What r ur fave fics with a fuck buddies (that eventually turns into mutual love) relationship? Preferb pining. TIA. Have a lovely day!
Hi there! I have a feeling this is a really old ask but I just found it in my drafts and decided to post it asap. I love fuck buddies gone wrong! Here are my favorites:
Still Life (orphaned, M, 3k)
Two Starts, One Finish by @lqtraintracks (E, 5k)
I feel him before I see him. Nobody stands this close to me while I’m playing, and I’m about to turn to tell him so when he says, “You’re a tough bloke to track down,” and then leans against my baby grand.
the keys to your kingdom by thistle_verse (E, 7k)
It was nothing so elegant as fucking, the first time they came together. It was teeth just a little too sharp— against a collarbone, on the right-side curve of a jaw, drawing blood from the plushest part of a bottom lip.
The Things They Never Say by @bixgirl1 (E, 9k)
Harry and Draco don't know how to talk. So they do other things instead.
Clear As Mud by scoradh (M, 10k)
Set post-war and post-Harry's-conscience...
fine i'll hold my breath / til i forget it's complicated by teatrolley (NR, 11k)
Harry and Draco become friends with benefits, and Harry thinks it's more complicated than it actually is.
What Real Thing? by @l0vegl0wsinthedark (E, 12k)
They don’t cuddle, they don’t talk about their relationship (or lack thereof) and they certainly never fall asleep in each other’s arms.
Reparatio by astolat (E, 17k)
Draco snorted. “I’m not reduced to penury. I want something considerably beyond money, and I rather think you’re the only one can give it to me.”
Five Weddings and a Potions Accident by lauren3210 (E, 19k)
In which Harry thinks he’s a playboy, everyone else knows better, and Hermione will kill Seamus if Ron tries to collect on that bet.
Watch The Castles Burn by @moonflower-rose (E, 21k)
Draco Malfoy knows better than to get involved with Harry Potter. If only someone would have reminded him of that six months sooner, then maybe he wouldn't be in quite such a large mess.
A Convenient Impracticality by @firethesound (E, 38k)
Somehow Harry ends up agreeing to a fake relationship with his ex-nemesis-turned-friendly-acquaintance-with-benefits, except for some reason it involves an awful lot of actual dating and, sadly, not much sex. Confused? Harry is too, but when has anything with Draco Malfoy ever been as straightforward as it seems?
We Are Young (I'll Carry You Home Tonight) by Femme (E, 68k)
Harry and Draco have been falling into bed on and off again since the last election five years ago, much to the amusement--and financial gain--of their circle of friends.

Jake “Hangman” Seresin x f!Reader
AN: Here is an excerpt from the first part of my Hangman series titled Vertigo that I will be posting relatively soon 😌
Content Warning: Mentions of sex, nothing graphic.
“Can I get four Buds, sweetheart?” Hangman flashed you his signature dazzling smile with the request. You had to hand it to yourself; the amount of self restraint you were displaying by not immediately launching yourself over the bar and strangling the bastard at just the mere sight of Jake’s stupid, stupid face was something you didn’t even know you possessed. The fact that he felt like he could just waltz back into The Hard Deck like he didn’t play the long con to inevitably hump and dump you before disappearing for six months without a courtesy “have a nice life” nearly set you over the edge.
To anyone else in the bar, Hangman’s team excluded after witnessing it with their own eyes, they wouldn’t have thought either of you were interested in one another. Of course there was the usual flirting found in this type of establishment; you flirted for better tips and Jake flirted with anything that had tits and walked on two legs.
You -not once in your entire adult life- had ever given guys like Jake Seresin the time of day -and for good reason. What changed for you to go back on your own ground rules? I’m sure you could take a wild guess.
The phrase ‘opposites attract’ was so clichéd, and you hated to think on it a second longer than you needed to, but that’s exactly what your “relationship”with Jake was. It started out with friendly teasing while he spent his free time in the bar, and that slipped into more intimate banter, which then moved on to Jake slipping into you…
It was a slippery slope.
“What can I get you?” You asked the patron to the right of Hangman, completely ignoring the pilot. The customer shifted his eyes between the two of you, clearly feeling the growing tension, and cleared his throat before ordering a couple of drafts.
“$12 even,” Setting the glasses on the bar top with a smile, you offered to start a tab for him. The man nodded and handed his card over before scurrying off to his friends to avoid whatever was happening between the both of you.
“Come on, babe,” Hangman brought a hand up to his heart and gave her a pained look. “You wound me.”
“Not enough to keep you out of here, apparently,” The glare on your face was enough to make Jake’s cocky grin slip just the tiniest bit as you stuffed the credit card in the bar’s rolodex with a little more force than necessary. You leaned yourself on the bar in your elbows and pointed your trusty bar key threateningly at the pilot. “You want a drink? Get it from Jimmy,” You tilted your head to the 76 year old barkeep who was puttering around at the other end of the bar pushing a yellow mop bucket around and definitely not making drinks. “Or Penny, if you can find her.” Penny actually had the night off, but you weren’t going to let Jake know that.
Moving on to take the order of the sailor to the left of Hangman, you didn’t wait for him to respond. Hangman groaned and fixed you with a look.
“Don’t be like that! We had fun!” You placed the pint of beer on the bar and the man handed over a ten with a wink. “You know how it is,” Jake said with an innocent shrug.
“All set, sweetheart,” The man said with a charming smile. “Give me a holler if you need me to take care of this for you, ma’am,” His eyes shifted to Jake assertively, then back to you.
“Thank you,” You replied sweetly to the man and returned his smile with a dazzling grin of your own just to irritate the pilot in front of you. The stranger swept his eyes over Hangman once more to size him up before shaking his head and scoffing lightly before taking his drink back to his buddies.
“What the hell was that?” Hangman asked, absolutely beside himself. “You know that guy?” He gestured his thumb over his shoulder.
“Do I know who?” You replied dumbly, getting an absolute thrill out of this. Hangman’s jaw dropped ever so slightly.
“Really?” He had the balls to look mildly irritated with the bartender. “What the hell did he think he was going to do?” You grabbed the empty glasses a few spots down from Hangman that had recently been vacated by a group of girls, but stopped in front of him on your way over to the sink.
“I’m sorry, who are you again?” You asked with your best customer service voice and smile before setting the drinkware in the sink.
“He was flirting with you,” Jake stated, but it sounded like more of a question than anything else. You groaned and turned around to face Hangman with a very dramatic roll of your eyes.
“Yeah, that’s how it goes here. You think you’re the first person in the Navy to bat their pretty eyes at me? Flash their pearly whites? Ha!” You took a checkbook from a freshly vacated area on the bar and placed the cash left in the black book into your tip jar next to the register before continuing to serve the other customers. You made one more stop in front of Jake, your eyes cutting straight through him. “You’ve never been my only option here, nor my best one, Bagboy.” Your tone was like ice, sending a chill down Jake’s spine. Then it’s of it was making him second guess coming up here to bother you. “Remember that.”

“Did you learn anything new?” Kono asks when he’s drank most of the bottle.
“Not really. Did Wo Fat ever have like a thing for McGarrett?”
“Steve? Like in what way? He’s obsessed with making him miserable, and Steve’s just as bad—can’t let Wo Fat go.”
“Like sexually.”
“Ew—no. Absolutely not. Besides, Steve had Cath, and when she left, I thought maybe he’d make a move on Danny since Steve stares at his ass enough, but no. Steve’s oblivious unless it’s Danny.”
“So why doesn’t he make a move on Williams? Buck made it sound like they’re hopelessly gone on each other.”
“You realize this is like talking about my brothers, right?”
“So you won’t mind and have opinions then,” Eddie jokes with her.
“I have two hundred bucks on them getting together before Christmas. Chin says not until after. Half of HPD is betting on them.”
“Isn’t gambling illegal in Hawaii?”
Kono’s grin is unrepentant. “Nah, brah. This is just all in fun.”
“So, would it be violating the terms of the bet if I shove one of them in the other’s direction after we get out of here?”
“I have a side bet on Danny making the first move—double or nothing. Kamekona also bet me that Danny will want it slow and won’t let Steve move him in before six months. There’s no way Steve won’t kidnap Danny and the kids at the first opportunity once they’re together.”
“I can work with that,” Eddie agrees. “If all else fails, I’ll enlist Buck.”

Nanowrimo 2022 Is Looming
Anyone else doing nano this year?
Tumblr media
I did nanowrimo last year for the first time and found that, challenging as it was, something about my brain responds really well to the structure and deadline of the event. I drafted my first novel, The Afterlife and Other Problems, during last year's event, hitting 50k by the end of the month and finishing the whole initial draft about two weeks after the event ended at around 74k.
At the time, just getting it done felt like a major miracle -- I was reeling from the loss of a really important friendship, desperately burnt out at work, and literally wrote 15 of the 30 days of it at the hospital bedside of my critically-ill father feeling very dark and lonely and lost. (He survived, thank god.)
But writing it? Writing it saved me, I think, at a very bad time. Writing it was fun and exciting and above all, kind of a great distraction, and I went on to revise it over the next six months and came out with a pretty good book.
So, of course, I'm gonna do it again because I'm a glutton for punishment I'm highly motivated. :)
And I've got an idea I'm really excited about. It's funny and deep and weird and I think it's gonna be great, if I can pull it off.
So I'm doing Preptober, right now, where you outline and plot and do writing prompts and figure out enough of a roadmap to get yourself able to sit down every single day in the month of November and pump out 1667 words, more or less. Even though I tend to be a pantser when I write (meaning someone who just wings it without much planning), you have do at least some kind of minimal planning to write this much in a month.
And it's interesting, because I suddenly am seeing how much I've learned over the last year. My approach this time is very different!
For one thing, I seem to have learned something about how to outline. Last year I had maybe three major plot points and a series of possible funny events that would happen in the first third of the book and that was it. This year, I've got a high level, rough, but much more thorough outline of most of the book. (With some holes, sure, but for me this is a TON of information.)
More importantly, I'm finding myself instinctively starting from a whole different perspective. Last year I had maybe a hook and some events, but knew very little about my characters, and this year I'm starting from a very clear idea of who my main character is and what she wants and fears, which is how the writing books always tell you to do it, but honestly until now I've never begun a project that way.
It remains to be seen if this will turn out to be a viable book or not -- but I *love* seeing progress in myself with respect to the craft of writing. I've learned so, so much, since I started drafting Faeted, three years ago, or since I eeked out my first Doctor Who fanfics in 2017.
SOOOOO anyhow, that's a long-winded way to say this: if you're nano-ing next month and want to be buddies, drop me a note! It was fun to have writing partners on the nano site last year to chat with about the process and cheer each other on as we posted our daily word counts. I'd love to connect!

Hi buddy! Its Athena, I'm sending this out to all my mutuals - what got you into writing, what inspires you, who inspires you and what music inspires you to write? what do you love about writing?
Thank you so much for asking! I'm finally getting around to answering now, but I've had these questions in my head ever since they arrived in my inbox. I knew this was going to be a long post, so I've put it off until there's been a good time, which is today.
What got you into writing?
I learned to read when I was three, and we've always had a house full of books. Most of my collection is digital now, as I've moved house (internationally) too many times in the last ten years to keep a bedroom full of paperbacks, but books have been a huge part of my life.
It's hard to say what exactly got me into writing, because I don't really remember not writing... but I think my biggest inspirations have been Hilary McKay (author of the "Casson Family" books, and my namesake), Anna Godbersen (I love the "Luxe" series!), and the "My Story" series that Scholastic released (various authors, but I think Alison Prince and Valerie Wilding are my favourites!) in the early 2000s.
We had some Creative Writing lessons in primary school, with a teacher who then discouraged us from writing creatively (sheer peculiarity of that person), so I took up writing defiantly, and got good at hiding paper up my sleeve, in my pockets, in my socks, anywhere I could be sure it wouldn't be found. At one point, I was carrying around probably 5,000 words at a time! My friends used to help me break into the teacher's desk to get my confiscated work back, and I'm still so grateful to them for doing that.
Through secondary school, I kept writing for fun, and wrote several drafts of what has become "This Still Happens" during my GCSEs and A' Levels. I was lucky enough to take Creative Writing A2 with AQA before the government shut the course down, and I still use the techniques I learned from those extremely kind, encouraging teachers.
What inspires you to write?
My creativity always seems to kick in when I'm on the train. Whenever I travel, I take my phone with me, and if it's likely to be a long (more than 15 minutes, in my book) journey, I take along my Bluetooth keyboard as well. I bought it when I was seventeen, when I had some "treat" money leftover from my summer job, and I started taking it with me to Sixth Form that September. It was so much easier, not to have to lug my laptop around.
This was 2016, I think: the glorious days of LitLift, which was a bit like Scrivener, but web-browser based, and fizzled out in 2018, after about six months of patchy service. Luckily, I never kept anything exclusively on LitLift, so I didn't lose anything. There was one chapter of "This Still Happens" (in an earlier version) that I had to rewrite entirely, because LitLift lost it before I could back it up, but that was at least half my own fault, for not saving as I went! (No harm done in the long term, anyway. I completely rewrote the book the following year!)
Having my Bluetooth keyboard feels like a good compromise between a desktop/laptop computer and a typewriter. I can set my phone up at a distance, and make the font big enough to see from the other side of the room, and bang out a few pages of my story without much temptation to edit while I draft! As I say, it's so portable, and makes writing so much easier. I used to take it to work and write in the kitchen during my lunchbreaks, but, now that I work from home, I'm just as likely to use my laptop.
There is something very inspiring about graveyards, and I want to write a story set in one - in the vein of Brookwood or Highgate - one day. They're not spooky for me, just extremely beautiful and peaceful. And, of course, I take a lot of inspiration from real life. "This Still Happens" is inspired by my own experiences - not exactly mirrored in the book - and "Curls of Smoke" has a lot of roots in the time I spent in my local Gang Show. I wish I could dance like Florian and Rhiann can (though I'm content to wiggle in my swivel-chair)!
Who inspires you to write?
"Violins and Violets" character Katharina Schmidt is inspired by Maria Anna Mozart, older sister of Wolfgang Amadeus (who inspired Hans Schmidt). I learned about her when I was twelve, studying for my Grade 4 piano; "Allegro in F" from the "Nannerl Notenbuch" was on the syllabus, and I was immediately intrigued. For one, I just like the name Nannerl (how do you get that from Maria Anna? (not that my family's nicknames make any sense to outsiders)). Then, when I looked her up, I found out that she was probably just as good a composer as Wolfgang, but forbidden to make music because she was a woman?! What did the world lose when it shunned her? That's the question "Violins and Violets" asks, and tries to answer... and more to the point, "What might have been?"
"Vogeltje" as a whole novel was inspired by one conversation I had with a friend in a coffee shop one afternoon in 2017. We're both Disabled, in very similar ways, and we've always been frustrated by the prevailing idea that being Disabled makes us in some way tragic, or less deserving of the spotlight. So, I decided, I would write a novel where the main character was Disabled (in the same ways as we are!) and she does get the spotlight, and she does get to be the lead, and she does get to be sexy and attractive and have agency. I love drafting it - it's been on hold for ages now and I want to get back to it - because every time I do, I get to know Marianne Stafford a little bit better, and it's like I have yet another friend I can relate to.
What music inspires you to write?
I have lots of playlists for my writing, usually inspired by a character or a pairing, but sometimes serving as a soundtrack for the whole book.
I like to save pieces of Baroque music that remind me of "Violins and Violets", especially if they remind me of something the characters would compose, and for "This Still Happens", I have a playlist of all the songs I was listening to when I wrote it.
Over about seven long drafts, it's a long playlist, with music from when I was still at school! M83's "Midnight City" features heavily, and appears in the soundtrack for "Curls of Smoke" as well.
What do you love about writing?
The best bit has to be getting to decide what happens next. So little of life is in our control, but when we write stories, we have absolute say. We can make things happen just for fun, because we think it would be nise, or because, yes, it would be horrible if XYZ happened, but we can rewirte it and change it later on, if we want.
I'm a big fan of the 1999 film and 2016 series "Frequency" for the same reason; the characters get to decide what happens in their lives (but I don't like the consequences they suffer, so I'd rather be a writer than a "Frequency" character!).

A whole month (oof) after saying I'd be giving regular updates on my Buddie Survivor AU WIP, I'm finally here with one! I have some good news and bad news.
The good news? The finale chapter has been written, a Sole Survivor has been crowned and the million-dollar check has been awarded!
The bad news? After writing drafts of the first six Tribal Councils and getting a little stuck, I decided to work backwards from the ending, so there's still quite a bit left to write before going through and editing. It's all outlined for the most part though, so I'm hoping it won't take an ungodly amount of time.
Part of the struggle is that I want to give each "player", regardless of placement, their own satisfying story arc, and since the fic is called Thirty-Nine Days, I felt it was appropriate to write something for each day of the game. The hope is that it's not a 1:1 of days to chapters because that would be a little insane, but at the same time, I don't want to leave anything good on the cutting room floor. So I think as long as I'm in the drafting phase, the plan is to write whatever feels good in the moment, and then pare it down if I have to when it comes time to edit.
A small graphic to show where I am with each day of content to hold myself accountable: a checkmark means a draft of that day is complete, a clock means the draft for that day is partially written, and an "X" means that I haven't started writing that day yet. So, yeah... still a lot to go. But as a tease, I'm going to do something crazy and post an unedited snippet from Chapter 1 on here tomorrow! It warmed my heart to see such a big crossover in 9-1-1 and Survivor fans, and to know how many people were interested in reading this. It's done more for my writing inspiration than you'll ever know! Going to try to stay consistent with these status updates, and maybe come out with more sneak peeks every so often, if people are interested. I refuse to let this fic die unpublished!

First and foremost, we have some exciting new changes that everyone can get behind. Absolutely nobody has a problem with the new experience globe mechanics. New experience globes are only at full value for six seconds, and after that are worth 25% exp. And then they last for thirty-nine seconds. Nobody finds this objectionable in any way. This change was not on the PTR due to public outcry from Reddit when it was leaked early, but it’s here live with all of its zero problems fixed.
Another change about which we have received zero complaints is a new tag system behind the scenes. People looking for just the right hero for the situation can easily find it by searching for such keywords as “CC” “Silence” “Sustain” and “Double soak” and find extremely useful and not absolute garbage results. Don’t worry about checking it ahead of time, just get right into draft mode and use it to find the perfect pick!
In addition to those minor and unobjectionable changes, we have removed Volskaya Foundry from the ranked queue, and added everyone’s favorite quickmatch map, Warhead Junction. We have also done this simultaneously with an Overwatch-themed event.
Hero changes below the cut, because this patch is another doozy, with fiiiiiive herooooo rewoooooorks, Four buffed assassins, three nerfed offlaners, two nerfed tanks and we also nerfed the looost viiiikiiiings!
Anduin is the first of our reworks and with him taking a more prominent role in Shadowlands we want to be able to welcome WoW players with open arms. He, uh, doesn’t have a new skin or anything, we just want people to play this game. The central goal of the buff is to improve his healing output in line with other heroes without removing the largest strength in Leap of Faith. As such, we’re just touching literally every part of his kit and talent try and praying that it goes the way we want.
People keep mistaking Johanna for the best tank in the game. This is factually untrue, since Muradin exists. As such, we are just gutting the absolute pants off of Johanna’s talent tree and making it weird and clunky.
For too long has Raynor been the scourge of draft play. Too good to skip, but not scary enough to ban. Perfect macro contributions, with respectable hero damage. Enough self-sustain to take weight off your healer, and self-peel for when tanks are bad. The perfect killing machine. As such, we’ve nerfed his damage into the ground. Start playing Greymane, bitches.
Stitches has proven to be a mediocre bruiser in the eyes of the community. After all these years, I think I know why. We accidentally categorized him as a tank. As such, he needs some serious changes to make him fit that label. This whole time we’ve been balancing him as a bruiser and nobody said anything? This is as much your fault as it is mine.
The average damage output of a ranged assassin has been steadily climbing for a while now. As a result, for a hero to actually be a glass cannon, they need some serious firepower. Valla now has the gunpowder to match her glass. And she’s the glassiest cannon there is. Don’t get me wrong, she still evaporates like a drop of water in California when an enemy hero looks at her. But when she has a solid tank and three healers behind her, the world is your oyster.
Oh my god they didn’t break down the heroes by category. Jesus Christ what the fuck Blizzard? You just decided that this is the line? This is the day you stop caring? Well, congratulations, you’ve made reading your patch notes mildly more inconvenient. I’m still doing this. Ya bunch of jack-offs.
Mei has been grossly overperforming, and we have no idea how that happened. We certainly didn’t buff her over and over again for an entire year. Anyway, we’re just going to roll some stuff back. Definitely probably fine.
It turns out - and bear with me here because this might be hard to follow - Hogger, D.va, and Sonya were all overtuned? For six months? So we’re just gonna tippy tappy them down the smallest little bit. And then slap them around a little for good measure. D.va’s mech form is no longer indomitable, Hogger can no longer solo any merc camp in the game in 12 seconds, and Sonya is now... Basically fine still, honestly. We kinda gave her just a slap on the wrist in comparison. But honestly after gutting Hogger like that, I just didn’t have the heart. One of the benefits from being a little later, alphabetically.
After riding the TLV train up through the ranks, I think it’s about time to recognize that I’m not actually good at them. They’re just overtuned. So it’s time to come back to earth, Icarus. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly-small HP nerf, though. The real nerf is buffing Longboat Raid. People are going to have to pick it to test it and it’s gonna murder their winrate.
Someone told me that Lucio is a problem and needed to be addressed this patch, but my cat came into the home office being adorable so I didn’t hear exactly what they said. So we had to kinda wing it. Hopefully these minor adjustments to his talent tree will solve whatever they were talking about!
Even we know Uther is a problem. Being first pickable and filling three different unique roles was what we wanted to do with Varian not Uther. So we’re going to try and make him incrementally worse at tanking until he just goes away. First up: Shaving off some of that personal armor.
AFK splitpush trash Azmodan is dead. Long live teamfight artillery mage Azmodan. Really glad I made the last HotS Content post about Nova instead of Azmodan because boy howdy do these changes invalidate the entire playstyle that post would have discussed.
W build Falstad has obviously become a problem. Not only was he riddled with bugs after the rework - don’t worry, we learned from our mistakes and made sure there were no bugs with our new reworks - but also he had the ability to point and click on an enemy hero and force them to run all the way to the next lane over in order to stop taking buckets of free damage. It turns out that ability was more powerful than anticipated, and required adjustment.
Q build Falstad has obviously become a problem. Not only was it completely overshadowed by a build that did more damage in every situation with less skill requirement, but we overestimated the value of macro power on a build that demands PvP for stacking. As such, we’ve doubled the amount of power each stack gives him! That’ll do.
AA build Falstad... Stay the course, buddy. Doin’ fine.
Junkrat has been underperforming, which is surprising for a hero with his level of power. As such, we’re going to make a few small buffs to hopefully draw attention, and then we can roll things back once the pickrate reflects his actual power. Hopefully then WE CAN FINALLY MAKE THE MANDATORY CHANGE I PUT IN EVERY MEMO. TYRE. WITH A Y. THAT’S HOW THEY SPELL IT IN AUSTRALIA. KAEO I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU- wait, did Kaeo leave? Who the fuck is still here? Kinnabrew? Adam? Jason? JASON! JASON!?
Tassadar has also fallen off a lot without us having done anything at all whatsoever to nerf him. Entirely undeserved treatment. I’m disappointed in all of you. As such, we’re going to tweak his numbers up just a little tippy tap so that you all remember who killed the Overmind. It wasn’t James Raynor or Sarah Kerrigan. It was Tassadar... Tassadar Bassadar. That’s his last name. Don’t look it up, just trust me.
In the bug fix department, we’ve had a nice sit-down with the Mountain Giants on Alterac and told them that if they have time to lean, they have time to clean. Reaching the end of their lane and expecting the core to come to them is putting undue stress on an already overtaxed position. The core is a very stressful job, and if the mountain giants could just do their part to walk into the core pit when they arrive, that’s a huge load off their shoulders. Drek’thar and Vanndar really needed this expectation taken off them right now, and I’m hopeful it will lead to a better work environment.

Tippen’s Fics In Progress Update
It's been almost six months since I did one of these so it's time once again for a fics update. Join me below for a list of everything I'm working on and what you can expect in the next few weeks to months.
As always, you can find my fics on  AO3 * FanFiction.net.
In Progress
The following fics are currently posted still updating.
The B-Team (A Catra and Bow Buddy Adventure) - I know everyone is really eager for the next part of this but I thought of a much better ending than the one I originally wrote and the next chapter is the last chance I have to set the pieces for that up before we get into the climax. So I paused it temporarily while I rework the last few chapters and then we'll go back to more regular updates.
A Merry SPOP Shipsmas!- Unless something unexpected happens, I'll be posting the last three stories from this (Seamista, Scorfuma and Glimbow) leading up to the end of the month. I also outlined stories for other ships I could write if I finish the others early but I may save them for next year.
First Kisses We Didn't Have - The last story in this collection (the Princess Prom one) is written... it's just spread out over a whole bunch of files and I need to take some time to Frankenstein them all together into one coherent thing. This will just go up randomly whenever I suddenly find myself in the mood to work on it.
Glowing Up: The Princess and The Pirate - There are four main sections to this fic. The first meeting, all of which is already up, their second meeting, then the story of Bow starting the lie of the school and finally a little capstone to the whole thing. All of this is written but I like to have a whole section edited and ready to go before I start posting it which is why this is paused until I get section two ready to go.
Prince Bow and Archer Glimmer - I have written this up until the end of Season 1. I have outlined this all the way through the equivalent of season five. I didn't want to start posting more of this until I completed some of my other fics but I have been in the mood to work on it so maybe I should just start embracing the total chaos of having a billion fics in progress at once!
Drafted but not yet posted
These are fics that I have written the first draft of but haven't actually started posting yet.
Going There (my big Season 5 from a Glimbow perspective fic) - I know, I know. I keep talking about this and not posting it. BUT I hope to start posting this before the end of the year and then it will be updated sporadically based on my whims.
Coming Home - this is the sequel to Going There and continues the story Post-War and I could technically start posting it right now because it's all written... but I would rather get Going There up first so it works like a true sequel.
Glimmer's First Connection to the Moonstone and Glimmer's First Teleport- I wrote these two fics to be a standalones but I think I might actually just make them chapters in Glowing Up to simplify my life. They are pretty much ready to go so as soon as we reach the point where they would happen in Glowing Up, I'll post them.
The Outlaw of the Whispering Woods - Glimbow Robin Hood AU! Like, I cannot BELIEVE there isn't one out there already? What are we all even doing here? Anyway, I am really proud of this one and eager to start showing it to you.
Beasts AU - Because it crushes my will to live when people nag me to update fics, I'm going to be posting this AU as a bunch of standalone one-shots. I have written the Glimbow one (I mean, duh) and then outlined ones for Catra, Adora, Mermista and Perfuma. Those will be posted whenever and maybe not even in order.
Then there are a lot of things that are only partly written including about four or five more chapters of my Horde Glimmer AU (tho I've outlined a ton more of it), a sort of spin-off of Tuna Cans with a little more angst and bunch of other things I'd like to keep close to the vest until I actually post them. I really want to get one more fic up before the end of the year to bring me up to exactly 30 fics and I would like that to be Going There... but I also won't let myself start to post that one until I finish at least one more of the in progress fics.
I'm trying to toe the line between being that person with too many fics in progress and the fact that I am a happier writer when I chaotically jump between projects.
So, that’s what I’m working on.
As I am doing this for the low low price of FREE, if you’ve ever gotten anything out of one of my fics, or want to support my writing in the future, Tips are super appreciated! ko-fi.com/tippenfunkaport

“Your heart began to sing, sing triumphantly as if you broke some sort of curse- Curse? Wait, hold up. Hold the fuck up. I think he’s my soulmate?! But I can’t possibly have one-”
Cursed series 1/?-  ~001~  😈🤓😳~
Growing up, not a single day passed without your single mother reminding you that meeting your soulmate wasn't going to happen for you. The odds were not at all in your favor, not her’s, not your grandmother’s and not even your great grandmother’s mom; being the youngest girl of the youngest in the family made you carry such a burden. The streak that your family had going on for generations was too strong to break at this point. It’d be a miracle and a half if you ever heard of your soulmate for a fraction of a second. You started to accept by the time you learned how to read, that a life with a soulmate was frankly not in the cards for you.
To say you were completely and utterly blind-sighted when you met your soulmate, would be the understatement of the century. You lived your whole life with no fear or any expectations of long lasting relationships whether it’s with a soulmate or not. You lived the life you knew many people with soulmates or obsessions with commitment couldn’t live. You lived a life of freedom, focused on yourself.
Now, it's been three months at this university; three months, and you already have a reputation that precedes you. Contrary to popular belief, you don't like the attention. Yet somehow the spotlight seems to follow you. Though, you would argue you weren’t as charismatic as you were careless. Your carelessness seemed to be your charm and charming you seemed to be.
A groan tore out from your throat when as stretched over to snatch your boots. Jelly legs hobbling all over the place as you scrambled to tug them on, stubbornly not zipping down the zipper which only made it harder for you in the long run. Once on, you trudge on forward, not giving a shit if things were inside out or not, all that mattered to you was going back to sleep in your own bed. You have to remain careful though. You don’t want to go too fast and have stomach acid erupt out of you in aggravation, ruining the Sorority’s carpet and your morning. So, you watched each and every wobbly step as you did your best to navigate your way out of the crowded, trashed halls of the post-party filth. Fortunately, it seemed you’ve risen before anyone else, no conscious creatures for you to deal with.
The clock struck six o’clock as you strut down Greek row, your steps more firm now, waking you up more with each step. However, waking up meant more hangover symptoms, though you weren’t exactly sober. You made it about four more clumsy steps down the sidewalk before a car slows down next to you. This has happened to you more times than you can count, but never when the birds were fucking chirping. You huff out in irritation, walking faster, thus, less firm as you tried to remain calm.
Who the hell pulls up to you when it’s fucking sunrise?! Unbelievable.
You only make it two more steps before the right next to you. Even though you tell yourself not to, your head swivels to look at the driver on instinct. He looks vaguely familiar, you’ve seen those cheeks somewhere but his name is lost on you. You acknowledge him with a questioning look as he rolls down the window.
“Want a ride?” He offers like you’ve known him for ten years and your pets were best friends. You were expecting a catcall but his voice was full of awkward sincerity and a bit of reluctance that couldn’t be faked.
“I thought chivalry was de-ad.” You choked, giving a nudge with your words to test his sincerity.
“I thought you liked girls more and don’t believe in it anyway.” He dished back. Okay, fair. This guy’s a real one.
“Touché... Ohhh what the helll-” You huffed, “I’ll take it.” You vaguely recognize him and he seems to know you too so what can hurt; that’s at least how you look at it in the buzzed moment.
His unimpressive car comes to a smooth stop, you hear the doors unlock and you sluggishly yanked the door open and groan as you slide in, kindly ignoring the mess because you’re not much better.
“Did you not party last ni’?” You blurted, looking over at him with a dry smile. As you do, you can really take him in. His dark, messy hair and his cute over-expressive face, topped with a pair of doughy cheeks. Despite the cuteness, there’s not a doubt in your mind this is some frat boy on the college team, though you’re not even sure what team is in season right now. One thing was for sure though, his guns were proudly out of a cut out muscle-t like a living, breathing fuckboy starter pack. Infuriatingly, he pulled it off, he looked too attractive for this time, on the weekend especially. With all that being said, he seriously looks like the kind of guy that should be as fucked up as you are right now. And yet, here he is, behind the wheel looking as sober as a slice of bread.
“Nah,” He starts, getting his foot off the brake and turning back into the road, “me and my soulmate stayed in ‘cuz coach is making practice earlier than usual.”
Well, that train left the station. “Ahh, that-that's too bad.” You heard yourself pettily trail off.
“Nah, ‘zall good. I think coach is taking it out on us ‘cuz his wife found out he’s doin’ drugs and gambling again-“
“Do ya have any friends like you?” You blurted out again.
“Huh??”
“Do ya got any friends that do things like this?” You grumbled, resisting the urge to facepalm at yourself. Fucking hell, Y/n.
“That go to practice this early? Yehh. The whole fucking basketball te-“
“No!” You hiss, head pulsing, his voice is too goddamn loud. “Gentlemen!” clarifying and sulkily leaned your head against the cool window.
“Ohhh!!~” Then he belts out laughing like a blaring fire alarm, making your entire brain rattle.
“Shhhh!” As you turn to glare at him, you realize your turn was coming up. “Wait!! Turn here!!”
He hissed and stepped harshly on the breaks. “This one?”
“Yeah!!-“ it was already too late when you unnecessarily clarified, so he had to turn around and go turn in again. Thank god the streets were dead at this date and time. You’re sure he broke at least four traffic laws.
“Shit, man!! You can’t say that and then expect me to make the turn, I got too excited!!” He was beaming, far too excited for your dumb question and not at all concerned about his chaotic driving.
“What the fuuck?!?! You’ got a soulmate-“
“No, dumbass!!” He whines like you just missed the best play in the whole game, too bad there aren’t instant replies for day to day conversations. “I have a bro who we’ve been trying to get laid.~” And now he makes the turn, good job buddy.
“Okay, two stops from now you’re gonna turn left.” It is then that you realize the last part of what he just said. “Huh? Li-like frat bro?”
“Yeah, dude. He’s so pissy I don’t think his hand is doin’ it for him anymore.” The dude laughed at his own joke, elbowing you in the side. Normally you would have joined in and punched him but for some reason, your little fucked up heart started to warm up hearing about this cute frat boy.
“Ahhhh.” And then you laughed a little too late, his wingmanning ass didn’t notice.
“Yeah! And he says books are better than pussy so that’s how we know he’s becoming a lost cause. We’re placing our bets that he won’t get it on until he finds his soulmate.”
“What a swee-eetheart.~” You hiccupped with dazed eyes and chapped smile. You had to admit, you were endeared. You never heard about a dorky, innocent fraternity boy before, and you never would have thought that it would appeal to you.
“Is it this one or the next one?”
“This one. So whoo’z this friend of yours-“ Unfortunately you were caught off by a ringtone blasting at the fullest volume making your brain wail in pain, for the second fucking time this morning.
He just snickers. “Sorry, gotta answer this… Yuh~?” You just huffed and closed your eyes, deflating a little bit.
“Seungmin?!?”
For some unknown reason, that name made you jolt back up into your seat. ‘Seungmin’, why does that sound so familiar?!
“Well, speak of the devil!!~” He got too excited and looked at you, and gives you an over-enthused wink. You’re assuming this is the frat bro. “Your car won’t start??~~” This dude, you still don’t quite remember the name of, was really playing this up. For possibly the same unknown reason, him talking to this dude has your full attention. Normally you’d eavesdrop half-heartedly but this time your whole heart started to beat a way it never has before, begging you to soak up as much of this half conversation as possible.
“Of course I’ll drive my wittle brother!!~... -fuck off a few days totally does count!!- Whatever!! Anyway, fair warning, I became a fucking uber this morning, I’m driving this girl too so prepare yourself!!... Shhh, it’s not a joke! And she’s really hot; make sure your heart and dick are ready.”
You were about to beat this dude before you vaguely heard the muffled voice on the other line chew him out for you. You couldn’t hold in your smile before you realized; even though you were abnormally giddy, now is not the goddamn time to meet this kid. You looked like you were run over by three different military-grade vehicles and you’re more than sure you had lipstick marks from last night smeared in various places all over you. But most importantly, you were in a limbo of drunk and hungover. You needed way more rest and sustenance before you should interact with anyone of importance. You opened your mouth to scream at him but you were cut off yet again.
“...Yeah, yeah. Anyways, I’ll turn around now, just for you.~ I’m pretty sure we’re close to her dorm but who cares how late I’m gonna be for practice! I’m making shit happen! See ya in a sec, muah!” If you weren’t high key starting to panic, you would’ve laughed at this dude’s unending ridiculousness. There is no way in hell you’re gonna meet this familiar stranger‘s friend that he’s setting you up with at six fucking a.m. in a frankly disgusting state.
“Do not turn around or I swear to fucking Rupaul-“
“No can do, bro. Besides, you seemed interested in him so why not!?! Be grateful! I’m gonna have to run double the fuckin laps cuz a’ this.”
‘“Why not’?!! I just got outta’ a stranger’s bed and I’m still drunk and somehow hungover too and my dorm is just around the corner-“
“Listen; bros before hoes. Frat legacy.” And with that, he chuckled as he turned the car around for the second time today. You take back the gentleman comment you gave him earlier, he’s a pile shit.
“I’m gonna fucking jump out of the car-“ you groaned with a bluff, tugging at your smeared face and he smugly locked the doors before you could finish. “Cmonnn!~ It’s too fucking early for this shit, man! Why didn’t I just keep walking or just stayed-“
“I'm doing you a favor!~”
“Dropping me off when and where I asked you to is doing me a favor! That’s literally why I’m in your messy ass car that smells like rancid fuckin’ cheesecake in the first place!!”
“Hey, now you’re just being mean!”
You groaned and glared out the window, opting to ignore him now. This argument had you sobering up. This just really wasn’t it. You resisted the urge to pull down the mirror and see how bad you really looked but, you would rather not know how bad it is. Knowing your past morning afters, you’ve looked a hell of a lot cuter every other time.
It seems like you’re just gonna have to grin and bear it and let this one go. There’s plenty of bitches in the sea. Bitches that never made you heart skipped like this before- and without you even meeting them-
All you could think about how embarrassing and fucked up this whole thing he’s pulling is as you glare at the passing sidewalks and cars parked at the side of the roads. You wish the passing textured and crumbly neighborhood sidewalks could swallow you up. It’s not often that you felt so burdened at an awaiting social encounter these days. You hated this.
“And we’re here!!” He stops and proudly puts the car into park. “Okay, Siri, call ‘Noodle Bitchass’.”
The fuck-
-“I’m sorry. I didn’t get that. Would you like me to search the web for ‘Nude space app’?”-
“Ughhhhh. Fuck you!! I said, ‘Call~ Nooo-DiLL BiiiiTCh AAAssss’~~!!!”
-“Okay. Calling Noodle Bitchass nerd emoji, middle finger emoji in medium tan’.”- You were about to cry in shocked laughter but the guy answered too soon so you had to snort into your hand and curl in on yourself.
“Yah!! Han Jisung!!” Holy mother almighty, his voice is pure sunshine and honey. Your body slowly uncurled back up on its own. Fuck, okay it’s on speaker. Shit, I can’t even breathe, can’t make a sound.
“We’re here, man.”
“Hhhhh… she’s not still with you is she?” Is it possible to be attracted to a voice? I think I’m attracted to a voice.
“Hell yeah, she is! Suck it up, bro. You’re already making me late and she’s fine~!!”
“Oh for fuck’s sake, Jisung-“ Oh, good lord. Him swearing really just--
“Get in or I’ll leave you here and set her up with Innie instead.” You just heard the guy sigh and the sound of a facepalm, you’re guessing, before the line went dead. And finally. You could finally howl with laughter, or perhaps it was more like manic screaming in infatuation.
You have never, in all your years of living felt like this because of a person. Is this what it feels like to be whipped? Fuck, fuck, fuck- It’s like I’m at a concert- but not really and-
You were still in the thick of it when a door ripped open. When you reflexively looked over, all the air that was left in your lungs pathetically wheezed out of you like a sad balloon.
Then the sensations all hit you.
Wow, okay the drunkenness and hangover is gone? I feel good? I feel alive, I feel the cool late autumn air? I feel feelings; feelings I’ve never felt before? You were light as a mother fuckin’ feather and astounded as all burning hell. You were openly experiencing so many intense emotions, something that hasn’t happened in so many years.
At that moment your mouth and his gawk right open at the exact same time, not that the two of you noticed. Without any volition, your eyes immediately drown in the other. Okay, he’s actual artwork? He was dressed so cute like he was ready to take some cute aesthetic photos for a dumb little blog. Oh god, he smells like a cup of tea in the forest after it rained?! That’s so specific- but. He smells so lovely.
His hair was pure angelic fluff and his skin was a light, silky caramel. You watched before your tired, dry eyes, the caramel in his cheeks rise into the purest shade of pink and his eyes widening into adorable little saucers. When they met yours, they were sparklier than any ring on any finger; you swear to god herself, you felt electricity crackle in your veins like wood to the fire.  Your eyes couldn’t pull away, you felt like a giddy little kid again. Whirling with excitement and curiosity as you looked at him all bundled up for the late fall weather. Your heart began to sing, sing triumphantly as if you broke some sort of curse-
Curse?
Wait, hold up.
Hold the fuck up.
I think he’s my soulmate?! But I can’t possibly have one-
That’s when your entire body began to heat up in question. None of this made sense to you.
How is this possible? How is this fucking possible?! The only thing your brain seems to produce in reaction is unending, spiraling questions. For each and every one of them, whether rhetorical or not, you didn’t have a sensical explanation or possible answer. This didn’t make any sense, it went against everything you ever knew to be true.
You couldn’t have a soulmate, your maternal lineage fucked that up for you, it was what you were born into without a choice. A perpetual heartbreak, something that started out as merely coincidental to grow into a family burden that carried on precariously. How can it be that for generations, the youngest daughter in the family never got to meet their soulmate until now, until you? You were on the brink of a fucking existential crisis.
Seungmin seemed shocked as well, though leagues and leagues below the ballgame you’re dealing with right now. He looked shocked; appearing delightfully surprised. Shocked as if he wasn’t expecting to be surprised with a present on a random and unimportant Wednesday, not shocked as if he just broke a generations-long family streak.
Before you can continue these heavy ass thoughts, Jisung blasts out an interruption yet again.
“I CAN’T FUCKIN’ BELIEVE THIS!! I THOUGHT I WAS JUST HOOKING UP MY BOY AT ASS CRACK IN THE MORNING!! BUT NO!! I FUCKIN’ FOUND HIM HIS SOULMATE!! AND IT’S Y/N OUTTA ALL PEOPLE!! Y/N?!? SEUNGMIN?!? THE UNIVERSE REALLY PAIRED THESE PEOPLE TOGETHER?!? OUT OF-”
“Jisung, shut the fuck up.” To your surprise, it was Seungmin who interrupts ‘Jisung’ and not you, as he gets the rest of the way into the messy car. His put-together ass looks completely out of place in this shitty car, it made you try to hold in a smile as closes the door with barely restrained enthusiasm.
Before he turns back, you force yourself to face forward and try to calm the hell down and calmly reassess the situation.
Alright... You met your not plausible-soulmate, out of all places in time and space, in the car of a kinda-stranger who offered you a ride home in the early-ass morning after getting laid at a sorority party.
Okay. Great. This is great.
You cleared your throat and tried to remain cool. “O-okay, awesome. Where ar-are we heading to first?” Okay, that wasn’t entirely cool but maybe you can blame it on literally everything else wrong with you in this situation.
“I don’t know, man. I deadass wanna just skip practice altogether and-” Jisung was interrupted by the sound of a camera’s shutter. You instinctively whip your head around towards the sound, only to be met with Seungmin camera-handed. He has the fucking nerve to take two more in the time it took for you to whip around.
“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?” Your voice ripped out of you, croaking out like an enraged toad. He then takes the final picture as you’re screeching at him. This just kept getting richer and richer. First, Jisung’s bullshit, then life-altering realizations that you broke some sort of generations long streak of not having a soulmate, and now your seemingly miraculous soulmate taking unexpected, embarrassing photographs of you in the worst state you’ve ever been in?
“Taking your picture.” He grinned with a shrug, no guilt or shame to be seen nor heard. You could not hold in squawks of disbelief. His pride and excitement seemed to only grow at your bewilderment, he had the nerve to do a precious ‘hehehe’, the kind that little kids do after they steal a cookie from the jar.
“Give me that!” You sneer as you go to savagely rip it right out of his perfect hands. However, the two of you seemed to be matched in more ways than one; neither of you would budge, equally as strong as the other.
“No way! You’ll delete them!!”
“Yeah, exactly!! ‘No way in hell will I let you keep pictures of me like this!”
“‘No fuckin’ way will I let you delete them!”
You gritted your teeth. “Then let me take pictures of you!!!” And then you can sneakily delete-
“Yeah and then you’ll delete yours.” How the fuck did he know-
“Seungmin, just give her the goddamn camera so I can drive and drop your hormonal asses off before coach murders me.”
There was a raging fire in Seungmin’s eyes as he slowly and painfully let go of his forsaken camera so you could tentatively take it. Upon retrieving the camera your fingers accidentally grab unto Seungmin’s. Resulting in a little static shock zap, startling you and heating up your cheeks immediately with a jerk and a hiss. Seungmin reacted similarly, blinking like pink dust blew into his eyes to land on his cheeks. Your hand yanks it back towards you before you even realize it. Jisung was far too excited to watch this drama unfold right before his wide eyes.
If this was a normal day for you you’d jump to delete those humiliating pictures of yourself immediately, looking nothing short of the cheshire cat. But this was evidently not a normal day in any sense of the word, so, what you did was unlike you. You huffed out a breath to encourage yourself before slowly raising the camera to your dominant eye and focused the lense as best you could.
At least I can photograph how irritatingly handsome he looks at this hour.
You took the first picture, zooming in on his now grouchy, but still stupidly handsome face. Then you zoom out as far as possible, hoping to take in this entire scene in front of you, his angry posture in an adorably preppy outfit, this messy, disgusting car and how out of place he looks in it.
“Only two more.” Seungmin huffs with an eyeroll and by some divine power (perhaps the same divine power that made this odd miracle happen in the first place), you clicked fast enough to get some of that petty behavior visually documented. You pressed down twice, sadly that was your limit you agreed upon.
You didn’t even look at the pictures you took nor the ones Seungmin took so that you wouldn’t be tempted to delete them. It felt like you were committing a saintly act; as if simply taking his picture like you said you would, without deleting anything made you pure and free of sin. Perhaps this twisted reality of somehow defeating the ancestral odds had you feeling undeservingly self-righteous.
“You better not delete yours either.” You sneered once more, before jabbing the camera back into his sweatered chest. This time you were determined not to turn around again, you couldn’t risk him taking any more pictures. You also aren’t entirely sure you could handle seeing his stupid perfect face once more. This was an outrage and this was your way of protest. Also, an unspoken miracle, but enough of that.
You swiveled your head away from Jisung and Seungmin, fully leaning into the cool window and began to count the street lights and stop signs. As the grueling seconds ticked by the more concentrated you tried to be. Soon enough the concentration turned sleepy and before you knew it, you were knocked out. All your adrenaline fueled energy depleted.
All through your protest-turned-snooze, Seungmin couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off of you. He couldn’t help but find it endearing how you could be an absolute riot only to pass out three minutes later. It hurt how cute he found you, no matter how scandalous you seem to be. You seemed so genuinely shocked, it made him want to cry. And he’s also fairly certain that this isn’t new to you, you not only partied all night and regularly. And judging from the markings on your skin, you might’ve done a little bit more than party last night. In fact, it might’ve even enticed him, might’ve gotten him a little hot under the collar. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that he already whipped and he hasn’t even caught your name.

Blue Hawaii (1961)
Elvis Presley’s ascent to stardom struck the United States (and the world) like a lightning bolt. Hounded from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry due to the country music establishment taking offense to his genre-blending musicianship, Elvis grew from being a regional phenomenon to a national sensation as he helped innovate rockabilly, a form of rock and roll. Movie producers, sensing an opportunity to cash in on Elvis’ skyrocketing popularity, gave Elvis star vehicles such as Love Me Tender (1956) and Jailhouse Rock (1957). Critics shrugged at these films – low-budget affairs where most of the budget went to Elvis’ salary – but his fans made them critic-proof, turning out in droves to scream and swoon at their slick-looking dreamboat. Grappling with television’s advent and the dissolution of the Old Hollywood Studio System, Hollywood’s major studios shifted their efforts towards more bombastic, showman-like films. Such was the situation in the early 1960s that longtime Warner Bros. producer Hal B. Wallis (1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood, 1942’s Casablanca), now at Paramount, joked that, “a Presley picture is the only sure thing in Hollywood.”
To the horror of Elvis’ fans and movie studio executives but to the delight of those fans’ parental figures and teachers, the U.S. Army drafted him in March 1958. Elvis served twenty-four months before his discharge with the rank of Sergeant. During his service, Elvis nevertheless had plenty of singles in the can, many ranking high on the charts while he was at basic training and later his posting in West Germany. Looking forward to restarting his musical and acting careers, Elvis soon returned to the recording studio and shot G. I. Blues (1960) – he had discussed the film with Wallis months prior to his discharge – in short order. For the eighth film of his career and his fourth after his discharge, Elvis starred in Blue Hawaii, directed by Norman Taurog (1938’s Boys Town, nine Elvis films) and produced by Wallis. The film stars Elvis as an Army veteran recently discharged from the service, returning to his home state. I wonder where did they get that idea from? It also marks the unlikely beginning of Elvis’ association with the Aloha State – which shed its territorial status in 1959 and was ready for a Hollywood treatment that had nothing to do with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Chadwick “Chad” Gates (Presley) returns home to Hawai’i from his military service, greeted by girlfriend Maile Duval (Joan Blackman: “MY-lee”) and a flower seller named Waihila (Hilo Hattie in a cameo). Instead of immediately seeing his parents – mother Sarah Lee (Angela Lansbury, only ten years Elvis’ senior) and father Fred (Roland Winters) – he escapes to a secluded oceanside shack with Maile and his Hawaiian surf buddies. Chad is the son of pineapple plantation owners, and Sarah Lee wants him to succeed Fred when the time comes. But Chad is not interested in those plans, electing instead to work as a tour guide for Mr. Chapman’s (Howard McNear) travel agency – among other things, Maile works at the agency. The first tour he gives serves schoolteacher Abigail Prentice (Nancy Walters) and her four teenage students, all girls. One of those girls, Ellie Corbett (Jenny Maxwell), appears standoffish at first but then begins to flirt shamelessly with Chad.
If by that point in Blue Hawaii you are still concentrating on the plot, just note that your approach to watching Elvis movies is not advisable. Watching Elvis movies for a sensible plot is to invite frustration; accept the narrative drivel and enjoy.
Shot mostly on location on the Hawaiian Islands of O’ahu and Kaua’i, Hawai’i offers splendid backdrops to even the most mundane scenes of this film. Charles Lang’s (1947’s The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1959’s Some Like It Hot) camera allows characters to be dwarfed by the green mountains in the distance, the crystal blue waters extending to the horizon, and palm tree fronds wafting amid a gentle breeze. Scenes of breathtaking natural beauty abound in Blue Hawaii. In conjunction with the production (Hal Pereira and Walter H. Tyler) and set design (Sam Comer and Frank R. McKelvy), Blue Hawaii becomes, by default, the most colorful Elvis movie to date. The film, by design, partly becomes a tourism advertisement for the new state. Its white characters and filmmakers exotify and romanticize Native Hawaiian culture to fit their own expectations and perspectives – these sorts of depictions have endured across the last century, figuring heavily in cinema (1935’s Honolulu: The Paradise of the Pacific as part of [James A.] Fitzpatrick’s Traveltalks for MGM) and tourism advertising. This is the first live-action feature film from a major Hollywood studio to make even a minimal attempt to depict native Hawaiian culture since Waikiki Wedding (1937), another Paramount film.
Here are some more connections between Waikiki Wedding and Blue Hawaii: both share one song (“Blue Hawaii”) in both their soundtracks and both films are musicals. The Hawaiian musical sound is just as integral to popular conceptions of Hawai’i, and it is used liberally here in orchestrations, if not melodic structure. Blue Hawaii’s soundtrack contains the greatest amount of songs (fourteen) for an Elvis film. For those who enjoy their breathless musicals with a song at every turn, Blue Hawaii does just that. The musical numbers arrive in the most innocuous situations – from forming a melody from a tune heard on the radio, an impromptu jam session with a guitar conveniently within arm’s length of Elvis, or starting from nothing. The worst of the soundtrack avoids many of the novelty songs that plague Elvis films, especially the later entries. Given how nonsensical the plots to Elvis movies are, the lower-tier songs in Blue Hawaii are preferable compared to more stilted acting and fraternizing shenanigans. Thus, the bar is raised, and the inclusion of two non-original songs – “Blue Hawaii” (music by Ralph Rainger, lyrics by Leo Robin) and “Aloha ‘Oe” (Queen Lili’uokalani) – are arranged in such a way that beautifully complements Elvis’ velvety singing voice. Among the original songs, “Moonlight Swim” (music by Ben Weisman, lyrics by Sylvia Dee) is a sensuous, laid back song that perfectly serves Chad’s characterization: an unabashed Casanova, effortless in romance, a hint of masculine arrogance.
The runaway hit of the Blue Hawaii soundtrack is among Elvis’ most popular songs. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” – music and lyrics by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss – appears approximately midway through the film as Chad says hello to Maile’s grandmother (Flora Kaai Hayes, a former Hawaiian Territorial Representative to the U.S. House of Representatives) for the first time since before his military service. It, like so many other musical entries in Blue Hawaii, arrives without much warning, backed by a constantly harmonizing music box and a steel guitar played in a Hawaiian style. One might take issue with the song’s use in context, but it is a crooners’ standard that has crossed linguistic barriers worldwide. Its simplicity is self-evident: a memorable melody, chorus, and a minor key bridge aching for resolution as it modulates to major key. Perhaps “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is not considered one of the greatest original songs in movie history because of the questionable quality of the film it appears in. More likely, Elvis’ gravitational pull as a crossover music and movie star writes its own legends that defy a critic’s or a historian’s corrections.
youtube
Somehow, I have written all the above without remarking on the acting. Other than Elvis himself, everyone else is a passing interest at best. Joan Blackman’s chemistry with Elvis is apparent, but she does not distinguish herself from every other female lead in an Elvis movie. Angela Lansbury’s exaggerated Southern accent displays her considerable range, even if there are better examples in other films. As much as some may deride Elvis’ performances for being unchallenging, one could not imagine an Elvis movie without the star attraction. His persona is effervescent; his charisma incontestable. According to Weiss, Elvis’ comedic instincts manifested themselves in subtle ways. If Elvis requested a joke to be explained in discussions about the screenplay, it was his roundabout, maybe overly polite, way to warn Weiss, Taurog, and screenwriter Hal Kanter (1952’s Road to Bali, at least twenty-two Academy Award ceremonies) that the joke was not funny. During test screenings of Blue Hawaii, every joke kept in the film that Elvis questioned elicited nothing from the audience. On- and off-screen, an Elvis movie with Elvis removed would collapse from the void of hilarity and charm such an absence would create.
Blue Hawaii, like all other Elvis movies prior, succeeded at the box office in comparison to its budget. Adding to this bounty for Elvis, the film’s soundtrack album sold millions of copies, sitting atop of the Billboard charts for twenty weeks, and garnering a Grammy nomination. The soundtrack profits from Blue Hawaii and the preceding G.I. Blues led Presley’s obstinate manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to have his client concentrate on film soundtrack albums at the expense of non-soundtrack albums – setting the groundwork for the remainder of the 1960s (Elvis released 16 soundtrack albums versus six non-soundtrack albums during this decade), with diminishing returns. Parker reasoned to Elvis that his fans demanded to see him in these musical romantic comedies, rejecting any roles that did not fit this mold. Elvis, believing his manager, continued to make films until well past the point an Elvis Presley picture was a guaranteed hit in theaters.
In its visual splendor and Pacific appeal, Blue Hawaii sealed the fate of Elvis’ post-Army career. No other subsequent Elvis film would match the commercial heights of Blue Hawaii, although one could argue several of those movies surpass this one in terms of acting, aesthetics, and musical interest (like 1964’s Viva Las Vegas and two concert documentaries in 1970 and 1972). Elvis returned to Hawai’i several more times during his career for concerts and two films – Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962) and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966). As much as Elvis is associated with Tupelo, Mississippi (his birthplace) and Graceland in Memphis, there is also a special relationship between Elvis and Hawai’i. That relationship – one that touches Elvis’ personal life and the musical traditions of Native Hawaiians – begins with Blue Hawaii, an archetypal Elvis film and one of his best.

Writer Tag Game
tagged by @jadelotusflower Thanks for thinking of me!
Author name: celinamarniss here and on ao3. Celina Marniss is one of Mara Jade's aliases.
Fandoms you write for: Star Wars, the Campaign Podcast (Star Wars series)
Where you post: AO3
Most popular one-shot: by hits: The Punch of Supreme Friendship, by kudos: Unexpected (even though it has half the hits, it beats Punch by three kudos which is... unexpected!)
Favourite story you wrote: I've said this before but I can never pick a favorite.
Story you were nervous to post: I get nervous a lot! (It's the anxiety!) I was much more nervous in the beginning, when I was starting out. Posting Legacy was nerve-wracking! I'm more confident now, but it can still hit me. Posting anything smutty is always nerve-wracking.
How do you choose your titles: It depends. I've already talked about this in excruciating detail here.
How many of your stories are complete?: On AO3, all stories are complete. (Possible exception is Traces of Light, which is a open-ended series of stories. It's not complete as a whole, though every short story posted so far is complete).
In progress: I have nine stories sitting in my drafts folder, in various stages of progress (and several more ideas on the back burner). Sometimes that “progress” is "two pages of words and I haven't looked at it in six months."
Coming Soon: The last command remix story. I have two or three chapters left to write, and as soon as I can figure out a title, I can start posting.
Upcoming story you’re most excited to write: This changes on a weekly basis.
Do you accept prompts: Not really. I already have so much on my plate.
Top five favorite authors: I mostly read my usual fandom buddies.
Tagging: go for it, if you have the time and inclination. yes, you!

Evak Fics - Sports
Any kind of sports or physical activity. Swimming. Skiing/Snowboarding. Football. Hockey. Others. I have a separate list for dance aus.
***** SWIMMING *****
Summer nights by Alwaysevak2121 (1k words) - Summer night, heat and swimming.
Sommernatt by Bewa (5.1k words) - The only thing that kept his mood up today was that it was Friday, and Even had promised him a surprise when he got home from work. Birthday.
cupid by evak1isak (5.2k words) - Isak, a water polo player and uni student, didn't think that he'd bump into his high school crush again. When he does, he wasn't expecting so much drama in his life.
from an earth to its sun by traumatic (18k words) - the entire world goes to bed normally and wakes up with glowing countdowns above their heads. No one's sure what causes the numbers to drop, only that when they hit 0, you hit the ground.
Drowning in your love by depressed_mermaid_53 (62k words) - Even is captain of the swim team. Isak and the boy squad join the team. In this universe a pool is a bigger part of their story.
Panic And Patch Me Up by intothewind (70k words) - (5/6 chapters posted) Swimmer Isak, Boxer Even and Boxer Jonas. Involves Josak. The thing with Jonas is complicated, but the thing with Even isn't making it any easier.
***** SKIING/SNOWBOARDING *****
Sprained Ankles, Netflix and Chill by Bellakitse (1.1k words) - Isak sprains his ankle while on a school ski trip, Even keeps him company in the main cabin.
Hot Chocolate and Snow Angels by GayaIsANerd (1.2k words) - Isak hates skiing. There’s nothing deep or traumatic about it, he just hates skiing.
Suck My Board Bitch by nyicris (1.3k words) - When Isak and Even go on a ski trip to Switzerland with their squad, they meet another LGBT couple. They don’t get competitive. At all. E!Online Poll AU + henrik’s extra ass (wow this brings back a lot of memories!)
From A Safe Distance by MinilocIsland (1.4k words) - Isak hasn't bothered to watch skiing for years. Or, so he claims. Even knows him too well not to sense the truth.
The First Noel by colazitron (1.9k words) - Even's parents have a cabin in Hemsedal where the family traditionally spends Christmas. This year, Isak's coming with.
Just Kids When We Fell In Love by wyoheartsmusic (5k words) - Isak and Even go to university 3000 km away from each other. Luckily, it's Christmas break and they had the brilliant idea to go on a cabin trip together.
Shred by Jules1398 (23k words) (SERIES, 2 FICS) - There were two versions of Isak Valtersen. The first Isak was the one that his friends knew. The second Isak, the real Isak, was trans, gay, and then there was his five year-old son, Adrian. Keeping the two Isaks separate wasn't that difficult. At least, not until he saw Even again.
Cabins, Coziness and Conspiracies by evakuality (24k words) - Isak and Even have to share a bed, their friends are strangely obsessed with their lives and things are not exactly as they might appear. Cabin ski trip.
My Very Personal Ski Trainer by Crazyheart (28k words) - Sana has invited Even and her other friends to a Holiday cabin trip, and Even needs to get in shape so that he can beat his buddies in Sana’s planned ski race.
Different, but same by Crazyheart (31k words) - Isak and Even had broken up almost a year ago, and Even was devastated. He tried to get over it and went on a ski holiday with Yousef and Elias. He met a guy that looked like Isak, except his dark, buzz cut hair, well trained body and rough, charismatic personality. The fact that he called himself Markus Simensen was even more confusing... Even started to doubt who the guy was but of course... he had to be Isak.
***** FOOTBALL *****
Norway. A Summer's Tale by wyoheartsmusic (7k words) - Isak, as the first openly gay footballer and newly recruited teammate on Norway's National Squad, travels to Russia for the FIFA World Cup 2018
Chapter 3 of take me into your loving arms by diminuendodaydream (955 words) - The Pat is a hug that is all about friendship and camaraderie.
Take Me As I Am by givemesumaurgravy (9.9k words) -  Isak is the coach of Even’s daughter’s football team and Even likes Isak’s bum. One day there’s a parent football game and Isak, just maybe, starts hitting on Even and, just maybe, Even gives in.
Hail Mary Pass by thekardemomme (20k words) - the term hail mary pass has become generalized to refer to any last-ditch effort with little chance of success. sleeping with isak valtersen until time starts running out is what causes even to realize just how vital these passes can be. American football
i didn't mean to kiss you (you didn't mean to fall in love) by shadesofcool (24k words) - football/cheerleader au with not much football and cheerleading because i(the writer) only know the basics
If You Love Me, If You Hate Me by MacksDramaticShenanigans (44k words) - (9/11 chapters posted) Isak could be chill. He was the chillest. He was a mature, reasonable adult that was perfectly capable of controlling his emotions. Not even Even could ruin that.
we've made it this far, kid by everythingislove (straykid) (60k words) - Isak is just trying to raise his nephew as best he can with the help of his best friends. He doesn't expect to fall for Felix's gorgeous football coach along the way.
And at night I dream of golden curls and pink hair bands by Zabn (80k words) - WIP. Last update Oct 2019. Even swore himself to never get involved with a football player ever again, but then he meets Isak...
***** HOCKEY *****
it started with a kiss by pansexuaIeven (1.8k words) - Chris surprises Isak with tickets to a hockey game. Things don't work out as planned, but maybe they still end up okay in the end.
"So, it was you?" by Julieseven (2.4k words) - Isak is an amateur hockey player and Even kind of falls for him from afar
Checking From Behind by DickAnderton (156k words) - Isak is to captain his hockey team this season which means he has to somehow learn to cooperate with the newest addition to their team: Even Bech Næsheim.
Checking From Behind. 2809. by DickAnderton (102k words) - Sequel.  Isak has been drafted to potentially play hockey for the KHL in Helsinki. Even is soon going to face his abusive coach in court.
***** OTHERS *****
Seriøst? by CiaraSky (716 words) - Isak and Even go ice skating.
Fireworks by multifeelings (1k words) - Just how a baseball game brings two boys together in a different way than you may think.
powerslide by evak1isak (1.6k words) - Summer is boring and Jonas teaches Isak how to skate. And at the park, Isak meets Even.
Brunch Dates and Basketball by waitineedaname (2.5k words) - In which Sana and Yousef host a double date with Isak and Even. Basketball
Flying High by colazitron (3k words) - Isak Valtersen has announced his retirement from the quidditch pitch and, ahead of his last World Cup, sits down for an interview with Magical Norway's quidditch correspondent Even Bech Næsheim.
Off the Backboard. by Samanthaa23 (3.8k words) - Isak and Even meet for the first time during a basketball game between Bakka and Nissen. They don't meet again until 5 years later at a charity basketball game.
Beer Pongs and Mistletoes by yllawonders (5.2k words) - Then somehow they ended up arm wrestling and this time Even won’t pretend to lose because Isak thinks he is a tough guy when he knows and he will prove it today that he is in fact, a big fat softie.
the universe was made just to be seen by my eyes by ikerestrella (5.9k words) - Set six months after the events of Season 3. They are on a hiking trip, and Isak definitely did not get them lost in the woods.
Slippery Slope by Laika_the_husband (11k words) - the guys wrestle in sun oil and the Balloon squad shows up.
scarves of red tied 'round their throats by puddingandpie (15k words) - The last time Isak saw Even, he was sweaty and naked underneath him, only to pack up and leave the next morning. Now, they're together at the Winter Olympics, a coincidence which was never going to be a coincidence considering Isak was well aware of the profession that Even was in as well. Figure skating, snowboarding, hockey, skiing...
Head Over Heels by LostInAdmiration (46k words) - Isak wished for the hundredth time that his stupid friends could just be normal so that he could go home and bundle himself in his duvet and re-watch Breaking Bad again, instead of spending all of his spare time outside in a pathetic excuse for a skate park.
Breaking Free (Outta the Closet) by valtersass (58k words) - (11/12 chapters posted) Isak, the popular captain of the basketball team, and Even, the brainy and beautiful member of the academic club, break all the rules of Hartvig Nissen society when they secretly audition for the leads in the school's musical. HSM au
Next to you, is where I call home by LostInAdmiration (101k words) - “Why don’t you start track too? You’d be a good sprinter, I’m sure you’d do great,” suggested Isak. Isak wasn’t entirely sure why he asked - he mostly liked being alone and he barely knew Even - but there was just something about Even that had drawn Isak to him.
The trip to you by charlyflowers (148k words) - Isak hates Even. He hates him with all his heart. What a pity the art class is also coming to the trip to Germany. Volleyball.
To Proudly Bleed These Colors From My Veins by Evensleftbigtoe_91 (164k words) - WIP. Last updated Aug 2019. Mixed martial artist Isak's dream is to feel the weight of a UFC Title Belt across his waist. But Isak has a long and difficult path in front of him. (I haven't had the chance to read this yet so I'm not sure if Evak is the main or endgame pair. But this fic sounds really cool.)

@writervega allow me to introduce the newest muse in honor of Mr. Oldman. Prepare to see a few posts about him and a certain green eyed girl. Imagine a get together with Harvey. * = snippets about my dear dad.
Tumblr media
Full Name: John Lee Pettimore ( III )
Parents: John Lee “Big John” and Sue Faye ( White ) Pettimore
DOB: February 24, 1942
Zodiac - Pisces
POB:  Mountain City, Tennessee ( that’s in Johnson County for ya’ll out of staters )
Occupation: Mechanic ( legally ) / Moonshiner & Crop Grower ( illegally )
Armed Services: Army ( served two tours in Vietnam }
Specialities: Trapping, ‘shine brewing and he’s noted for his green thumb.
Vehicle: ‘69 Charger bought brand new before he went Over There. Shot coated black by his cousin Dwight.
Facts:
- Volunteered on his birthday to go into the Army because given his last name he’d have ended up in either the county jail or getting drafted or perhaps six feet under in the family plot.*
- Knows the hollers and back roads better than anyone in Johnson County maybe even the state of Tennessee.
- He had the bright idea one night to extend on the family business. He gets care packages from a few buddies with connections in Columbia and Mexico. Chances are if you’ve enjoyed a bit of herbal libation it’s grown by him.
- Upon returning home from Vietnam he smuggled a rather large supply of the pre dried opium cured stuff in two sets of large stereo speakers undetected. Along with three very large coils of hemp rope. *
- Never gave much thought about marriage or kids until he met a nurse down the VA. She served right around the same time as he did. She also makes the best sky high brownies he’s ever had.
- Often wonders what his life would have been like had he not been born with the name he has. Or if he’d just been born middle class. His girl assures him that his name his plenty good enough and being middle class isn’t all that great.
- Hasn’t been caught for the still or the growing operation but does have a fair few speeding tickets on his driving record.
- Took his CDL and passed on the first go and now the wheels are turning about making his operation a bit larger.
- Has a mutt named Duke he ended up with as payment from one of his customers. He’s had him since he was a pup and he couldn’t have a more loyal companion.
- His other hobbies include, tracking, fishing, and gardening. Although canning is not his forte.
- He did drive a rig for a fair piece of time. ( two months )  Until a ten point buck decided to launch itself at the shiny new trailer and end up stuck in it horns first. Needless to say he was sacked, even thought it wasn’t technically his fault. There was an upside to that, he ended up with more venison than he could shake a stick at.*
- His bride was born in Kentucky, and after meeting her family he saw first hand that she had been raised with even less than he had growing up. But like him she was of resilient stock.
- Once dreamt of winning the lottery and getting out of Mountain City but now that he’s seen the world he’d just as soon stay where he’s at.

9 things finishing my 9th book taught me
Hey People of Earth!
Oh boy is that title real. Is this it. Have we reached the top of the mountain. I think yes?? The deed has been DONE, the book has been WROTE, I am in SHOCK.
I honestly didn’t think I’d be writing this post until June, seeming as though I figured REWIRED had another 3-4 chapters still kicking. I’ll go into detail about how the end of this book came to be in a separate writing update, but in short: it was an accident! (The book actually ends with the last chapter I updated on for this blog--BAD HABITS. If you missed that update, check it out HERE.)
I’ve been writing REWIRED since October of 2017 (lil munchkin was in grade 11!). That means I’ve been drafting this novel for a year and a half! Out of all my books, this one has definitely taught me the most.
I’ve done posts like this in the past for my other books, so in honour of the tradition, here is nine things finishing my ninth novel taught me!
1. What I like to write
Oh boy, this is such a big one. The start of REWIRED was really hard for me to write because I was transitioning between two styles: YA with dystopian vibes, to a more literary voice. At the start of drafting, I had no idea I would eventually start writing this novel as litfic, hence why the style on page one is so different from the style on the last page. I knew my literary voice and tastes were developing, I just didn’t know where this development would take me.
From October 2017-February 2018, the style was a more refined take on its initial YA dystopian predecessor. It was only when I read The Girls by Emma Cline in March of that year that I really realized where I wanted my style to be! I had struggled finding my voice in that four month period of the novel’s first draft, but reading that book really clicked everything in place for me. Whilst I’d incorporated more of a literary tone in the early chapters, I felt unsure about the voice. But when I read The Girls and drafted chapter 9 of the book shortly after (ironically, I later titled it Girl), everything really clicked in place for me! (so basically my writing advice is read the girls)
From playing around with my style in this book, I’ve really solidified what I love to write: adult litfic is where it’s at for me currently! yee haw.
2. Who my protagonist is
Reeve, the protagonist of REWIRED has been a character that has been with me since I was in grade eight (age 13). I’m going to uni in the fall and turning eighteen this year (wILD), so I’ve been in her head for five years. I talk about this in detail in the vlog I’ll have up of me finishing this book, but for so long, I tried to make Reeve someone she wasn’t. I had this idea of what the “right female protagonist” should be: someone kickass, unflinching, generous, but also a fighter. I had the very tropey ‘strong female character’ idea stuck in my head for so many years. Instead of writing Reeve as who she was, I wrote her as this strong female character--the person I thought she should be.
For a long time, I couldn’t understand why I’d always get feedback that Reeve was “so dramatic”, or “so selfish”, or “so annoying”. I tried really hard to fit her into this mould: I made her selfless, I made her kickass, the list goes on. But none of this worked. She was still “so dramatic” and “so selfish” and “so annoying” and even I got so fed up with her, I considered writing her in third person because I just couldn’t stand her anymore. After five whole books of being in her head, straight on, I couldn’t do it anymore.
But REWIRED changed the game for me. Even in the beginning of this book, I won’t lie, I made an effort to make Reeve self-aware and apologetic for her bad actions, but it never made her any more ‘likable’. I’d literally wrestled with her for five books and nothing I was doing to make her likable was working. So I gave up! I stopped trying to make her this kickass protagonist that was well-rounded and generous and logical and just accepted her for who she was. For five books, I’d tried to make her someone she wasn’t, and she literally didn’t care and kept up until I gave in and really accepted her and allllllll her (many) flaws.
And... that’s actually how I started to LOVE Reeve. Before this, I’d never really loved her (I’d always preferred my boys), but book six Reeve said FUCK THE BOYS I'm THE BEST. Which. Fair. Because she really is. Reeve is arrogant, and selfish, and irrational, and manipulative, but I love her SO much, and I’m so sad I didn’t appreciate her this much until this book because she’s the best?? On top of this, I’ve been absolutely blown away at the reception she’s gotten on this blog and within friends! I’m still sometimes shocked when people say they love Reeve because I spent so much time trying to fix her when she didn't need fixing. Now she goes around claiming she’s God and shit, and she’s never been more herself, oops.
3. That writing buddies are important
Like for real though, this book never would have been written without my buddies. Literal extreme thanks to @sarahkelsiwrites for putting up with my ass writing this book. I was the worst??
This book was really difficult for me to write/keep up with. I’d experienced an overload of school, and tonsss of anxiety that really witheld me from drafting as I’d expected. Thanks to Sarah, this book actually got written? Sarah is basically my ghost writer? Sarah is basically my ghost?? Period??
Also a huge shout out to my moms @sssoto and @shaelinwrites who’ve been cheering me on and like being so nice about the writing in this book since the start?? Like I’m sorry this is a cheesy Oscars speech, but I love you all?? Y’all are the reason this book done got wrote??
My writing buddies are the best please send them all the love in the world!
4. That writing doesn’t have to be fast
I love going back to my writing updates from 2016 where I was like “omg guys I only wrote 500k words this month omg ahaha!” and laughing because sis went from the goddamn HARE to the TURTOISE real quick with this book.
With the style + genre change, this was to be expected, but holy wow? I slowed down like 200%. But--I’m not mad at this at all. I think I learned how to actually take my time with writing because of this book. I wrote 70 words today? GREAT. I wrote 200 words this month? You know what--that is WONDERFUL, writing is not always about how quickly you’re putting out words! I used to get caught up in this mentality a lot when I was younger, so learning to accept that slow + steady wins the whole fckin race really helped.
5. That my writing doesn’t have to be morally correct
Lol I learned this so much, so so much. I had a huge habit of trying to correct the morally incorrect in my book, even when it was out of character. I did this a lot with Reeve (see above), where she’d say something, and then stiffly apologize for it even though she never would actually do that. This was my attempt at making everything morally correct, and ties into the whole ‘my characters must be likable thing’.
I call book six the book of making everyone bad people, and that’s what it BE. And I’d never want it any other way! I learned I love writing about bad people, and bad things, and bad people doing bad things. It’s my guilty pleasure, and I ain’t ever going to stop.
But I really stopped trying to resolve all the ‘morally incorrect’ content in my books like I used to (when out of character of course) and embrace evil?? like yesssss, welcome to the dark side.
6. I’m capable to push through struggle
Whilst I never felt this way during times of struggle, looking back, I definitely know I’m capable to fix my issues even when I feel they are unfixable. Even if I have to do this with a LOT of help (*cough* sarah *cough*), I know this is possible. I had a lot of lows writing this book, but I always made it out, no matter what. I’ve learned to trust myself a lot more, and give myself time to sort through the mud instead of giving up entirely.
7. Everything is changeable
Ya girl done changed everything in this book. From resurrecting characters to changing Reeve + Darren’s relationship from *wholesome friendship* to *wild failed engagement*, to giving Emily an entirely new personality, I really learned to embrace change in this book. I think a lot of us get caught up in the worries of change. This can cause lots of self doubt etc etc. The FOSTERED series is a personal project, but even knowing that, I was so hesitant to change things at the start of the novel. But as it progressed, I learned that hey--I make mistakes. Sometimes something doesn’t go the way I thought it would, sometimes I think of a better way to execute something. It’s not the end of the world to change things. I’ve embraced chaos, basically.
8. I don’t always have to stick to plans
This sort of plays into the last point, but I definitely want to talk about this! Whilst I’ve pantsed this entire series, I’ve also incorporated *some* level of planning. Whether that’s loose character arcs or plot threads etc, there’s always been a direction to follow. However, upon realizing even minimal planning sometimes was not working, I took a step back and just said it was totally okay for things to go “off course” (I like to think it’s being driven to a new course). I scrapped 50% of what the novel was supposed to be and let it occur as it was.
This is even relevant with how the book ended! The end came suddenly, and I’d had it written for a month without realizing it was the end! Plans are good, but not sticking to them is sometimes even better. This book turned into something completely different than intended, and I’m very happy about that! It allowed me to discover the story as I went, which is invaluable! I can’t stick to plans and you know: I dig it.
9. I’m a good writer
I impulsively want to put a question mark at the end of that, but you know, we are *confident* in this house *not really*.
This book made me really consider that maybe... just maybe... I’m a good writer. That doesn't mean I’m a perfect writer or never make mistakes--lol I make *many*, but I do think I really honed in on my craft through this book and wrote some good shit?? This book really solidified that I know I can write--not perfectly, but writing, nonetheless. I hadn’t really considered myself a good writer until this book, but ye, I def think I’m at least half decent!
So that’s about it for this update! THANK YOU for following this journey, folks, I can’t believe it’s over (like really I’m in shock someone help lmao), but unfortunately the party aint over til its over cuz I’m dragging you with me as I write the next book in this never ending series someone take the PEN out of my HAND. Your support has been so valuable to me! See y’all in the next book what mess will I get myself into next, oh god !!
