The Past - Zuko

Pairing - Zuko x reader

“Remember when you were bald?” You said through a cough, giving Zuko a sideways glance with a little smirk on your face.

“Oh come on!” Zuko exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air. “What the heck did I ever do to you, y/n? Stop making fun of my bald self.” He crossed his arms and pouted and you just giggled to yourself as Toph and Sokka were holding back laughter.

“You have to admit it’s a little funny, Zuko.”

“It’s not!”

You walked over to Zuko and put your arm around him. “Okay, okay, it’s not that funny.”

“Thank you!” Zuko turned away from you still pouting and the campfire you were around with the others went silent.

Until you spoke up, of course.

“Remember when all you wanted to do was capture the Avatar.” Everyone started laughing and Zuko’s face went as red as a tomato. It definitely didn't help that Aang, you know, the literal Avatar, was sitting right there.

Sure, Zuko was happy that the gaang took him in, but it was definitely a little embarrassing that he had once made it his whole life and every waking moment to capture him.

“I have to capture the Avatar and restore my honor.” You said in a mocking dramatic voice.

Sokka and Toph were completely out of breath laughing while Aang and Katara were trying not to laugh in respect of Zuko.

“Okay, y/n.” Zuko turned to you, his face flushing a dark crimson. “I'm serious. Stop.”

“Zuko,” you walked over to him and tucked his long hair behind his ear. “You know I'm just playing. Sure, capturing the Avatar was definitely number one on your list, but you were still just a kid.” You rubbed his arm and Zuko smiled at you.

Zuko didn't know if he could live without you or his uncle. You were both there for him through thick and thin since he was banished from the fire nation. Heck, you even decided to go back to the fire nation with him after that awful crisis in Ba Sing Se. No matter what, you were always there for him.

“Remember when we would train on the boat?” You smiled.

Everyone turned to the both of you, intrigued.

You just smiled and hugged Zuko’s arm. “You’ve always had the potential to be a great fire bender. Who cares if your sister was some prodigy since she was born? You've always put in the work, making you that much better.”

“Stop,” Zuko said with a bright red face, hugging you to him. “If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be as good as I am.”

“Oh, come on, Zuko! I'm not that good.”

“YES YOU ARE!” You laughed at Zuko’s sudden outburst.

“Yeah, y/n!” Aang butt in, beaming at you. “You’re not only one of the best fire benders I’ve ever met, but also the nicest. No offense Zuko.”

“None taken.”

“You guys are a riot.” You said with a joking eye roll, standing up to stretch your legs.

Zuko stood up with you and wrapped his arm around you, looking at the full moon.

“You know,” Aang said, standing up and walking over to the two of you. “If it wasn't for the both of you hating my guts for that period of time, I honestly don't think that I would have any firebending teacher.”

You and Zuko smiled at Aang, pulling him in for a little group hug. Aang smiled and ran back to the rest of the group and you turned to Zuko and pulled him into his own hug, kissing the crook of his neck. “I'm so proud of you.” You whispered and looked at his bright yellow eyes with small tears of your own.

“I'm proud of you too.” He leaned down to you and gave you a small, but loving kiss on the lips before the two of you cuddled in each other’s arms, watching the clouds cover the moon.

Peter had a rough time in the weeks and months that followed the final defeat of Thanos in the ruins of the Compound. Thrust back into life, only to be forced to fight for the lives of the entire universe for the second time at only sixteen-years-old, and then to be told that his last living relative died in a crash during his five year absence did wonders for his psyche.

He developed a nasty form of separation anxiety toward his mentor-turned-adoptive-father -- not that Tony fared much better himself -- and his therapist had said it was a side effect of PTSD and that it would get better over time.

OR

A small field trip fic to SI where Tony has been out of the country for a few weeks, and Peter isn't handling it well.

Camilo Analysis

Bruh, who even is Camilo? He is arguably the Madrigal we get the least real characterization for, other than Teenage Boy, which is a very broad category of person. So as per usual, it helps me to get my thoughts in order if I write this stuff down.

First, Mirabel introduces Camilo through song and we right of way see him shapeshift into a young mother so he can sooth her baby while she takes a nap. That's actually a really great way to imply several things about his character (oh my god guys, this movie is so well written).

Thoughtful enough to offer a new mom a chance to rest

Comfortable caring for infants (probs helped care for Antonio?)

More patient than I would have thought, because taking care of a baby while the mother rests is not a quick and easy favor

Sort of implies that he likes kids

Then Mirabel sings he "won't stop until he makes you smile today" while he turns into multiple people and doing goofy stuff. Everybody already knows he's an entertainer at heart but I gotta add it to the list anyways.

5. Likes making people laugh

6. Plays around with his gift a lot

Moving on to Antonio's party, he's the guy greeting all the villagers by name, and he changes his energy to match each person.

7. Knows a lot of the villagers

8. Charming and personable

9. Respects his elders (kisses the old woman on the cheek)

He jokes around with Antonio, probably in an attempt to soothe his nerves, and teases his Pa. This reinforces points one, four, five and six. If this was a different list, I would talk about what it means that Camilo is clearly comfortable teasing his father, despite the seemingly stern reaction Félix has, but I digress.

He stands with Julieta while Antonio and Mirabel walk to the door, giving birth to a lot headcanons about them being especially close, and I'm going to roll with it.

10. Of his siblings, he's closest to Julieta.

Then he's very excited for Antonio as he discovers his room, it's actually the happiest we see him in the movie (other than perhaps when he's dancing in We Don't Talk About Bruno). So:

Plot happens, fast forward to breakfast when he pretends to be Dolores so he can get double the food. Then teases Isabela about Mariano, something he does a lot in the movie.

Fast forward some more, all the way to We Don't Talk About Bruno. He absolutely kills it, and clearly enjoys the whole production. If you're like me and you headcanon that the musical numbers happen in universe then we can conclude:

15. Probably hasn't thought through the consequences of telling everybody his Tío is a seven foot tall boogy man that feasts on screams. Which is very normal for a fifteen year old boy.

Teases Isabela about Mariano again. More plot happens. Time For Dinner. Dolores gossips to him as soon as she can, then he immediately gossips to his Pá. When Félix accidentally spits his drink onto Mariano, Camilo has to hold in a laugh. It's possible he doesn't really like Mariano, he keeps making jokes about the guy, at the very least he doesn't take him seriously. I wonder if he's the sort of guy that prefers to hang out with women?

16. Close to his sister.

17. Close to his father.

18. Shapeshifts reflexively/accidentally.

More plot. We see him try to soothe his mother.

19. Takes care of his Má. Pepa is literally unable to hide her emotions, so it would make sense that, through no real fault of her own, the kids slowly learn to take care of her as they grow up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and all. On the flip side, the fact that sun beams come out whenever they get home from school or learn a new skill probs means the kids can never doubt that Pepa loves them. Plus, she likely has the easiest time transitioning from a parent-child relationship to a parent-adult offspring relationship of all the adults. So Camilo might be growing closer to his Má as he gets closer to adulthood.

The longer the plot goes on the less we see him. He's clearly frustrated with his gift glitching on him, but that doesn't really tell me much. It's a situation that would frustrate anyone and they don't show us how he handles those negative emotions. They also don't show us how he handles hearing the end of Mirabel's and Abuela's argument. Rude. They do show us him leaping to the candle's aid while the house crashes down around him so clearly:

20. Sees the Miracle as more important than his own safety.

The house falls, the candle goes out, in the background we hear him first remark on his gift being gone, then wonder how this will effect his little brother. We already know he enjoys using his gift, I can theorize he's made Being a Shapeshifter an important part of his identity, but all we have that's concrete is:

21: He doesn't just enjoy his gift, it is important to him.

22. Empathetic.

Mirabel runs off, resolution happens, Mirabel comes back. He is the one who cuts through the reunion to point out their house is gone, and even gets a little exasperated when he catches a bit of flack from Félix.

23. Not an optimist. Might be a pessimist, but most likely just not particularly sentimental.

For the rest of the scene he exists in a state of confusion. The hits start coming and they don't stop coming. Apparently Tío Bruno is just suddenly back now? And it kind of seems like half the family isn't surprised or asking any questions?! There's not a lot of conclusions I can draw from him being shocked and confused that Bruno just sort of appeared out of nowhere, I think most people would be. And unlike the parents or the older cousins, he doesn't have enough memories from when Bruno was around to be swept up in the joy of seeing him again. His reaction is relatable and endearing, but not very revealing.

The last character moment we get is when he tries to twirl the shovel around all fancy, almost drops it, then checks to make sure Mirabel wasn't watching. It reinforces things already mentioned, like him being showy, and wanting to entertain those around him, but also:

24. Wants to be seen as cool. Another very normal trait for a teenage boy.

It is interesting that the first person he looks at is Mirabel, I can't help but wonder if that would have been the case at the beginning of the movie. There's room for interpretation there, but regardless, by the end of the movie:

Abby - i liked abby a lot. she was flawed and vulnerable and liked buck. she helped him mature and become a little more thoughtful, and i think let him figure out how much he wanted to be in a real relationship and have all those romantic experiences (hot air balloon date i'll always regret your premature murder). yeah she left him in an awful way and didn't bother to apologize and i hated her for THAT but during the relationship? nah fam i was rooting for those crazy kids

Ali - hell i REALLY liked Ali. smart, sassy, fun, also just liked buck and enjoyed his company. i didn't like her abrupt exit from the show but it's perfectly valid for someone to say "i can't handle the danger you're in and this won't end well for either of us if we try"

natalia - i LIKED her at first. sure she was a little judgy about all his crazy ass shenanigans but uh... who tf wouldn't be? she wasn't judging him as a person, just being like "bruh wtf have you gotten yourself in to?" they didn't do a lot to flesh out her character because... well, see: kristen reidel and then this season tim had to dump her character bc she didn't want to come back (valid of her tbh)

and then kristen reidel needed a self-insert, tried to redeem her with no actual work done on selling it, made her spineless, then turned her back into an awful unethical reporter when she needed to get rid of her, and worse, made her BORING AS FUCK doing it AND didn't accomplish any narrative purpose with it? nah fuck that shit.

look to be honest, i’ve always been against putting the “labels”/ shoving into the “tropes” when it comes to the CN otoge characters i’ve come to know. because unlike the JP otome games the audience here is relatively more familiar with - the CN writers are of a completely different genre and caliber. of course, it differs from game to game and character to character, but the writers tend to instill so much depth as well as multifaceted characteristics into their characters - that when you shove a character into a trope, it just says that you’re being lazy as a consumer and do not want to do the work to know a character. cause believe me, if you did, you wouldn’t be doing that LOL. and it’s a shame really cause you don’t even know what you’re missing out on ∠( ᐛ 」∠)_

now coming to Victor specifically– putting my personal bitterness aside lmao, i can see why the audience who are eager for “tropes” would lean toward the “daddy” label. yes, he is in the older men group, and the most mature and sensible one among the bunch (god knows how despite the predicaments he’s constantly being thrown into ;-;), the mentor character, has the commanding presence to have all eyes on him the second he walks into a room without even intending so, someone who takes care of everything and prefers to shoulder all burdens on his own and all— but bruh, if you know this man, you’d know what a big “three-year-old” kid he really is lmfao. yes, he’s very fond of sacrificing himself for the greater good, and at the same time he’d literally turn the universe upside down for you, he’d be your safest haven and anchor even when you have no one to fall back on, he’d cater to your every little emotion that you yourself don’t even know about, he’d also learn to cook on the earthen stove for you, make wooden tables and chairs himself to give you just one romantic evening, the “show-don’t-tell” is so big with him— but he’s also someone who’d be roughish like no one else, drink half your cola while you’re in the restroom cause you ate half his popcorn while he was away lmao, be in the search for the perfect opportunity to “get back” at you for every big to little pranks you’ve ever pulled on him LOL, will always be ready to be your big kitty and let you “pet his belly” however you want to, just like he’d never hesitate if you lend him your shoulder to lean on and be true to his vulnerable self.

BRUH. I LOVED IT??? FUCK YEAH, THAT WAS AMAZING.

I really wonder how all those annoying Anons who filled my inbox with garbage back in 2019 are feeling right now, because just in this one episode, KyoAni has fixed literally every defect that I had pointed out in S1. The amount of improvement is just surreal.

First of all, the storytelling this season. The freaking storytelling. You can tell the difference between works that a studio actually places their bets on and the ones they don’t by the amount of effort that the animation team puts into the flow of each episode. S1 was an ungodly mix of slow pace that suddenly went too fast at punctual moments without any warning, bad humor, boring tone, missing information, inconsistencies and shit that the animators pulled out of their asses to cover up plot holes. This one, though? Smooth as a feather. Full of well-thought details. Scenes and events connecting properly with one another. Flashbacks very nicely timed. It was entirely an anime-original episode, 90% non-canon content, yet there’s canon info at every single second. I love the little things, such as the way that we’re led to think that the MVP of the sports event is going to be Rika and the show makes use of every possible hint that it’s going to be her, until the very last second, where it turns out that it’s Ryouhei. Awesome screenplay right there. This episode was meticulously planned and it shows.

The changes in visual. The upgrade in the artstyle is the most easily noticeable thing about the animation of this season, but the quality is a million times better too. The characters also have a lot more facial expression now. I once talked about Morimoto Chinatsu’s incredible talent for character design and the way that she goes as far as giving not just different hair and eyes, but also different eyelashes, eyebrows, ears, noses, mouths, chins, jawlines and even fucking wrists to every single character that she drew for the novel. And seeing S1 doing the opposite and giving every character a base face was just... no. So now that there’s been a turnaround and the characters externally show what they’re feeling and thinking, following their journey is a whole new experience. That moment when the team stares at Minato after he answers Masaki’s question is pure character study right there. And it’s probably the most blatant example of this season’s improvement, given that we never had this in the previous one. I also love how the expressions are not just there, they’re on-point. On par with what the novel tells us about them. My biggest peeve with S1 was that I’d look at these kids and a voice at the back of my head would go “who the fuck are you people”. Those weren’t the characters I knew. They didn’t look like them and didn’t act like them. But now I recognize them. These are the kids I read about. They finally feel like themselves.

The symbolism of the series. By God, so many treats in this episode in that regard. The yesterday-today-tomorrow blossom splashed with watercolor in the team’s theme colors. The intimist approach of the shots. The way that Minato and Shuu’s positions oppose each other on-screen. The lighting, the colors, the smear filter… literally everything is more vivid and lively. One of the things I recall commenting about S1 is that it didn’t feel like a KyoAni anime because KyoAni’s works are very immersion-based. You can feel yourself being inside that world, together with the characters. But I couldn’t feel that from Tsurune’s first season at all. With this one, I was able to dive head-first into it. It was absolutely magical. I also love that the leaves that fly out of the targets whenever the characters hit now don’t look so obviously like CGI.

Personality traits. They’re fucking everywhere. Like I said, this was entirely an anime-original episode, yet there’s canon info at every single second. Even better: information that clearly contradicts S1 but that matches the novel. Seiya being a smartass little shit full of wit instead of a Minato-obsessed yandere. Kaito being a team-driven hardworker instead of an obnoxious asshole who wants nothing but victory. Ryouhei actually acting upon his lack of experience in archery to catch up to everyone. Nanao being charismatic and having screen-time of his own instead of being pushed to the background while all his personality and lines are used on Seiya. Minato expressing his thoughts and feelings instead of just being an emotionless doormat who never really does anything. We learned more about the characters in just these 20 minutes than the entirety of the first season. It feels like KyoAni has finally taken a step back to look at the material they had in their hands and truly took in what the novel was about and what each character had going on for them. Even the girls’ team was fleshed out in this one, which was honestly a great surprise. I think we’ve gotten from this episode all the little things we didn’t get from S1, such as the way Noa and Yuuna are fangirls of Rika. The way Nanao shines better as support than as main even though he’s so conspicuous. The fact that Kaito is good at soccer and Seiya loves soccer tactics. The way Ryouhei, who doesn’t know much about archery, is used as the eyes of the viewers, and how unpretentiously the lessons he is taught are presented to us as something that we should also keep in mind (for example, that the target is the archer and the archer is the target, and when you’re at the stage of the draw, you’re aiming at your very own self). And the way that Minato is something in this season. We finally see the inner machinations of his mind here aside from his struggles with target panic.

Lastly (and what I consider to be most important) is that the roles of each character and their relationships with one another seem to be in tune with the novel now. Well, okay, almost. Seiya is still being weird around Masaki, but I guess that’s because it’d be too sudden if Seiya started acting the way he acts in canon (y’know, like a normal fucking person). However, the difference is that the narrative is clearly pushing towards Masaki instead of Seiya now, as it should be. Kaito, Nanao and Ryouhei, who used to be just in the background most of the time in S1 are now set perfectly into their own functions and you can tell that they do exist for reasons other than just fill up the team positions. Nanao also seems to be his own person now instead of living through Kaito. Seiya is being shown looking after the whole club, as the competent club president that he is, instead of just Minato. Minato now has proper reactions to everything and doesn’t just completely ignore when Seiya is being a little shit. Masaki is now acting like a true mentor and already in the first episode we have him giving more advice to the boys than the entirety of the first season. But more than anything else, what caught my attention was Shuu. S1 did him really dirty by giving him scary jealous rival vibes and not expanding at all on his relationship with Minato. As I said before, they’re not your usual sports anime rival duo. They really respect and admire each other, are jealous of each other to some extent, but they’re friends first and foremost. They’re also opposites of one another in every way. We didn’t get any of this in S1, and now we’re getting literally all of it at once. What a fucking blessing.

Honestly, the only things I’m concerned about in this season are 1) Kaito and Seiya’s relationship. It’s probably too late to mend it now and make it the way it is in canon, and it also seems the animators are just not interested in doing that, which kinda hurts, but I guess we can’t have it all. And 2) Minato and Masaki’s relationship. I’m pretty sure that we’re not gonna get the same amount of content for them as there is in the novel, and in the off-chance that we do, it’s just not gonna have the same approach or the same quality. Minato and Masaki are mirrors of each other but the anime vehemently refuses to acknowledge this for some reason. They try to treat Masaki as a completely separate entity that has absolutely nothing in common with Minato despite all of the mystic, supernatural and fate-oriented themes that their connection is centered around and the fact that they’ve gone through very similar experiences and hardships in doing archery. But I’d rather believe that it’s a little too early to make a judgement and wait. Truth remains that the characters and their relationships in the anime will never be nearly as good as they are in the original work no matter how hard they try, so I’m just gonna take what I can get.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on this episode. It was one of the very rare instances where I completely approve of anime-original content in an adaptation.

Was feelin’ down for obvious reasons — and sore after my procedure — but my cousin is in town and I’ve not seen her in years. Met her daughter (10) for first time. Sweetest kid. She kept having me play games on her tablet with her, talked to me the. entire. time. So much I could barely even talk to my cousin. 😂 Took my hand to cross the street. Gave me half a dozen hugs at least. Kept leaning her head on me at lunch.

And as I was leaving even after the final hug she yelled “Leigh!” and came running across the parking lot for one more hug.

My grinch heart just grew three sizes bruh. 🥺💜

P.S. When she needed to open a surprise Disney toy box thingy she got while we were out she asked her ma, “Can Leigh come sit with me in the back of the SUV as I open it? I want her to see what I got!” …so I had to crawl my ass up into that SUV trunk (bashed my head btw 🙃) as we all gathered round for the big reveal — but turns out she got her fave / one she was hoping for, the little turtle from Finding Nemo (Squirt)! 🙌😂

You woke up with a lump in your stomach at around 8:23 in the morning. You had been trying to breathe in and out for about 15 minutes trying to get your anxiety out and maybe feel a little better. It was a technique your boyfriend used with you on days like today.

You sighed, not able to get it out off your chest and turned to him.

He looked so peaceful, so relaxed, so... cute and adorable.

You wanted to wake him up and explain how you felt, how your anxiety were doing today, but you knew it wasn't a great idea. After all, it was only a little bit of anxiety and it would go away in a few minutes anyway. At least, that's what you hoped. You didn't dare disturb him just for that kind of thing. He had to rest after all the efforts he was doing for his work, for the videos he was making for the Stars and the meetings he had almost every day. He deserved the rest and the breaks.

You sighed again, then got up from the bed and put on a hoodie that was lying around. It belonged to your boyfriend. You loved wearing his clothes. They always made you feel good and comfortable in them, maybe it was for their warm or because they were a bit bigger in you, but you felt safe in those. You wanted to stay forever in his hoodies. It was like if he was hugging you. It screamed the word "comfort". You hid your hands in the sleeves of the oversized sweater and put them up to your nose. You smelled it and closed your eyes. His smell was so comforting and sweet. It always helped a little when you were having anxious days like this.

-Ok ok! he replied, getting up from the table and showing you his arms. I'm going to go make myself hotter than I already am, bro.

You chuckled a little and saw him leave for his room to get his gym bag and personal products.

You were now alone in the NSB kitchen. You sighed and relaxed your shoulders.

You opened the dish cupboard and saw the only clean glass on top of the cupboard. You sighed, climbed up on the counter and hung on to the cupboard to avoid falling. You picked up the glass and were about to go downstairs when a voice startled you.

You dropped the glass in surprise and turned back to the person who had just startled you.

-Ah fuck! you said. No, no, no, no, no!

Your anxiety had just escalated. You had just broken a glass and god knows how much every single glass counted in this house. There were only a few for the number of people who lived in the house. You felt bad for dropping it. Normally you would have felt guilty for a little while, but today it felt like this accident was going to ruin your and everyone's whole day..

Justin came up to you and held out his hand so you could get into his arms to avoid touching the floor covered in glass.

-Are you okay, babe? You didn't hurt yourself, did you?

-I'm fine, but I broke a glass. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I'll clean up the mess, don't worry.

Justin set you down a little further on the floor and looked you in the eye.

-Hey, it's okay, we have a broom, we'll pick it up, don't worry. We've got plenty of other glasses and it's okay if you break one. Kane has already broken several and we're not angry with him, we know it's an accident. I caught you by surprise, too, sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.

You felt a little bit better. He always found the right words, always made you feel better and always calmed you down when you started to feel too anxious like this.

While scrolling, one picked your eyes: a text message from your parents who had called you the day before, delivered with a dozens of text messages.

You and your parents were never very close. The comments they made to you were either always hurtful or toxic positivity. Sometimes, just the fact that you were getting notifications from them made you shiver with anxiety. You didn't know what they were going to say to you, if they were ever going to apologize for their behavior, if they were going to ask you to move back home, if they were going to insult you..

-Babe, are you okay? I asked you a question! said your bf quickly

-Oh, uh… Yeah, I was in my thoughts. Sorry.

Justin sighed, then started the car:

-That's okay. Where do you want to eat?

-It doesn't matter where, I'm not too hungry anyways.

He nodded and put his hand on your thigh.

-You seem out of it, love. Are you sure everything's okay?

-Yeah, don't worry.

After about ten minutes, you and Justin had arrived at the breakfast spot.

-We're here, baby.

-Oh, okay. Can I stay here? I'm comfortable in your car.

-Sure. What do you want?

You weren't very hungry due to your anxiety, but you knew you had to have something in your belly, so you decided to have a pancake, which was one of your favorite meals and one of your go-to foods when you weren't too hungry. They were easy to eat, not too sweet, just perfect.

You gave Phan a small smile and closed your eyes. A few seconds later, a sound was heard throughout your boyfriend's car. You sighed and opened your eyes to see who dared to disturb your precious rest.

Your parents.

You felt a lump inside you getting bigger and bigger. You knew you had to answer, you felt an obligation to do so. You'd been living with Justin and his best friends for a few weeks now and let's just say it only made your parents more aggressive. You wanted to block them, but you knew that if you did, you would take a lot of hate from them. You were so tired of being criticized from morning till night, of being put down and of always having to do your best because you were afraid that you might have a big impact on it in the future.

You were afraid of the future. You still didn't know what you wanted to do, you were going to college following your passions, but even still… You didn't know if you were going to be that interested to do this for the rest of your life.

You felt the vibrations of your anxiety and your phone mixing together. Without thinking, you pressed the "pick up" button and took a breath.

"Come on Y/N, maybe they'll apologize this time!"

You still had hope that they would. That they would apologize to you after your 19 years of existence. You were now 20 and let's say on your birthday, they just told you that you had to find a new home since you were starting to become delinquent and they didn't want to have you in their projects and in what they were doing. In truth, you were only starting to be friends with Regie's friends and starting to get happy without them.

-Hello? you answer with a weak voice

-Y/N!! Finally! You finally pick up the god damn phone! What's happening?! Are you deaf now? Are you ignoring us again? You didn't heard the ringtone?

You sighed:

-I-I was just being busy, sorry.

Your mother sighed loud enough for you to hear from miles away:

-Busy doing what?! You don't have a job and your boyfriend surely doesn't take up all your time, does he?

You shrug:

-I'm busy doing my college work and being with my friends. We're really close them and I.

-Your friends? Your boyfriend's friends are friends with you? Honey, you deserve better. You know they are bad influences, right? They don't have jobs (it literally hurts me to write this) and all they do is shoot videos on the internet and that's it! You're going to end up like them, out of work!!

You breathed in, hoping to calm down:

-Don't talk about them like that, it's their job and they do it super well. Their job is super hard and exhausting. They have a tons of meetings and projects they need to do. And I'm so proud of them because they manage their time to do it at the perfection. They've been helping me a lot in the last few weeks and I'm really thankful for that.

Your mother sighed again.

-Are you really defending them? My darling, don't be like them! You'll end up to jail, you won't have a real job and you'll do nothing! Don't come crying to your parents when you're poor! We won't help you!!

-Stop, I work hard and-

She interrupted you and began to shout through her phone. Tears began to well up, letting your anxiety do the same.

They were never going to apologize.

-No! You procrastinate all the fucking time, you do nothing but shit, you're just like your boyfriend: you do everything to have things easy. You don't even work! Take a lesson from us! Are we persistent? Yes! We are not fucking like you! We work hard while you... Y/N, god damn! You live with boys, instead of us and you dare to say that we treat you badly?! We could have thrown you out, but we kept you!

-You literally told me to leave as soon as I turned 19.

-You're disappointing me. You know nothing about your future life and you're going to fail miserably! You're only thinking about yourself. Not even about us! We were right to let you go at 19. I swear, Y/N, you're going to regret this one day.

You put your phone away and looked out the window.

"Come on, Justin, hurry up.."

You felt tears coming out of your eyes, falling down your cheeks, you could hardly control yourself, you knew what was going to happen. You closed your eyes and tried to breath in and out.

"Your mother is right: you've been in college for one year and you still haven't gotten a good grade!"

"You're just a coward… You don't do anything during the day, all you do is eat and be with your boyfriend"

"The boys probably don't even like you"

You curled up into a ball and kept hearing your mother's voice as she continued to insult you.

Suddenly, the door opened at last. Justin smiled, then put the bags on the back seats. He exclaimed:

-Sorry for the wait, a Karen was there. She was-Hey, hey, what's up? What's up? Are you okay?

-It's my parents, you whispered soflty

Justin knew about your parents. Even though they disparaged him, he still liked you. He knew how toxic they could be and you… You were anything but like them.

You tried to formulate a sentence, but failed. It broke Justin's heart to see you like this.

-Can I touch your hands? he asked

You nodded slowly. You liked it when he asked you before he did anything. He always wanted you to feel comfortable in the relationship.

He took your hands and made circles on them with his fingers, something you appreciated because it always helped you. He took your phone and sighed.

-Respectfully, go fuck yourself. You've been insulting her since she was born. Let her go, she's decided to make a life with me and the guys, let her go. She's in good hands with us. Stop fucking calling or texting.

Then he hung up and blocked the number.

-They'll never bother us again and if they do, me and the boys will start to get involved.

He sighed and gave you a hug.

-Hug me as much as you want, okay? You're going to be okay. I know it's not easy. Give me all your anxiety, I'll absorb it. You're in security in my arms.

You squeeze him a little tighter.

-Inhale, 3…2…1… Exhale…3…2…1…

You did this exercise a few times and started to feel a bit more relaxed.

-You are so not what your parents told you, babe. You are so much more than that: you are persistent, hardworking, so passionate about everything you do, you are so smart and so kind and so caring! I could never name all of your qualities, but know you are worth so much to me and the boys, baby… We love you so god damn much. Even the Stars love you. You're like our little sister.

He stroked the top of your head:

-Your anxiety is lying to you, my love. Don't listen to it. It's trying to make you think your parents are right. Focus on my voice and only mine.

He was so gentle with you. For the next fifteen minutes, he continued to comfort you and make you feel better.

-You did so good. I'm so fucking proud of you, my love. You are so strong. I knew you could do it!

He kissed the top of your head.

-How are you feeling right now?

-A little better. But.. Can we go home and watch something? I would like to cuddle you.

JP nodded:

-You don't have to ask me twice.

You smiled. Justin always managed to make you smile and feel better. You couldn't ask for a better boyfriend.

OSCAR THE ROACH IS DEAF?

So this began with a thing where a friend in a non-English side of the world told me that her local copy of Quest for Paradise has a bit where a character teaches Geronimo Italian sign language because said character is deaf

I looked through the Internet Archive’s French copy of Quest for Paradise because it had it AND:

OSCAR IS DEAF AND THE ONLY REASON HE’S BEEN ABLE TO TALK TO EVERYONE NORMALLY IS BECAUSE HE READS LIPS WHEN SOMEONE TALKS TO HIM AND TAUGHT HIMSELF HOW TO TALK

HERE’S THE TRANSLATION OF THE EXCERPT:

In the evening, we stopped to rest. Oscar lit a fire... put up the tent... and offered us a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

While I was sipping it... I found a crystal key: strange strange!

Then I congratulated Oscar: "My friend, you are great! You know how to do everything!

He smiled.

"If you want, I can even teach you something useful and fun: LSF!

I asked, intrigued: "LSF?"

Oscar proudly explained, "Yes, French sign language. It's a language like any other, like French, Italian or English! But it has something more: it's a natural language, visual, not spoken! I know this language because I was born deaf. I use it with those who know it. Otherwise, I learned to pronounce the words and even to... read lips!"

The next part of the chapter is six entire pages of demonstrations for LSF (a localization, which makes sense because the Italian copy has Oscar teach Italian Sign Language/Lingua dei Segni Italiana)

Now you unenlightened folk may be wondering “Oh cool! Does the English translation do the same thing and have Oscar teach ASL?” and to that I very sadly and indignantly say “NO”. They don’t even mention Oscar being deaf or anything that could possibly allude to it. Unless a game of charades counts.

Those two pages comprise the entire chapter titled “A Peaceful Night”.

Yes this is sad, yes this is pathetic, yes this is why the chapter is so short, yes Scholastic I am very disappointed in you, do better. If you dare say that learning about people who can’t hear is something too heavy for 6-10 kids then I WILL LEGIT SLAP YOU

So as far as beach episodes go: P4G > P3P > P5R

this one was a snoozefest, so let's touch on the important bits that stand out and then talk about Beige Boy and Solid Snake.

One, I have fully turned against Ryuji on the basis of his frequent and repeated disregard for Morgana as a part of the team and frankly as a full person. I am getting really teed the fuck off because for the last five hours or so of gametime, I have been watching Mona get more and more anxious about his place and about whether anyone on the team cares about him and his journey to the heart of Mementos

and at every fucking opportunity, Ryuji basically reinforces to Morgana yeah, you're not really one of the guys, you're not really part of the team, you're the mascot.

If I had agency in the world of this game, I would take Ryuji aside for a Fucking Discussion about this, because the fuse is lit and I am certain we are headed for a rift between Morgana and the team,a nd you know what? I'm on Morgana's side. He should be pissed, he should be hurt, because I'm hurt on his behalf just watching this unfold.

Fucking Ryuji, you are the bottom barrel of the Token Best Friends. Yosuke would never do me like this*. And if Junpei were here, he'd be Morgana's BFF, are you kidding.

yeah this is me going full kill bill sirens on Ryuji, sorry. i will slam dunk him into a fucking dumpster, i'm so angry with him for his MANY MANY fuck ups and, specifically, how he doesn't seem to learn or grow from any of them.

I think that's my beef with him. Like, P3P, Junpei did multiple big fuck ups, but he both apologized explicitly for them and also learned from them and became a better person for it. He was my ultimate ride or die. I romanced Akihiko but my true love was my broship with Junpei.

Yosuke also fucked up a lot and even went full Joker Mode once, but he also experienced one of the longest arcs of character growth in the game. I remember when I started to like him after being tepid on him for the first third of the game and how annoyed I was that he was growing as a person!!!! But he wound up being a fave.

I need Ryuji to get his shit together and start growing tf up bc I am real sick of his self-important bullshit and how he steps on Morgana's feelings. I am hoping whatever the upcoming blow-up with Morgana is leads him to wake tf up, but also I'm not holding my breath.

At least I have Ann and Yusuke.

Watched all of Digimon Frontier!

46 - The Digital World, Destroyed!? Lucemon's Dark Reign -I love how they subtley show LordKnightmon's doubts with his questions. No body language or accusations. Just questions. -NEFERTIMON!! I always thought her design was cool as hell. Nice to see her show up. -More nice character moments in the library. I especially liked Tomoki and Junpei's. Then again they're my faves haha -Almost looks like the Royal Knights are actually on the ropes, or at least tied with the boys… then BIG DEMON LIGHT ATTACK AAAAAAAAH -Aaaaaand the big bad is awake. Ruh-roh!! -Angler saves the kids on the barest remains of a track haha. Also they've… built a track to the moon!! Because of course!! DIGIMON!!

47 - The Royal Knights Fall And Then…!! -Lucemon: Hey guys go to. the moon and. um. kill those kids. then i'll give you the key. promise. :3 teeheehee -BABIES BABIES YES!! I hate babies IRL but Digimon babies are JUST ARGH SO GOOD I'm gonna adopt them all -Patamon meets Lopmon and Plotmon TT_TT aaaaaaahahahaah -Dynasmon flying to the moon with LordKnightmon on his back was another great shot. -I'll admit I was surprised when the Royal Knights were actually beaten by the kids! …but unsurprised when Lucemon shows up to nom nom their data haha. -BRUH. I swear to god if I had seen this as a kid when it first aired I would've 100% wanted to smoochalooch Lucemon Falldown Mode. Like Myotismon/Vamdemon back in the day. Now watching it as an adult I'm just like "eww go die loser dork" lol -Paradise Lost is such a goofy attack I LOVE IT!! dude straight up DESTROYS THE MOON THOUGH. three episodes left how the hell they gonna beat this guy. maybe they don't. maybe I unwittingly am watching the one Digimon series where the good guys fail and die haha… ha?

48 - Light and Darkness Become One! Koichi's Last Wish -TT_TT -JESUS it wasn't enough destroying ONE moon but THE OTHER TWO get caught up in the disaster jeeeez -the kids survived on a little meteor!! -magma flying through space?! AND IT MAKES THE INVISIBLE INK APPEAR that was so funny why not just have it IN THE BOOK lol -OMG IT'S SHIBUYA oh turns out Lucemon just wanted a vacation to Japan that's fine then -YES SPIRIT EVOLUTION LET'S GOOOOOO! like sorry but I've missed the other kids using their Spirits so bad haha -The fight begins and the kids get wiped but… Koichi intervenes, protects them… and… -OH MY GOOOOOOD SUSANOOMON!!!!! I wondered earlier like when we first got Hyper Spirit Evolution if they were gonna join at some point AND THEY DID OH YEAH LET'S GO that bit was very good haha -very ballsy to actually like… kill off a main kid though

49 - Fight, Susanoomon - Lucemon Reaches the Human World -OH GOD IT'S THE PENULTIMATE EP!! -Hopefully Lucemon shows up and is just like "um. is this it?? uh. okay." and goes back lol -Susanoomon actually gets thrashed a bit, but isn't dumb enough to fall for Paradise Lost more than once!! It was satisfying seeing Lucemon punched in the face. -NANI. LUCEMON SAID NANI. Anime villains know they're screwed when they gotta break out the NANI?! -I love the touch of Junpei, Izumi and Tomoki shaking after Lucemon's defeat. They're happy and like "yay we won!" but still shook up and terrified. Nice detail. -Oh so even after the holy data is scanned the evil data remains and data can be evil so--OOH LORDY HE BIIIIG!! Junpei just shouting "THIS IS CRAZY!!" when the kids are so small in comparison was funny -Aww, we get the evolution sequences one by one for each kid. It's nice--it'll probably be the last time we see them. Sure it bulks up the run time but it's a cool little "farewell" too. -The rest of the ep is basically a long sequence of Lucemon then the kids returning to the human world and a little chase… then Lucemon unleashes Puragtorial Flame and HOLY CRAP. That sinister ending. Left on the "Obey me or die. Your choice" message in bright red on a black background. Imagine. Imagine like… that was just it. The End. Holy moly haha.

50 - Transcend Time! The Birth of a New Legend -Final episode!! -The kids mope since it seems like it's impossible to stop Lucemon. What can they do???!! Neemon suggests evolving to Susanoomon, but mircles don't happen like that… -EXCPET THE SPIRITS WERE THERE AND IT'S DIGIMON!! So miracles do happen like that!! haha should've listened to Neemon all along fellas -lol the scene where Lucemon erupts out the ground in Shibuya then gets immediately dragged down again… like, imagine the people seeing that. how can they explain that. like, it's not a full on kaiju attack. it's not a monster that appears and hangs around destroying stuff. there's probably little or no video evidence. it's just "rargh grahr!" then vanishes. like. how do you rationalise what you just saw there haha -also Susanoomon's anime model actually looks better than its 3D models and official art? I dunno it just feels a lot more sleek and elegant here. -SURPRISE!! You thought I was a giant demonic dragon monster from hell but I was secretly a disgusting grub in an beach ball!! -aaah the Spirits emerging from Susanoomon and slicing Lucemon up!! Loved it. -The Digital World IS SAVED OMG FINALLY. My blood pressure is plummeting as we speak… it's sad that it's another "you can never return" shtick though, aww. -OMG BOKOMON CHASING THE KIDS AND HE'S RUNNING OMG OMG OMG I HAVE TO INCLUDE IT:

-Okay so they DIDN'T kill off Koichi but holy crap Koji's VA in that hospital scene dude… TT_TT -Everybody is home. They've defeated evil, learned about the value of their lives and how they can become better, happier people. YAY!!

Well, that's Digimon Frontier! My only expectations going in were "it sucks!!" and to be very frank hell no it does not lol. (again maybe it's the English dub which is more janky but y'know) The later episodes did drag a little (mainly the Royal Knights stuff, where the episodes became VERY formulaic) but the smaller moments were still really good (especially the babies and Swanmon!!) but yeah aside from that, the occasional weirdness with Izumi, and that we didn't get much time with Koichi during down time to explore his personality more, I have no complaints. (The later eps sometimes dragging isn't even unique to Frontier, I love Tamers but it has the same issue) No show is flawless so it's like whatever anyways. Definitely more a typical isekai fantasy kind of story than something specific to Digimon but they tried something different!

I'm sad it's over, but now I get to move onto other new Digimon stuff!! (I mean after the Frontier movie)

I mean maybe lol. I'll more likely take a break and watch either a shorter series or wait until I've seen the new movie before starting Digimon Savers. These damn Digi-kids giving me Digi-heart palpitations and Digi-stress... ugh

Jaehyun sighed as he watched her go into her apartment next door. Stepping back into his apartment, he closed the door behind him, strolled back into the living room and plopped back on the couch. He was aware of the tent in his pants but he couldn’t just stroll into the bathroom when Mark was taking a shower just so he can get off.

She smelled so good. Heck, she felt good in his arms.

He shook his head, trying to rid his mind of the pretty older woman next door. Y/N was sure something. Jaehyun normally tend to keep to sleeping with girls around his age or a slight bit younger than him but there was something about the older woman that made him want to throw caution to the wind. He didn’t care what it was going to be. It could have just been strictly sex, they could start dating, maybe he would fall in love. He just knew that he wanted to be in her life in some sort of way.

The question was, did she want him to be part of her life?

Ever since he heard that Y/N coldn't have kids, he felt sad for her. It must've been emotional to hear that she couldn't have kids. He couldn't even imagine the look on her face if her female friends showed off their kids or even mentioned them.

“Oi, Jaehyun.” Mark’s voice called out from the kitchen, the younger male running a hand through his hair. Jaehyun didn’t even know that Mark was finished in the shower. “You like Y/N, right?”

“What makes you think that?” Jaehyun asked, raising an eyebrow, making his way into the kitchen, taking the cup of coffee that the younger man handed him.

“Bruh, I just saw you kissing her.” Mark narrowed his eyes at his roommate, before sipping his coffee. “If you didn’t like her, you would have let her go home to her apartment. But no, you had to go kiss her.”

“You saw that?” Jaehyun asked in surprise as he followed Mark out into the living room.

“Yeah. Ya’ll better not be fucking in this apartment.” Mark frowned, turning on the TV and scrolling through the channels to find something to watch. “It’s bad enough that I hear her have sex because of the damn thin walls but I don’t want to walk in on ya’ll having sex.”

“There’s no way she’ll have sex with me.” Jaehyun lightly chuckled, grabbing his phone from his pocket. He was contemplating if he wanted to send her a text but thought better of it. He stuffed it back into his pants. “I’m sure she’ll probably have sex with Johnny.”

“What makes you so sure?” Mark chuckled, elbowing him. “Seems like Y/N was gonna jump you right then and there.”

"Your vision must be shit, Mark." Jaehyun shook his head, a chuckle escaping his lips. "She wanted to get away from me from what I recalled."

"Bro, I was a bystander." Mark muttered. "Plus my intuition is usually correct. Y/N is into you. You don't see it but any other person can tell that she wanted you."

“I just think she’s more into Johnny.” Jaehyun shrugged, before leaning back on the couch. “He just seems more her type.”

“I’m gonna be real with you here, Jaehyun.” Mark sighed, patting his roommates arm. “Sure, Johnny would be a great match for Y/N. They're both tall, they're both beautiful, they have this weird sense of humor, and they can both be bossy when they want to be. But I can tell you, the woman doesn’t even envision herself with him. She doesn’t even like Johnny like that.”

“Seriously?” Jaehyun raised an eyebrow. How could Aimee not like Johnny?

Mark nodded his head. “They’ve been best friends with each other since they were toddlers. I asked her one day how she felt about both Taeil and Johnny since I couldn’t believe she was friends with two good looking men. She just said they were friends and she had no feelings for them whatsoever. She said they were too young for her.”

“According to her, I’m too young.” Jaehyun exclaimed.

“Yeah, but you’re like different, you know?” Mark shrugged. “You aren’t a childhood friend of hers or anything, so it’s like different. A fresh bit of air. Like you two could be a good match.”

“What about Taeil or Johnny? One of them is bound to like her.” Jaehyun wondered aloud.

“Not Taeil. He’s had feelings for her once but she didn't reciprocate his feelings. Said that she like someone else and she refused to tell anyone.” Mark let out an awkward chuckle. “Maybe Johnny might have feelings for her. But I can never take him seriously since I always see him with a new girl every week.”

“Yeah, I agree with you.” Jaehyun nodded slightly and then looked over at Mark. “This is going to sound weird but tell me how to win over your cousin, Mark.”

"You're asking the wrong person." Mark shuddered at the thought of helping Jaehyun win his cousin's heart. his eyes lit up when he thought of something amazing. "Oh! I know! Let's call Taeyong."

"Why Taeyong?"

"Well... let's give it a chance." Jaehyun nodded. "If I manage to win her over, I'll let you know when I bring her to the apartment."

Mark scowled, nodding his head. "Please do. I do not want to hear ya'll have sex. Better yet, just go to her apartment."

Jaehyun laughed. Leaning back against the couch, he closed his eyes and wondered if it was possible to be a part of her life. He didn't know what this new feeling in his chest was. Love or lust? Whatever it was, he wanted to explore the depths of his emotions with her.

Shane had finally stopped glaring at Amelia every time she said hello or gave him a small wave across the plaza. For some reason, this made her feel extra happy today; because this morning he gave the faintest wave back. Granted, he sneered a little while doing it, but progress is progress. 

She celebrated by planning to get dinner at the saloon. She had a great harvest and genuinely wanted to let herself splurge on that, but she couldn't deny that she wanted to see Shane again. She just knew he was a sweet guy under all of that shell. She knew that a little kindness makes a huge difference. 

Emily grinned as she brought the plate of spaghetti to the table and touched Amelia's shoulder, "Let me know if you need anything else! I'm trying out some cool cocktails," she started back toward the counter as Pam made her way into her spot far to the side of the counter.

Amelia sat herself at a small table by the back wall, wanting to have a quiet moment. She liked the people in town, but she also liked the solace every once in a while. Thankfully it was Tuesday and there are only a few people who come out during the week. 

Scrolling through social media absent-mindedly, she made it halfway through her food before his voice startled her. 

"I gotta ask you a question," Shane started, his voice only mildly slurred, "gonna step outside. Come out when you finish."

She blinked up at him, her eyes wide and mouth full of half-chewed noodles. She gave a small nod and he turned, walking to and out of the front door. 

Hurriedly, she finished the last few bites and dropped her plate off at the counter for Emily to bus who gave her a confused wave. She took a breath and pushed the door open. No sooner than the door closed did she hear him start. 

"Why the hell are you so nice to me?" He asked, his tone almost angry, but there was something else there. 

"Well.. I-"

"I've been a dick to you since you moved here. Yet you buy me beers and bring me fresh peppers. Or your homemade food? What's the deal, kid?"

She stood there for a moment, grimacing at the name, "Shane, you're like 3 years older than I am," she started as he looked surprised for a millisecond, "and because everyone deserves to be cared about," her voice softened, a little embarrassed by the confession. But why stop? Despite his sneer, she continued, "look, you're a dick sometimes, sure. But it's just you pushing people away. I'm not asking you to spill your guts to me, I'm just trying to show you that you can let people in. At least I know I'm not out to get you."

He stood there for a long moment, leaning against the wall. His brows were knit together as he stared down at the ground. After a minute. He finally spoke, his voice much softer, "and if I don't want anyone close to me?"

Something about the way he said it made her stomach sink. She kept her tone soft as she hesitantly touched his shoulder, which looked like it confused him more than anything, "well, if you don't want anyone to be your friend, I'll just be that cool, friendly neighbor who brings you shit because she can."

She grinned as he chuckled, pleased that she could earn such a reaction. Though he looked uncomfortable, like he felt vulnerable and hated it. With a deep sigh, he exhaled, "uh, thanks. I guess," he pushed forward off the wall glancing her for a second. Amelia couldn't tell, but she thought for a second he might be blushing. 

She gave him a warm smile, stepping back toward the door, half in effort to give him space, "hey, I was going to get a plate of pepper poppers. I'm not quite full yet. Why don't you join me? My treat," as she asked, she panicked a bit, wondering if it was too much. 

To her surprise, he smiled. It was small, but it was there. He shook his head a little, a slightly sarcastic tone taking over, "it's like you know they're my favorite," he stepped forward and opened the door, letting her go inside. 

Yoba damn. Maybe a friend won't be so bad. Can't complain about free food… or that smile.
