Spuffy Realizations: Seasons 2-4
A huge reason that I love Buffy and Spike together so much is that nearly every episode has one or both of them realizing something that draws them closer to having a relationship with each other. I noticed while making this that Spike had the most revelations that he's falling for Buffy in Seasons 2-4, and Buffy starts noticing things in Seasons 5-7.
02/03- Spike realizes that Buffy’s different from any other Slayer.
02/06- Spike realizes that Buffy looks really good as a brunette.
02/07- Buffy realizes that she’ll let Spike eat her betrayer, as a treat.
02/10- Spike realizes that Buffy is the gnat in his ear, the gristle in his teeth, the bloody thorn in his bloody side.
02/11- Spike and Buffy realize they’d rather be fighting each other.
02/14- Spike realizes that the only way to kill Buffy is to love her.
02/17- Spike realizes that going after Buffy’s friends only results in a brassed-off Slayer, not a weakened Slayer.
02/21- Spike realizes he can’t wait to tell his friends (Buffy) that he has a big rock. See this post by @disco-tea
02/22- Spike realizes that he’d like to partner up with Buffy to take down Angel. Buffy realizes that the enemy of her enemy is your friend is all she’s got.
03/08- Buffy and Spike realize they have fun fighting side by side. See this post by @l0veisntbrains
04/03- Spike realizes he’s inexplicably attracted to blondes now.
04/07- Spike realizes that he holds Buffy in extremely high regard.
04/08- Spike realizes that Buffy is a person he can turn to when he’s in need (again).
04/09- Spike realizes that marrying Buffy will make him the happiest man on Earth. Buffy realizes that maybe they fought because they couldn’t admit how they really felt about each other. See this post by @raisedbythetv89
04/10- Buffy realizes it’s nearly impossible to have a loving and honest romantic relationship with a normal guy.
04/11- Buffy realizes she would like a partner who can hold his own in a fight and support her.
04/12- Spike realizes he would have liked a proper sendoff from Buffy.
04/13- Buffy realizes that she really enjoys having sex right after fighting.
04/14- Spike realizes that Buffy has tragic taste in men which definitely doesn’t peak his interest.
04/15- Spike realizes that he has no interest in any Slayer that isn’t Buffy.
04/16- Spike realizes that he really likes Buffy getting in his personal space and describing what she could do to him.
04/17- Spike realizes that he would really like some alone time with Betty to face her one-on-one. Buffy realizes she doesn’t like Spike treating her like she’s not a threat.
04/18- Spike realizes he cares about Buffy’s wellbeing enough that he considers helping to rescue her (for a few seconds).
04/19- Buffy realizes she has a nuanced view of good and evil, and she doesn’t like people who see in black and white.
04/20- Spike realizes he doesn’t have a valid reason anymore for not killing Buffy. See this post.
04/21- Spike realizes he doesn’t want to get staked by Buffy or leave town because he’s in love with her just because, so he better make things right with her in the only way she’ll consider valid: saving her friends.

Seeing all of this transphobic, anti-queer rhetoric, the Kids Online Safety Act - all aimed at silencing and censoring queer people and queerness in general is making me think of the “Gingerbread” episode in season 3 of buffy:
All the moms band together to burn their own children alive for ironically, the sake of “the children” who turn out to not even be real but just an evil demon in disguise. And that is EXACTLY what conservatives do anytime they went to pass something hateful they invoke “it’s for the safety of our children!! HOW can you say no to keeping our children safe???” Always invoking this idea of innocence that must be protected at all cost. Meanwhile the very real children of our country are separated from their parents, have SCHOOL LUNCH DEBT and go hungry, their parents have to leave them with day care staff or nannies to work WAYYYY too soon because parental leave does not exist in the US and most households rely on dual incomes and far worse things that require a trigger warning that if you are paying attention you know all too well what I’m referring to. The US is doing a HORRIFIC job of actually protecting the emotional, physical, and mental well being of children so it’s honestly such a joke and I cannot believe anyone is still falling for the “it’s for the kids” line when they now sell bullet proof backpacks….
That episode aired in January of 1999 for crying out loud.
I know the episode itself it a little hokey but my god I was speechless the first time I saw it because it so perfectly illustrated this mob mentality and fear mongering that can lead parents to do absolutely horrible things to their own children because they’ve been manipulated into believing it’s necessary to protect this concept of innocence from harm and how in the episode it was so easy it was to deem their own children - mostly teen girls - as evil and demonic and in need of being destroyed and how many parents in our world sacrifice the wellbeing of their own children because they have been manipulated by religion or politics to do so, all the while so fervently believing they are in the right and that abusing or disowning your children is the right thing to do for the sake of society as a whole.
The episode uses witchcraft and devil worship as the red herring which was very much what was used at the time in the US and now it has shifted to drag queens, trans people, and queer culture in general as this bogeyman type thing out to get your kids so you better get them before they get you! It is so transparent and literally such fucking bullshit it is so frustrating to see so many people still fall for this tactic that has been used literally forever to mobilize people into hating each other so the people in power can stay there.
And of course my beloved Jane was one of the writers for this ep. I fucking love her with my whole heart she is an absolute genius who just gets it and this is why such a campy supernatural show has such longevity, the themes of the episodes are timeless and were often so ahead of it’s time when it first aired.

No idea if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I despise the Willow x Xander romance in season 3. Not only are they cheating but I also think it's kinda gross honestly, they have such a sweet friendship and I don't see any reason why the writers thought of ruining it. Like I know it was the 90's so a guy and a girl couldn't just be friends but c'mon

I hate watching Lover’s Walk with the best of them, but it’s actually a really tight, really great episode, and I see a lot of teen shows not try to emulate the same formula, and fail every time, and the problem is they lack emotional weight and audience investment. When Oz and Willow, Xander and Cordelia break up, it’s because Willow and Xander have been cheating, for at least 2 episodes now, and that all comes to a head when they’re kidnapped by Spike. The weight of their transgression is added in this episode because, we’re focused on them. But the thing that makes it suck so much, is because Ozillow/Xordelia haven’t just been...off screen somewhere not doing anything. We’ve seen them with Buffy, being couples. We’ve watched them both get together, make milestones in their respective relationships:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then just being couples on screen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So by the time we get to Lover’s Walk, when it’s clear that both Cordelia and Oz have gotten serious about their relationships, and the guilt Xander and Willow have bubbles over, the stakes of the breakup feels *real*.
Not to mention, Spike being at his BEST in BTVS when he just shows up and blows up every single one of the scooby’s lives. Xander, Willow, and then forcing Buffy to confront her feelings for Angel and putting distance between them, while he does shit like this:
Tumblr media
is just so GOOD.
I also love the added detail that Cordelia gets impaled. Because based on their characters, Cordelia had just admitted to Buffy she loved Xander. And that was huge for her as a character. We see her as basically a man eater up until this point, and she really falls for Xander. So it’s arguable that, while the cheating hurt, like Oz, she could make her way back to him. But not after falling through the stairs and getting impaled trying to save Xander while he’s making out with Willow. The humiliation alone, would ensure that she could never go back. And it’s only compounded when she returns to school. Cordelia had the most to lose by dating Xander, and the show makes good on that loss.
This episode was *such* a good study on the characters and relationships of the show, and using everything we’ve seen up until now to put us through the ringer emotionally, while also making us laugh, and shows now are doggedly dragging us through an overcomplicated plot, that we have no investment in the characters, so attempting these kinds of character moments in a random episode doesn’t land, because there’s engagement and without engagement we can’t emotionally invest. BTVS leveraged our investment and threw us into these emotional rollercoasters every so often by following through on the consequences of the behaviour of the characters. That’s what makes a show iconic.

Listen, hear me out. Faith and the Mayor. I understand he's evil. I understand she's lost and gone rogue for the worst.
But their love for one another is very pure. And it makes my heart ache when they lose each other. Cause that's real grief no matter who it lives inside and it's portrayed so we'll that it's tangible.
Found family, even in darkness, gets right to my heart sometimes.

The Zeppo. What an episode. Buffy and the gang battling a huge finale-worthy threat whilst we get to run around Sunnydale with Xander and his uncle's Chevy raising the dead and stopping the school from getting blown up. Definitely a favourite episode so far this season, alongside Lovers Walk.

Buffy S03E21/S03E22: Graduation Day Part 1/Part 2
Wow. Graduation Day. What a finale these two episodes make. Still don’t get why the Mayor would want to turn into that thing but whatever - his character made for a brilliant villain across the season nonetheless. It is kind of a shame to see him go.
Xander talks a couple of times about not getting out of graduation alive, even at one point saying something about a dream he had. Obviously, we know that Buffy has had dreams come true in the past. It’s not so likely that Xander would have such premonitions but I do wonder if this little subplot was part of the writers way to try and up the ante regarding the impending battle. Aside from Jenny in season 2, the main gang have been relatively untouchable and Xander’s comments seem to be a way to suggest that this may not be the case this time. There were also a couple of times across this season - particularly in the Zeppo - where Xander was described as expendable so this part of the story seems to play off all that and hint towards his life being at stake. Ultimately, of course, he does get out of it okay and lives to fight through another season.
There are more scenes between Xander and Anya in these episodes. She certainly shows an interest in him but has no clue how to act upon those feelings which is an interesting dynamic. Ultimately, Anya serves as a kind of exposition-y role in this episode as she’s seen an ascension before fills in the gaps that the gang have about the ascension; the Mayor isn’t just become a demon, he’s becoming a demon because the demons we have seen so far in this show aren’t full demons. The Mayor plans to become something bigger and more destructive.
She was too scared by what she had seen in the previous ascension to stick around and help fight so she left after providing that information. Before she did leave, she tried to convince Xander to leave with her. I found myself being reminded of the episode ‘The Zeppo’ during this scene, not only did the scene begin with Xander being sent to fetch something but he turns down her offer to leave with her and when she tells him “you’re going to die if you stay here.” he replies with “I guess I might.” It just echoes his “I like the quiet” and the way he stared down the bomb in the Zeppo and just further emphasises his willingness to risk his life for the rest of the gang. Anya leaves alone. Things between her and Xander were left pretty open so I’m pretty sure it’s not the last we’ll see of her and I’m very interested to see more of her character.
Considering Buffy was all for the prom in the previous episode, she is very anti-Graduation in this episode. “Graduation is a pointless ceremony” seems quite a strong viewpoint (though one which, being English, I can’t help but sort of agree with). I guess the difference here is that she has known for a while now that her Graduation would be another day in her life which wouldn’t be normal. Prom was her one chance at having that normal moment. I’m a big fan of the scene between Buffy and Joyce when Buffy is packing her mom’s thing. The sarcastic “is some terrible demon going to attack the school?” comment followed by the realisation followed by the casual “maybe I should have sent you to a different school” as opposed to immediate panic just demonstrates how Joyce has come to somewhat accept that this is just a part of Buffy’s life. Nevertheless, Buffy’s ‘I know sometimes you wish I weren’t like this. I wish I could be normal for you. But I’m not.’ (paraphrasing) speech hit hard.
Angel gets poisoned by Faith which is an interesting action because it is that act which, ultimately seals her fate. The poison is a distraction technique to keep Buffy out of the Mayor’s way by harming someone she cares about. But they seem to miscalculate just how much Buffy cares for Angel and how far she is willing to go for him. For the poison is killing him and there’s only one cure; for him to drink the blood of a Slayer. That knowledge puts Faith right in Buffy’s sights. The final showdown between Buffy and Faith is amazing, the choreography is great and Buffy takes Faith down with her own knife. Even then, Faith doesn’t make it easy for Buffy; she jumps off the top of the building, landing on a moving truck, taking Angel’s cure out of Buffy’s reach.
Buffy resorts to her only other option; using her own blood to cure Angel. He’s not so behind that idea. It leads to a stand-offs where both emphasise how much they care about the other by being willing to sacrifice themselves for the life of the other. Buffy wins this debate by manipulating Angel, punching the already weak vampire repeatedly in the face until he was angry enough to lose control and take her blood.
Through different causes, both Faith and Buffy wind up in the hospital with the Mayor and Angel watching over them respectively. It leads to a fascinating showdown where the Mayor discovers Buffy and tries to kill her by suffocating her in his sleep and Angel ultimately tosses the Mayor across the room. Faith and the Mayor’s relationship is really interesting. At first I thought he was completely manipulating her, using her lack of a permanent role model figure in her life to get her to do his bidding. She certainly latched onto him very quickly. I still believe there is some manipulation involved but the way he acts in this episode also shows that part of him did really care for her; it is kind of like whilst he took on the parental figure she never really had, she did the reverse for him. It’s always great to have layers to the ‘villains’ other than just ‘they’re bad.’
With Buffy out of the hospital, the gang return to the school and start planning for war. The show is vague about their actual plan (which allows for a great reveal later) but there’s an amazing scene where they discuss plans which are crazier than their current plan. Oz makes a comment about attacking the Mayor with hummus and that does paint a hilarious image. Cordelia puts forward a suggestion to “attack him with germs” and everyone acts like that’s a crazy as if germ warfare doesn’t exist (granted, they would need more time than they did have to pull that one off).
Then comes Graduation and the Mayor’s long-awaited ascension. He turns into a big snake-like demon. The parents all panic and run whilst all the students epically take off their gowns and reveal that they have all been armed with various weapons. Larry gets a flamethrower!!! And they even have archers! They also call back to the Halloween episode with Xander using his knowledge from when he got turned into soldier to direct the attack (we need more of him using this knowledge. The writers seem to only remember this detail when it suits them.) Anyway, all the students fighting back is very cool and it certainly gives them a story to tell about their graduation.
Buffy ultimately uses Faith’s knife to draw the demon!Mayor away from everyone and then it turns into a game of chase through the school until she runs through the library and they’ve only gone and rigged the place to explode! They take out the demon!Mayor and the entire school along with him!
The gang end the episode talking about how the school chapter of their lives is done and that sure is one way to end it. Buffy and Willow are off to college, Xander’s got a road trip planned and Angel is leaving to wherever. The chapter which follows should be interesting.
And for the final sentence; this was one hell of a finale.
