A Little Holiday Cheer

Happy Holidays!

@lilyoffandoms had no idea what they were creating when they wrote a tiny drabble about these three sets of loons. Since then, Lily, Dani (@storyofmychoices), and I have expanded on their hijinx, and it just gets more fun with time. I asked the lovely, talented, and all-around amazing @/artbyainna (IG) to create this commemoration not only of the friendship between Ethan, Merida, Bryce, Olivia, Casey & Tobias but, more importantly, the friendship between us! 😊 As always, she MORE than delivered! I hope this brings you a little smile.

There was something about this time of year... even the mundane seemed to morph into magic, and tonight's gathering of friends was no exception. While the robust aroma of lasagna competed with the sweet scent of sugar cookies baking in the second oven, neither managed to diffuse the fragrant pine from the Christmas tree. Music served only as a background to the laughter and lively chatter, but while Bryce and Olivia were too engaged in the conversation.. and each other... to notice the music shift from soulful renditions of holiday standards back to melodic strings and woodwinds, Merida didn’t miss a beat. Resplendent in her holiday attire, she halted slicing provolone for the charcuterie board long enough to shoot Ethan a menacing glare.

“Ethan Jonah Ramsey, so help me God! If you turn Stevie off to put The Nutcracker back on one more time, I will not be responsible for my actions!”

“I’d be careful,” Bryce advised. “She is holding an exceptionally large knife.”

Ethan started to open his mouth, then thought better of it. With a quick flick of the wrist, “That’s What Christmas Means to Me My Love” blared through the air once more.

“What did it?” Olivia teased. “Knowing you were outnumbered, or the large knife?”

Ethan leaned against the counter, popped a piece of chorizo in his mouth, and shrugged. “It’s the season of goodwill. Let's go with that.” His half-smile quickly retreated when Merida slapped his hand.

“There will be no goodwill in this house if you keep sneaking food! You have to wait until all of our guests arrive.”

A sigh tinged with frustration escaped him. “I fail to see why we all need to starve because Carrick is late... again.”

“Technically, he’s not late,” Olivia advised.

“She’s right,” Merida agreed. “It’s only seven-fifty, and dinner starts at eight. They have ten minutes before we can declare them late.”

Ethan turned to her with astonishment. “But I was there when you told him to be here at seven!”

“Yes,” Merida said matter-of-factly. “I told him that to ensure they’d be here by eight.”

“But since it's Tobias and Casey we're talking about,” Bryce interjected. “You probably should have told them six."

"True," Olivia nodded, biting into a fluffy cheese puff. “Knowing Casey, she’ll want to redo her hair and makeup.”

Ethan raised his eyebrows in disbelief as Merida smiled. “What?” she asked.

“Olivia is eating a cheese puff and not an ounce of chastisement from you... but I sneak a sliver of sausage, and you considered dismemberment!”

“Ethan...Olivia is a guest! Besides, she’s too cute to dismember.”

The doorbell rang, and the friends looked at their phones at 7:58 PM.

“Wow! They’re early!” Bryce exclaimed. “And they say Christmas miracles are a thing of the past!”

“Great,” Merida laughed as she wiped her hands with a dish towel. “That means they probably didn’t get it all out of their systems, and they’ll be horny on main all night.”

“And that would be different from every other time... how?” Bryce laughed.

Merida scurried down the hallway, high heels clicking, but her irritated boyfriend beat her to the door, swinging it open to find Tobias planting kisses on a giggling Casey’s neck.

“Do you two ever stop?”

“What?” Tobias protested with a sheepish grin. “We weren’t doing anything. We were just stuck in....”

“TRAFFIC!” The four friends shouted.

“That is what they call it these days,” Olivia winked, all too proud of herself. "Aren't they?"

“Hey! You can’t blame us,” Casey said, tossing her fuzzy coat over Ethan’s unextended arm. “Boston is just filled with traffic!”

“Mmmhmmm,” Merida greeted her friend with a warm embrace. “And you two are always without GPS.”

“That’s right,” Casey smiled. “We prefer to go by... feel.”

“Can we send them home now?” Ethan groaned.

But Merida and Casey were already halfway down the hall, linked arm-in-arm and giggling like schoolgirls. Ethan jumped when Tobias’s hand landed on his shoulder with a thud.

“You were saying, buddy?”

Running a hand down his face, Ethan surrendered. “Olivia is right. I’m outnumbered.”

Moments later, the couples were assembled around the kitchen table, with wine generously poured. Ethan happily partook in cured meats as he endured one too many jokes about salami from his best-freinemy.

“Tobias, I swear, you never escaped adolescence.”

“Was that something we were supposed to escape?”

Bryce raised his glass with a smile. “Only during working hours!”

“And these are not working hours,” Merida gleefully stated. “A toast... to friends, who have become family.”

“And by family, she means you’re inescapable!” Ethan grinned.

“Just like adolescence,” Casey beamed, clinking her glass with the others.

Merida set her eyes on Ethan’s, a radiant smile on her lips. “And would you have it any other way?”

Wrapping his arm around her waist he pulled her close. "No," he beamed. "Despite each of you, save Olivia, causing me more grey hairs by the moment... I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Several drinks in, you know they started teasing Tobias about his "Ho-Ho-Ho" sweater. Everyone except Olivia, who wasn't sure what they meant until Bryce whispered it in her ear. Merida and Casey quickly agreed to corrupt the poor dear much more before their New Year's Eve gathering!

“They look bored,” Olivia said, taking a sip of wine, as she looked out across the room at the three standing near the bar.

Merida and Casey followed her gaze.

“Agreed that Tobias and Bryce do,” Merida laughed. “But that’s just Ethan’s face.”

Casey choked on her drink as Olivia hid her giggle politely behind her hand.

When Casey had recovered with a few pats on the back from both Merida and Olivia she asked with a smirk, “Want to liven things up for them?”

“Oh I’m in,” Merida matched her smirk.

“You don’t even know what she has in mind,” Olivia glanced around Casey between them to smile at Merida.

“It could only be one thing.”

“Rhys, I’m insulted!” Casey said mockingly. “Get your head out of the gutter.”

“Tell me I’m wrong,” Merida challenged.

“Okay, you’re not. But still, pretend. Occasionally. For my sake,” she smirked at Merida. “You in, Liv?” Casey asked turing to face her.

“I want to hear the plan first.”

“Nope. Decide now. In or out,” Casey smiled.

“I think it’s in AND ou-“

“Merida!” Olivia gasped.

“Tell me I’m wrong.”

“How much have you had to drink?” Olivia asked.

“A glass. This is just me, darling. Anything to keep me entertained at these snooze-fests.”

Olivia smiled brightly at her friend, “In and out?”

Merida nodded with a grin.

“I think that’s what Tobias has in mind right now judging by the look he’s throwing Case.”

“That’s just his face around her,” Merida responded between giggles.

“Okay, fine. I’m in,” Olivia gave in.

“Excellent,” Casey broke off looking at Tobias and clapped her hands. “I have a little wager. Point system as usual. Chaste public kiss, one point. Less than chaste public kiss, two points. Bit of public action, three points. Other behind closed doors action, four points. Anything that could or does get you arrested, automatic winner. Tally points at the end of the night and lowest buys dinner next group date night. Deal?”

“You’re on!” Merida clasped Casey’s offered hand and both looked to Olivia.

“Oh you’re both going down! It’s a deal,” Olivia smirked and clasped both their hands.

“May the best woman win,” Casey said as she squeezed both their hands and they broke for the three men across the room.

Something Sweet

In some ways, it was a typical Boston morning. The Paramount Diner was bustling with city-dwellers grabbing sustenance before heading to work. The clattering of dishes, morning news blaring from the TV, and a mixture of North End and Brahmin accents shouting orders to Joey, who manned the grill, was not out of the ordinary. The unusual thing was our chatty little crew could actually hear it.

It had become a Wednesday morning tradition. Ethan and Bryce headed there right after the gym; Merida and Olivia stopped by before work, and Casey and Tobias arrived just after... well... you know. Olivia had dubbed them the “breakfast besties,” and Ethan did his best to prevent rolling his eyes every time he heard it. On a typical morning, there would be at least three different conversations taking place, each trying to yell over the other, and anything happening outside of their table would be a misty blur.

But today, you could hear a pin drop. It could be attributed to a late case that left Tobias, Casey, Ethan, and Merida with very little sleep. Or it might have to do with the flight they had to catch in three hours. Perhaps Bryce had a case of nerves over the surgery he had been called to assist on at U Mass Memorial. The rare procedure was being streamed live to nearly every major hospital and medical school in America. No pressure there. The only one who appeared to have a normal day ahead was Olivia, and that was the problem.

Bryce scowled in an utterly oblivious Ethan's direction. But the curmudgeonly doctor couldn’t ignore the handsome, young surgeon when he blurted out, “I can’t believe you had to make this presentation today... of all days!”

Merida looped their arm with Ethan’s and leaned in close.

“Hey, you know I’m the last one who would typically rush to his defense, but I don’t think Ethan had anything to do with scheduling the AMA symposium.”

“And while I’m the next to last person to rush to his defense,” Tobias jumped in. “I can confirm he wasn't on their selection committee, either. So he wasn’t the one that invited us to present.”

Ethan reached for his coffee with a shake of his head. “Thank you both... I think.”

Across the table, Olivia was growing increasingly uncomfortable. “Guys, it’s OK. We’ve been over this before... I don’t mind.”

“Well, I mind,” Bryce frowned, and Ethan couldn't hold back anymore.

“Lahela, for what it’s worth, I’m not responsible for you being asked to assist on a pulmonary autograft at U Mass either.”

“I know,” Bryce unreasonably tried to reason. “But if you didn’t have the symposium today, I wouldn’t have to worry about Olivia being alone at Edenbrook on her birthday!”

“Bryce,” Olivia comforted. “It’s all right. I’m a big girl, and we’re all celebrating this weekend. It’s OK.”

And it was. She was an adult, after all, not only an adult but a doctor, just like the others. It would be silly to think that their busy worlds would stop just because it was her birthday. But if she was completely honest, she was a little sad that she wouldn’t see any of their faces in Edenbrook today.

“It’s all right,” Casey said, tapping Olivia’s knee. “We are going to spoil the heck out of this beauty on Saturday.”

“Damn straight we are,” Merida chimed in. “We have an epic spa day planned, with bottomless mimosas to boot! You guys are lucky if we remember to meet you for dinner after!"

“Oh, you’ll remember,” Tobias chuckled. “If you think Casey will forget meatballs at Carmelina's, you’re bugging.”

Ethan let out a sigh. "Is this where someone makes an obnoxious comment about these two and meatballs."

"Only you," Casey teased. "You really need to stop being such an adolescent, Ramsey!"

Ignoring the exasperated expression on Ethan's face, Casey turned to Olivia.

“I love that we share a favorite restaurant.”

“Of course we do,” Olivia grinned. “We have exquisite taste!” She turned to Bryce and lovingly brushed his hair away from his eyes. “Honey, as far as I’m concerned, Saturday is my birthday, and it will be great. Today... it’s just another Wednesday.”

After giving Olivia a dozen kisses, Bryce left directly for U Mass while the others headed to Edenbrook. Olivia had a busy day ahead, and her friends were checking in on patients before their flight. But Casey couldn't help but feel sad when she watched Olivia walk away.

“I know I said it doesn’t matter, but I was just trying to look at the bright side. Honestly, I hate that we won't be here for Liv’s birthday.”

“Yeah,” Merida soughed. “I feel the same way. Of all days for us to all be away.”

“In reality, we’d all be busy working anyway, but at least we could take little moments throughout the day to make her feel special, you know?”

Merida tapped their pen on the desk. That glimmer that appeared in their eyes whenever an idea struck suddenly appeared. “Come with me!" Merida said, grabbing Casey's hand. "I have an idea.”

Several hours later, Bryce was focused on his surgery as the other's plane touched down in Cleveland. Olivia grabbed her folders from the nurses’ station, surprised to find a bright pink envelope on top of the stack.

With a gentle smile, she put the note in her pocket and continued with her day. Before she knew it, she was ready to sign off for lunch when Nurse Laura handed her an envelope.

“What’s this?” Olivia asked. “I’m not waiting on any results?”

“Not sure,” Laura shrugged. “But I was given strict orders to get that to you right before you headed to lunch.”

Olivia opened the envelope to find an ecru sheet of fine stationery, a note with penmanship not typically associated with a doctor inside.

Olivia beamed as she held the note close to her heart. She was filled with warmth, and not just because she was anxious for the delicious Penne.

“Laura, you have lunch now, don’t you?”

“I do,” the nurse nodded.

“Good! Join me! Carmelina’s portions are more than enough for two, and trust me! You’ll love this!”

The day was busier than usual, so it passed by in a flash, and now, it was time to go home. She just had to make one stop at the nurse's station, to pick up the beautiful flowers Bryce had delivered. But it looked like her surprises weren’t over yet. An adorable pink box from Little Miss Cupcape sat next to her flowers, a colorful note affixed.

The nurses watched on silently as Olivia’s eyes began to tear. “Your friends really love you,” Laura smiled.

“I know,” Liv blushed. “Leave it to them to make me feel special from seven hundred miles away.”

She gathered up her belongings when Laura reminded her of just one more thing... there was no way the nurses were letting her leave before they got to sing.

I hope you enjoyed this, Dani. I know this isn't the easiest birthday for you, but I still hope you find joy in special little moments throughout the day—just like Olivia did here.

Choices Open Heart - Tobias x Casey, Bryce x Olivia, and Ethan x Merida

For @choicesoctober from best friend prompt.

Warnings & A/N: Alcohol mention (tipsy characters). Thanks for the idea last night Elsa hehe (I took notes lol). Casey belongs to @jerzwriter and Olivia belongs to @storyofmychoices.

“Okay okay what about that one?” Merida subtly pointed out a middle aged woman in a skintight blue dress.

They all considered her for a while as she talked animatedly to anyone that came within range of her.

“Bryce,” Casey and Merida said in unison.

“He’d be the only one able to handle her…, I don’t know,” Merida waved her hand.

“Clinging? Neediness?”

“Agreed,” Olivia nodded and giggled as both women turned their attention to her taking the seat beside them.

“You made it!” Merida squeezed her hand with a grin and flagged down the bartender and ordered them all a round.

“I had to say hello to Bryce real quick.”

Casey gave Olivia a quick hug and then passed out the drinks the bartender slid onto the polished bar for them.

“But we know you can’t stay away from us for too long,” Casey teased.

“Well yes,” Olivia giggled, “that and Bryce was trapped in a conversation I really didn’t want to be sucked into so….”

The other two laughed and raised their glasses together.

“Cheers to tonight and letting our partners fend for themselves,” Merida smirked.

“Now that one,” Olivia nodded with a grin to a man sidling up to the bar a few bar stools down from them.

They watched as the man ordered the most pretentious cocktail.

“Ethan,” they all agreed.

“Though he’d probably argue there is a better one out there,” Casey countered.

“So Tobias? Though he would probably just tease the poor man about how pretentious that drink order was.”

“Yeah, Ethan,” Merida confirmed. “He’d order one that was even more pretentious just to one up the guy.”

The game went on and on. Drink after drink. Plate after plate of appetizers. And much laughter.

“How about that one?” Casey pointed out a woman who had drunkenly draped herself across the piano to flirt with the musician.

“What are you gorgeous ladies up to?” Tobias saunter up behind Casey and kissed her forehead as she looked up to smile at him innocently.

“Catching up,” Olivia said.

“Having some fun people watching,” Merida said.

“Deciding who we’d pair you boys up with around here,” Casey smirked.

“Nice,” he grinned. “Who are we focusing on right now?”

They all pointed not at all subtly in the drunk woman’s direction.

“I think she needs to meet Ethan,” Tobias smirked and with a rather deep and lingering kiss with Casey went over to the woman.

The ladies watched as he greeted her.

“Is he?” Olivia said in shock.

Tobias led her across the room until they were standing in front of Ethan.

“Oh my god! He is. This is the best thing to happen all night!” Merida giggled and leaned back in her seat with her drink in hand to watch it play out.

“Did you expect anything less?” Casey smiled into her drink.

They lost it when Ethan paled and the woman looped her arms through Ethan’s and leaned heavily against him and Tobias patted Ethan’s arm with a wicked smirk and some teasing comment and walked back toward the three friends.

Merida called the bartender back and ordered a drink which she handed to Tobias upon his return.

“For my hero,” she said and clinked her drink to his.

“Bryce next!” Olivia clapped her hands together, her face flushed with the warmth of the room and a few drinks.

“Have I mentioned that tipsy Olivia is a ton of fun?” Casey beamed at Tobias.

“You have not but I got to start spending more time with you three,” he said between swigs of his drink before turning to Olivia.

“Liv, my dear, who shall it be?”
