WIP Wednesday
She absolutely wouldn’t open her eyes. It was Sunday and she was entitled to stay in bed until noon if she wanted, that way she could avoid the morning retching completely unless she needed to pee —which she did. Anyway, whatever the hell was making that noise was certainly none of her concern. She dug her fingers into Jug’s side, groaned “Make it stop,” and pulled a pillow over her head. There was some incoherent grumbling, some clattering from the nightstand as he felt blindly for his glasses and an “Oomph,” sound as the bed dipped and then righted itself. She smiled, the pillow still smooched over her face. They really were an old married couple, her ankles were swollen like a couple of grapefruit, he couldn’t see worth a damn and said oomph when he stood, but they were getting old together so it was fine.
She must have drifted back to sleep but she was startled awake and upright when she heard him yell. His voice sounded wrong, too loud, scared. “What the fuck?” he yelled. “Betty?”
She was beside him faster than she would have believed possible given her current dispute with her centre of gravity. She reached him, standing pale and terrified by the apartment door, and promptly vomited over their visitor’s shoes. She could blame morning sickness but really it was shock. For a moment she’d wondered why a mirror had been placed outside her door but the Betty Cooper who would shortly be wiping puke from her sensible navy blue pumps was decidedly not eight months pregnant.

Gilmore Girls:
The revival really isn’t that bad, it’s just not what everyone wanted. It’s not even necessarily what I want but I enjoy it for what it is.
Rory really isn’t that bad, she’s just never been as good as anyone in the show thinks she is - because no one is that good. I don’t mind that her life fell apart and she had to try again, it’s the most relatable shit in the world. Characters having to rebuild their lives is very interesting to me, though.
Logan and Rory are like Luke and Lorelai: Rory is the hermit like Luke and Logan is the sunshine-y extrovert who gets her out of her shell like Lorelai does with Luke. Logan has always had more in common with Lorelai than he does with Christopher. (Also plays into my thoughts about how Rory and Lorelai are also two very fundamentally different characters and it's unfair to put Rory into the Lorelai mould.)
Logan isn’t the Tristan replacement, Jess was. He came in the show just as CMM was leaving and stepped into the role of Forrester’s antagonist/rival. Tristan and Logan are superficially alike but Jess and Tristan fulfilled the same role in Rory’s life, the unsafe option in comparison to Forrester. Tristan and Rory wouldn’t have been anything like Logan and Rory. I like Jess a lot more than I like Tristan so in a way i’m glad it worked out the way it did with CMM leaving. Also learning that Jess’ character was only created as a way to prevent Luke and Lorelai from getting together definitely colors my perception of his character arc.
Lorelai is right and Emily is right and that’s kind of the point. Lorelai did have a miserable lonely childhood with people who didn’t understand her. Emily did give everything she had to a daughter who rejected her. The point has always been that Lorelai did not belong in her parents’ world and they don’t understand that so they can only be hurt by her rejection.
Riverdale:
disclaimer: i saw like…ten episodes of this show.
1. The switch up on Alice Cooper’s character is terrible and I hate that people love her when she was clearly controlling and cruel to her daughters, they should not have made her a lovable character.
2. It would’ve been more interesting if Cheryl killed Jason. On purpose. I don’t want to elaborate too much because I have a fic in the works along these lines but this is the entire reason I started the show in the first place: I thought Cheryl was the one who murdered Jason and I was so into that.
3. Jughead should’ve been asexual/aromantic like his comic book counterpart. Not telling the cole sprouse fans not to thirst, y’all do y’all my babies tbh, just saying it would’ve been great center stage representation that the ace/aro community deserves and rarely gets. (Which is a large part of my disinterest in bughead.)
4. Betty and Cheryl have a more interesting dynamic than Veronica and Betty.
5. idek if this is unpopular or not but like this show basically ripped off every show ever so it’s really not that unique. it’s like Glee, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, and Twin Peaks had a baby and then no one ever told that baby "No" or gave it any structure so it grew up to be this mess who can’t commit to any storyline and just "yes and"-ed itself into the ground.

2023 FFRC - September🍂
Hello friends! I hope you've had a wonderful September. We've started my daughter's senior year with her choosing to join the high school football team instead of the soccer team (to the shock of everyone - including her soccer coach). Therefore, we've been spending every Friday night at the field - and she scored a touchdown in her first game - so that's exciting.
My 2023 @fanfic-reading-challenge is nearly complete. The challenge has various completion levels - and if you're looking for something to help motivate you to read new things or expand your range - or even if you just want to challenge yourself, you should join us. I read 58 new stories this month - and nearly 300 chapters. I'm closing in on 17 million words, so my year-long goal of 20 million words still isn't out of the realm of possibility. I also did a few podfic recordings... and was highly critical of all of them so I didn't post them. Maybe after I get more practise. lol.

Which is a fucked up thought, because prior to all this, all they had ever shared were barbs back and forth, or her calling him out on being a jerk to her sister.
Notes: Okay - so this series is three separate fics that feel like they're unconnected - but really they are completely connected. They're like different dimensions or universes where Harry and Allie were friends (and they don't stay just friends). These are the "other worlds".

Fic 1 - Howlin’ For You - A night of drunken UNO leads to explicit actions between two friends who have been secretly sleeping together.
Fic 2 - Lonely Boy - A surprise visit between two friends, a phone call, and a splash of angst. And sex.
Fic 3 - Gold on the Ceiling - When Jenna tells Percy it’s over she’s not sure what that means for either of them. And she doesn’t even begin to understand the gravity of her choice until she’s forced to put work on hold for the actor’s strike. Has she even been living? Or merely existing.. Light angst, heavy sex? But it’s introspective?
Notes: Okay - so RPF isn't for everyone. It is for me though. This series was written by the same Anon author (it's very clear that it's the same author) - I don't know who it is, but they deserve a huge cookie. I cried during the third one. And then had to fan myself. It's an odd conundrum. The writing is amazing. I would read a million more stories by this author - rpf or fandom or whatever. If I can only figure out who they are. 😉

Do you truly think Bughead stands a chance at getting endgame? I’ve tried to hold out hope these last two seasons. I thought once upon a time that eventually the payoff would be worth it, but the nonsense just goes on and on. I feel like BH’s get kicked in the teeth every episode and are punished for their years of devotion. And it’s not even like BA and JT are written well or have anywhere near the level of BH’s chemistry, but sometimes it feels like we’re stuck with them because RAS has disdain for his audience and is fixated on the “new” above honoring these characters and giving the show the ending it deserves. I’m sorry for being so negative. I just feel so stupid for continuing to invest anything in this show. I don’t want to discover a year from now that my time has been wasted and that the show is still trying to convince us that Betty and Jughead belong with other people and can’t even be assed to let them discuss anything not plot point related.
i've been avoiding these asks for a while because i don't want to come off like i'm telling anyone how to feel but since i keep getting asked i guess i'll try and give my honest opinion but hopefully without offending or upsetting anyone (jinxed by even saying it, i know).
bughead is not the first ship to get kicked in the teeth. they're not even the first ship to break up and have the writers ignore the fact that they dated for a good portion of time. they are not the first ship to date other people and totally act like they never dated until it's time to ramp up any drama. they are not the first ship to date, break up, date others, and then tell that new person that they love them.
and every ship i am thinking of for the above? they ended up together in the end. so yeah, i think it's possible. stories aren't told in a vacuum and shows that go on for 22 episodes or more need to drag out their narratives. these are not 8 episode netflix or hbo max shows that have limited time for their stories, they are filling a lot more air time. they have and will drag things out if they're trying to get to a certain point. yes, riverdale does this worse than others. 100%. 1000% even.
maybe it's a product of us all bingeing and watching shows with 8-10 eps a season but recently i was rewatching gilmore girls with my exchange student and i legit kept leaving the room because i felt like it was dragging on even tho i watched it when it was on week to week and was invested. there were a lot of episodes that just felt like they did nothing past fill some time. which is probably what they were doing when you need to make 22 of them in a season.
and listen, i'm not the biggest fan of anyone writing this show overall (how no one seems to know what anyone else is doing is just such a bad way to write?) but i don't think roberto actually has a disdain for the audience. ted? sure. we don't appreciate his genius and therefore suck. his arrogance is well known. evan? he wants attention. he got it. it was a dumb move. raise your hand if you're a bughead fic author who has written more interaction between betty and archie in your fics than this man (their king!) has written onscreen.
this show is badly run, written, and promoted. that's pretty obvious at this point. not a lot of people are watching, not a lot of people care anymore and i totally get why. i'm not going to tell you to continue being invested in something making you unhappy, your fictional escapes should bring you joy so taking a break when needed is always a good idea.
personally, if they're going to drag out this whole timelines mess, i don't think everything that happened will be ignored, it's just a continuation—and i'm not going to assume anything about the 50s thing, we don't even know how long it's going to last or what will happen within it. but we haven't even seen the finale yet and at the end of the day, i feel like they didn't have tabitha tell veronica it was 50/50 for the fun of it. but that's me and i think everyone should do what works for them when it comes to this show and fandom.

I can understand that they wanted to "explore" ba this season, and I can even understand that they wrote themselves into a corner and went "fuck it, 50s high school reset it is." (It's inexcusable for a bunch of people who are doing this professionally, but it's not like this hasn't happened before.)
What I CANNOT for the life of me comprehend is why they wrote ba as a series of red flags? Like, the most consistent thread in that relationship all season was them repeatedly bumping up against the fact that they explicitly didn't want the same things in life, and then ignoring those signs that the relationship isn't going to work, instead of making any attempt to resolve the differences. Then Archie proposes after the anvil that is his mother saying "yeah we got divorced bc we didn't want the same things"? And Betty (rightly) tells him he's not in the right head space, and then turns around and changes her mind 5 minutes later because...she didn't want a promotion?
WHAT?
Like they could have easily just written a ba relationship that...worked. instead they chose to lobotomize Betty and repeatedly emphasize the fact that they're incompatible. To what fucking end!?
ETA: i just want to clarify a little bit that i’m not questioning why they flattened out Betty’s character to make the ship happen. i’m questioning why they made explicit - as in, made the characters themselves state out loud! - the very fundamental cracks in the relationship only to continue forcing it to progress without ever addressing how the two of them might bridge those gaps.

What a day! It’s both exciting and scary because who knows where it will go from here….on to more books? In the gutter? Hopefully not lol
Being a writer, trying to succeed is tough, the journey is (for me anyway) anxiety and panic inducing but also so much fun.
I hope you all enjoy the re-worked version of Summer Storm. I would like to say I’m sorry that a few grammar and spelling mistakes managed to slip through despite several beta readers, 3 re-workings by me and two editors reading it several times! I think after a while our eyes just went wonky.
Despite that, it’s still awesome 😁
I would like to thank some people that supported me from the first day I tip-toed into this fandom in 2017… phew, it’s been a minute…
@allskynostars Jenna, you were the first person to reach out to me about my first fic and encouraged me to get an Ao3 account. Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks we need more of these fics! I am a huge fan of these types of movies - being a teen in the late 90's/early 2000s means I could relate to movies like 10 Things I Hate About You (FYI, I was basically Kat in hs, just a bit more goth) and Can't Hardly Wait. They are some of my favs, even to this day.
I have a rough idea of what I want to do but I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any!

Six Sentence Sunday

Jughead had planned a whole day just doing all her favourite things. How lucky is she to have fallen in love with her best friend who knows her about as well as she knows herself.
She was so nervous about this! It felt momentous, after all this time, to finally go on a proper date, the two of them. But Jughead knew exactly how to make it enjoyable and just lovely all around. Instead of being a nervous wreck all day, they’d had the best time. And this evening, at the dance, would just be icing on the cake.

2023 FFRC - August ⚔️🛡️
Hello friends! Autumn is my favourite time of year because the weather is lovely and there is no snow yet - unfortunately it doesn't last long here but I'm going to enjoy it while I can. I hope you're able to find things that make you happy!
I've had quite a few new followers, so I'll explain what this is. I participate in the @fanfic-reading-challenge every year and once a month, I share my reading progress and give a few fic recs that I particularly enjoyed this month. The challenge has various completion levels - and if you're looking for something to help motivate you to read new things or expand your range - or even if you just want to challenge yourself, you should come take a look. You don't have to wait until the new year to start - and there are a bunch of us on the Discord server (none of whom read any of the pairings/fandoms that I read btw😂) and it's a really nice and encouraging place to be.

I read lots of really great stories this month - lots of Fexi at the beginning of the month and then I slid into reading a bunch of GoT fic because we're rewatching the whole series with our daughter (she's a big Tyrion fan). I finally cracked 15 million words read and with a few months to go I'm hoping my year-long goal of 20 million won't be out of the realm of possibility - so go me!

Three Weeks, Ten States, and One Million Reasons to Fall for You by @leftennant (Darcy/Bucky - E 14/14)
Summary: When Darcy considers all the things she never planned to do, going on a ten state road trip with the Winter Soldier ranks right up there with jumping off the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier sans parachute. Falling for said Winter Soldier somewhere between New York and New Orleans? Never. Gonna. Happen. Probably, at least. I mean, he is pretty damn sexy when he's not glaring at her. Whatever. She's only in it for the taser batons.
Notes: Who doesn't love a Road Trip fic? It felt summery. And it's funny - Steve and Natasha also feature and they are adorable.

Summary: A meditation on love and the end of life as they sit in the park on the last day of Betty's life.
Notes: The perfect post-finale epilogue. I don't generally consider the last three seasons canon (Riverdale ended in 4x16 with a future of Yale and pizza and mysteries to me) - but if we have to deal with the mess that they gave us - at least there are fic writers who write amazing and glorious stories for all of us. Love this - and I love all of you, friends. 💛💙
