I needed to hear your voice because you’re the only other person in the world who can calm me down and make me feel safe when the love of my life isn’t around.

He could almost feel Maddie’s smug smile through the phone, though she decided to give him a break, changing topics.

“Do you remember when you were about seven, I was sixteen, and I snuck you out to the movies to go see She’s All That?”

Buck rolled over for what felt like the hundredth time, sighing heavily as he did so. The loft was too quiet, while his mind was anything but. He’d always had insomnia, though some nights seemed to be worse, and this was definitely one of those nights.

He’d been lying in bed tossing and turning for over an hour now, sleep nowhere in sight. He felt utterly restless, though he couldn’t get himself to move from the bed. The clock told him that Eddie still had at least another hour on shift, depending how things went; their shifts were never set in stone. Buck desperately wanted to hear his voice, needed his boyfriend by his side. Something about Eddie always grounded him.

They’d been together for a few months now, both of them taking some time to be single and work on themselves first. It was a process of course, both of them still attending therapy regularly. Things had become less tense as of late, the two of them getting through the days with a little more ease.

Most nights were spent at the Diaz house, though they would stay at Buck’s loft every now and again whenever Chris was at a sleepover, tonight being one of those nights. He knew Eddie wouldn’t be home until late, or really early depending on how you looked at it, but the waiting never got any easier; he hated when they worked opposite shifts. In hindsight, he should’ve just told Eddie he’d meet at his house, but Buck didn’t want to overstay his welcome there. Sure, they were together now, having talked about the shooting a few times over, but Buck was still, well—Buck. His insecurities hadn’t suddenly gone away. Buck didn’t want to seem ‘too needy’, especially considering their relationship was still so new.

Buck knew that Eddie didn’t actually think that about him, but he’d heard those words too many times now for them not be engrained in his mind. Eddie had never said he minded Buck being in his space, but Buck didn’t want to push his luck.

He didn’t miss Taylor, had never wanted her to move in in the first place, though he couldn’t help but to miss the company. Not that she was home all that often, and when she was, she usually had her nose in some story. Even so, Buck reveled in the thought that he got to come home to someone every day, their things littered all about. Well, if he were being honest with himself, Eddie’s things were scattered all over his place, Chris’ too, Buck knowing he’d left his fair share of things at the Diaz’ over the years. Still, it wasn’t the same as having someone there permanently.

Opening his phone, Buck scrolled through various YouTube videos, moving onto TikTok, one of the videos inevitably leading him to his favorite web page, Wikipedia.

After scrolling through a few things, Buck couldn’t help but to pull up his message chain with Eddie, sending one of them off.

Buck: did you know that when cows are isolated from their companions, they get separation anxiety? 🐮

Buck didn’t mention that this was how he felt, though Eddie would probably read right through it anyway; he should’ve sent off the cute fact about seahorses.

When he didn’t hear from Eddie after a while, Buck found himself sulking once more, still unable to reach sleep. He had to remind himself that Eddie was busy with work and not stuck forty feet below earth, or laying in a pool of his own blood on the open street. Buck shivered for the thought. Therapy was helping yes, though it didn’t mean he never worried. Eddie was one of the most important people in his life; he hadn’t been ready to lose him either of those times, and he certainly wasn’t now.

He could call Chris, knew the kid would answer, though he didn’t want to upset him and make the kid wonder if something had happened—again. Bringing up his photos, Buck scrolled through them, smiling at all the memories. Most of them were of Chris and Eddie, Jee right up there with them. The three of them truly owned Buck’s whole heart, Maddie too.

Sitting up again, Buck opened up his second most used message chain, sending a text off to his sister, asking if she was at work; her reply came in the form of a phone call.

“Hi mads.”

“Hey, is everything ok? You’re up late.”

Oh sure, I just hate being alone, and I’m worried that something happened to Eddie, so I’m just sitting here spiraling, just your typical night.

“Yea, just-just can’t sleep. And I—wanted to hear your voice.”

He could almost feel Maddie’s smug smile through the phone, though she decided to give him a break, changing topics.

Buck chuckled just for the memory. “Yea Mads I remember. I’m pretty sure that movie was my sexual awakening because I couldn’t decide if Laney or Zack was prettier.” He’d thought they were both beautiful in their own way, and couldn’t understand why he had to pick one gender versus the other.

“Yes, I remember you begging for one of my Freddie Prinze Jr. posters after that, which of course I gave you because I’m the best big sister.”

Even though Maddie couldn’t see him, Buck rolled his eyes; he couldn’t disagree.

“Man, mom and dad were so pissed when I hung that on my wall.” Buck laughed it off as he always did, though he could tell how much it upset Maddie, even through the phone.

“Evan, you should’ve been able to put whoever you wanted on your walls. That’s what I told you, and mom and dad even back then. You’re allowed to be you and love whoever you want.”

“They would’ve hated anything I put on the walls. They were always trying to find a way to criticize me.”

“Evan.” Maddie drawled out his name, Buck finally sighing as he gave in.

“I know I’m allowed to love whoever I want, ok? I just, I wish they cared enough to understand that.”

Buck had never officially told his parents that he was bisexual, though he guessed they probably figured it out over the years when he came home from dates with both girls and boys dropping him off, most of them ending in some sort of kiss. He never bothered telling them because he figured they didn’t care, or would just tell him something hateful like, ‘it’s just a phase son.’

“Well, I just want you to know that I’m proud of you for always being you. You’re going to give me a hard attack one day with all your injuries, but I still love you.”

“I love you too Mads. Thanks for—just for loving me.”

He could almost feel Maddie’s smile radiating through the phone, tears no doubt lining her eyes, just as they were for Buck.

“So, tell me, are you waiting at yours or Eddie’s for him to come home?”

Was he that obvious? Probably.

“Mine, but I wished I’d gone to his.”

Maddie clicked away on her keyboard, Buck finding something about the sound soothing.

“And why is that?”

He let another sigh fall out as he rolled to his side, bringing the sleeve of his—well Eddie’s— hoodie up so he could inhale his favorite scent.

“I just—it doesn’t really feel like a home here, you know?”

“Because Taylor was there, or?”

If he was being honest with himself, he’d felt that way long before he’d asked her to move in.

“No? I mean that didn’t help I guess, but I’ve just never felt—comfortable here, like I belong.”

“And how do you feel at Eddie’s house?”

Words he’d said long ago echoed through his mind, Maddie probably remembering them too since she’d been the one he’d uttered them to.

‘This is Eddie’s house; I’m not really a guest.’

“Like I belong, like I just—fit. Is that…weird?”

“Not at all. It’s the same way I felt when I first moved into Chims. That big house I moved into when I first arrived always felt empty; there was no love inside of it.”

And yea, Buck thought he understood that perfectly; the Diaz house was full of nothing but love.

They talked for a while longer, Buck finally dozing off after a time, waking a tad groggily when he felt fingers brushing through his curls. He instantly recognized the touch, leaning into it as he reached up to grab Eddie at the wrist.

“Where have you been?”

He said it a tad more harshly than he’d meant, his current sleep state of mind taking over for him. Eddie only chuckled, bending down to place a kiss over his birthmark.

“I was at work baby, remember? Had a big accident at the end that kept me longer.”

Buck turned to his back so he could look up at Eddie who was hovered over him on his side of the bed.

“Well, I missed you,” Buck couldn’t help but to say, pouting out his lower lip.

Eddie raised his thumb to swipe over his pout, placing a kiss to it after.

“I missed you too. Were you feeling a little like the cows?”

Buck furrowed his brows for a moment before he remembered, groaning as he went to bury his face in his pillow, mumbling into it.

“I should’ve told you the stupid seahorse fact.”

Eddie laid down next to him, pulling Buck to him as he tucked in behind him, wrapping him up tight. “Well, how about you tell me now,” Eddie said as he linked their fingers together at Buck’s front.

“Just that, seahorse’s mate for life.”

Buck twisted in Eddie’s hold so he could face him, looking right into those deep browns of his.

“Yea,” Eddie asked, “how does that work?”

“Well, they meet early in the morning, there’s a whole ceremony, and they change colors and everything. It can last for up to an hour!”

Eddie used the back of his hand to brush over Buck’s face, causing his eyelids to flutter.

“You wanna talk about whatever’s bothering you?”

“Who said anything was bothering me?”

Eddie gave him a stern look, one that came with raised brows.

“Because I know you, and you only stay up late doing research binges when you can’t sleep.”

And well, that was fair.

“I just—I don’t like it here. I—it doesn’t feel like a home. I don’t think it ever did.”

Eddie studied him for a moment too long, Buck wondering if he’d revealed himself too much.

“Well, that’s good.”

“It uh, it is?”

Buck was so confused, though Eddie was smiling down to him, delighted as ever.

“It’s perfect, actually. You know the guy who helped me patch up my walls, you know the one who likes to fix things?”

The dopiest smile spread across Buck’s face as he answered Eddie.

“Yea I uh, I think I know him.”

“Good. Because I’ve been meaning to tell him that he should move in. Well, it’s my kid who’s been bugging about it really.”

They were both smiling so much that when Buck pulled Eddie to him, their teeth clanked together before their lips met, neither of them caring in the slightest.

“So, it’s just your kid who’s interested in him, huh?” Eddie shrugged around his hold, bringing his forehead down to rest against Bucks’. “Well as it turns out, I kind of love him too, have for a while now.”

“Y-you love me?”

Eddie reached to pull Buck onto his lap, looking to him wholly.

“Yes Evan, you’re it for me. I love you, even when you send me cheesy facts at one a.m. when you should be sleeping.”

Buck laughed into Eddie as he moved to lay on top of him, Eddie taking his weight on with ease.

“I save the best ones for you Eds, you know, because I love you and all.”

Eddie switched their positions then as he tackled Buck to the bed, hovering over him before pressing the tenderest of kisses to his lips, the desire slowly building between them.

It was a few weeks later when Buck was officially moved into the Diaz house, boxes of his things spread all about. As Buck dug through one box, he was suddenly backed into another, Eddie snaking his arms around him, those long of his fingers scratching at the back of Buck’s next.

“There’s one more thing, before we make if official, I mean.”

Buck couldn’t guess what he was hinting at; he’d had a key to Eddie’s house for years.

“Ok, and uh, what would that be?”

Eddie gave him a bit of a cheeky grin before bringing him in for a sweet kiss, lingering his lips there afterwards.

“Do you wanna be my seahorse?”

Buck couldn’t help but to get teary eyed, immediately nodding into Eddie.

“You guys are so weird.”

They both turned to see Chris watching them from the doorway of his room, scrunching up his nose in mock-disgust.

Eddie hugged him tighter, Buck answering for them both.

“Better get used to it bud. I’m here to stay.”

Chris only smiled, throwing out a few words before heading back into his room.

“Good. I don’t like when you leave.”

Yep, that was gonna do it.

His eyes watered once more, Buck sniffling as he went, Eddie not fairing much better.

“Better get it together before our kid see’s and chastises us again.”

The Diaz boys really knew how to make a guy emotional.

As he laid in bed that night, waiting for Eddie to get off shift, he didn’t feel so alone. Chris was just down the hall, the familiar hums and creaks of the house comforting Buck. The lingering scent of Eddie was all around him, wrapping him in a hug as if Eddie himself was there. Even tonight, when he wasn’t quite ready to sleep, he felt relaxed, knowing he was home.

Home wasn’t a place, but rather a feeling, Buck never feeling it more than when he was with Eddie, right where he belonged.

When he’d been swept up in the tsunami, the only way Buck could describe what it was like was by comparing it to being thrown into a washing machine. Water had filled his lungs and Buck had no way of knowing which way was up or down as his body was beaten into debris that was caught up with him. This was similar. Buck’s stomach revolted every time his body was weightless only to crash down hard onto the floor again and there was no position to give him a minute of relief from being flung around. A small, petty part of himself was at least a little vindicated that he wasn’t the only one.

you know when you got your ask, i was like i should continue finishing my fic masterpost before even i forget that i also write fic. so i'm going to focus on five fics i've written for this one, and most of them are my older, most beloved fics. (these are all ao3 links)

as our love shapes our universe - The Old Guard/Princess Diaries AU that I wrote when I started writing for fandom again. Features Nicky as Princess Mia's cousin, who introduces his friend Prince Yusuf al Kaysani to be Mia's future king. It has 3 stories (i know, but it's truly a series), the first being a straight up fusion of TOG and Princess Diaries II and then sequels. If you like hurt/comfort, and overall feels, this is for you.

to know those among us - Another TOG fic where Nicky gets mistaken for an angel by a child, so he tells them about real ones he knows. features a very cute kid , his mother, and importance of representation. This is very personal to me, and I hold every comment i got from this very close to my heart. I also love writing characters interacting with strangers.

in parts, i fall, in love - Joe/Nicky Modern AU meet-cute where Joe is an artist, and Nicky is just along for the ride. I remember writing this fic with a smile on my face

not that i need reminding - Joe/Nicky post-canon where Joe gets a vibe check from the universe, and talks to the stranger about love and the sureness it brings.

this heart of mine - This is pretty much my Yusuf al Kaysani thesis, written for Yusuf bingo for the prompt "Joe and whatever makes him upset / lose faith in humanity." Writing this fic reminded me that i love Yusuf very much, and where my strength lies in my writing.

i think brandon perea really did something with how he portrayed angel because he was supposed to be this all-round likeable sunshine character right and we probably would've easily fallen for him right away whereas the first few times you see him he's sooo annoying he comes off as this weird mix of can't-be-arsed know-it-all cringey whiny little man but then you're just as easily drawn in by the fact that he automatically latches onto the siblings in a way that isn't just “oh these two are onto something let me in on the fame” but more like “you two are very interesting individuals and i want to be part of your little team. please let me in. also please don't die. i need you to be safe at all times” and you end up caring and rooting for him without even noticing the switch. it's so seamless. he IS a cringey whiny little man and a crypto bro and a little bit of a know-it-all but he's also so endearing he overshares with complete strangers acts like he's part of the family after setting up a few cameras and rambling about aliens he talks SO much and talks even more when he panics he makes sure the haywoods stay safe he lets them crash at his place borrow his clothes he helps them with jean jacket because he thinks it could help people he's smart and a complete idiot and clingy and i want to kiss him i'm so glad he survived and i find it amazing that by the end of the movie everyone is glad he survived brandon did such a good job with his characterisation!!!!!!! oh my god!!!! angel torres my beloved

OHMYGOD this is so hard!!!!! I love them both so so much. I love seeing the buckley siblings development and I was just saying to @like-the-rest-of-la how satisfying it was to see Buck’s backstory too and how Oliver’s acting choices in earlier seasons gave the end result so much depth!? And I adore Eddie begins. It’s an amazing episode. Eddie cut his line!!! Eddie fighting to get back to his family!! Eddies LAYERS. And and Buck cLAWING at the ground, the team treating him like the family of the victim in that soft way they’re talking about Eddie underground omfg.

Oh man. Okay okay. I’ll pick Buck Begins because of every moment with Oliver’s curls making him look like a baby aaaand that moment when Buck’s screaming and the team come save him in the factory fire, that moment is just. Perfection.

Considering both of your work lives, children was the thing least thought and talked about. The few times you talked about children, adoption and surrogacy was brought up. You had gone in to the doctors a few weeks ago to see if the surrogacy had successfully gone through and it did! You were a big mix of excited and scared to tell Yelena.

Never once, had you loved anyone the way you loved Yelena. Your relationship with her was definitely a seriously rocky one to start, especially on her part. You drove home after getting her favorite ice cream and water, the result papers in the passenger seat beside you. To your lucky surprise, she was home when you got there so some nerves, were calmed down some.

"Yelena. I have news for you"

It was silent for a moment until you heard her bound down the stairs and approach you with a small smile that made your heart warm. You sat together on the couch, handing her the ice cream before you went dead silent, your eyes locked on the coffee table. You didn't want this feeling to eat you any longer. Yelena noticed the look on your face, setting her hands free as she sat on the ground in-front of you, her hands on your knees.

"I went in to the doctors a bit ago and the surrogacy results came positive. Yelena... I-I'm pregnant. We're pregnant"

To My Dearest, Rosemary

My most beloved Rosemary, I will probably be gone by the time you are to read this letter. Worry not, I've just gone on a business trip but I'm not known to the full knowledge of it. I will write and call to you and the children when my time is free.

How do you do though my love? I still forever remember our first time meeting and I was so nervous for your beauty was unlike anything I'd ever seen. Maybe it was then I knew I wanted to marry you. But in terms of my trip, I should be back after a week to two weeks so worry not that I'll be gone long. I'll try returning earlier should there be circumstances of such.

I hope the children don't tire you out too much and that Sophie is of help. Before I am to finish this letter, know that you will always be my only. As any summer day in Texas, it was blazing hot as we had every window & door open hoping it would help in which barely did. The childish giggles of my younger siblings sounded through-out the entire grounds of our giant farm as I pulled down clothes off the line, clopping hooves stopped me. "He's here! Big sister (Y/N)! The major is here!" I smiled at Marie's excited calls as I picked up the laundry basket and made my way to the metal gate, meeting the soft smiling major.

"Well, what's the major doing here of all places & days?" My accent drawled out as I shielded my face from the sun, the man smiling at me as I opened the gate, his horse walking through. "Can't a man visit his favorite special lady?" I smiled, leading him towards the horse stables, the small children running all around us and clinging to Jasper and his horse. "I think these little ladies have taken a liking to me"

I shook my head as I helped un-saddled his horse before he followed me inside. "Special visitor everyone~!" I called out in a sing song voice, the heat from cooking sticking to my skin again, my petticoat unbearable once more. I slipped upstairs, staring to section off, fold and put away laundry. Gentle hands pulled me back, soft kissing on my fabric covered shoulder "Always find a way to distract me don't you, Major?" He smiled, resting his chin on my shoulder as I layed my head back on his, the moment was peaceful, quiet & calm as we both gently swayed side-to-side.

"It's time to come eat, ma'am" I smiled, turning and placing a soft little kiss on his cheek "Help me finish the laundry then real quick" He sighed and did as such then the two of us, hand-in-hand bounced down the steps and into the kitchen as I glided over to a counter, grabbing up the bowl of my specially made mashed potato's and setting down onto the table, just all around smiles and happiness.

Birthday [Evan Buckley]

story info: reader is bobby's daughter (from before the fire in Minnesota) authors note: this is my first fanfic on here so it might be shit ngl warnings: cursing word count: 1021

The sun that streamed through my curtains casted a hazy yellow glow on my skin, spreading warmth through my body as my morning bed-head hair tickled the skin of my shoulders & face gently as I sat up slowly, enjoying the last few moments in the comfort of my bed before finally getting up & skulking into the shower.

The drive to work was nothing unusual for L.A, just the morning traffic, ignorant people barely look at the road from their phones. On the way to the 118, I had already seen on accident with the 133 already taking care of it.

When I walked into the station, it was as normal as it could get at the 118 but what put me off slightly is the lack of immediate birthday wishes. Most people wouldn't care but when a birthday came up in the 118, it was taken rather seriously with wishes, spontaneous gifts, & a party at the end of the day usually.

I jogged lightly up the stairs to find the lounge area as usual, Buck & Eddie fighting over a game, Bobby making breakfast while Hen & Chim sneak behind him continuously as I took a seat at a smaller, two person table. "What's today's date?" I asked, hoping they hadn't forgotten my birthday but I was let down, by each of them, my dad included "I think it's the 17th" Buck casually said through his gaming rage.

"No, it's the 19th, look at a calendar today Buck?" Chim replied with his usual sass towards Buck as I lightly sighed tapping away at my computer, rubbing my hands lightly on my face until the loud buzzing alarm disturbed me and I shot up, going down the pole & readying up for whatever this job would be.

2019 In TV - My Top 10 Shows

This past year may have sucked balls in a lot of ways, but we certainly never got short-changed when it came to our TV. There was an absolute WEALTH of truly cracking TV around, both on regular networks and on the various on-demand platforms, and so here is my pick of the best, my absolute favourites of 2019.

10. WATCHMEN

Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof brings us a blinding sequel to comic book legend Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel with a delightfully trippy, ruthlessly efficient rug-puller that seems pretty tailor-made for HBO. Old faces return in interesting ways, while there are some cracking new “masks” on offer, particularly Regina King’s Sister Night and the always-brilliant Tim Blake Nelson as morally complex antihero Looking Glass (in some ways very much the show’s own answer to Rorschach). It never goes where you expect it to go, and refuses to give easy answers to the questions it raises, effortlessly paving the way for more next year ...

9. THE BOYS

Amazon offers up its own edgy, thoroughly adult superhero property with this darkly funny antiheroic gem based on the cult Garth Ennis comic, expertly adapted by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke. Karl Urban dominates as Billy Butcher, the foul-mouthed, morally bankrupt “leader” of a makeshift crew of mercenaries, hitmen and psycho killers devoted to “taking care of” superheroes when they inevitably go bad. Season 1 ultimately serves as an origin story, showing how the team come together, laying quality groundwork for the incoming sophomore tour that promises to open the already fascinating world out significantly.

8. PREACHER (SEASON 4)

More Garth Ennis, namely this blinder of a closing season for AMC’s consistently impressive adaptation of his best known series for Vertigo comics. Surprisingly epic, deliciously subversive and constantly, darkly hilarious, this thoroughly non-PC series from showrunners Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (yes! I Know!) certainly went out on a high note, providing its loyal followers with perfectly-pitched bow-outs and sometimes heartbreaking goodbyes for all its players, especially its dynamite leads, Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga and, in particular, Joe Gilgun as unapologetic bad boy vampire Cassidy. A worthy end to one of my all-time favourite TV shows.

7. THE WITCHER

While it’s clearly taken its look from the wildly successful video games, Netflix’s second most ambitious long-form offering of the year takes its lead from the fantasy book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski that started it all. With its somewhat episodic set-up and decidedly twisted narrative timelines, it take a few chapters to get the hang of it, but there’s plenty to draw you in, from the exotic world-building to the frenetic action and compelling collection of richly crafted characters. Henry Cavill is the titular hero, lovably grouchy mutant monster-hunter Geralt of Rivia, but the real scene-stealer is co-star Anya Chalotra as roguishly self-serving mage Yennefer of Vengenberg.

6. CARNIVAL ROW

One of the year’s two big sleeper hit TV surprises for me was this inventively offbeat allegorical Amazon fantasy series from The 4400 creator René Echevarria and screenwriter Travis Beacham. Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne are the star-crossed lovers at the heart of this intriguingly dark and dirty murder mystery thriller set in Victorian London-esque city-state the Burgue, in which humans struggle to co-exist alongside a struggling disenfranchised underclass of fae (fairies, fawns, centaurs and the like). The racial turmoil undertones are writ large throughout, but this is far more well-written and lavishly appointed than you might expect on first glance, and almost ridiculously addictive viewing.

5. LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS

My other big TV surprise was this wonderfully bizarre sci-fi anthology series of animated shorts from Netflix, mostly adapted from an eclectic selection of short stories from a wide range of top-notch literary talent including Peter F. Hamilton, John Scalzi, Marko Kloos and Alastair Reynolds (a particular favourite of mine). As you’d expect from the brainchild of Deadpool director Tim Miller and producer David Fincher, this is edgy, leftfield stuff, frequently ultra-violent and decidedly adult, and the wildly varied nature of the material on offer makes for a decidedly uneven tone, but there are some absolute gems on offer here, my favourite being Suits, an enjoyably simple tale of salt-of-the-earth farmers on an alien world utilising clunky mech suits to protect their settlement from rampaging giant xeno-bugs.

4. THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE

The show with the biggest cinematic wow factor in 2019 had to be this long-awaited prequel series to Jim Henson’s classic fantasy movie masterpiece, created for Netflix by, of all people, Louis Leterrier (yes, the director of The Transporter, Now You See Me and Clash of the Titans, if you can believe it). The technology may have evolved in leaps and bounds, but there’s a wonderfully old school vibe in the delightfully physical puppet effects used to bring the fantastical world of Thra and its denizens to life, so that it truly does feel like it’s based in the same world as the film. This was EASILY the most visually arresting show of 2019, packed with exquisite character, creature and set design that perfectly complements the awesome work done by Henson and Brian Froud on the original, while the writers have created a darkly rich narrative tapestry that makes Thra seem a more dangerous place than ever.

3. THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

I was a HUGE fan of My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s magnificently oddball alternative superhero comic, so when I learned that Netflix were adapting it I was a little wary because I knew how spectacularly hard it would be for ANY showrunners to get right. Thankfully Steve Blackman (Fargo season 2) and Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist TV series) were the right choice, because this perfectly captured the outsider nature of the characters and their endearingly dysfunctional family dynamic. Ellen Page, Tom Hopper (Black Sails, Merlin), David Castañeda and Emmy Raver-Lampman are all excellent as the more “functional” Hargreeves siblings, but the show is roundly stolen by Misfits star Robert Sheehan and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn’s Aidan Gallagher as nihilistic clairvoyant Klaus and the old-man-in-a-child’s-body sociopath known only as Number Five. Consistently surprising and brilliantly bonkers, this was definitely the year’s most wonderfully WEIRD show.

2. STRANGER THINGS (SEASON 3)

Writer-director duo the Duffer Brothers’ ultra-nostalgic 80s-set coming-of-age sci-fi horror series remains the undisputed jewel in Netflix’s long-form crown with this consistently top-drawer third season expertly maintaining the blockbuster-level standards we’ve come to expect. This year the cross-dimensional shenanigans have largely been jettisoned, replaced by a gleefully nasty through-line of icky body horror that would make major influences like David Cronenberg and Stuart Gordon proud, as perennial teenage bad boy Billy Hargrove (the fantastically menacing Dacre Montgomery) becomes the leader of an army of psychic slaves under the control of the Upside Down’s monstrous Mind Flayer. The kids are all brilliant as always, Winona Ryder and David Harbour really get to build on their strong-yet-spiky chemistry, and the show is almost effortlessly stolen by Joe Keery as one-time golden boy Steve Harrington and series-newcomer Maya Hawke as his nerdy new foil Robin Buckley, who were very nearly the cutest couple on TV in 2019. Another gold standard season for a true gold standard show.

1. GOOD OMENS

Sadly, legendary author Terry Pratchett died before he could see the adaptation of one of his most beloved novels (and one of my all-time literary favourites too) see the light of day, but at least his co-author Neil Gaiman was around to bring it to fruition with the aid of seasoned TV director David Mckinnon (Jekyll, Doctor Who, Sherlock), and the end result sure did him proud, perfectly capturing the deeply satirical voice and winningly anarchic, gleefully offbeat and gently subversive humour of the original novel. David Tennant and Michael Sheen could both have been born to play Crowley and Aziraphale, the angel and demon nominally charged with watching over the young Antichrist in preparation for his role in the End Times, even though they would both much rather the world just went on quite happily the way it is, thanks very much. This is about as perfect an adaptation as you can get, the six hour-long episodes giving the surprisingly complex story time to breathe and grow organically, and the result is the most fun I spent in front of my TV this year.
