View from a window in Thousand Oaks, California in 1966
I’m a bit obsessed with the view from the window in Julius Schumann’s photo of Case Study House #28 by Buff & Hensman. Mind you I’m a bit obsessed about the house too.

I checked out a book called Constructing Worlds and have been looking through it as it focuses on famous architectural photographers. As I was flipping through the pages, one photographer that I'm familiar with and stuck out to me was Julius Shulman. Shulman was an American photographer who is primarily known for his post-war (1940s-50s) modernist photographs of an initiative by Arts & Architecture magazine known as the Case Study Houses. This initiative aimed to create inexpensive and replicable houses for post-war America. In one of my architecture studio classes last year I worked with Case Study House #20 by Buff, Straub, and Hensman, to create digital isometric drawings of the house. For that project, I relied on the site plan of the house, but also on Shulman's images to understand the structural form and to build my own drawings of it. The first two images above are Shulman's from Case Study House #20. One thing about Shulman's work that I am drawn to is how he balances showing the architecture and the functions of the houses. Looking back on Shulman's photos again now, I realize how successful he is at portraying the post-war dream that the initial initiative aimed for. The photos are made of bright, vibrant colors and carefully constructed compositions that portray to the viewer a sense of perfection. Another photographer that I was intrigued by within the book was Lucien Hervé. Hervé is mostly known for photographing Le Corbusier's work, but what I found most inspiring about the images in the book was how we played with lighting. The bottom photo above is a picture I took of the book to show what I'm talking about with the lighting. I think it's interesting how the lighting adds a lot of dimension to the otherwise simple-looking architectural spaces. I have always been interested in playing with lighting, so when I was looking through the book Hervé's work stood out to me. I still need to browse through the last section of Constructing Worlds, but I have found that it has been very helpful so far to see how other photographers have approached capturing architecture.
