Why do you New Yorkers run to get coffee and like they are desperate? Or let me rephrase that: Why do I leave the house with such desperation to get coffee at some local coffee shop?? I can make it in my own house. I know this. I know this for a fact. And yet…

There is a need to forage -- and now. “Please, City, unravel my crinkly body and get the kinks out.” Here I go, searching, on the prowl...

If I had to answer my own question, I’d say that for an urbanite like myself (a New Yorker of 35 years and counting) the act of going out of your house while you are barely awake is akin to hunting and gathering. It replaces the natural instinct I probably have, lurking within me, to go out and kill, or otherwise harvest, my food. This “apple galette” that I am munching right now (which by the way cost five dollars) replaces the bloody kill. The coffee I drink (which I have to get to my exact order specifications, or else) replaces the natural selection of which juicy little animal I would have picked out from the herd.

What, my Americano is not exact? It’s as if this little baby lamb/wildebeast/buck was a little bit sinewy or may have been sickly. I had better choose more accurately next time more. So much depends on it.

You know my love of a good cup of coffee. When a place opens up with a coffee board -practically right at my front door– I have to give it a try. And my blessing if it’s worthy.
