WRESTLING ALL STARS: Heroes and Villains : JUNE 1996
ECW CONQUERS NEW YORK
By George Napolitano
[Sabu clobbers Cactus Jack in some EXTREME action.]
Like an off Broadway play that perfects its craft on the road before making it to the big city. ECW has been playing to full houses for nearly three years approximately every three weeks in Philadelphia, PA at the ECW Arena. Finally, after all this time “on the road,” ECW decided to try its luck in the Big Apple. And, from the response that they received in their New York debut, it’s obvious that ECW is ready to take an extreme bite out of the Big Apple!
[Sandman before he lost his Woman and his gold]
The Lost Battalion Hall in Queens, NY, was the sight of the first ECW card in the New York area. Prior To the card ECW action had been playing on MSG cable every Sunday night at 1:00 a.m. for nearly a year. ECW has its own unique brand of mayhem and violence, unlike anything that can be seen on WWF or WCW broadcasts. In NYC, it has acquired a huge late-night cult following. Although Tod Gordon and the rest of the ECW hierarchy knew that they had a following in the New York area, never in their wildest dreams did they think that their first card would produce a complete sell out with hundreds of die-hard fans turned away at the door.
[Sabu sends Cactus through a table.]
At 7:00 p.m., with still an hour to go before the show, there were 1,242 fans inside the arena with an estimated 1,000 more on Queens Boulevard unable to get inside. TO try and pacify those who were unable to secure admission to the event, the ECW announced the date of their next card and then began to sell tickets to this one. Many fans who were unable to get into the arena for the first ECW card quickly purchased seats for the upcoming show to avoid being shut out again! And, because of this huge advance ticket sale and the response of those who were fortunate to gain admission to the first ECW card, the second ECW card in Queens is sure to be another sellout.
[ECW crowds are the rowdiest wrestling crowds in the world.
Raven is dazed and confused after smashing a table with his head.]
I have been to numerous local events in my many years covering the wrestling scene, but not since the heydays of the eighties have I seen such a rabid group of fans in a local arena.
Walking through the crowd, you could feel the electricity. The excitement was such that it made you feel that you were about came to ringside. After aggravating the crowd with his obnoxious behavior, Richards walked to the ringside and said, “Hey Jojo, there’s Missy Hyatt!” Richards played up to Missy, and before leaving the ringside area Missy gave him a long, deep kiss. When their lips parted, Missy told Stevie to take that to Raven.  After Richards finally returned to the dressing room, Joey Styles introduced Paul E. Dangerously. Dangerously received a long and loud ovation from the faithful and then welcomed every one in his own inimitable style. Dangerously had quite a few things to say to the people and peppered his comments with profanties directed mainly towards WCW and the WWF. In closing Dangerously said, “There’s going to be so much electricity in here that they will feel its effects all the way in Titan Towers in Stanford, Connecticut!”
[Francine tends to an injured Pit Bull.
Paul E. Dangerously gets the Queens NY crowd worked up.
Raven is never too injured to give the Sandman a kick to the kisser!]
Finally, the time had come for the big card and in the first match Taz took on Koji Nakagawa. The “Master of the Suplex '' wasted no time in easily subduing his opponent, and when it was over, Taz, along with his manager Bill Alphonso, challenged everyone in the arena.
[Rock tables NuJack and the Gangstas are history!
Nujack pounds Rocco Rock bloody.]
Next came “The Shah” Hack Myers and his opponent was J.T. Smith Listening to the wat that the fans were cheering on the Shah, it was obvious that they had been following ECW action for a long time. After eight minutes of action, Meyers pinned Smith to win the match.
[Francine attacks Paul E. Dangerously at ringside.
Pit Bull #1 brains Eliminator #1 with a board! The Sandman is on the receiving end of several Raven rights. There were 1,242 fans inside the arena with an estimated 1,000 more on Queens Boulevard unable to get inside.]
This was followed by a match in which Too Cold Scorpio put both the tag team title and the TV title on the line. His opponent was Long Island native, Mikey Whipwreck.
[Bubba Dudley doesn’t stutter when he’s kicking butt! ECW, ECW, ECW!]
This match was sensational. Scorpio and Whipwreck put on a display of wrestling prowess that has been seen in a local arena in years. The moves exhibited by both men were just incredible. Scorpio's numerous cartwheels off the top rope were simply breathtaking with each executed with precision. However , if Scorpio had merely tried to pin Whipwreck instead of continually showing off and lifting him off the mat at the count of two so that he could do yet another cartwheel, he would have easily won the match. But Scorpio’s showboating proved to be his undoing. Cactus Jack ran in and pulled Whipwreck out of the way as Scorpio was about to land on him once again. With Scorpio rolling on the mat writhing in pain from the missed cartwheel, Cactus jack placed Whipwreck on top of the Scorpio. The referee then counted and, as he pounded the canvas a third time, Mikey Whipwreck was declared the winner and new TV and Tag Team champion!
[Buh-Buh Dudley dies his dance,]
A tag team match followed, involving the Eliminators (with their manager Jason) versus the Pit Bulls (with their valet Francine). This was another fast and furious encounter. Both teams battled continually both inside and outside of the ring with even Jason and Francine getting into it numerous times. The end came when Saturn pinned Pit Bull 2 with help from his partner in crime. After scoring the pin fall, the Eliminators, along with Jason, suplexed Francine as her large, mostly male, rooting section gasped in horror!
[Taz and Bill Alphonzo: A match made in Hell!]
The fifth match was an elimination match with the winner getting the opportunity to wrestle for the ECW title against the Sandman. The participants were Raven and Tommy Dreamer. While Raven had Stevie Richards, the Blue Meanie and Beullah in his corner, Tommy Dreamer had to wage the war alone and this led to his downfall. This battle was one of the wildest matches ever waged in New York! The combatants fought all around the arena, but when it was over Raven emerged victorious.
In the sixth match Buster Mastino easily defeated El Puertoricano despite several sensational moves by the young Puerto Richan.
[Taz and Bill Alphonzo: Can these two get any more irritating?]
The sensational Bubba Ray Dudeley was next and Buh, Buh, Buh, Bubba’s opponent was the Blue Meanie.
[Stevie Richards, Beulah McGillicuddy and The Blue Meanie seem to be having a marvelous time.]
Accompanying Bubba were the rest of the Dudley clan, while the Meanie had Stevie Richards at ringside in case he needed a helping hand. After the Meanie slapped Bubba to start the match. It went downhill for the Meanie. Bubba Ray tore the Meanie apart. Then after disposing of the Meanie, the Dudleys set their sights on Richards, and he was lucky to leave the arena alive as the Dudleys tore into him.
[Woman gives Sandman a quaff of lager!]
The ECW title match was next with the Sandman taking on Raven. As soon as the Sandman made his way to the ring accompanied by the lovely Woman, everyone in the arena rose to their feet. After seeing the Sandman successfully defend his title on TV time after time against a variety of opponents, the sellout crowd couldn’t wait to see their hero in person and they showed him and his lady their appreciation by giving them a long and loud standing ovation. You could tell by the smiles on their faces and the cockiness in their strut that the Sandman and Woman loved the ovation. When Raven appeared in view, his reception was met with a long and loud chorus of boos. The battle between these two was intense. At times it looked like Raven would win the title, but some how, some way, the Sandman always managed to survive. At the 15-minute mark Tommy Dreamer ran to the ring and joined the battle. Dreamer was slugging Raven who got the worst of it. When Dreamer finally left the ringside area, Sandman pinned Raven to win the bout.
[Cactus grabs a handful of Sabu’s hair. (Notice that lately Cactus has been wrestling with his teeth in.)
Too Cold Scorpio goes for an altitude record.]
This was followed by a tag team match involving Public Enemy and the Gangstas. The battle that ensued was intense. Chairs, tables, the bell and anything else they could grab was used during the match. To accurately describe the intensity exhibited by each time would be impossible as the match was brutal. In the end, Mustafa of the Gangstas pulled off the upset of the evening when he pinned Rocco Rock to win the match.
[Public Enemy says, “You should see the LOSERS!”
Cactus Jack and Mikey Whipwreck are championship tag team partners, much to Mikey’s dismay.]
The final match of the night pitted the feared Sabu against the wild and crazy Cactus Jack, and the referee for this battle was 911. Like all of the matches that preceded it, this was yet another classic. Sabu did all of his trademarked moves, while Cactus Jack was as wild as could be. Although the match ended in a double count out, no one was disappointed as both men used every move in their repertoire.
The first NECW New York card started at 8:00 p.m. and it continued non-stop without an intermission until 11:45. In this time, everyone was treated to a night of action, excitement and mayhem unlike any they had ever seen on the local scene. With the enthusiastic response of the first ECW card in the New York area, it is only a matter of time before ECW becomes a major force on the NY scene. Although right now the ECW stars may lack the fame of the WWF or WCW, with their moves, style, and never-say-die attitude, it's only a matter of time before the ECW competitors become as well known as their counterparts. When they do, ECW will become a major force on the wrestling scene. From their humble beginnings in Philadelphia, PA, in front of a small, hardcore enthusiastic audience the ECW has grown to the point where it is now ready to compete with the big boys. From the reception in the Big Apple, it’s obvious that ECW is ready to step into the limelight.
[Missy Hyatt and Stevie Richards hit it off at ringside. Is she using  Stevie to get to Raven?
Raven locks Sandman with the caning stick.
Tommy Dreamer is a bloody mess as he reacts to a low blow.]

I’m bored at work again and I found more cyberpunk headcanons and ideas. So here’s some on Bendy for ya! ❤️
- (idk if I already shared this one) Bendy really likes listening to old music (1970-current). He also really likes more obscure bands that nobody knows about. Aside from that he loves punk rock, grunge, electro swing, and a few popular broadway songs. Especially any cool dance numbers.
- Bendy loves to dance. But because this isn’t the 1920s he does other dance styles aside from ballroom dancing and swing. He likes jazz, swing, and especially hip hop. I haven’t done hip hop dance in a LOOONNGG time and we never went over the different types so I had to look it up. Sorry if it’s inaccurate or something. But he’d do variations on a couple of different styles. Especially with breaking, turfing, footwork, jazz-funk, and boogaloo (I cant tell the difference between regular and electric boogaloo). And you bet your butt he knows a couple Gangsta Walking moves XD. (If you don’t know what these are and want to know I’d recommend looking it up. I watched some videos on youtube to try to get the vibe. Not extensive research but I hope enough to get the idea.)
- Bendy also has a cybernetic eye. Like Cup. He had it replaced after an incident with a street gang as a kid, but got a really crappy one that broke a lot but it looked like his old eye. He had to learn how to fix it a lot of the time. That sparked an interest in (not only mechanics) but specifically with cyberware. (Kidna ironic he’s a demon finding an interest in a field that his race is known for. I legit just realized the irony as I’m writing this XD)
- After the labyrinth, and the fight with the Night Terror, his old eye got completely wrecked. Hat and Flug set him up with the one you see now in his character designs. It has a black sclera and red iris (Hat’s idea, not Bendy’s). But it works a thousand times better than his old one so he doesn’t mind.
- Bendy and Flug sometimes gush a bit over tech and compare designs, but Bendy doesn’t fully trust Flug because of what happened with the demon blood experiment.
- Bendy, Boris, and Holly, on top of their scrap repurposing business, started to make and sell little gadgets for everyday use and self defense and things that can be used in or pass off as accessories. Especially helping to thief proof everyday items like wallets and purses. (Tracker systems, alarm riggings, or ways to hide it well for easy use but still out of the reach of sticky fingers) that kind of thing.

No, Garland and Rooney did blackface when they performed the song in their movie. But they were just reprising it 15 years after it came out in a Broadway musical. The original song was written by black people and performed by black people. So the song itself CANNOT be “racist”,- because it is an altogether black creation and black performance. Garland and Rooney were racist as fuck for wearing blackface, but that doesnt change the fact the song itself, including its title, was written by black people. So how could the song/expression be racist against the very people that made it?? That’s like saying if some asshole performs Gangsta’s Paradise tomorrow in blackface the expression “gangsta paradise” is racist when in fact it’s a black man’s brainchild.
So they don’t know or didn’t know the real story behind the song?
RIP Coolio, btw.

Ron O'Neal (September 1, 1937 – January 14, 2004) was an actor, director, and screenwriter, who rose to fame in his role as Youngblood Priest, a New York cocaine dealer, in the film Super Fly (1972) and its sequel Super Fly T.N.T.(1973). He was a director and writer for the sequel, and the film Up Against the Wall. He graduated from Glenville High School and attended Ohio State University, where he became interested in acting after seeing the play Finian's Rainbow. He joined the Karamu House company in Cleveland, working with the oldest African-American theatre company in the US from 1957 until 1964, during which period he appeared in plays such as Kiss Me, Kate, A Streetcar Named Desire, and A Raisin in the Sun while working as a housepainter to earn his living. In 1964, he went to New York, teaching acting classes at the Harlem Youth Arts Program and appearing in Off-Broadway plays. During those years, film roles that went beyond stock characters were few and far between, notable exceptions being his roles in Brothers (1977), Brave New World (1980), and The Sophisticated Gents (1981). He had several television guest appearances, frequently playing detective roles. In 1988, He had a recurring role as Mercer Gilbert on A Different World, playing the wealthy father of the spoiled southern belle Whitley Gilbert. He appeared in Original Gangstas. He was first married to actress Carol Tillery Banks, from November 1973 until 1980 (divorced), and then to Audrey Pool, from 1993 until his death. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch9mPcXun0MoO0cXXIGgaKgh7Tmsurn7DnaBIM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ving Rhames
Tumblr media
Irving Rameses Rhames (born May 12, 1959) is an American stage and screen actor. He is best known for his starring role as Luther Stickell in the Mission: Impossible film series and his supporting role as gang kingpin Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction. He also appeared in Jacob's Ladder (1990), Dave (1993), Striptease (1996), Don King: Only in America (1997), Rosewood (1997), Con Air (1997), Bringing Out the Dead (1999), Baby Boy (2001), Dawn of the Dead (2004), Day of the Dead (2008), Piranha 3D (2010), and Father Figures (2017). He voiced Cobra Bubbles in the animated film Lilo & Stitch (2002). Rhames is a Golden Globe Award winner, as well as an Emmy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award nominee.
Early life and education
Rhames was born on May 12, 1959 in Harlem, New York City, the son of Reather, a homemaker, and Ernest Rhames, an auto mechanic. His parents were raised as sharecroppers in South Carolina. He was named after NBC journalist Irving R. Levine.
He entered New York's High School of Performing Arts, where he discovered his love of acting. After high school, he studied drama at SUNY Purchase, where fellow acting student Stanley Tucci gave him his nickname "Ving". Rhames later transferred to the Juilliard School's Drama Division (Group 12: 1979–1983) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1983.
Career
Rhames first appeared on Broadway in the play The Boys of Winter in 1984. He started out in film in Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs (1991) as Leroy, he watched over Kevin Kline as Secret Service agent Duane Stevensen in Dave (1993), and he played Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction (1994). He also played the buddy of George Clooney in “Out of Sight” (1998).
Rhames played Dr. Peter Benton's brother-in-law on the TV medical drama ER, a recurring role he filled for three seasons. He played ace computer hacker Luther Stickell opposite Tom Cruise in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible (1996). In 1997 Rhames portrayed the character of Nathan 'Diamond Dog' Jones in the popular film Con Air. and Muki in the Ice Cube film Dangerous Ground.
Rhames won a Golden Globe in 1998 for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film in HBO's Don King: Only in America. At the ceremony he gave his award to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon, saying, "I feel that being an artist is about giving, and I'd like to give this to you." Lemmon was clearly touched by the gesture as was the celebrity audience who gave Lemmon a standing ovation. Lemmon, who tried unsuccessfully to give the award back to Rhames, said it was "one of the nicest, sweetest moments I've ever known in my life." The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced later that they would have a duplicate award prepared for Rhames. That moment was #98 on E!'s 101 Awesome Moments in Entertainment. The New York Times lauded Rhames for the act, writing that in doing so he "demonstrated his capacity for abundant generosity."
Rhames appeared in Striptease (1996) as the wisecracking bodyguard Shad, Bringing Out the Dead (1999), then reprised his Luther Stickell role for Mission: Impossible 2 (2000). He played Johnnie Cochran in American Tragedy (2000), the ex-con boyfriend of Jodie's mother in the John Singleton film Baby Boy, portrayed a gay drag queen in the television movie Holiday Heart, contributed his voice for the character of Cobra Bubbles in Lilo & Stitch (2002) and the subsequent TV series, and played a stoic cop fighting zombie hordes in Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Day of the Dead (2008) remakes. Rhames has also appeared in a series of television commercials for RadioShack, usually performing with Vanessa L. Williams.
In March 2005, Rhames played the lead role on a new Kojak series, on the USA Network cable channel (and on ITV4 in the UK). The bald head, lollipops, and "Who loves ya, baby?" catchphrase remained intact, but little else remained from the Savalas original.
Rhames voiced the part of Tobias Jones in the computer game Driver 3.
Reprising his Luther role, Rhames co-starred in Mission: Impossible III (2006), had a cameo appearance in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), and played a major role in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), the fifth and sixth films, respectively. He is the only actor besides Tom Cruise to appear in all six Mission: Impossible films. It was announced that he would have a role in the Aquaman-based show Mercy Reef, however due to the integration of The WB and UPN for the new network, CW, Mercy Reef was not picked up. Rhames played a homosexual, possibly also homicidal, firefighter who comes out of the closet in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. He narrates the BET television series American Gangster.
In the 2008 film Saving God, he played an ex-con who is released from prison a changed man looking to take over his father's former church congregation in a deteriorating neighborhood. Rhames stars in Phantom Punch, a biopic of boxer Sonny Liston released directly to DVD as well as The Tournament portraying a fighter out to win a no-rules tournament.
Rhames makes an appearance in Ludacris's song "Southern Gangstas" on his album Theater of the Mind. Rappers Playaz Circle and Rick Ross are also featured on the track.
In 2010, he filed a lawsuit against the producer of a film titled Red Canvas, claiming that he had only been paid $175,000 of a $200,000 contract.
He filmed the movie The Red Canvas with Ernie Reyes, Jr. and UFC lightweight contender Gray Maynard and Randy Couture.
In 2015, he filmed a series of commercials for The ADT Corporation.
Rhames is one of the narrators for UFC.
Rhames narrated the team introductions for the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI in February 2017.
Since 2015, Rhames's deep voice has provided the narration for numerous Arby's commercials, with the catchline "Arby's, we have the meats!"

I saw this post of someone’s husband who used his label maker for punny labels for their spices: “It’s Go Thyme,” “I’m Kind of a Big Dill,” “Oregano Gangsta,” and “I Beg Your Parsley.” And if that’s not major James Potter energy, idk what is.
Omg this reminded me: check out the sign we had on our kitchen door for years. We had one on every door in the house but my favourite was Pooping Broadway (instead of Tooting Broadway) on the upstairs toilet.

WESTSIDE GUNN ALBUM REVIEW (7.3/10)
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently boasted that the Buffalo Bills are the only true-blue NY football team, as they’re the only one that actually plays in-state. (Both the Giants and Jets play in a stadium in New Jersey). Buffalo rapper Westside Gunn has been trumpeting a similar claim in the realm of rap, dubbing himself the “New King of New York” despite being from a city upstate that’s more known for its snowfall than hip-hop. But while MCs from the NYC boroughs have tried to shake the dust off their sound with trap hi-hats, Gunn and his Griselda Records cohorts have proudly embraced the loops and drum breaks of the city’s “Golden Age” and revamped them. So much so that the richest rapper to ever make it out of Brooklyn recently gave them a management deal.
On Hitler Wears Hermes 7, the formula doesn’t change, with Gunn rapping ruthlessly about life on the streets of Buffalo over glistening barely touched samples. With each edition of the series, the bars seem to get a little harder, the beats a little prettier, and Gunn’s persona comes further into focus. The project opens with DJ Drama, whose Gangsta Grillz mixtapes once served as proclamations of stardom for artists like Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, decreeing that the “Buffalo kids done did it.” It’s a sentiment Gunn circles back to often on Hermes 7 with crass lines like, “First nigga in my city with a Rolls/Fuck two bad bitches at the Lowe’s,” injecting a conventional rap boast with some of his hometown’s blue-collar attitude.
Gunn’s voice is a nasally high-pitched yap, somewhere between Brooklyn rappers AZ and Troy Ave, and is perfectly tuned for talking shit. “At the Roc Nation brunch with my tool on, don’t disrespect us,” he cooly warns on “GONDEK.” Elsewhere, on “Connie’s Son,” he crows that he’s “made half at least half a mil’ ridin’ Mega buses,” a clever reference to the cheap bus service that’s been exposed more than once as a tool used by traffickers to run drugs across state lines. Griselda crew members Conway The Machine and Benny The Butcher show up to deliver equally gritty verses, as well as a surprisingly in-form Fat Joe, who harkens back to his DITC days on “Kelly’s Korner” by lamenting how he once got his hand put in a meat grinder for stealing a mafia Don’s car.
The production, handled by a who’s who of boom-bap aficionados like Alchemist, Statik Selektah and Griselda in-house producer Daringer, is as lovely as the lyrics are ugly. The swirling keys on “Broadway Jones” sound more like something jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi laid down for A Charlie Brown Christmas than a backdrop to an ode to cooking crack. The soaring vocal sample on the frontend of “Undertaker vs. Goldberg,” meanwhile, throws Gunn’s violent “doot, doot, doot, doot” adlibs into a warm swirl. The only moments the beats come up short are when their simplicity veers into redundancy, like a few minutes into “Undertaker,” which could have been bolstered by some drums.
This could be said for other aspects of Hermes 7 as well, a project that’s endearingly straightforward but has a firm ceiling as a result. By its midpoint, you pretty much know how each song will unfold, a one-note dish that’s tasty on first bite but starts to lose its flavor by the end. Make no mistake, this is who Westside Gunn is: He makes one kind of song and does it well. Putting out a niche product has ironically led him, along with the rest of Griselda Records, to a larger audience. But even recipes for success can be improved upon.

Black Sheep “The Choice Is Yours” (1991)
Black Sheep’s super-complimentary hit single is just like a New York pizza slice: “you tried the rest, now try the best”. That’s what Dres and Mr. Lawnge set to do. Their lyric “This...or that” says it all and Black Sheep tries to get Sony Innovators and The Native Tongues involved while never sweating on gangs, disrespecting women, violence, or even droping out of high school. It’s consciousness in rap and never ones who settled for tried-and-true industry gangsta rap. What do you expect?
The New Birth’s “Keep on Doin' It” (’73), Iron Butterfly’s “Her Favorite Style” (’69), The Bar-Kays’ “Humpin'” (’69) , Johnny Hammond Smith’s “Big Sur Suite” (’73), McCoy Tyner’s “Impressions” (’63), and Sweet Linda Divine’s “I’d Say It Again” (’70) had all been sampled for this. The famous break “Engine, Engine Number 9″ was borrowed from Roger Miller (’65), and was New York City Transit’s ‘9′ Line which helped the ‘1 local’ on the IRT Broadway / 7th Avenue line which ended all of its service in May 2005.
