i have been talking about this with @broadlybrazen a LOT lately and finally wanted to consolidate my thoughts here on tumblr, but there's an aspect of homophobia represented in our flag means death that i think a lot of people miss, and that might be because it's not the sort that people usually encounter, but like -
the entirety of izzy's plan to have stede killed by the british navy is motivated by homophobia. the entirety of his motive is grounded within homophobia. that izzy is likely to be a repressed gay man does not change the fact that his entire motive for sicking the english on stede is grounded in homophobia.
when chauncey badminton rolls into spanish jackie's bar and asks their motives, jackie is pissed about her nose jar and her favorite husband being killed. izzy's motivation is explicitly "he's done something to my boss's brain". izzy's entire motivation for having stede killed is explicitly because he thinks that ed adoring stede, having affection for stede, having a romantic and sexual (because he thinks they've already consummated!) bond with stede, has literally damaged him as a person and damaged his brain.
i have seen a lot of discussion about how izzy is trying to save ed, and none of it acknowledges that what izzy is doing is straight out of the homophobic evangelical playlist of "i love you and you cannot be like this (gay, queer, feminine, soft), this is not who you are, you are being corrupted, for your own good i will isolate and harass and hound you and i will seek to destroy these corrupting influences so you can go back to being the person i knew".
our flag means death is very earnestly talking about toxic masculinity, about what it means to be a man, about what it means to exist in a world where you have been abused for being your true self (stede), what it means to exist in a world where you have never felt safe to be your true self (ed), what it means to exist in a world where you feel torn between your peace and your familial responsibilities (jim), what it looks like when you're a man who has embraced himself (lucius), what it means to be a man who chooses compassion and understanding (oluwande), and in all the ways it represents men and especially queer men, it digs deep into homophobia.
yes, it does this while being a comedy. yes, it does this without being a trauma porno. but also, yes, it is talking about what it means to have experienced trauma, and what it means to cause trauma, and izzy hands' plan to have stede killed and ed pried away from stede, his plea for ed to see stede being gunned down by a firing squad as a humane death, all of this is about homophobia. it is about the fact that izzy thinks stede is a thing that should be killed, and that ed, in choosing to emulate him, in choosing to be open and soft and vulnerable and gay without violence, has become a *thing* too.
it is about the fact that people can care about you, because i truly think izzy cares about ed, and because of that care they will do horrific things to you and the people you care about, because their regard is a controlling, possessive thing, that feels entitled to dictate the truth of your existence.
there is nothing benevolent, nothing compassionate, nothing loving in what izzy does, but he sees it that way because he genuinely and truly believes that stede is ruining ed because he is corrupting and changing him for the worst, and that is classic homophobia, izzy's just doing it in a repressed gay hat.

the lofthouse (and knock-off) cookies aren't really a "treat" tbh - like I told @broadlybrazen, they're more an occasional and masochistic craving for when I just somehow want sugar and dense dryness

broadlybrazen replied to your post “I need to find that post about how the issue with recipe blogs having...”
isn’t the long text included so that the post has a better chance of showing up in google search rankings?
I remember someone brought this up on that original post and here’s the thing: that’s both 100% correct and misses the point completely. The issue I have anyway isn’t huge blocks of texts, it’s huge blocks of badly written text. Write all you want if it’s engaging; if I’m in a rush I’ll scroll down to the recipe but there’s a decent chance I’ll go back and read it while I eat the food.
Also, while I’m completely uneducated in the intricacies of SEO I have to assume that having a dedicated repeat readership is part of the goal when it comes to selling and making money of ads, not just initial hits, and if you’re a good writer I might look at recipes I don’t otherwise care about or bookmark you as a blog to follow, vs. if you wrote some rambly nonsense I might click now, but I’m not going to stick around unless your recipe is truly exceptional and not something I could have just as easily found elsewhere. You get new hits but not repeats, at least out of me.
This is also assuming the goal is to get hits and not to be all new-agey but I’m very pro the idea of not feeling obligated to monetize your hobbies - I always felt that pressure when I was younger and it made me drop a whole lot of things I loved for years until I realized “oh I can just do this and make gifts for my friends and not feel like I’m squandering my time by not also creating an Etsy store or whatever.” Obviously the reality is many people do use this as an additional source of income, and hits and likes and comments are nice, but I don’t think we can assume that’s universally true of all people with recipe blogs.
Also I do genuinely mean that whenever someone is like “my husband hates so much of what I cook :)” it’s like well I’m glad you have an outlet to vent but I really hope you have IRL friends to vent to as well and that your ad money is going to pay for couples therapy.

you've made me cry about RMS Carpathia at least a dozen times - I read your telling of her Titanic rescue every time it crosses my dash - but I only just came across your post about her ending. "The date is July 17th, 1918, and RMS Carpathia has pulled off her last miracle." I'M CRYING SO HARD BUT ALSO I FEEL FRAGILE AND HOPEFUL
I AM BOTH DELIGHTED AND deeply sorry, I did not anticipate making so many people so emotional about a steamship from the 1900s but here we all are, crying about her together

broadlybrazen replied to your photoset: CILANTRO LIME SALMON Pre-heat oven to 375 F. In a...
that salmon looks great but when I cook it that long it ends up VASTLY overdone o_O what are we doing differently
To be fair, I was cooking a substantial piece of salmon, and the cilantro lime sauce keeps the moisture pretty retained.
If I were cooking just a regular piece of salmon, the cooking time would have been vastly reduced. I also usually cook salmon on the middle rack of my oven and in a covered dish (i.e., I stick aluminum foil over the top of a pan) to keep it from drying out before the middle reaches the appropriate temperature.

what is your most favorite extant predator? most favorite extinct predator? (also, happy wintermas!)
We talking obligate predator or ‘animal that eats other animals’ because it forever fucks me up that Fox Squirrels eat birds? Considering the actual definition of the word:
Tie between the Virginia Opossum and Coyote for extant, probably Haast’s Eagle for the extinct, because I love how deeply intertwined verbal history can be with paleontology.
Now if you mean order Carnivora I’ll say whatever the extinct fossa that was the size of a cougar for my extinct category, because she’s a trans icon.
I’m drunk, send asks with either questions, or thr secret code phrase that will activate the murderous will implanted in me upon my extreme youth.

...I can’t tell if this is a joke or sincerely meant because I’ve known too many evangelicals who would say this sincerely
Poe’s Law in action, right?
But I’m betting it’s genuine; I’ve gotten routine harassment by missionaries for being Online While Jewish and “Christianity Bashing”.

Ha you're a 51% majority and this would actually write a serious wrong, since Book Paul is described as having deep brown skin and straight ink-black hair.
*head in hands* of course he was
broadlybrazen replied to your post “Dev Patel can, must and should play Paul Atreides”
I might actually care about Dune if Dev played Paul & would also enjoy the decade-long freakout from the rabid fanboys
I know right???
