what it would look like, to erase a people. In short, to void the architecture of belonging that we all take so much for granted so that, no matter how many Gazans survive, there is, over time, less and less to bind them together into a valid whole. This is what it would look like, when you deprive them of telling their story, of producing their art, of sharing in music, song and poetry, and of a foundational history that lives in their landmarks, mosques, churches, and even in their graves.”

Fun fact: Soldier F has been named by Colum Eastwood under parliamentary privilege. Are they going to start censoring Hansard as well lmao? Less fun fact: it goes beyond hiding identities they’re trying to pass a bill that would stop the prosecution of British soldiers for war crimes committed during the Troubles
It really is incredible how British censorship makes the USA seem like it actually 100% lives up to the whole 'total commitment to free speech' thing by comparison. Just embarrassing and absurd.

The government's controversial Legacy Bill has passed after a vote in Westminster, despite widespread opposition in Northern Ireland.
A bid by the House of Lords to amend the bill was voted down by 288 to 205.
The bill ends new Troubles-era cases and inquests and offers conditional amnesty to those accused of killings.
The Irish government is considering legal action against the UK over the bill which the Democratic Unionist Party said was "abhorrent".
The bill will return to the Lords next week before going for royal assent.
It has been widely opposed by victims groups and all of Northern Ireland's political parties.
The government has said the legislation, which applies to all former members of the security forces and ex-paramilitaries, is an attempt to draw a line under the events of the past.
Prosecutions that are currently ongoing will continue to conclusion.
Veterans groups - such as the Northern Ireland Veterans Movement - widely support the bill.
However, some other military veterans have criticised it.
On Tuesday, the Lords backed an amendment to give victims' families a greater say in granting immunity from prosecution to offenders.
But the Conservative majority in the House of Commons rejected that on Wednesday, clearing the path for the legislation to be sent for royal assent.
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris told the House of Commons it was incumbent on the government to find a process that "can deliver positive outcomes for as many of those directly affected by the Troubles as possible".
"We must be honest about what we can realistically deliver for people in circumstances where the prospects of achieving justice in the traditional sense are so vanishingly small," he added.
What has the reaction been?
Taoiseach (Irish prime minster) Leo Varadkar said it was "the wrong way to go about dealing with legacy issues in Northern Ireland".
"There aren't many things that all of the five main parties in Northern Ireland agree on but they all agreed this is wrong, and this is not victim-centred and not human-rights proofed," Mr Varadkar told reporters in County Wicklow.
He said the Irish attorney general is preparing advice on whether the case could be taken to the European Court of Human Rights, "essentially saying that this bill, this act is not compliant with the European Convention on Human Rights, of which United Kingdom is a signatory".
'Exceptionally cruel'
DUP assembly member Emma Little-Pengelly said the "abhorrent" passage of the bill represents a "dark day for innocent victims of the Troubles".
Ms Little-Pengelly said the bill "plays into the hands of those who want to airbrush the past".
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said he was "angry and ashamed" at the outcome of the vote and called on the Irish government to intervene.
"The British Government doesn't care about the rights of victims but the international human rights standards that we all enjoy must be defended," he said.
Speaking before the debate, Sinn Féin MP John Finucane described the bill as devastating for families, adding it would unilaterally close the door on them getting truth and justice.
Mr Finucane's father, solicitor Pat Finucane, was shot dead by loyalist gunmen at his home in Belfast in 1989.
"When we had the New Decade, New Approach political agreement, the British government made a promise, a commitment, in that agreement that they would legislate for Stormont House within 100 days," he said.
"One hundred days later, they made a very public and dramatic U-turn without any consultation.
"The British government have refused to listen and refused to act, and instead they plough ahead with a piece of legislation which is exceptionally cruel."
People Before Profit assembly member Gerry Carroll said communities "must rally in opposition" to the bill.
"Truth and justice are rights that have never truly been afforded to victims here," he said. "Campaigners have vowed not to give up in their pursuit of justice and will not stop opposing this rotten legislation."
How do victims' families feel?
Grainne Teggart, of Amnesty International UK, said it was a "dark day for justice" and that the law only absolves "those responsible for conflict-related abuses - and, shamefully, all under the guise of reconciliation".
Victims' rights campaigner Raymond McCord, whose son Raymond Jnr was murdered by loyalists in 1997, said the UK government had shown no compassion for victims.
"My next step is taking the government to court, [they] simply don't care about truth and justice," he said.
Kenny Donaldson, from victims' organisation South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF), said the government had "effectively relinquished their responsibilities in overseeing justice".
"It is regrettable that they were not willing to accept the very reasonable amendment which came from the House of Lords yesterday which would have ensured that victims and survivors could feel somewhat empowered."
'A terrible injustice'
The family of a man who was shot and killed by a soldier in Londonderry on 15 September 1971 earlier labelled the legacy bill "a disgrace".
William McGreanery was shot in the Bogside area of Derry by a member of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.
His nephew, Billy McGreanery, who was just 13 when his uncle was killed, said he feared the bill could rob many families of justice.
Their own family's case is currently with the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).
"I think a terrible injustice has been done to every family in this country," Mr McGreanery told BBC Radio Foyle.
"On the worldwide stage it's a disgrace that they are treating people this way and if this was any other part of the UK, I don't think they would get away with this."
The topic of dealing with the past has been a contentious political issue for a long time in Northern Ireland.
More than 1,000 killings from the Troubles have never been solved.
It has been brought into the main news headlines in recent years as a soldier has been in court charged with murdering two people in 1972.
The man, known only as Soldier F, is accused of killing the men during what became known as Bloody Sunday, when the Army's Parachute Regiment opened fire on a civil rights march in Derry.

hi to explain
the telegraph is a british newspaper that is politically biased with the tory party - lando started writing an f1 colum with them this year (its behind a paywall obviously which is probably why u haven’t seen it try reddit or maybe someone on here has some of them)
alot of uk people were really disappointed in him supporting a newspaper like this given their political standpoints
I hate that my first thought was "Does Lando know that"? 😅
As someone who's been traumatized after the Egyptian revolution and the Rab'a massacre, I wouldn't know anything in politics. I probably wouldn't have seen it anyways even if it was for free, but is it a fun column?!
Does he support the newspaper tho? And if he does, so what? Like, these dudes are rich cunts, they're not perfect nor should we expect them to be. The issue really happens when some of them *cough* George and Lewis *cough* pretend to be perfect and their fans pretend that they're god's latest revelation. Then we have an issue...
I watch for the sport, the driving, the adrenaline and the nerves before the race, the joy on tumblr after a win, the friends we make along the way, and the hot sexy drivers. If anyone watches to prove some point of being woke or better than other fans, that's just sad. That's teamlh sort of life, they truly think they're doing the planet a service by supporting lewis hamilton who's harming the planet more than most random people like you and me😂. So I'd suggest that no one becomes like that and pretends that these drivers are anything but just young sexy millionaires that drive super fast cars and date models.

Against Drowning and in War A native of the Island of Coll, who served in the British army from the taking of Copenhagen, throughout the Peninsular and continental wars, and only died this year (1874), a most kind-hearted and powerfully built man, attributed his safe return from the wars in some measure to having learned this charm in his youth: The charm Mary put round her son, And Bridget put in her banners, And Michael put in his shield, And the Son of God before His throne of clouds: A charm art thou against arrow, A charm art thou against sword, A charm against the red-tracked bullet; An island art thou in the sea, A rock art thou on land; And greater be the fear these have Of the body, round which the charm goes, In presence of Colum-Kil With his mantle round thee.

Literary References: Abbey Theatre
The Following is the first entry in ‘Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory’ (Penguin Reference). I thought I’d add entries here to force myself to study them, and hopefully to share them with whoever may be interested.
I find the format of this particular entry confusing, but I’m not quite sure how to better share it.
Entry:
‘Abbey TheatreThe most famous of Irish theatres and one of the most famous in the British Isles, if not in Europe. It was the centre of the Irish dramatic movement founded in 1899 by W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. The aim of the movement was to present Irish plays on Irish subjects performed by Irish actors. The building itself was the result of a conversion of the old theatre of the Mechanics’ Institute in Abbey Street and the old city morgue next to it. Its creation was made possible through the munifcence (and tea) of Annie Horniman (1860-1937), who was later the pioneer of the Manchester School (q.v..). It was opened in 1904 and in the Irish dramatists of any note. Apart from Annie Horniman, the main moving spirits of the Abbey were W.B. Yeats, J.M. Synge and Lady Gregory, plus the Fay brothers. The first plays presented were On Baile’s Strand and Cathleen ni Houliban by  Yets and Spreading the News by Lady Gregory. Later came Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World (1907), which caused riots because Irish morality was offended by a reference in the text to a woman’s shift (i.e. a chemise). The fortunes of the theatre declined somewhat with the removal of Annie Horniman’s financial support. Synge died in 1909 and Yeats resigned as a result of a dispute with Lady Gregory, who was to continue until she retired in 1928. Among distinguished Irish playwrights to have their plays produced at the Abbey in its earlier years were Padraic Colum (1881-1972), St John Greer Ervine (1883-197) and Lennox Robinson (1886-1958), who was manager of the Abbey from 1910 to 1923 (apart from a short break), in which year he became director. After the First World War there were more financial troubles, which were partly relieved by three famous plays by Sean O’Casey (1880-1964): namely, Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924) and The Plough and the Stars (1926). In 1925 the Abbey received a government grant and became the first state-subsidized theatre in the English-speaking world. After O’Casey’s departure for England (the Abbey rejected The Silver Tassie in 1928 and O’Casey was deeply offended) the theatre was sustained by a number of fine plays by George Shiels (1886-1949). There was also emphasis on plays in Gaelic. The theatre burned down in 1951; a new one opened in 1966.’
Despite how incredibly information-dense this excerpt was, I found it quite interesting as a foreigner living in Ireland. I love theatre and found plenty of plays to read in this entry now have some background on well-known names in Irish history like Yeats and Lady Gregory, so that's enjoyable. However, I had not heard of the Abbey Theatre before this, and the book does not give examples of literary references to it so I am not sure how this will improve my understanding of future texts, but I guess only time will tell.

Fic: "A Better Offer"
A fresh fic and a few changes, Randallites! I’m now slowly posting my works to AO3, starting with a brand new story that kicks off the entire “Dispatches from Fort Laggan” universe. But my works on there are archive-locked; I'm also not terribly happy with the formatting options for pre and post fic notes. So I will continue to share the Google Drive versions here for folks who prefer to read that way.
This may also be the only completely safe-for-work story I ever write. It’s a lot of worldbuilding with some medium spicy backstory on Black Jack and Jamie’s relationship as well as what they’ve been doing since taking a hard left turn from canon after the sequence where Claire gets interrogated at Fort William in S1E8, and some exposition on Mary’s background and recent character development.
Read "A Better Offer" now on Drive or AO3 per your pleasure!
Quick summary for the good of the order:
In the fall of 1745, Black Jack Randall accepts a little help and a lot of snark from Jamie Fraser while he unloads and sorts the last of his and Alex's things from their family's estate in Sussex. Black Jack is now commanding a new garrison northwest of Laggan with the goal of preventing further violence between the British Army and Jacobite Scots. So far, so good thanks to a lot of teeth-clenched teamwork and considerable help from Colum MacKenzie. He has a much more pleasant job that doesn't fuel his own self-hatred nearly as much; his abuser is long dead thanks to a bit of sprightly decapitation; and he gets to lick Jamie's scars pretty much any time he wants.
Life has been reasonably good for Black Jack the past couple of years, but has also become more complicated in recent months. He's now living just outside of Melgarve with his younger brother Alex and his lady love Mary Hawkins, growing closer to Mary as her partner's health continues to decline and they care for him together. As he reflects on the past with cautious hope, he looks toward an uncertain future with growing apprehension—and an embarrassment of powdered wigs that he's having the devil of a time keeping his cat Benedick from stealing.
As with all my fic, no rape whatsoever in the action. There are a couple of brief references to both Mary and Black Jack himself surviving sexual violence in the past—one of several dynamics that makes them oddly well suited for each other later on. There is also some general exposition on early installment weirdness between Black Jack and Jamie—the events described in S1E2 and S1E6.
Nonstandard Dr. Compliance content warnings and disclaimers apply:
This story is very cerebral, but not very explicit. You will get a deep dive on World War II history and plenty of other goodies to set up the much more erotic future installments within this universe.
That said, please still consider yourself carefully before reading. Writing erotica is thinking on our own trauma recovery and sexual liberation, after all! For full description and content warnings, hop to the front matter in Drive or AO3. An upshot of my usual copious generosity with the written word is that you won’t accidentally get into reading the story itself if you realize from the metadata that you’d rather not venture further.
And if you do venture further, please feel free to leave feedback here! Finally, to all my fellow survivors daring to envision people who harmed us actually doing the work to make meaningful amends: I see you; you are valid; and you are verra welcome here.
