The GOOD

- She called him James 😭 (well she called him Bucky too, but ok...)

- he called her Nat

- their fight was kind of filtrarious, there was some kind of tension indeed

- she called out his bullshit

- she is staying

- Ian was like "pls get a room"

The BAD

- they didn't really talked??? Like, yes, they exchanged a total amount of maybe 12 words, but they said nothing!?

- bucky was "you have to trust me (his new motto, apparently, since he is telling this 6 months now, and we still don't know what his real play is)... stay here and keep me in check" (so kinky of him, really)

- and nat was "uhm... ok, but you're still full of bs"

- and that's it? 🤣 This was such a good moment to have Bucky open up a bit and let us readers peek a little into his mad plan. Nat said "you have to tell me everything, and I will be able to say if you're keeping stuff from me" and he says NOTHING and she is "yeah, fine"

- to write another couple of pages of a real confrontation would have been that bad? In my opinion, no. But probably we'll have more in sol 13.

- I wish this trend of having people talking during fights will end soon. You need to keep your breath when you're beating the shit out of someone, or trying to escape their knives and weapons, stop all this talking, take time to do it later, or even before ---> but I will talk about it in another post

- it wasn't bad in the end, simply because nothing really happened. I loved how the synopsis was like "BLACK WIDOW ENTERS THE FRAY SHE IS IN COLD WAR DISCOVER HER ROLE WHAT WILL HAPPEN NOW!?!? HOW WILL SHE STOP BUCKY FROM BEING A VILLAIN" and she was in it for 3 pages, with the cover of CW: omega already giving away which side she'll be, and that's it 🤣

- too little sorry. We need more!🤣

On the subject of King Thor, I feel the need to inform the masses that the king in the original comic was King James, who is Scottish and angry and possibly gay for Quicksilver and is also Wolverine, which makes me wish they could have borrowed Hugh Jackman off the Deadpool set

My heart stopped. I had just seen someone who I haven’t seen since our years together in the red room. James Barnes. The Winter Soldier. My trainer. My lover. He was standing just in front of the elevator. Steve must have invited him to Tony’s party. Why else would he be here?

I dreaded looking him in the eye. I wondered if he remembered all of those years ago. Surely, he did. I couldn’t imagine him forgetting those wonderful times. He was the only good thing in those years. I would always cherish those times.

I sipped on my cocktail and avoided eye contact at all costs. I made slight eye contact with Clint. He was the only one I felt I could meet glances with at this time. He noticed something was off, but didn’t make a scene out of it. He knew that I was nervous, even though my emotions were hidden.

Steve led James over to where I was sitting. James must have never mentioned me. Thank God. That saved me some explaining. “Natasha, this is Bucky. Bucky, this is Natasha.”

Your portrayal is magnificent! I love-love-love how you write Bucky, he's been dehumanized so much on screen but you take a humanistic, loving, honest approach and complement his complexity with your own experiences. To where I feel it's Bucky at his true self: a man who still has the same good heart underneath all the things and patterns he has to unlearn from his time as the Winter Soldier. Thank you so much!!! I've been reading and rereading this ever since it came in. <3 Now, I don't know exactly how a veteran with C-PTSD and brainwashing feels. But I do relate to the 'things I'm not at fault for but I feel responsible for' that's baked into Bucky.

While my Steve has been off and on throughout the years, I never really stopped playing Bucky, even when I was off of tumblr. (I'm terrified my Steve is lousy but people keep saying he's good so I'm doing something right???)

Random thoughts that got out of hand under the cut.

Things I try and keep in mind when I write Bucky:

To not woobify Bucky. Fanon!Woobie!Bucky drives me up the wall. Hopefully I succeed! His response to his own pain is to get angry and attempt to do something about it. Usually with violence.

(Bucky's response to 'poor lil meow meow' is a horrified look and a "fuck off.")

Play with the blank slate and dehumanization angles of Winter Soldier but Bucky is also in there. Winter Soldier is not a robot.

Keep Bucky as good-hearted but constantly fighting his Winter Soldier role. Either being hypervigilant or breaking a lot of things in his life because he's trying to fix the thing. He's the Winter Soldier, the Winter Soldier is himself. It's easy to fall back into form because he never left.

His traumas have traumas. His trust issues have trust issues. He hates himself. People say he's a good man, that it wasn't his fault, that he's redeemed himself. But he'll never believe any of that. Any good parts of his life are constantly kicked out from under him. Then he gets used to the bad as the new normal.

He's not a serial killer or unhinged. He's not going to murder hobo his way through life. He's good at killing. People sometimes just need to die. But it's never thoughtless or without purpose. He won't lose sleep over it. Sometimes it terrifies him how good he's at and easy it is to kill.

He fucks up! Regularly! In canon. Which is 100% way more interesting than a woobie. Tries to do everything alone. Atonement as a way forward but also self-harm.

Examples:

Bar Fights Random Dudes who badmouth Cap. Everyone gets knocked out and Bucky's standing going "Cap would be disappointed in me. And that makes me miss him even more."

Ditches the Captain America suit, shield, and Natasha to go fight The Man With No Face as the Winter Soldier. Jim Hammond's/Original Human Torch corpse and Namor were on the line. Not to mention, the whole world. Plus, he had been sent to kill TMWNF's boss back in the 1960s and wound up killing the boss' wife. oops.

The whole Black Widow Hunt in 616 (Editorial Mandated BuckyNat breakup). He's unraveling. Beats up so many people badly. Plays right into Bad Guy's hands and willingly conditions himself to be Soviet Winter Soldier in a desperate attempt to find Natasha. Her memories of him are wiped completely. So he walks away in a mix of respect for Natasha's agency and self-hate (but very much Editorial Mandated Breakup. Someone should have told her that she was missing a person and see what she said about it).

RJ (kid trained by HYDRA to be Bucky/Winter Soldier). At first, things are pretty good. They're bonding, Bucky's showing RJ a way forward. Not having to be a killer. When RJ's dad shows up, Bucky accidentally alienates RJ when trying to protect him (granted, RJ's dad has bad intentions but still).

The whole Zemo thing and how he treats Sam in TFATWS!

I really love how 616 made him a Fixer. (as of Winter Soldier 2018). The guy who helps people out of supercrime. He's actively working on his issues. He's mostly doing the right thing for probably the right reasons. But a chunk of it is trying to save himself and remind himself that he's worth saving.

He loves so hard and much. Bucky will do everything he possibly can for his loved ones, even to sacrifice himself. Like Steve, he's always ready to throw down his life.

Steve and Bucky are two sides of the same coin. Anger issues, avoids therapy and bleeding on people, fierce in love, a good man who tries to do the right thing. Steve just hides his issues under the Cap Persona. Bucky considers Steve to be the better man because Steve is moral, just, and Good.

Thoughts on SteveNat? I don't get the popularity of it and then when I learned that Scarjo viewed the relationship in a brother/Sister way made me confused in why people still thinks mcu SteveNat were in love. Tik Toker even said Steve got Nat pregnant in Iw even though she can't have kids!

my thing with stevenat is that even if i switched to operating under the mindset that steve likes women, it wouldn’t make any sense (to me). this cishet white couple played by actors who have been opposite to each other in romantic roles before has no reason not to have become canon for any other reason than it just ... wasn’t like that with them. think about it! they had every opportunity. again, they’re a cishet white ship, so racism and homophobia are out of the equation, as is the possibility of the actors disliking each other thanks to how close c*vans and sc*rjo are. they also spend HOURS of screentime and general canon time together, so the excuse diehard mcu buckynats use (because they just can’t let it go) of them “not being allowed time to interact) goes out the window. they’re close enough to consider each other family and very intimate friends, so the idea that they weren’t open enough with each other also doesn’t work. nat even kissed steve, which was the perfect opportunity to get them together with how steve didn’t want to pursue things with other women and was on the outs with traitor neighbor nurse sharon. steve had no strings on him and neither did nat, so even the clintasha excuse of having a secret spouse doesn’t work out. the window of time between tws and aou would have been when they got together but clearly they didn’t seeing as they chose to never kiss each other again on their own time and steve was supportive of bruce and nat (good for him because i’m not). ik the pregnancy theory stems from the idea of them getting together between civil war and infinity war but with the way the black widow timeline adds up with steve busting sam and them out of prison, i’d say they had other things to worry about before going on the run with him. aka steve spent probably three weeks with his sleeping boyfriend in wakanda considering his face was completely healed of cuts when he finally found sam. to be fair, busting into an international prison is hard, as is finding your sort of at the time awkwardly estranged friend flying around in a commandeered quinjet. the pregnancy theory just gets me MAD because natasha was very clearly traumatized by her INVOLUNTARY sterilization so why would that be a cute trope .. anyways ship steve and nat if you want but it is simple not for me! i’ve always seen nat as his big sister even before black widow because she’s a year older than he is mentally (27 and 28 respectively when they meet) plus they just have that type of rapport.

Hello! Um... I really hope that this question doesn’t come out as insensitive, but I was just just wondering if you like/hate/dislike Sebastian Stan or just your general thoughts about him. Again, I sincerely apologize if this sounds totally insensitive. You don’t have to answer if it is. I’m just mainly curious is all.

apparently, i gave the impression with my Winter Soldier post that I didn’t like him which i did not intend at all because it's categorically not true. I love Sebastian Stan’s work a lot! not just as Bucky (which i think he’s a perfect choice for, I just wish MCU!Bucky was more like Bucky in the comics). 

so i was a huge fan of his TV work when I was younger and am excited he’s coming back to TV with TFATWS and Pam and Tommy. i first saw him in NBC Kings when I was a teen where his performance as Jack made a huge impression on me because he was playing a young prince who hadn't quite realised he was gay, but has a homophobic dad who resented him for it, which HAHAAHA very much hit home for me at the time without me realising why sdfjfbfjsdbf. 

Sebastian reminds me a lot of Ryan Gosling (who’s works I also love) and Robert Pattinson in that they all do their best to not be typecast due to their handsome looks by using their Big Franchise Money to work on smaller films and/or with indie filmmakers in interesting roles. I love Sebastian especially in films where he’s directed by women like Destroyer (2018), and We Have Always Lived In A Castle (2018). what can i say?? man thrives under the female gaze!

generally, i think that Sebastian is one of the small handful of MCU actors who use the freedom Marvel money gives them to do interesting roles, hone their craft by doing lots of different work with different creatives, and give their filmography great range. but yeah, i love Sebastian Stan’s work. absolutely!!

I mean idk the dude so the only other thing I can safely say i like about him is how when he’s on marvel press tours his goals seem to be a) roast tom holland b) ship buckynat and c) make Anthony mackie laugh - all of which are goals close to my heart. also, uh, this interview where he speaks Romanian to a Romanian fan...............turns my whole body into [HEART EYES EMOJI].

Ok, so I discussed this w/ @cherrynat on Instagram and I’ve finally decided to post it here. I think I know a really great way that Bucky/Buckynat can be referenced in Black Widow, even without a cameo.

Ok, so we know that Taskmaster is playing a major role in this film. One of the main characteristics of Taskmaster in the comics is, when he’s not being hired muscle, he hires himself out as a trainer for other heroes/villains. He even started his own school for training villains/henchmen.

With the inclusion of the new Red Room, I can only assume that one of Taskmaster’s roles in the movie is that he will be brought in to train this new generation of widows.

Bc maybe, in no small part because of Nat, the Red Room/HYDRA’s old trainer is no longer in their grasp.

Like wouldn’t it be so simple for someone to tell Natasha, “since you let our old trainer escape to Wakanda, we had to find someone else.” Like that would go so far as to confirm Bucky’s involvement with the Red Room, even if there’s no flashback or further commentary beyond that!!!

What do you think about Sebastian's obsession with Black Widow? And wanting her to have a romantic relationship with Bucky so badly? Especially with the fact that you (I do too, which is why it's kinda hard and weird for me?) ship Stucky and Evanstan.

Good question. My feelings on this topic are kind of complicated too, so I feel you, anon. I'm not sure if I would call it an obsession, but it is true that he's expressed an interest in BuckyNat and Black Widow in general quite a few times. Since I'm someone who is completely devoted to Stucky and can't and won't ship either Bucky or Steve with anyone else than each other, I do find this kind of a hard pill to swallow. I do sometimes wish Sebastian was more supportive of Stucky as a ship (even though he's perfectly entitled to his own opinions of course) but he's said that while he thinks it's great that people ship them, he doesn't see it that way himself.

And I've thought long and hard about why that could be, and I've come to the conclusion that I don't quite believe him :p I don't know, I just can't believe that he wasn't aware that he was playing Bucky as if he were in love with Steve. He's a fabulous actor, he knows what he's doing. So for some reason he's not comfortable discussing that kind of relationship between Steve and Bucky in public, and that reason absolutely isn't that he's uncomfortable with being associated with something gay, as we well know from his previous roles etc, so what is it? It could be Marvel's influence, as they've never been super supportive of any lgbt reading of their stuff, so maybe he didn't feel free to talk about it. But as an Evanstan shipper, it's also tempting to believe that his reluctance to discuss Stucky or give any credibility to it is because he doesn't want to invite scrutiny of his own relationship with Chris. Because maybe, just maybe, it hits a little too close to home..? I know saying something like this is will probably cause some people to call me deluded but hey, thinking this makes me happy, so I don't really care 💁🏻‍♀️

1/2 I don't we're that far away from one another, in some points sure. We both want proper development but don't think it's mutually exclusive. When it comes to BW movie, it's all right there. Clues, hints, comics references that there is more to their history + credible rumors from Variety, HR of him being in her movie, even if it is as Winter Soldier. His past is very relevant to his character, we don't know much about him. Sebastian Stan expressed this desire too, to develop him in this way.

2/3 Part of his redemption arc should be also Wakanda but not all, majority should be where he needs to gain some points. He’s very much hated (even if unfairly) for his past deeds. It¨s not one or the other but both. Being JUST in Wakanda is essentially hiding from where his real problems are, outside of Wakanda. He won’t earn redemption where he needs none, people like him there. Movies are based on comics right, Bucky was an Avenger in his life. Why shouldn’t he be in the Avengers? 

3/3 Tony is leaving after Avengers 4 too. He has no connection? Just like Wanda, Vision had none. Steve’s memory is important and in the comics he took on the mantle, and very likely given foreshadowing in all three Cap movies. Why shouldn’t he explore his inner circle, why people always gotta choose one or the other, Wakanda or the outside? Why not both but primary set up outside of Wakanda? BesideT'Challa has ton of characters to introduce, more white people will only anger fans 

Nothing wrong with disagreeing, and I’m enjoying the healthy discourse. You definitely make some impassioned points. For me, all the buckynat ‘hints’ we’ve gotten over the years might be leading to something substantial, but it also may very well just be little references from the comics that comic lovers will understand, but are not actually going anywhere in terms of plot or character development. Only time will tell if buckynat is a viable option in the MCU. Personally, I don’t need to know anymore about Bucky’s past as the Winter Soldier. I gleamed enough of it from CATWS and CACW. So, if the BW movie is a prequel and he only shows up as the Winter Soldier, it won’t be adding to his character, imo. Because whatever ground he gains, it will undoubtedly be drilled out of him by Hydra. It won’t necessarily affect his future. That’s what I love most about the potential of the White Wolf storyline. He is now finally free of Hydra’s influence, they won’t ever be able to control him against his will. Now we get to see him make real decisions for himself and decide what he wants to do with his life. That’s exciting for me. That’s what I want to see. I understand that not everyone cares to see it, but it’s what excited me most about the character. And in terms of what Sebastian is backing, the man has been on the White Wolf/Black Panther bandwagon since the movie came out. He used to tease one day being Cap, now he reps BP at every opportunity and talked about going and reading the White Wolf comics. I think he’ll be game for anything at this point. 

If he stays in Wakanda, or keeps it as his home base, I don’t see that as hiding from the rest of the world. Wakanda will very possibly be the epicenter of the MCU moving forward and will impact the world around it. If the UN or the US government finds out he’s there, that will create consequences that could be interesting to see play out on screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if part of Wakanda’s story moving forward is their long held desire to remain isolationist vs. the need to partake in the wider world. Bucky’s presence there could play into that storyline. These are just a few ideas of what could happen with Bucky being in Wakanda. They are interesting threads that we could potentially see the future. In the CACW end credit scene, T’Challa said ‘Let them try’ when Steve suggested that the outside world may come for Bucky. That shows that he would fight for Bucky if need be. With Wakanda in the larger world, this may put them under the scrutiny of the UN and the Sokovian Accords, and Bucky may be the linchpin that creates conflict. Now, could that have just been a throwaway line from the end of the movie? Very possibly. But it could also be something we may see in the future. And to me, those are interesting themes to see play out on screen.

In the comics, it worked for Bucky to take on the mantle of Cap. It helped Bucky work through his shit. While it was effective in the comics, it’s not something I necessarily want/need to see in the movies. Bucky has always been tied closely to Steve, to the point where it dominates his characterization. With Steve gone post-A4, I want to see Bucky be his own character. That’s part, for me, the appeal of White Wolf and Wakanda. If he’s Cap, the he remains in Steve’s shadow. Also, to your point about Vision, he has many connections to the Avengers. He’s part Jarvis, and he was essentially brought to life through the efforts of Tony, Bruce and Thor. He was literally born into the Avengers. And if Bucky is in BP2 along with Everett Ross (who I bet would return), that’s still the same number of white people in the movie: two. I’m not asking for him to be co-lead with T’Challa, he would have a role roughly the same size as his time in the CA movies. As I’ve said before, he’s a character who does best in ensemble movies. 

It’s great that we have varying opinions and can explain them with clarity. I see where you’re coming from, hopefully you see my point of view. Clearly we both care about Bucky and have high hopes for where his future takes him. You could be right, I could be right or we could both be very wrong. That’s the fun of speculating, we have no idea what’s going to happen next.
