The Madrigals and Anxiety
so, I think it's not a controversial statement to say that anxiety runs in the family... what I find oddly cute is that a lot of nervous ticks or outbursts are very similar to those of other family members, but let's proceed with order.
Alma, Isabela
Alma had it hard. I think homegirl is the culprit, but she probably had an anxious gene in her before everything.
do we need to explain what her anxiety looks like? absolute perfectionism to the point of insanity so people won't turn on her, constantly making Bruno check the future for possible dangers, self-soothing behaviours (asking Pedro for help, wearing the mourning shawl), always needing to keep a watchful eye on everyone, you name it.
The perfectionism moved straight through to Isabela. There's a whole song about not meeting expectations, so I don't think I need to go fruther into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pepa
Pepa is another obvious one. Her anxiety is palpable throughout most of the movie and it is, unlike her mum, mostly related to things that are not life-or-death situations (Antonio's party needing to be perfect).
She is constantly seen spiralling and using self-soothing rituals (hair touching, "clear skies"), often to no avail.
Her mood swings and irritability outbursts are also proof of anxiety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruno
Before you come at me!! He clearly has OCD... It's in the script so it was meant like this. And I know people say he was just superstitious, but I come from a very superstitious culture and it's not like that 😭
I can prove it!!
Throwing salt. It is usually done after you have spilled it. Bruno had not spilled any salt before the throwing over the shoulder. It is an act that is meant to cancel bad luck from an extremely specific action that he had not done.
Knock knock knock knock knock knock on wood. You are supposed to knock twice, say it once, only after someone has said something good you don't wanna jinx or bad you wanna prevent. Bruno hasn't been talking to anyone in 10 years, it's just a ritual to him at this point OR it's a reaction to his own thoughts. Superstitious people don't do things based on their thoughts: that's OCD. Also the number of knocks and the one on the head is oddly specific and not related to any superstitious beliefs as far as I'm aware.
Fingers crossed. Again, you do that when you are hoping for something good, but nothing happened he might want to cross his fingers for, it's just another ritual. Also, all of these rituals are kind of contradicting each other (hoping for something/trying to prevent something), he's just trying to bring as much good luck as possible.
I'm not saying he is not superstitious, he very much is, but his superstition pathologized to the point of becoming an illness. This is not how someone who's simply superstitious acts.
He also has a generally nervous attitude and lots of self-soothing movements, like the rubbing his arm we'll get to later.
The only other explanation could be that he thinks he is the bad luck, but that still does not explain things like the crossed fingers.
Tumblr media
Julieta, Camilo, Mirabel
They don't look like they struggle a lot with anxiety (I am only talking about the actual condition, not genuine worry that has a reason of being like Casita breaking or not receiving a gift). They are all very accustomed to dealing with anxious family members though and they are good at it.
Mirabel is probably the more anxious among the three, but she is also an incredible supporter for Toñito, who's not getting his own section simply because his fear was very much justified, but for a literal 5yo his anxiety shows great promise of becoming just like his mum's.
Honourable mention in this section goes to Félix and Agustìn, we stan some supportive husbands and fathers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luisa
My baby. The first time we see her as being relevant plot-wise is literally because her eye was twitching. Her character arc is learning to chill. I rest my case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dolores
Now, Dolores is a bit trickier, because she is not as loud as the rest of her family. She does always seem to be extremely on edge though and she is often doubting herself (she stopped believing someone was in the walls despite hearing Bruno for 10+ years because they told her it was not possible).
I don't know whether it's canon or if I've read too much fanfiction, but her room is supposed to have some degree of soundproofing, that she doesn't use because she needs to hear if her family needs help (Luisa's eye twitch).
Finally...
The similar twitches and anxious responses
The arm-rub of Luisa and Bruno (+ supportive sisters <3<3<3<3<3)

Neurodivergent Madrigals
So in the tags of my first headcanon list @omgcheez mentioned neurodivergent headcanons for the canon characters, and it got me thinking. I don't know if I would call all of these headcanons, most of them are my interpretations of canon, or theories I have, but that's close enough.
Bruno- Dude has OCD, they put it in the script, the creators said he’s based off of ND family members, it’s canon. Dude may have autism too, I am largely apathetic to that reading of his character. I neither like nor dislike it. I think it works for him but his character also works without autism. I do headcanon that he comes out of the walls with back problems that not even Julieta can fix, that will make him bed ridden in the last year of his life.
Alma- The whole movie is kind of contingent on her PTSD. Like, she watched her husband get murdered right in front of her and it changed her. It would be really weird to be like “Yeah, sure, her trauma changed her forever, but it didn’t alter her brain chemistry or anything!” So yeah, Alma has PTSD.
Pepa- I don’t know a lot about anxiety disorders, so this theory is one grain of salt away from being canon to me. Is it still an anxiety disorder if the thing making you anxious is the ever looming threat you might summon a hurricane? Or is that just perfectly normal, non-disordered anxiety? Either way, the woman is constantly anxious, so depending on the definition of Anxiety Disorder, she probably has one.
Antonio- This is in that nebulous space between “an idea the writers had” and “something that wasn’t in the movie”. It’s not technically canon, but it’s a little more than a fan theory. He was originally supposed to be non-verbal, so unless the plan was for him to be straight up mute, I think it’s pretty safe to read him as autistic. Although mute Antonio would have been interesting too.
Luisa- This is on the line between fan theory and headcanon. Her people pleasing tendencies scream anxiety disorder to me, especially considering the way she melts down when she feels like she’s disappointing everyone.
Dolores- I don’t think the writers intended for her to be autistic, but a lot of people in that community vibe with her, so that’s a headcanon I will go to bat for. I think that even if she isn’t literally autistic, her gift effects her in ways that she kind of might as well be. Y'know? It's like with Alma, it's sort of weird to be like "Yeah, ok, so because of her super hearing she experiences a lot of the same issues as an autistic person who struggles with sensory sensitivity, but she doesn't have an autistic brain! Just an extremely similar life experience!".
Mirabel- She’s probably got some unaddressed depression, I feel like that’s kind of a given. Although, the movie sets her up more as a metaphor for being physically disabled.
Isabela- I think you could very easily read Isabela as being some variation of ND that hyper fixates (on plants), and she just has masking skills off the charts. So either autism or ADHD, or both.
Julieta- IDK what problems Juli has, but realistically she’s been dealing with gruesome injuries from a young age. So she’s probably got some sort of trauma response. We don't see enough of her character outside the role of Caring Mother for me to make a call on this.
Camilo- He’s a theatre kid.

The Marvelous Mayhem of the Madrigals Minds chapter 5 out!
I finished chapter 5! Nice! Now I'll start chapter 6 and I also have some short fics I'm working on. (Like a crossover with Kaeloo.)
Infos on the story:
Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Additional Tags: Therapy, Attempt at Humor, Fluff and Angst, No Smut, No Incest, why do I feel I have to write that?, Proofread, slow at updating, Slow Writer, Angst, probably, because I'm making them talk about their struggles, Madrigal Family Needs Therapy (Disney), Bruno Madrigal Has OCD, Anxiety, Madrigal Family Has Issues (Disney), No Romance, Other Additional Tags to Be Added, Neurodivergent Bruno Madrigal, Aromantic Asexual Bruno Madrigal, They all need therapy, family madrigal needs therapy, Bruno Madrigal Needs Therapy, Mirabel Madrigal Needs Therapy, Camilo Madrigal Needs Therapy, Félix Madrigal needs therapy, Pepa Madrigal Needs Therapy, Dolores Madrigal Needs Therapy, Isabela Madrigal Needs Therapy, Antonio Madrigal Needs Therapy, Abuela Alma Madrigal needs therapy, Mariano Guzman needs therapy, Julieta Madrigal Needs Therapy, Agustin Madrigal needs therapy, Luisa Madrigal Needs Therapy, Bisexual Mirabel Madrigal, implied at least - Freeform, Bisexual Female Character of Color, a bit of arophobia
Summary:
The Encanto had experienced one of their biggest crises when the Madrigal family saw their Casita fall. Fortunately, they had been able to rebuild it with the help of the townspeople. Following that incident, the mountains were now split up, allowing anyone to get into the Encanto. Funny it took so long for someone new to actually enter the town!
And that first person was the doctor Alborotadora Remedios, therapist. While she had been hiking for days, a bag with all of her things on her back and the sun hot on her dark brown skin, she discovered an opening in the mountains. Her map wasn’t indicating any path or any way through, contradicting what she had in front of her. Wondering if it was related to the recent earthquake she had heard about, she decided to give it a go, reminding herself of all the times she enticed her patients into not being afraid to try new things. What kind of therapist would she be if she wasn’t applying her own advice? She told herself she’d back up if there was any danger.
------
Or when a therapist meets the Madrigal family and gives up her vacation to help them feel better.

In defense of headcanoning Dolores Madrigal as autistic (because some of you people have the FLIMSIEST reasons for why she is not)
1. Familiarity in stimming
Autistic folks tend to use things that are already accepted by those around us as stims. A band or choir kid might trill their lips, for example. This also applies to cultural things (eg; the little "hm"). Just because something is a cultural behavior does not mean it can't be used as a stim. (Something similar applies to the Bruno OCD thing, but that's a different post)
2. Tone and speech
Dolores is blunt and speaks with a quiet monotone. When she wants to say something, she gets right to the point. It's there the whole movie. Just one example: telling the kids about Mira's lack of a gift? It was common knowledge (meaning the kids would find out anyway) and Mira didn't want to tell them despite them pestering her about it. A common reaction for autistic folks to have to situations like that is "I'll tell them so you don't have to."
Autistic people often convey either more or less emotion than we mean to, and it's not uncommon to overcorrect. If you didn't see this in Dolores... did you even watch the movie?
3. Noise
If you pay attention to the details, it becomes clear that Dolores' gift is the ability to CONTROL her hearing, not simply hear everything. When abuela tells her to, she actively directs her senses to a specific location. If she heard every little thing within such a large distance all the time, she would be unable to function. The whole Madrigal family has gifts that either fit who they are as a person or have the ability to help them.
Despite this, her ears are obviously still sensitive. She covers her ears in the crowd, when Casita is cracking, etc. Autistic people can often hear everything around us (we do not hear things super loud, we are unable to block out even sounds neurotypicals don't notice) and as such conditions like misophonia are often comorbid.
When a group of people can all look at a character and go "Oh, you're one of us!" it's probably best to... I don't know, listen to them? And not try to take away a character's relatability using arguements that don't work at all?

Inarticulate thoughts, because I’m caffeinated.
Firstly, yes OCD Bruno. It’s in the script. And it doesn’t erase his culture. My OCD manifests about half the time in me knocking on wood. I got the superstition from my dad (we aren’t Colombian, but we’ve done this for years and he’s mixed not white and I’m possibly mixed depending on your definition of mixed), but it’s not about the superstition for me, it got wrapped up in my warding off the intrusive thoughts. I know there are other interpretations, but if you are gonna be rude about it, then please don’t read the post, okay? Okay!
Sometimes Bruno tries to mask it, and will disguise the knocking and mutter his phrase. He thinks it’s less obtrusive. And it probably would be, if his fam didn’t know to look out for it. Sometimes his family have a hard time telling his normal fidgeting apart from him trying to be subtle about knocking. It makes him feel a little awkward about it, but he takes it in mostly good spirit.
Just because he’s knocking doesn’t mean he’s more anxious. But he tends to knock more when he is more anxious. (It just doesn’t work the other way). Because you can still have a lot of intrusive thoughts even when you’re calm. Sometimes he’ll be completely chill, but the thoughts keep coming so he’ll be completely at ease, but knocking quietly on whatever he’s sitting on, reading or writing or drawing.
If his hands are busy, when he’s cooking or something, sometimes he’ll “knock” with his foot.
If he isn’t near wood, he’s been known to rationalize just about anything as vaguely wood enough. Like his head. Or stomping his foot, if his shoe’s sole is rubber which comes from a plant and that plant has wood, or cardboard or paper because that comes from wood. He does a lot of mental gymnastics about this to try to calm down.
Okay that’s it for now. It’s too hot in my car byyyyyyyye

Hello ! I'm suggesting Bruno Madrigal from Encanto (headcanon, OCD-coded ?)
I know not everyone agree about it, but I think the ideas that 1/ his rituals are superstitions that are a big part of his culture and 2/ he is *incredibly* reliant on them (in part due to trauma) can and should be able to coexist. Hope he makes it, but in any case have a good day and good luck with all the submissions !
Counting yours Bruno Currently has 3 nominations, which is a good number since most people only have 1 so far. :D
also I cant comment on the culture vs how reliant he is on thing as it is not my own culture, so ill just leave that there, :)
