well that’s fine, but the problem is that most (7 out of 11) schools are not fan-made. while researching i could only find descriptions of 7 schools (and saw mentions of koldovstoretz, the russian school, but that was from secondary sources).

your argument is flawed from the get go, because over 70 percent of this map came straight from the brain of good ol’ jkr. moreover, this ask was mostly likely sent as bait (i only ever get asks from friends or bots), but fuck it, i’ll engage.

putting aside the bigotry, jkr is notorious for adding representation after releasing the hp series, most of which feels performative and superficial. however, it is unproductive to discuss harry potter and jkr while ‘putting aside bigotry’, because her bigotry and biases have a direct influence on her writing and the lore she released after the fact.

this is where i think the jokes made on the post you’re referring to can be used as serious criticism. the most poignant criticism is that these schools and their locations (and the countries they serve) are very obviously from a colonialist point of view. as the replies on the tweet said, it is almost willfully ignorant of population, geography, and most importantly, socio-political history. (i’m just gonna use examples from the schools we know about from jkr, because i am conscious that this is a fan work.)

Having the Balkans all fall under one school? has she ever opened a history book? having the school that serves Latin America (largely Spanish speaking) in Brazil, in which the national language is Portuguese? why would one school serve the entire continent of Africa? it ignores the complex history of the continent, and how the arbitrary borders drawn by european colonizers further destablized the continent, in order to utilize its resources. (im not going into detail for the sake of brevity. google is free, and wikipedia is a good source for general info.)

at best it’s lazy world building, at worst it’s actively colonialist and imperialist.

it’s dismissive to refer to people pointing out the bigotry and colonialist views that jkr shared so blatantly as ‘kneejerkers’. it takes a quick google search to see that her beliefs cause real harm to real people.

also in light of the announcement for a potential new Harry Potter series (that literally NO ONE asked for); if you’re an avid Harry Potter fan disrespectfully get the fuck off my page.

normally I try to be nice on here but seeing people actually EXCITED or even PARTIAL to a show like this (that JK ROWLING IS GONNA HAVE HEAVY INFLUENCE OVER BTW) is really pissing me off. I’m queer but in this instance more importantly I’m Jewish and I’m tired. The books are extremely problematic and so deeply infused with anti-semitism and racism (not to mention the creator is doubling down on that hate literally every day) that if you, in good conscience, can still enjoy any aspect of it after TONS of Jewish creators speaking about it, you’re either incredibly dense or you just genuinely don’t care about Jewish (and trans!!) people, and either way I don’t want anything to do with you.

this INCLUDES the marauders fandom btw. “Oh but it’s almost entirely fandom based” I DONT care. You’re still enjoying something built of off bigotry that the creator is very much still actively participating in. And don’t think I haven’t seen you guys complaining about the new show because it’s “not the marauders show” like you are still PART of the problem.

not to mention that as long as Harry Potter is still relevant JKR will still keep making money. money that’s she’s using to actively harm Jewish and queer people, so by keeping her relevant you too are actively harming those communities.

What's your opinion on the fandom's obsession with Smeyers mormonism? I'd just recently discovered your metas(and they're so interesting btw they brilliantly expand upon the almost kinda psychological horror esque feel of the characters and story). But then I go into your replies and tags expecting everyone to marvel at your genius exploration of what's eluded to in the canon text or just the likelihood or natural outcomes of certain scenarios and decisions that have/may have not happened in the context of the overall story. Instead it's most of the time just a bunch of people going, "Aha. Confirmed it! That's so because Meyers a Mormon" or "See, that insert literally anything happened because of the Mormom themes, characterizations and ...idolization??? of insert literally any character/aspect of the lore. "

It would be a lie to say it isn't irritating even speaking as an atheist because it literally stifles any actual exploration of nuance within the books. Any theory, character analysis, or legitimate in/out of universe explanation in regard to canon can be boiled down to such an archaic supposition. And it's not just your blog. I see it everywhere here on tumblr when discussing anything twilight. Even people indifferent to twilight and twilight antis alike are of such strong conviction that they erase any character's belief or motivation or really anything Meyer has said in regards to that matter

Seeing as I'm running a doylism purist blog I obviously agree with you. The author's religious belief are a non-issue to me when I read Meyer's works, or anyone else's for that matter.

I say that, but there are exceptions - there's something strikingly Calvinist permeating the world of Harry Potter in that people are born good or bad and the juxtaposition between Tom Riddle and Harry Potter seems to boil down to Tom being a bad person who will make bad choices while Harry is a good person who will make good choices, and this extends to the rest of the cast and the Hogwarts houses as well. However, these are children's books with Good Guys and Bad Guys and I won't pretend to understand what's happening in JKR's brain, and so you won't see me saying that Harry Potter is Calvinist: merely that there are parallels that can be drawn.

Similarly, taking a step outside the YA genre I find that Victor Hugo's own political and religious personal journeys are reflected in Jean Valjean and Marius Pontmercy, but while it adds to the reading experience it doesn't make me see the characters any differently. They stand on their own.

I bring up these examples for a reason - sometimes, no matter how Doylist you want to be, you read a book and you can tell that, "oh this is an allegory for apartheid", or "I can tell the author is writing about personal experiences with trauma" or the plain old "you know, this feels like the author was projecting a lot" (frequently found on Ao3).

Twilight, for me, is not one such work. My thoughts on Mormonism and Twilight are summed up here, but one point I feel I should make is that although Twilight never read as Mormon to me, I also straight up know very little about Mormonism, so who knows, maybe I would be picking things up if I was more into it. As it is, however, the analyses of Mormonism in Meyer I've seen have been consistently reductive and superficial, where things like "Carlisle is a young blond leader -> Joseph Smith, the Cullens are a perfect family -> they're mormons, nobody in this YA series drinks alcohol -> they're mormons" are presented as compelling evidence, so I've yet to be convinced of it.

To actually answer your question though, I would just block "Mormonism", "LDS", and "Joseph Smith" on tumblr saviour and smile blissfully at my Mormon free dash. In fact I would do that anyway, regardless of what the Twilight fandom is posting.

Some days ago, I posted an anti-JKR post and I got one comment with a link to a "trans woman attacks cis women in a women shelter" article on yahoo (It looked like a legit article) . The message was pretty clear, so I blocked the account, but I wonder if I should have confronted them or something?

The anti-JKR post was just a meme I made on paint and I'm not really good with arguments (even on the internet), even if I know it's wrong. I'm not trans btw, so i wondered what I could do/have done instead.

I’ve seen transphobes use that argument before, and it’s honestly ridiculous. While it is true that there are some awful trans people….. there are awful cis people too, there are awful people amongst every community. That’s just how humans work. Whoever that trans person was or whether that article was real or not, they aren’t awful because they’re trans. T*RFs act as though those trans people became horrible soulless humans from the moment they transitioned, which is obviously untrue. So it’s extremely unreasonable for them to generalise the whole community and be prejudiced against them just because of one shitty person. If a black person attacked someone for the sake of doing so, would that give you the right to be racist against all black people? Of course not, that black person was just a shitty person, their race had nothing to do with it, nor do they speak for all black people. I’m a cis woman, and I’m more than aware that there are awful cis people too, but it wouldn’t be fair for people to say that all cis people are terrible.

It’s okay to avoid confrontation, anon, I tend to ignore it unless it’s right in my face. And it’s perfectly fine for you to not want to have to deal with people like them. You aren’t obligated to confront them.

You can talk to me about this anytime, it’s not inappropriate whatsoever. I’m always happy to give advice about any matters. And for god knows what reason, a whole lot of transphobes and Snaters have given my blog more attention than any other, so I’m not surprised you thought of me lol.

on your post about this weird uptick in forcefem memes (usually from radfems, exclus or exclus leaning people) i think what makes me uncomfy with it is how non consensually these people go about it?
