Watching a 14 year old 8th grader

Things I have been told/asked:

She showed me EVERY Pokémon and made me judge them and then told me I was wrong about every single one

Why Luka is a better boyfriend than Adrien Agreste (thankfully something I could understand)

Made me explain the entire plot of Steven Universe bc she saw one episode but couldn’t find the rest

That she is in love with a Splatoon character

Explained the full Five Nights at Freddie’s Lore (maybe better than MatPat who, by the way, she has no idea who he is)

Asked me about those Urban Legend Horror games like Bloody Mary and the Elevator game and then proceeded to have to sleep with every light on bc she was scared

Told me she doesn’t swear and doesn’t respect people who swear and that she has cut off friends who swear. I have to apologize every time I accidentally curse because of this.

She had me read 14 pokemon ffs on fanfiction.net to make sure there wasn’t any adult content.

In that same vein told me that she had learned how to use ao3 filters (something I had accidentally taught her how to do last time I watched her)

Asked me if I knew what Dokidoki literature club is and made me read 5 of those fanfictions too to make sure there was no adult content (there obviously was. How she ended up in dokidokiliterature is beyond me. She said it was because she is in love with Monika)

Made me read the ao3 ship stats and then asked me about every single fandom/show etc

Quick rundown of what she said when I explained them: Hannibal “remind me never to watch that”, Harry Potter “no one even cares about Harry Potter. Is Dumbledore gay?”, Supernatural “why are ppl shipping brothers” and then I explained destiel and how he got sent to hell and then she got mad at me for saying Hell, 911 “why does 911 have a fandom? People being hurt isn’t funny” I had to pick around a bit but realized she thought that 911 emergency calls were being made into fanfiction, BTS “who even are these people”, My Hero Academia “an anime? I don’t watch it. Is there any Comiket Communicate in the top ten?”, MCR “what’s that” I showed her some music and mvs “why do people like this it’s weird” to which I explained ppl were emo bc I didn’t know how else to explain and she said “my friend is a tall and skinny emo” and then wandered off

Made fun of me for thinking 53 degrees was cold. (We live in California. It is cold)

A dream she had where her friends are baking cookies but her one friend who she calls her little brother climbed into the oven

The fact that her friend group play house and she is the oldest sister

While roleplaying as a family they also roleplay that they can all turn into Eevees (this is not a one time game. They have done this for three years)

Asked me why there are so many fanfictions about BTS because she doesn’t understand how ppl can ship real people

While I was trying to explain it I accidentally mentioned the Dan and Phil real people shipping problem and she proceeded to ask me about who they are. I tried to be vague but she kept asking questions until I explained their whole online career.

Asked me what Doctor Who was and what he was a Doctor in.

Made me watch Friday Night Funkin modded videos for what felt like six hours and then had me watch her play animal crossing.

Told me that boyfriend from Friday night funkin was not good enough for girlfriend and that girlfriend should be with Sky from the Sky Mod (I don’t know what these words mean but I’m sure I agree)

Explained an Eevee YouTube fanfiction series in its entirety.

Wandered back and forth across the living room in front of me listening to music in headphones breathing incredibly loudly making me incredibly overstimulated (she’s got a cold it’s not her fault)

Explained her entire friend groups sexuality, gender and pronouns, mental illness, and the Eevee evolution they are when the rp.

Btw the first time I met her she asked me if I had ever had a fictional crush, I said yes, and she said “I only have girl fictional crushes” which through her mother for a loop she told me later, not bc she’s homophobic (she’s literally a lesbian) but because she had never met me before and was surprised how open she was around me.

Today proceeded to try to explain the nuances of bisexuality vs pansexualty. She has never been on tumblr or twitter but was definitely aware of the arguments.

Asked me what one direction is

Got mad that I named a character in a Pilot for a college film class after a girl who is her friend at a math tutoring place who I of course have never met and then yelled at me until I changed the name. I didn’t but she doesn’t know that.

Told me I need to vacuum my car. I do.

Handed me a warhead and watched me eat it with the most malicious look on her face as though she was tricking me or something.

Cooked all of her meals by herself, gets up and leaves for school on her own, does all her hw immediately, doesn’t swear, let’s the dog out every morning. Literally the most self sufficient child I have ever met (was able to do all of this three years ago when I started watching her) the only reason I’m here is in case of a freak accident or because she freaks herself out at night at can’t sleep.

Then she puts the pot she used to cook pasta on the floor for the dog to lick up…

Im 15 years old, I'm a Pisces, I'm autistic and I have adhd. My religion is paganism, and my favorite colors are pastels but I prefer pink. I'm also biracial, I'm half white and half black.

I'm very much interested in Japanese fashion like fairy kei, visual kei, gyaru, gurokawa, idk if this also counts but pastel goth. And Yamikawaii.

I'd say my favorite videogames are fnaf, I used to like yandere simulator but I don't anymore because of yandere Dev. I hate Yandere Dev. I also like Minecraft but the developer notch is a game dev from absolute hell. I also love any of the shin megami tensei games. I love any vocaloid videogame. I also love the game obey me shall we date, doki doki literature club, genshin impact, and sky. Some videogames I do wanna play is Diabolik lovers, hello kitty island adventure, bendy and the ink machine, style savvy, Stray, iron lung, and class of '09.

I don't really pay attention to band members so don't call me a fake fan. I just listen to the music.

By the way. I also love kpop. My favorite groups are bts, blackpink, new jeans, itzy, gidle, red velvet, nct and twice.

My favorite artists is Melanie Martinez, Tyler the creator, and Hatsune Miku.

I also love a ton of anime and manga as well as video games. I also love food too. It may change a lot depending on my mood.

• for musa, i feel like she’d focus more on the lyrics. in BTS’ songs there’s so many references to literature, etc. in their lyrics & production! in their songs, especially in LYS:T! especially the tracks: singularity, the truth untold, 134340, and tear. i feel like musa would love breaking down & analyzing the lyrics/production? however i don’t think she’d relate to any of these tracks? because the album is about a toxic relationship, and i don’t think of rivusa like that

• i can aisha enjoying k-pop mainly for the performances! so i chose serendipity, black swan, and wave, which are all contemporary dances i believe? in here, aisha meets anne, her first friend who taught her dance, and described it as “freedom.” i believe anne is doing ballet there? the songs i chose are all elegant (?), which is an aspect aisha doesn’t embrace. however, i chose the songs because i feel like it somewhat ties back into anne? ok also i picked these because these are very gorgeous performances + i love how emotional? these dances are

- as for the song meaning, it’s actually the opposite of what aisha believes in. serendipity, is feeling that you’re fated to be with someone. as for black swan, is the fear of losing your passion for music. however, i find wave to be fitting!!because it’s the desire for freedom from your busy life

• run bts is such a fun performance oh my god. on the contrast, i can see aisha enjoying a lot of energetic songs while exercising.

• here is a clip of aisha dancing, she’s mostly posing a lot in between! so, i thought of FEARLESS & ANTIFRAGILE by LE SSERAFIM, both tracks about achieving your goal & of encouragement, fitting for aisha! :)

AUGHHH my browser crashed halfway through writing this answer. whatever. lets try again! these are mostly ravenwood/wizard city asks also btw. if u want me to talk about any other world i will be happy to do so !

ravenwood has literature classes! they’re required for your first three years, and then optional unless you’re a myth wizard/you need them to complete some sort of other program. spiral “classics” definitely have different ‘themes’ and tropes, and most of them have to do with interactions between different magics/magic users, or in the case of more historical classics, the struggle between magical societies and societies that oppress, outlaw, or suppress magic. some common tropes, stemming either from the collective imagination over many years or from ancient folklore/creation lore are

fire and ice conflict / the dynamics of fire ice and storm’s conflict - a trope borne from the original titans and the first world story.

death and life wizards acting as each others carers, as people who balance each other out in terms of personality, or as each others impulse control. this sort of trope strikes almost uncomfortably after malistaire left ravenwood, and the most notable example is a long epic of two conquering warlords who eventually ally at the conference table for reasons even they cannot understand. 

though not exactly a trope, there are looooots of boring snore ass books about the imperial powers. marleybone, polaris, valencia, monquista, etc. 

lots of tragedies featuring balance wizards, or wizards who practice a discipline similar to balance. RIP

the alchemy club weren’t the only illegal club operating in ravenwood. in fact, there were over 20 -- some illegal only because they didn’t have an advisor and some illegal because genuinely Don’t Do That, and the alchemy club nearly destroying ravenwood sent them all into hiding. the most noteworthy illegal clubs that work in ravenwoods “underbelly” are the metalworking club, the cardmaking/spellmaking club, beastmoon betting, and the catering club. well, the catering club isn’t a club. it’s a couple of stoner fire students who sell the best damn culinary creations in ravenwood out of their dorm rooms if you got the gold. or the grendleweed. try the chicken tacos!

the various “towers”, (i.e, ice tower, fire tower) are much larger than seen in game. not only do they house a professor’s office, but they also have levels above that act as sort of “specialty housing” for upperclassmen wizard students! most of them also have a floor or two roped off for school specific experiments or for temporary lecturers to live.

speaking of upperclassmen, the system of progression at ravenwood is not at all linear. you still need a certain amount of credits to graduate, but what defines a “grade level” and when you pass through it is very nebulous. i imagine ravenwood as a place for students from about u.s middle school (7th grade or 12 years old) to early college (sophmore-junior in u.s college or 20 years old), but students will often stay later than that to either do wizard grad school (hiiii abner!) or to work in the city surrounding the school, or they may start earlier than that if they need accommodations adjusting to the new environment or early tutoring to succeed in main classes.

the young wizard (if u choose to believe in this bit of lore) was not the only one isekai’d from earth to come attend ravenwood. in fact, it’s not an uncommon occurrence to see a couple of kids a year from earth! and with them, they bring their culture. every now and then, along with the mingling of cultures of other worlds, wizard city gets an infusion of earth culture. this can get a bit awkward when the last anybody heard the hip singer on earth was selena gomez and then suddenly it’s like, bts or something. and the newbie wizard kid who can barely hold a wand starts laughing at you when you mention hannah montana. for example, my storm wizard is from earth, and her goth friend pretty much owns her old ipod she brought from earth. because he likes the mcr on it. lmfao.

along with that earth culture comes knowledge of earth technology -- which is not unlike technology from other worlds, though similarities are sparsely distributed. some things are like marleybone, some things are like empryea, etc. earth technology is mostly considered a trend or a novelty to wizard city inhabitants! once stuff like cellphones got picked up by students, they were quickly reproduced by storm engineering students, but with not much actual purpose for a while other than the novelty fun of having an earth thing that can flip open and closed without magic and make your friends earth thing make an obnoxious noise of their choice.

the spiral cup is more than dueling, dueling is just what ravenwood focuses on as more of a dueling magic school, and what we see as a strong fighting protagonist. the spiral cup also includes olympics-style sports, with divisions at every age range. the most watched are ice school sports (ice and speed skating, hockey, ice volleyball <-- can get bloody) storm school sports (water sports, an escape-room esque game that carries the threat of electrocution) and beastmoon play, with other, non school specific sports trailing behind.

musicology is an elective! halston balestrom teaches it :)

life students have a scary amount of power in the school. a lot of 'campus jobs' are filled by life students. emergency clinic? life students! TAs and aides? a lot of them are life students. the positions are competitive. and they are so tired <3.

kids can go to other worlds on field trips or internship opportunities! i choose to believe much of arc 1 is just various internships my wizards go on lol.
