Notes: I am so sorry this is extremely short, but I have no idea how to make it longer. I also have no idea what I’m doing, and this feels a bit like a manual rather than a letter, but I’ve had the idea stuck in my head forever.

One use of Y/N, even though it’s not my favorite thing. I just can’t find a way around it.

Dear Dazai,

Part of me will never forgive you for taking Y/N from me. But I know it’s for the best. You can give them the life I never could. They did always say I was married to my work.

But I just wanted to let you know some things about them.

They like sleeping with the window open and only will sleep on the right side of the shared futon. Falling asleep is something they struggle with, and cuddling is the best way to remedy that.

Make sure they take their medication. They won’t want to. They say it tastes terrible, but they know they need it. They may also forget. So be sure to remind them.

Kiss them. They love affection, but especially kisses. I don’t care if you get embarrassed as I did. But it makes them feel happy. They said it makes them feel wanted. It makes them feel whole.

Don’t break their heart. They may not be my partner anymore, but I still care for them. And I will personally kill you if you do.

Kunikida Doppo

Morality

From a faraway glance, it would seem like Kunikida’s morality’s pretty simple and straight to the point, and, for the most part, it is. When it comes to where he will be on the morality scale, he would be between Atsushi and Ranpo.

This is due to how strict he is about his ideals, which discuss morality amongst many things. Although his morality seems pretty clear, the reasons for it are not. This is as we don’t have much information on his past. It’s quite obvious that he’s faced some form of injustice in the past, or perhaps even witnessed it, and because of that, he created his ideals. I think that he created them for two reasons, and this meant for the part of the ideals that discusses morality. One of which is so that he can become better than those people he saw. It’s so that he could become a better version of himself. He does not want to hurt people who have done nothing, and it’s been shown multiple times in the anime and manga how much he despises violence against the innocent, and, because of that, he holds himself to strict ideals. The other reason is so that people like those he saw, cruel people, stop existing within his world. He knows that, now, at least, he will never hurt others, even if it was by accident, but that isn’t enough for him. He wants others to do the same thing as he does, as he knows that that’s the only way that he’d achieve a more peaceful world, where innocent people aren’t hurt. Kunikida is simply a righteous man who will stand at nothing to achieve his ideals, and that too includes ideals discussing morality.

Personality and insecurities

One of Kunikida’s remarkable personality traits is his determination. This is shown a lot in both the anime and the manga through how he sticks to his ideals, and how he will not go against what they say, regardless of the situation. It’s his determination to stay so attached to those ideals that makes him a target for enemies of the Armed Detective Agency. They always challenge his ideals in order to taunt him and get to beat him, but he sticks to them no matter what. He will forever stick to them.

Something that ties into his determination is how he is always willing to help others. It’s, most probably, due to his ideals, but he will go incredible lengths in order to help others. Due to that, he works at the Agency. It’s unclear why he joined and how did it happen, but it’s crystal clear that part of the reason, if not the whole reason, why he joined is so that he could help others. It, in its own way, gives him a purpose in life.

Two other traits that are quite noticeable about him are his intelligence and impatience. I do not have much to say about them, as they’re both pretty obvious about his character. There also isn’t really much depth to either of them, yet I still thought that they’re important enough to highlight, as they’re still important parts of his personality.

Now onto his insecurities. One that I believe is quite obvious is how he fears that he’s not living up to expectations. Usually, when someone has this as an insecurity, it’s due to someone else’s expectations, but in Kunikida’s case, it’s his own, through his ideals. He fears that he will not be able to achieve them, and that would mean that he is a failure of a person. He is too harsh on himself in this aspect, and it has been evident before in both the show and the manga

Something that ties with the aforementioned point in terms of insecurities is how he fears hurting people. He already has strict rules on himself and one of those rules is to not hurt people regardless of whether it was intentional or not. He simply does not want to cause pain to others, unless they deserve it, and he feels awfully guilty to those who have died or got hurt because of his actions, as shown in the Cannibalism arc in both the manga and the anime.

Ability

His ability, the Matchless Poet, is not based on one book or two, much like the other characters in Bungou Stray Dogs, but it’s based on all of his poems. Because I have not read any of his poems, I shall update this section once I do so.

Connections between the author and the character

Much like most of the Bungou Stray Dogs characters, there are similarities and differences between the character Kunikida and the author, and they are as follows: 1. The author has shown to be searching for idealism in one of his works, which was called Meat and Potatoes. This is similar to how the character is adamantly attached to his ideals.

2. The author got kicked out of school, which is something that the character, from what we know of him, will greatly disapprove of.

3. The author used to work as a Mathematics teacher, as well as an English and History teacher, much like his character counterpart, who used to work as that before joining the Agency.

4. Sasaki Nobuko, who was the Azure King’s lover, was actually the author's first wife who divorced him due to his financial issues.

5. The author was a close friend of fellow author Katai Tayama, whose character is also friends with the character counterpart of Kunikida.

Conclusion

Kunikida, in my opinion at least, is a very simple and straight-forward character. I never really found him all that interesting and I don’t like him or hate him. To me, he’s simply alright. However, after researching more about the author, I came to respect his character a bit more and realize how important he is to the series. That also happened when writing this analysis.

All I want to say about him is that he’s a lot overlooked, and I think that we, as a fandom, tend to ignore him at times when he shouldn’t be. He has interesting potential and interesting plotlines that could occur, and we just never really consider that.
