More tiny guests!! both requests and some I just thought of! I absolutely had to make Gab and Wells when someone asked for them
Gently handing them to you be nice to them (NO chewing)
(asks and animal choice ↓)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@fandomrouletteburrito, @rachi-roo, thank you! <3
Gab is a sea otter for: sea, floats, has special rock (island), needed friends not to lose himself, breaks open shells
Wells is a puma/cougar because of 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' by HG Wells (it's medical horror so watch out) for the puma-woman hybrid that killed Dr Moreau.
Yosano is a honey badger (please look at this video, warning for swearing) because they're metal as fuck and don't die from poison.
Atsushi. I tried to make him something else but I couldn't think of anything good and he had a whole arc about accepting the tiger. I let him have this one.
Ranpo is cat for Fukuzawa's sake (warning: this might actually make Fukuzawa explode)
Fukuzawa might hold the "lone wolf" title, but he's also the chill guy who has taken in all the other ADA members. He gets capybara'd.
Mori is a chipmunk here because we were talking about how they actually are omnivores and then I found this picture and couldn't stop laughing. Sometimes I'm shallow like that. (I'm open to suggestions for more fitting mammals with a matching Elise if you have one jhsdgfhjh)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Sigma is a rabbit because he's nervous and jumpy yet fierce and inexplicably just has that vibe 🐇

Mori Ougai’s belief as the boss is [...] “The boss stands on top of the organization, and at the same time, be the slave of all.” For the sake of the organization, the boss must always take the “logical optimal solution.” That is the duty of the boss. [...] “Therefore, no matter how much your heart aches, you have to ignore your personal feelings.”
Kafka Asagiri, for the BSD exhibition
On Mori and regret.
This man acts based on his perceived "optimal solution". It means relying on cold logic, detached from (his own and others') emotions. In that way, he fits right in as one of the smart characters of BSD, contrasting for example Dazai's way of working with/around people's feelings, and Fyodor's way of manipulating and twisting those feelings into monsters.
Mori remains cold, logical, distant, efficient. It meant disregarding Yosano's and the soldiers' deteriorating mental health during the war because the concept of an army that cannot be wiped out was too good. It meant following Natsume's plan and taking the old boss' place himself to fix Yokohama's underground and protect the city and its people. It also meant disposing of Mimic by sacrificing Oda in order to get the special ability business permit, despite (and perhaps because of) Dazai's attachment to the man.
The thing is, humans are not logical creatures, and will inevitably encounter conflicting emotions.
Tumblr media
(does this look like the face of a man without regrets to you?)
Mori in Dark Era tried to pass on to Dazai his practice of putting aside his own feelings for the sake of choosing the most efficient solution that will benefit the group. It backfired spectacularly, so much so even, that Mori regrets it to this day.
For the BSD exhibition, Asagiri wrote some individual character commentaries, all very interesting insights into their characters and the writing intentions. For Mori, here's what he wrote:
“He who fell out of the optimal solution” Mori Ougai’s belief as the boss is described in the novel “Dark Era” and “Dazai, Chuuya, Fifteen”. That is “The boss stands on top of the organization, and at the same time, be the slave of all.” For the sake of the organization, the boss must always take the “logical optimal solution.” That is the duty of the boss. There is an unspoken additional point to it. “Therefore, no matter how much your heart aches, you have to ignore your personal feelings.” We can catch a glimpse of that in this scene. [the ADA-PM alliance meeting] Mori’s expressions after “Burnt it.” and “Like what you did to your predecessor”, gave us a glimpse of his true feelings that were made sacrifices for the sake of the “logical optimal solution”. (By the way, it goes without saying that Dazai is inducing Mori’s thoughts by words that will make him regret the past. It is to make him decide to form an “alliance”.) source and translation: Popopretty
Tumblr media
(notice the inclusion of Hirotsu in this scene. Remember that later, Hirotsu suggests that Dazai knows why Mori did what he did to overthrow the old boss, which, in my opinion, is both a proof of Dazai's support in Mori's goal, and a reminder to uphold it.)
One of my favourite parts of the Dark Era light novel is a small scene during the epilogue that was not adapted into the anime. This is two weeks after Dazai defected:
Tumblr media
To quote Asagiri again, "Therefore, no matter how much your heart aches, you have to ignore your personal feelings." Mori is conflicted about the outcome of the Mimic incident. He holds in his hands the Silver Oracle he himself gave to Oda, and reflects on its purpose: to "help the man mentioned above without hesitation in the face of any and all trials". Didn't he fail to do just that with Oda? Didn't he set him up and sent him to his doom? Didn't he abandon him to his trial?
But he rationalizes the events by saying he got the permit they so badly needed. No matter if he sacrificed one of his men. No matter if he drove Dazai away. He accomplished his priceless goal. It was a total success.
And yet, he poorly folds a paper airplane with the very Silver Oracle he gave Oda, throws it, watches it crash immediately, and mourns the loss of his right-hand man, without ever moving on.
But we have a direct example of Mori expressing regret.
Tumblr media
The perception that Mori in BEAST is a completely different character than Mori is in canon, when that perception doesn't extend to any other character from that universe, rubs me the wrong way. The characters in BEAST are very similar to their canon selves, with some core traits getting a new twist. They are all one or two major life changes away from becoming these versions of themselves. As far as we know, Mori's only life-altering event was being forcefully removed from the Port Mafia by Dazai, and secretly put in charge of Atsushi's old orphanage.
Tumblr media
Mori unambiguously made that orphanage a better place, as stated by Atsushi himself. BEAST!Mori is a lot softer, vulnerable and honest. That Mori offers to be a father to Atsushi while he heals. He also expresses regret in not being able to help Dazai when he was in his care.
Tumblr media
I think it's very interesting, especially when knowing that Asagiri wrote both BEAST and Fifteen at the same time for the Dead Apple movie, because in Fifteen we have this:
Tumblr media
The beginning of the first chapter of Fifteen is a gold mine. It is narrated from Mori's point of view, the man of logic and calculations, and yet it is full of doubt. He is alone and struggling to fix everything with so many people against him. But, throughout this scene about grasping at the Port Mafia's power, there is also this secondary thought being woven in, of Mori having started to actually care for Dazai.
The teenager is scary to him, smart enough to be a threat should he decide to be done with all this and turn against him, and yet, he immediately (and with a hint of sadness) finds that Dazai reminds him of himself. This lonely, lonely man found a kindred spirit, bright enough to grasp any situation in seconds and prone to using an uncomfortable obsession to divert and keep you guessing his true intentions. Mori entered Mentor Mode™ then. He taught Dazai his ways, he shared his struggles and thought process, he fought tooth and nail to keep him alive.
So when he asked Dazai why he wanted to die, it was with the concern of someone who has started to care. It was with the mind of someone who is trying to prevent the worst by fixing the problem at its source.
Tumblr media
(translation: Reneray)
But it's also that self-projection/ability to relate that made him drive Dazai away, when he pushed too hard and forced Dazai to adhere to his optimal solution philosophy. Because Dazai cannot separate himself from his attachments, could not ignore his emotions like Mori does, and chose Oda over Mori's logic. From Dazai's point of view, that was betrayal. Mori and him were accomplices!
Dazai planted the idea that Mori was afraid of him taking over as boss, and Mori seems to agree with that thought (would it be because he feared for his life, or for Dazai's ability to replace him?) Yet, for a man afraid of his closest subordinate backstabbing him, he seems to be hanging on quite hard to the possibility of Dazai coming back, leaving his seat open to this day, inviting him back twice in the same arc, and...
Tumblr media
(yeah I used this picture at the start too. "I hAvE nO rEgReTs" he says)
Mori may try to convince himself he feels no regrets and no guilt over his own actions by weighting gains and losses objectively, but he still hurts and has a very hard time moving on. He's human despite his best efforts, prone to mistakes and doubts. He's lonely and wishes to impart his knowledge onto others. His cold logic has both helped him in fixing the city, and alienated him from some of the people he most cared about.
In a similar vein, should the ADA employee transfer be of topic again, and should Mori clash with Yosano again, I wish we get to see some similar conflicting emotions in Mori between the usefulness of Yosano's ability, and Yosano herself as a person. The war was 14 years ago, that's a long time, and I want to believe that counts for something.

i always find it lowkey funny whenever i read angst fics where mori goes on a rampage because of dazai's defection...
because bro knew he was leaving. he literally let him.
it's not shown in the anime--which is probably what most of these fics are based off--but in the epilogue of the dark era light novel, it's stated that mori is aware that he was going to lose dazai because of all this, and let him leave while leaving the executive seat open for him should he ever come back. now, did mori anticipate that dazai was going to join the ada? probably not, but as we see in the original timeline,
it's just funny to me because people usually use this as a reason to write whump, especially towards chuuya basically going "chuuya why dont you know where dazai is etc etc" or of dazai being taken back and tortured for leaving, but like. mori knew he was leaving and accepted it. dazai didn't know that mori was anticipating it, which is why he acts surprised when dazai says that mori forced him out of the port mafia, with him saying that he thought dazai left willingly. they have two different perspectives of what happened during dark era because of the knowledge each of them has.
there is no way that mori knew oda told dazai to go fight on the side of good after oda's death, as that was said to dazai by himself, however. that is where the disconnect is on mori's part. he probably expected that dazai would eventually come back after grieving oda's death, so he had no clue that dazai would just end up going to another organization--leaving his seat open for him because of that.
i don't know. dark era thoughts while i work on my timeline

'•.¸♡Switching clothes.♡¸.•'
I got this idea by watching Jarvis Johnson do a review of high school musical two.
Basically how would they react to their s/o wearing their clothes after they have a quicky round a public area, e.g. if you have a quicky in the bathroom at work and come out wearing each others clothes. It's hard to explain.

Enjoy! Feat. Kunikida, Dazai, Ranpo, Mori, Akutagawa, Ango, Fyodor, Nikolai.
Tumblr media
Doppo Kunikida:
He would think that having sex at work is highly inappropriate and would never do it, but, if you do some how exchange clothing he will absolutely love it.
It shows that he's a part of you and you are a part of him in a way.
He isn't the possessive kind and wouldn't see wearing each others clothes as a way to show that you belong to each other but are a part of each other or being in a relationship.
He wouldn't wear your whole outfit but if you "accidentally" wear his shirt he wouldn't mind.
Obviously the item of clothing has to atleast resemble things he wears.
Osamu Dazai:
Man, he fucking love's when you wear each others clothes.
He would pick up something of yours pitting it on and when you ask him to give it back he'll just make up an excuse and you have to wear his clothes.
He is more on the possessive type and probably does it for others to know that he's with you but he also does it because he thinks you look cute in his clothes.
He's also a little thief of your stuff and your wardrobes would mix together until no one knew who owns what.
Ranpo Edogawa:
He thinks you look cute with his hat or coat thing but he isn't necessarily one to give you his whole outfit.
He also wouldn't want to randomly wear something different in the middle of the day.
Ogai Mori:
Yet another way to show off how you are his and another way to scare anyone away from you.
He wants you all to himself and for everyone to know that so what better way than to randomly leave and come back wearing each other's clothes? People will know you boned and if they don't then they definitely know not to hit on you if they want to keep all their limbs.
He also thinks you look hot in his clothes.
Ryūnosuke Akutagawa:
He doesn't fuck at work... usually.
There are times when the two of you just cannot wait and end up doing it somewhere away from the others or while away on a mission.
During those moments you could try and swipe his clothes away and hope he doesn't notice but he does, maybe he pretends he doesn't from time to time to see you walking around with his jabot tie or his shirt.
He wouldn't let you have his coat, his coat is a way he can protect you both.
Ango Sakaguchi:
He is way too busy to do such things but if you do, he wouldn't realize you switched his clothes out for yours, he is too sleep-deprived to pay attention to his clothes.
Once he comes to the realisation (or someone points it out to him) he will quickly as you to change back into his own clothes.
He doesn't see any meaning behind wearing each others clothes, he just wants to wear his own clothes and get back to work (and also sleep).
Fyodor Dostoevsky:
He doesn't see people often so changing clothes would only mean you seeing people while wearing Fyodor's clothes.
He would only agree on wearing your clothes if they were warmer than his.
It wouldn't bother him if people assumed you two just slept together while at work or that you were his and he was yours and no one could take you away from him, he would enjoy those thoughts roaming other people's minds actually.
He isn't one to fuck at work though so good luck getting killed after stealing his ushanka or Cape.
God forbid you do a poor impression with the worst Russian accent in the world of Fyodor while wearing his clothes, he will literally kill you, no second thoughts.
Nikolai Gogol:
He would fucking love it when you switched clothes.
He finds it hilarious but he loves it. You will get laughed at by him (and possibly others) when wearing his clothes because of how silly they are, especially the silly little hat, he is so silly.
He will probably keep his cape thing because it is very important to have on hand if anything happens.
Over all fucking loves it when you wear his clothes and also loves fucking at work.

The Misunderstanding of Mori(BSD)
I have realized Mori is a misunderstood character in BSD due to his abilities name, Vita Sexualis.  I recently finished reading the book, and the title is misleading.  I assumed it was an erotic book; I could not have been more wrong.  It’s a story about Kanai(MC), who is writing about his sexual experiences intended for his son to be provided as a means of sexual education.  It is not inappropriate whatsoever, and the act of sex is never described in detail.
Tumblr media
Throughout the story, you come to understand Kanai and how he has a lack of sexual desire.  The story starts when he is a child, and adults tease him for his innocence.  It was disgusting seeing adults toy with his innocence, especially since the story starts when he is six.
Later in the story, when Kanai is close to graduating from university, his parents think it would be best for him to marry.  A meeting is set up for Kanai to meet a girl whom he finds nice.  But he debates the difference between this girl and all other nice girls.  He also questions if most men settle for a nice girl due to their sexual desire.  Since Kanai has a low sex drive, he believes this is the reason he can’t settle.  I believe he is bringing up the difference between love and sexual desire. Also, how sexual desire can act like love.
Here is a quote about Kanai's thoughts on marriage,
"I suspected that some probably decided under the stimulus of sexual desire. Because I was deficient in this area, I guessed that even if I felt the young lady was quite nice, the deficiency was probably why I didn't want to marry her."
There is an incredible tetralogy called The Sea of Fertility by Yukio Mishima, which discusses the downsides of sexual desire. In the first book, Spring Snow, Kiyoaki(MC) becomes infatuated with Satoko. He lets his desires control him and wishes Satoko to marry him, but she is engaged. Instead of putting her happiness first, Kiyoaki lets sexual possession take control of him, leading to his demise.
In the third book, Temple of Dawn, Imanishi created his own story, "The Land of the Pomegranate." It's about how sexual love leads to possession.  As soon as the people in this world reach peak desire, they are discarded.  This stops sexual possession from taking over.
I bring up these books to further show the difference between love and sexual desire. And how controlling this feeling can be with it acting like love.
I believe the author(Ogai Mori) is trying to tell the readers you are most capable of love when young because you have no experience. Sexual desire can be extremely passionate to the point where it controls you. In the story, Kanai reflects how once a month, his roommate Koga would let his sexual desires loose. While he personally found no importance in those activities. I find it vital to state even though he doesn't care for sex, it doesn't mean he wants to be alone. In the story, he says,
"Yet even though I had a longing for love and affection, I didn't feel, as one normally would have expected, any real sexual drive."
Now to connect this back to BSD, I believe Elise is a child to represent innocence. Maybe Mori himself is like Kanai and does not care for sexual relations. And what is the opposite of that? A child who knows nothing of sex and does not care for it. They do not have sexual desires, and it has nothing to do with their type of love. Elise might simply be someone for Mori to love and receive the same type of love back. Or she represents his innocence and the type of love he craves.
Tumblr media
I believe she could also represent his hidden innocence because when you are older you wouldn't want to be called innocent or pure. It's embarrassing to be labeled a virgin or not understand a sexual joke. But not everyone cares for these things, and some yearn for a different type of love, one that is not sexual.
Hopefully, people will stop labeling this character as a pedo and look for the meaning behind his ability instead.

chapter two : an unwanted dinner
➪ sypnosis : you have a talk with mori about his plans
➪ other notes : literally so happy to be writing this fic, i’ll create a masterlist for it soon, i just need a title yk ? like i said before, by “present date” i mean 14 ! era, not actual canon manga / anime present date
➪ warnings : mentions of suicide, hanging, overdose, reader being called “my dear” by mori in a fatherly way, lowkey mori guilt tripping reader at the end
➪ prologue | chapter one | chapter two
Tumblr media
*present date*
“i’m home,” you took off your shoes by the doorway, a habit you picked up on from mori. “you’re here later than usual,” he said from the kitchen, analyzing some papers. he looked exhausted, his button up shirt was disheveled, hair tied back messily. “i stopped a boy from killing himself,” you said calmly. mori looked up at you, in curiosity, a smile creeping up.
“oh ? how so ?” he asked, his full attention now to you. “he was going to hang himself on a branch that had a bird’s nest,” you quietly said, placing your grocery bags on the counter, taking all the products out. “have you seen this boy before ?” mori asks. you nod, “you treated him once, osamu dazai,” his eyes widened at your words. “the boy with the overdose ?”
you nod again, you clearly remembered. you found dazai two months ago, on the side of the road near mori’s home. his mouth was bubbling but you could see him attempting to crawl. you remember dropping everything and carrying him home, begging mori to help him. you remember taking off his sweater, noticing a name on the size tag, “osamu dazai.”
“well there’s no point in helping and wasting supplies if he keeps trying to die,” mori’s words struck you. “but you’re a doctor, doctors help people, you helped me,” you said. “my dear, doctors help people who seek that help, that boy doesn’t seem to be seeking anything but death,” the doctor says, annoyance visible in his voice as he continues his paperwork.
you could argue, but you don’t, you want to have dinner instead. so you cook a short meal for the doctor and for yourself. when you finish, mori scoots all of his papers to the side, quietly thanking you for the meal. you can tell he’s thinking, as if he wants to ask you something. “is everything okay,” you ask, your stomach starting to swirl with fear.
“i’m going to work for the mafia,” your eyes widened. you knew mori wasn’t one of the good doctors but the mafia ? “w-what,” you stutter. “the boss is dying, he doesn’t have much time left,” he says, stuffing a forkful of food into his mouth. “but you always say that old people should simply rest, death can’t be prevented,” you say, almost frantic, food still in mouth.
“first, you mustn’t talk with a mouthful, it’s rude, secondly, you’re right i have said that, your memory is keen,” he says, calmly eating his food. “then what’s the point of getting involved with the mafia,” you ask, mumbling the last part as if anyone could hear you. “i will kill the boss to inherit his position,” mori states, eyes locking with your wide ones.
you didn’t say anything. “this is the second time i’ve seen such expression on your face,” mori smiles at you. he was right, it was a extremely rare for you to have genuine emotion besides nonchalance. “i just- i don’t agree with this, it’s too dangerous,” it was almost like you were pleading. mori’s eyes squinted in frustration at your words.
“wouldn’t it be nice to live somewhere better, somewhere that doesn’t have pests, somewhere that isn’t in the shabby part of yokohama,” mori proposed. you knew he was right, the place you both lived in wasn’t the best per say. it was a one bedroom and one bathroom apartment. yet you couldn’t be ungrateful, it was better than sleeping on the concrete in a cardboard box.
“your beautiful ability will come in handy,” the doctor says, finishing his food. “i have to help ?” you quietly ask. “i would say i’ve kept you safe, with clothes and a belly full enough for you to help me,” mori says, getting up, putting his dirty plate in the sink. once again, he was right, he took care of you and your needs, you couldn’t refuse, you owed him your life.

Fukuzawa was fucking devastated, he has never left such sadness and disappointment in his entire life.
How dare a cat not like him!
He tries bribing the cat with treats and stuff.
He's even more disappointed when your cat prefers Mori.
Mori of all people!
Fukuzawa is sad, he wants the cat but kitty doesn't like him :(
The cat will grow to like him eventually.
Mori thinks it's funny that the cat prefers him.
Mori might not even notice that the cat runs away whenever Fukuzawa sits near by never when you or him do, but he quickly cathes on.
He let's Elise torture play with the poor kitty.
The cat probably doesn't like Fukuzawa cuz he smells like other cats.
