I watch The Danny Thomas Show every Saturday with my parents and every time I watch it... I can only seem to compare it to The Dick Van Dyke Show in my mind. Pretty much the same production team made both. Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas both produced TDVDS and TDTS. The big difference between the two was that Carl Reiner was the creator of TDVDS and I believe that Danny Thomas created TDTS and that clearly made all the difference in the world.
Today I was watching Season 11 Episode Episode 16 of The Danny Thomas Show called "Kathy, The Secretary" which aired on January 20, 1964 and I was comparing it to Season 3 Episode 22 of The Dick Van Dyke Show called "My Part Time Wife" which aired February 26, 1964. As you can see these two episodes aired within just a little over a month of each other. But the difference in these two episodes are light years away. In some ways they are very similar. Both have to do with the respective protagonist's wives going back to work for a little bit.
The Danny Thomas Show did not deal with this plotline at all well. It starts with the typical old plotline of a wife spending too much money on clothes and hats and whatever she wants and their joint account being overdrawn because the wife can't budget money and only cares about what she can get for herself. This is such an old plotline that was done in I Love Lucy and a billion times after. It's old and it's very much depicted in a sexist nature. After a fight between them she almost on a dare decides to go back into the work force as a secretary for Danny's talent agent. The rest is a typically sexist series of events where the joke is that Kathy is a ditz and bad at her job. At the end of the episode she stops working to continue to be a housewife. I have nothing against housewives, I come from a long of them. My mom was one for a long while. My sister is currently one and honestly if I had kids and my husband had a well paying job where I didn't need to work I would definitely consider being one myself. But back in the days these plotlines were depicted on TV in a very sexist nature in so many ways that I can only begin to describe. For one, women were unappreciated for the work that they did at home. And again women were always depicted as not having the ability to even do that well. Like women were always making their husbands crazy and putting them in the poor house. And raising children was shown to practically be a breeze when they were even shown raising their children.
You compare that to the Dick Van Dyke Show and the difference is huge. Firstly the reason that Laura went back to work was different. Sally was working temporarily on another show and as usual the guys in the office were lost without her. Which was actually a pretty ahead of it's time concept. Sally was a career woman and an integral part of her job. She did everything well. She was an amazing TV writer and typist. She could do everything the men could do and then some. Either way Sally was off and Laura offered to help out at least with the typing while Rob and Buddy were writing the show. Where TDVDS really sets itself apart from TDTS was unlike Kathy, Laura ended up being amazing at the job. Not just in typing but she was also coming up with hilarious jokes for the show. Laura came into her husband's job and arguably did it better. Certainly that week she was doing it better. And that was the source of the conflict was that Rob was being a bit insecure about his wife coming into his job and getting bigger laughs than him. Don't let this synopsis fool you though, as insecure as Rob could be he was never as insecure as Danny was. And Rob always appreciated Laura and appreciated what she did. Also there were episodes where Rob helped out with housework like cleaning the dishes and stuff like that. That may sound small and insignificant now but at the time that stuff was considered "women's work." Men brought home the bacon and took the garbage out but women did the housework. So to depict a man who secure enough to help his wife out and to do the housework even when he was teased by his guy friends was really ahead of it's time. Rob and Laura were depicted as a team. It was them against the world and that was so incredibly ahead of its time on TV. But getting back to the main point. Laura was always depicted as being so good at her job and also so good at being a housewife. But it also wasn't shown as being super easy. Back in the day women were shown as never really having emotional breakdowns but Laura was allowed to be messy, sometimes both emotionally and physically. Like there were times when things got difficult. Laura wasn't shown as being emotionally immature but she was also allowed to be vulnerable and messy sometimes... and that's just life.
I really respect how TDVDS strove to push the envelope. How they strove to depict women, black people, and marriages differently and better than it had been in TV. It seems like every show was just trying to be like every other show that had succeeded in the past 10 years just trying to be another I Love Lucy. But even I Love Lucy pushed the envelope in some ways. So they weren't really trying for the spirit of I Love Lucy they just made a bunch of generic watered down versions of I Love Lucy. Carl Reiner went into TDVDS wanting to make something different, wanting to depict marriage in a more realistic way. To depict everything in a more realistic way but also to push the envelope of what was acceptable in some ways. I'm not saying that TDVDS always did things perfectly but I love how they strove for it. How they depicted a married couple (Jerry and Millie) going to couples counseling/therapy. How they depicted the main couple as being sexually attracted to each and depicted them as a team. It really blows my mind that a show like TDVDS existed in the year 1964.

MCC Teams for QSMP Guys
Disclaimer: These aren't official teams or even official predictions or anything. I have no idea if the QSMP guys who aren't in MCC already want to play or even know it exists. I'm just autistic.
RED RABBITS: HBomb94, Philza, Forever, Cellbit
This was the first team that came to me and it all spiraled out of control from here. H is the master of teaching new players, which is good if it's not a whole event of new people (spoiler alert: it is). Philza is also a solid player who knows the Brazilians well enough to teach them how to do MCC and also hold his own just fine. I expect Forever would hold his own just fine. A lot of the games that are hard for newcomers are hard because a lot of MCC guests aren't Minecrafters. I expect Forever to be able to handle himself with an elytra, for example, and H is the SOT king and also a Buildmart enjoyer so he can pick up the slack for the rest. Cellbit may be an unexpected popoff in Parkour Tag with his Esconde-Esconde experience. I'm not sure if he's ever touched an elytra.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Cellbit. He can have red puzzle too though, as a treat. And the rest of the spawn puzzles will actually get solved for once!
ORANGE OCELOTS: Roier, Tubbo, Quackity, Punz
Roier is Good At Minecraft but he's also shy about the fact that he's good at Minecraft and not particularly interested in tryharding. He would most likely be looking for a team that isn't throwing on purpose, but also doesn't mind if he's not doing homework for the video game. Pairing him with known goofball Tubbo and good buddy Quackity makes sense for that. Punz is a very versatile S tier. He's fully capable of being a sweaty little bastard, but he's good at not being toxic about it and especially at not getting toxic towards his teammates. I think he could do well with just hanging out with a couple old friends and making sure a new one has a good time.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Quackity is the best choice as the full bilingual and least likely to survive in the tunnels.
YELLOW YAKS: Shadoune, Etoiles, Aypierre, Baghera
The French Team. Frankly, I think the chance of Etoiles getting into MCC is pretty slim. He is simply too powerful. Scott has talked before about having enough S tiers and needing more mid and lower tier players and Etoiles would Not help with that. Adding Shadoune and Aypierre to that is honestly a bit ridiculous. Baghera is not a nerf to this team either. She doesn't have nearly as much Minecraft experience as the others but she is learning very quickly. I did nearly switch her out to try and balance this obscenely powerful team. Their big weakness though is their MCC inexperience. Shadoune is the only one who has played MCC before and he hasn't even been in a handful of events yet. Late games with high learning curves could seriously hamstring them.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Pierre. I was super super impressed with Pierre's comms with Foolish when they broke into the Federation and I want to see him do comms more.
LIME LLAMAS: Illumina, Spreen, Slimecicle, Mariana
Yeah, okay, this is Pink17 with a twist. This is the only chance we're gonna have to pair Spreen with another S tier though so we gotta take it. To be fair, I don't actually know how good Mariana is at Minecraft. That being said, I do know he's not super comfortable in his English abilities. This is essentially two teams speaking two languages wearing a giant trenchcoat, so I figured it would be best to give them Illumina, king of minding his own business and showing up at the end of the game with half his team's coins.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Slime. The Spanish speakers know more English than the English speakers know Spanish and asking someone to sandkeep in their second language in their first MCC is cruel.
GREEN GECKOS: Jojo, Vegetta, Maximus, OllieGamerz
The Spanish Team. I really tried so hard to pair Vegetta with Foolish, but ultimately I think he would just be most comfortable with people who all speak his own language. This is another scary powerful team, by the way. Jojo and Ollie were half the team that got the first canon team with two new players a win since MCC 6 and Vegetta is widely considered to be a Minecraft god. I'm not sure his skills transfer to MCC, but it can't hurt! Maxo is here instead of Mariana despite being more comfortable with English because I couldn't deprive the people of their Slimeriana crumbs, however he's another one whose MCC skill I'm not sure of. He's known mostly for his RP like Quackity Slime and Wilbur, but he also has an extremely dope Create mod house so he's definitely more cracked at the craft than them.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Ollie. He's trained for it and studied for it before his first MCC and Vegetta and Maximus should both be able to at least survive dungeon conditions.
CYAN COYOTES: Mike, Pac, Fruitberries, Cubfan
Obviously, Tazercraft come as a duo. Do not separate. For them, I wanted people who matched their energy. Specifically, strange, bewildering, and staggeringly competent, while still making the most baffling decisions you've ever seen in your life. Fruitberries was an obvious choice. I think introducing them to Cubfan might be dangerous lest they give each other ideas for projects, but hopefully they'll be too focused on the games for any old projects to come up. I sure hope none of the games resemble any games Tazercraft have previously designed!
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Cubfan. He is like the Only guy in MCC who I trust equally as a runner and a sandkeeper which means that I trust him to sandkeep here.
AQUA AXOLOTLS: PeteZahHutt, Jaiden, Fit, CPK
This is just a pretty regular MCC team. Pete and CPK is a very strong combination and I don't expect Fit to be bad at Minecraft, but given the absolute powerhouses that are the French and Spanish teams, I think this is probably fine.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Fit. Pete has a habit of making risky plays that don't always pay off. I think the scary teacher voice could check that impulse.
BLUE BATS: Badboyhalo, Krtzyy, Smallishbeans, Grian
Here's a PG team for you, king. You've earned it. Yes, Dave can be PG when they need to be. For the record, I'm deeply curious about what Bad puts down on his sign up sheet for his PGness preference. Either way, this is a team of all around strong players without a standout star. We're looking at a repeat of Aqua29 here.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Krtzyy. Everyone on this team can run but Dave enjoys it the least and actually had their first decent time ever playing Sands of Time as a sandkeeper for Aqua29. They've been playing since MCC1 by the way.
PURPLE PANDAS: Scott, Shubble, Foolish, Purpled
This is the part of the teams list when I went "okay I guess I'm making a full ten teams now, so I have to get the guys with standing invitations in". For the record, that's Scott (it's his event), Shubble (she's Scott's bestie), and Wilbur (he was one of the earliest believers). Purpled is here instead of Wilbur because he's Ever So Slightly More Cracked At The Craft, however this team is actually impossible and would never happen in canon. Scott Smajor has made it very clear that he would never put Purpled on the Purple team. Anyway, Foolish is also here!
Sorrel Assigned Sanddaddy: Scott.
PINK PARROTS: FireBreathMan, Felps, AntoineDaniel, Wilbur Soot
Y'all remember everyone wailing and gnashing their teeth about Blue29 because FBM was being unfairly nerfed by being saddled with three "bad" players and it was so incredibly mean to those players he was with and also like they got 6th overall and did Literally Fine? No? Only me carrying that grudge? Anyway, here's a perfectly fair and balanced team that no one would complain about at all. No but for real, this is the team I couldn't switch Antoine and Baghera on because that would break it.
Sorrel Assigned Sandkeeper: Wilbur. Sorry Scott got to the daddy joke first.

Moritz "Morey" Amsterdam (December 14, 1908 – October 28, 1996) was an American actor, comedian, writer and producer. He played Buddy Sorrell on CBS's The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961 to 1966.

Heya!!! I wasn’t sure if I should like… wait a bit longer to ask questions cause me constantly blowing up ur inbox might get a little annoying but… I had a few more questions about ur OC, Sorrel!! Ahhh I just love him sm… she’s so silly and I gotta know more.
1: Do you have any other art of him to share with us? Or maybe like a character sheet? 2: What was the main inspo? Like… what made you choose to design a Sonic oc?
3: If you could shortly sum up your oc in 1 sentence… What would you say about her?
4: Do you have any random details that you’d just like to share with the world?
(This is kinda like a free ‘rant about ur oc’ pass cause I’m really interested in other people’s original characters and stuff)
oh its really no problem, i like receiving stuff in my inbox!! it just takes me a while to get to it bc my energy is all over the place. thanks for having an interest <3
1: its been over a year since ive last indulged Sorrel to be frank. i had spun off my sonic hyperfix, and i tend to just ignore ocs in the first place. this means i dont have anything new outside of what ive already posted. but you can check out her gallery here.
2: truth be told, i really have no clue. i think i just kinda wanted to make a sona, and it ended up ripping a LOT of inspo from shadow. my friend then made one too, and it just tumbled into us creating a gang full of spice-named queers that like to vandalize eggman and slander sonic on twitter. she really is just shadow or surge in another format, but we're cringe and we're free.
3: a queer homicidal anarchy-prone tube-baby with a taste for absolute destruction and the inedible, that acts upon pure, insurmountable internalized spite and confusion over their own creation.
4: pulling these outta my brain after so long is difficult. but ive remembered a couple of fun facts.
pronouns are he/they/she (doesn't really care tho)
(mentioned this a few times but) everyone in their posse is named after a spice! (ex: Sorrel, Cinnamon, Pepper, Paprika, Parsley...)
she has a soft spot for the little buddies of the world (like Tails)
he doesnt need to eat/sleep/or other, but dabbles occasionally
when she does eat its usually just to chew on inedible things like metal or wood
sorrel has a general animosity towards shadow that she doesnt exactly act upon, but his presence or mention riles her up
he has an extreme hatred for eggman and starline due to what they did to her friends. its on sight.
extremely greenhorn/acts before thinking
is the powerhouse of her gang (she cannot beat sonic/shadow tho)
doesn't really care for sonic or his friends but finds messing with them fun (he thinks knuckles and tails are cool tho)
despises being wet or taking off her gloves
sensitive to sound
anyyywayys there we go! hopefully ill indulge her a bit more soon so i can give better answers to any future questions... ty!

Every so often I remember that these characters exist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These guys also date back to around 2020-early 2021 and technically they’re Splatoon ocs and were originally intended to be so, but I later used them for a school project that kind of made it ambiguous so they could also just be their own thing. I’m a big fan of non inkling/Octoling Splatoon ocs bc I love how unique they can be!
I originally planned on adding them on my Art Fight profile and here was their WIP icon lol.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure how I’m gonna use these guys now but I do really like them so I may talk about them or draw them every once in a while!
Some fun facts about them:
-Francis and Spence are very good friends, they actually call each other “cousin” despite not being blood related. (Based on how sharks and rays are very closely related!)
-Spence kind of picks on Francis for having an “old person name”, but it’s all in good fun.
-Francis has been described as “A college student but without the college”.
-Spence is probably about the most average guy you’ll ever meet, it’s kind of insane.
-Sage acts like a grandparent to Sorrel, and lets him hang around the shop.
-Sage is actually really tall, but tries to stay coiled as much as possible to not intimidate others.
-Sorrel is very much whatever the equivalent of a Minecraft/Fortnite/Fnaf/FNF kid.
-Physically, he’s very parrot-like. I imagine that although flying fish are their own sentient species like everyone else, they still have the body types and movement of parrots.
-Has extremely limited powered flight, can maybe boost into the air a little bit but not much else. Mostly just glides.
-Thrasher is based on a playmobil seahorse, and actually relies on his tail more than his fins. He’s very chameleon/kangaroo-like. (I actually forgot which specific species of seahorse he’s meant to be but he’s based off a certain real one too).
Tumblr media
-The Electric Eel Guy hangs out in a bar often, probably knows Thrasher.
-Quite the practical joker, he and his buddies are often pulling pranks on each other, usually involving their own electricity. Others usually aren’t able to handle it as well though.
-Barracuda guy is a very fast runner, scarily so. Technically works maintenance but can run down anyone he spots trespassing.

Ahriman: There are only three houses in Glimmerbrook, mine and two that look like they've been abandoned for ages.
Tumblr media
Rory: Who lived in this house in your original universe?
Ahriman: Just a… woohoo partner.
Lou: That's rough, buddy.
Tumblr media
Rory: So, old houses covered in cracks and cobwebs, overgrown lawns, the whole place is off the electrical grid, and no reception.
Tumblr media
Rory: How come you get our texts though?
Tumblr media
Ahriman: As a spellcaster, I'm connected to a pocket dimension, and those exist everywhere at once, so my phone probably gets reception from everywhere. I also get my magical powers from my old universe via my pocket dimension.
Lou: Hmm…
Tumblr media
Lou: Hmmmmmm……
Tumblr media
Rory: Sorry that I changed the subject. Maybe you wanted to talk about your woohoo partner?
Ahriman: I'd prefer not to.
Lou: Hey, Ahriman.
Tumblr media
Lou: Why's the tall grass only here? Why isn't the whole place covered in tall grass?
Ahriman: The short "grass" is mostly moss and wood sorrel. The tall grass doesn't spread very well, it stays in one place, and its length would usually be kept in check with magic.
Tumblr media
Rory: Wow, this portal is huge.
Ahriman: It's for accessibility.
Tumblr media
Rory: Have you figured out why there's a portal here when there aren't any spellcasters in this universe?
Ahriman: I think I have…
Tumblr media
Ahriman: ... and I don't want to think too much about it,...
Tumblr media
Ahriman: ... but I paid them a tribute a while back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rory: Should you really live here if it reminds you so much of your past?
Tumblr media
Ahriman: Please, if there's something that reminds me of my past, it's you two. You look exactly the same as in my original universe.

trying my hand at growing some of the golden rod i harvested with my brother yesterday. we’ll see how that goes. green thumbed i am not.
i harvested some chamberbitters and yellow wood sorrel today. i’m going to need to get my jars out of storage if i keep harvesting all the native plants. i’m trying not to buy herbs online bc it’s not always sustainable (for me and my wallet as well as the earth).
i’ve been pressing plants in books and my golden rod (harvested, not my new buddy) is currently hanging from some twine i tied to a sandal in my over the door shoe rack. we make do.
i’m wondering if i should catalogue the plants i collect and the research on them here before i put it all in my big, fancy, ridiculous journal so 1) i don’t make mistakes in the pretty book, 2) i have a reference on me when it’s physically impossibly to tote the tome around, and 3) maybe it can help some strangers online.
i don’t know, i think it’s a good idea though. executive function has been great since starting the new meds so odds are high i actually do this.
