I'm actually obsessed with the idea of a series of Encanto shorts that's just Bruno and his rats reenacting popular movies Olaf Presents-style because first of all I think it would be great but second of all I absolutely love the implication that a 50 year old neurodivergent Colombian man and his horde of rats has the same appeal to general audiences as Olaf the talking snowman

I feel you on the burnout. I think I'm there too.
Crack idea: The rats actually go to confession.
The slightly less crack idea: The family trying to organize all of the animal friends that live in Casita for the Feast of Saint Francis (I've been doing research!)
Rat confession rat confession rat confession!
*
“This is Nodgraedxil-”
Bruno blinked and shook his head. “No, no, that’s Jorge Junior, because of that time he got a thimble stuck on his head when he was a baby.”
“Tío.” The tone in Antonio’s voice was far too close to the disappointed-and-exasperated one Félix used sometimes. “That’s not his real name. And he says you promised not to tell anyone about that again, was that a lie?”
“...technically, I guess?” Bruno looked helplessly at José, who shrugged.
“I’ll put it on your tab,” the priest muttered, then leaned down to get a closer look at the rat in Antonio’s hands. To his credit he kept his expression neutral; Bruno knew he was not convinced of the little creatures’ charms, which made him agreeing to do this an act of professional courtesy. “And what does, uh, Nadgerd-”
“Nodgraedxil.”
“-have to confess?”
After ruling out the confessional itself they’d opted to do this in the little chapel off the main altar, as it offered both privacy and an appropriate level of formality for the proceedings. Bruno perched on the edge of a pew, José - dressed in his frock and collar - sat on a chair facing him, and between them stood Antonio, who had taken the rat from his uncle and presented him to the priest for absolution.
“He steals berries from Señor Queso because he’s jealous. He wants to play Ratón Pérez in a concert some time. So…he confesses to theft. And envy.”
“I see,” José said gravely. His gaze shifted from the rodent to Bruno and managed to convey exactly how delighted he was by this ridiculous situation, and Bruno felt his heart melt a little. Maybe it wasn’t just professional courtesy. “And is he sorry for what he has done?”
Antonio waggled a finger at Nodgraedxil, who sat up on his haunches and grasped it in his front paws, then nuzzled his fuzzy face against it. The boy hummed. “He says yes, but that he still wants a chance to be Ratón Pérez.”
This particular rat, Bruno knew, had proven difficult to train and simply refused to stay in one spot not matter how much positive reinforcement he received. Still, it was worth another try, so he shrugged and nodded.
“Alright. Next time, Jorg- Nodgraedxil will have a turn. But only if he stops stealing berries.”
“Yes, he has to…show penitence,” José agreed while failing to keep a straight face. He sat back and cleared his throat. “Nodgraedxil, I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
The humans made the sign of the cross. The rat squeaked and scratched behind his ear with a back foot.
“Can he have a bread snack now?” Antonio asked in a stage whisper.
José thought about this, then folded his hands. “Not right now, but when your tío brings him up to the altar next Mass, he will.”
Bruno’s jaw dropped and he  looked from his nephew to his rat to his…whatever they were, about to protest, but Antotio was beaming at him happily, and José gave him a wink, and he settled back in the pew, sighing.
“Fine. But I’ve got like four more rats in this ruana so you’d better make sure you’ve got enough rodent-sized sacraments to go around.”
“And grape juice!” Antonio enthused. “He says he wants the grape juice too.”
Bruno snorted. “Maybe you can serve it to them in a thimble.”
Nodgraedxil, outraged, leaped over and gave Bruno a reproachful nip on the hand. This caused some swearing, which resulted in a whole new round of confessions.

Birthday prompt? Antonio talks to the rats and they set up a special party just for their Mami Bruno and his litter-mates! Basically, rats throw a party for Bruno, using Antonio to invite Pepa and Juli. Rats try giving them presents. Reactions vary.
Tumblr media
Julieta knew her brother's little pets were theatrical. For rodents, they were surprisingly skilled actors. They were such dramatic little things, wailing for Bruno's attention and following him devotedly. They were clearly happiest so long as Bruno was in the room.
"He makes them feel safe," Antonio explained, cradling one of the older rats gently. "They say that Tio Bruno's looked after their families for a long, long time."
Julieta would rather not think of that long long time, but the fact remained that the rats adored Bruno. And, with Antonio translating, he was able to explain the concept of a birthday to the rats, as well as presents.
So maybe Julieta shouldn't have been surprised when the rats swarmed Bruno shortly after their birthday breakfast. They brought forward dandelions, marbles, thimbles, pebbles and (for some reason) a particularly squashed strawberry.
The rats ran in circles, chittering excitedly. Some of them seemed to dance, one played dead and a few just stared at Bruno expectantly.
Bruno was clearly as baffled as Julieta; his smile was uncertain, his eyes were wide, but he still knelt down to examine the stranger offerings.
"Oh, what's all this?" he asked, stroking the nearest rat on the head.
Antonio popped his head out of the kitchen. "They're your birthday presents!" he chirped. "I told them all about birthdays and presents." The rats squeaked some more and Antonio nodded, turning his attention back to Bruno. "They say they love you very much, Tio."
Bruno's uncertain smile turned into a beaming grin.
"Aw, you guys!" he cooed, opening his hands for his pets to run to him. They crawled onto his lap, his hands, arms and shoulders. They nudged him with their little noses and batted at him with their paws. One rat appeared to be dozing off on his knee.
Julieta was sure her own smile was ridiculously sappy. Pepa would tease them both rotten for it, but she couldn't help it. It was good to know someone had been looking out for her brother all these years- even if it was a bunch of rats.
Besides, Bruno had a point: they were very cute.

Encantober 2023 Day 4: Mystery
It was a pretty normal day in the Encanto, well, as normal as you would expect. The sun was shining, which meant Pepa was in a good mood today. Most of the Madrigal family were out in the village doing their morning chores, except for Bruno and Antonio. They decided to stay behind and keep Mirabel company for the morning. The adults in the family agreed to rotate in doing so, along with the rest of the children before their gift ceremonies.
Bruno let Mirabel and Antonio come with him to his lounge in the walls, which he sometimes stayed in if he was feeling overwhelmed or needed a break. Mirabel and Antonio would also come to Bruno’s lounge when they felt overwhelmed too; they also made friends with his rats while she relaxed, which helped Mirabel overcome her fear. This also helped Bruno feel at ease, since whenever he would bring a rat home when he was younger, the rest of the family did not want him to bring them in the house.
Mirabel, Antonio, and Bruno hung out in his lounge that day, enjoying one of his telenovelas until one of his rats, Juan, ran up to the trio to tell them something. Since Antonio was the only one to understand Bruno’s rats, Bruno allowed him to translate what his rats were trying to say to him.
“He’s saying that his cheese collection went missing. He saw it this morning in the corner of his room where it always was, and when he came back for lunch, it was gone,” Antonio explained.
“It wasn’t anywhere else in his room?” Bruno asked.
“He says that he looked all over his room for it, but he can’t find it!”
“It sounds like we may have a thief on our hands,” Mirabel said.
“But how are we going to be able to find the stash? All of their rooms are way too small for us to fit in and find it,” Bruno mentioned.
“It could be anywhere in the walls for all we know. Don’t you have any rats that have stronger senses of smell than any other?” Antonio asked.
“Santiago and Ana have the best sense of smell of all my rats. Maybe they could help us! But I’m going to have to find them.”
“Do you know where they usually are?” Mirabel asked.
“They would normally be through the corridor. They tend to be running around there.”
The trio made their way through the corridor of Casita’s walls to find Santiago and Ana in the wall adjacent to the living room. Bruno picked them up and handed them to Antonio so he could explain what happened. Once he explained, Antonio translated what they said.
“They can’t smell it right now. We would have to look all over Casita’s walls to find it.”
“We should probably split up. I’ll take Santiago with me and you can take Ana, Tonito. Mirabel, you can choose who you want to go with.”
“Okay; I’ll go with Antonio and Ana. We can check the upstairs area together and you can stay downstairs with Santiago.”
As the trio split up, Mirabel and Antonio made the climb to the second floor of Casita’s walls. Mirabel went up first after putting Ana up, then she helped Antonio up and he picked up Ana once both of the two youngest Madrigal grandkids were on the second floor. The two quickly recovered before beginning to follow Ana.
“She says the smell is coming from over there!” Antonio said as he pointed straight forward.
Mirabel and Antonio followed Ana over to the corner of Casita that was adjacent to Camilo’s room. Antonio let go of Ana to let her go inside the hole and try to find the cheese stash in his room. They stayed behind to see what happened, but after only twenty minutes, they heard a yell coming from the room. Ana ran back into the hole and into Antonio’s hand to tell him what happened.
“She says she found where the smell was coming from, but it was not Juan’s cheese stash. It just smelled like it. Camilo also found her so she had to run back to us.”
“I’m not surprised Camilo’s room smells like a cheese stash. The amount of times he snuck mama’s arepas up to his room is too many to count.”
“We’ll just have to keep looking. I’m sure Ana will find it somewhere else.”
----------------------------------------
Later downstairs, Bruno and Santiago continued making rounds around Casita’s walls to find the stash. Santiago continued smelling for the stash for a while, but found nothing yet. It was not until after they got to the walls adjacent to the edge of the courtyard when Santiago ran to where the smell was coming from and Bruno followed.
Bruno and Santiago found themselves in a corner of Casita’s walls with a hole leading to the backyard. Santiago made his way inside the hole to try and find where the smell was coming from. Bruno stayed back for a half hour as Santiago scurried around Casita’s backyard, until he came back with no luck. It turned out it was the leftover smell of their grill when Julieta made her arepas outside.
“We’ll find Juan’s cheese stash, Santi. I’m sure Ana, Antonio, and Mirabel have found the stash by now.”
The trio met back in front of Bruno’s lounge with Santiago and Ana, explaining what they found. They explained to each other that none of the groups found any luck in finding Juan’s cheese stash.
“All Ana could find was the smell of Camilo’s room,” Antonio explained.
“And all Santiago could find was the smell of the grill outside in the backyard,” Bruno replied.
“Is Juan going to be disappointed that even Santiago and Ana couldn’t find his cheese stash?” Mirabel asked.
“Probably; I’ll go get him and tell him the bad news.”
Before Bruno could go back to his lounge, Santiago and Ana ran inside the lounge and into a hole. Bruno, Antonio, and Mirabel followed them in to see what they were trying to find. After only ten minutes, Santiago and Ana came back out with a stash of cheese that looked just like the one Juan had. Juan came out of his hole to see Santiago and Ana with the stash and ran straight to them.
“They found it! I knew they would find it!” Antonio exclaimed.
“It turned out Juan just misplaced it this entire time. Did you know you left it on the other side of the room?” Bruno asked.
Juan spoke to Antonio. “He said he forgot he put it there and thought he put it where he usually put it.”
“Well, Juan, now that you found your cheese stash, do you want to let Santiago and Ana help you move it back to your room?”
Juan, Santiago, and Ana grabbed chunks of cheese and passed them over to Juan’s hole. Bruno, Antonio, and Mirabel decided to help them too and grabbed the rest of the stash to give to Juan to put in his hole.
“I guess we make pretty good detectives, don’t we Bruno?” Mirabel asked.
“If anything, Santiago and Ana were the real detectives. They were the ones who found Juan’s stash after all.”
