As Bucky’s office doors opened he remained at his desk, turned towards the window. He’d been expecting Steve’s return from making collections.

The booming music from his club took over the room, not that you’d know it from looking at Bucky—known to most as The Winter Soldier, a notorious Russian sniper turned Mafia Kingpin—who didn’t so much as blink an eye.

He did, however, continue twirling his trusted knife in one hand. The other, holding a glass of whiskey.

When the doors closed Bucky finally spoke. “I expect all your collections were made.”

I’ve actually written a fic like this here with Tony (which is much longer since it was for an exchange), but now here’s one with Bucky!

(Sorry it’s taken a little bit, there’s been a lot going on in the past few days.)

“Why me?” Bucky crossed his arms, eyebrow raised. “Anyone else could go. I don’t- why should I have to spend the evening with a bunch of teenagers?”

Steve looked up. “You used to love stuff like this. I think it’ll be fun. You’ve always been a charmer.” He tugged on the collar of his friend’s shirt, straightening it out. “Peter needs this. His date cancelled on him last night and posted pictures with someone else this afternoon. He doesn’t get much of a normal teenage experience, he should at least get this.”

“Maybe I don’t want to escort the pest,” Bucky argued. “And I haven’t done anything like this in decades. A lot has changed since then.”

Steve shot him a look. He straightened his jacket and stepped back. “Look, you’re already ready. Why fight back now?”

Bucky sighed dramatically, looking down at himself. The suit looked nice, at least. It wasn’t too stuffy or uncomfortable and it looked good. A nice traditional black suit with a red shirt. Apparently it somehow coordinated with whatever Peter was wearing.

He wore gloves to keep from drawing attention to his very obviously not-human hand. But they didn’t look out of place with the ensemble.

He definitely didn’t have a choice in going. But he sort of wished that he’d fought back sooner.

“Are we going?”

Steve held a hand to his chest. “I feel like a proud mama. Should we take pictures?”

“Quit it, punk. Either we leave now or I’m not going.”

May gave Peter a sympathetic look as she parked in front of the school. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. Really. We can go home and watch crappy movies and get takeout. That would be okay.”

He sighed, brushing a stray curl off of his forehead. “It’s okay. Ned and MJ are here at least. It’ll be okay.”

His friends had their own dates but he could leave that part out. It just made the whole thing sadder.

After his other poor attempts at attending formals at school he’d at least hoped for a normal senior prom. But he should have known that was too much to ask.

“Okay,” May said softly. “Call me if you need anything.” She gave him a small smile. “I’m so proud of you anyways. I hope you enjoy your night.”

“I mean, I can only enjoy but so much-“

A knock at the window made them both look over, eyes wide at the figure peeking in.

May rolled down the window, brows furrowed. “Hello? I’m sorry, I’ll only be parked here a second more. Just let him get out first.”

“No, that’s- what are you doing here?” Peter blinked up at him. “Do I need to leave for a mission or something?”

Bucky could hear the disappointment in his voice and shook his head. “No, uh, did- did no one talk to you?”

The whole thing suddenly felt a lot stupider.

“No?”

“Oh. Stark mentioned that your dance was tonight. And that you didn’t have someone to go with. And Steve decided to recruit me.” He frowned. “And…no one told you.”

Peter’s cheeks blushed a bright red. “You- you don’t have to do that. Really. I’m okay going alone. My friends are here.”

Bucky sighed. “You could have told them that. If I show up back so soon and without pictures Steve will have my head. So, might as well stay.”

Peter slowly rolled the window back up before opening the door. “Oh. Well…thank you. I think.”

May watched them, leaning over and rolling the window back down once Peter got out and closed the door. “Be safe!” She gave him a wink. “Have fun.”

Peter covered his face and waved. “Bye, May.” He turned to Bucky, face still pink. “I guess we go in now?“

He couldn’t deny that now he was more excited for the night. Like, who else could say that their date for prom was the White Wolf? He was pretty sure he was the only one to make the claim.

It definitely wasn’t normal, but maybe he could have a good prom night after all.

Or maybe Peter requesting a rare song at a gala and dancing with his Aunt May. Or maybe even asking Steve/Bucky to dance.
