The MarkWHO42’s Universe Podcast – Episode 341 – Discovery Minus HBO Equals Disaster
Discovery+ has purchased Warner Brothers, which includes the HBO Max streaming service and the DC Universe‘s movies and shows. CEO David Zaslav, projecting his alter-ego Victor Zsasz, has been slashing everything fans love including Sesame Street and many DC projects, most notably the Batgirl film which was in post-production. Having already upset so many people, the question now is what’s next?…

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS
Tumblr media
Some rough concept art I made of a semi aged up Gotham City Sirens, in the style of Bruce Timm in Batman: The Animated Series. I grew up watching this show religiously, and I will always love these characters. The idea here is that Bruce Timm decides to do another series, set 10 years after the death of the Joker at the hands of Tim Drake, called "Gotham City: war Games". It'd be darker in tone, and would combine the storylines of "No Man's Land" and "War Games", with Stephanie Brown as Robin and Kate Kane as Batwoman. I'll be honest, I'm mainly going off the Canon I remember, but I know Bruce Timm himself isn't a big fan of canonicity, so I m just running with it 😅
Tumblr media
After the Jokers death, Harley disappeared and was presumed dead, based on the account of Barbara Gordon. But she returns at the end of the first episode, at the door of Barbara Gordon, and shoots her. This paralyses Barb, who goes on to become The Oracle. This helps to semi-canonize the killing joke within this universe (where there is no joker to pull the trigger), and helps establish Harley as the savage new Mob Boss that she becomes. The second episode of the series would be called "The Kissing Joke", and would be an alternate twisted take on the killing joke, with this newly established Harley as the primary antagonist. Her sudden reappearance in Gotham tips the newly established villainous hierarchy into Chaos, and Harley is quick to revel in the debris.
Tumblr media
After Joker's death, Selina Kyle seamlessly blended into the background, surviving on stolen goods as Gotham erupted into a battle for top place in the hierarchy. But her skills didn't go unnoticed, and she was recruited by none other than Ra's Al Ghul. Newly trained in Mercinaryism, she forms a formidable duo with Talia Al Ghul, until she betrays her at the last minute to help Bruce, and is served with a bounty on her head. She spends years travelling the globe evading capture. Not much is known of how she spent these years, and she remains in anonymity. Until she hears Harley has returned to Gotham. With Ra's hot on her tail, she heads home to see her sisters for the first time in a long time.
Tumblr media
After Joker's death, Pamela searched for Harley tirelessly, but after 1 year she joined everyone else in assuming her dead. People said it was the first time they saw her cry, her tears burned the pews in the church. And then, like the others, she laid her claim to the crime throne of Gotham. She put up a strong fight, but after a particularly fierce battle with Mr Freeze, she is defeated. Mortally wounded, she heads to Gotham Conservatory to recuperate. Once she is healed, she slowly rebuilds her reputation as a formidable villainess, now without her sisters. That is, until many years later, when she hears a voice call out to her from the garden -
"Pammy? Is that you? Jeez, you look like crap. Maybe I can sneak ya some shampoo."
This was honestly just something I did at 3am on my phone a bit whiffed, and ended up liking. I hope you like it too 😊💕

Loosely based on joker/ Harley Quinn. Hermione is appointed as Draco’s psychiatrist and shows him pictures of what he’s done to try and get some emotion out of him. I think it starts with Hermione being trapped in a cell (imprisoned in a ward?) and Draco breaking her out?
Mad Love: Psychotic Ex-Death Eaters and The Witches that Love Them - Fantasticlavendercrystals - M, WIP (possibly abandoned) - Summary: Hermione Granger works at a wizarding psychiatric facility, and she dreads getting assigned to the problem-patient Draco Malfoy, who only talks to her. Why is that? "Grrrraaaannnngeeerrr" Draco loudly whispered. 'That's the first time he's spoke, in any sort of way, in three years.' Loosely based off Paul Dini's and Bruce Timm's 'Mad Love' Harley Quinn/Joker comic. Also takes inspiration from 'The Silence of the Lambs' by Thomas Harris. Multiple chapters to come.

Here are the US representatives who voted against the US pro-LGBT+ Equality Act
Tumblr media
The US Equality Act is to outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ people in housing, credit, jury service, public accommodations, and federal funding.
The House of Representatives passed the legislation yesterday, but it is unlikely that the Senate will follow up, given the Republican Party's increasing hostility to queer people. They are currently weaponizing transphobia in an attempt at mobilizing their base.
In the Senate the bill will require at least 10 Republicans to vote with all Democrats to advance past the so-called filibuster.
Metro Weekly has listed the representatives that voted against the law in the House.

Hello! Your amazing Batfam art came up on my feed today and Im 🥺🥺🥺!! batfam is one my biggest obsessions!!!!! So I wanted to stop by and say 1) AHDKSHSKSJAJD IM LOVE THE ART YOU DID (also ur Terry McGinnis art is INCREDIBLE)
and 2) I don't know you so I don't know what kind of fanfiction you like, (and it's very possible you've already read it!), so feel free to ignore this!!! But, I wanted to recommend my absolute FAV batfam fic/series!!!! It's one I recommend to basically anyone who even slightly likes batman bc it's just. That. Good. The first work in the series is called Foreign Object, and the series is called Cor et Cerebrum. It's written by AudreyCritter on Ao3!!!
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/7804285/chapters/17807005
The characterization, the story line, the interaction between characters, the writing style,,,, EVERYTHING is just!!! It's all I could ask for in a story. I'm constantly recommending it to my friends (and anyone I come across) and it's basically an unofficial fandom within a fandom bc everyone I've talked to that has read it is also obsessed 😂 (btw, I saw in your blog description not to request nsfw, whether that matters for rec'ing something idk, but this series has no smut, and there is only one short [that isn't part of the main storyline] that is rated M and it's for gore. Everything else is T or G rated.)
Like I said feel free to ignore this! I tend to make a fool of myself when it comes to this bc I get too excited about this story and batfam in general... ^^; i simply see someone who also likes batfam and cannot keep my mouth shut haha
HIIII AAAAAAAA (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Ok ok so first off, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! >//w//< Like seriously, I'm flattered you like the art!!! I don't get to draw dc stuff much (barring the last three art posts), and I wish I could! The Bruce Timm art style is just so much easier for me to understand ;w; ✨ I know I'm a Transformers blog, but taking a break to draw something easier is nice too! lmao I'm rambling again so I'll just move on now--
(So sorry I didn't respond when this first came to my inbox aa ^^'' as usual, I'm so bad at responding to people sdjdsjsdj I just get nervous about how my response sounds and overthink everything, and then it takes me a while to actually write it out... o//o)
Second, that fic sounds really interesting!! I honestly don't get around to reading much fanfic anymore, since I spend more time writing my own or working on art stuff or binge-watching one of the hundreds of shows on my to-watch list ahah but oh my goodness?? A well-written batfam-centric fic???? *eyes emoji intensifies* aight, I'll definitely check it out!!
And thank you very much for the warning! <3 I mean tbh nsfw and the like doesn't bother me too much, I'm just so terrible at writing/drawing nsfw stuff so....I put that disclaimer in my bio to prevent people from requesting that kinda stuff or sending it in straight-up and without warning o///o And I can live with violent stuff ^^''
So I apologize if I started rambling aimlessly again, but thank you so much! I'm happy my art brought you some joy ^w^ And it's good to know there are more of us out there, who appreciate the batfam hehe 😊😎🦇💖✨
I hope you have a lovely day/evening, and thanks for dropping into my ask box! :D
-Kuni 🥰✨

Paul Dini’s Jingle Belle: “Sanity Clauses” review or Santa’s Court Ordered Family Therapy Holiday Special
Tumblr media
Merry Christmas everyone! I”m finally back on the reviewing reindeer after a week out with a cold, aside from the usual ducktales review, and it’s once again a comission from friend of the blog and the only guy who pays me for reviews weirdkev27. If you have your own holliday hyjinks you’d like me to review I do reviews of television and comics for 5 dollars an episode/issue, wtih variable prices for trades in comics case depending on length. Hit me up via my dm’s here on tumblr or send me an ask for my discord if you want to know more. WIth that plug out of the way away we go.  This one was a bit unusual... in that when Kev bought it up I assumed he was going to buy a few issues of Jingle Belle, Paul Dini’s creator owned character we’re talking about today, and just have me review those. What I didn’t realize is he was buying me the full package, a collection of pretty much every jingle belle tale, as well as the released after it “Handmade’s Tale”. one shot. So yeah, while I had’nt really thought of rules for this kind of thing before from now on your free to buy a work for me to review... just keep in mind i’ts both not required for me to review something, and will not wave the commission fee as I use those fees to pay bills, buy things I need like charger cables, and just generally keep my bank account afloat while I look for a day job.
But... since I hadn’t firmly established any of this yet, and since Kev’s gift means a bunch more commissions from a guy who not only made sure I could afford Christmas, but who has provided me steady work while i’m out of work... this one’s on the house.  So with all the jargon settled, who is Jingle Belle? Jingle Belle is an indie comics character created and owned by Paul Dini in 1998. Paul Dini is an animation god, who thanks to this review I know more about his career than I did before and as much as I always should have. Dini got his start in the 80′s, writing for everything from He Man to Gary Coleman Adventures, before getting called up to the big leagues for Tiny Tune Adventures around the time of the animation renaissance. To my shock, as  I wasn’t aware he wrote for that fine program, he wrote 35 episodes including my personal favorite Prom-ise her Anything.  But while a talented comedy writer, his main talent would show when he moved on to Batman the Animated Series as a writer and story editor. He was one of the main creative forces along with Bruce Timm, with the two going on to make the DCAU, aka some of the best superhero shows ever made, after already making easily one of if not THE best with BTAS. And Timm’s influence showed, Co-Creating Harley Quinn with Timm, and writing the series best episode Heart of Ice, which reworked Mr Freeze from a hoaky silver age villian into the tragic and thoroughly sympathetic character he’s been since that episode. Seriously that’s another one to add to the review pile.. which is giant and sentient at this point. And seriously EVERY episode on his imdb page credits is an utter classic and one I remember fondly. The guy is one of the most talented and seemingly nicest guys in the business and both the world of batman and the world of animation owe him a LOT.  So to my surprise, I found out in the 2000′s he had a comic, Jingle Belle.. then for whatever reason just never dug into it till now. But now post digging Jingle Belle is Paul Dini’s long running series of one shots and series at various companies following the adventures of Santa’s rebellious teenage-ish daughter.. techincally she’s in the 200′s but still looks and acts like a teenager. The idea came about when he got a christmas card from Stephen Speilberg, and wondered how the kids of famous folks dealt with that and if they resented their famous fathers. And whose more famous than santa?. The series spins both out of that brilliant idea and out of Dini’s love for sunday comic strips, back when the panels were larger and creators were given more freedom to go nuts, though even today i’ve seen plenty of great stuff so it’s not all lost pauly.  So in that spirit rather than one long ongoing Jingle Belle is instead a series of one shots, stories in anthologies and what have you, one and done stories more focused on the comedy. The comic has bounced around from various publishers, starting as something pitched to Oni Press, home of Scott Pilgrim and not much else, and has bounced around various publishers since, most recently ending up at IDW, where the trade i’m reading from comes from. So how does a great concept from one of the world’s most creative minds shake out? Let’s unwrap this present and find out.
We open with an appropriately christmasy rhymey opening as we get the story of Jingle Belle: She’s the daughter of santa claus and mrs. claus, in this case the Queen of the Elves. Which isn’t established until the next story but whatever. And as you’d expect she grew up a cheery, rosey little girl who loved helpiing dad in the workshop.. then everything changed when puberty attacked.
Tumblr media
As you can see Jingle is now your standard Bratty Teenage Daughter sterotype. At least in this story. See this initial story feels much like a pilot: It’s clear things aren’t ironed out 100% for the idea, and i’ts more a self contained way to get across the general idea, that being Santa has a rebellious teen daughter, via what comes off as an snl skit in comic book form. THat’s not an insult, it’s a GOOD snl skit, and I am genuinely surprised only one movie company’s attempted adapting this comic: the concept is great. I’m just letting you know what i’m working with is all.
So naturally as a high concept comedy skit, Jing soon, after sharing some cigarettes with the local eskmo boys and accidently lighting her Reindeer’s butt on fire and wrecking her sleigh and some surrounding property, Santa is at his witt’s end and we end up in family therapy. And honestly.. Santa in a family therapists office is a great concept. IT’s why I compare it to a sketch: It’s just a simple one line proposal that’s really damn funny and really damn eye catching. It’s often REALLY hard to get a good santa parody going, so I admire how well he pulled it off here.  But what really centers it is Jing giving her side, making her a bit more than the mostly one dimensional bratty rebellious daughter she’s been pegged as. Oh sure tha’ts still mostly what she is here, I’ll leave it to later stories to flesh her out hopefully, but she gives vallid reasons WHY she acts out: She points out no one even knew Santa had a daughter, and she has no songs or specials or any of that about her. The most Santa can offer up is “Jingle Bells” because the boys say “jingle all the way”... which really, especially in 2020, just makes HIM come off worse for not only slut shaming his daughter, but that the best defense he can offer is “Well some local boys talk about how you boned them that counts right?”.
That.. poorly aged joke aside Jingle brings up another good point on how sh’es on his shit list.. errr.. naughty list. Still a good gag. And yeah the therapist is understandably surprised Santa dosen’t give his own daughter presents, though his wife does give a valid counter to that: He has to hold a higher standard than anybody.
And that’s why I’m really intrigued by this concept and want to read more: WE have plenty of stories about Santa’s kids, i’ll grant, from him adopting a kid like in elf, to him passing on the legacy with films like Arthur Christmas and Fred Claus, or even just films about his legacy, like the Santa Claus, aka that time Santa died and his clothes forced Tim Allen into a job he dosen’t want with weight and beard gain he didn’t ask for via yuletide mummy’s curse to become the new santa and nearly loose custody of his child. What i’m saying is the concept is inherently fascinating and The Santa Clause is deeply terrifying if you stop to think about it for two seconds.. as is the sequel what with it’s Nazi Robot Santa Claus Tim Allen. Yes really.
But this one’s unique in that it’s not about the legacy. Oh sure Santa tries to get Jing interested, and his last attempte wound up with them having to take the bus, another great gag and i’m glossing over most because this is a very funny little comic, but the main focus is more on what kind of pressure that puts on a kid: wouldn’t you rebel too if your parents wanted you to be perfect and to follow in the family business of being basically a perfect human being? Jing herself sums it up perfectly towards the end of the story.
Tumblr media
Granted after a tearful hug, Jing internally says “that new snowboard is mine.. but i’ts hard not to feel that a godo chunk of this is genuine. Sure she’s playing her parents a bit but.. you’d crack too if your dad was freaking Santa. I’m really intrigued to see where this goes both comedically and character stuff wise.
So we end on another christmasy narration bit as Belle plays good for a while, snapping only when it docent seem like she gets her snowboard. A comedy ending and an eh one. Not the best honeslty, I feel the comci would’ve been better ended just at the snowboard is mine bit, but i’ve seen worse.
Final Thoughts: A really good story. WHile it’s rough around the edges, clearly Dini and others have buffed them out over two decades, and i’m really intrigued to see more of this this holiday season and others. Again some parts, mostly playing Jing being sexually liberated for “OH HAW HAW SHE’S A SLUT” laughs is cringe inducing, but most of the jokes have aged well and for a pilot it’s not bad. I really look forward to reading more of the character and diving into her this season and beyond.
Until then be good to one another, have a happy holidays and always remember: There's  always another rainbow.

you FOOL. you activated my special interest trap card
i read the whole thing and. oh my god. o h m y god. I WAS SO WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING. LOOK AT ALL THESE BATKIDS. I LOVE ‘EM AND HAVE *NO* IDEA WHAT’S GOING ON IN THESE COMICS. - kanny
i’m finally home from work let’s DO THIS
Jason Todd:  He died and came back and became Red Hood, and is regarded as “the badass Robin”.  He was actually the second one!  Batman was mopey and lonely bc Robin #1 (Dick Grayson) decided to leave for college and also become Nightwing.  Then he found this scrappy little street kid stealing the tires off the Batmobile.  Then he found out the scrappy little street kid didn’t have parents.  His Son Now.
Tim Drake: Third Robin.  You were referencing Tim in Batman the Animated Series.  B:TAS Robin… is Jason Todd.  He’s Jason Todd.  Matching up to the comics, BTAS Tim and Jason both have a criminal father and are known for being a sarcastic little shit and they have HORRIBLE fates at the Joker’s hands.  The animated series just called him Tim for marketing reasons.  It’s weird.  Comics Tim is known as “the smart one” and out of the Robins he’s the best with technology and he’s a HUGE DORK.  Comics Tim saw Batman being angsty after Jason died, and Tim basically hired himself as Robin to balance Batman out.
Dick Grayson: First Robin!  He was an acrobat in a circus, his parents got killed and Bruce was like “Oh shit an orphan.  Just like me.  I gotta adopt him”.  Eventually becomes Nightwing.  Probably the Robin who’s best at teamwork.
SIDE NOTE: Teen Titans cartoon Robin is an amalgam of Dick, Jason, and Tim.  Sort of an “every-Robin”.  A convenient way to divide him up is “Dick’s identity/backstory, Jason’s attitude, and Tim’s skillset,” but really every Robin has layers like an onion and different fans will recognize different aspects.
Barbara Gordon: Batgirl!  She got shot by Joker and her lower body was paralyzed, so she became the hacker hero Oracle.  Bruce Timm seems convinced that she and Batman were a romantic item and… gross.  No.  No one wants that.
Damian Wayne: Bruce’s bio-son who Bruce didn’t know existed for like 12 years.  Was raised with assassins.  Underwent a lot of character development, still a little shit but much less murdery.  I think he’d be in Injustice?  I don’t like thinking about Injustice, they did my main man Clark dirty.  Fifth Robin. ADDITIONS
Stephanie Brown: Has had her own hero identity Spoiler, has been the fourth Robin (for a very short period, but SHE MATTERED FUCK YOU DAN DIDIO) (Tim was Robin, had to quit for complicated reasons and Stephanie replaced him, then Stephanie died temporarily and Tim was back to Robin) and was the third Batgirl.  She’s spunky.
Cassandra Cain: Second Batgirl.  Has a black bodysuit that covers her entirely and has stitches over the mouth, it looks so cool.  Her asshole dad raised her to be the perfect assassin, an upbringing that also left her with a loooot of difficulty processing words.  After she killed her first target, she decided killing sucks and she never wants to do it ever, and fucked off to live with Batman.
Current comics like to pretend Stephanie and Cass never existed >:(

‘Joker’ Paints An Uncomfortable Picture of Today’s World
Tumblr media
Never did I think I’d see the day where I could parallel even the darkest of Batman themes to the world we live in.
Todd Phillips’ latest blockbuster Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the clown prince of crime we all know and love. Phillips’ other films include the Hangover trilogy, but this new film doesn’t have a happy go-lucky trio trying to remember their drunken stupors and find their fourth mate.
Joker makes the audience laugh, but in a nervous, sort of uncomfortable way.
At the Venice Film Festival, Joker received an eight-minute standing ovation.
Reviews poured in following the Italian premiere and they backed up the hype. Mark Hughes of Forbes said, “The fact is, everyone is going to be stunned by what Phoenix accomplishes, because it’s what many thought impossible — a portrayal that matches and potentially exceeds that of The Dark Knight’s Clown Prince of Crime.”
The film opens with Phoenix touching up his makeup in front of a vanity. He hooks his fingers in the corners of his mouth and pulls them upward in a smile, downwards in a frown, then back up again; a single, mascara-stained tears roll down his cheek, and laughter ensues.
Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, an eccentric man with a funny laugh and a horrifying past, searching for his identity. The film encapsulates Arthur’s journey with himself and his downward spiral into becoming the Joker.
There are some prevalent themes within Joker that are worth talking about; the most prevalent being mental health and its effect on people in today’s society. There are several scenes in which Phoenix is sitting in front of his therapist, and she eventually jerks the needle off the record and informs him that the city has cut the clinic’s funding and their meetings must come to an end. The therapist goes on to claim that the higher-ups, “don’t give a shit,” about people like him or her.
According to the National Survey of Drug Use and Health, in 2016, 9.8 million adults aged 18 or older in the U.S. had a serious mental illness; 2.8 million of those adults were below the poverty line. Insurance companies have also been known to skimp when it comes to mental health cases, which makes it that much harder for people relating to Arthur to seek help. According to a study published by Milliman, in 2015, behavioral care was four to six times more likely to be provided out-of-network than medical or surgical care. In President Trump’s proposed 2020 budget, his administration aims to cut $241 billion from Medicaid, an assistance program that provides healthcare to low-income Americans.
Dancing is a symbol that is heavy in Joker. According to a Harvard study, “dance helps reduce stress, increases levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin, and helps develop new neural connections, especially in regions involved in executive function, long-term memory, and spatial recognition.” After especially tense scenes, Arthur begins a slow, emphasized dance routine that is hauntingly beautiful.
Tumblr media
With mental health being such a prevalent theme, Arthur clinging onto dancing as a coping mechanism or escape from the world backs up the analysis that he’s doing it to improve his mental health — or at least attempt to.
In any Batman rendition — comics, movies, TV shows, video games — Gotham is always on fire… literally. In Joker, we see a bright Gotham in the beginning, with normal big-city crimes happening: teenagers stealing things, muggings, etc. By the end of the film, Arthur has bred chaos in the streets, and we see the imagery of Gotham that has become so prevalent within the Batman universe. In both Arthur and Gotham’s descent into madness, there’s an arc that’s ever present: protesting the elite.
All around the country, protests have emerged to combat the elite. Most recently, climate change has brought criticism on the world’s elite members and their inability to make a change. In the past, police brutality has created protests in riots from victim’s families and their supporters, calling for change in law enforcement procedures. Countless marches have been held in response to several pieces of legislations passed (abortion laws, Planned Parenthood budget cuts, LGBTQ+ rights).
“Kill The Rich” is a headline that pops up time and time again throughout the film, feeding into this “protest the elite” arc. Arthur guns down three rich men in the subway following their harassment of a woman and a physical altercation between himself and the men. This sparks a movement within Gotham that empowers Arthur and makes him feel noticed, something he’d never experienced in his life before. Citizens of Gotham supporting this movement don clown masks to imitate the suspect, aka, Arthur.
Joker has faced its fair share of backlash. Stephanie Zacharek of Time Magazine took no prisoners in her review, stating that Joker, “lionizes and glamorizes Arthur even as it shakes its head, faux-sorrowfully, over his violent behavior.” Other reviews have had similar opinions. In 2012, a mass shooting broke out at a Colorado movie theatre during The Dark Knight Rises premiere. The assailant fatally shot 12 people. Family members of the slain victims wrote a letter to Warner Bros. expressing their concerns.
Sandy Phillips, mother to 24-year-old victim Jessica Ghawi, told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don't need to see a picture of [the gunman]; I just need to see a Joker promo and I see a picture of the killer … My worry is that one person who may be out there — and who knows if it is just one — who is on the edge, who is wanting to be a mass shooter, may be encouraged by this movie. And that terrifies me.”
In what is perhaps its most iconic scene, Arthur eccentrically dances down the stairs that we see him trudge up throughout the film. This is also the first time we see him in that iconic purple suit, green hair, and a full face of makeup. He is dancing to Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll Part Two,” which has earned the film more backlash. Gary Glitter is a convicted pedophile currently serving a 16-year prison sentence. According to CNBC, Glitter is allegedly slated to receive royalties from the use of his song in the movie.
Tumblr media
People took to Twitter to post their opinions about the film. One user tweeted, “#JokerMovie was the most brutal, uncomfortable and tense movie experience I’ve had in a long time. Joaquin Phoenix is chilling. The film was spot on and did everything it should have for a character like the Joker.”
Another user tweeted, “Outstandingly Disturbing. Prolific. Necessary Blessing to Modern Cinema.”
As much as I enjoyed the film’s premise, production, and Phoenix’s performance, I do think there are some troubling themes that need to be brought up. Arthur often justifies his heinous actions by stating “they deserved it” and using the defense that society treats “people like him” like “trash” so, they should all die. He feeds into the “Kill The Rich” movement that he involuntarily created in the subway when he committed what we presume to be his first murder(s).
Though I know the concept behind the Joker character, I can see how this can be construed as glorifying gun violence. However, we can’t have the Gotham supervillain without violence and guns. It’s an accurate representation of the character, and it’s unfortunate that it parallels a lot of what’s going on in the world today.
The Joker is also painted to incite pity within viewers, which a lot of times, it does --- or at least attempts to. This is classic Joker behavior. In Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s comic Mad Love, readers meet Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. She gets assigned to none other than --- you guessed it --- the Joker. Though this woman is highly educated (we won’t talk about the things she did to get that education), the Joker still manipulates her and convinces her to not only help him escape Arkham, but become his partner-in-crime as well; Harleen Quinzel is no more and Harley Quinn is born.
She pities him and his situation, and he spins his tale of woe so expertly that she has the wool pulled over her eyes. Throughout the comic --- and the general timeline for Joker and Harley --- Joker mercilessly abuses Harley, from pushing her out a window to not noticing she was gone for six months. He is a cruel, manipulative psychopath that nobody should follow in the footsteps of; however, he’s good at his job, and Joker showcases that, however controversial and uncomfortable it may be.
Joker is rated R for a reason; not only are there a few F-bombs, the violence is staggering. However, when dealing with a character that is known for inciting violence and not caring about the consequences, tough scenes are necessary. Phillips didn’t shy away from blood and intensity in his murder scenes, and Phoenix went all in when it came to brutality. Personally, (spoiler!) I never really wanted to see Robert De Niro’s brains blown out the back of his skull, but you can’t have the Joker without some blood.
Tumblr media
And finally, while the troubled citizens looking for a leader are terrorizing Gotham following Arthur’s murder of Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) on live television, our hero’s story starts. Thomas and Martha Wayne are gunned down in an alley outside a theatre by a rogue thug and Joker fan, and young Bruce Wayne begins his famous story.
Joker was original in concept and plot, but had just enough callbacks to the comics to make it permissible. The atmosphere in the full theatre I was in was palpable. There were chuckles and titters here and there when Arthur would make a funny joke, or everyone was just laughing off the tension of the moment. There were also audible gasps and groans when things got especially rough (such as the aforementioned Robert De Niro scene). Joker did exactly what the real Joker would have wanted: it incited a reaction out of people.
I had low expectations going into the movie because, as someone who grew up reading Batman and loving to hate the Joker, I was afraid my favorite complex villain was going to get ruined (looking at you, Jared Leto). I was pleasantly surprised by Phoenix’s performance and Phillips’ take on Mista J, and it was a refreshing performance that was a polar opposite from the late Heath Ledger’s, but equally as convincing and chilling.
An Oscar seems to be on the horizon for both Phillips and Phoenix for Joker. The film is raunchy and tense, and I didn’t know I could hold my breath for two hours. It’s exactly what a Joker movie should be, and I’d encourage anyone to go watch it.

What I find interesting is that Shiro and Dick Grayson have a fair bit in common personality wise. They both faced tragedy, so you would think that they would be angsty badasses. But, nope. They are charismatic, sweet guys, who are also total badasses. Although, Dick is more outgoing and is a playboy.
Well, I shouldn’t have been surprised by the whole DC universe personality of Shiro, and the others. Seriously given that both JDS and Lauren worked heavily with Bruce Timm and on a number of DC properties, I’m pretty sure some of that rubbed off on the characters.
Shiro has the look of Jason Todd, pre-52, with the white streak, and the fact that he can be reckless when angry about something. But he’s also got Dick’s more upbeat personality and his willingness to mentor those that are younger than him and be a natural leader.
Keith on the other hand, strong mix of Jason, Damian and Tim. He has the mix of Jason’s attitude with Damian’s weird thinks he can do anything and love of animals. Physically he reminds me a lot of Tim, very acrobatic like Dick but shorter than him. Also he wears red like the robins, where as Shiro is in Black like Batman and Dick.
Lance very well could be an easy mix of Wally and Roy, while Hunk is more Beast Boy meets Starfire. And Pidge…possibly Cyborg and Donna Troy. Allura could be a young Wonder Woman with some hint of Artemis. Dick and Shiro share a lot of personality, and they both have PTSD issues over some serious situations that they’ve been in. One could also argue that both were, er, violated in personal ways as well. Funny the one that is the angsty badass is the young one that while bad things happen to them, they are also the one that tends to put themselves in the situations themselves. See Keith taking off and Jason doing the same.
The more I”m thinking about it the more I wonder if when this story was written were they thinking about DC characters?

Holy nostalgia, Batman!

Ah, Batman...campy, goofy, 1966 Batman...
A confession: I am not old enough to have seen Batman in its original run, but I grew up watching it in syndication. I fondly remember it feeling like a comic book with all the BAMs, POWs, CRASHes, and of course ZOWIEs during the fight scenes. Then I hit my teens and early 20s and realized how stupid it was.
Maybe it’s due to hitting my X0s that I can start seeing what they writers and actors were going for. Series creator William Dozier (who also was the narrator for the series) said he never read the comic before being assigned by 20th Century Fox to make a Batman series (something that a lot of the creative staff for DC movies have in common. I’m looking at you Burton, you Donner, and especially YOU, Schumacher!), but he realized that if he wanted to make a series that would appeal to kids as well as parents, he needed to go completely over-the-top!
And over-the-top it is! The problem was that this was what the comic was steering away from at the time and toward a tone that was more...if not grim then at least more serious. Unfortunately, the series set the tone for what Batman would look like on screen until 1989 (including Casey Casem’s Robin parroting Burt Ward’s “holy” addiction in Superfriends), and the characters were what people thought of when thinking of Batman, the Joker, and the rest until Bruce Timm and Paul Dini redefined Batman’s entire feel in 1992 (only to have Joel Schumacher nearly kill it in 1997)
Don’t believe me?  Take a look at this remixed version of Batman & Robin

But this isn’t about what Batman became, but what Batman was.
For all the jokes about Adam West’s “square Batman”, the fact that West was the only Batman with a beer-gut, the endless “Holy” exclamations, the fact that Cesar Romero would do anything to be the Joker except shave, I do still enjoy the charm of the show, although there are a few glaring issues I have (and most involve the women of the show)
Let’s start with “Aunt Harriet”. First off, both Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are orphans. Neither have any family that could take them in (hence why Alfred raised Bruce and Bruce raised Dick after their parents’ deaths), so whose aunt is she supposed to be? Plus, she has free reign of the manor (though apparently she doesn’t enter Bruce’s study). Do you mean to tell me she has never heard the Bat-phone going off and wondered why Bruce had a special phone that beeps?
Then we have Barbara Gordon, AKA Bargirl. Now, I get that Gordon doesn’t know his daughter wears purple tights and fights crime, but Bruce Wayne is supposed to be the “World’s Greatest Detective” and even he doesn’t know who Batgirl is?!
Finally we have Catwoman, who (if you count the movie that takes place in the same reality as the series) was played by three different actresses and no explanation was given.
And now we have the biggest issue I have (that doesn’t involve the women in the show). Batman, Commissioner Gordon, and Chief O’Hara all refer to the GCPD as “the finest police force in the world” (yes, they may be a bit biased). However, Batman repeatedly tells Gordon and O’Hara to keep the cops out of his way. Moreover, when the police are involved, they come off as incompetent (”Sorry we’re late Batman...we took a wrong turn”). This level of idiocy won’t be seen again until 2012 when Gordon leads the entire goddamn GCPD into the sewers! If the GCPD is the finest in the world, the rest of the world must be Keystone!
