“I kissed Tommy.”

Maddie, to her credit, does not choke on her coffee. She does however take way more of the hot beverage into her mouth than she intended and it burns as it goes down. 

“Or, uh, he kissed me and I—I kissed him back—because I liked it—liked kissing him. And we’re, uh, he’s picking me up Saturday—for a date.”

Maddie is aware that Buck is waiting for her to say something but her—looking for her approval brain is still trying to catch up, and all she can think to ask is— “Tommy?” 

“Yeah, y’know, uh, Kinard…” He trails off, staring at his hands.

Buck’s shoulders have hunched up and his entire posture is sinking in on itself in a way Maddie recognizes all too well, and—finally—her brain exits the loading screen it was stuck on. 

She reaches out to place a hand over his and feels him tense and then relax ever so slightly under her touch.

“Hey,” she says softly, waiting for him to meet her eyes, “I’m proud of you, this is a big thing to discover about yourself, and I’m so proud of you for embracing it. Thank you for telling me, Evan.” 

The tension drains from him completely, and Maddie gives his hands a gentle squeeze before retracting her hand.

“So, Tommy,” She leans back in her chair a bit and fixes him with her best inquisitive older sister gaze, “how’d that happen?”

“He came over to my apartment to, uh, apologize to me, actually, for ‘causing bad blood between me and Eddie’ which was—incredibly sweet but so backward because I was definitely the one causing any ‘bad blood’ with how stupid I’d been acting all ‘cause I was feeling jealous that Eddie was getting all his attention.” 

Maddie blinks, reminded why her brain had stalled out before, because—yeah, that was definitely not what she was expecting the follow up to her brother’s unusual behavior this past week to be.

“You were jealous—of Eddie?” 

Buck shrugs, “I mean, yeah, it explains why I was acting like a—and these are your own words—’fourteen year old girl.’”

“Right,” she studies him for a moment, he looks—at peace, in a way she’s not sure she’s ever seen him before, like a weight lifted from his shoulders. “And Tommy—he makes you happy?” 

“I mean all we’ve done is kiss and talk a little ‘cause he had to leave for a shift, but—yeah. I really liked kissing him, and I’m so excited for our date—like, I don’t think I’ve felt this excited about a date with someone since—since Abby.” 

Maddie softens, because for all her issues with Abby, she knows how important that relationship was to Buck. That this is important to Buck now. That the smile on his face is one she’s never saw when he was with Ali, or Taylor, or Natalia. 

That his happiness is something entirely genuine.

“Well, maybe just try avoid an emergency tracheotomy this time around?” 

Buck groans, burying his head in his hands, “I never should’ve told you about that.”

9. Favorite brotp?

Do I really have to choose just one?? There are so many good ones. But I think I'll go with Hen and Chimney for this, I simply love their dynamic and how they're there for each other and do silly things together.

I have to give an honourable mention to Bobby and Michael, though, I fully did not see that one coming but I'm so glad of the way their relationship was portrayed. Also Eddie and Linda because I didn't know I needed their friendship before the show gave it to us.

17. Favorite minor character?

Okay, so first of all I love them all dearly. I don't know how the show manages to make everyone so likable (well, apart from a few characters that I think weren't even meant to be). But I'm stalling now. I think I'm going to say Karen for this because she's just really amazing.

Honourable mentions to Ravi and Albert, though, they're so good too.

45. Favorite kid?

Again, they're all great but Christopher. He's just such an amazing kid and maybe I'm biased because I'm such a massive buddie shipper but yeah.

Shout out also to May who we've seen grow up so much.

58. Favorite parallel?

Now this is a rude question because this show loves its parallels and there are simply too many to choose from. So do I go for something shippy? Something character-y? What season? There are simply too many.

Okay, so, maybe I'll just pick a few?

For starters I love all the bathena and buddie parallels we've gotten so far from the I got yous to the slings Athena and Eddie wore all the way through to Bobby and Buck having to witness Athena and Eddie in danger.

Then there's the heart-wrenching parallel of Chimney seeing Kevin and Albert fall through the roof that I absolutely love in all its angsty glory.

And while we're on the topic of siblings, the Buckley siblings and their pinkie promises are very dear to me.

Lastly, I'll mention the way that seasons 3 and 5 paralleled each other in so many aspects. I just found it so fascinating to watch.

Maddie for the character breakdown 🥺🥺

favorite thing about them: I love how genuinely kind-hearted and gentle she is. She has every right in the world, after a lifetime of emotional and physical abuse, to be made of of sharp edges and harshness. But she's not. If there is any one character that exemplifies that "All that pain and misery and loneliness, and it just made [her] kind" quotation, it's Maddie. She has experienced the worst that the world has to offer, and her response to it is to make sure nobody else has to suffer what she did.

least favorite thing about them: She too often will not defend herself when she has every right to and deserves to. She would let anybody walk all over her, especially if it's somebody she cares about, without complaint or defending herself. Not to say that she isn't strong, because this woman is strong as steel - but she is so used to taking abuse that she rarely defends herself from the people she loves.

favorite line: "I never wanted you to die, Doug... but I do forgive you. And I forgive myself... for loving you too much. For staying too long. And for not dying right next to you. So today, I'm gonna leave you here. I am gonna run out of these woods, and I am going to live. I survived you, Doug. And I will never be sorry for that"

random headcanon: Maddie played with dolls a LOT when she was little, but when Daniel died and she had to take care of Buck she lined up all her dolls and had a very serious conversation with them. She told them she would always love them, but she has to put all her mothering towards Buck now, and so for now she can’t mother them. Then she carefully wrapped them all up in boxes and packed them away in the attic. (They’re still there. Maybe someday Jee can have them)

unpopular opinion: Maddie does NOT deserve the vitriol that gets thrown at her, and she had every right to show up at Buck’s place unannounced because he is her brother and she is his sister and that’s literally how that works sometimes

Maddie

Why I like her- her backstory. I will keep this short but everything with Doug, her trauma and her high points (like Buckley siblings and Madney)make her so intresting (her anxiety is relatable too) also- it is Jennifer Love Hewitt... need I say more????

Why I don’t like her- tough one. The only thing is really the stalker plot, though it shows a lot about her trauma it is not one of my favourite things.

Buck has a nightmare the first night back from this hospital. He wakes with a start, his sweat drenched t-shirt sticking to his skin like an all too uncomfortable second skin and there’s a horrible itch in the back of his throat that feels a little too much like choking.

He shoves off the blankets, stumbling his way out of bed and towards the stairs, he makes it about halfway down them before realizing there is a dim light on in his kitchen, it’s another few steps before he notices the person sat at his counter.

“Maddie?”

She doesn’t startle—though he supposes he wasn’t exactly trying to be quiet coming down the stairs—setting the mug in her hands down carefully on the counter and looking over at him.

Her expression melts when she sees him and she’s standing up and moving towards the stairs.

“What are you still doing here?”

She stops right in front of the stairs, cocking her head as she studies him—he has no doubt from the look on his face that he must look as bad as he feels.

“I was worried about you,” she says, her hand twitches out towards him, but she seems to stop herself, “I know you wanted your space and you didn’t want any of us smothering you and that’s why you turned down the offers to stay at mine and Chimney’s or Bobby and Athena’s or Eddie’s. But I was worried about you—worried for you, and I didn’t want you to be alone—at least not for this first night. I love you, and I wanted you to know someone is here for you.”

Buck blinks once—trying to fight back the tears threatening the corners of his eyes—and then tips forward slightly towards Maddie—her arms wrap around him instinctively and he sinks into her embrace.

“Hey,” Maddie says softly, her hands soothingly rubbing at his back, “easy, I got you, I’m here.”

He lets himself just be held by her,ignoring the slight awkwardness of having to hunch down to tuck into her arms and the way his sweat drenched clothes are surely seeping into Maddie’s, she holds him despite all this, hands never pausing in their gentle administrations.

Eventually the burn at the back of his throat gets too much and he pulls back slightly, she lets her grip loosen and a hand comes up to cup his cheek.

“What do you need?”

“Water?”

She nods, guiding him towards the kitchen, her touch only leaving once he’s settled onto one of the stools, moving to grab him a glass and water from the fridge.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Buck shakes his head, raising the glass placed in front of him to his lips and gulping down the water in a way that would probably be a little embarrassing if the everything of this situation didn’t put him past the embarrassing point.

He doesn’t really care, and he’s pretty sure Maddie doesn’t either.

“Thank you,” he says, once he stops feeling like clawing his throat out and sets the glass back down, “for staying.”

She smiles at him, the soft, warm smile he thinks might be reserved as her Buck smile.

“Are you—are you able to—could you—is Jee okay? Without you tonight?”

“She’s fine, she has her dad,” Maddie says, reaching out to run her fingers through his hair, “I’m pretty sure the two of them stayed up a little past her bedtime and ended up crashing together on the couch watching a Barbie movie. She’s not the kid I’m worried about tonight.”

He relaxes slightly under her touch, letting his eyes slip closed for a moment.

“C’mon,” she moves back around the counter to help him from the stool, “let’s get you back upstairs, into a clean shirt and back to bed, yeah?”

He lets her guide her back upstairs, she deposits him gently on his bed and then grabs a clean shirt from the still unfolded laundry basket sat by the foot of his bed.

“You’ll stay?” Buck asks again, once he’s changed into the clean shirt and lied back on the bed.

She smiles at him again, “scoot over, I’ll lay right here, I won’t go anywhere.”

He obliges, moving to give her plenty of room and a few of the spare pillows.

She props herself up next to him, half lying half sitting against the headboard, and arm reaching over his head, he settles into her a little and her other hand drops to his hair, fingers gently carding through his curls.

It’s nearly a perfect echo of years past when Buck was younger and would sneak into Maddie’s room after a nightmare.

“You used to sing to me when I had nightmares,” he says, voice hushed.

“You want me to sing to you now?”

There’s no judgement in her tone, and Buck feels a little overwhelmed with love for her. He nods into her shoulder.

He falls asleep to the gentle sound of her voice and comfortingly familiar lyrics of rainbow connection.

Azula and/or Robin Buckley

Azula:

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life 

The greatest fictional villain ever written? Yes I think so. Azula is so damn interesting and complex as a character. And fun.

hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang

She's a child

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

I know it seems obvious to put her in Slytherin but that is the house that fits her best imo lol. She's ambitious, cunning, and will go to any lengths to achieve her goals. And while she is a very powerful bender and good physical fighter as well, she uses her manipulation skills quite a lot as well. (See: the conquer of Ba Sing Se). Unlike Zuko (who is a Gryffindor) she usually thinks before she acts and isn't impulsive.

best quality: Her intelligence. Azula is damn smart. And it's another thing that makes her so dangerous.

worst quality: The way she treats other people. She really has no healthy relationships throughout the show :/

ship them with: I kind of like her with Ty Lee but mostly in an AU sense. Or in a world after Azula is redeemed. Either way I headcanon her as a lesbian and choose to believe she'll get a girlfriend once she's healthy and ready for one.

brotp them with: As I said before, she really has no healthy canon relationships. But I love her complicated and tragic sibling relationship with Zuko. It makes me cry. I also love the Azula/Mai/Ty lee trio, even though it was actually a mess.

needs to stay away from: Ozai

misc. thoughts: Azula is another character that makes me sad lol. Unlike some fans, I think her arc and downfall was really well written and actually made complete sense. But I still wish we could have seen at least the beginning of a redemption arc for her. At the same time though, she did make an amazing and badass villain.

Robin Buckley:

She's cute!

My opinion of this might change if we learn more about her in S4. But she seems like the academic type. She's full of knowledge and seems like the type of person that took school kind of seriously. And I got the impression that she values knowledge a lot.

best quality: Her sarcasm. I loled at the times she dragged Steve lol

worst quality: I don't think there's anything I dislike about Robin.

ship them with: No big OTP but I like the stuff the fandom makes for Robin/Nancy and Robin/Kali. I hope she gets a girlfriend at some point since she's the first canon and confirmed LGBT character on Stranger Things. But tbh I won't hold my breath lol. (I do 100% believe Will is gay but at the same time, it hasn't been solidly confirmed the way Robin was. Don't come at me fandom.)

misc. thoughts: I know a lot of people hated S3 but there were a lot of things that I actually enjoyed about it lol. One of which was the straightbaiting they did with Steve and Robin. (Though we now know that it was mostly Maya Hawke's idea, not the writers' lmao). Robin coming out to Steve is genuinely ond of my favorite TV moments.
