Velvet and Veneer are now in the custody of the Trolls. Branch is not happy one bit. His lacks trust and compassion for the siblings… until he witnesses something that changes his heart.

Branch did not like it one bit… Velvet and Veneer should not be here, so close to Trolls. But he couldn’t argue with Poppy and Floyd.

Those two were determined to redeem them… raise them right. Floyd knew the siblings before they turned on him, he said he knew what they were capable of.

Branch walked into Bergentown as they were preparing for the days festivities. There really was no special holiday planned, Poppy just felt like celebrating a milestone for Velvet and Veneer. He eyed the tall Rageoun from far away as she helped Poppy set up balloons.

“You’re such an awesome balloon decorator Velly! You can add that to your talents!” Poppy exclaimed.

“I don’t think “ballon decorator” counts as a talent. Now I’m thinking you’re making things up.” Velvet said sarcastically. Branch approached them eyeing Velvet.

“Your boyfriend keeps giving me the stink eye, I think I might accidentally squash him.” Velvet smirked.

“I’d like to see you try rotten brat.” He said.

“Gloom troll.” Velvet responded.

“Okay!! I love how we are all getting along.” Poppy laughed nervously. “Hey Branch, why don’t you go get Vennie! He went to go pick out some flowers for our center pieces.”

“Why me? Why not send Floyd?” Branch protested.

“Because we are all working on getting along with each other… Besides Vennie would have a kick in hanging out with you!” Poppy exclaimed, a bright smile coming across her face…. How could he possibly say no.

“Whatever.” He exclaimed as he headed towards the direction Poppy told him to. He didn’t know why Veneer would follow him so much. Branch would continuously give him the cold shoulder, but Veneer would always come back around…. Annoying, Branch thought.

“Veneer! Veneer!” Branch called out. “Poppy would like you back now?” Silence. As Branch got closer to a clearing, he saw a bunch of flowers gathered in one pile. Okay, so he’s here somewhere, he thought to himself.

“Veneer!” Branch called out… how could he miss him? The kid was almost 7 feet tall. As Branch kept walking, he heard the sound of waves… the sea wasn’t very far. The little Troll got closer to a clearing that lead him to a cliff that over looked the ocean…. There was Veneer.

“There you are. Come on. Poppy wants those flowers asap.” Branch said…. But Veneer didn’t move. He stood near the cliff gazing out the sea. Branch could see him sway back and forth. “Hello? Earth to Veneer.”

The young Rageoun turned to look at Branch…. The little Troll was lost for words…. Around Veneers eyes was a pink pigmentation, dark circles looming under his eyes…

“Veneer?” Branch called out again.

“It’s my fault. It’s my fault.” Veneer kept repeating. He looked down over the edge of the cliff. “It’s all…my fault.” He took a step closer.

“…..oh my god…” Branch murmured. He couldn’t call for help… he was afraid that anything sudden would cause Veneer to jump…. Branch had to calm him down… he had to choose his words wisely.

“N-nothing is your fault Veneer. Let’s talk about it.” Branch said as he inched closer.

“No it is. I’m a horrible brother… my sister hates me, the world hates me, you hate me.” Veneer said as he looked over the cliff.

“Ven…. I- I don’t hate you.” Branch responded. How was he, a 6 inch little troll, supposed to pull a 7 foot a Rageoun away from the cliff.

“What if I…. It be better if…. What if I stepped over this cliff?” Veneer inched closer and closer. “It be peaceful…. So peaceful…”

“No Veneer! We need you. Your sister needs you. You’re working to get better remember.” Branch began to calculate his next moves as he eyed a tree near by.

“I hurt Floyd…. I let us hurt Floyd…. The water…it seems so fresh….” Veneer was inches from falling over. “It’ll be okay….”

“No!” Whipping his hair around the tree, Branch slingshotted himself around and right towards Veneers chest. The force was enough to cause the Rageoun to stumble backwards away from the cliff. Branch landed with a soft THUD next to Veneer. The Troll looked up towards him…. The pigmentation was gone as were the dark circle…. He could see Veneer starting to come back slowly.

“What happened?! Why are we here?” He began to panic. He turned and saw Branch. “What was I going to do?” He asked as tears began filling his eyes.

Branch couldn’t believe what he saw… the kid was about to throw himself over a cliff…. And it seemed like he had no control of what he was doing, only acting on impulse. If Branch had showed up a minute too late…The small Troll got close to Veneer, placing a small hand on his.

“…..We’re going to help you…. We’re going to help both of you.”

Seksuallizus - sexuality Sugupuoli-identitietta - gender identity

*In Republic of Karelia, the word lezbijanka has negative connotation and lesbo is more commonly used

In modern times most karelians use these loanwords based on anglosphere views on gender and sexuality.

Traditionally speaking the views on gender and sexuality have been somewhat different, and words used have been more poetic and descriptive in many ways. Gender is seen as one role among others and as such, "mother" and "man" for example are not roles that contradict each other in any way, even if it is less common than being "woman" and "mother".

Without going into too many details here are few examples:

"On ukonvembelehes aliči käynnyh." - lit. "has walked under the reinbow*" - person who has changed their sex and role (gender) in which they live. Roughly speaking a trans person.

Example sentence: "Ozutat ilokkahambale nygöi gu olet ukonvembelehes aliči käynnyh." - "you seem happier now that you've transitioned." "Olen ukonvembelehes aliči käynnyh," - "I am trans person."

(*the association of rainbow is rooted on Karelian belief system in which person who passes from under rainbow has their sex changed, and the fact that rainbow is western lgbt+ symbol is coincidence.)

"eule yksis ruutois" - lit. "isn't in one (set of) traditional clothes" - person who travels between and beyond two genders, a "nonbinary*" person.

Example sentence: "En ole yksis ruutois." - "I am nonbinary."

*"gender binary" should be used in very loose relation to karelian traditions as "man" and "woman" are not seen as opposite ends of binary (or any other) scale any more than birch and spruce are only trees in existence or opposites to each other. Traditional views of karelians are rarely if ever linear.

Kaksńeuvoni* - lit. "person with two/many of advice/guiding/ instruction/ tools". A (visibly) intersex person.

*Please note that some people find this term offensive due to its similarity to old Finnish slur for people with ambiguous genitalia.

Example sentence: "Rodivuin kaksńeuvozenna." - "I was born intersex." "Olen kaksńeuvoni briha." - "I am intersex man."

Miehii suačii mies, brihoi suačii briha - lit. man who loves men

Example sentence: "Miun velli on miehii suačii mies, vai miehii suačou." - "My little brother is gay man, he is only interested in men." "Olen miehii suvaičii mies, a dai naizii suačen." - "I love men, but I'm also interested in women."

Buzaniekka - Man who wears pearls, man who loves men.

Akkoinpaimoi, akkoinpäiväińe - lit. wives' herder, wives' sun. "Feminine" man, man who prefers working with and spending time with women

Ristivellet - lit. cross brothers. Men who have exchanged their neck-crosses or other similar tokens. Can mean deeply close friends or male couple

Naizii suačii naińe, neidizii suačii neidińe - lit. woman who loves women

Karžuniekka - woman who loves women. Has also meant unmarried woman with implication she doesn't wish to marry a man.

Lepänakka, tabakka-akka - lit. alder's wife, tobacco-wife. "Masculine" woman, woman who prefers working with and spending time with men

Rističikot - lit. cross sisters. Women who have exchanged neck-crosses or other similar tokens. Can mean deeply close friends or female couple

"Kävelöy kahtel puolel." - lit. "One who walks on both sides." - person who loves others regardless of gender, roughly bi- or pansexual.

Example sentence: "Kävelen kahtel puolel, ollou mies, naine libo ei yksis ruutois." - "I am bi-/pansexual, I don't care about gender." "Häi on kahtel puolel kävelii, kaikkie suačou." - "They are pan-/bisexual, they don't care about gender."
