Endangered Fireflies & Conservation
Fireflies are at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction, light pollution, and pesticide use. Recovery efforts started in 2023 for the 18 endangered species in North America. Almost 1 in 3 firefly species in the US and Canada are threatened with extinction.
Scientists have yet to prove the effectiveness of these steps due to limited research on firefly populations. However, there is evidence suggesting that human activities may contribute to the decline of fireflies. So, here's what you can do:
Turn off outside lights during nighttime hours
Allow logs and leaves to naturally decompose in your yard
Incorporate areas of water into your landscaping
Refrain from using pesticides in your yard
Avoid excessive mowing of your lawn
Plant native tree species in your yard.

The Layered Woodlouse Mounds
[Wildlife habitat sculpture]
Stoneware with glaze
June 2023
Amy Haigh
This new commission by Amy Haigh is a sculptural habitat (in stoneware with glaze), to be situated outdoors in a publicly accessible greenspace. The Layered Woodlouse Mounds (2023) act as a monument to its namesake species. Although the inhabitants are not seen by human observers for the most part, they live and search for food within the Mounds’ hidden sanctuaries, revealing themselves in fleeting moments as they leave and enter. … for more of my work see www.amyhaigh.com
The Mounds were shown at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2023.

this might be the year i revisit my mea stuff
maybe
idk could just be the coffee talking
i had started going all again shortly before cp77 just took over my ENTIRE EXISTENCE and i do still have such a fondness for one dr harry carlyle
i love my ryder, too, although i think i'd have to age her up even more to get back in that headspace. iirc, i made her 25 instead of 22, but as of this april i feel like i can officially say I'm very much pushing 40 and I'm good to leave the 20-something experiences far behind lmao
and i was taking some pretty cool shots using the basic features of ansel and having no idea what i was otherwise doing. it'd be fun to revisit ~*virtual photography*~ in another game. i don't think anything is gonna come close to vp in cp77 tbh but mea is a very pretty game with very pretty characters uwu

Got some happy design ideas for window bird garden! Since apparently parents actually care about the whole "looking like a garden" part more than ecology.
Hardest part will be still letting everything get a bit "leggy". Many gardens want either dense leaves or bare mulch, not so much room for the sort of places many insects like. Which is probably why designed like that.
Anyway, goal here is to encourage More bugs!
Some introduced plants don't cope with native bugs. But our local plants do okay, so long as predators are around. So my hope is that they will actually give the local plants an advantage.
They'll also help feed the birds! Plus bugs are cool, we should have more cool bugs.
Plus they turn over soil, fertilise flowers, control mosquito numbers, feed my favourite local mammals and reotiles, make cool nests. Just super neat friends for a garden.
My idea is to choose a few plant types missing from the area, especially endangered ones. (Some places get a license to sell rare plants. The idea is that trade in endangered plants is monitored, and that more people planting them improves population)
Some plants are more fire resistant, so will choose one of two so they can act as "fillers". Should create a pretty, more traditional garden, just one that can still function and interact with it's environment.
My biggest hope is for it to work as a "habitat/ population corridor" for some birds and if really lucky, some insects as well.
So, just need now to choose the most needed plants. And make "mock up" to help convince parents that this is definitely a normal "fashion garden" and probably not a tiny ecosystem that will encourage cool ants and beetles. They might be happy about the birds though.

⚠️TOXICGACHKID LOOK AWAY ⚠️
⚠️DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOURE TOXICGACHKID⚠️
The thing about hosting a fast liker/reblogger in your blog is that you get really worried that if you don't reblog enough or make enough silly posts they won't have enough enrichment :[ I know that is important for them to scavenge so they can look for new blogs and get varied materials to make their own nest but I get really worried :[[
