In honor of BLACK HISTORY MONTH: My portrait of CATHAY WILLIAMS (1844-1893), the first black woman to enlist in the U.S. Army--but posed as a MAN under the pseudonym "William Cathay"--serving in the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment as a Buffalo soldier. BUFFALO SOLDIERS originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; the nickname was given to the black cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the American-Indian Wars. arlenschumer.com/historical #cathaywilliams #williamcathay #buffalosoldier #buffalosoldiers #arlenschumer #portrait #portraits #illustrationartists #illustrators @dgareps @richardsyrettstrangeplanet @nyadventureclub https://www.instagram.com/p/Co4-IZIL48W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

UNIT PROFILE – 10TH U.S. CAVALRY REGIMENT (BUFFALO SOLDIERS) A trailblazing all-Black cavalry unit and the original “Buffalo Soldier” regiment, the 10th Cav. earned renown for its conduct in the Indian Wars, the War with Spain, and 1916’s Punitive Expedition. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Congress reorganized and downsized the U.S. Army, authorizing it to form six all-Black regiments, two of which were cavalry units: the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiments (the four infantry regiments were quickly downsized to just two). Over three decades of fighting in the Indian Wars, the 10th and 9th Cav. participated in over 150 engagements, earning 17 Medals of Honor and the respect of their Native foes; the 10th Cav. was dubbed the “Buffalo Soldiers,” a nod to their courage and tenacity. The 10th Cav. furnished crack troops to the U.S. Army’s campaign in Cuba during the War with Spain in 1898, where they spearheaded the final assault up San Juan and Kettle Hills (the 10th Cav., the only unit to attack both peaks, took sizable casualties of around 20%). WWI hero John J. Pershing served as a young 1LT with the 10th Cav. and witnessed the Army’s capacity to foster racial harmony: “White regiments, black regiments … fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color … mindful only of their common duty as Americans.” During WWII the 10th Cav. did not see combat and was dissolved in 1944. After years of dormancy, the 10th Cav. was revived in 1958 as a racially integrated unit which continued the lineage of the famed Buffalo Soldiers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #BuffaloSoldier #IndianWars #SpanishAmericanWar #Cavalry #BlackHistoryMonth #ArmyHeritage Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Middle Tennessee Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co11qbKOrmh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Another full day in Manila beginning with a tour of the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, detailing and honoring the history and the role of the Philippines in World War II - a humbling and illuminating visit. Many, many American soldiers are buried here, and I realize that I know very little about this part of Philippines-US history and intend to learn more. In spite of the solemn setting, we had an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide (Carlos, aka Mr. Google) who kept things respectfully light and fun. Grateful for the experience 🇵🇭🇺🇸🎖️🪖✝️✡️🌳 . . @joatwood @zaneta.encarnacion @audie.decastro @livingcatrina @i.am.pam #philppines #manila #manilaamericancemetery #manilaamericancemeteryandmemorial #ww2 #philippineshistory #history #generalmcarthur #ishallreturn #travel #filipino #filipina #tattooer #ladytattooer #mestiza #filam #filipinoamerican #worldwar2 #leyte #buffalosoldiers (at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoC2FCFOSTD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cathay Williams Defied Her Time to Become the Only Known Female Buffalo Soldier Cathay Williams was an African-American soldier who enlisted in the United States Army under the pseudonym William Cathay. She was the first Black woman to enlist, and the only documented woman to serve in the United States Army posing as a man during the American Indian Wars.  She was a Black domestic worker and a soldier. Born in Independence, MO, she worked as a house slave for William Johnson, a wealthy planter in Jefferson City, until his death. About that time, the  Civil War broke out and she was freed by Union soldiers. Thereafter, Williams worked for the Army as a paid servant. While serving the soldiers, she experienced military life first hand, serving a Colonel Benton in Little Rock, AR. She also served General Phillip Sheridan and his staff. The Army recruited her to go Washington D.C., as a cook and laundress. While traveling with the Army, Williams witnessed the Shenandoah Valley raids in Virginia. After leaving Virginia, she traveled to Iowa and St. Louis; When the war ended, Williams, wanting to be independent.  She enlisted in the Army in November 1866, as William Cathay in the Thirty-Eighth United States Infantry, Company A, (Buffalo Soldiers).  She was able to do so because a medical examination was not required at the time. When she enlisted in the Army, women were not allowed to serve as soldiers. So Williams posed as a man. Of the approximately 3,800 Black infantrymen and cavalrymen who served in the frontier Army between 1866 and 1900, she was the only woman to serve as a Buffalo Soldier, as far as is known.  Only her cousin and a friend were aware of her real identity. Company A arrived at Fort Cummings, New Mexico, October 1, 1867, where her company protected miners and traveling immigrants from Apache attacks. In 1868, Williams grew tired of military life so she pretended to be ill. She was examined by a post surgeon who then discovered that she was a woman. She was discharged October 14, 1868, and lived many years after her military service. She died at 82 in Raton, NM #blackhistorymonth #cathaywilliams #buffalosoldier https://www.instagram.com/p/CLSc2ENgxkz/?igshid=367mjigcmn65
